Certain genera within the Caryophyllaceae (especially Silene and Lychnis) have received a significant amount of attention with regard to the isolation and identification of ecdysteroids. However, the taxonomy of this family is difficult. Hence, the occurrence of phytoecdysteroids in members of the Caryophyllaceae is presented, and combined with new data on ecdysteroid agonist (phytoecdysteroid) and antagonist activities, in order to survey the distribution of phytoecdysteroid-containing species within this large family, and to assess the utility of phytoecdysteroids as chemotaxonomic markers. The new data presented (representing ca. 110 species) have been obtained by the application of sensitive biological/biochemical methods for the detection of ecdysteroid agonists and antagonists, using Drosophila melanogaster B(II) bioassay and ecdysteroid-specific immunoassays. In the antagonist version of the B(II) bioassay, only weak ecdysteroid antagonist activities were detected in a few of the extracts. From both new and previously available data, it was found that phytoecdysteroids were present predominantly in the Genera Lychnis, Petrocoptis, Sagina and Silene. Comparison of ecdysteroid occurrence with a molecular phylogeny for the tribe Sileneae [Taxon 44 (1995) 525] revealed close association of ecdysteroid occurrence with certain groups of this tribe. In 14 species of Silene examined, there is a reasonable, but not absolute, relationship between the presence of ecdysteroids in the seeds and in other plant parts. Where ecdysteroids are present in the plant, highest concentrations are generally present in the roots.  相似文献

Background

Anther smuts of the basidiomycetous genus Microbotryum on Caryophyllaceae are important model organisms for many biological disciplines. Members of Microbotryum are most commonly found parasitizing the anthers of host plants in the family Caryophyllaceae, however they can also be found on the anthers of members of the Dipsacaceae, Lamiaceae, Lentibulariaceae, and Portulacaceae. Additionally, some members of Microbotryum can be found infecting other organs of mainly Polygonaceae hosts. Based on ITS nrDNA sequences of members of almost all genera in Microbotryaceae, this study aims to resolve the phylogeny of the anther smuts and their relationship to the other members of the family of plant parasites. A multiple analysis strategy was used to correct for the effects of different equally possible ITS sequence alignments on the phylogenetic outcome, which appears to have been neglected in previous studies.  相似文献

A strategy for screening plants for ecdysteroid content based on the ‘positive tribe’ principle is developed and applied, for the first time, to screen the flora of European North-East Russia to identify species which accumulate ecdysteroids; 700 samples representing 411 species from 380 genera of 82 families were investigated. It is established that species with moderate to high ecdysteroid content (detectable with the Drosophila melanogaster BII cell bioassay) are not numerous (4% of all screened species). They are found in 14 families of different kinship level. Within families, ecdysteroid-containing plants form groups of closely cognate species (within certain tribes and/or genera); most ecdysteroid-containing species in this study were present in the tribe Cardueae (within the Asteraceae) and in the tribe Lychnideae (within the Caryophyllaceae). Radioimmunoassay, using an ecdysteroid-specific antiserum, allowed us to detect trace amounts of phytoecdysteroids (0.1–0.5 μg ecdysone equivalents/g plant matter) below the threshold detectable by the insect ecdysteroid receptor-based bioassay. It was found that such trace amounts of ecdysteroids are typical of many of the other plant species tested. We propose that a positive response in the bioassay is an appropriate criterion for detecting species with ecdysteroid content sufficient for protecting the plant against non-adapted phytophagous insects. Analysis of the geographical distribution of ecdysteroid-containing species (as detected by the bioassay) reveals that many of them belong to the southern or polyzonal latitudinal groups. This supports the impact of ecological–geographical factors upon ecdysteroid distribution in plants.  相似文献

The sieve-element plastids of 69 species of theCaryophyllales were investigated by transmission electron microscopy. All contained the specific subtype-P3 plastids characterized by a peripheral ring of protein filaments. The presence or absence of an additional central protein crystal and their shape being either polygonal or globular as well as the average sizes of the sieve-element plastids are useful features in the characterization of some families.—Barbeuia contains sieve-element plastids that confirm its placement within thePhytolaccaceae. Lyallia differs fromHectorella by including small starch grains in their sieve-element plastids, which otherwise by their globular crystals negate a closer connection to theCaryophyllaceae. The lack of a central protein crystal in its form-P3fs plastids placesMicrotea best within theChenopodiaceae. Sarcobatus, a so far uncontested member of theChenopodiaceae, contains form-P3cf plastids, i.e., including a central crystal not found elsewhere in this family.Telephium andCorrigiola, shifted back and forth betweenMolluginaceae andCaryophyllaceae, have form-P3cf(s) plastids with a polygonal crystal which favor their placement within theCaryophyllaceae.  相似文献

