Three professional divers have performed a dive to 450 msw. From 200 msw and during the first 64 h on the bottom, they breathed a H2-He-O2 mixture with 54-56% H2. At this time a switch was performed to a mixture with 30% H2, and 8 h later a second switch was performed to 0% H2. In the H2-He-O2 mixture the clinical symptoms of high-pressure nervous syndrome (HPNS) were not present and the electroencephalogram changes were slight. The switch of the mixture induced an isobaric HPNS of high intensity. Twenty-four hours later the HPNS decreased, but the clinical symptoms persisted throughout the stay in the He-O2 mixture. The appearance of isobaric HPNS during the switch might be due to the disappearance of the narcotic substance which suppressed or masked the clinical symptoms; it might also be due to the sudden increase in the partial pressure of He, which was equivalent to a fast compression.  相似文献

Two series of experiments were carried out on humans to study the effects of fast and slow exponential compression curves with N2 additions. Eight subjects in the first series and 13 subjects in the second series were analyzed up to the depths of 400-450 m of seawater (msw). The data indicated that injections of N2 in He-O2 mixture reduced or suppressed the hyperbaric tremor in the two series. Electroencephalographic (EEG) changes were recorded with the two types of compression, but these changes (increase in slow waves, decrease in alpha-activity, appearance of microsleep EEG traces) were more important with the fast exponential compression curves between 200 and 300 msw than with the slow exponential curves. The effects of the fast rates of compression on EEG activities were not compensated by addition of 4-5% N2. Consequently, the fast exponential compression curves, even with N2 injections, cannot be used without risk and must be avoided; the slow exponential compression curve with N2 injection allowed a human subject to reach 450 msw in satisfactory condition, i.e., without tremor and with light EEG changes.  相似文献

To estimate muscle fiber conduction velocity (MFCV), the normalized peak-averaging technique was developed along with complementary software and reported in a previous study. Electromyograms were recorded from the vicinity of end-plate zones (EMG data 1) and a site farther from the end-plates and distal tendons (EMG data 2) of biceps brachii muscles using surface array electrodes during 50% maximal voluntary isometric contractions in ten healthy volunteers. The MFCV values obtained with normalized peak-averaging technique were compared to those obtained with the cross-correlation technique and examined by computer simulation of the MFCV distribution. The MFCV values obtained with normalized peak-averaging technique highly correlated with those obtained with cross-correlation technique in both EMG data 1 and EMG data 2. It was also confirmed that MFCV values obtained from EMG data 1 were distributed much more widely than those obtained from EMG data 2. These results show the clinical usefulness of normalized peak-averaging technique for the detailed assessment of MFCV.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to investigate the correlation between myosin heavy chain (MHC) composition, lactate threshold (LT), maximal oxygen uptake VO2max, and average muscle fiber conduction velocity (MFCV) measured from surface electromyographic (EMG) signals during cycling exercise. Ten healthy male subjects participated in the study. MHC isoforms were identified from a sample of the vastus lateralis muscle and characterized as type I, IIA, and IIX. At least three days after a measure of LT and VO2max, the subjects performed a 2-min cycling exercise at 90 revolutions per minute and power output corresponding to LT, during which surface EMG signals were recorded from the vastus lateralis muscle with an adhesive electrode array. MFCV and instantaneous mean power spectral frequency of the surface EMG were estimated at the maximal instantaneous knee angular speed. Output power corresponding to LT and VO2max were correlated with percentage of MHC I (R2=0.77; and 0.42, respectively; P<0.05). MFCV was positively correlated with percentage of MHC I, power corresponding to LT and to VO2max (R2=0.84; 0.74; 0.53, respectively; P<0.05). Instantaneous mean power spectral frequency was not correlated with any of these variables or with MFCV, thus questioning the use of surface EMG spectral analysis for indirect estimation of MFCV in dynamic contractions.  相似文献

