Humic acid is natural biological organic, which has a high effect on plant growth and quality. However, the mechanisms of the promoting effect of humic acid on the volatile composition were rarely reported. In this study, the effects of soil application of humic acid on the chemical composition and nutrients uptake of Thymus vulgaris were investigated. Treatments comprised 0, 50, 75 and 100 g m?2. Essential oil was extracted by hydrodistillation and analyzed using GC–MS and GC–FID. Essential oil content was enhanced by increase of the humic acid level and its content ranged from 0.8% (control) to 2.0% (75 g m?2). Thirty-two volatile compounds were identified and these compounds were considerably affected by humic acid. The highest percentage of thymol (74.15%), carvacrol (6.20%), p-cymene (4.24%), borneol (3.42%), trans-caryophyllene (1.70%) and cis-sabinene hydrate (1.35%) as major compounds were observed in T. vulgaris under 100 g m?2 humic acid. There was a linear relationship (R2 = 97%) between humic acid levels and thymol as a major compound. The oils were dominated by oxygenated monoterpenes followed by monoterpene hydrocarbons and sesquiterpene hydrocarbons. Based on the path coefficient analysis, the highest direct effects on essential oil content were observed in monoterpene esters (3.465) and oxygenated sesquiterpenes (3.146). The humic acid application also enhanced the uptake of N, P, K, Mg and Fe in garden thyme. The highest N (2.42%), P (0.75%), K (2.63%), Mg (0.23%) and Fe (1436.58 ppm) were observed in medium supplemented with 100 g m?2 humic acid. In all, the utilization of humic acid could positively change nutrients uptake, essential oil content and its major constituents in T. vulgaris.  相似文献

We investigated the influence of light quality on the vulnerability of pepper plants to water deficit. For this purpose plants were cultivated either under compact fluorescence lamps (CFL) or light-emitting diodes (LED) providing similar photon fluence rates (95 µmol m?2 s?1) but distinct light quality. CFL emit a wide-band spectrum with dominant peaks in the green and red spectral region, whereas LEDs offer narrow band spectra with dominant peaks at blue (445 nm) and red (665 nm) regions. After one-week acclimation to light conditions plants were exposed to water deficit by withholding irrigation; this period was followed by a one-week regeneration period and a second water deficit cycle. In general, plants grown under CFL suffered more from water deficit than plants grown under LED modules, as indicated by the impairment of the photosynthetic efficiency of PSII, resulting in less biomass accumulation compared to respective control plants. As affected by water shortage, plants grown under CFL had a stronger decrease in the electron transport rate (ETR) and more pronounced increase in heat dissipation (NPQ). The higher amount of blue light suppressed plant growth and biomass formation, and consequently reduced the water demand of plants grown under LEDs. Moreover, pepper plants exposed to high blue light underwent adjustments at chloroplast level (e.g., higher Chl a/Chl b ratio), increasing the photosynthetic performance under the LED spectrum. Differently than expected, stomatal conductance was comparable for water-deficit and control plants in both light conditions during the stress and recovery phases, indicating only minor adjustments at the stomatal level. Our results highlight the potential of the target-use of light quality to induce structural and functional acclimations improving plant performance under stress situations.  相似文献

The essential oil from the leaves of Lippia gracilis was investigated for fumigant and residual activity against Tetranychus urticae (Acari: Tetranychidae) and Neoseiulus californicus (Acari: Phytoseiidae). The results were compared to eugenol, Ortus® and Azamax®, as positive controls. Gas chromatography (GC) and GC/mass spectrometry analysis enabled the identification of 28 compounds, accounting for 99.1?±?0.6% of the essential oil. The major constituents were carvacrol (61%), p-cymene (11%) and thymol (11%). Mites were more susceptible to the oil in fumigant tests than in residual tests. Among the components, thymol and β-caryophyllene had the greatest fumigant and residual toxicity against T. urticae, respectively. The role of selected constituents (carvacrol, p-cymene, thymol, limonene, β-pinene, 1,8-cineole, terpinolene and β-caryophyllene) in the acaricidal properties of the L. gracilis essential oil is also discussed. Fumigant and residual effects of Lippia oil were more selective than eugenol with regard to a natural enemy of T. urticae, Neoseiulus californicus. Experiments under greenhouse conditions demonstrated greater toxicity of the Lippia oil in comparison to the positive control at 24, 48 and 72 h after treatment. The results suggest that Lippia oil is a good candidate for the formulation of a botanical acaricide for the integrated management of T. urticae.  相似文献

