The legume, Pueraria montana var. lobata (kudzu vine) is one of the worst plant invaders globally. Here we present the first study of P. montana in South Africa. We found only seven P. montana populations covering an estimated condensed area of 74 hectares during the height of the growing season. Based on a species distribution model, it appears that large parts of the globe are suitable, including parts of the eastern escarpment of South Africa (where most populations occur). South African populations of P. montana appear to have a similar ecology to populations in the USA: high growth rates, low seed germination, no natural long-distance dispersal, little herbivory and vigorous post-fire resprouting. In contrast to the USA, most South African populations do flower and flowers are capable of producing seed in the absence of pollinators. However, P. montana appears to have never been widely planted in South Africa, and the incursion was for many years restricted to a single introduction site. The comparison between the invasions of P. montana in the USA and South Africa highlights the often overriding importance of human-assisted dispersal and cultivation in creating widespread invasions, and should serve as a warning to people who have proposed to utilize the species in Africa.  相似文献

A comparative analysis of the sibling species of Drosophila virilis was performed by RAPD-PCR technique using a set of random primers. The degree of relatedness was studied by cluster analysis (UPGMA) and multidimensional scaling. The resulting pattern of species relationships contradicts the classical taxonomy. The main result of the cluster analysis is that D. virilis does not cluster with the remaining three species of its phylad, while according to multidimensional scaling, D. virilis is equidistant from all the species of its group, from both the species of its phylad and the species of the montana phylad. The montana phylad is extremely heterogeneous; moreover, the species D. littoralis, D. ezoana, and D. kanekoi appear to be closer to the virilis phylad than to the other species of the montana phylad, wherein these species are traditionally included. The phylogenetic relationships between the studied species discovered using RAPD fingerprinting comply with the results obtained using protein markers and quantitative traits.  相似文献

Flood tolerance is commonly regarded as the main factor explaining low diversity and monodominance in tropical swamps. In this study we examined seedling mortality in relation to seasonality, i.e., flooding versus drought, of the dominant tree species (Prioria copaifera), and three associated species (Pterocarpus officinalis, Carapa guianensis and Pentaclethra macroloba), in seasonally flooded forests (SFF) in Darien, Panama. Seedling mortality differed among species, years and seasons. Prioria seedlings experienced the lowest overall mortality, and after 3 years many more Prioria seedlings remained alive than those of any of the associated species. In general, within species, larger seedlings had greater survival. Seed size, which can vary by close to 2 orders of magnitude in Prioria, had a confounding effect with that of topography. Large-seeded Prioria seedlings experienced 1.5 times greater mortality than small-seeded seedlings, as large-seeded Prioria seedlings were more likely to be located in depressions. This finding suggests that seed size, plant size and topography are important in understanding SFF regeneration. For all species, seedling mortality was consistently greater during the dry season than during flooding. For Prioria, dry season seedling mortality was correlated with drought stress, that is, high mortality during the long El Niño dry season of 1998 and the normal dry season of 2000, but very low dry season mortality during the mild dry season of 1999. Prioria’s ability to dominate in seasonally flooded forest of Central America is partly explained by its low drought-related mortality in comparison to associated species.  相似文献

Four plant species, Elymus mollis Trin., Carex kobomugi Ohwi, Glehnia littoralis F. Schmidt ex Miq., and Vitex rotundifolia L.f., are dominant perennial species in coastal sand dunes of Korea. We examined a physiological adaptation of these species by measurements of diurnal variation in photosynthesis and chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence and solute patterns in leaves during one season (June), which is favorable for plant growth of all four species. All four species adopted different strategies in order to utilize radiation and to maintain water status under a fluctuating microclimate. Although the lowest water contents among four plant species was found, E. mollis with a high Chl and K+ content showed better photosynthetic performance, with high stomatal conductance (g s), net photosynthetic rate (P N), instantaneous carboxylation efficiency (CE), and water-use efficiency. Midday depression of P N in E. mollis and G. littoralis, without a reduction of gs, was associated with a reduction in CE and maximum photochemical efficiency of PSII, indicating nonstomatal limitation. Photosynthesis depression in both C. kobomugi and V. rotundifolia, with relatively low g s values, could be attributed to both stomatal and nonstomatal limitations. The high storage capacity for inorganic ions in E. molli, C. kobomugi, and G. littoralis may play an efficient role in regulating photosynthesis and maintaining leaf water status through stomatal control, and can also play an important role in osmotic adjustment.  相似文献

