This investigation was performed to study the effect on plant water relations and growth when some of roots grow into dry soil. Common spring water (Triticum aestivum) plants were grown from seed in soil in 1.2 m long PVC (polyvinyl chloride) tubes. Some of the tubes had a PVC partition along their center so that plants developed a split root system (SPR). Part of the roots grew in fully irrigated soil on one side of the partition while the rest of the roots grew into a very dry (-4.1 MPa) soil on the other side of the partition. Split root plants were compared with plants grown from emergence on stored soil moisture (STOR) and with plants that were fully irrigated as needed (IRR). The experiment was duplicated over two temperature regimes (10°/20°C and 15°/25°C, night/day temperatures) in growth chambers. Data were collected on root dry matter distribution, soil moisture status, midday leaf water potential (LWP), leaf relative water content (RWC) and parameters of plant growth and yield. Some roots were found in the dry side of SPR already at 21 DAE (days after emergence) at a soil depth of 15 to 25 cm. Soil water potential around these roots was -0.7 to -1.0 MPa at midday, as compared with the initial value of -4.1 MPa. Therefore, water apparently flowed from the plant into the dry soil, probably during the night. Despite having most of their roots (around 2/3 of the total) in wet soil, SPR plants developed severe plant water stress, even in comparison with STOR plants. Already at 21 DAE, SPR plants had a LWP of -1.5 to -2.0 MPa, while IRR and STOR had a LWP of -0.5 MPa or higher. As a consequence of their greater plant water stress, SPR as compared with IRR plants were lower in tiller number, ear number, shoot dry matter, root dry matter, total biomass, plant height and grain yield and had more epicuticular wax on their leaves. It was concluded that the exposure of a relatively small part of a plant root system to a dry soil may result in a plant-to-soil water potential gradient which may cause severe plant water stress, leading to reduced plant growth and yield.

Summary The hydraulic resistivity ofVicia faba L. roots grown in soil was estimated from steady state measurements of transpiration rate and leaf and soil water potentials. Root and stem axial resistivities, estimated from xylem vessel radii, were negligible. Root radial resistivity was estimated to be 1.3×1012 sm−1. This root radial resistivity value was used to estimate, root resistance to water uptake for a field crop ofVicia faba. Previously published results were used for root distribution and soil water contents at the drained upper limit (DUL) and the lower limit (LL) of extractable soil water. Soil resistance to water uptake was estimated from single root theory using the steady rate solution. At the DUL, root resistance was about 105 times greater than soil resistance. At the LL, soil resistance exceeded root resistance for depths less than 0.3 m, but for depths greater than this soil resistance was smaller than root resistance. Estimates of possible uptake rates at given leaf water potentials indicated that overall soil resistance had a negligible influence upon uptake, even at the LL. The reliability of this result is examined in detail. It is concluded that over the complete range of extractable soil water contents soil resistanceper se would not have limited water use by this crop. This conclusion may also be valid for a wide range of soil and crop combinations.

Summary First year seedlings of English oak (Quercus Cobur) and silver birch (Betula pendula) were subjected to pressure-volume analysis to investigate the water potential components and cell wall properties of single leaves. It was hoped that this rapid-drying technique would differentiate between reductions in plant solute potential resulting from dehydration and the effects of solute accumulation.Comparison of results from these experiments with those of slow drying treatments (over a number of days) with plants growing in tubes of soil, indicated that some solute accumulation may have occurred in drying oak leaves. High leaf turgor and leaf conductance were maintained for a significant period of the drying cycle. Roots of well-watered oak plants extended deep into the soil profile, and possibly as a result of solute regulation and therefore turgor maintenance, root growth of unwatered plants was greater than that of their well-watered counterparts. This was particularly the case deep in the profile. As a result of deep root penetration, water deep in the soil core was used by oak plants to maintain plant turgor, and quite low soil water potentials were recorded in the lower soil segments.Root growth of well-watered birch seedlings was prolific but roots of both well-watered and unwatered plants were restricted to the upper part of the profile. Root growth of unwatered plants was reduced despite the existence of high soil water potentials deep in the profile. Shallow rooting birch seedlings were unable to use this water.Pressure-volume analysis indicated that significant reductions of water potential, which are required for water uptake from drying soil, would occur in oak with only a small reduction in plant water content compared to the situation in birch. This was a result of the low solute potential in oak leaves combined with a high modulus of elasticity of cell walls. Deep rooting of oak seedlings, combined with these characteristics, which will be particularly important when soil deep in the profile begins to dry, mean that this species may be comparatively successful when growing on dry sites.

