A juvenile turtle from the upper Kimmeridgian (Upper Jurassic) of Nusplingen is identified as an eurysternid turtle. It differs in plastral morphology from a juvenile eurysternid turtle from the latest Kimmerdigian of Kelheim described in the 19th century, which represents a comparably early developmental stage. Both juveniles have primordial ribs not yet transformed into costals and lack all other carapacial elements whereas the plastral elements are well developed. The new specimen from Nusplingen has a more robust plastron type when compared to the very gracile, bow- or arc-shaped plastron type of the formerly described juvenile. Both plastron types are also represented by yet undescribed additional juvenile, medium-sized and/or larger eurysternid specimens. The juvenile specimens thus likely document the presence of two morphologically very similar eurysternid taxa in the Upper Jurassic of southern Germany. Both plastron types are different from those described for Idiochelys and Solnhofia but may resemble plastron morphology of Eurysternum, which is, however, only incompletely known.  相似文献

A review is given of observations and interpretations of the attachment in Isocrinida. It is concluded that all adult Isocrinida discard distal parts of their column and live attached by distal cirri to the bottom or to objects lying on the bottom. From time to time the column may break below a nodal and the isocrinid drift along the bottom until it regains attachment with the cirri. In undisturbed environments a considerable length of the tapering distal part of the column may be maintained, and several specimens may be connected by the entangled distal parts of the columns lying on the bottom. Specimens of Seirocrinus subangularis attached to tree trunks in the Lower Jurassic Posidonia shale of Holzmaden, Germany, have been interpreted as pseudoplanktic. These are all adult specimens with distal parts of their column discarded before they attached themselves to the trunks. Furthermore, since adult specimens cannot swim to the surface, they must have attached themselves to sunken trunks lying on the bottom.  相似文献

Compressions and impressions of an isoetalean lycopsid, comprising lower portions of stems, lobed bases, attached rootlets, and rounded rootlet scars, discovered in Late Devonian (Famennian) rocks of Clinton County, north-central Pennsylvania, Appalachian Basin, USA, are here described as Otzinachsonia beerboweri, gen. et sp. nov. These specimens demonstrate unequivocally the existence of the isoetalean lobe-and-furrow rhizomorphic growth pattern as early as the Late Devonian. They were found in an Archaeopteris- and Rhacophyton-dominated flora at Red Hill, an outcrop of the Duncannon Member of the Catskill Formation. The fossils were found in a dark-gray to greenish-gray lenticular siltstone layer that has an average thickness of 1.0 m. This deposit is interpreted as a floodplain pond. The low-energy nature of the deposit and the fine preservation of the intact rootlets of the specimens imply little or no transport. The plants were probably growing along the edge of the floodplain pond with their lower portions submerged for at least part of the year.  相似文献

Reproductive organs of Salvinia and Azolla were found together with other small plant remains in the Middle Miocene Fasterholt flora, Denmark. They were examined by the use of SEM and TEM; this was done with the three species of Azolla for the first time. Salvinia is represented by one, or possibly two, species. The megaspore of S. cerebrata has a characteristic surface sculpture of irregular, rounded ridges. Some specimens differ from the typical S. cerebrata by having strongly developed verrucae or clavae. They are described as Salvinia sp., but it is possible that they represent a variety of S. cerebrata. Azolla is represented by three species. A. nikitinii and A. ventricosa have nine floats in two tiers; massulae have not been found. A. tuganensis has three floats in one tier, massulae have anchor-shaped glochidia.  相似文献

An immense variety of fish may, on occasions, aggregate around or beassociated with floating structures such as drifting algae, jelliedzooplankton, whales, floats or anchored fish aggregating devices (ineffect, there are over 333 fish species belonging to 96 familiesrecorded in the literature).Several hypotheses have been advanced to explain this behaviour ofpelagic fish, although the most widely accepted theory is that fish usefloating materials, to some extent, to protect themselves frompredators. However, we think that aggregation under floats may be theresult of behaviour that has evolved to safeguard the survival of eggs, larvae and juvenile stages, during dispersion to other areas. Naturalfloating structures (e.g., algae, branches of trees) drift in seacurrents that originate in places where the floating objects arefrequently found (e.g., river estuaries, coastal areas). These same seacurrents also introduce some of the planktonic production generated inthese areas into the oligotrophic pelagic environment. Fish associatedwith drifting floating structures probably feed on invertebratesassociated with the structures. However, they may also benefit from theaccumulated plankton in the converging waters. Adult fish of somemigratory species (tuna, dolphinfish, etc.) have also developed similarassociative behaviour around drifting objects for other reasons (e.g.,resting places, presence of bait fish, geographical references andschool recomposition). In this context, the meeting point hypothesis isonly applicable to one specific case, the tuna and tuna-like species.Aggregative and associative behaviour, under and around floatingdevices, may be the result of convergent behaviors that result fromdifferent motivations. However, generally this behaviour can beexplained by the fact that drifting floating objects represent a meansof reaching relatively rich areas, where larvae and juvenile fish havean increased chance of survival.  相似文献