The objective was to investigate muscle fatigue measuring changes in force output and force tremor and electromyographic activity (EMG) during two sustained maximal isometric contractions for 60s: (1) concurrent hand grip and elbow flexion (HG and EF); or (2) hand grip and elbow extension (HG and EE). Each force tremor amplitude was decomposed into four frequency bands (1-3, 4-10, 11-20, and 21-50Hz). Surface EMGs were recorded from the flexor digitorum superficialis (FDS), extensor digitorum (ED), biceps brachii (BB) and lateral head of triceps brachii (TB). The HG and EF forces for the HG and EF and the HG force for the HG and EE declined rapidly, whereas the EE force remained almost constant near to the initial value for the first 40s and then declined. The decrease in EMG amplitude was observed not for the FDS muscle but for the ED muscle. The HG tremor amplitude for each frequency band showed similar decreasing rate, whereas the decreases in EF and EE tremor amplitudes for the lower band (below 10Hz) were slower than those for the higher band (above 11Hz). The neuromuscular mechanisms underlying muscle fatigue during sustained maximal concurrent contractions of hand grip and elbow flexion or extension are discussed.  相似文献

Muscle atonia is a feature of normal rapid-eye-movement sleep (REMS). The suppression of accessory respiratory muscle activity has been investigated and a role for sleep-disordered breathing hypothesized, but the suppression of diaphragmatic activity has rarely been considered. We hypothesized that the activity of the diaphragm was suppressed by an area of the dorsolateral pons during REMS. Lesions in this region have previously been shown to abolish the atonia of REMS. The diaphragmatic electromyogram (EMG) activity was analyzed in five naturally sleeping cats before and after pontine lesions leading to REMS without atonia. Although respiratory timing parameters were not altered by the lesion, the inspiratory rate of rise was significantly increased in all cats, and the brief pauses (40-100 ms) in the diaphragmatic EMG normally seen in REMS were virtually abolished. We conclude that the dorsolateral pons has a role in suppressing diaphragmatic activation during REMS. This suppression affects the average rate of rise of diaphragmatic activity and also leads to brief intermittent complete cessation of ongoing muscle activity. These decrements in diaphragm activity could jeopardize ventilation during REMS.  相似文献

The relationship between diaphragm electromyogram (EMG), isometric force, and length was studied in the canine diaphragm strip with intact blood supply and innervation under three conditions: supramaximal tetanic (100 Hz) phrenic nerve stimulation (STPS; n = 12), supramaximal phrenic stimulation at 25 Hz (n = 15), and submaximal phrenic stimulation at 25 Hz (n = 5). In the same preparation, the EMG-length relationship was also examined with direct muscle stimulation when the neuromuscular junction was blocked. EMG from three different sites and via two types of electrodes (direct or sewn-in and surface) were recorded during isometric contraction at different lengths. Direct EMGs were recorded from two bipolar electrodes sutured into the strip, one near its central end and the other near its costal end. A third EMG electrode configuration summed potentials from the whole strip by recording potentials between central and costal sites. Surface EMGs were recorded by a bipolar spring clip electrode that made contact with upper and lower surfaces of the muscle strip with light pressure. In all conditions of stimulation with different types of electrodes, all EMGs decreased significantly (P less than 0.05) when muscle length was changed from 50 to 120% of resting length (L0). Minimal and maximal force outputs were observed at 50 and 120% of L0, respectively, in all experiments. The results of this study indicated that the muscle length is a significant variable that affects the EMG recording and that the diaphragmatic EMG may not be an accurate reflection of phrenic nerve activity.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Cardiac output and organ blood flow to major organs were investigated in awake rats at 1 atmosphere absolute (ATA) air and at 71 ATA He-O2. Radioactively labeled microspheres [15 +/- 1 (SD) micron] were injected into the left ventricle during constant-rate arterial blood sampling at 1 ATA air and subsequently at 71 ATA He-O2. Intra-arterial blood pressure was continuously recorded. The partial pressure of O2 was kept between 0.4 and 0.6 ATA. The results indicate that the mean blood pressure, heart rate, cardiac output, and organ blood flow are essentially unaltered in the rat at 71 ATA except for increased blood flow to the liver (122%, P less than 0.05), whereas the blood flow to the adrenals, the diaphragm, and the leg muscle fell (P less than 0.05).  相似文献

