The selectivity of female phonotactic responses to synthetic advertisement calls was tested in choice situations. Preferences
based on differences in the linear rise-time of synthetic pulses depended on intensity and carrier frequency. When the carrier
frequency was 1.1 kHz, simulating the low-frequency peak in the advertisement call, females preferred alternatives with slower
rise-time pulses that differed by 5 ms at playback levels of 75 dB SPL and higher. A rise-time difference of 10 ms was discriminated
at 65 dB SPL. When the carrier frequency was 2.2 kHz, simulating the high-frequency peak in the call, females discriminated
a 5-ms difference in rise-time only at 85 dB SPL. Females showed no preference when the difference was 10 ms at lower playback
levels. The difference in the thresholds (about 15–20 dB) for discriminating differences in rise-time at the two carrier frequencies
was greater than the difference in behavioral thresholds for these two frequencies (about 10 dB). This result suggests that
rise-time discrimination can be mediated solely by the neural channel mainly tuned to the low-frequency peak in the call.
Females probably assess differences in rise-time by comparing the first few pulses of each call rather than by averaging over
the entire call.

False Vampires ( Megaderma lyra ) are gleaning bats which emit brief (1 ms) and faint echolocation signals consisting of four harmonics of a shallow frequency downward modulated fundamental (27–19 kHz). The complete signal spans a frequency range from 100 to 19 kHz. In sound recordings from three experimental animals we show that Megaderma lyra shifts the dominant frequency in the echolocation signals in relation to the type of prey offered and to flight style. During roaming flights the mean peak frequency was 63.2 ± 9 kHz (third harmonic). In prey catching flights, peak frequencies were shifted into the fourth harmonic. In flights towards a dish of crawling mealworms, mean peak frequency was raised to 91.2 ± 3.3 kHz. When the bats flew towards living mice the dominant frequency was further increased to 99.8 ± 5.2 kHz, and the second and third harmonic were at least 10 dB fainter or no longer recordable. The additional frequency shift when flying towards mice was not only a consequence of the dominance of the fourth harmonic but also of an additional rise of the fundamental harmonic by nearly 2 kHz. These prey-correlated frequency shifts in echolocation calls showed little variation between the three experimental animals and were reproducible over time. They occurred at or even before take-off of the bats. This is the first report of target-correlated transient adaptations in echolocation calls of any bat species. 相似文献

Summary Doppler shift compensation behaviour in horseshoe bats, Rhinolophus rouxi, was used to test the interference of pure tones and narrow band noise with compensation performance. The distortions in Doppler shift compensation to sinusoidally frequency shifted echoes (modulation frequency: 0.1 Hz, maximum frequency shift: 3 kHz) consisted of a reduced compensation amplitude and/or a shift of the emitted frequency to lower frequencies (Fig. 1).Pure tones at frequencies between 200 and 900 Hz above the bat's resting frequency (RF) disturbed the Doppler shift compensation, with a maximum of intererence between 400 and 550 Hz (Fig. 2). Minimum duration of pure tones for interference was 20 ms and durations above 40 ms were most effective (Fig. 3). Interfering pure tones arriving later than about 10 ms after the onset of the echolocation call showed markedly reduced interference (Fig. 4). Doppler shift compensation was affected by pure tones at the optimum interfering frequency with sound pressure levels down to –48 dB rel the intensity level of the emitted call (Figs. 5, 6).Narrow bandwidth noise (bandwidth from ± 100 Hz to ± 800 Hz) disturbed Doppler shift compensation at carrier frequencies between –250 Hz below and 800 Hz above RF with a maximum of interference between 250 and 500 Hz above resting frequency (Fig. 7). The duration and delay of the noise had similar influences on interference with Doppler shift compensation as did pure tones (Figs. 8, 9). Intensity dependence for noise interference was more variable than for pure tones (-32 dB to -45 dB rel emitted sound pressure level, Fig. 10).The temporal and spectral gating in Doppler shift compensation behaviour is discussed as an effective mechanism for clutter rejection by improving the processing of frequency and amplitude transients in the echoes of horseshoe bats.Abbreviations

