Deposit-feeders are common components of macrofaunal assemblages in intertidal soft sediments. Predation has been considered to have a central role in affecting their distribution and population dynamics. This study investigates the effect of epibenthic predators on deposit-feeders, inhabiting the shallow layers of the sediment (surface and subsurface) and also the deepest layers (e.g., burrowing shrimp Upogebia pusilla; Petagna). The experiment was conducted in summer 2000 (August-September) at three different sites on an intertidal flat in Mediterranean Sea. In the field, predators were excluded using cages, placed on the surface of the sediment. It was predicted that under the cages, (i) abundances of animals would increase and (ii) species composition of assemblages would change as an effect of the exclusion of predators. Potential artefacts caused by the cages were controlled using partial cages (PC). Composition of organic matter and porosity were also analysed under PC and in natural controls to test whether the presence of cages would change sediment characteristics on the surface. At the end of the experiment, there were no significant differences in the composition of organic matter between PC and the undisturbed sediment (UC). After 8 weeks from the beginning of the experiment, exclusion of predators enhanced the abundance of U. pusilla. There were, however, no clear-cut changes in the species composition of macrofaunal assemblages and densities of animals did not increase under the cages. Indeed, some animals (Oligochaeta, Brania oculata, and Tanais dulongii) were less abundant under the cages (EC) than outside (PC and UC). We propose that predation might play a role in regulating interspecific relationships among some surface deposit-feeders and the burrowing shrimp U. pusilla.  相似文献

Predator exclusion experiments in an intertidal mud flat   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The intensity of predation pressure exerted on the macrofauna in muddy sediments was investigated in Königshafen (island of Sylt, eastern North Sea). Tests in aquaria revealed shrimpCrangon crangon, juveniles of the shore crabCarcinus maenas, and gobiid fishPomatoschistus microps as the most important local predators. Their high abundance from July to September led to the hypothesis, that predation pressure on the infauna will be most intense during that period. Cages were set up to protect the infauna against these predators. No protective effect was achieved with cages constructed of 20-mm mesh nylon net; however, cages with screen wire and gauze of 5-mm mesh and smaller resulted in a considerable increase of the infauna. In cages of 1-mm mesh gauze, set up from March to June, the macrofauna reached an abundance of four times the control density. In the period from July to October, the factor of increase was as high as 23. Species density was 28 400 cm–2, as compared with only 7 in the control. Species which colonized the mud flat during spring and early summer established dense settlements inside the cages, but failed to do so in uncaged mud-flat areas. It is concluded that predation by young crabs, shrimp and gobies determines to a large extent the structure and dynamics in the local intertidal macrofauna.  相似文献

Field manipulations were used to determine the importance of two predatory polychaetes, Nereis virens Sars and Glycera dibranchiata Ehlers, and epibenthic predators in structuring an intertidal soft-bottom community in Maine. Epibenthic predators were excluded from portions of the soft bottom using cages which also enclosed elevated densities of the predatory polychaetes. The experiments ran 10 wk and 20 wk beginning in June 1979. Exclusion of epibenthic predators had no effect on infaunal densities after 10 wk but produced ≈ 1.5-fold increase in total density after 20 wk. Since gulls (Larus spp.) avoided all cages, including those not designed to exclude epibenthic predators, the effect of gull predation on infaunal abundances was not tested using exclusion cages. Crabs, Carcinus maenas (Linnaeus) and Cancer irroratus Say were observed in cages not designed to exclude predators.Densities of Nephtys incisa Malmgren, Polydora ligni Webster, Streblospio benedicti Webster, Scoloplos robustus Verrill, phyllodocids, and bivalves were highest in cages containing elevated Glycera dibranchiata density and lowest in cages containing elevated Nereis virens density. N. virens was the only taxon whose abundance was reduced in the presence of Glycera dibranchiata which may account for high infaunal densities in the G. dibranchiata treatment. Laboratory experiments demonstrated that G. dibranchiata are capable of preying on Nereis virens. Additional field experiments revealed that the presence of N. Virens reduced the abundance of some taxa within the first 10 days of colonization. N. virens may have reduced infaunal densities by predation and/or disturbance at the sediment surface. These results suggest that complex interactions within the infauna are important in structuring marine soft-bottom communities.  相似文献