Two series of experiments were performed to examine the relationship between force and change in average muscle fibre conduction velocity (MFCV) during local muscle fatigue. The average MFCV was estimated using the cross-correlation method. In the first experiment this relationship was studied with surface EMG of vastus lateralis at force levels from 10 to 100% of maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) with and without occluded circulation. The product of relative force and time was held constant. At 10-20% MVC, MFCV increased slightly under the 2 conditions. Between 30-40% MVC, MFCV decreased, this decline in conduction velocity being significantly greater with occluded circulation. Above 40% MVC the decline in MFCV was larger at higher forces, but without any differences between the ischaemic and non-ischaemic conditions. In the second experiment the relationship between change in force and MFCV was studied during sustained maximal voluntary contractions of biceps brachii. MFCV declined during the first 26-39 s of the contraction, followed by an increase. Since this increase occurred when the force had dropped to 30-50% of the initial maximal force, a partial restoration of blood flow is thought to be responsible for this phenomenon. Because an increase in MFCV was noted, despite a further decline in force, this implies that at high force levels the change in MFCV during fatigue could partly be caused by mechanisms different from those accounting for the force loss. It is concluded that above 40% MVC intramuscular pressure is sufficiently high to cause ischaemia, and MFCV is found to be very sensitive to changes in intramuscular blood flow.  相似文献

The enzyme activities associated with chain elongation and desaturation of fatty acid in hepatic microsomes from rats held at 1 ATA of air, 1 ATA of He-O2, and 20 ATA of He-O2 were studied. It was found that both the microsomal chain elongation and desaturation of fatty acids were depressed in rats held at 1 ATA of He-O2 as compared to animals held at 1 ATA of air. When animals were exposed to an environment of 20 ATA of He-O2, the chain elongation of fatty acid was about the same as for rats held at 1 ATA of air and was two times greater than for the rats held at 1 ATA of He-O2. The desaturase activity was depressed as compared to the two groups of control animals held at 1 ATA of air and 1 ATA of He-O2.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the neuromuscular adaptation that occurred with aging, by comparing young and aged subjects with respect to changes in surface EMG from the tibialis anterior muscle during fatiguing contractions. EMG variables such as the averaged rectified value (ARV), median frequency (MDF), and muscle fiber conduction velocity (MFCV) were calculated during maximal (MVC, 3 sec) and submaximal (60% MVC, 60 sec) isometric contractions. Muscular force, ARV, MDF, and MFCV during MVC were significantly greater in the young than in the elderly (p < 0.05). EMG amplitude increased and the waveform slowed in all subjects during submaximal contractions, indicating the development of local muscle fatigue. As fatigue progressed, the ARV increased and the MDF and MFCV decreased significantly (p < 0.01). The fatigue-induced changes in the MDF and MFCV were significantly smaller in aged than in young subjects (p < 0.05), a trend also seen in the ARV change, which means that the elderly cannot be fatigued as much as the young with contractions of the same relative intensity. These results as a whole suggest that the aged subjects hold an adaptive motor strategy to cope with age-related neuromuscular deteriorations, due to the decline of motor unit activation and selective atrophy of fast twitch muscle fibers.  相似文献

We assessed the effects of cooling the ventral medullary surface (VMS) on the activity of chest wall and abdominal expiratory muscles in eight anesthetized artificially ventilated dogs after vagotomy and denervation of the carotid sinus nerves. Electromyograms (EMGs) of the triangularis sterni, internal intercostal, abdominal external oblique, abdominal internal oblique, and transversus abdominis muscles were measured with EMG of the diaphragm as an index of inspiratory activity. Bilateral localized cooling (2 x 2 mm) in the thermosensitive intermediate part of the VMS produced temperature-dependent reduction in the EMG of diaphragm and abdominal muscles. The rib cage expiratory EMGs were little affected at 25 degrees C; their amplitudes decreased at lower VMS temperatures (less than 20 degrees C) but by significantly fewer degrees than the diaphragmatic and abdominal expiratory EMGs at a constant VMS temperature. With moderate to severe cooling (less than 20 degrees C) diaphragmatic EMG disappeared, but rib cage expiratory EMGs became tonic and resumed a phasic pattern shortly before the recovery of diaphragmatic EMG during rewarming of the VMS. These results indicate that the effects of cooling the VMS differ between the activity of rib cage and abdominal expiratory muscles. This variability may be due to inhomogeneous inputs from the VMS to expiratory motoneurons or to a different responsiveness of various expiratory motoneurons to the same input either from the VMS or the inspiratory neurons.  相似文献