The family Caryophyllaceae includes world-wide 86 genera and approximately 2100 species. Greece is one of its most important centres of diversity and endemism. A total of 428 Caryophyllaceae taxa are distributed in Greece, 161 of them being endemic to the Greek political territory. The endemic element represents approximately 5% of the global diversity of the family at the species level. The aim of this paper is to discuss the distribution patterns of the Greek endemic Caryophyllaceae, as well as those with a limited distribution range to the neighbouring areas of the Balkans and Anatolia, on the basis of the phytogeographical regions of Greece in order to identify the important regions for their conservation. The majority of the Greek endemic Caryophyllaceae (64.6%) are distributed in only one single phytogeographical region, or even a smaller area indicating the extremely restricted distribution ranges of the endemic plants in Greece. Actually 83 Greek endemic Caryophyllaceae can be grouped on cytotaxonomic criteria. Most of them belong to the category of schizoendemics (91.6%), indicating that the endemism of Caryophyllaceae in Greece has mainly originated in an active way. Cluster analysis has been used to classify the phytogeographical regions according to their floristic similarities. Two iterative complementarity methods were used to evaluate the importance of each phytogeographical region in the conservation of the endemic Caryophyllaceae in Greece. Peloponnisos, Kriti-Karpathos and Sterea Ellas are the most important phytogeographical regions in this respect, followed by North Central and North East. When adding the Balkan-Aegean-Anatolian endemics to the analysis, Peloponnisos, North Central, Kriti-Karpathos, North East and Eastern Aegean result as the most important areas. In every case, an elevated number of sites are required for the conservation of Caryophyllaceae in Greece, reflecting the great dissimilarities in the floristic composition of the various phytogeographical regions. The results provided by the different methods are compared. A catalogue of the Greek endemic Caryophyllaceae is appended.  相似文献

Seeds of 30 species of Moehringia and 12 representatives of the Caryophyllaceae were examined with the Scanning Electron Microscope. High diversity was found in seed coat micromorphology, and a number of novel morphological features have been observed. Comparison with other representatives of the Caryophyllaceae has provided new insight into the potential taxonomic value of discrete morphological characters. Though many characters appear informative within Moehringia, they are affected by a high level of homoplasy when considered in a wider phylogenetic context. Smooth seed is the common condition in Moehringia, except for Eastern Balkan and Iberian species that maintain a secondary ornamentation of the testa cells resembling the plesiomorphic Caryophyllaceae-type. Five types of strophioles were recognized, in accordance with previous literature. Among these, the strophiole of the Iberian species appears very distinctive and a proper strophiole could not be verified in M. glochidisperma and M. fontqueri.  相似文献

CHINNAPPA, C. C, GIFFORD, D. J. & RAMAMORRTHY, J., 1992. Studies on the Stellaria longipes complex (Caryophyllaceae): relationships among the species based on seed protein profiles. The protein profiles of nine genera of the family Caryophyllaceae show distinct patterns. Within the genus Stellaria , six species were studied. The four North American species show more or less similar profiles, while the two European species have quite different patterns. There are some indications to suggest that the polyploid species, 5. longipes , is closely related to diploid S. longifolia and S. porsildii. The seed protein profiles of these species support the view that 5. longipes might have originated from hybridization between the two diploid species.  相似文献

Bean geese (Anser fabalis) and Greater white-fronted geese (Anser albifrons) are the dominant wintering waterfowl in South Korea. Although they are commonly observed in estuaries and rice fields during the winter, the diet composition of the geese during the winter has rarely been studied. In this study, we provide the results from preliminary analyses on the diet of these two geese species overwintering in Daebu Island of South Korea. We used a total of 13 fecal samples from Bean geese (n?=?4) and Greater white-fronted geese (n?=?9), and performed a BLAST search for the sequences obtained from 87 clones (n?=?36 for Bean geese and n?=?51 for Greater white-fronted geese). The diet of Bean geese consisted of five families of plants: Caryophyllaceae (75.0%), Poaceae (13.9%), Asteraceae (5.5%), Polygonaceae (2.8%) and Cucurbitacea (2.8%). On the other hand, the diet of Greater white-fronted geese consisted of 6 families of plants: Poaceae (74.5%), Caryophyllaceae (9.8%), Solanacea (5.9%), Portulacaceae (3.9%), Lamiaceae (3.9%) and Brassicaceae (2.0%). We found that plants of the rice family (Poaceae) are important in the diet of wintering geese, especially for Greater white-fronted geese. This knowledge can be used to establish conservation strategies of the geese overwintering in South Korea.  相似文献