A new species of late Mid Devonian seed-megaspore from East Greenland is described and named as Spermasporites allenii . The formerly monotypic genus Spermasporites is emended to accommodate this new species. Rare specimens of S. allenii , with near complete sporangial contents, occur together with specimens showing proximally adhering microspores. These demonstrate that S. allenii was contained within a sporangium exhibiting extreme anisospory, which is interpreted here as functionally bisexual. This is a key element in understanding its reproductive function. The megaspore was shed along with some attached microspores giving it potential for both cross- and self-fertilization. This confers the advantages of heterospory without recourse to separate micro- and megasporangia. This provides a more likely mechanism for seed plant origin than the archaeopteridalean sporangium reduction model. Ultrastructural study of the megaspore wall confirms the progymnosperm affinity of S. allenii . Comparable forms include the Frasnian Spermasporites devonicus and the Famennian seed-megaspores isolated from Archaeosperma arnoldii .  相似文献

Peculiar associations of small, solitary, deep-water rugose corals are described from the Middle Devonian buildups situated in the easternmost part of Hamar Laghdad area of southern Morocco. The most of them are monospecific and consist of simplified taxon “Amplexusflorescens but one is polyspecific and composed of specimens belonging to four different species representing three families. These rugosan associations form isolated nest-like aggregations where numerous densely packed specimens are arranged mostly in life position. The polyspecific and two monospecific associations are interpreted as growing in close proximity to venting fields. They reveal a unique “calice-in-calice” recolonization pattern expressed by successive settlement of juvenile specimens in the calice of dead individuals. This pattern was presumably a consequence of selective survival of coral larvae settling in extreme vent habitats. Although, the “calice-in-calice” pattern is common in both, mono- and polyspecific associations, there are differences expressed in the character of larval attachments and various types of the calice fillings. The trophic interaction between corals and ostracods is discussed. Additionally, associations of “Amplexusflorescens, not displaying “calice-in-calice” pattern of growth have been found within the mound where polyspecific association occurs. These are interpreted as growing away from venting fields. Comparisons of Amplexus-type coral faunas with the other North African and European corals allow the classification of these ampleximorph rugosan taxa as characteristic biotic components of the Middle Devonian mound environments influenced by venting activity. Two new genera and species, Weyeraia prima and Vesiculolasma erfoudi, are introduced.  相似文献

Fossil Salviniaceae are described from the Claggett Shale and Judith River Formation, late Cretaceous (Campanian stage) of Montana. A new genus, Parazolla, from the Claggett Shale, has megaspores in which the swimming apparatus is composed of a number of elongate floats attached to the megaspore body and invested by coiled hairs. The floats separate at maturity. Massulae (bearing microspores) have simple hair-like glochidia, many of which are knobbed at their tips. Glochidia tend to resemble the perisporial hairs of the megaspore body. This resemblance provides fossil evidence of the homology of these two hair-like structures among living species of Azolla. In Azolla simplex from the Judith River Formation the megaspore has a single cap-like so-called columellate float. Massulae, which have anchor-shaped glochidia, are associated with these megaspores. A. simplex is the oldest species of Azolla and Parazolla the oldest member of the Salviniaceae so far found.  相似文献

Juveniles of the tube-dwelling polychaete L. conchilega were found attached to adult tubes at an exposed beach in South Wales (U.K.). They attached to the upper part of tubes protruding above the sediment. The aim of this study was to determine the timing of juvenile settlement on to adult tubes, their abundance and size distribution, and the time of detachment and densities in the sediment after re-settlement. Furthermore, to establish whether the sediment composition of juvenile tubes differed from those of adults and the surrounding sediment. In 1998, 1999 and 2000, tubes of adult L. conchilegawere sampled and numbers of attached juveniles were quantified and their sizes measured. Densities of solitary L. conchilega in the sediment were estimated, as well as the size distribution of solitary tubes. On average, 5–13 juveniles were attached to single adult tubes in spring, but numbers varied greatly with up to 72 juveniles on a single tube in April 1998. Availability of a hard substratum and chemical cues are discussed as potential factors triggering the attachment of juveniles to adult tubes. Juveniles started to detach and re-settle in the sediment 1 month after attachment. Once settled in the sediment, juvenile numbers decreased steeply, but the size distribution of solitary L. conchilega suggested that some juveniles survived in the population. However, the extent to which numbers of juvenile recruits contribute to the density of adults remained unclear. Juveniles used a smaller mean particle size for tube building than adults, but both actively selected particles.  相似文献

