The interrelationship of growth and frost tolerance in winter rye   总被引:9,自引:0,他引:9  
The reduction in growth of winter cereals that occurs in the fall is thought to be required for the development of frost resistance. In the present study, the interrelationship of freezing tolerance and growth was examined by raising winter rye ( Secale cereale cv. Puma) plants at 20/16°C (day/night) and at 5/3°C under 8-, 16- and 24-h daylengths to vary growth rates and frost tolerance. Temperature and irradiance were quantified as thermal time, photothermal time and photosynthetic photon flux and examined by multiple linear regression in order to determine their effects on growth and frost tolerance of rye shoots. At low temperature, both growth and frost tolerance were markedly influenced by daylength and irradiance. Plants grown at 5/3°C with a short daylength accumulated shoot dry weight and increased frost tolerance at a greater rate per unit photothermal time or photon flux than plants grown at longer daylengths. Moreover, 5/3°C plants grown with a 16-h day grew more slowly and were less frost tolerant than plants grown with a 24-h day. We conclude that the interrelationship between growth and frost tolerance is a quantitative one. Frost tolerance is induced only by low temperature, but the development of forst tolerance is dependent upon both irradiance, which affects the amount of photoassimilate available, and daylength, which may affect the partitioning of photoassimilates between growth and frost tolerance.  相似文献

In 1986/1987 and 1987/1988 wild rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) were trapped and enclosed in a 0.3 ha site in which two varieties of winter barley (Igri and Panda) and two of winter wheat (Norman and Mission) were grown in a split plot block design experiment. The level of rabbit population was varied to emulate natural variation in numbers throughout the growing season and was regulated to produce a peak density of 77 rabbits ha-* in the first year, and 33 rabbits ha-1! in the second year. Grazing was managed by the use of exclosure fences around plots to produce four treatment levels - protected, autumn grazed, spring grazed and totally grazed regimes. Rabbit damage was assessed using stem and leaf damage indices several times through the growth of the crops. Yields were measured in terms of head number, grain weight and total yield. There was no evidence of varietal preference among the four cereal varieties on the basis of damage assessments. In the first year the totally grazed treatment led to an increase in the number of unripe heads present at harvest which would indicate a delayed harvest date in a field crop. Winter wheat showed a trend towards higher yield loss in spring-damaged plots, possibly linked to the time of tillering in this crop. Yield losses overall were highest in those plots grazed in either the autumn or throughout the entire season. The level of peak rabbit population did not appear to influence the degree of loss in either year. The results indicate that there may be a threshold of rabbit damage early in the growth of the crop which contributes most to the yield loss. This emphasises the importance of protecting a winter cereal crop at its establishment phase.  相似文献

A method is presented for the preparation of large DNA molecules from protoplasts embedded in agarose blocks of three different cereals-hexaploid bread wheat (Triticum aestivum), barley (Hordeum vulgare) and rye (Secale cereale). Pulse-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) analysis of these DNA preparations using a contour-clamped homogeneous field (CHEF) apparatus indicated that the size of the DNA molecules was greater than 6 Mb. DNA samples prepared by this method were shown to be useful for restriction analysis using both frequent and rare cutting enzymes.  相似文献

A method for the determination of the mycotoxin citrinin (CT) in rye, wheat and barley is described. The proposed method is based on ethyl acetate extraction, solid phase clean-up (SPE) on aminopropyl columns and reversed phase high performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection (RP-HPLC-FLD). The limits of detection and quantification of CT amounted to 0.6–0.9 μg/kg and 1.7– 3.3 μg/kg with mean recovery rates in the range of 77–92% (RSD 4.8–5.5%). The effects of straw baling or incorporation, combined with ploughing, non-inversion tillage, or direct drilling on the incidence of barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV), were investigated in plots of winter barley. Virus infection was more prevalent after ploughing (> 40% of the plot area damaged) than after non-inversion tillage (9 – 24%) or direct drilling (< 3%). For each cultivation method, more infection was associated with straw baling than with straw incorporation. There was a strong negative correlation between plot yields and the incidence of BYDV(r= -0.87). Monthly pitfall sampling of non-specific aphid predators showed that the population activity of several taxa (e.g. Linyphiidae, and the larger species of adult and larval Carabidae and Staphylinidae) declined for a short period in autumn-winter following cultivation. The overall treatment-ranking for numbers of predators in autumn (direct drilled > non-inversion > ploughed) was the opposite of subsequent virus infection. The possible roles of aphid predators and other biological mechanisms in determining the observed effects on BYDV, are briefly discussed.  相似文献