Stomatal behavior and water relations of waterlogged tomato plants
The effects of waterlogging the soil on leaf water potential, leaf epidermal conductance, transpiration, root conductance to water flow, and petiole epinasty have been examined in the tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.). Stomatal conductance and transpiration are reduced by 30% to 40% after approximately 24 hours of soil flooding. This is not due to a transient water deficit, as leaf water potential is unchanged, even though root conductance is decreased by the stress. The stomatal response apparently prevents any reduction in leaf water potential. Experiments with varied time of flooding, root excision, and stem girdling provide indirect evidence for an influence of roots in maintaining stomatal opening potential. This root-effect cannot be entirely accounted for by alterations in source-sink relationships. Although 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid, the immediate precursor of ethylene, is transported from the roots to the shoots of waterlogged tomato plants, it has no direct effect on stomatal conductance. Ethylene-induced petiole epinasty develops coincident with partial stomatal closure in waterlogged plants. Leaf epinasty may have beneficial effects on plant water balance by reducing light interception.

Influence of temperature and water potential on root growth of white oak
Root growth of white oak ( Quercus alba L.) was observed under field conditions using a rhizotron. The effects of temperature, soil water potential, and leaf water potential were evaluated on three measures of root growth and development: root elongation rate, number of growing roots, and root growth intensity (sum of projected root area compared to the total root viewing area). Root elongation rate was linearly related to changes in soil temperature and soil water potential. At soil temperatures less than 17deg;C, temperature was the dominant factor affecting rate of growth, bat at temperatures greater than 17°C soil water potential became the important factor. Unlike root elongation rate, the number of growing roots and root growth intensity increased at cold soil temperatures (8°C) and at soil water potentials of-0.3 to -0.8 MPa. At high soil water potentials (-0.1 MPa) root elongation rate reached a maximum while the number of growing roots and root growth intensity were low. These differences showed that root growth and development were not exclusively affected by the soil environment. In addition, the relationship between root growth and predawn leaf water potential suggested that root growth was a contributing factor to the drought resistance of white oak.

Uptake of soil water by plants may result in significant gradients between bulk soil and soil in the vicinity of roots. Few experimental studies of water potential gradients in close proximity to roots, and no studies on the relationship of water potential gradients to the root and leaf water potentials, have been conducted. The occurrence and importance of pre-dawn gradients in the soil and their relation to the pre-dawn root and leaf water potentials were investigated with seedlings of four species. Pre-germinated seeds were grown without watering for 7 and lid in a silt loam soil with initial soil matric potentials of -0.02, -0.1 and -0.22 MPa. Significant gradients, independent of the species, were observed only at pre-dawn soil matric potentials lower than -0.25 MPa; the initial soil matric potentials were -0.1 MPa. At an initial bulk soil matric potential of -0.22 MPa, a steep gradient between bulk and rhizoplane soil was observed after 7 d for maize (Zea mays L. cv. Issa) and sunflower (Helianthus annuus L. cv. Nanus), in contrast to barley (Hordeum vulgare L. cv. Athos) and wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv. Kolibri). Pre-dawn root water potentials were usually about the same as the bulk soil matric potential and were higher than the rhizoplane soil matric potential. Pre-dawn root and leaf water potentials tended to be much higher than rhizoplane soil matric potentials when the latter were lower than -0.5 MPa. It is concluded that plants tend to become equilibrated overnight with the wetter bulk soil or with wetter zones in the bulk soil. Plants can thus circumvent negative effects of localized steep pre-dawn soil matric potential gradients. This may be of considerable importance for water uptake and growth in drying soil.

