Taking into account that marriage, the family as a social unit, and concepts of legitimacy developed to ensure the devolution of property and that, when these concepts apply in a society based on hierarchically organized monarchies, they also involve the devolution of power, this essay furnishes examples of dislocations in such devolutions, in terms of familiar incidents in western European history. That Jane Seymour died in childbirth but her son Edward VI survived long enough to ensure the stability of the Church of England is the first example. The infertility of Mary Tudor, when married to Philip II of Spain, prevented the formation of an Anglo-Spanish dynasty that would have been Roman Catholic is the second example of such a dislocation. Likewise, the infertility of Charles II's wife, Catherine of Braganza, led to the succession of James II, a practicing Roman Catholic, whose attempts to undermine the Church of England led to the Glorious Revolution of 1788 and the preservation of English Protestantism. Another example is the death in 1817 of Princess Charlotte, in childbirth, which led to the scramble of George III's aging sons to marry and beget an heir to the throne. The only success led to the birth of the future Queen Victoria, whose dynastic competence remains unquestionable, but who herself had some passing involvement with obstetrical developments. Finally, the delivery of Kaiser Wilhelm II, who sustained a brachial plexus injury that produced Erb's palsy of the left arm, is considered, and the question of intrapartum fetal hypoxia is raised as a hypothesis, in addition to the mechanical trauma and its effect on his personality.  相似文献

Biometric evidence that sexual selection has shaped the hominin face   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
We consider sex differences in human facial morphology in the context of developmental change. We show that at puberty, the height of the upper face, between the lip and the brow, develops differently in males and females, and that these differences are not explicable in terms of sex differences in body size. We find the same dimorphism in the faces of human ancestors. We propose that the relative shortening in men and lengthening in women of the anterior upper face at puberty is the mechanistic consequence of extreme maxillary rotation during ontogeny. A link between this developmental model and sexual dimorphism is made for the first time, and provides a new set of morphological criteria to sex human crania. This finding has important implications for the role of sexual selection in the evolution of anthropoid faces and for theories of human facial attractiveness.  相似文献

Although it is rarely considered so in modern developmental biology, morphogenesis is fundamentally a biomechanical process, and this is especially true of one of the first major morphogenic transformations in development, gastrulation. Cells bring about changes in embryonic form by generating patterned forces and by differentiating the tissue mechanical properties that harness these forces in specific ways. Therefore, biomechanics lies at the core of connecting the genetic and molecular basis of cell activities to the macroscopic tissue deformations that shape the embryo. Here we discuss what is known of the biomechanics of gastrulation, primarily in amphibians but also comparing similar morphogenic processes in teleost fish and amniotes, and selected events in several species invertebrates. Our goal is to review what is known and identify problems for further research.  相似文献

As protein aggregation is potentially lethal, control of protein conformation by molecular chaperones is essential for cellular organisms. This is especially important during protein expression and translocation, since proteins are then unfolded and therefore most susceptible to form non-native interactions. Using TANGO, a statistical mechanics algorithm to predict protein aggregation, we here analyse the aggregation propensities of 28 complete proteomes. Our results show that between 10% and 20% of the residues in these proteomes are within aggregating protein segments and that this represents a lower limit for the aggregation tendency of globular proteins. Further, we show that not only evolution strongly pressurizes aggregation downwards by minimizing the amount of strongly aggregating sequences but also by selectively capping strongly aggregating hydrophobic protein sequences with arginine, lysine and proline. These residues are strongly favoured at these positions as they function as gatekeepers that are most efficient at opposing aggregation. Finally, we demonstrate that the substrate specificity of different unrelated chaperone families is geared by these gatekeepers. Chaperones face the difficulty of having to combine substrate affinity for a broad range of hydrophobic sequences and selectivity for those hydrophobic sequences that aggregate most strongly. We show that chaperones achieve these requirements by preferentially binding hydrophobic sequences that are capped by positively charged gatekeeper residues. In other words, targeting evolutionarily selected gatekeepers allows chaperones to prioritize substrate recognition according to aggregation propensity.  相似文献

Genome sequencing has revealed that horizontal gene transfer (HGT) is a major evolutionary process in bacteria. Although it is generally assumed that closely related organisms engage in genetic exchange more frequently than distantly related ones, the frequency of HGT among distantly related organisms and the effect of ecological relatedness on the frequency has not been rigorously assessed. Here, we devised a novel bioinformatic pipeline, which minimized the effect of over-representation of specific taxa in the available databases and other limitations of homology-based approaches by analyzing genomes in standardized triplets, to quantify gene exchange between bacterial genomes representing different phyla. Our analysis revealed the existence of networks of genetic exchange between organisms with overlapping ecological niches, with mesophilic anaerobic organisms showing the highest frequency of exchange and engaging in HGT twice as frequently as their aerobic counterparts. Examination of individual cases suggested that inter-phylum HGT is more pronounced than previously thought, affecting up to ∼16% of the total genes and ∼35% of the metabolic genes in some genomes (conservative estimation). In contrast, ribosomal and other universal protein-coding genes were subjected to HGT at least 150 times less frequently than genes encoding the most promiscuous metabolic functions (for example, various dehydrogenases and ABC transport systems), suggesting that the species tree based on the former genes may be reliable. These results indicated that the metabolic diversity of microbial communities within most habitats has been largely assembled from preexisting genetic diversity through HGT and that HGT accounts for the functional redundancy among phyla.  相似文献

