The response to drought stress on germination was investigated on three hybrids of ornamental sunflower, ‘Hadar’, ‘Pazit’, and ‘Zohar’. Different levels of water potential [Ψ: 0.0 (control), ?0.15, ?0.30, ?0.45, ?0.60, ?0.75, and ?0.90 MPa] were adopted using polyethylene glycol-6000 (PEG6000) at four germination temperatures (15, 20, 25, and 30 °C). Final germination percentage, mean germination time, germination index, germination rate index, and germination stress tolerance index were used to evaluate the genotype response to PEG-induced water stress. Shoot and root length and fresh and dry weight were measured on seeds germinated at 20 °C under the different levels of water potentials. During germination, the three ornamental sunflowers showed to be more sensitive to suboptimal temperature than to supraoptimal. Decreasing water potential of imbibition solution progressively inhibited and delayed seed germination. Among cultivars, ‘Hadar’ and ‘Pazit’ performed better at temperature lower than 30 °C. ‘Zohar’ showed a lower sensitivity to PEG-induced water stress at all temperature conditions. Water stress during seed germination depressed the following seedling growth under favourable conditions. As a result, shoot and root length and fresh and dry weight was significantly lower in seedlings from seed germinated at ψ ≤ 0.45 MPa.

Few plants are habitat-indifferent halophytes (i.e., grow well in both saline and non-saline soils). These plants offer a good opportunity to study drought and salinity tolerances during germination for seeds developed and matured in soils differ in salinity. Here, we assessed drought tolerance during germination, as simulated with PEG, and response of germination to light and temperature for Suaeda vermiculata, a habitat-indifferent shrub. Seeds matured in saline and non-saline soils were germinated in six PEG concentrations (0 to ? 1.0 MPa) and put in three incubators adjusted at different temperatures in both light and dark regimes. Drought tolerance was greater for seeds of the non-saline than those of saline soils, especially at higher temperatures. Seeds of the saline soils germinated in the lowest osmotic potentials (? 0.8 and ??1.0 MPa) only at lower temperatures, but seeds of the non-saline soils germinated to higher levels at all temperatures. Tolerances to drought and high temperatures were greater in light for seeds of saline soils, but in darkness for seeds of non-saline soils. Germination rate index did not differ significantly between seeds of the two soil types in higher osmotic potentials, but was significantly greater in seeds of non-saline at lower osmotic potentials. Most seeds that failed to germinate in the PEG concentrations recovered their germination when transferred to distilled water. Germination recovery levels and speeds increased with the decrease in osmotic potentials. Seeds of the saline soil postpone their germination until arrival of suitable temperatures and effective rainfalls that ensure seedling survival in salty habitats of the arid unpredictable deserts.

Preservation of genetic diversity within germplasm repositories represents an important tool for plant conservation. However, seeds must tolerate extreme levels of post-harvest desiccation and cold to realize benefits of ex situ storage. Factors including local climate and habitat impact expression of desiccation and freezing tolerance especially for widely distributed species. Our aim here was to understand the influence of a latitudinal gradient on seed desiccation and cryo-freezing tolerance. We sampled mature U. paniculata seeds from two geographically and genetically distinct populations then examined seed-water relations and germination following desiccation via equilibrium drying assays (0.5 to 91% RH; ?797 to ?12.9 MPa). Germination ability after drying and subsequent cryo-freezing treatments (?196?°C, 1 to 1440 min) was also evaluated. Seeds of both populations displayed similar reverse sigmoid moisture sorption isotherms characteristic of desiccation tolerant tissues. Furthermore, initial seed water potential (?63 and ?90 MPa) was considerably lower than the lethal limit (?20 MPa) identified for desiccation sensitive tissues. Final germination (range 58–93%) and temporal patterns differed significantly between populations following desiccation and cryo-freezing stress, but these germination responses were similar to initial germination. A higher proportion of non-germinated, yet viable seeds remained for the northern compared to southern population. Location does influence germination response, but differential germination is related to seed dormancy rather than desiccation or cryo-freezing sensitivity. Ex situ conservation of U. paniculata is therefore feasible across the latitudinal gradient studied here.