Bears in captivity often show abnormal behaviors such as stereotypies and periods of excessive inactivity. Most of the research aimed at reducing abnormal behaviors in bears has focused on feeding enrichment. However, the effects of feeding enrichment only seem to last as long as it takes a bear to consume the food. This study investigated the effects of inedible, manipulable objects on bears. Two polar bears (Ursus maritimus) received plastic floats. A sloth bear (Melursus ursinus) and a spectacled bear (Treniarctos ornatus) received plastic balls. During a 7-week period, polar bears nearly doubled their activity in the presence of toy floats, and the spectacled bear halved its pacing in the presence of toys. The sloth bear did not respond to the objects. These findings indicate that access to manipulable nonfood objects such as plastic toys can result in prolonged engagement in appetitive behaviors by polar bears.  相似文献

We studied the influence of additional visual objects on the recognition of test objects. Low-contrast letter-like images 1.1, 2.1, or 4.3 deg in size served as test objects. They were presented in the middle of the screen 30 ms after the presentation of additional objects. Digits 1 to 9 with a size of 1.3 deg served as additional objects; they appeared at various distances from the center of the screen. The observer’s task was to identify simultaneously the test objects and the digits. Recognition of the test objects deteriorated in the case of the nearest separation to additional objects (the crowding effect). With an increase of the distance of the digits from the center of the screen, deterioration of their recognitions was the most pronounced when the test objects were the largest. We assume that lateral masking and attention are the factors contributing to the crowding effect.  相似文献

All of the roots of Selaginella selaginoides are attached laterally to the base of the shoot, which has monopolar growth as is characteristic of Selaginella. The first three roots are produced by meristematic activity in the cortex of the hypocotyl as in several other species of Selaginella. The fourth root is produced in the same way as the first three, except that not all of the cortical cells which become meristematic mature into root tissue. Some of the meristematic tissue remains undifferentiated and continues to produce additional roots. Potentially an unlimited number of roots could be produced, but no plant was found to have more than eight. There is some secondary growth in the cortex of the basal swelling on the hypocotyl, but no secondary vascular tissue is produced and no cambium of any sort is ever organized. On the basis of comparisons with other living species of Selaginella. the centralized root system of S. selaginoides is interpreted as having been modified from a noncentralized type of root system by the persistence of the juvenile mode of root production.  相似文献

Aerococcus viridans in the Hospital Environment   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3       下载免费PDF全文
Aerococcus viridans has been described as an airborne organism prevalent in occupied rooms. It has also been described as an organism having many characteristics that might cause it to be confused with streptococci or staphylococci, and this may account for the fact that the presence of A. viridans has not been reported in the hospital environment or in clinical specimens. Swab specimens were taken from 47 objects in 11 different areas in a local hospital, cultured overnight in Trypticase Soy Broth, and streaked on blood-agar and on a selective serum agar containing potassium tellurite and crystal violet. Of 85 alpha-hemolytic cultures isolated, 11 proved to be typical A. viridans based on diagnostic tests that also were applied to a collection of gram-positive cocci, including authentic strains of A. viridans. These organisms are gram-positive cocci with a strong tendency toward tetrad formation in broth cultures. They are predominantly aerobic, have a very weak catalase activity, and lack porphyrin respiratory enzymes. Three similar cultures also were obtained from routine clinical specimens.  相似文献

In the present paper, we describe and figure some rare lower Aptian (Lower Cretaceous) helical ammonoids from the Deshayesites deshayesi Zone of the Argiles à Plicatules Formation (Paris Basin, NE France). Those are the only helical ammonoids known in this zone so far. They were only occasionally evoked in literature and this is probably on the basis of the specimens here described that, according to us, the genus Toxoceratoides (Helicancylidae) was wrongly regarded as possessing an early helical spiral part. We demonstrate here that these specimens are not belonging to Toxoceratoides nor Helicancylidae: they are interpreted as ‘abnormally’ helical representatives of the genus Ancyloceras (Ancyloceratidae) or a new taxon of Ancyloceratidae.  相似文献

