Rice straw was fermented with Cellulomonas sp. and Alcaligenes faecalis. Microbial cells and undigested residue, as well as chemically treated (NaOH or NH4OH) and untreated straws, were analyzed for nutrient composition and in vitro digestibility. In a typical fermentation, 75% of the rice straw substrate was digested, and 18.6% of the total substrate weight that disappeared was recovered as microbial protein. The microbial cell fraction was 37% protein and 5% crude fiber; the residue was 12% protein and 45% crude fiber. The microbial protein amino acid profile was similar to alfalfa, except for less cysteine. The microbial cells had more thiamine and less niacin than Torula yeast. In vitro digestibility of the microbial protein was 41.2 to 55%; that of cellulose was 52%.  相似文献

Wheat, barley and oat straws were treated by steam explosion (SE) and then washed with 50g/l NaOH solution. The SE treatment was optimized at batch scale on the basis of carbohydrate recovery. Stocks of fodder (300kg) were produced at 198 degrees C for 2.5min by a continuous reactor and used for in vivo digestibility tests carried out on sheep. The flow-sheet and the mass balances were obtained for the entire process. For the three straws, the water consumption has been 7.3kg/kg of straw. To delignify and improve the digestibility of the straws, 20g of NaOH/kg straw was used. The yield of fodder, lignin and hemicellulose is dependant on the nature of the starting straw. Delignified fodder (insoluble fraction) can be produced with a yield of 0.64, 0.59, 0.55, respectively, from wheat, barley and oat straw. SE improved the digestibility of the straw by 25%; alkaline washing further increased it by 9%. Balanced rations containing, on a DM basis, 1/4 of treated straw, had digestibility coefficients similar to those of commercial rations based on alfalfa.  相似文献

Two experiments were made to investigate the intake of cattle when offered straw and silage mixtures. In a trial of changeover design 12 Friesian castrates (steers) were offered five diets. These were grass silage alone or mixed with untreated or NaOH treated straw supplying 20 or 40% of the total dry matter. The addition of 20% straw to the diet significantly reduced dry matter intake, and a further reduction occurred at 40%. Treating the straw with NaOh did not increase dry matter intake but led to an associated increase in digestible organic matter intake.Twelve Ayrshire heifers were given four diets in a trial of changeover design. The diets were silage only and three straw : silage mixtures in which straw provided 40% of the dry matter. The straws were untreated, NaOH treated or KOH treated. Untreated straw markedly depressed dry matter intake; NaOH raised the digestibility of straw and thus increased digestible organic matter intake significantly. The dry matter intake of the heifers was much greater than anticipated with the KOH treated straw : silage mixture and was similar to that achieved with silage only.  相似文献

Felids are adapted to eat whole prey, but in North American zoos are usually fed processed diets based on muscle meat. We analyzed proximate nutrient composition and digestibility by ocelots of a commercial processed diet and whole animals of five species. The processed diet did not differ significantly from the whole animals in proximate composition, although it was at one end of the range of results for all nutrients. Domestic chicks were significantly lower than all other dietary items tested in digestibility of energy and fat, and lower than rabbits and quail in digestibility of dry matter. There were no other significant differences. These results suggest that the commercial diet tested provides an appropriate nutritional environment for ocelots with respect to proximate constituents. Studies of vitamin and mineral composition and digestibility and comparisons to wild prey species should be conducted to permit a full evaluation. Corn stover was pretreated with FeCl3 to remove almost all of the hemicellulose present and then hydrolyzed with cellulase and β-glucosidase to produce glucose. Enzymatic hydrolysis of corn stover that had been pretreated with FeCl3 at 160 °C for 20 min resulted in an optimum yield of 98.0%. This yield was significantly higher than that of untreated corn stover (22.8%). FeCl3 pretreatment apparently damaged the surface of corn stover and significantly increased the enzymatic digestibility, as evidenced by SEM and XRD analysis data. FTIR analysis indicated that FeCl3 pretreatment could disrupt almost all the ether linkages and some ester linkages between lignin and carbohydrates but had no effect on delignification. The FeCl3 pretreatment technique, as a novel pretreatment method, enhances enzymatic hydrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass by destructing chemical composition and altering structural features.  相似文献