Responses of seed germination to air temperature, water potential, light, and smoke were studied in the laboratory for seeds of the invasive bunch grass Pennisetum ciliare (L.) Link (syn. Cenchrus ciliare L.; buffel grass). First introduced to North America during the mid-twentieth Century for establishing pastures, this African bunch grass has become an invasive species of concern. Across all the experiments conducted, a low germination was observed for P. ciliare fascicles that never exceeded 30 % at 21 days after sowing. Optimal day/night air temperatures for germination, controlled with an environmental chamber, were 25/15 and 30/20 °C, while extreme temperatures of 15/5 and 45/35 °C inhibited germination. By sowing seeds of P. ciliare under different water potentials, created with aqueous solutions of polyethylene glycol, an optimum of ?0.03 MPa led to the highest germination, while no germination was observed at ?1.0 MPa. Monochromatic optical filters were utilized to germinate seeds under various wavelengths, of which red (650 nm) and far red (730 nm) led to the highest germination. In addition, seeds that were incubated in the dark had higher germination than those incubated under white light. Incubation in smoke water, which can stimulate germination of pyrophytic species, resulted in a marginal inhibition of germination compared with imbibition with distilled water.

Medicago sativa L. cv. Longzhong is a nutritious forage plant in dryland regions of the Loess Plateau with strong drought tolerance and broad adaptability. To understand the adaptation mechanism of alfalfa (M. sativa L. cv. Longzhong) to drought stress, growth, and physiological parameters including levels of chlorophyll content, osmotic adjustment, reactive oxygen species (ROS), and antioxidant enzymes and antioxidants were measured under simulated levels of drought (? 0.40, ? 0.80, ? 1.20, ? 1.60, and ? 2.00 MPa). The changes in M. sativa L. cv. Longzhong were compared with those of plants of M. sativa L. cv. Longdong control (Variety I) suited to moderate rainfall areas and M. sativa L. cv. Gannong No. 3 (Variety II) suited to irrigated areas. The results showed that root–shoot ratio, the chlorophyll (a + b) and osmolytes contents, the degree of lipid peroxidation and ROS production, and the levels of antioxidative enzymes and antioxidants increased significantly with increasing drought stress, whereas plant height, aboveground biomass, chlorophyll a/b ratio, leaf water potential (Ψ1), and relative water content (RWC) decreased in response to drought. The Longzhong variety responded early to beginning drought stress (between 0 and ? 0.4 MPa) compared with the controls. Under drought stress (between ? 0.4 and ? 2.0 MPa), the Longzhong variety had significantly higher belowground biomass, root–shoot ratio, Ψ1, RWC, catalase (CAT) activity and reduced glutathione content than those of Varieties I and II, but hydrogen peroxide and hydroxyl free radical (OH·) contents were significantly lower. Step regression analysis showed that OH·, CAT, malondialdehyde, superoxide anion-free radical (O 2 ·? ), and superoxide dismutase of Longzhong had the most marked response to drought stress. In conclusion, the stronger drought tolerance of the Longzhong variety might be due to its higher water-holding capacity, root–shoot ratio, and ability to coordinate enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidant systems, which coordinate the peroxidation and oxidative systems.

Germination studies are important for collecting information on field seedling recruitment, plant conservation and restoration. This study investigated the role of light, temperature, nitrogen, water stress and burial depth in controlling germination of Stipa bungeana seeds. S. bungeana seeds are photo-inhibited; light significantly decreased seed germination regardless of temperature and water conditions. Seeds germinated at 10–30° C, and the highest germination was 72 % and 88 % at 20° C in light and dark, respectively. Thermal model analysis showed that presence of light significantly increased average thermal requirement [θ T (50)] from 105°Cd to 186°Cd at sub-optimal temperature, implying that light delays seed germination. Hydrotime model analysis showed that presence of light caused a shift in the median base water potential [Ψ b(50)] from ?0.68 to ?0.26 MPa, which partly explains why light decreased both percentage and speed of germination, even at optimal conditions. As burial depth increased, seedling emergence initially increased and then decreased; the highest seedling emergence recruitment was 43 %, for seeds buried at a depth of 1 cm. Field observations showed that seedling emergence occurred primarily from July to September, and scarcely occurred from April to June. These results suggest that the light inhibitory effect is an adaptive mechanism that prevents S. bungeana seeds from germinating on the soil surface. To attain highest seedling establishment, seeds of S. bungeana should be sown at a soil depth of 1 cm prior to the rainy season, using seeds stored for 1 year.