Thresholds for evoked vocal responses and thresholds of multiunit midbrain auditory responses to pure tones and synthetic
calls were investigated in males of Pleurodema thaul, as behavioral thresholds well above auditory sensitivity have been reported for other anurans. Thresholds for evoked vocal
responses to synthetic advertisement calls played back at increasing intensity averaged 43 dB RMS SPL (range 31–52 dB RMS
SPL), measured at the subjects’ position. Number of pulses increased with stimulus intensities, reaching a plateau at about
18–39 dB above threshold and decreased at higher intensities. Latency to call followed inverse trends relative to number of
pulses. Neural audiograms yielded an average best threshold in the high frequency range of 46.6 dB RMS SPL (range 41–51 dB
RMS SPL) and a center frequency of 1.9 kHz (range 1.7–2.6 kHz). Auditory thresholds for a synthetic call having a carrier
frequency of 2.1 kHz averaged 44 dB RMS SPL (range 39–47 dB RMS SPL). The similarity between thresholds for advertisement
calling and auditory thresholds for the advertisement call indicates that male P. thaul use the full extent of their auditory sensitivity in acoustic interactions, likely an evolutionary adaptation allowing chorusing
activity in low-density aggregations. 相似文献

In the lesser spear-nosed bat, Phyllostomus discolor, maternal directive calls are characterized by an individual type of sinusoidal frequency modulation (= SFM) pattern. Beside
modulation frequency, modulation depth, carrier frequency, and number of modulation cycles per call contribute to the mother's
vocal signature. Since juvenile P. discolor learn to adapt their isolation calls to the corresponding call characteristics of the own mother or even to playback of a
computer-stored directive call, if hand-reared in the absence of conspecifics, the bats' auditory system ought to be able
to resolve interindividual differences in communication call structure. However, quantitative psychoacoustic data on the discrimination
of SFM signals in this species are not available. Thus, in the present study, lesser spear-nosed bats were trained in a two-alternative
forced-choice procedure to discriminate between two alternatingly presented SFM sound signals differing in modulation frequency.
Other characteristics of acoustic stimuli were identical and designed to mimick the fundamental of species-specific calls.
By gradually reducing the difference in modulation frequency between both stimuli within the behavioural relevant range until
the animals' performance dropped below the 75%-correct level, a considerable auditory spectro-temporal resolution has been
revealed. Particularly in comparison to the overall interindividual variation of this call parameter (minimal modulation frequency = 49 Hz,
maximum = 100 Hz), the determined average difference limen for modulation frequency of 2.42 ± 0.29 Hz seems substantial and
sufficient for labelling individuals.

The effect of unilateral and bilateral partial and total ablation of the auditory cortex on compensation of Doppler frequency shifts in echosignals was studied in greater horseshoe bats moving in space. The ability of the bats to compensate Doppler surges in the echolocation signal was found to be worsened even after partial ablation of the auditory cortex. Total bilateral ablation led to more marked and irreversible changes in the functioning of the Doppler echolocation system. In this case the degree of compensation in the decorticated animals was only 33% of normal; the return of the frequency of the constant part of the signal to the resting level after movement of the animal ceased was delayed. After total ablation of the auditory cortical projection area definite retrograde degeneration of cells of the medial geniculate body was observed. It is concluded from the results that the auditory cortex in bats plays a direct part in echolocation spatial analysis.A. A. Ukhtomskii Physiological Research Institute, A. A. The sonar systems of bats and dolphins are in many ways superior to man-made sonar and radar systems, and considerable effort has been devoted to understanding the signal-processing strategies underlying these capabilities. A major feature determining the efficiency of sonar systems is the sensitivity to noise and jamming signals. Previous studies indicated that echolocating bats may adjust their signal structure to avoid jamming ('jamming avoidance response'; JAR). However, these studies relied on behavioural correlations and not controlled experiments. Here, we provide the first experimental evidence for JAR in bats. We presented bats (Tadarida brasiliensis) with 'playback stimuli' consisting of recorded echolocation calls at one of six frequencies. The bats exhibited a JAR by shifting their call frequency away from the presented playback frequency. When the approaching bats were challenged by an abrupt change in the playback stimulus, they responded by shifting their call frequencies upwards, away from the playback. Interestingly, even bats initially calling below the playback's frequency shifted their frequencies upwards, 'jumping' over the playback frequency. These spectral shifts in the bats' calls occurred often within less than 200 ms, in the first echolocation call emitted after the stimulus switch-suggesting that rapid jamming avoidance is important for the bat. 相似文献