Phytoecdysteroids are steroidal compounds produced by various plants that disrupt growth and development of insects eating them. They exhibit an insecticidal activity on a number of insect pests such as Plodia interpunctella (Hübner) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae). In this study, we further evaluated whether phytoecdysteroids deter larvae of this species from feeding, by using four phytoecdysteroid molecules, commonly occurring in plants: 20‐hydroxyecdysone (20E), ponasterone A (PonA), polypodine B (PolB), and makisterone A (MakA). Fourth instar P. interpunctella avoided contact with food pellets treated with these phytoecdysteroids in a dose‐dependent way (2–30 mm ). In order to test whether this avoidance was mediated by taste sensitivity, we recorded the responses of taste neurons located in the lateral and medial sensilla styloconica of the galea. At least one neuron responded to each of these compounds in both sensilla. The neuron located in the medial sensillum had a detection threshold of 10?6 m for PonA, 10?4 m for 20E and PolB, and 10?3 m for MakA. The lateral sensillum neuron responded with less intensity and its detection threshold was 10 times higher than that of the medial sensillum neuron. These results indicate that phytoecdysteroids are detected as deterrent stimuli by P. interpunctella larvae and that small structural differences significantly affect their biological activity.  相似文献

Roots ofHectorella caespitosa Hook. f. were induced to produce a red pigment which was shown to be a betalain and not an anthocyanin. These data indicate thatHectorella belongs to theChenopodiineae, the betalain suborder of theCentrospermae, and excludes alignment with the anthocyanin family theCaryophyllaceae.  相似文献

Ribosomal RNA homologies and the thermal stabilities of rRNA/DNA hybrids among ten species of the Centrospermae (including three from the family Caryophyllaceae and seven from five betalain-producing families), three other angiosperms, and one fern, suggest that the betalain-producing families are phylogenetically closer to each other than to the anthocyanin-producing families which are examined.  相似文献

A number of plants produce significant amounts of phytoecdysteroids that can disrupt the hormonal levels of insects feeding upon them. Insects equipped with taste receptors sensitive to phytoecdysteroids are able to avoid such plants. How common is this strategy? By recording from the lateral and medial sensilla styloconica in two polyphagous species (Ostrinia nubilalis and Spodoptera littoralis) and in a monophagous species (Bombyx mori), we tested whether the receptors could detect three commonly occurring phytoecdysteroids 20-hydroxyecdysone (20E), ponasterone A (ponA) and ecdysone (E). In B. mori, 20E and ponA elicited dose-dependent responses with a threshold of 1 &mgr;M only in the medial sensilla. In O. nubilalis, 20E, E and ponA elicited responses at threshold of 1 &mgr;M in both sensilla. In S. littoralis, 20E elicited responses with a threshold of 10 &mgr;M in both sensilla. By means of behavioural choice tests, we show that 20E is an effective feeding deterrent for O. nubilalis and S. littoralis first instar larvae. This suggests that the perception of phytoecdysteroids is more common among phytophagous lepidoptera than previously thought, although their toxicity or antifeedancy varies between species.  相似文献

The androecium of the Caryophyllaceae is varied, ranging from a two-whorled condition to a single stamen. A number of species belonging to the three subfamilies, Caryophyl-loideae, Alsinoideae and Paronychioideae have been studied ontogenetically with the SEM to understand their peculiar androecial development in the broader context of the Caryophyllales alliance. Although patterns of initiation are highly variable among species, there are three ontogenetic modes of stamen initiation: all stamens simultaneous within a whorl, the antepetalous stamens simultaneous and the antesepalous sequentially with a reversed direction, or both whorls sequentially with or without a reversed direction. The most common floral (ontogenetic) sequence of the Caryophyllaceae runs as follows: five sepals (in a 2/5 sequence), the stamens in front of the three inner sepals successively, stamens opposite the two outermost sepals, five antepetalous stamens (simultaneously or in a reversed spiral superimposed on the spiral of the antesepalous stamens), five outer sterile (petaloid) organs arising before, simultaneously or after the antesepalous stamens, often by the division of common primordia. A comparison with the floral configurations of the Phytolaccaceae and Molluginaceae indicates that the outer petaline whorl of the Caryophyllaceae corresponds positionally to the alternisepalous stamens of somePhytolacca, such asP. dodecandra. The difference withP. dodecandra lies in the fact that an extra inner or outer whorl is formed in the Caryophyl-laceae, in alternation with the sepals. A comparable arrangement exists in the Molluginaceae, though the initiation of stamens is centrifugal. A comparison of floral ontogenies and the presence of reduction series in the Caryophyllaceae support the idea that the pentamerous arrangement is derived from a trimerous prototype. Petals correspond to sterillized stamens and are comparable to two stamen pairs opposite the outer sepals and a single stamen alternating with the third and fifth sepals. Petals are often in a state of reduction; they may be confused with staminodes and they often arise from common stamenpetal primordia. The antesepalous stamen whorl represents an amalgamation of two whorls: initiation is reversed with the stamens opposite the fourth and fifth formed sepals arising before the other, while the stamens opposite the first and second formed sepals are frequently reduced or lost. Reductive trends are correlated with the mode of initiation of the androecium, as well as changes in the number of carpels, and affect the antesepalous and antepetalous whorls in different proportions. It is concluded that the androecium of the Caryophyllaceae is pseudodiplos-temonous and is not comparable to diplostemonous forms in the Dilleniidae and Rosidae. The basic floral formula of Caryophyllaceae is as follows: sepals 5—petals 5 (sterile stamens)—antesepalous stamens 3+2—antepetalous stamens 5 gynoecium 5.  相似文献