Summary Chromosomes of tetra- and hexaploid wheat have been individually characterized by Giemsa and/or Leishman C-banding techniques. Appropriate methodological modifications resulted in almost identical staining of chromosomes of tetraploid wheat with Giemsa and Leishman solutions. Additionally comparison of Giemsa banded chromosomes of the A- and B-genome of Triticum turgidum 34 and Triticum aestivum cv Jubilar reveals similar or corresponding patterns in all homologous chromosomes with the exception of chromosome 7B. Apart from this intervarietal variation in certain homologous chromosomes of both wheat cultivars, intravarietal polymorphism is verified.  相似文献

In recent years, advances in plant breeding were achieved, which potentially led to modified nutritional values of cereal grains. The present study was conducted in order to obtain a broad overview of ruminal digestion kinetics of rye, triticale and barley grains, and to highlight differences between the grain species. In total, 20 genotypes of each grain species were investigated using in situ and in vitro methods. Samples were ground (2 mm), weighed into polyester bags, and incubated in situ 1 to 48 h in three ruminally cannulated lactating dairy cows. The in vitro gas production of ground samples (1 mm) was measured according to the ‘Hohenheim Gas Test’, and cumulative gas production was recorded over different time spans for up to 72 h. There were significant differences (P<0.05) between the species for most parameters used to describe the in situ degradation of starch (ST) and dry matter (DM). The in situ degradation rate (c) and effective degradability (assuming a passage rate of 8%/h; ED8) of ST differed significantly between all grains and was highest for rye (rye: 116.5%/h and 96.2%; triticale: 85.1%/h and 95.0%; barley: 36.2%/h and 90.0% for c and ED8, respectively). With respect to DM degradation, the ranking of the species was similar, and predicted c values exhibited the highest variation within species. The in vitro gas production rate was significantly higher (P<0.05) for rye than for triticale and barley (rye: 12.5%/h; triticale: 11.5%/h; barley: 11.1%/h). A positive relationship between the potential gas production in vitro and the maximal degradable DM fraction in situ was found using all samples (r=0.84; P<0.001) as well as rye (P=0.002) and barley (P<0.001) alone, but not for triticale. Variation in ruminal in situ degradation parameters within the grain species resulted from the high c values, but was not reflected in the ED estimates. Therefore, the usage of mean values for the ED of DM and ST for each species appears reasonable. Estimated metabolisable energy concentrations (ME, MJ/kg DM) and the estimated digestibility of organic matter (dOM, %) were significantly lower (P<0.05) for barley than for rye and triticale. Developing a relationship between pest abundance and damage to crops is essential for the calculation of economic injury levels (EILs) and to anticipate informed management decisions. Field studies were conducted for three successive years (2005, 2006 and 2007) in peach orchards of northern Greece to examine relationships between densities of Anarsia lineatella Zeller (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) populations and peach (Prunus persica) yields. According to a linear regression model, the increase in moth’s densities during the 1st flight resulted in a significant reduction in yield (y = 0.436x + 10.22, R2 = 0.635, d.f. = 2,11, P < 0.05). Correlation of male moths captured during the 2nd flight and observed yield loss was significant (y = 0.5231x + 17.204, R2 = 0.792, d.f. = 2,11, P < 0.05). Moreover, according to a linear model by counting the number of shoot strikes, during the first observation period, a forthcoming yield loss can be estimated (y = 27.389x?6.304, R2 = 0.711, d.f. 2,11, F = 22.09, P < 0.05). A significant relationship was observed between the numbers of the 2nd generation larvae and yield loss (y = 163x, R2 = 0.890). Regression coefficient of the above function represents yield loss per pest and was applied in the calculation of EIL’s and fixed Economic thresholds (ET’s). In addition, parameter of the price commodity was estimated for 2009 by applying stochastic autoregressive moving average model. By integrating above information, EIL and fixed ET estimated as 112 larvae and 84 larvae per sampling unit for a mean value (€4/0.1 ha) of cost management tactics and a 90% efficacy.  相似文献