In laboratory and greenhouse experiments with potted plants, shoots and roots are exposed to temperature regimes throughout a 24 h (diel) cycle that can differ strongly from the regime under which these plants have evolved. In the field, roots are often exposed to lower temperatures than shoots. When the root‐zone temperature in Ricinus communis was decreased below a threshold value, leaf growth occurred preferentially at night and was strongly inhibited during the day. Overall, leaf expansion, shoot biomass growth, root elongation and ramification decreased rapidly, carbon fluxes from shoot to root were diminished and carbohydrate contents of both root and shoot increased. Further, transpiration rate was not affected, yet hydrostatic tensions in shoot xylem increased. When root temperature was increased again, xylem tension reduced, leaf growth recovered rapidly, carbon fluxes from shoot to root increased, and carbohydrate pools were depleted. We hypothesize that the decreased uptake of water in cool roots diminishes the growth potential of the entire plant – especially diurnally, when the growing leaf loses water via transpiration. As a consequence, leaf growth and metabolite concentrations can vary enormously, depending on root‐zone temperature and its heterogeneity inside pots.

The effects of water stress on growth and water relations of loblolly and white pine seedlings were studied during series of drying cycles. As mean soil water potential decreased, growth of roots, needles, and buds decreased. Growth of roots during successive severe drying cycles was not uniform, however. A study of needle and root extension showed that of the total growth of roots for 3 7-day drying cycles, only 6% occurred during the third cycle, while needle extension was uniform for the 3 cycles. The difference in response of needles and roots to drying cycles may be attributed primarily to the effect of water stress on the growing region. When subjected to a severe stress, roots matured toward the tip and became dormant, resulting in less growth during subsequent drying cycles. The intercalary growing region of needles, however, was not altered seriously enough by the stress to cause a difference in amount of growth during each drying cycle.

Transpiration of loblolly pine was lower in the second drying cycle than in the first. Needle water potential after rewatering was as high as that of control plants watered daily; root resistance was apparently not important in restricting transpiration during a second drying cycle. Needle diffusion resistance of loblolly pine, measured with a low-resistance diffusion porometer, was slightly higher during the second drying cycle than during the first. In addition, many primary needles were killed during the first period of stress. These factors contributed to the reduction of transpiration during the second drying cycle. Diffusion resistance of Coleus increased and transpiration ceased during the first drying cycle while water potential remained relatively high. After rewatering, both leaf resistance and transpiration returned to the control level, presumably because the stress during the first period of drying was not severe. The diffusion resistances observed for well-watered plants were 30 to 50 sec·cm−1 for loblolly pine, 3 to 5 sec·cm−1 for Coleus, and 4 to 6 sec·cm−1 for tomato. These values agree closely with those reported by other workers.

Summary Young seedlings of English Oak, Quercus robur L., and Silver Birch, Betula verrucosa Ehrl., were subjected to a number of consecutive periods during which water was withheld. During one 14-day period leaf-and soil-water potentials and leaf- and root-solute potentials of two groups of plants were sampled at noon of each day. One group of plants was watered every day while water was withheld from the other group. Solute accumulation in roots and leaves of oak seedlings subjected to water stress resulted in maintenance of turgor and high leaf conductance as the soil dried. In birch seedlings turgor was only maintained by stomatal closure at high soil water potential.Fourteen consecutive water stress cycles greatly reduced the growth of birch seedlings but had little effect on oak seedlings other than to alter root morphology. Water stress treatment resulted in the production of long thin roots in this plant. Stomatal behaviour in oak and birch seedlings during the 14-week stress period was consistent with observed changes in leaf water and solute potentials. Daily solute accumulation in oak leaves was presumably responsible for the maintenance of plant growth as water potentials fell.

Abstract Water use, drought response and growth were examined under controlled conditions in four interbreeding willow species from different geographical origins (two clones of Salix viminalis L., one clone of S. viminalis × S. schwerenii E. Wolf and one clone of S. purpurea L.). The levels of soil water depletion that plants could sustain without wilting varied markedly between the clones. The level of drought resistance expressed this way was positively related to resistance to xylem cavitation, negatively related to the maximum stomatal conductance, and positively related to early stomatal closure. The rate of stomatal closure, however, was negatively related to the resistance to xylem cavitation. Prior to drought, there were no significant differences between leaf-specific hydraulic conductances of the clones when whole plants were considered. However, there were differences if the roots and shoots were considered separately. Drought resistance was negatively related to maximum growth yields. This is probably because resources were diverted away from leaf production to the production of denser wood (wood density was positively related to cavitation resistance), and, for one clone, to the growth of a larger root system. In addition, because the level of drought resistance was negatively related to the maximum stomatal conductance, growth may have been adversely affected as a result of reduced photosynthesis. Given its high water extraction ability, one of the clones started to wilt sooner than expected, although only lateral shoots were affected. This appeared to indicate a strategy of sacrificing expendable shoots.