In this study, we have compared the photosynthetic characteristics of two contrasting species of Tradescantia plants, T. fluminensis (shade-tolerant species), and T. sillamontana (light-resistant species), grown under the low light (LL, 50–125 µmol photons m?2 s?1) or high light (HL, 875–1000 µmol photons m?2 s?1) conditions during their entire growth period. For monitoring the functional state of photosynthetic apparatus (PSA), we measured chlorophyll (Chl) a emission fluorescence spectra and kinetics of light-induced changes in the heights of fluorescence peaks at 685 and 740 nm (F 685 and F 740). We also compared the light-induced oxidation of P700 and assayed the composition of carotenoids in Tradescantia leaves grown under the LL and HL conditions. The analyses of slow induction of Chl a fluorescence (SIF) uncovered different traits in the LL- and HL-grown plants of ecologically contrasting Tradescantia species, which may have potential ecophysiological significance with respect to their tolerance to HL stress. The fluorometry and EPR studies of induction events in chloroplasts in situ demonstrated that acclimation of both Tradescantia species to HL conditions promoted faster responses of their PSA as compared to LL-grown plants. Acclimation of both species to HL also caused marked changes in the leaf anatomy and carotenoid composition (an increase in Violaxanthin?+?Antheraxantin?+?Zeaxanthin and Lutein pools), suggesting enhanced photoprotective capacity of the carotenoids in the plants grown in nature under high irradiance. Collectively, the results of the present work suggest that the mechanisms of long-term PSA photoprotection in Tradescantia are based predominantly on the light-induced remodeling of pigment-protein complexes in chloroplasts.  相似文献

Two ornamental plants of Althaea rosea Cav. and Malva crispa L. were exposed to various concentrations of lead (Pb) (0, 50, 100, 200 and 500 mg·kg?1) for 70 days to evaluate the accumulating potential and the tolerance characteristics. The results showed that both plant species grown normally under Pb stress, and A. rosea had a higher tolerance than M. crispa, while M. crispa had a higher ability in Pb accumulation than A. rosea. Besides, lower Pb concentration (50 mg·kg?1) stimulated the shoot biomass in both plant species. Pb accumulation in plants was consistent with the increase of Pb levels, and the main accumulation sites were the roots and the older leaves. In addition, the photosynthetic pigments content and chlorophyll fluorescence parameters were influenced by Pb stress. In such case, both of the plants could improve the activities of antioxidant enzymes of superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), catalase (CAT) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX), and the contents of the total soluble sugar and soluble protein, which reached the highest value at Pb 100 mg·kg?1, as well as the accumulation of the total thiols (T-SH) and non-protein thiols (NP-SH) to adapt to Pb stress. Thus, it provides the theoretical basis and possibility for ornamental plants of A. rosea and M. crispa in phytoremediation of Pb contaminated areas.  相似文献

In the current scenario of climate change and increasing water scarcity there is an increased need to combine research efforts for the development of abiotic stress resistant crops, specifically plants able to support water deficit (WD). Polyamines (PAs) have been described as being involved in the regulation of many physiological processes and a variety of stress responses in plants. Arginine decarboxylase (ADC) is considered a key enzyme of the polyamine (PA) biosynthetic pathway. In this study, a T2 transgenic homozygous line of Medicago truncatula expressing the oat Adc under the control of CaMV 35S was obtained and was shown to have higher leaf accumulation of putrescine, spermidine and norspermidine compared to wild type plants. The photosynthetic parameters, leaf internal CO2 concentration (Ci), net CO2 assimilation rate (A), transpiration (E) and stomatal conductance (gs) of transformed and untransformed lines during WD and water deficit recovery experiments were measured by IRGA (infrared gas analyzer) and compared over time. Two light intensities were used, growth light intensity (391 μmol m?2 s?1) and saturating light intensity (1044 μmol m?2 s?1). Independently of the light intensity, and under WD, the transgenic line stood out with increased Ci, A, E and gs; suggesting a possible benefit of the augmented PAs under such disturbing environmental conditions. We showed that the constitutive expression of the oat Adc gene improve the physiological responses to WD and that WD recovered transgenic plants had higher seed yield, suggesting a possible benefit of PA metabolism manipulation in legumes.  相似文献