The aim of this meta-analysis was to compare feed intake, milk production, milk composition and organic matter (OM) digestibility in dairy cows fed different grass and legume species. Data from the literature was collected and different data sets were made to compare families (grasses v. legumes, Data set 1), different legume species and grass family (Data set 2), and different grass and legume species (Data set 3+4). The first three data sets included diets where single species or family were fed as the sole forage, whereas the approach in the last data set differed by taking the proportion of single species in the forage part into account allowing diets consisting of both grasses and legumes to be included. The grass species included were perennial ryegrass, annual ryegrass, orchardgrass, timothy, meadow fescue, tall fescue and festulolium, and the legume species included were white clover, red clover, lucerne and birdsfoot trefoil. Overall, dry matter intake (DMI) and milk production were 1.3 and 1.6 kg/day higher, respectively, whereas milk protein and milk fat concentration were 0.5 and 1.4 g/kg lower, respectively, for legume-based diets compared with grass-based diets. When comparing individual legume species with grasses, only red clover resulted in a lower milk protein concentration than grasses. Cows fed white clover and birdsfoot trefoil yielded more milk than cows fed red clover and lucerne, probably caused by a higher OM digestibility of white clover and activity of condensed tannins in birdsfoot trefoil. None of the included grass species differed in DMI, milk production, milk composition or OM digestibility, indicating that different grass species have the same value for milk production, if OM digestibility is comparable. However, the comparison of different grass species relied on few observations, indicating that knowledge regarding feed intake and milk production potential of different grass species is scarce in the literature. In conclusion, different species within family similar in OM digestibility resulted in comparable DMI and milk production, but legumes increased both DMI and milk yield compared with grasses.  相似文献

This study tested the effect of calcium oxide (CaO), sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and NaOH plus hydrogen peroxide (H2O2; AHP) on cell wall composition, digestion and fermentation of wheat straw (straw) in sheep. Treated straws were prepared by mixing straw either with water followed by dusting with CaO at 160 g kg−1 DM or with a NaOH solution alone at 3 l kg−1 DM to supply 80 g NaOH kg−1 DM (Na) or pre-soaked with Na exactly as in the previous treatment for 27 h followed by mixing with 130 g H2O2 kg−1 DM (AHP) for 6 h. After 14 days of storage, the treated straws and an untreated straw (U) were fed automatically every 2 h to four individually housed sheep together with a supplement in a 4×4 latin square experiment. Each kilogram supplement DM contained 422 g CP and 10.8 MJ ME. NDF (p<0.001) and hemicellulose (p<0.01) contents were significantly reduced whereas cellulose was increased (p<0.001) in treated compared to untreated straw. ADL was reduced in Ca (p<0.05) but increased (p<0.05) in Na and AHP compared with U. The rumen and total tract digestibility were significantly (p<0.001) greater in sheep fed treated compared with untreated straw. Significant differences (p<0.05) between treatments for pH, NH3 and VFA were also observed. All treatments improved the nutritive value of straws compared with untreated through modification of cell wall with a subsequent increase in digestibility by sheep. Although the digestibility for Ca was lower than that for Na despite reduction in cell wall, its use to treat straws may be more safe and cost effective than Na. AHP was the most effective and could also improve the energy value of other low quality forages for ruminants. However, the need of AHP for a large amount of NaOH to achieve highly alkaline pH limits its farm scale application. Therefore, further studies should either consider reducing the amount of NaOH or finding alternative alkalis that are cost effective and user-friendly.  相似文献

Summary Wheat straw (WS) was treated with 5% sodium hydroxide, ozone and 5% sulfur dioxide at 70°C for 72 h, and the effect of treatments on monosaccharide composition and in vitro degradability by rumen microorganisms was studied. The major sugars, glucose and xylose, comprising about 90% of the total monosaccharides in the untreated WS were mainly confined to the cell walls. SO2 exerted the greatest solubilizing effect, followed by ozone and NaOH; the respective values for the solubilized cell wall polysaccharides were: 26, 12 and 4.4%. One third of the total phenolics was oxidized by ozone, whereas, SO2 exerted mostly a solubilizing effect on this fraction, converting 75% of it into soluble phenolics. In the NaOH treated WS 41% of the total phenolics were soluble, as compared to 22% in the untreated. The in vitro digestibility of monosaccharides in the untreated WS were initially high: 50% and 58% for xylose and glucose, respectively and 63% to 80% for the minor sugars. The SO2 treatment resulted in an overall increase in digestibility of monosaccharides with values lying in the range of 90%. Sodium hydroxide was more efficient than ozone in enhancing the degradability of xylan and total sugars. The digestibility of cell wall sugars was increased from 52.4% to 84.4%, 63.4% and 72.3% by SO2, O3 and NaOH treatments respectively. Based on the present findings, it appears that wheat straw cell wall components are more sensitive to hydrolytic than to oxidative processes aimed at increasing its degradability by rumen microorganisms. SO2 exerted on WS a multi-effect which was particularly suitable for increasing the digestibility of monosaccharides.  相似文献