Monitoring of cyanobacteria and their toxins are traditionally conducted by cell counting, chlorophyll-a (chl-a) determination and cyanotoxin measurements, respectively. These methods are tedious, costly, time consuming, and insensitive to rapid changes in water quality and cyanobacterial abundance. We have applied and tested an online phycocyanin (PC) fluorescence probe for rapid monitoring of cyanobacteria in the Macau Storage Reservoir (MSR) that is experiencing cyanobacterial blooms. The relationships among cyanobacterial abundance, biovolume, cylindrospermopsin concentration, and PC fluorescence were analyzed using both laboratory and in-the-field studies. The performance of the probe was compared with traditional methods, and its advantages and limitations were assessed in pure and mixed cyanobacterial cultures in the laboratory. The proposed techniques successfully estimated the species including Microcystis and Cylindrospermopsis, two toxic species recently observed in the MSR. During February–November, 2010, the PC probe detected high correlations between PC and cell numbers (R 2 = 0.71). Unlike the chl-a content, which indicates only the total algal biomass, the PC pigment specifically indicates cyanobacteria. These results support the PC parameter as a reliable estimate of cyanobacterial cell number, especially in freshwater bodies where the phytoplankton community and structure are stable. Thus, the PC probe is potentially applicable to online monitoring of cyanobacteria.  相似文献

Experiments on epibenthic predation in the Wadden Sea   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Field experiments were designed to evaluate the role of predators in the Wadden Sea, small predators like shore crabs, shrimps and gobies, and large ones like flatfish and birds. Exclosures, maintained in aCorophium volutator bed, an eelgrass bed, in a sandy and a muddy flat, protected the infauna from such epibenthic predation. The resulting changes in the macrofauna were recorded and compared with an unaffected control area. In sandy and muddy flats of the lower intertidal zone, cages (mesh size5 mm) altered abundance and composition of the infauna almost entirely. Nearly all species achieved higher population densities than in the control area, and in addition, the number of species increased as well. In the the scarcely populated mud flat a dense suspension-feeder assemblage emerged, associated with numerous tube-building polychaetes. The sand flat, normally dominated by deposit feeders, also became occupied by a dense suspension-feeder assemblage, mainly cockles. In contrast, narrowly meshed cages had only little effect in the beds of eelgrass and ofCorophium volutator. Both are positioned in the upper intertidal zone. Although a number of species still responded with significant increases in abundance, many remained indifferent or even tended to be less abundant within cages. Cages provided with a 20-mm mesh nylon net, excluding only birds, flatfish and the biggest crabs, increased significantly the survival of large-sized infaunal members. This was only apparent in the upper intertidal zone. It was concluded, that small sized epibenthic predators are the major determinants of the dynamic species abundance pattern of the lower intertidal flats. In the eelgrass bed, the meshwork of rootlets constitutes an important spatial refuge from these predators. The complex habitat structure causes a diversified faunal assemblage. TheCorophium bed in the uppermost intertidal zone is less accessable to predators like crabs, shrimp and gobies. The monotonous appearance of this faunal assemblage is assumed to be the outcome of competitive exclusion and of occasional harsh physical conditions.  相似文献

Ciliates (protozoa) are ubiquitous components of plankton community and play important roles in aquatic ecosystems in regards of their abundance, biomass, diversity and energy turnover. Based on the stratified samples collected from the northern Beibu Gulf in August 2011, species composition, abundance, biomass, diversity and spatial pattern of planktonic ciliates were studied. Furthermore the main environmental factors controlling ciliate communities were determined. A total of 101 species belonging to 44 genera and 7 orders (i.e., Oligotrichida, Haptorida, Euplotida, Sessilida, Pleurostomatida, Scuticociliatida and Tintinnida) were identified. The variation of ciliate communities was significant at horizontal level, but that was not at vertical level. Based on cluster analysis, ciliate communities were divided into three main groups. Redundancy analysis (RDA) revealed that Group A, existing in the waters with higher concentration of phosphorus and nitrogen, was dominated by Tintinnidium primitivum. Group B in the waters with lower temperature and chlorophyll-a concentration, was dominated by Leegaardiella ovalis. Group C, existing in the waters with higher temperature and chlorophyll-a concentration, was dominated by large Strombidium spp. and Mesodinium rubrum. Combining multiple analytic methods, our results strongly supported that phosphorus, nitrogen and chlorophyll-a were the most significant factors affecting the ciliate communities in the northern Beibu Gulf in summer. Concentration of phosphorus and nitrogen primarily influenced ciliate biomass, implying a potential impact of eutrophication on ciliate growth. The correlation with chlorophyll-a concentration, on one hand indicate the response of ciliates to the food availability, and on the other hand, the ciliates containing chloroplasts or endosymbionts may contribute greatly to the chlorophyll-a.  相似文献

