Styloconops hamariensis n. sp. in Somalia (Diptera, Ceratopogonidae)

A new species of the genus Styloconops (S. hamariensis n. sp.) is described on material collected in Somalia in the coastal area near Mogadiscio. This ceratopogonid midge is common during the rainy seasons and it has been observed biting on man and cattle. The new species is morphologically similar to S. spinosifrons from which it can be clearly differentiated for at least some diagnostic characters both in the female and male adults.     

Gonotrophic cycle of Leptoconops borealis (Diptera, Ceratopogonidae)]

Data are given concerning the gonotrophic cycle in fully engorged specimens of Leptoconops borealis, a mass blood sucker from the coast of the sea of Azov. In fully engorged females the repetition of gonotrophic cycles and degeneration of ovaries take place under the effect of Mermitoidea parasitism.     

Leptoconops nosopheris sp. n. (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) and Paleotrypanosoma burmanicus gen. n., sp. n. (Kinetoplastida: Trypanosomatidae), a biting midge--trypanosome vector association from the Early Cretaceous

Leptoconops nosopheris sp. n. (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) is described from a blood-filled female biting midge in Early Cretaceous Burmese amber. The new species is characterized by a very elongate terminal flagellomere, elongate cerci, and an indistinct spur on the metatibia. This biting midge contained digenetic trypanosomes (Kinetoplastida: Trypanosomatidae) in its alimentary tract and salivary glands. These trypanosomes are described as Paleotrypanosoma burmanicus gen. n., sp. n., which represents the first fossil record of a Trypanosoma generic lineage.     

细蠓属一新种及格尔木细蠓雄虫记述(双翅目:蠓科)

报道我国青海省格尔木地区细蠓属Leptoconops1新种一青海细蠓Leptoconops(Leptoconops)qinghaiensis Liu,Zhang et Gong,并记述了格尔木细蠓Leptoconops(Holoconops)geermuensis Liu et Yu雄虫。正模标本保存在北京医学昆虫标本馆,副模标本保存在兰州军区军事医学研究所。     

Herpetomonas ztiplika n. sp. (Kinetoplastida: Trypanosomatidae): a parasite of the blood-sucking biting midge Culicoides kibunensis Tokunaga, 1937 (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae)

Herein, we describe the first case of a natural infection of biting midges by a kinetoplastid protozoan. Flagellates from a female Culicoides kibunensis captured in a bird's nest were introduced into culture and characterized by light and electron microscopy. However, because the morphological data were inconclusive, the novel endosymbiont-free trypanosomatid was assigned into Herpetomonas primarily on the basis of the 18S and 5S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene sequences.     

Description of Culicoides pseudoheliconiae sp.n. from Peruvian Amazon and revalidation of Culicoides contubernalis Ortiz & Leon (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae)

A new species of the Culicoides hylas species group, Culicoides pseudoheliconiae Felippe-Bauer is described and illustrated based on female specimens from Peruvian Amazon, and Culicoides contubernalis Ortiz & Leon from Ecuador is resurrected and redescribed as a valid species. A systematic key, table with numerical characters of females of species of the Culicoides hylas group are given.     

A new species of blackflies--Simulium (Argentisimulium) dolini sp. n. (Diptera, Simuliidae)

Female, male and larva of the new species of black flies, Simulium (Argentisimulium) dolini sp. n. are described. By its morphology the species occupies an "intermediate position" between S. nolleri and S. palustre. In the USSR the species was found in wooded and forest-steppe zones of West Ukraine.     

Description of Kiefferulus opalensis n.sp. (Diptera: Chironomidae)

A new species of Kiefferulus Goetghebuer is described and compared with species from Australia. This is the first record of the genus in New Zealand.     

Ptychoptera delmastroi sp. n. (Diptera: Ptychopteridae) from Italy

Ptychoptera (Paraptychoptera) delmastroi sp. n. is described from North Italy and compared with other species of the subgenus, including structural details of the auxiliary male sexual organ.     

Cricotopus (Cricotopus) nevadensis sp. n. (Diptera,Chironomidae) from Sierra Nevada (southern Spain)

Male and female imagines, and pupal exuviae of Cricotopus (C.) nevadensis sp. n. are described. A discussion on the systematic position, a differential diagnosis and notes on the ecology of this new species are given.     

Description of Culicoides (Mataemyia) felippebauerae sp. n., Forcipomyia musae immatures, and occurrence of F. genualis, breeding in banana stems in Brazilian Amazonia (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae)

The following three species of Ceratopogonidae were collected breeding in the rhizomatous herb Phenakospermum guyannense Endl., 1833 in the vicinity of Manaus, Brazil, a new species, Culicoides (Mataemyia) felippebauerae Spinelli, Forcipomyia (Forcipomyia) genualis (Loew), and F. (Phytohelea) musae Clastrier & Dellécole. C. (M.) felippebauerae is described and illustrated as adult, pupa, and fourth instar larva, the adult compared with the adult of C. barthi Taveres and Souza and larva and pupa with those of C. dicrourus Wirth & Blanton and C. macieli Tavares & Ruiz, the only species with known immatures in the subgenus. The pupa and fourth instar larva of F. (P.) musae are described and illustrated and compared with immatures of F. (P.) edwardsi Saunders.     

Lappodiamesa willasseni sp.n. (Diptera, Chironomidae, Diamesinae) from the Soviet Far East

Lappodiamesa willasseni sp.n. is described. It differs from related species in characteristics of the male adult. the pupa and the larva. A key to the species of Luppodiamesa Serra-Tosio is given. In contrast to previously described Diamesinae . the homologes of the large polytene chromosomes are often unpaired in few regions and they have a meandric structure. The four pairs of chromosomes include three metacentric and one acrocentric (spherical) chromosoine. A series of chromosome markers are described.