Leaf-cutting ants belonging to the genus Atta (Formicidae: Myrmicinae) are important pests in agricultural and forest environments. In the present study, we evaluated the formicidal activity of the essential oil of Pogostemon cablin and its nanoformulation on the leaf-cutting ants: Atta opaciceps (Borgmeier, 1939), Atta sexdens (Linnaeus, 1758), and Atta sexdens rubropilosa Forel, 1908. The nanoformulation was developed by magnetic stirring using polyoxyethylene (36%), pure ethanol (36%), essential oil of P. cablin (18%), and water (10%). Bioassays of acute toxicity by fumigation and behavioral bioassays in treated arenas, with and without choice, were performed. The essential oil of P. cablin and its nanoformulation demonstrated efficient insecticidal activity and irritability to ant species. The concentration required to kill 50% of workers varied from 1.06 to 2.10 μL L?1, with a mean time to death of less than or equal to 42 h. The essential oil of P. cablin and its nanoformulation reduced the displacement and velocity speed of the workers of A. opaciceps and A. sexdens rubropilosa in totally treated arenas. In the bioassays with choices, the three species of ants walked less and at a greater speed on the treated side of arena. This work demonstrates the potential of the essential oil of P. cablin and its nanoformulation to the generation of new formicidal products.  相似文献

The plant stress hypothesis posits that a herbivore’s reproductive success increases when it feeds on stressed plants, while the plant vigor hypothesis predicts that a herbivore preferentially feeds on more vigorous plants. We examined these opposing hypotheses by growing spider mites (Tetranychus urticae) on the leaves of stressed and healthy (vigorous) cucumber plants. Host plants were grown under controlled conditions at low, moderate, and high concentrations of NaCl (to induce salinity stress), at low, moderate, and high fertilizer concentrations (to support growth), and without these additions (control). The effects of these treatments were evaluated by measuring fresh and dry plant biomass, carotenoid and chlorophyll content, antioxidant enzyme activity, and concentrations of PO43?, K+, and Na+ in plant tissues. The addition of low concentrations of fertilizer increased dry mass, protein, and carotenoid content relative to controls, suggesting a beneficial effect on plants. The highest NaCl treatment (2560 mg L?1) resulted in increased Na+ and protein content relative to control plants, as well as reduced PO43?, K+, and chlorophyll levels and reduced catalase and ascorbate peroxidase enzyme activity levels. Analysis of life table data of T. urticae mites raised on leaves from the aforementioned plant groups showed the intrinsic rate of increase (r) for mites was 0.167 day?1 in control specimens, 0.125 day?1 for mites reared on plants treated with a moderate concentration of fertilizer (10 mL L?1), and was highest (0.241 day?1) on plants grown under moderate salinity conditions (1920 mg L?1 NaCl). Reproductive success of T. urticae did not differ on plants watered with a moderate concentration of NaCl or a high concentration of fertilizer. The moderately-stressed plants formed a favorable environment for the development and reproduction of spider mites, supporting the plant stress hypothesis.  相似文献

Salicylic acid (SA) may reduce the negative impact of water deficit on growth and metabolite yield of Thymus daenensis Celak subsp. daenensis Celak. The effect of foliar application of SA and reduced irrigation on growth, oil yield, chemical components, and antibacterial and antioxidant activities of T. daenensis in field condition were investigated. Treatments comprised 0.0, 1.5 and 3.0 M SA applied to plants under normal irrigation and stressed conditions. Results indicated that irrigation regime had a significant effect on growing degree days (GDD) required to reach early and full flowering. Foliar application of SA influenced GDD from early growing stage to 50 % and full flowering, minimum radius and canopy diameter. The highest values of oil content (3.2 % v/w) and yield (14.9 g m?2) were obtained from application of 3.0 M SA. Percentage of some chemical constituents in the essential oil extracted from the plants under stress was higher than non-stressed plants. Thymol content was significantly reduced under stressed conditions. Foliar application of SA significantly improved carvacrol, α-thujene, α-pinene and p-cymene contents in the oils, but reduced thymol and, β-caryophyllene amounts. Our results showed that foliar application of SA reduced the negative effect of water deficit on thymol content in the essential oil of T. daenensis. The essential oils of T. daenensis exhibited antioxidant and antibacterial activities when plants were sprayed with 1.5 and 3.0 M SA, respectively.  相似文献