The effects of nitrogen (N) nutrition on growth, N uptake and leaf osmotic potential of rice plants (Oryza sativa L. ev. IR 36) during simulated water stress were determined. Twenty-one-day-old seedlings in high (28.6 × 10 ?4M) and low (7.14 × 10 4M) N levels were exposed to decreased nutrient solution water potentials by addition of polyethylene glycol 6000. The roots were separated from the solution by a semi-permeable membrane. Nutrient solution water potential was ?0.6 × 105 Pa and was lowered stepwise to ?1 × 105, ?2 × 105, ?4 × 105 and ?6 × 105 Pa at 2-day intervals. Plant height, leaf area and shoot dry weight of high and low nitrogen plants were reduced by lower osmotic potentials of the root medium. Osmotic stress caused greater shoot growth reduction in high N than in low N plants. Stressed and unstressed plants in 7.14 × 104M N had more root dry matter than the corresponding plants in 28.6 × 104M N. Dawn leaf water potential of stressed plants was 1 × 105 to 5.5 × 105 Pa lower than nutrient solution water potential. Nitrogen-deficient water-stressed plants, however, maintained higher dawn leaf water potential than high nitrogen water-stressed plants. It is suggested that this was due to higher root-to-shoot ratios of N deficient plants. The osmotic potentials of leaves at full turgor for control plants were about 1.3 × 105 Pa higher in 7.14 × 10?4M than in 28.6 × 10?4M N and osmotic adjustment of 2.6 × 105 and 4.3 × 105 Pa was obtained in low and high N plants, respectively. The nitrogen status of plants, therefore, affected the ability of the rice plant to adjust osmotically during water stress. Plant water stress decreased transpiration and total N content in shoots of both N treatments. Reduced shoot growth as a result of water stress caused the decrease in amount of water transpired. Transpiration and N uptake were significantly correlated. Our results show that nitrogen content is reduced in water-stressed plants by the integrated effects of plant water stress per se on accumulation of dry matter and transpiring leaf area as well as the often cited changes in soil physical properties of a drying root medium.

Influence of soil water deficits on root growth of cotton seedlings
Summary Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L. cv. H14) seedlings were raised in soil of differing soil water content in specially designed pots in which the roots had access to freely available water and nutrients located 2.5 cm below the base of the soil core. The time for root emergence from the soil core and the rate of root growth were measured daily from sowing to harvest. The root and shoot dry weight and leaf water potential were measured at the final harvest 16 days after sowing. As soil water content decreased, the root emerged from the soil earlier and the initial rate of root elongation was faster. In spite of the availability of freely available water, the plants in the soil at low water contents had significantly lower leaf water potentials than those in soil at high water contents. The root: shoot ratio increased as the soil water content decreased. This arose from an absolute increase in root weight, with shoot weight not being significantly affected.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi alleviate drought stress in their host plants via the direct uptake and transfer of water and nutrients through the fungal hyphae to the host plants. To quantify the contribution of the hyphae to plant water uptake, a new split-root hyphae system was designed and employed on barley grown in loamy soil inoculated with Glomus intraradices under well-watered and drought conditions in a growth chamber with a 14-h light period and a constant temperature (15 degrees C; day/night). Drought conditions were initiated 21 days after sowing, with a total of eight 7-day drying cycles applied. Leaf water relations, net photosynthesis rates, and stomatal conductance were measured at the end of each drying cycle. Plants were harvested 90 days after sowing. Compared to the control treatment, the leaf elongation rate and the dry weight of the shoots and roots were reduced in all plants under drought conditions. However, drought resistance was comparatively increased in the mycorrhizal host plants, which suffered smaller decreases in leaf elongation, net photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, and turgor pressure compared to the non-mycorrhizal plants. Quantification of the contribution of the arbuscular mycorrhizal hyphae to root water uptake showed that, compared to the non-mycorrhizal treatment, 4 % of water in the hyphal compartment was transferred to the root compartment through the arbuscular mycorrhizal hyphae under drought conditions. This indicates that there is indeed transport of water by the arbuscular mycorrhizal hyphae under drought conditions. Although only a small amount of water transport from the hyphal compartment was detected, the much higher hyphal density found in the root compartment than in the hyphal compartment suggests that a larger amount of water uptake by the arbuscular mycorrhizal hyphae may occur in the root compartment.