Genomics influences multiple areas of microbiology, and thus affects key microbiological concepts. Recent reports that describe the large genome and unusual coding capacity of mimivirus, the minimized fungal genomes that contain elements of bacterial metabolism, and the 'signature' eukaryotic proteins in bacteria are introducing grey shades into the black-and-white distinctions between microbial domains. The concept of the 'universal' minimal genome is being challenged, and the ability of minimal genomes to support cellular complexity is under investigation. There have been intriguing insights into microbe-microbe relationships, for example conflict mediation in competing bacteriophages that rapidly evolve survival mechanisms when cooperation is experimentally enforced. Genomics has given birth to metagenomics, but has also stimulated the development of improved cultivation techniques. Lastly, the taxonomic potential of genomics is emerging, as studies of multiple strains allow us to revise and refine the bacterial species concept as well as the idea of a static genome.  相似文献

1. With the development of techniques of gene transfer, human genetic defects such as sickle cell anaemia, phenylketonurea, cystic fibrosis, haemophilia, Huntington's chorea, etc. will be eliminated. Ninety nine percent of humans in the year 2500 will be much the same as at present, but healthier. 2. Studies of Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology show that many strategies have been developed in the Animal Kingdom that could be advantageous in furthering human survival. Some of these strategies are discussed in the present article. 3. Commensal algae that will live in the epidermis of domestic animals (pigs, goats, cattle) will be developed enabling these animals to live in dry environments with minimal demands for food and water. Once successful in domestic animals, the algae could be adapted to live in some humans, i.e. the "Green Man". 4. Commensal protozoa and bacteria that digest cellulose and lignin will be developed so that they can live in the human gut and convert the material to sugars, volatile fatty acids and amino acids that can be absorbed and metabolized by Man, thus making many inexpensive vegetable food resources available. 5. Mammalian embryos will be able to develop through to full term in vitro in a cleidoic egg; and the in vitro fertilized egg will have to depend on finding a surrogate mother. 6. Some people will have an altered pattern of sexual activity. Many patterns will be available; one suggested here is of protogynous hermaphroditism, i.e. the individuals would be female for the first 30 years of life and male for the remaining years.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The present study was undertaken to examine the nature of the inhibitory action of glycerol on the liver microsomal monooxygenase system. In agreement with earlier observations, glycerol inhibited benzphetamine N-demethylation by liver microsomes of the phenobarbital-treated rabbit. The presence of glycerol in the medium did not affect binding of the substrate to cytochrome P450. Another polyol, ethylene glycol, was equally efficient in inhibiting benzphetamine N-demethylation. Both also inhibited reduction of rabbit cytochrome P450 LM2, cytochrome c and potassium ferricyanide by NADPH-cytochrome-P450 reductase in microsomes. Recently, we showed that the stimulation of electron transfer by increased ionic strength is due to neutralization of electrostatic interaction between NADPH-cytochrome-P450 reductase and its charged redox partners [Voznesensky, A. I. & Schenkman, J. B. (1992) J. Biol. Chem. 267, 14669-14676]. Polyols have an opposite effect to that of salt on ionic properties of a solution. They decrease the dielectric constant, thereby promoting electrostatic interactions between proteins. Addition of polyols decreased the conductivity of the medium. When rates of electron transfer to charged acceptors, cytochrome P450, cytochrome c and potassium ferricyanide, at various salt and polyol concentrations, relative to activities in 200 mM sodium phosphate, were plotted as a function of the conductivity the data for each acceptor fit on the same line. In contrast, neither alteration of ionic strength nor polyol addition affected the rate of electron transfer from NADPH-cytochrome-P450 reductase to an uncharged acceptor 1,4-benzoquinone. The data obtained is consistent with our earlier suggestion that charge repulsion limits redox interactions between rabbit cytochrome P450 LM2 and its reductase at low ionic strength, and suggest that the observed action of polyols is the result of enhancement of electrostatic interactions that inhibits electron transfer between NADPH-cytochrome-P450 reductase and its charged redox partners. In congruence with the hypothesis, the Km of rabbit cytochrome P450 LM2 for NADPH-cytochrome-P450 reductase was increased almost one order of magnitude by elevating the glycerol content from 5% to 25% (by vol.) without a change in Vmax.  相似文献

To infer the role of natural selection in shaping standing genetic diversity, it is necessary to assess the genomewide impact of demographic history on nucleotide diversity. In this study we analyzed sequence diversity of 16 nuclear loci in eight Pinus sylvestris populations. Populations were divided into four geographical groups on the basis of their current location and the geographical history of the region: northern Europe, central Europe, Spain, and Turkey. There were no among-group differences in the level of silent nucleotide diversity, which was approximately 0.005/bp in all groups. There was some evidence that linkage disequilibrium extended further in northern Europe than in central Europe: the estimates of the population recombination rate parameter, rho, were 0.0064 and 0.0294, respectively. The summary statistics of nucleotide diversity in central and northern European populations were compatible with an ancient bottleneck rather than the standard neutral model.  相似文献

A. vaginal isolate of Neisseria has been reported to resemble Neisseria meningitidis in biochemical characteristics but to react with serological reagents that are specific to the PI porin from Neisseria gonorrhoeae. We have confirmed that this isolate has the biochemical attributes of a meningococcus and have shown that it clusters among meningococcal Isolates on a dendrogram based on isoenzyme variation within housekeeping enzymes from populations of N. meningitidis and N. gonorrhoeae. Furthermore, the sequences of the fbp and adk genes were typical of those of N. meningitidis and were distinct from those of N. gonorrhoeae. However, the porB gene was very similar to the por genes of N. gonorrhoeae isolates that express the PIB class of outer-membrane porin (differing from one gonococcal por allele at only a single nucleotide site), and was clearly distinct from the porB genes of N. meningitidis. The isolate therefore appears to be a typical meningococcus, except that its porB gene has been replaced with the por gene from a gonococcus.  相似文献