Stress induced by water deficit is considered to be a global problem and one of the most important factors limiting crop production in arid and semi-arid regions of the world. Application of certain microorganisms, including arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), is considered to be an effective and sustainable strategy to mitigate the problem. A pot experiment was conducted in the field (from Feb. to Sep. in 2013–2014 in Isfahan, Iran) to assess the effectiveness of AMF inoculation on changes in biomass, essential oils, nutrient uptake and water-use efficiency of rose geranium (Pelargonium graveolens L.) experiencing stress induced by a deficit of water. The experiment was planned as a factorial experiment, using a completely randomized design, with two factors, including four AMF inoculation (non-mycorrhizal, Rhizophagus intraradices and Funneliformis mosseae inoculated, and the combination of both species) and three irrigation levels including well-watered (WW), moderate water deficiency (MWD) and severe water deficiency (SWD). The results indicated the occurrence of an adverse effect of water deficit on plant total biomass; however, AMF inoculation positively increased plant biomass compared to the non-inoculated ones under three irrigation levels. MWD condition resulted in higher essential oil (EO) content (12.4 %), water-use efficiency (WUE) (29.5 %) and glomalin-related soil proteins (GRSP) (19.1 %) in the plants compared to WW condition. Furthermore, all AMF inoculation improved EO content by at least 12 k%. The results also showed that severe water deficiency adversely affected the uptake of most nutrients by plants especially in non-inoculated plants. The results also revealed that, although EO production was under the control of irrigation regime, nutrient uptake was critically dependent on an association with mycorrhizae. Notwithstanding the fact that rose geranium can tolerate moderate drought stress, the high responsiveness of rose geranium to AMF under water deficiency stress confirms the key role of AMF in facilitating the production of this valuable crop in harsh environments. Dual infection of rose geranium with two AMF species could also synergistically affect biomass, essential oil content and mineral elements absorption.  相似文献

We studied the possible roles of flavonoids in the antioxidant and antiherbivore chemistry in Jatropha curcas (L.), a Latin American shrub that holds great potential as a source of biofuel. Changes in flavonoid concentrations in the leaves of J. curcas seedlings exposed to artificial damage and to different rainfall patterns were assessed by applying a 32-factorial experiment in a greenhouse. The concentrations of different flavonoids in the leaves of seedlings were significantly affected by interaction effects of artificial damage, drought stress and age of the seedling. The highest flavonoid concentrations were obtained in seedlings imposed to the highest percentage of artificial damage (50 %) and grown under extreme drought stress (200 mm year?1). In this treatment combination, flavonoid concentrations were three-fold as compared to seedlings exposed to the same level of artificial damage but grown in 1900 mm year?1 rainfall application. Without artificial damage, the concentration of flavonoids in the seedlings grown in 200 mm year?1 rainfall application was still two-fold compared to seedlings grown in higher (>800 mm year?1) rainfall applications. Thus, the observed flavonoid concentration patterns in the leaves of J. curcas seedlings were primarily triggered by drought stress and light rather than by artificial damage, suggesting that drought causes oxidative stress in J. curcas.  相似文献

The availability of sufficient irrigation water and the development of drought-tolerant species are challenging factors in the design and maintenance of green roofs in modern cities. Green roof plants of Petunia hybrid Headliner® Red Star, Ageratum hybrid Artist® blue, and Mentha spicata L. grown in a simulated green roof pot system under controlled greenhouse conditions. The plants were watered every 2 or 6 days (2DWI/6DWI) for 8 weeks accompanied by either a 6-day treatment of seaweed extracts of Ascophyllum nodosum as a soil drench or foliar spray, or two concentrations of trinexapac-ethyl (TE) biweekly sprays. Following treatments, leaf number, leaf area, dry weights, plant height, stomatal conductanse, photosynthetic and transpiration rates and leaf water potential and relative water content were determined in two seasons during 2016 and 2017. The prolonged irrigation intervals reduced plant growth as revealed by morphological and physiological parameters. The application of SWE as drench treatment improved Petunia and Ageratum plant vegetative growth, stomatal conductance, photosynthetic and transpiration rates and leaf water potential and relative water content during prolonged irrigation intervals. TE increased the vegetative growth as well as the physiological performance of Ageratum plants. However, neither SWE nor TE treatments improved the performance of Mentha plants under prolonged irrigation intervals. It was suggested that improved photosynthetic rates were stimulated by enhanced stomatal conductance leading to improved leaf water potential as well as increased relative water content during prolonged irrigation conditions.  相似文献