Two new species of the shore-fly genus Psilephydra Hendel, 1914, Ps. montanasp. n. and Ps. rupicolasp. n., are described from Nepal (environs of Dhunche). Both species were found in the same habitat and were captured on moist cliffs in the mountains at the elevation of 2040 m a. s. l. Individuals of Ps. montana are easily differentiated from those of the other Psilephydra species by the presence of facial setae and by a characteristic shape of the gonite. Individuals of Ps. rupicola differ in a high gena, acinaciform gonite, and in the presence of 6 spines on the posteroventral surface of the fore femur. A key to the species of the genus Psilephydra is composed.  相似文献

Few studies have focused on analyzing the effect of native inoculated ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungal strains on seedlings under field conditions in temperate forests. However, it is crucial to verify that the positive effects of ECM under nursery conditions also occur in the field, favoring their performance. We evaluated the short-term effect of ECM on three-year-old seedlings of Pinus hartwegii and Abies religiosa in central Mexico by subjecting them to four treatments: inoculation with Inocybe splendens, inoculation with Suillus brevipes (both native strains), inoculation with forest soil, and non-inoculated plants. Percentage of ECM colonization, plant growth (shoot height and stem diameter), and physiological (osmotic potential, stomatal conductance, CO2 assimilation and water use efficiency) responses were evaluated. We found that these two ECM species were partial (P. hartwegii) or totally (A. religiosa) replaced after one and a half years in the field. P. hartwegii seedlings increased their water use efficiency during the dry season, but in A. religiosa seedlings, a clear strategy for avoiding water stress was not detected. This ECM replacement had a negative effect on the physiological performance Of A. religiosa. Our results emphasize the importance of selecting compatible fungal-host species combinations for nursery inoculation and of using sources of inoculum adapted to the environmental conditions of the transplant site, ensuring root colonization prior to field transplanting to minimize seedling mortality due to water stress.  相似文献

Within-canopy variation in leaf structural and photosynthetic characteristics is a major means by which whole canopy photosynthesis is maximized at given total canopy nitrogen. As key acclimatory modifications, leaf nitrogen content (N A) and photosynthetic capacity (A A) per unit area increase with increasing light availability in the canopy and these increases are associated with increases in leaf dry mass per unit area (M A) and/or nitrogen content per dry mass and/or allocation. However, leaf functional characteristics change with increasing leaf age during leaf development and aging, but the importance of these alterations for within-canopy trait gradients is unknown. I conducted a meta-analysis based on 71 canopies that were sampled at different time periods or, in evergreens, included measurements for different-aged leaves to understand how within-canopy variations in leaf traits (trait plasticity) depend on leaf age. The analysis demonstrated that in evergreen woody species, M A and N A plasticity decreased with increasing leaf age, but the change in A A plasticity was less suggesting a certain re-acclimation of A A to altered light. In deciduous woody species, M A and N A gradients in flush-type species increased during leaf development and were almost invariable through the rest of the season, while in continuously leaf-forming species, the trait gradients increased constantly with increasing leaf age. In forbs, N A plasticity increased, while in grasses, N A plasticity decreased with increasing leaf age, reflecting life form differences in age-dependent changes in light availability and in nitrogen resorption for growth of generative organs. Although more work is needed to improve the coverage of age-dependent plasticity changes in some plant life forms, I argue that the age-dependent variation in trait plasticity uncovered in this study is large enough to warrant incorporation in simulations of canopy photosynthesis through the growing period.  相似文献

Although tree-ring chronologies of Cedrela fissilis and Cedrela angustifolia showed a common climatic signal, local conditions influence growth, suggesting that forest guidelines should be appropriate to the species and context.