Biofuel plants such as Jatropha curcas L. have potential to support the livelihoods of rural communities and contribute to sustainable rural development in Africa, if risks and uncertainties are minimized. Yet, recent papers have warned of the risk of biological invasions in such tropical regions as a consequence of the introduction of exotic biofuel crops. We investigated the seed dispersal risk and invasiveness potential of both J. curcas monoculture plantations and live fences into adjacent cultivated and uncultivated land use systems in Sissili province, Burkina Faso. Invasiveness potential was assessed through (i) detecting evidence of natural regeneration in perimeters around J. curcas plantations and live fences, (ii) assessing seed dispersal mechanisms, and (iii) assessing seedling establishment potential through in situ direct seed sowing. Spontaneous regeneration around the plantation perimeters of the three sites was very low. Individual seedling density around J. curcas live fences was less than 0.01 m?2 in all sites. Seventy percent of the seedlings were found close to the live fence and most of them derived from the same year (96 %), which indicates low seed-bank longevity and seedling survival. J. curcas can be dispersed by small mammals and arthropods, particularly rodents and ants. In some sites, such as in Onliassan, high secondary seed dispersal by animals (up to 98 %) was recorded. There were highly significant differences in germination rates between seeds at the soil surface (11 %) and those buried artificially at 1–2-cm depth (64 %). In conclusion, we failed to find convincing evidence of the spreading of J. curcas or any significant impact on the surrounding environment.

In this study, we investigated the influence of cold stratification on seed germination in S. × niederederi, a hybrid between the North American S. canadensis and the European S. virgaurea, using fruit samples collected in 2016 in Poland. We aimed to test the hypothesis that the low temperature exposure decreases the final percentage and speed of seed germination in the hybrid and its parental species. For each species, sets of 100 achenes in three replications were mixed with dry sand and stored in Petri dishes in darkness for 12 weeks, at ?18 °C and?+?4 °C, and?+?25 °C. The seeds were incubated for 21 d at room temperature (+25 °C), under the 12 h photoperiod (630 lx). We showed a lack of significant differences in: (i) the final percentage of germinated seeds of studied species stored at the same conditions, (ii) the final percentage of germinated seeds between the applied stratification conditions in the hybrid and its parental species, and (iii) the mean values of Timson’s index, mean germination time, and coefficient of velocity of germination between the stratification conditions in each species. The statistically significant inter-specific differences in the mean germination time parameter after the +25 °C treatment suggest that the seeds of S. × niederederi are able to germinate faster than the seeds of its parental species. However, to improve our knowledge of naturalization and invasion abilities of S. × niederederi by sexual reproduction, the seed germination and seedling survival of the hybrid should be tested in the field.

In situ edaphic factors affecting seed germination and seedling emergence of three framework species of Acacia were investigated with the intent of developing fundamental and scalable restoration capacity for Arabian dryland restoration. Direct seeding represents the most efficient means to restore vegetation at the landscape scale and this study provides insight into edaphic and ecological limitations, as well as effective protocols governing the use of native seeds for restoration in hyper-arid environments. The study was conducted in extant Acacia woodland habitat on conserved land (Thumamah Nature Park) in close proximity to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Broad-scale direct seeding using un- and pretreated Acacia gerrardii, A. tortilis, and A. ehrenbergiana seed, and two seed burial depths were implemented across three sites with distinct soil surface characteristics. Eight weeks post-sowing, random samples for each species × seed treatment × burial depth combination were excavated, sieved, and categorized as follows: failed to germinate, germinated but died prior to emerging, or successfully emerged. We show that germination and emergence of Acacia gerrardii, A. tortilis, and A. ehrenbergiana were driven by a three-way interaction among species, site, and seed burial depth. Treating seed with the signaling compound Moddus did not have a definitive effect, positive or negative, on any of the species investigated. Acacia gerrardii was the only species that exhibited widespread emergence, though emergence was not consistent across sites or burial depths. Germination was highest in disturbed soil (up to 69% for A. gerrardii), but very few (<2%) successfully emerged; a greater proportion of germinants in sandy soil emerged (up to 44% for A. gerrardii) even though the overall germination was less. Though species-dependent, a 2-cm sowing depth was most effective in sand; while in disturbed soil, sowing depths of 1 and 2 cm were comparable; and no germination was observed in gravelly clay soil. Sandy soil exhibited rapid water infiltration (107.6 mm min?1), and post-sowing surface crusting was a non-factor (0.44 kg cm?2). Disturbed soil exhibited moderate water infiltration (1.46 mm min?1) and post-sowing surface crusting was double that of sand (0.88 kg cm?2) and restrictive on seedling emergence. Gravelly clay exhibited extremely poor water infiltration (0.12 mm min?1), and surface crusting was severe (4.49 kg cm?2) and an order of magnitude greater than sand. The medium-coarse sand fraction, a key driver of the observed soil surface processes, was greatest in sand (55%) and significantly less and uniform in the disturbed (22%) and gravelly clay (22%) soils. Our findings demonstrate that soil surface characteristics and associated processes can dictate ecological processes at depths as shallow as 1–2 cm, and that soil crusts that slow water infiltration and impede seedling emergence rapidly reconstitute after disturbance; both are important considerations for restoring dryland vegetation.