In the current investigation, the biological activities of essential oils obtained from organs of Ruta chalepensis plants grown under salt stress (0, 50 and 100 mM NaCl) were analyzed. Their chemical composition was often investigated by GC/FID and GC–MS and the antimicrobial activities towards eight bacteria (Salmonella All, Salmonella K, Escherichia coli 45AG, Escherichia coli 45AI, Staphylococcus aureus 9402, Staphylococcus aureus 02B145, Listeria 477 and Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 10145) and five fungi strains (Aspergillus, Saccharomycee crvisiale, Streptomyces griseus, Fusarium solani and Penicillium thomii) were studied. Results revealed that salt increased essential oil production in leaves at 50 and 100 mM NaCl. A total of 20 compounds were identified in leaves, undecan-2-one, nonan-2-one and geijerene being the dominant ones. In stems, 21 compounds were found; they were dominated by decan-2-one, geijerene, nonan-2-one and undecan-2-one. In contrast, roots exhibited a large variation with 25 volatile compounds and octyl acetate, methyl decanoate, phytyl acetate were the major ones. Salt stress induced significant antibacterial activity changes, mainly in leaves and stems. In leaves, the minimum inhibitory and bactericidal concentration decreased at 100 mM NaCl against Listeria 477, the two strains of E. coli (45AG and 45AI) and P. aeruginosa but it increased versus other bacteria. In stems, salt increased oil antibacterial activity against all strains except P. aeruginosa ATCC 10145. Root oil showed the least antibacterial activity under saline conditions versus Listeria 477 and P. aeruginosa ATCC 10145. As regards antifungal activity, NaCl reduced the antifungal activity of essential oils against the majority of fungi strains.  相似文献

The aim of the present study is to investigate the contribution of mycorrhization to the resilience of olive trees to drought. One-year-old olive plants were inoculated (Myc+) or not (Myc?) with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), and subjected to a 40-day-drought period. At regular intervals of the watering-off period and after rehydration period, water relations and gas exchanges parameters were measured. Similarly, the total soluble sugars, proline, and mineral nutrients concentrations were determined. The results revealed that Myc+ plants were less affected by drought than Myc? plants proving the involvement of the AMF in the alleviation of drought impact on olive tree. In fact, the turgor potential (Ψp) in Myc+ plants exhibited positive values during the whole treatment period, while Ψp in Myc? plants was negative mainly under severe stress intensity. Moreover, the stomatal function of Myc+ plants was less affected by drought compared to Myc? plants. The maximum of mycorrhizas relative drought alleviation rate (RDAR) was estimated to be 40% for Ψpd and RWC, 36% for the osmotic potential (ΨS), 86% for Ψp, 16% for gs, and 27% for E. The osmotic adjustment by proline was earlier in Myc+ plants than in Myc? ones. The inoculation with AMF also improved mineral uptake (K, N, Zn, and Fe). After 40 days of drought, Myc+ plants survive but not Myc? ones. In addition, the restoration of the irrigation permitted the Myc+ plants to recuperate from severe drought stress. To sum up, inoculation of young olive trees with the AMF improved their resilience to drought.  相似文献

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of partially N-acetylated chitosans with a degree of acetylation (DA) of 10% on in vitro propagation of an ornamental plant, Ipomoea purpurea, by emphasizing the importance of the degree of polymerization (DP) on in vitro plant development. The effects of either a chitosan oligomer mixture with a DP between 2 and 15 (5.0, 10.0, and 20.0 mg L?1) or chitosan polymer with a DP of 70 were compared with commonly used cytokinins [6-benzylaminopurine (BAP) and kinetin (KIN) at 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, and 4.0 mg L?1] and auxins [indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) and indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) at 0.25, 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 mg L?1]. The nodal explants used in this study were taken from donor plants obtained by germination of the seeds. The results indicated that all chitosan treatments had positive effects on the shoot induction, but only the oligomer mixture at 5 mg L?1 gave the best results for mean shoot number, shoot length, and leaf number, compared to the other treatments and control. Also, all chitosan treatments increased mean number of roots and triggered adventitious root induction. However, root elongation was decreased in the presence of chitosan in the medium. The root elongation-inhibitory effects of chitosan become clearer in the presence of oligomer mixture. In general, chitosan had similar effects with tested cytokinins rather than auxins. The results of this study suggested that the application of chitosan oligomers—rather than polymers—can be an eco-friendly and effective alternative to synthetic cytokinins in horticulture.  相似文献