The greater sac-winged bat, Saccopteryx bilineata (Emballonuridae), uses two distinct echolocation call sequences: a ‘monotonous’ sequence, where bats emit ~48 kHz calls at
a relatively stable rate, and a frequency-alternating sequence, where bats emit calls at ~45 kHz (low-note call) and ~48 kHz
(high-note call). The frequencies of these low–high-note pairs remain stable within sequences. In Panama, we recorded echolocation
calls from S. bilineata with a multi-microphone array at two sites: one a known roosting site, the other a known foraging site. Our results indicate
that this species (1) only produces monotonous sequences in non-foraging contexts and, at times, directly after emitting a
feeding buzz and (2) produces frequency-alternating sequences when actively foraging. These latter sequences are also characterized
by an unusual, offbeat emission rhythm. We found significant positive relationships between (1) call intensity and call duration
and (2) call intensity and distance from clutter. However, these relationships were weaker than those reported for bats from
other families. We speculate on how call frequency alternation and an offbeat emission rhythm might reflect a novel strategy
for prey detection at the edge of complex habitat in this ancient family of bats. 相似文献

Several anabantoid species produce broad-band sounds with high-pitched dominant frequencies (0.8–2.5 kHz), which contrast
with generally low-frequency hearing abilities in (perciform) fishes. Utilizing a recently developed auditory brainstem response
recording-technique, auditory sensitivities of the gouramis Trichopsis vittata, T. pumila, Colisa lalia, Macropodus opercularis and Trichogaster trichopterus were investigated and compared with the sound characteristics of the respective species. All five species exhibited enhanced
sound-detecting abilities and perceived tone bursts up to 5 kHz, which qualifies this group as hearing specialists. All fishes
possessed a high-frequency sensitivity maximum between 800 Hz and 1500 Hz. Lowest hearing thresholds were found in T. trichopterus (76 dB re 1 μPa at 800 Hz). Dominant frequencies of sounds correspond with the best hearing bandwidth in T. vittata (1–2 kHz) and C. lalia (0.8–1 kHz). In the smallest species, T. pumila, dominant frequencies of acoustic signals (1.5–2.5 kHz) do not match lowest thresholds, which were below 1.5 kHz. However,
of all species studied, T. pumila had best hearing sensitivity at frequencies above 2 kHz. The association between high-pitched sounds and hearing may be caused
by the suprabranchial air-breathing chamber, which, lying close to the hearing and sonic organs, enhances both sound perception
and emission at its resonant frequency.

Previous experiments demonstrated that in choice situations female Tettigonia cantans prefer signals with the conspecific spectrum over signals with the spectrum of the sibling species T. viridissima, whose signals lack the T. cantans-typical 8-kHz component but are otherwise identical in spectral composition. The underlying neuronal mechanisms were investigated
using whole-nerve recordings of the tympanal nerve. Hearing thresholds did not differ significantly between the species in
the range between 7 and 25 kHz. The responses of the tympanic nerve at 30 dB above threshold did, however, differ significantly
between the species. While in T. viridissima response amplitudes did not differ between 7 and 12 kHz, in T. cantans responses at 8 kHz were significantly larger than at 10 and 12 kHz. Since possible influences of axonal diameters on response
magnitudes were excluded, these results indicate that in T. cantans more receptor cells are tuned to 8 kHz than to 10–12 kHz, while in T. viridissima tuning of receptor cells is more evenly distributed. The higher response magnitude in T. cantans at 8 kHz than at 10–12 kHz is equivalent to an amplitude difference of 3.8–7 dB, which agrees well with previous behavioural
estimates.