The study was undertaken to investigate the effectiveness of anhydrous NH3, aqueous NH4OH and urea + urease as sources of ammonia for treating maize stover, rice and wheat straws at graded treatment rates of 0, 25 and 50 g NH3/kg DM of roughage and at two moisture levels of 20 and 40% in all combinations in improving dry matter digestibility in vitro (IVDMD), organic matter digestibility in vitro (IVOMD) and crude protein (CP) contents when allowed to react for 15 or 30 days.Rate of ammonia was the most important factor in enhancing IVDMD, IVOMD and CP. Moisture level and days of reaction had a less important influence on the parameters measured. While anhydrous NH3 was most effective in improving IVDMD and IVOMD of maize stover, aqueous NH4OH had a similar effect in increasing IVDMD and IVOMD of rice and wheat straws and urea + urease was the least effective but promising. Highest responses in IVDMD and IVOMD were obtained with rice straw, followed by wheat straw and, lastly, maize stover. In a second experiment maize stover which was treated with aqueous NH4OH at 0, 25 and 50 g NH3/kg DM at two moisture levels of 20 and 40% was given to Black Headed Persian rams. Digestibility of DM and OM and voluntary feed intake were improved significantly (P < 0.01) by ammonia treatment and there was also a significant (P < 0.01) response to increasing moisture levels.  相似文献

Methods are presented which evaluate the efficiency of delignification in alkali-treated grass straws. Saponified lignin is soluble in neutral detergent solution and in phosphate buffer, and can be assayed by ultraviolet spectrophotometry of the solutions. Extraction of free phenolic material by means of neutral detergent or phosphate buffer is followed by determination of a saponification number (titratable groups) on the residue. Measurements of phenolic matter in the sodium hydroxide extract of the fibre residue allow assay of the residual, bound lignin in treated straws. The bound lignin is negatively correlated with digestibility of alkali-treated straw. The results provide further evidence that the negative effect of lignin upon digestibility of forages depends on covalent linkage between lignin and the carbohydrate residues that it protects.  相似文献

Effect of high-pressure steam (5, 7 and 9 kg cm?2 for 30 and 60 min) on chemical composition and digestibility in vitro of sugarcane bagasse, paddy straw and sorghum straw was studied. The treatment brought about significant falls in the neutral detergent fibre (NDF), specifically the hemicellulose content, and in pH. Soluble carbohydrates and volatile acids (VA) increased with treatment, while acid detergent fibre (ADF) remained constant. The increments in true dry-matter digestibility in vitro (IVTDMD) compared to untreated were 23–64% (sugarcane bagasse), 19–36% (paddy straw) and 31–42% (sorghum straw) with increasing steam pressures and period. The digestibility of cell-wall constituents (CWC) improved with steam treatment in all three roughages. The dry-matter losses resulting from the treatment were 0.9–20%, 17–39% and 1–22% for sugarcane bagasse, paddy straw and sorghum straw, respectively.  相似文献

Subterranean rodents have high energy requirements when they are excavating their burrows. This study investigates the energy available to, and the efficiency with which it can be extracted by, four species of bathyergid mole-rats fed natural diets ranging from the underground storage organs of geophytes to grass roots and leaves.
The digestibility coefficients of geophytes ranged from 53% for the fibrous tuber of the gemsbok cucumber to 95–7% for corms and bulbs. One species, Bathyergus suillus whose diet consists of over 80% grass, had a digestibility coefficient of 87% on an all grass diet.
All species had similar coefficients of digestibility of > 90% when fed on a uniform diet of sweet potato.
Bulbs and corms had a low fibre content (3–3–4%), high calorific value (15–16kJ/g) and high digestibility coefficients (95–7–96%) and on this diet the mole-rats maintained their body mass. Food of lower digestibility tended to have a high fibre content (8–2–45%) and, with the exception of B. suillus , although the mole-rats consumed a greater quantity of food, they lost mass. The sweet potato had a low fibre content (4–1 %) but was energetically very similar to bulbs and corms (15–5 kJ/g).
Geophytes which have low fibre contents are generally small (1–20 g), whereas geophytes with high fibre contents are much larger (30–2000 g) and often occur in more arid zones.  相似文献