Abstract

Cedrela species are highly valued because of the quality of their timber. Understanding the behaviour of each different Cedrela species and their ecology is of importance to ensuring that forest harvesting and management do not endanger the survival of natural populations. These species grow in a wide range of environmental gradients and different types of forests in Bolivia. This study used dendrochronological methods to analyse growth–precipitation relationships of two Cedrela species coming from three locations with different environmental conditions: dry Chiquitano (Concepción), Chiquitano transitional Amazonian (Guarayos), and Bolivian-Tucuman montane forests (Postrervalle). The rainy season in all locations runs from October to April and the dry season runs from May to September. Twelve Cedrela fissilis specimens were sampled from dry Chiquitano, 11 Cedrela fissilis specimens from Chiquitano transitional Amazonian, and 30 Cedrela angustifolia specimens from Bolivian-Tucuman montane forests. The samples were crossdated and exhibited a common signal between trees from three sites, despite tree rings from the Chiquitano transitional Amazonian forest being narrower and displaying blurred bands of parenchyma in the boundaries. Significant inter-series correlation was found for the C. fissilis species series from dry Chiquitano with r = 0.261 (p < 0.01) and Chiquitano transitional Amazonian forests with r = 0.284 (p < 0.01), and for Cedrela angustifolia from Bolivian-Tucuman montane forests with r = 0.374 (p < 0.01). Mean annual growth was 2.07, 1.92, and 2.82 mm year?1 at the three sites, respectively. Cedrela species from dry Chiquitano and Bolivian-Tucuman montane forests were sensitive to precipitation from October to April of the current growth year (wettest season) and to low temperatures from May to July of the current growth year (driest season). Samples from Chiquitano transitional Amazonian were more sensitive to precipitation during late rainy season (March, April, and May of the current growth year) and high temperatures during the rainy months (November–December). Growth differences between sites and species in response to climate variations and local conditions should be taken into account and handled with different forest management guidelines.

Leaf-cutting ants are responsible for much of living plant fragment removal in Neotropical regions, causing major damage in both in natural and agricultural systems. To understand the variation in plant fragment removal by leaf-cutting ants and the influence that temporal and spatial factors have on such variation, we evaluated plant fragments collected by two ant species, Atta laevigata and A. sexdens rubropilosa in different seasons (rainy and dry) and in different forest systems (natural area of cerrado sensu stricto and monoculture of Eucalyptus sp.) in 2014 in Goianésia, Goiás, Brazil. Heavier plant fragments were removed during the dry season and in monoculture areas; A. laevigata removed heavier fragments than A. sexdens rubropilosa. Furthermore, we observed a positive association between the weight of collected fragments and the weight of worker ants and higher weights in A. laevigata. The study shows that the weight of plant fragments removed by leaf-cutting ants is conditioned temporally and spatially, and by the ant species involved. More detailed studies of each of these factors are need to better understand the dynamics of these foraging ants and how abiotic and biotic factors affect this process.  相似文献

Chusquea is a diverse but monophyletic genus of Neotropical woody bamboos from primarily montane forests that comprises four well-supported lineages: subg. Magnifoliae, subg. Platonia, subg. Rettbergia, and the Euchusquea clade (comprising subg. Swallenochloa and subg. Chusquea). However, the relationships among clades or taxa within the Euchusquea clade inferred from molecular data are mostly not congruent with those inferred from morphological evidence, consequently limiting our ability to understand species relationships. In this study we generated foliar micromorphological and anatomical data for the Chusquea ramosissima informal group (Chusquea ramosissima, C. tenella, and C. tenuiglumis), and for the putative new species from Bolivia in this group, in order to test the value of these types of data for defining species and to seek potential synapomorphies for this group. Our results demonstrate that epidermal features, mainly with regard to the stomatal apparatus, proved to be more valuable in distinguishing species than anatomical characters. The presence of horizontally elongated silica cells over the veins and adaxial arm cells with invaginations from the abaxial side was shared by all the studied species but is not unique to this group. The type of trichomes, shape of silica bodies, type of arm cells, and midrib structure may be useful to lesser degree. All four species exhibited intraspecific variation in development of the papillae on the long cells. Support for the recognition of the new species from Bolivia is provided by micromorphological characters. An identification key based on leaf blade features is provided for the four studied species.  相似文献

