A number of rare or unknown desmid species were revealed in samples collected from a range of aquatic habitats in Japan. In the present paper we describe one new species of the family Desmidiaceae, Staurastrum tsukubicum sp. nov. and report the presence in Japan of two species, Staurastrum levanderi Grönbl. and Cos-marium dilatatum Lütkem. in Järnefelt et Grönblad, previously found only in Europe. One taxon, Euastrum englerii Schmidle var. madagascariense Bourr. et Manguin, is renamed as Euastrum biverrucosum nom. nov. et stat. nov. The morphology of these taxa was studied using light and scanning electron microscopy and their taxonomic affinities are discussed.  相似文献

The pollen morphology of 13 taxa(34 specimens)of the genera Glechoma L.,and Marmoritis Benth.was investigated in detail using light,scanning electron,and transmission electron microscopy.Pollen grains of all studied taxa are small to large in size(P = 32.5-60.4μm,E = 20.2-50.5μm),prolate-spheroidal to prolate in shape and mostly hexacolpate(the amb more or less circular or rarely ellipsoid)with granular membranes.The sexine ornamentation of Glechoma is bireticulate; the muri of the primary reticulum are irregularly circled,and lumen size is short.In contrast,the sexine surfaces of the Marmoritis pollen tend to more elongate or wider at the muri of the primary reticulum than those of the Glechoma.The pollen wall stratification of selected taxa(three from Glechoma and one from Marmoritis)is characterized by unbranched columellae,and continuous or distinctly discontinuous endexine based on transmission electron microscopy observation.The results of Glechoma and Marmoritis reveal rather similar pollen morphological features,however,fine details of sexine ornamentation are characteristic to differentiate the pollen taxa.Although these differences may be useful in establishing the taxonomic boundary between two genera,they are too weak to segregate diagnostic characters.  相似文献

Stunt nematodes are characterized by phenotypic plasticity, with overlapping morphology and morphometry leading to potential misidentification. Consequently, the application of integrative taxonomic approaches is useful to species delimitation based on a combination of different perspectives, e.g. morphology and DNA sequences. We conducted nematode surveys in cultivated and natural environments in Spain and the USA, from which we identified 18 known species of the family Telotylenchidae and two new taxa within the studied samples. These species were morphologically, morphometrically, and molecularly characterized. The results of light and scanning electron microscopic observations, and molecular and phylogenetic analysis also allowed two new species to be distinguished, described herein as B itylenchus hispaniensis sp. nov. and T ylenchorhynchus mediterraneus sp. nov. The phylogenetic analysis was carried out using molecular data from nuclear ribosomal DNA genes [D2–D3 expansion segments of the large ribosomal subunit (28S), internal transcribed spacer (ITS), and partial small ribosomal subunit (18S)]. We also provide here a test of alternative hypotheses that confirms the monophyly of both Tylenchorhynchus and Bitylenchus sensu Siddiqi's classification but does not support Fortuner & Luc's conceptual view of Tylenchorhynchus as a large genus. Ancestral state reconstructions of several diagnostic morphological characters using a maximum parsimony approach showed congruence in morphological and molecular evolution for stylet knob inclination and tail tip annulation. Our analysis emphasizes some of the problems related to the taxonomy and phylogeny of nematodes of Telotylenchinae. © 2014 The Linnean Society of London  相似文献