Procedures for asymbiotic seed germination and seedling acclimatization were developed for Bletia purpurea, a threatened North America native terrestrial orchid. Six asymbiotic orchid seed germination media (Knudson C, PhytoTechnology Orchid Seed Sowing Medium, Malmgren Modified Terrestrial Orchid Medium, Vacin &; Went Modified Orchid Medium, ½-strengh Murashige &; Skoog, and BM-1 Terrestrial Orchid Medium) were examined for their effectiveness in promoting seed germination and protocorm development of B. purpurea in either a 0/24 h or 16/8 h L/D photoperiod. Germination occurred regardless of medium or photoperiod treatment. However, advanced seedling development (Stage 6) only occurred on Vacin &; Went Modified Orchid Medium in the 16/8 h L/D photoperiod. Further effects of photoperiod on in vitro seedling development were also examined. Shoot length, leaf width, root number and length, and fresh weight and dry weight in the 16/8 h L/D photoperiod were all significantly different when compared to the 8/16 h and 12/12 L/D photoperiods. In vitro seedlings were readily acclimatized to greenhouse conditions. Seedlings showed high survival all potting media. Seedlings acclimatized in Fafard Mix 4 potting medium developed significantly longer roots. Corm formation occurred regardless of potting media used.

This experiment was arranged to investigate the ability of hydrotime model (θH) for estimating soybean seed germination (cv. ‘JK’) under different accelerated aging periods (AAP, 0, 24, 48, and 72 h) at each of the following water potentials (ψ, 0, ??0.12, ??0.24, and ??0.36 MPa). Results indicated that both germination percentage (GP) and germination rate (GR) significantly influenced by ψ, AAP, and their interactions (P?<?0.01). GP and GR decreased by 62.6 and 47.3% with longer AAP from 0 to 72 h and by 90.7 and 81.5% with lower ψ from zero to ??0.36 MPa as compared to the control, respectively. Therefore, the effect of ψ on GP and GR was more than AAP. The θH value was constant (~?6.71 MPa h?1) till 50.6 h AAP and then linearly declined with the rate of 0.1545 MPa h?1 per hour increase in AAP until 72 h (~?50% lower than its initial value). The ψb(50) value was ? 0.343 MPa in the control and then increased (became more positive) by ~?70% until 72 h AAP (? 0.104 MPa). In general, GP and GR of soybean declined with the increasing ψb(50) which can be due to cell membrane damage and reduce the activity of enzymes and organelles during AAP. Based on our findings, the θH model could describe well these relationships and their parameters can nicely be used for simulating soybean seed germination under this condition.

Symbiotic seed germination is a critical stage in orchid life histories. Natural selection may act to favor plants that efficiently use mycorrhizal fungi. However, the necessary conditions for natural selection – variation, heritability, and differences in fitness – have not been demonstrated for either orchid or fungus. With the epiphytic orchid Tolumnia variegata as a model system, we ask the following questions: (1) Do seeds from different individuals in a population differ in germination and seedling development in the presence of the same fungi? (2) Do different mycorrhizal fungi (Ceratobasidium spp.) differ in ability to stimulate seed germination and growth in T. variegata? And (3) are the Ceratobasidium isolates that best induce seed germination and seedling development more closely related to each other than to isolates that are less effective? We performed symbiotic seed germination experiments in vitro. The experiments were done using mycorrhizal fungi isolated from T. variegata; relationships among the fungi were inferred from nuclear ribosomal ITS sequences. We found significant variation for both symbiotic germination and seedling growth among biparental seed crops obtained from a population of T. variegata plants. Differences among Ceratobasidium fungi in seed germination were significant. The fungi that induced highest seed germination and seedling development belonged to two of four clades of Ceratobasidium. The two experiments show that there is potential for natural selection to act on orchid–fungus relationships. Given that orchids vary in performance, and that mycorrhizal fungi are not geographically distributed homogeneously, mycorrhizae may affect population size, distribution and evolution of orchids.