The present work aimed at investigating the effects of mechanically amplified tremor on cortico-muscular coherence (CMC) in the alpha band. The study of CMC in this specific band is of particular interest because this coherence is usually absent in healthy individuals and it is an aberrant feature in patients affected by pathological tremors; understanding its mechanisms is therefore important. Thirteen healthy volunteers (23±4 years) performed elbow flexor sustained contractions both against a spring load and in isometric conditions at 20% of maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVC). Spring stiffness was selected to induce instability in the stretch reflex servo loop. 64 EEG channels, surface EMG from the biceps brachii muscle and force were simultaneously recorded. Contractions against the spring resulted in greater fluctuations of the force signal and EMG amplitude compared to isometric conditions (p<.05). During isometric contractions CMC was systematically found in the beta band and sporadically observed in the alpha band. However, during the contractions against the spring load, CMC in the alpha band was observed in 12 out of 13 volunteers. Partial directed coherence (PDC) revealed an increased information flow in the EMG to EEG direction in the alpha band (p<.05). Therefore, coherence in the alpha band between the sensory-motor cortex and the biceps brachii muscle can be systematically induced in healthy individuals by mechanically amplifying tremor. The increased information flow in the EMG to EEG direction may reflect enhanced afferent activity from the muscle spindles. These results may contribute to the understanding of the presence of alpha band CMC in tremor related pathologies by suggesting that the origin of this phenomenon may not only be at cortical level but may also be affected by spinal circuit loops.  相似文献

Changes in the median frequency of the power spectrum of the surface electromyogram (EMG) are commonly used to detect muscle fatigue. Previous research has indicated that changes in the median frequency are related to decreases in muscle fibre conduction velocity (MFCV) during sustained fatiguing contractions. However, in experimental studies the median frequency has been consistently observed to decrease by a relatively greater amount than MFCV. In this paper, a new estimate of EMG frequency compression, the Spectral Compression Estimate (SCE), is compared with the median frequency of the EMG power spectrum, the median frequency of the EMG amplitude spectrum and MFCV measured during sustained, isometric, fatiguing contractions of the brachioradialis muscle at 30, 50 and 80% maximum voluntary contraction (MVC). The SCE is found to provide a better estimate of the observed changes in MFCV than the median frequency of either the EMG power spectrum or EMG amplitude spectrum.  相似文献

Under hyperbaric conditions (11 ata) obtained with normoxic O2-N2 mixtures spontaneous EMG activity disappears, as do reactions to noise, but this phenomenon is reversible after the substitution of Helium for Nitrogen in the mixture. Analysis of EMG responses to sciatic nerve excitation has revealed no difference between the EMG tracings recorded under normobaric pressure and those obtained under hyperbaric conditions (O2-N2 or O2-He, 11 ata), and hyperbaric conditions do not seem to interfere with neuro-muscular synaptic transmission. Furthermore, the effect of Pavulon (an antidepolarising, acetyl-cholino-competitive curare-mimetic drug) is similar under normal and hyperbaric conditions: hyperbaria change neither the onset of neuro-muscular blockage nor its intensity or duration. The absence of a specific effect on synapse function of a change in the diluting gas from nitrogen to helium suggests that there was no change in post-synaptic receptor function. This result is not in accordance with the hypothesis that inert gas pressures of less than 10 ata modify molecular structures particularly at the neuro-muscular synapse level.  相似文献

We investigated the effect of different levels of O2 tension (hypoxia, normoxia, and hyperoxia) on the breath-by-breath onset and peak electromyographic (EMG) activity of the genioglossus (GG) muscle during a five-breath end-expiratory tracheal occlusion of 20- to 30-s duration. GG and diaphragmatic (DIA) EMG activity were measured with needle electrodes in eight anesthetized tracheotomized adult cats. In response to occlusion, the increase in the number of animals with GG EMG activity was different during hypoxia, normoxia, and hyperoxia (P = 0.003, Friedman). During hypoxia, eight of eight of the animals had GG EMG activity by the third occluded effort. In contrast, during normoxia, only four of eight and, during hyperoxia, only three of eight animals had GG EMG activity throughout the entire five-breath occlusion. Similarly, at release of the occlusion, more animals had persistent GG EMG activity on the postocclusion breaths during hypoxia than during normoxia or hyperoxia. Breath-by-breath augmentation of peak amplitude of the GG and DIA EMGs on each occluded effort was accentuated during hypoxia (P less than 0.01) and abolished during hyperoxia (P = 0.10). These results suggest that hypoxemia is a major determinant of the rapidity of onset, magnitude, and sustained activity of upper airway muscles during airway occlusion.  相似文献