Rinorea, the second most species-rich genus in the Violaceae, has been shown to be polyphyletic with four separate clades recovered in phylogenetic studies. Among these clades is the Rinorea crenata group, which is composed of three Neotropical species. This group has been shown in family- and genus-level molecular phylogenies to be resolved outside of a large clade representing Rinorea s.str. Based on phylogenetic, morphological, and anatomical evidence, Bribria, a new genus, is segregated from Rinorea s.str. and described, with new combinations made for its three species: Bribria apiculata, Bribria crenata, and Bribria oraria. In addition, two new sections in Rinorea s.str. are described to accommodate the remaining Neotropical species: Rinorea sect. Rinorea and Rinorea sect. Pubiflora, which correspond to Group IIa Rinorea and Group IIc Pubiflora, respectively, in W. H. A. Hekking’s monograph of Neotropical Rinorea.  相似文献

Salix psammophila and Caragana korshinskii are two common shrubs in the southern Mu Us Desert, China. Their hydraulic strategies for adapting to this harsh, dry desert environment are not yet clear. This study examined the hydraulic transport efficiency, vulnerability to cavitation, and daily embolism refilling in the leaves and stems of these two shrubs during the dry season. In order to gain insight into water use strategies of whole plants, other related traits were also considered, including daily changes in stomatal conductance, leaf mass per area, leaf pressure–volume parameters, wood density and the Huber value. The leaves and stems of S. psammophila had greater hydraulic efficiency, but were more vulnerable to drought-induced hydraulic dysfunction than C. korshinskii. The difference between leaf and stem water potential at 50 % loss of conductivity was 0.12 MPa for S. psammophila and 0.81 MPa for C. korshinskii. Midday stomatal conductance decreased by 74 % compared to that at 8:30 in S. psammophila, whereas no change occurred in C. korshinskii. Daily embolism and refilling occurred in the stems of S. psammophila and leaves of C. korshinskii. These results suggest that a stricter stomatal regulation, daily embolism repair in stems, and a higher stem water capacitance could be partially compensating for the greater susceptibility to xylem embolism in S. psammophila, whereas higher leaf elastic modulus, greater embolism resistance in stems, larger difference between leaf and stem hydraulic safety, and drought-induced leaf shedding in C. korshinskii were largely responsible for its more extensive distribution in arid and desert steppes.  相似文献

The Neotropical catfish genus Rhamdia inhabits rivers and lakes from Mexico to Argentina. Previous studies have found that the taxonomy of this genus, as well as that of R. quelen, remains controversial. The present study aims to contribute to the understanding of Rhamdia systematics by delimiting putative species, and to elucidate the pattern of genetic differentiation of Rhamdia at different geographic levels within the cis-andean region. Species boundaries were defined by Generalized Mixed Yule Coalescent and Automatic Barcode Gap Discovery methods, and by phylogenetic analyses of cytochrome b (cyt b) sequences. Moreover, we performed phylogeographic analyses based on cyt b sequences and microsatellite markers. Patterns of differentiation were analyzed at three nested geographic levels: in the main cis-andean basins (macrogeographic scale); in the second major Neotropical basin system (mesogeographic scale), which encompasses La Plata basin, Patos-Merin basin, and the coastal lagoons draining to SW Atlantic Ocean; and finally, in the three most important coastal lagoons for artisanal fisheries in Uruguay (microgeographic scale). Sixteen species were found within Rhamdia, divided into two clades (cis- and trans-andean clades), each composed of eight putative species. Cis-andean Rhamdia species have probably diverged due to vicariance events occurring between and within basins since late Miocene-Pleistocene. Microgeographic scale analysis based on cyt b and microsatellite data revealed a high genetic structuring among the studied coastal lagoons. Mitochondrial and microsatellite markers enabled to identify three different populations, corresponding to the three coastal lagoons analyzed, which would have diverged recently and could be considered as different Management Units.  相似文献