Sand burial, persistent seed bank and soil water content (SWC) are three factors that potentially can affect regeneration in sand dune plant populations. To evaluate the effects of these three factors on population regeneration of Eremosparton songoricum, a rare and endangered legume, we investigated seed germination, seedling emergence and seedling survival in greenhouse and controlled field experiments in different sand dunes microsites. Freshly matured seeds are physically dormant, and the highest germination was only 9.3?±?5.8% at 25/10°C. Seed germination occurred at burial depths from 0 to 10 cm, but the maximum depth from which seedlings emerged was 6 cm; from 1 to 6 cm, the deeper the burial, the lower the percentage of seedling emergence. Only 36.2% of the total soil seed banks occurred at depths of 0?C6 cm. For artificially sown seeds at different dune microsites, mean seedling emergence percentage was 6.8%. Of 150 seedlings that emerged in the field investigation at the study site, only those germinating in flat sandy areas survived, and mean survival percentage was only 2.0%. Thus, the proportion of non-dormant seeds in soil seed banks that developed into seedlings and survived to the end of the growing season was only 0.2%. Minimum SWC for seed germination, seedling emergence and seedling survival was 2.0%. During monitoring of emergent seedlings in the field, low seedling recruitment was at least partly due to the rate of root extension (1.6?±?0.3 cm day?1) into the sandy soil, which was slower than that of the downward movement of plant-available moisture (2.8?±?0.6 cm day?1). Thus, population regeneration under natural conditions rarely occurred via sexual reproduction, owing to the limited water resources available for seedling establishment. Rational field seeding practices, including manually scarified or dry stored seeds before sowing, sowing the seeds at right time and suitable place, are suggested for ecological restoration of endangered E. songoricum populations.

Short or long-term ex situ conservation is becoming increasingly important in conservation of plants in today’s changing environments. One of the important steps in ex situ conservation is the collection and storage of seeds and the consequent establishment of seed germination protocols. Cerastium dinaricum (Caryophyllaceae) is an endemic, high elevation and rare species of European conservation concern. Because of its severely fragmented distribution along the Dinaric Alps, the populations are likely to undergo further shrinkage in the future, which addresses the need of a long-term effective conservation management. From the potential ex situ population management perspective, we focused our study on germination ecology of C. dinaricum. The study revealed that temperature considerably affected the germination of seeds, which germinate better at 20 °C rather than 10 °C. A period of cold-wet stratification also significantly improved the final germination percentage with more pronounced increase at 20 °C, while addition of GA3 increased the final germination percentage by breaking the dormancy of non-stratified seeds. Mechanical scarification did not improve germination; on the contrary, it resulted in the lowest germination success. Seeds grown in complete darkness germinated significantly better compared to control when they were exposed to cold-wet stratification. Contrary to previous studies on some alpine species, which germinate better when exposed to light, dark treatment resulted in the highest germination percentages with 70 and 90% germination success after 4 and 8 weeks of stratification, respectively.

Fluctuating temperature plays a critical role in determining the timing of seed germination in many plant species. However, the physiological and biochemical mechanisms underlying such a response have been paid little attention. The present study investigated the effect of plant growth regulators and cold stratification in regulating Leymus chinensis seed germination and dormancy response to temperature. Results showed that seed germination was less than 2 % at all constant temperatures while fluctuating temperature significantly increased germination percentage. The highest germination was 71 % at 20/30 °C. Removal of the embryo enclosing material of L. chinensis seed germinated to 74 %, and replaced the requirement for fluctuating temperature to germinate, by increasing embryo growth potential. Applications of GA4+7 significantly increased seed germination at constant temperature. Also, inhibition of GA biosynthesis significantly decreased seed germination at fluctuating temperatures depending upon paclobutrazol concentration. This implied GA was necessary for non-dormant seed germination and played an important role in regulating seed germination response to temperature. Inhibition of ABA biosynthesis during imbibition completely released seed dormancy at 20/30 °C, but showed no effect on seed germination at constant temperature, suggesting ABA biosynthesis was important for seed dormancy maintenance but may not involve in seed germination response to temperature. Cold stratification with water or GA3 induced seed into secondary dormancy, but this effect was reversed by exogenous FL, suggesting ABA biosynthesis during cold stratification was involved in secondary dormancy. Also, cold stratification with FL entirely replaced the requirement of fluctuating temperature for germination with seeds having 73 % germination at constant temperature. This appears to be attributed to inhibition of ABA biosynthesis and an increase of GA biosynthesis during cold stratification, leading to an increased embryo growth potential. We suggest that fluctuating temperature promotes seed germination by increasing embryo growth potential, mainly attributed to GA biosynthesis during imbibitions. ABA is important for seed dormancy maintenance and induction but showed less effect on non-dormant seed germination response to temperature.