Ecosystem engineers change abiotic conditions, community assembly and ecosystem functioning. Consequently, their loss may modify thresholds of ecosystem response to disturbance and undermine ecosystem stability. This study investigates how loss of the bioturbating lugworm Arenicola marina modifies the response to macroalgal detrital enrichment of sediment biogeochemical properties, microphytobenthos and macrofauna assemblages. A field manipulative experiment was done on an intertidal sandflat (Oosterschelde estuary, The Netherlands). Lugworms were deliberately excluded from 1× m sediment plots and different amounts of detrital Ulva (0, 200 or 600 g Wet Weight) were added twice. Sediment biogeochemistry changes were evaluated through benthic respiration, sediment organic carbon content and porewater inorganic carbon as well as detrital macroalgae remaining in the sediment one month after enrichment. Microalgal biomass and macrofauna composition were measured at the same time. Macroalgal carbon mineralization and transfer to the benthic consumers were also investigated during decomposition at low enrichment level (200 g WW). The interaction between lugworm exclusion and detrital enrichment did not modify sediment organic carbon or benthic respiration. Weak but significant changes were instead found for porewater inorganic carbon and microalgal biomass. Lugworm exclusion caused an increase of porewater carbon and a decrease of microalgal biomass, while detrital enrichment drove these values back to values typical of lugworm-dominated sediments. Lugworm exclusion also decreased the amount of macroalgae remaining into the sediment and accelerated detrital carbon mineralization and CO2 release to the water column. Eventually, the interaction between lugworm exclusion and detrital enrichment affected macrofauna abundance and diversity, which collapsed at high level of enrichment only when the lugworms were present. This study reveals that in nature the role of this ecosystem engineer may be variable and sometimes have no or even negative effects on stability, conversely to what it should be expected based on current research knowledge.  相似文献

The major light-harvesting complex of Amphidinium (A.) carterae, chlorophyll-a–chlorophyll-c 2–peridinin–protein complex (acpPC), was studied using ultrafast pump-probe spectroscopy at low temperature (60 K). An efficient peridinin–chlorophyll-a energy transfer was observed. The stimulated emission signal monitored in the near-infrared spectral region was stronger when redder part of peridinin pool was excited, indicating that these peridinins have the S1/ICT (intramolecular charge-transfer) state with significant charge-transfer character. This may lead to enhanced energy transfer efficiency from “red” peridinins to chlorophyll-a. Contrary to the water-soluble antenna of A. carterae, peridinin–chlorophyll-a protein, the energy transfer rates in acpPC were slower under low-temperature conditions. This fact underscores the influence of the protein environment on the excited-state dynamics of pigments and/or the specificity of organization of the two pigment–protein complexes.  相似文献

The mixing and displacement of sediment by benthic macrofauna (bioturbation) has major biogeochemical implications, and can control rates of organic matter degradation and carbon burial. Large, abundant, mobile macrofauna often dominate sediment bioturbation, and heart urchins of the genus Echinocardium are regarded as key sediment bioturbators in marine systems throughout the world. To better understand the bioturbation potential and functional role of Echinocardium, we developed a mathematical model and parameterized it with field data from six locations in northern New Zealand in order to estimate bioturbation rates in these places. Although urchin sizes and densities were measured in consecutive years at all six locations, we obtained a third model parameter, urchin movement rate, from one time and place only (Site OB5). Because confidence in model output was greatest at OB5, and since OB5 had the highest sediment reworking rate of all sites, our model yielded a good upper bound estimate for the bioturbation potential of Echinocardium in the areas examined. The volume of sediment displaced by Echinocardium populations reached 20,000 cm3 m−2 d−1 at OB5, suggesting that surface sediment is reworked about every 3 days at sites where Echinocardium is abundant. Experimental work with a fluorescent tracer at OB5 suggested limited downward particle movement as a result of Echinocardium bioturbation, though vertical profiles of chlorophyll a and organic matter content indicated well mixed sediment. The loss of Echinocardium because of broad-scale anthropogenic disturbance to the seabed could have major consequences on marine ecosystem functioning.  相似文献