Previous studies of acoustic startle in insects have dealt with behavioral and/or neural mechanisms employed in evading aerially
hawking, echolocating bats; however, insects also face terrestrial predators. Here we describe an acoustic startle response
of the nocturnal katydid, Neoconocephalus ensiger. Stridulating males disturbed in the field perform obvious anti-predatory behaviors – cessation of singing, freezing, jumping,
and evasive flight. Under controlled laboratory conditions we found that cessation of singing and song pausing are ultrasound-specific
behaviors: when stimulated with pulsed ultrasound (20–100 kHz), but not audio-sound (<20 kHz), males cease mate calling or
insert pauses in their song. A second factor influencing acoustic startle is the phase of stimulation: an acoustic startle
response occurs only when the pulse of ultrasound arrives during the window of silence between stridulatory syllables. The
average startle threshold and response latency was 70 ± 5 dB SPL and 34.2 ± 6.0 ms, respectively. N. ensiger is particularly useful for examining acoustic startle responses of non-flying insects because (1) its calling song is broadband
and contains ultrasound, thus the possibility exists of confusion over the biological meaning of ultrasound, and (2) this
species shows the classic bat-avoidance response while flying, so a direct comparison between two types of acoustic startle
is possible within the same species.

Frequency tuning, temporal response pattern and latency properties of inferior colliculus neurons were investigated in the
big fruit-eating bat, Artibeus jamaicensis. Neurons having best frequencies between 48–72 kHz and between 24–32 kHz are overrepresented. The inferior colliculus neurons
had either phasic (consisting in only one response cycle at all stimulus intensities) or long-lasting oscillatory responses
(consisting of multiple response cycles). Seventeen percent of neurons displayed paradoxical latency shift, i.e. their response
latency increased with increasing sound level. Three types of paradoxical latency shift were found: (1) stable, that does
not depend on sound duration, (2) duration-dependent, that grows with increasing sound duration, and (3) progressive, whose
magnitude increases with increasing sound level. The temporal properties of paradoxical latency shift neurons compare well
with those of neurons having long-lasting oscillatory responses, i.e. median inter-spike intervals and paradoxical latency
shift below 6 ms are overrepresented. In addition, oscillatory and paradoxical latency shift neurons behave similarly when
tested with tones of different durations. Temporal properties of oscillation and PLS found in the IC of fruit-eating bats
are similar to those found in the IC of insectivorous bats using downward frequency-modulated echolocation calls. 相似文献

1. Laser vibrometry and acoustic measurements were used to study the biophysics of directional hearing in males and females
of a cicada, in which most of the male tympanum is covered by thick, water filled tissue “pads”. 2. In females, the tympanal
vibrations are very dependent on the direction of sound incidence in the entire frequency range 1–20 kHz, and especially at
the main frequencies of the calling song (3–7 kHz). At frequencies up to 10 kHz, the directionality disappears if the contralateral
tympanum, metathoracic spiracle, and folded membrane are blocked with Vaseline. This suggests some pressure-difference receiver
properties in the ear. 3. In males, the tympanal vibrations depend on the direction of sound incidence only within narrow
frequency bands (around 1.8 kHz and at 6–7 kHz). At frequencies above 10–12 kHz, the directionality appears to be determined
by diffraction, and the ear seems to work as a pressure receiver. The peak in directionality at 6–7 kHz disappears when the
contralateral timbal, but not the tympanum, is covered. Covering the thin ventral abdominal wall causes the peak around 1.8 kHz
to disappear. 4. Most observed tympanal directionalities, except around 1.8 kHz in males, are well predicted from measured
transmissions of sound through the body and measured values of sound amplitude and phase at the ears at various directions
of sound incidence.

The characteristics of absolute auditory sensitivity of the bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) in the transverse plane have been measured using short broadband stimuli simulating dolphin clicks (with energy maximum
at frequencies 8, 16, 30, 50 and 100 kHz). Experiments were performed using the method of conditioned reflexes with food reinforcement.
It is shown that, in the frequency range of 8–30 kHz, the absolute sensitivity of dolphin hearing in any ventral and lateral
directions of the transverse plane is only 2–8 dB worse than in the rostral direction. Moreover, it is 25–30 dB better than
at 50–100 kHz. At 8–30 kHz, pronounced dorsoventral asymmetry has been observed. In this frequency range, it reaches 15–18
dB whereas at 50–100 kHz this asymmetry decreases to 2–3 dB. In the dorsal direction, the auditory sensitivity is 18 dB worse
than in the rostral one at ∼8 kHz, and the difference rises smoothly to 33 dB at ∼100 kHz. At 50–100 kHz, the acoustical thresholds
in the transverse plane relative to those for the with rostral direction get worse almost uniformly in all directions by 25–33
dB. As a result, in the transverse plane the beam patterns are nearly circular, unlike those at 8–30 kHz. The results are
discussed in terms of the model of sound perception through the left and right mental foramens. The biological relevance of
such asymmetry is emphasized. 相似文献