This report is based on nine specimens of fossil conifer stems and leaves from the Early Oligocene Jansen Creek Member of the Makah Formation. They were collected along the northern shore of the Olympic Peninsula of Washington. The fossils are preserved as siliceous permineralizations and were exposed in surface view along rock fractures. Details of leaf morphology and epidermal construction appear on fracture surfaces of certain specimens while the cellular construction of the leaves and twigs is visible in thin sections. Leaves are dorsiventrally flattened, attached to twigs that contain up to four growth increments of secondary xylem, up to 2.3 cm long, 3.5 mm wide, and have parallel margins with minute teeth. The leaves are about 0.5 mm thick and have a central vascular strand surrounded by transfusion tissue. A large resin canal occurs abaxial to the vascular strand, and generally two additional resin canals occur in the mesophyll near each leaf margin. Leaves are mostly hypostomatic, with sunken stomata in two longitudinal bands, one to each side of the midline of the leaf and each containing eight to 13 longitudinal rows of stomata. Several unusual anatomical features in the stems also occur in the peduncle and cone axis of seed cones described as Cunninghamiostrobus goedertii, which occurs at the same locality. Thus, the leafy twigs belong to the same species as produced the cones. The cones, leaves, and shoots of this Tertiary conifer are similar to those of modern Cunninghamia but differ from the living species in several respects.  相似文献

We have carried out an electronmicroscopic study of replicas of the underside of culture cells. The techniques developed for the preparation of such replicas are described in detail. We find that the cells do not rest on the surface of the culture dish itself, but rather are attached to a protein film adsorbed from the culture medium. The underside of cells is usually rather smooth looking. It is difficult to clearly define the site of attachment of cells to their substrate. The features interpreted as attachment sites are often bored and diffuse. Heavy bundles of micro-filaments can be recognized in the sole plate of BHK cells. These bundles are usually parallel to the long axes of the cells, and often terminate in cell projections. They are only rarely encountered in the sole plate of transformed BHK cells.  相似文献

Lyssoxylon grigsbyi Daugherty, a petrified stem with petiole bases, was originally described from the Upper Triassic Chinle Formation of Arizona and considered to be a member of the Williamsoniaceae. Investigation of additional material from a similar horizon in New Mexico, together with re-examination of preparations of the holotype, suggest that the plant, with its monoxylic stele, girdling leaf traces, and bicelled epidermal hairs is a true cycad. Cells of the New Mexico specimens contain structures interpreted as preserved nuclei.  相似文献

Summary The coronet cells in the saccus vasculosus of Etmopterus spinax L. were investigated histologically and histochemically. Inclusions of granula in the coronet cells were observed in 8 specimens. The granules react positivly as lipid and protein containing substances. They are attached to the Einschlußkörper in the cell base and accumulate around the nuclei or in the inner fibre apparatus of the cell apex. The diameter of the granules reaches 2,5 in the cell base and diminishes to less than 1 in the apical structures. These granula are interpreted as a sign of secretion into the third ventricle. This secretory activity is high in gravid females (31,4–54,7 % of the cells) and low in juvenile females or specimens in which no ovulation could be stated (0–4,7 %). Gravid females show differences in the distribution pattern of the granula within the cells, thus indicating a phasic activity. The coronet cells in the saccus vasculosus of Etmopterus seem to be involved in the secretory phenomena related to gravidity.

The ultrastructure of the Late Cretaceous (Santonian–?early Campanian) megaspore Glomerisporites pupus and its associated microspores has been examined in an attempt to resolve a number of problems concerning the interpretation of their morphology. The new observations presented are based on an analysis of entire, fragmentary, and thin-sectioned specimens under scanning and transmission electron microscopes. These add to, and partly correct, previous observations on this taxon. They include the following: (1) The exine of the megaspore consists of thin, homogeneous, outer undulating and inner electron dense layers, with a thicker zone of spongy structure in-between. (2) The perispore (or perine) of the megaspore comprises four layers, in order towards the exterior: loose filamentous, dense filamentous, vacuolate, and columnar. (3) This is completely enclosed by a thick mat of hairs, which appears to be attached to the underlying perisporal layers by means of connections with a few of the “spines” that originate from the dense filamentous zone, and with some elements of the columnar perine. (4) The tripartite neck (acrolamella) of the spore, which is hidden beneath the mat of hairs, is predominantly an extension of the dense filamentous and vacuolate layers, but also involves the columnar layer, especially in the lower part. (5) Some of the numerous small floats that are embedded in the mat have hairs originating from them. (6) Both long tangled and circinate hairs surround the perispore of the microspores. (7) The exine of the microspore was at least partly attached to the perispore when the organ was viable. (8) It comprises four zones that vary in structure and electron density. These facts and comparisons made with other megaspores and their associated microspores confirm evolutionary links between G. pupus and several taxa included within the Salviniaceae (Azolla, Parazolla, Salvinia) and possible ancestors of this group (the parent plants of Ariadnaesporites and Capulisporites).  相似文献