The temporal dynamics and spatial distribution of microphytobenthic chlorophyll-a in the layer 0–1 cm were determined in the Western Scheldt estuary over the period 1991–1992. Connections between the annually averaged benthic chlorophyll-a and station elevation and sediment composition (as a measure of the hydrodynamic energy caused by currents and waves) were also examined.Microphytobenthic chlorophyll-a showed one main peak in early summer and a smaller peak in autumn. The mean chlorophyll-a concentration of 113 mg Chl-a m–2 in the upper centimeter is of the same order of magnitude as in other estuarine areas. The average annual primary production of the microphytobenthos has been estimated at 136 g C m–2 y–1 The primary production of sediment inhabiting microalgae is at least 17% of the total primary production in the estuary.Considerable differences in annually averaged chlorophyll-a emerges between the stations. These differences are related mainly to the interaction between station elevation and clay content of the sediment.  相似文献

Based on 388 parallel data of phytoplankton biomass and chlorophyll-a of two shallow lakes and two ponds, the following results were obtained:
  1. Relative chlorophyll-a content of phytoplankton biomass varied between 0.08–1.88%; chlorophyll-a concentration showed great differences among lakes.
  2. Significant correlations (r = 0.68–0.92) were established between phytoplankton biomass and chlorophyll-a concentration. The regression in the artificial ponds was non-linear.
  3. In parallel with the increase of average cell volume, a decrease in relative chlorophyll-a content was observed. A significant correlation (r = + 0.83) between the two variables was found. Relative chlorophyll-a content of phytoplankton is a log-function of average cell volume.

Cage culture of freshwater prawns in open waters is prone to the entry of predators and competitors that particularly hamper production. This study was conducted to determine how smaller net mesh sizes to reduce entry of unwanted species inside the cages affects the production of Macrobrachium rosenbergii in lake‐based cages. Juvenile prawns were stocked in cages (7 × 7 × 1.5 m) of two net mesh sizes at 10 individuals m?2 and cultured for 10 months in a shallow eutrophic lake in the Philippines. The two net mesh sizes were either 5 mm‐mesh B‐nets or and 1 mm‐mesh Hapa nets. Each treatment had four replicates each and was fed based on biomass with commercially formulated feed. Monitoring of various production parameters was done during the two phases of culture: batch phase on days 63 and 127 and the selective harvest phase on days 187, 219, 253, 281 and 313, when the experiment was terminated. For the first 127 days of culture, the weight, percent weight increase, daily growth rate (DGR), specific growth rate (SGR), yield and feed conversion ratio (FCR) were significantly better in prawns reared in the Hapa compared to the B‐nets. During the selective harvest phase the blue claw, orange claw and berried females were selectively harvested and the remaining prawns returned to the cages. After changes in stocking density through culling, ancova was used to compare the effect of mesh size with the total number of prawns returned to the cages as a covariate. Yield was significantly higher in the Hapa nets. Weight, DGR, SGR and FCR were also consistently higher in the Hapa nets, although not always significantly different. The overall better performance of prawns reared in the Hapa net cages was due to: (i) the reduction in the entry of predator and competitor species in the finer‐meshed Hapa compared to the larger mesh B‐net, (ii) more natural food trapped inside the Hapa cages, and (iii) a higher number of selectively harvested prawns, which decreased stocking density in the cages and improved growth. Use of small mesh size nets is recommended in the cage culture of M. rosenbergii in inland natural water bodies.  相似文献