The effects of a bioinsecticide formulation based on extract of Annona squamosa L. (Annonaceae) containing 10,000 mg L?1 of acetogenin annonin as the main active ingredient were investigated against three primary pest species of stored grains in Brazil [maize weevil Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), Mexican bean weevil Zabrotes subfasciatus (Boheman) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Bruchinae), and cowpea weevil Callosobruchus maculatus (Fabricius) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Bruchinae)] by means of residual contact bioassays. In a concentration-dependent manner, the annonin-based commercial bioinsecticide caused significant adult mortality of C. maculatus (LC50 = 6890 μL kg?1), S. zeamais (LC50 = 2781 μL kg?1), and Z. subfasciatus (LC50 = 2120 μL kg?1) after 120 h of residual contact exposure. In addition to acute toxicity, the tested bioinsecticide also promoted a significant reduction of the number of eggs laid by females of C. maculatus (EC50 = 5949.7 μL kg?1) and Z. subfasciatus (EC50 = 552.7 μL kg?1). Moreover, the bioinsecticide significantly reduced the number of emerged insects (F1 generation) of C. maculatus (EC50 = 2763.0 μL kg?1), S. zeamais (EC50 = 1380.8 μL kg?1), and Z. subfasciatus (EC50 = 561.5 μL kg?1). The bioinsecticide also reduced the percentage of damaged grains for the three pest species studied, and its grain-protectant properties are comparable to or superior in efficacy in relation to a diatomaceous earth-based insecticide (Insecto® at 1000 mg kg?1) used as a positive control. Thus, this standardized formulation has promising bioactivity against stored insect species and can be a useful component for IPM of stored grains in Brazil and elsewhere.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of essential oils obtained from Thymus vulgaris L., Origanum vulgare L., Origanum majerana L., Mentha × piperita L. and Allium ursinum L. against Prototheca zopfii strains that cause inflammation of the udder (mastitis) in cows. The study was conducted on ten strains derived from milk samples. The microdilution method was used to determine the sensitivity of P. zopfii strains to the studied essential oils, and the disk diffusion method was used to determine the sensitivity to antifungal chemotherapeutics. The plates were incubated for 48 h at 37 °C under aerobic conditions. All strains of algae were sensitive to the essential oils marjoram, thyme and oregano and resistant to mint and garlic oils. MIC values ranged from 0.25 to 1 μl/ml. Marjoram oil demonstrated the greatest activity, and oregano oil the weakest. Among the antifungal agents tested, 90% of strains showed sensitivity to nystatin. One of the tested strains (71/IV) was resistant to all investigated antifungal agents. The tested essential oils are known to have anti-algae activity and can be used as natural agents for prophylaxis in animals, particularly in mastitis-affected cows.  相似文献

Iron homeostasis was studied in two tropical indica rice cultivars viz. Sharbati (high Fe) and Lalat (low Fe) having contrasting grain Fe concentration. Plants were hydroponically grown with 5 concentrations of Fe (0.05, 2, 5, 15, 50 mg L?1) till maturity. The effect of incremental Fe treatment on the plant was followed by analyzing accumulation of ferritin protein, activities of aconitase enzyme, enzymes of anti-oxidative defense and accumulation of hydrogen peroxide and ascorbic acid. Plant growth was adversely affected beyond 15 mg L?1 of Fe supplementation and effects of Fe stress (both deficiency and excess) were more apparent on the high Fe containing cultivar Sharbati than the low Fe containing Lalat. Level of ferritin protein and aconitase activity increased up to 5 mg L?1 of Fe concentration. Lalat continued to synthesize ferritin protein at much higher Fe level than Sharbati and the cultivar also had higher activities of peroxidase, superoxide dismutase and glutathione reductase. It was concluded that the tolerance of Lalat to Fe stress was because of its higher intrinsic ability to scavenge free radicals of oxidative stress for possessing higher activity of antioxidative enzymes. This, together with its capacity to sequester the excess Fe in ferritin protein over a wider range of Fe concentrations made it more tolerant to Fe stress.  相似文献