Root growth, development and frost resistance were examined in winter rye ( Secale cereale L. cv. Puma) plants grown under 6 combinations of temperature and photoperiod (20/16°C or 5/3°C, day/night; 8, 16- or 24-h days). Overall root system growth is influenced by the interaction of temperature and photoperiod. Maximum shoot growth occurs at a 24-h photoperiod in 20°C plants and at a 16-h photoperiod in 5°C plants, and is correlated in both treatments with a high root:shoot ratio. Frost resistance of rye roots is affected by short photoperiods in 2 ways. First, short photoperiod and low temperature delay production of new adventitious roots so that newly developing roots are not exposed to freezing temperatures. Second, short photoperiod alone can induce several degrees of frost tolerance in existing roots during the lag phase of growth. Low temperature alone does not decrease the rate of dry weight accumulation in rye root systems, but cold temperature does retard developmental processes within the roots. Rye roots grown at 5°C develop first order lateral roots, differentiate metaxylem vessels and suberize endodermal cell walls more slowly than roots grown at 20°C.  相似文献

Samples from 200–400 randomly selected winter barley crops were taken annually at growth stage 71–73 from 1981 to 1991, with the exception of 1984 and 1985. The number of samples from each region was proportional to the area of barley growth in each region. The percentage of the area of the top two leaves affected by diseases and the severity of stem base diseases were recorded. Mildew (Erysiphe graminis) was the most widespread of the foliar diseases and in three years (1982, 1986 and 1991) was also the most severe. Rhynchosporium (Rhynchosporium secalis), net blotch (Pyrenophora teres) and brown rust (Puc-cinia hordei) were also prevalent in some years. Of the stem base diseases, fusarium was often the most widespread. Eyespot (Pseudocercosporella her-potrichoides) severity varied widely from year to year ranging from 1.2% of stems affected by moderate or severe symptoms in 1982 to 24.1% in 1988. There were regional differences in the severity of mildew, rhynchosporium, brown rust, halo spot (Selenophoma donacis) and eyespot. Cultivar resistance affected disease severity and previous cropping affected eyespot and less frequently mildew, rhynchosporium and net blotch. Eyespot, and to a lesser extent, sharp eyespot, were less severe in late- than in early-sown crops. The percentage of crops treated with a fungicidal spray increased from 72% in 1981 to 95% in 1991. The use of benzimidazole fungicides for the control of eyespot declined in response to the development of resistance, and more recently the use of prochlo-raz also declined. Broad spectrum DMI fungicides were widely used, and the use of morpholines to improve mildew control increased significantly. The proportion of crops grown from seed treated with a non-mercurial fungicidal seed dressing reached a peak of 47% in 1986 but subsequently declined to 22% in 1990 and 1991.  相似文献

Summary Differences in salt tolerance of wheat and barley have been observed but knowledge of such differences in triticale (X Triticosecale Wittmack) cultivars is of potential importance. Effects of six salinity levels (0 to 2% NaCl) on germination of triticales Beagle and 6TA 131 in comparison to wheat and rye were determined at 15–20°C. Beagle triticale and rye showed similar trends in germination reduction as salinity increased from 0 to 1.5% NaCl and exhibited fairly high salt tolerance. However, 6TA 131 triticale and wheat showed a significant drop in germination even at 0.5% NaCl concentration and were more susceptible to salt injury.  相似文献