Sampling efficiency of several sieve mesh sizes (2, 1, 0.5, 0.2 and 0.1 mm) was tested in invertebrate assemblages associated to Sargassum stenophyllum. Samples of this brown algae were collected in southeastern Brazil to determine whether different sampling devices resulted in differences on the abundance and composition of the macrofauna. The 1 and 2 mm mesh sizes sampled less organisms, resulting in smaller abundances, densities, number of species and diversity, when compared to the other three mesh sizes, that achieved similar results. The most efficient sieve was the 0.5 mm mesh, sampling 85.8% and 94.5% of gammaridean and caprellidean amphipods, respectively, and 93.1% of gastropods. However, polychaetes and isopods were best sampled with the 0.2 mm sieve. Our results suggest that caution should be exercised when deciding on which sieve to use, as mesh sizes commonly used in benthic studies (1 and 0.5 mm) may result in very different estimates of diversity and abundance, as well as community structure patterns. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The effects of ecosystem engineers can be mediated by direct and indirect interactions. For suspension-feeding bivalves that contribute to benthic-pelagic coupling, indirect effects have been linked to hydrodynamics; however, the influence of these ecosystem engineers may also operate through interactions with surrounding sediments, microphytes and macrofauna that, in turn, affect nutrient and oxygen fluxes. This study investigated the indirect effects of an epibenthic suspension-feeding bivalve (Atrina zelandica) on ammonium and nitrate-nitrite effluxes from the sediment, and oxygen consumption in the overlying waters, under dark conditions, at two sites with different environmental characteristics. Location-dependent effects were observed in the relative strength of the effect of Atrina on microphyte and macrofaunal abundance. The difference between the strength of the effect of Atrina on macrofauna between sites was not driven by a single species or type of species; rather all the species decreasing in abundance away from Atrina were small species that utilised the sediment water interface. Location-dependent effects were also observed in the relative strength of the effect of microphyte and macrofaunal abundance on oxygen and nutrient fluxes. While microphytes were an important consumer of oxygen at one site, at the other site, small infaunal macrofauna were important. Similarly, the strength of the effect of surrounding macrofauna on ammonium efflux varied between sites. These findings demonstrate the importance of natural history and species functions for understanding complex responses. They suggest that indirect effects by key benthic macrofaunal species in marine systems can also be important to benthic-pelagic coupling. In particular, while key species are often large, excretion and respiration of smaller macrofauna can be important to the exchange of nutrients near the seafloor and oxygen consumption in the benthic boundary layer.  相似文献

Spatial distribution and functional structure of intertidal benthic macrofauna in relation to environmental variables in the Jade Bay (southern North Sea) were studied and compared with other intertidal areas of the Wadden Sea. A total of 128 stations covering the whole Jade Bay were sampled in summer 2009. A total of 114 taxa were found. Highest species numbers occurred in the subtidal areas, whereas highest mean abundances were found in the upper intertidal areas. Based on species abundance data, six significantly distinct macrofauna communities in the Jade Bay were identified and evaluated with multivariate statistics, univariate correlations and canonical correspondence analysis. Differences in these community patterns were caused by the response of the dominant species (Hydrobia ulvae, Tubificoides benedii, Pygospio elegans, Caulleriella killariensis, Scoloplos armiger, Urothoe poseidonis, Microprotopus maculatus) to prevailing environmental conditions along the gradient from the lower and exposed sandy intertidal areas via intermediate mixed sediments to the upper mudflat areas. Distribution patterns in relation to tidal zonation were best explained by variability in submergence time, Chlorophyll a (chl a) content and sediment composition (mud content), which are proxies for hydrodynamic conditions and food availability. Species inventory and species richness were comparable with other intertidal areas of the Wadden Sea, but the Jade Bay differs from these areas regarding dominant species. Differences in sediment composition and morphological characteristics (macrotidal versus mesotidal Wadden Sea areas) are discussed for comparison of regional differences.  相似文献

Highly mobile aquatic predators are known to forage in the intertidal during periods of immersion. There is limited quantitative information, however, on the extent to which these predators influence the abundance of grazing molluscs which are known to have a key role in structuring intertidal assemblages. Our preliminary video observations revealed that crabs and small fish were abundant on shores in southwest England during high-tide. We then used manipulative experiments to quantify the effect of small mobile aquatic predators on the abundance of limpets (Patella vulgata L.). On the lower shore at two moderately sheltered rocky shores three treatments were established: complete cage, partial cage (cage control) and uncaged (natural condition). The complete cages excluded all predators. The partial cage treatment allowed full access to small predators and the uncaged treatment allowed access to all predators. After two months, limpet abundance in uncaged and partial cage treatments had declined by around 50% compared to the complete cage treatment. Population structure also changed with survival of larger individuals being greater than smaller individuals in the open and partial cage treatments compared to the complete cage treatment. The effects of excluding predators were consistent at small (meters) and large spatial scales (kilometres) and hence, it would appear that the outcomes of our research are generally applicable to similar shores in the region. To explore the mechanism behind the differential effects of predators according to prey size, we compared the detachment force required to remove limpets of differing sizes from the shore. This was around four times greater for larger individuals than for smaller ones indicating that smaller limpets were more vulnerable to predation. These effects were also consistent between locations. Subsequent laboratory observations showed that the crabs Carcinus maenas (L.), Necora puber (L.) and Cancer pagurus (L.) which are locally abundant predators of limpets, had differing handling behaviour but were all highly efficient at removing limpets from substratum. Hence, shell width and attachment force appeared to be critical factors influencing the vulnerability of limpets to predation by these crabs. Limpets are known to control the abundance of macroalgae on shores in the North-east Atlantic and so our conclusions about the role of mobile predators in regulating the abundance of these grazers are important to our broader understanding of the ecology of these shores.  相似文献