Comparing with other angiosperms, most members within the family Orchidaceae have lower photosynthetic capacities. However, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Cypripedium and Paphiopedilum are closely related phylogenetically in Orchidaceae, but their photosynthetic performances are different. We explored the roles of internal anatomy and diffusional conductance in determining photosynthesis in three Cypripedium and three Paphiopedilum species, and quantitatively analyzed their diffusional and biochemical limitations to photosynthesis. Paphiopedilum species showed lower light-saturated photosynthetic rate (A N), stomatal conductance (g s), and mesophyll conductance (g m) than Cypripedium species. A N was positively correlated with g s and g m. And yet, in both species A N was more strongly limited by g m than by biochemical factors or g s. The greater g s of Cypripedium was mainly affected by larger stomatal apparatus area and smaller pore depth, while the less g m of Paphiopedilum was determined by the reduced surface area of mesophyll cells and chloroplasts exposed to intercellular airspace per unit of leaf area, and much thicker cell wall thickness. These results suggest that leaf anatomical structure is the key factor affecting g m, which is largely responsible for the difference in photosynthetic capacity between those two genera. Our findings provide new insight into the photosynthetic physiology and functional diversification of orchids.  相似文献

Invasive species are one of the greatest threats to biodiversity, due to competition, predation, pathogen spread, and hybridization. The latter may remain undetected and impair the survival of species, due to genetic admixture and hybrid swarming (i.e., interbreeding between hybrid individuals and backcrossing with parental species). The impact of invasive species remains poorly studied in the Neotropical ichthyofauna, particularly when considering the potential for hybridization between native and introduced species. Due to fisheries importance and its commercial value, species of the Prochilodus genus have been introduced to other catchments in Brazil. Here, we evaluate the introduction of non-native Prochilodus species and the potential effect of hybridization with the native migratory fish P. hartii. To evaluate possible introgression of Prochilodus spp. to P. hartii in the Jequitinhonha river basin (JRB), we employed a morphogenetic approach, analysing 219 specimens sampled from a broad extent of the river basin. Morphological analyses using meristic characters were incongruent with molecular identification by DNA barcoding (COI) in 22.83% of the analysed specimens. Haplotypes from three non-native species (P. argenteus, P. costatus, and P. lineatus) were recovered from specimens morphologically identified as P. hartii. Hybridization between P. hartii and introduced species was confirmed using co-dominant nuclear microsatellite markers. We observed a pronounced introgression pattern in this Neotropical basin, and paradoxically, despite being one of the most abundant migratory species native to the JRB, due to ongoing levels of introgression, P. hartii’s genetic integrity and conservation might be affected.  相似文献

Wild progenitors of common wheat are a potential source of tolerance to biotic and abiotic stresses. We conducted a glasshouse pot experiment to study genotypic differences in response to drought stress in a collection of 180 accessions of Aegilops and Triticum along with one tolerant and one sensitive control variety. Several physiological traits and chlorophyll fluorescence parameters were evaluated. Our findings indicated that drought significantly reduced shoot fresh (59.45%) and dry (50.83%) weights, stomatal conductance (41.52%) and maximum photosynthetic capacity (41.06%), but increased initial fluorescence (28.10%). Drought stress also decreased the chlorophyll content, relative water content and maximum quantum efficiency by 14.90, 12.13 and 11.42%, respectively. Principal component analysis of the 182 individuals identified three components that explained 57.61 and 61.68% of the total variation in physiological and photosynthetic traits under control and stress conditions, respectively. When grouped into the 12 species tested, the three top components explained 78.22% of the total variation under drought. The means comparison, stress tolerance index and biplot analysis identified five accessions with superior tolerance to drought. Remarkably, four species of wild relatives—Ae. cylindrica (DC genome), Ae. crassa (DM genome), Ae. caudata (C genome) and T. urartu (Au genome)—responded well to drought stress with a lower percentage decline for most traits and high values for the first two components. The potential of these species offers further opportunities for analysis at the molecular and cellular levels to confront with drought stress through a physiological mechanism.  相似文献