Ammonia-treated or untreated barley straw supplemented with urea was given as the only feed to two groups of Friesian heifers weighing approximately 550 kg. The digestibility of dry matter (DM) was 58.8 and 49.9%, daily feed intake was 5.88 and 3.87 kg and daily liveweight change was +324 and -447 g for the ammonia-treated and control barley straw diets, respectively.Anhydrous or aqueous ammonia (NH3) was injected into large round straw bales covered with plastic. The rates of degradation of barley straw in nylon bags and digestibility in vivo were the same for both ammonia treatments. The distribution of N in the bales was also similar and uniform with both treatments. No differences were recorded in the rate of degradation in nylon bags if the plastic was removed 2 or 8 weeks after treatment.Anhydrous or aqueous ammonia or isonitrogenous amounts of urea were injected into large round bags containing whole-crop barley or oats collected with a forage harvester. The digestibility of starch by steers was about 92% for ammonia-treated samples and 78% for the urea-treated samples. Urea and ammonia efficiently preserved the whole-crop materials but untreated control samples and samples treated with NaOH deteriorated during storage.  相似文献

Twelve white-rot fungi were grown in solid-state culture on lemon grass (Cymbopogon citratus) and citronella (Cymbopogon winterianus) bagasse. The two lignocellulosic substrates had 11% permanganate lignin and a holocellulose fraction of 58%. After 5 to 6 weeks at 20°C, nine fungi produced a solid residue from lemon grass with a higher in vitro dry matter enzyme digestibility than the original bagasse; seven did the same for citronella. The best fungus for both substrates was Bondarzewia berkeleyi; it increased the in vitro dry matter enzyme digestibility to 22 and 24% for lemon grass and citronella, respectively. The increases were correlated with weight loss and lignin loss. All fungi decreased lignin contents: 36% of the original value for lemon grass and 28% for citronella. Practically all fungi showed a preference for hemicellulose over cellulose.  相似文献

Abstract:In contrast to virtually all other species of ruminants, reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) eat substantial amounts of lichens in winter. Several different species of lichens are eaten and most are highly palatable. The chemical composition and the in vitro digestibility of six species of terricolous lichens commonly eaten by reindeer were measured. Ruminal inoculum was obtained in winter from six free-ranging reindeer that had been grazing on natural pastures in northern Norway. Analysis of the plant parts recovered from their rumens confirmed that the animals had been eating a mixed diet that included both lichens and vascular plants. The chemical composition and the in vitro digestibility of the different species of lichens varied considerably between species and genera. Cetraria islandica, C. nivalis andCladonia arbuscula were highly digestible [69–77% dry matter (DM)], Stereocaulon paschale was poorly digestible (43% DM), whereas Cladonia stellaris and C. gracilis had an intermediate digestibility (56–57% DM). Mixing Cladonia stellaris with vascular plants (50:50) had no effect on the in vitro digestibility of the combined substrates. The in vitro digestibility of Cladonia stellaris in inoculum from two captive reindeer which had had no access to lichens was very low (10% DM). This shows that the source of inoculum used for digestibility trials has a major effect on the apparent digestibility of the substrates. Evidently, the extent to which reindeer are able to utilize lichens depends on the species that are selected and on what the animals have been eating recently.  相似文献

Long-Term Effects of Reclamation Treatments on Plant Succession in Iceland   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
The long‐term effects (20–45 years) of reclamation treatments on plant succession are examined at two localities in Iceland that were fertilized and seeded from 1954 to 1979 with perennial grasses or annual grasses, or left untreated. The areas that underwent reclamation treatments had significantly higher total plant cover (7–100%) than the untreated control plots (<5%), and floristic composition was usually significantly different between treated and untreated plots. Dwarf‐shrubs (Calluna vulgaris and Empetrum nigrum), bryophytes, biological soil crust, grasses, and shrubs characterized the vegetation in the treated plots, but low‐growing herbs that have negligible effects on the environment, such as Cardaminopsis petraea and Minuartia rubella, and grasses characterized the control plots. The seeded grass species had declined (<10%, the perennials) or disappeared (the annuals) but acted as nurse species that facilitated the colonization of native plants. It seems that by seeding, some factors that limit plant colonization were overcome. Soil nutrients, vegetation cover, litter, and biological soil crust were greater in the treated areas than the control plots. This may have enhanced colonization through an increase in soil stability and fertility, increased availability of safe microsites, increased moisture, and the capture of wind‐blown seeds. This study demonstrates the importance of looking at the long‐term effects of reclamation treatments to understand their impact on vegetation succession.  相似文献