Modeling soil water movement with water uptake by roots
Wu  Jinquan  Zhang  Renduo  Gui  Shengxiang 《Plant and Soil》1999,215(1):7-17
Soil water movement with root water uptake is a key process for plant growth and transport of water and chemicals in the soil-plant system. In this study, a root water extraction model was developed to incorporate the effect of soil water deficit and plant root distributions on plant transpiration of annual crops. For several annual crops, normalized root density distribution functions were established to characterize the relative distributions of root density at different growth stages. The ratio of actual to potential cumulative transpiration was used to determine plant leaf area index under water stress from measurements of plant leaf area index at optimal soil water condition. The root water uptake model was implemented in a numerical model. The numerical model was applied to simulate soil water movement with root water uptake and simulation results were compared with field experimental data. The simulated soil matric potential, soil water content and cumulative evapotranspiration had reasonable agreement with the measured data. Potentially the numerical model implemented with the root water extraction model is a useful tool to study various problems related to flow transport with plant water uptake in variably saturated soils. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.

Restoration of degraded Mediterranean areas often requires the reintroduction of key-stone woody species but the establishment of seedlings of native species is frequently poor. This is partly due to insufficient knowledge of the ecology of these species at the seedling stage. Fast rooting and efficient water supply under water limiting conditions may be crucial to withstand summer drought and ensure establishment. However, knowledge of the relationship between root morphology and the water transport capacity of Mediterranean woody species in response to drought is still scarce. We evaluated the effect of low water availability on biomass allocation, root morphology and transpiration of a common Mediterranean shrub species, Pistacia lentiscus L. Seedlings of this species were grown in pots filled with soil under glasshouse conditions for 6 months, and irrigated either weekly (W+) or monthly (W?). Low water availability strongly reduced all fractions of biomass, and decreased relative biomass allocation belowground. Average diameter of fine roots colonising the soil was higher in W+ plants, but this resulted in only marginal effects on specific root length. Water limitation did not affect the topology of secondary roots colonising the soil. Surprisingly, the ratio of leaf area to coloniser roots surface area was higher in W? seedlings. Sapwood area was strongly correlated with leaf area, secondary roots cross-sectional area, and surface area of fine roots colonising the soil when all seedlings were pooled. In agreement with the pipe stem theory, the ratio of sapwood area to leaf area was not affected by watering regime. Plant water loss when soils were taken to field capacity was significantly correlated with leaf area, sapwood area, secondary roots cross-section area and coloniser roots surface area. Water loss at high water availability was greatly reduced in W? plants, as leaf area decreased and transpiration rates on a leaf area basis were similar in W+ and W? seedlings. P. lentiscus showed limited capacity to acclimate to low water availability by modifying biomass allocation and root morphology. Thus, parallel to what has been observed aboveground, this species can benefit from periods of high water availability by showing relatively high root growth rates, but may respond poorly to water scarcity.

Correct modeling of root water uptake partitioning over depth is an important issue in hydrological and crop growth models. Recently a physically based model to describe root water uptake was developed at single root scale and upscaled to the root system scale considering a homogeneous distribution of roots per soil layer. Root water uptake partitioning is calculated over soil layers or compartments as a function of respective soil hydraulic conditions, specifically the soil matric flux potential, root characteristics and a root system efficiency factor to compensate for within-layer root system heterogeneities. The performance of this model was tested in an experiment performed in two-compartment split-pot lysimeters with sorghum plants. The compartments were submitted to different irrigation cycles resulting in contrasting water contents over time. The root system efficiency factor was determined to be about 0.05. Release of water from roots to soil was predicted and observed on several occasions during the experiment; however, model predictions suggested root water release to occur more often and at a higher rate than observed. This may be due to not considering internal root system resistances, thus overestimating the ease with which roots can act as conductors of water. Excluding these erroneous predictions from the dataset, statistical indices show model performance to be of good quality.