Seed morphology of 15 taxa of Linaria from eastern Spain has been studied using stereoscopic and scanning electron microscopy. Four different morphological types are described according to features of the seed-coat surface. The type that includes winged seeded taxa is divided into three subtypes. Seed morphology of each type and subtype is described, compared, illustrated and discussed according to its taxonomic and biological implications. The Sunda region of Southeastern Asia is rich in termite fauna, but termites from this region have been poorly described. In this study, we described eight species from two diverse genera from this region, and from the family Termitidae. We describe Bulbitermes 4 spp. and Nasutitermes 4 spp. from new field collections. Where possible we examine original holotype specimens, and describe the essential morphological characters for soldier and worker castes. We devise two new bifurcating keys to guide the field identification of each species. In addition, we develop a nucleotide sequence profile for the COI gene. From this molecular character matrix, we use Neighbour-Joining analysis to test the monophyly of each morphospecies and genus. We find that the morphological and molecular characters are highly concordant, whereby all taxa appear to represent distinct molecular clades. For termites, there is therefore agreement between the morphological taxonomic characters used to sort species from a bifurcating key and the molecular taxonomic characters used to sort species on a bifurcating tree. This joint analysis suggests that DNA barcoding holds considerable promise for termite taxonomy, especially for diverse clades like Bulbitermes and Nasutitermes for which a global morphological key would be intractable.  相似文献

Pollen morphology of 14 Allium L. species grown in Turkey, that belong to the sections Codonoprasum and Allium, were investigated under LM (light microscopy) and by SEM (scanning electron microscopy). However, the pollens of 5 species were investigated under TEM (transmission electron microscopy). Detailed pollen morphological characteristics are given for Allium in the family on the basis of the results presented here together with data from the literature. The genera Allium homogeneous in both aperture type and exine ornamentation. It is suggested that some palynological characters, such as aperture type and the presence of an operculum, could be of taxonomic value at the section level.  相似文献

Phylogeny and morphological evolution of the amblystegiaceae (Bryopsida)   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
To circumscribe the moss family Amblystegiaceae, we performed a broad-scale analysis of trnL-trnF spacer sequence data for 168 species of the Hypnales and 11 species of the Hookeriales and additional analyses of trnL-trnF and atpB-rbcL (chloroplast DNA), one nuclear region, the internal transcribed spacers of 18S-26S rDNA, and 68 morphological characters for a reduced data set of 54 species of Hypnales. The traditionally circumscribed Amblystegiaceae are polyphyletic and include the Amblystegiaceae s. str. and the Calliergonaceae fam. nov., plus several taxa closely related to other Hypnalean families. Generic relationships within the redefined Amblystegiaceae were investigated by analyzing data from the three DNA regions and morphology as used in the broader analysis. Reconstruction of morphological evolution was evaluated using maximum-parsimony and maximum-likelihood. Numerous independent character-state transitions implied by the phylogeny suggest that morphological characters that have traditionally been used to delineate the Amblystegiaceae are homoplastic. Sporophytic traits, which are generally given primacy over gametophytic traits in moss classification, are more labile than previously thought, and many characters that are related to sporophyte specializations are strongly correlated with habitat conditions. The evolution of several gametophyte features previously thought to be reliable for delineating the family are also strongly correlated with habitat. These observations help to explain the instability of the Amblystegiaceae in previous taxonomic and phylogenetic analyses based on morphology.  相似文献

Two distinct morphotypes ofChydorus sphaericus are recognised in Ireland. A reference collection of scanning electron micrographs of male and femaleC. sphaericus sens. str. has been compiled. This collection is used to compare the varying morphological features of Danish and Irish material to determine their taxonomic significance. However, no taxonomic decisions can be made about the Irish morphotypes until mature males and ephippial females become available. Comparison of population structures and stages of reproduction are accomplished by size-frequency distribution. This study illustrates the ever increasing value of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in chydorid taxonomy, where characters such as shell-reticulation features may easily be misinterpreted using only light microscopy.  相似文献

Abstract: Using optical and scanning electron microscopy, we carried out a palynological study of some plant species with a systematic position that has been controversial. One of the taxa belongs to the genus Artemisia (Asteraceae, Anthemideae), but has been described in another genus (Artemisia incana/Tanacetum incanum). The remaining taxa have been named or combined in Artemisia but are now considered members of small genera mostly segregated from Artemisia (Ajania, Hippolytia, Kaschgaria, Lepidolopsis, Mausolea, Turaniphytum), or belong to very close genera (Brachanthemum, Sphaeromeria). We confirm the existence of two pollen morphological patterns - concerning ornamentation - in the tribe Anthemideae: one with long spines ( Anthemis type) and the other with short spinules ( Artemisia type). Artemisia and its related genera can also be divided into two groups according to this feature, which is a good taxonomic marker, well correlated with other morphological and molecular characters.  相似文献