Nucleotides concentrations (ATP, ADP, AMP) have been measured in brain and muscle of eels exposed to 101 ATA of hydrostatic pressure (HP) for 3 hr. Survival times (ST) and oxygen arterial content (CaO2) have been measured in trouts exposed to HP = 101 ATA. The results show that at HP = 101 ATA, AMP increases (P less than 0.05) and ATP decreases (-12%; NS) in muscle but are not modified in brain; ST values are similar in normoxic and hyperoxic conditions, and CaO2 are similar at 1 ATA and 101 ATA of HP. It is concluded that HP tends to decrease aerobic production of energy. This phenomenon is not due to a failure in O2 transport from ambient medium to the cell but to a possible perturbation of the aerobic cellular processes leading to energy production (Krebs cycle and/or respiratory chain coupled to oxidative phosphorylation.  相似文献

Exposure to high hydrostatic pressure produces neurological changes referred to as the high-pressure nervous syndrome (HPNS). Manifestations of HPNS include tremor, EEG changes, and convulsions. These symptoms suggest an alteration in synaptic transmission, particularly with inhibitory neural pathways. Because spinal cord transmission has been implicated in HPNS, this study investigated inhibitory neurotransmitter function in the cord at high pressure. Guinea pig spinal cord synaptosome preparations were used to study the effect of compression to 67.7 atmospheres absolute on [3H]glycine and [3H]gamma-aminobutyric acid ([3H]GABA) release. Pressure was found to exert a significant suppressive effect on the depolarization-induced calcium-dependent release of glycine and GABA by these spinal cord presynaptic nerve terminals. This study suggests that decreased tonic inhibitory regulation at the level of the spinal cord contributes to the hyperexcitability observed in animals with compression to high pressure.  相似文献

High hydrostatic pressure has been shown to produce neurological changes in humans which manifest, in part, as tremor, myoclonic jerks, electroencephalographic changes, and convulsions. This clinical pattern has been termed high-pressure nervous syndrome (HPNS). These symptoms may represent an alteration in synaptic transmission in the central nervous system with the inhibitory neural pathways being affected in particular. Since gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) transmission has been implicated in other seizure disorders, it was of interest to study GABAergic function at high pressure. Isolated synaptosomes were used to follow GABA release at 67.7 ATA of pressure. The major observation was a 33% depression in total [3H]GABA efflux from depolarized cerebrocortical synaptosomes at 67.7 ATA. The Ca2+-dependent component of release was found to be completely blocked during the 1st min of [3H]GABA efflux with a slow rise over the subsequent 3 min. These findings lead us to conclude that high pressure interferes with the intraterminal cascade for Ca2+-dependent release of GABA.  相似文献

The relationship between muscle fibre conduction velocity (MFCV) and the power spectrum of surface EMGs in 3 human volunteers was studied during isometric contractions at 40% maximum voluntary contraction. In addition, the recovery of these two parameters was measured during short lasting contractions at the same force level every 30 s. The recovery phase was also studied during ischaemia, thereby preventing the recovery of MFCV. The mean MFCV was calculated by the cross-correlation method. The measurements were facilitated by a real-time estimation of the cross-correlation and the MFCV and by a graphic display of the digitised signal. During contraction a nearly linear relation was found between MFCV and the median frequency of the power spectrum (MPF). During recovery this relationship was lost in one subject: MPF restored much faster then MFCV. During recovery under ischemia MFCV did not recover, but MPF recovered partially in all subjects. It is concluded that the shift of the power spectrum to lower frequencies during fatigue cannot be explained by changes in MFCV alone. Central mechanisms also influence the power spectrum and studying the recovery of local muscle fatigue during ischemia may separate these influences from that of MFCV on the power spectrum during fatigue.  相似文献