Plant density may have an impact on macrofauna structure in constructed wetlands (CW). In this study, Panicum maximum density effect on macrofauna structure in pilot-scale vertical flow CW treating domestic wastewater was estimated. Two beds were planted with P. maximum at 10 roots/m2 (low density) and two others at 20 roots/m2 (high density). Two unplanted beds were used as controls. After six months of wastewater treatment, macrofauna was collected by taking five cores of sediment samples at the corners and the centre of each bed following three layers in the vertical profile. Plant density seems not to impact significantly the CW performance. However, the plant density of 10 roots/m2 (low density) provided higher wastewater treatment efficiency. Concerning macrofauna, 11 taxa belonging to 6 classes and 11 orders were collected. Macrofauna was significantly more diversified in the planted beds than in the control. But the two plant densities investigated do not show significant difference between macrofauna diversity of the planted beds. Macrofauna abundance was two- and three-fold higher, respectively, in the planted beds at high and low densities than in the controls. From the upper surface to the bottom of the beds, macrofauna diversity and abundance decreased, and were heavily dominated by Annelida.  相似文献

Field manipulative experiments were used to investigate some of the potential regulating factors of the meiofauna of a Louisiana salt marsh. Effects of various combinations of marsh grass clipping, exclusion of natant macrofauna, and tidal flushing on nematode, polychaete, and copepod density, as well as copepod species composition, were determined. Edaphic chlorophyll a was measured simultaneously. Grass clipping consistently affected the meiobenthic copepod assemblage; diversity and evenness dropped by Day 29 when Nitocra lacustris (Schmankevitsch) became dominant. Nematode density relative to controls was lower by Day 29 in clipped plots. N. lacustris abundance increased relative to controls in clipped plots enclosed by a solid Plexiglas box. Nematode density was negatively correlated with chlorophyll a content. No simple explanation of these patterns is possible; concomitant changes in microflora coupled with associated changes in the physical/biological environment of meiofauna must be responsible. Exclusion of only natant macrofauna (fish, shrimp, crabs) had no influence on meiofauna contrary to findings in other marshes. Dense grass cover and short, irregular tidal inundation may normally restrict intertidal grazing in Louisiana marshes.  相似文献

The feeding biology of Enchytraeus crypticus and other enchytraeids is poorly understood as is their effect on nematophagous fungi. Because enchytraeids had been associated with nematophagous fungi in the field and had suppressed these fungi in soil microcosms, we tested the hypothesis that exclusion of enchytraeids, largely E. crypticus, would improve establishment of certain nematophagous fungi in field plots. The fungi, Hirsutella rhossiliensis and Monacrosporium gephyropagum, are being studied as potential control agents of plant-parasitic nematodes and were formulated as hyphae in alginate pellets. The pellets were mixed into soil without enchytraeids and placed in cages (PVC pipe, 80 cm3 volume) with fine (20 μm) or coarse (480 μm) mesh; cages were buried 15 cm deep in field plots and then recovered after 6–52 days. When fine mesh was used, enchytraeids were excluded and the fungi increased to large numbers. When coarse mesh was used, enchytraeid numbers in cages increased rapidly and the fungi did poorly. Although mesh also affected other potential fungivores, including collembolans and large dorylaimid nematodes, we suspect that enchytraeids were more important because large numbers were consistently found in cages with coarse mesh soon after the cages were placed in soil. Organisms smaller than enchytraeids (bacteria, fungi, and protozoa) also appeared to be important because the fungi did better in heat-treated soil than in non-heat-treated soil, regardless of mesh size. The rapid increase in enchytraeid numbers in cages with hyphal pellets and coarse mesh was probably caused by movement of enchytraeids toward the pellets with hyphae: increase in enchytraeid numbers was minimal when movement into cages was blocked (or when cages contained pellets without hyphae). Overall, the data were consistent with the hypothesis that enchytraeids, or other meso- or macrofauna, contributed to suppression of nematophagous fungi in our field plots.