Polygala L. is a large and highly diverse genus with complex taxonomy, but pollen morphological information for this taxon is scarce. In the present study, pollen characters have been used to assess the taxonomic delimitation and phylogenetic relationships of three newly established subgenera of Polygala: Chamaebuxus, Chodatia and Rhinotropis (sensu Paiva). The pollen morphology of 22 species has been examined using light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy of acetolysed material. The pollen of 15 of the species is examined for the first time. The pollen grains are isopolar, radially symmetrical, tectate and, typically, polyzonocolporate with numerous colpi running parallel to the polar axis, and an endocingulum around the equator. Two pollen types can be distinguished: Type I, which includes species belonging to Rhinotropis, and Type II, which includes species from Chamaebuxus and Chodatia. The two pollen types are described and the pollen of the three studied subgenera is illustrated. Despite the low infrageneric morphological diversity observed within the genus Polygala, quantitative characters of pollen grains support the current classification of the subgenera Chamaebuxus, Chodatia and Rhinotropis, and reveal a closer relationship between the first two taxa. Pollen characters are shown to be a useful and informative tool for assessing taxonomic position and phylogenetic relationships within Polygalaceae, especially at higher taxonomic levels.  相似文献

Recent studies have shown that addition or deletion of taxa from a data matrix can change the estimate of phylogeny. I used 29 data sets from the literature to examine the effect of taxon sampling on phylogeny estimation within data sets. I then used multiple regression to assess the effect of number of taxa, number of characters, homoplasy, strength of support, and tree symmetry on the sensitivity of data sets to taxonomic sampling. Sensitivity to sampling was measured by mapping characters from a matrix of culled taxa onto optimal trees for that reduced matrix and onto the pruned optimal tree for the entire matrix, then comparing the length of the reduced tree to the length of the pruned complete tree. Within-data-set patterns can be described by a second-order equation relating fraction of taxa sampled to sensitivity to sampling. Multiple regression analyses found number of taxa to be a significant predictor of sensitivity to sampling; retention index, number of informative characters, total support index, and tree symmetry were nonsignificant predictors. I derived a predictive regression equation relating fraction of taxa sampled and number of taxa potentially sampled to sensitivity to taxonomic sampling and calculated values for this equation within the bounds of the variables examined. The length difference between the complete tree and a subsampled tree was generally small (average difference of 0-2.9 steps), indicating that subsampling taxa is probably not an important problem for most phylogenetic analyses using up to 20 taxa.  相似文献

The phylogeny of Rotifera was examined in different computer‐generated cladistic analyses, including Seisonidea, Bdelloidea, Flosculariacea, Collothecacea and all ploimids treated on family level. The analyses were based on a character matrix solely dealing with morphological characters, primarily based on the trophi morphology. Limnognathia maerski (Micrognathozoa), Rastrognathia macrostoma and Gnathostomula paradoxa (Gnathostomulida) were used as outgroups. The cladistic analysis performed by paup produced 288 most parsimonious trees. peewee analyses produced between 140 and 432 trees, depending on the concavity value. The monophyly of Eurotatoria, Monogononta and Ploima was confirmed in all obtained trees. All analyses suggested a division of Ploima into major clades. One clade corresponded to Transversiramida while the other contained all other ploimid taxa and recognized Antrorsiramida as a monophylum. Based on the obtained results a scenario for the trophi evolution is proposed. The analyses suggested that the presence of an incus is synapomorphic for Gnathifera while mallei are synapomorphic for Micrognathozoa and Rotifera. The ancestral rotifer trophi probably resembled those in Harringia (Asplanchnidae).  相似文献