Haynaldia villosa is a wild grass of the tribe Triticeae, other members of which include the cultivated cereals barley, rye, and wheat. We have made an electrophoretic and chemical characterization of the major seed storage proteins (prolamins) of H. villosa and determined the chromosomal locations of the structural genes for some components using the available wheat/H. villosa chromosome addition lines. As in wheat, barley, and rye, groups of high molecular weight (polymeric), sulfur-poor (monomeric), and sulfur-rich (monomeric -type and polymeric) prolamins can be recognized. Most of the components are encoded by genes on chromosome 1 Ha, which is homologous with the chromosomes controlling many of the prolamins in wheat and rye and all of those in barley. In addition, H. villosa also contains -type sulfur-rich prolamins, previously detected only in wheat and its close relatives. These may be encoded by genes on chromosome 6Ha, which is homologous with the group 6 chromosomes that control the -type gliadins of wheat. Despite the proposed close relationship between Haynaldia and ryes, no evidence was found for the presence of proteins closely related to the M r 75,000 -secalins which are characteristic of wild and cultivated species of Secale.  相似文献

Winter barley (Hordeum vulgare L. cv. Kamiak) was grown at three landscape positions of a representative toposequence in the Palouse region of eastern Washington. This region is typified by rolling topography marked by severe erosion of steep slope positions that has altered soil productivity in the landscape. The objectives of this research were to identify soil factors which limit plant development and nutrient use efficiency in the eroded slope positions, and to suggest potential management practices for overcoming these limitations. Direct drilling into cereal stubble resulted in retardation of early plant development of winter barley. Lower N and P accumulation by early tillering under no-till conditions were related these effects on dry matter. These reductions were generally overcome by anthesis. Comparison of tillage systems demonstrated that direct drilling into crop residues increased yields by 16% over conventional tillage at an eroded ridgetop position of one of the two toposequences examined. Benefits derived in the no-till system under the high N rates occurred during grainfilling, as indicated by greater numbers of heads and higher kernel weights at final harvest. Tillage system had no effect on grain production at other landscape positions that featured higher overall yields under either tillage system. Short-term benefits of no-till systems may be most evident at slope positions where water use is most limited.  相似文献

  1. The most commonly used method to control insect pests, such as leaf-cutting ants (LCA) in forest plantations, is the application of chemical insecticides, but their use was forbidden in plantations certified by the Forest Stewardship Council because of their negative effect on the environment.
  2. A 5-year derogation of their prohibition was obtained in 2016 in Argentina, on the condition that forestry companies reduce pesticide doses by 5% per year and inform the Economic Injury Level (EIL).
  3. The EIL and the Economic Threshold (ET) were estimated for the first time for the Acromyrmex genus in a Salicaceae forestation. As a model, we used the damage caused by the most detrimental LCA species of Argentina (Acromyrmex lundii) in the first, most critical year of a willow plantation (Salix nigra) in the lower basin of the Paraná River.
  4. The EIL (8–15 nest/ha) was useful to demonstrate the real magnitude of the damage caused by A. lundii, which justified the need for its control. The ET for profitable production (∼3 nests/ha) would not be operatively applicable in a long-term management program in our study site. This methodology could be extrapolated to other Neotropical forest plantations attacked by Acromyrmex species.

Changes in the activities of peroxidase and amylase were measured during the development of grain of triticale, wheat and rye. Peroxidase and amylase activities were found to be higher in Triticale-1 which possesses highly shrivelled grains. A direct relationship between the degree to which the grain is shrivelled and the activity of peroxidase and enzymes was observed. During grain development, peroxidase and amylase activity per grain increased in Triticale-1, while it decreased in wheat, rye and well filled triticale grains.  相似文献