The spatial and temporal fluctuations of water availability can be an obstacle for recruitment of many species in the restinga and might restrict seed germination and seedling growth in specific regeneration safe-sites. Clusia hilariana is one of the most dominant species of Restinga de Jurubatiba. This species has a high proportion of seedling establishment occurring inside the tanks of soil bromeliads underneath vegetation patches. Given the thin seed coats, the fast germination time and seed dispersal of C. hilariana during the dry season, we hypothesized that their major regeneration niche (the tanks of soil bromeliads) is related to susceptibility of seed germination and also seedling growth to low water availability. To test this hypothesis, seeds were germinated under decreasing water potentials using PEG 6000 solutions and seedlings were grown under varying water regimes. The percentage of seed germination progressively decreased at lower water potentials. After 38 days in ?1.0 MPa no seeds germinated. However, approximately 90% of seeds germinated when transferred to Ψ = 0 MPa. The relative growth rates of seedlings of C. hilariana did not differ between water treatments. Thus, the major regeneration niche of C. hilariana is not a consequence of a high sensitivity of seeds and seedlings to water shortage. Nonetheless, C. hilariana showed an array of seed and seedling traits that may help to overcome establishment constraints of the harsh environment of restingas.

Sedum oxypetalum is one of the dominant species in the xerophilous shrublands in the lava fields of the Basin of Mexico. Germination of this species was evaluated to understand its ecological response. We tested the effects of different pre-germination treatments (cold, and dry and wet heat) and storage time, as well as those of natural priming in two microhabitats with different disturbance levels. Experiments were performed in laboratory conditions under constant (25 °C) and fluctuating (20/30 °C) temperatures. Seeds did not germinate during burial and proved to be positively photoblastic. Under pre-germination treatments, final germination percentage was higher at 20/30 °C in seeds after four or more months of storage. None of the pre-germination treatments favored germination. Seeds can survive for more than 1 year and form a seed bank. Thus, seeds underwent natural priming that favored final germination percentage; however, germination rate and lag time were not affected by this process. In natural conditions, germination is delayed until the rainy season, improving the success of seedling establishment and growth. We discuss the role of fluctuating temperature in germination processes and the adaptations of seeds to their seasonal environment.

The effects of reduced water potential (ψ) on seed germination at 25 and 15 °C in unprimed (UP) and primed (P) seeds of two cultivars of sweet sorghum (cv. Keller and cv. Makueni local), were analyzed through the hydrotime model. Six ψ (from 0 to ?1.0 MPa) in polyethylene glycol 6000 (PEG) solutions were used for the tests. Seeds were primed in 250 g/L PEG solution at 15 °C for 48 h. Decreasing ψ of imbibition solution reduced and delayed germination. At 15 °C seeds germinated less and slower than at 25 °C at any ψ. Seeds of cv. Makueni local exhibited a greater sensitivity to water stress in terms of germination percentage, than seeds of cv. Keller, but they were faster in germination. Osmopriming was beneficial for seed germination, both in terms of final percentage and rate, at any temperature and ψ. The hydrotime analysis revealed that predicted θ H constant was increased when temperature was reduced to 15 °C and at this temperature median base water potential [ψ b(50)] for germination was higher (less negative) than at 25 °C. Seed priming shifted ψ b(50) towards more negative values and reduced θ H requirements for germination. At 25 °C the two cultivars behaved similarly while at 15 °C cv. Keller exhibited a ψ b more negative but required a greater θ H to germinate, indicating a greater water-stress tolerance but a slower germination, than cv. Makueni local. The application of the model allows to identify water stress tolerant cultivars during germination, to include into breeding programs for the selection of well-performing cultivars under stress conditions.