Cyclic peptides (CPs) are produced in a very wide range of taxa. Their biosynthesis generally involves either non‐ribosomal peptide synthases or ribosome‐dependent production of precursor peptides. Plants within the Caryophyllaceae and certain other families produce CPs which generally consist of 5–9 proteinogenic amino acids. The biological roles for these CPs in the plant are not very clear, but many of them have activity in mammalian systems. There is currently very little known about the biosynthesis of CPs in the Caryophyllaceae. A collection of expressed sequence tags from developing seeds of Saponaria vaccaria was investigated for information about CP biosynthesis. This revealed genes that appeared to encode CP precursors which are subsequently cyclized to mature CPs. This was tested and confirmed by the expression of a cDNA encoding a putative precursor of the CP segetalin A in transformed S. vaccaria roots. Similarly, extracts of developing S. vaccaria seeds were shown to catalyze the production of segetalin A from the same putative (synthetic) precursor. Moreover, the presence in S. vaccaria seeds of two segetalins, J [cyclo(FGTHGLPAP)] and K [cyclo(GRVKA)], which was predicted by sequence analysis, was confirmed by liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry. Sequence analysis also predicts the presence of similar CP precursor genes in Dianthus caryophyllus and Citrus spp. The data support the ribosome‐dependent biosynthesis of Caryophyllaceae‐like CPs in the Caryophyllaceae and Rutaceae.  相似文献

A new genus and species (Caryophylloflora paleogenica genus and species nova G. J. Jord. & Macphail) are proposed for a fossil inflorescence found in Middle-Late Eocene sediments at Locharbour, northeastern Tasmania, Australia. A parsimony analysis of 75 extant species of the order Caryophyllales and five outgroups placed the fossil within Caryophyllaceae, either subfamily Alsinoideae or Caryophylloideae. The analysis used molecular (rbcL and/or matK), morphological, and anatomical data for the extant species and morphological data for the fossil. Tests on extant species imply that the placement of the fossil should be convincing. The fossil appears to be of a lineage distinct from any extant Australian Caryophyllaceae. In situ pollen are consistent with the form species, Periporopollenites polyoratus. This relatively simple pollen type first appears in Australia and New Zealand in the Late Cretaceous, the oldest known record of the Caryophyllaceae. The last appearance of P. polyoratus in Australia is in the Oligocene, and extant Australian members of the Caryophyllaceae are best interpreted as having evolved from species that dispersed from elsewhere during the Neogene or Quaternary.  相似文献

Caryophyllaceae is a principally holarctic family including around 2200 species often classified into the three subfamilies Alsinoideae, Caryophylloideae, and Paronychioideae. Complex and possibly homoplasious morphological characters within the family make taxa difficult to delimit and diagnose. To explore part of the morphological evolution within the family, we investigated the phylogeny of the Caryophyllaceae by means of analyzing plastid and nuclear sequence data with parsimony and Bayesian methods. We describe a mode of tracing a stable phylogenetic signal in ITS sequences, and a significant common signal is shared with the plastid data. Parsimony and Bayesian analyses yield some differences in tree resolution. None of the subfamilies appear monophyletic, but the monophyly of the Caryophylloideae is not contradicted. Alsinoideae are paraphyletic, with Arenaria subg. Eremogone and Minuartia subg. Spergella more closely related to the Caryophylloideae. There is strong support for the inclusion of Spergula-Spergularia in an Alsinoideae-Caryophylloideae clade. Putative synapomorphies for these groupings are twice as many stamens as number of sepals and a caryophyllad-type of embryogeny. Paronychioideae form a basal grade, where tribe Corrigioleae are sister to the rest of the family. Free styles and capsules with simple teeth are possibly plesiomorphic for the family.  相似文献