Noise improves transfer of near-threshold, phase-locked activity of the cochlear nerve: evidence for stochastic resonance? 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2

Stochastic resonance can be described as improved detection of weak periodic stimuli by a dynamic nonlinear system, resulting
from the simultaneous presentation of a restricted dynamic range of low-intensity noise. This property has been reported in
simple physical and biological activities. The present study describes data consistent with the interpretation that stochastic
resonance can be observed in the response of cochlear neurons. These experiments utilized low levels (−5 to 25 dB SPL) of
stimuli and noise (5 to 30 dB SPL). Stimuli consisted of simultaneously presented 8 kHz (F
1) and 8.8 kHz (F
2) tone bursts, which generated an 800 Hz F
2–F
1 cochlear nerve envelope ensemble response in the gerbil. The mean response threshold was approximately −3 dB SPL. Simultaneous
presentation of a low-intensity wideband noise increased the amplitude of this response. This was observed with tonal stimuli
having intensities of 0–5 dB SPL; responses to stimulus levels >10 dB were attenuated by noise. Response amplitude was increased
by noise levels of 10–15 dB; the amplitude was unaffected by lower levels of noise, and decreased in the presence of higher
noise levels. These properties are compatible with those of stochastic resonance.

Absolute hearing thresholds and critical masking ratios in the European barn owl: a comparison with other owls 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

Absolute thresholds and critical masking ratios were determined behaviorally for the European barn owl (Tyto alba guttata). It shows an excellent sensitivity throughout its hearing range with a minimum threshold of −14.2 dB sound pressure level
at 6.3 kHz, which is similar to the sensitivity found in the American barn owl (Tyto alba pratincola) and some other owls. Both the European and the American barn owl have a high upper-frequency limit of hearing exceeding
that in other bird species. Critical masking ratios, that can provide an estimate for the frequency selectivity in the barn
owl's hearing system, were determined with a noise of about 0 dB spectrum level. They increased from 19.1 dB at 2 kHz to 29.2 dB
at 8 kHz at a rate of 5.1 dB per octave. The corresponding critical ratio bandwidths were 81, 218, 562 and 831 Hz for test-tone
frequencies of 2, 4, 6.3 and 8 kHz, respectively. These values indicate, contrary to expectations based on the spatial representation
of frequencies on the basilar papilla, increasing bandwidths of auditory filters in the region of the barn owl's auditory
fovea. This increase, however, correlates with the increase in the bandwidths of tuning curves in the barn owl's auditory
fovea.

To understand complex sensory-motor behavior related to object perception by echolocating bats, precise measurements are needed for echoes that bats actually listen to during flight. Recordings of echolocation broadcasts were made from flying bats with a miniature light-weight microphone and radio transmitter (Telemike) set at the position of the bat's ears and carried during flights to a landing point on a wall. Telemike recordings confirm that flying horseshoe bats (Rhinolophus ferrumequinum nippon) adjust the frequency of their sonar broadcasts to compensate for echo Doppler shifts. Returning constant frequency echoes were maintained at the bat's reference frequency +/-83 Hz during flight, indicating that the bats compensated for frequency changes with an accuracy equivalent to that at rest. The flying bats simultaneously compensate for increases in echo amplitude as target range becomes shorter. Flying bats thus receive echoes with both stabilized frequencies and stabilized amplitudes. Although it is widely understood that Doppler-shift frequency compensation facilitates detection of fluttering insects, approaches to a landing do not involve fluttering objects. Combined frequency and amplitude compensation may instead be for optimization of successive frequency modulated echoes for target range estimation to control approach and landing. 相似文献