There are four new species of the Neotropical Anacharitinae genus Acanthaegilips Ashmead, 1897: A. boyacensis sp. n., A. curvis sp. n., A. timidus sp. n., and A. truncatus sp. n. The diagnostic characters of this new species and data about their morphological variability and similarities with other Acantahegilips species are discussed. An updated key of genus Acanthaegilips is included.  相似文献

Species complexes and cryptic species pose inherent challenges to taxonomists, systematists, and conservationists; Spiranthes (Orchidaceae) is a traditionally systematically challenging genus in which species complexes and cryptic species are a common phenomenon. Using an integrated approach of molecular phylogenetic, morphometric, and phenological data, we describe Spiranthes igniorchis, a new and rare species from frequently burned subtropical grasslands of Avon Park Air Force Range in south-central Florida. Spiranthes igniorchis is closely related and morphologically similar to Spiranthes longilabris, however S. igniorchis has smaller-sized flowers that bloom in the wet season, in contrast to S. longilabris, which has larger sized flowers that bloom in the dry season. We also present a discussion of its distinguishing characteristics and the challenges associated with species identification within Spiranthes.  相似文献

Tropical dry forests are strongly affected by seasonality, but its effects on belowground communities are poorly studied. Thus, the objective of this study was to reveal the effect of the season (dry versus wet) on the mycorrhizal status of roots and their potential colonization, and to determine the composition and abundance of spore-based communities of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) in rhizospheric soil of two dominant woody species in caatinga communities (tropical dry forest of the Brazilian Northeast). Soil and root samples were taken four times in each season (dry and wet). In the cases of the number of glomerospores and the number of infective propagules of AMF, there were significant differences between the hosts, with greater values observed in the rhizosphere of Commiphora leptophloeos than Mimosa tenuiflora. Mycorrhizal colonization and the number of infective propagules of AMF differed also between the seasons, being higher in the dry than the wet season. In total, fourteen AMF species were found in the rhizosphere of C. leptophloeos and twelve species were associated with M. tenuiflora. There was a predominance of the fungal genus Acaulospora, with seven species, followed by Gigaspora and Glomus. The species studied and the seasons differ in the composition and structure of the AMF community in the rhizosphere of the plants. The ecological significance of those differences needs to be examined further.  相似文献

The availability of sufficient irrigation water and the development of drought-tolerant species are challenging factors in the design and maintenance of green roofs in modern cities. Green roof plants of Petunia hybrid Headliner® Red Star, Ageratum hybrid Artist® blue, and Mentha spicata L. grown in a simulated green roof pot system under controlled greenhouse conditions. The plants were watered every 2 or 6 days (2DWI/6DWI) for 8 weeks accompanied by either a 6-day treatment of seaweed extracts of Ascophyllum nodosum as a soil drench or foliar spray, or two concentrations of trinexapac-ethyl (TE) biweekly sprays. Following treatments, leaf number, leaf area, dry weights, plant height, stomatal conductanse, photosynthetic and transpiration rates and leaf water potential and relative water content were determined in two seasons during 2016 and 2017. The prolonged irrigation intervals reduced plant growth as revealed by morphological and physiological parameters. The application of SWE as drench treatment improved Petunia and Ageratum plant vegetative growth, stomatal conductance, photosynthetic and transpiration rates and leaf water potential and relative water content during prolonged irrigation intervals. TE increased the vegetative growth as well as the physiological performance of Ageratum plants. However, neither SWE nor TE treatments improved the performance of Mentha plants under prolonged irrigation intervals. It was suggested that improved photosynthetic rates were stimulated by enhanced stomatal conductance leading to improved leaf water potential as well as increased relative water content during prolonged irrigation conditions.  相似文献