Grass silage is typically fed to dairy cows in temperate regions. However, in vivo information on methane (CH4) emission from grass silage of varying quality is limited. We evaluated the effect of two rates of nitrogen (N) fertilisation of grassland (low fertilisation (LF), 65 kg of N/ha; and high fertilisation (HF), 150 kg of N/ha) and of three stages of maturity of grass at cutting: early maturity (EM; 28 days of regrowth), mid maturity (MM; 41 days of regrowth) and late maturity (LM; 62 days of regrowth) on CH4 production by lactating dairy cows. In a randomised block design, 54 lactating Holstein–Friesian dairy cows (168±11 days in milk; mean±standard error of mean) received grass silage (mainly ryegrass) and compound feed at 80 : 20 on dry matter basis. Cows were adapted to the diet for 12 days and CH4 production was measured in climate respiration chambers for 5 days. Dry matter intake (DMI; 14.9±0.56 kg/day) decreased with increasing N fertilisation and grass maturity. Production of fat- and protein-corrected milk (FPCM; 24.0±1.57 kg/day) decreased with advancing grass maturity but was not affected by N fertilisation. Apparent total-tract feed digestibility decreased with advancing grass maturity but was unaffected by N fertilisation except for an increase and decrease in N and fat digestibility with increasing N fertilisation, respectively. Total CH4 production per cow (347±13.6 g/day) decreased with increasing N fertilisation by 4% and grass maturity by 6%. The smaller CH4 production with advancing grass maturity was offset by a smaller FPCM and lower feed digestibility. As a result, with advancing grass maturity CH4 emission intensity increased per units of FPCM (15.0±1.00 g CH4/kg) by 31% and digestible organic matter intake (33.1±0.78 g CH4/kg) by 15%. In addition, emission intensity increased per units of DMI (23.5±0.43 g CH4/kg) by 7% and gross energy intake (7.0±0.14% CH4) by 9%, implying an increased loss of dietary energy with advancing grass maturity. Rate of N fertilisation had no effect on CH4 emissions per units of FPCM, DMI and gross energy intake. These results suggest that despite a lower absolute daily CH4 production with a higher N fertilisation rate, CH4 emission intensity remains unchanged. A significant reduction of CH4 emission intensity can be achieved by feeding dairy cows silage of grass harvested at an earlier stage of maturity.  相似文献

Sand shinnery oak (Quercus havardii) communities are a unique component of grassland bird habitat in eastern New Mexico and have been impacted by human activities for decades. These communities are frequently managed with livestock grazing and herbicide application for shrub control, strategies that potentially can be used to restore the historical shrub–grass composition of this plant community. During spring migration and the breeding seasons of 2004 and 2005, we compared density and community structure of grassland bird species among four combinations of tebuthiuron application and grazing treatments that were being evaluated for restoration of shinnery oak communities. We performed biweekly point transects on sixteen 65‐ha study plots in these communities. Density of all avian species combined did not differ between grazed and ungrazed plots. Tebuthiuron‐treated plots had a 40% higher average density for combined species than untreated plots. There was a 41% higher average density of all species during spring 2005 than 2004, but density was similar during the breeding season of both years. These trends were predominantly influenced by densities of migratory Cassin’s Sparrow (Aimophila cassinii), which were greater in tebuthiuron‐treated plots in both years. Densities of resident Meadowlarks (Sturnella spp.) exhibited little response to tebuthiuron or grazing treatments. Avian species richness, evenness, and diversity were only minimally affected by the tebuthiuron and grazing treatments. This study occurred over a period of highly variable precipitation, so future assessments, spanning longer wet–dry cycles and maturing plant communities, may be necessary to completely determine avian response to these restoration efforts.  相似文献

Sublethal effects of an azadirachtin-based botanical insecticide (commercial product NeemAzal-T/S) on behaviour, life history traits and population growth of one commercial (Dutch strain, D) and two Serbian populations (Bujanovac, B; Negotin, N) of Encarsia formosa Gahan were evaluated in laboratory bioassays. In a two-choice test, parasitoids from all tested populations preferred to parasitise the untreated whitefly nymphs over those treated with 50, 25, 12.5, 6.25 and 3.12?mg/l of azadirachtin. All concentrations caused significant deterrent effects after 24?h, and the following deterrence indices were calculated: 9.7–60.9% (B), 5.5–57.5% (N) and 12.9–63.5% (D). The longevity of adults exposed for 48?h to residues of the botanical insecticide (applied at LC50) was shorter (1.5–1.7 days) than that of control wasps. Both daily and total parasitism were significantly reduced (by 41.7, 48.3 and 60.1% for N, D and B, respectively) compared to control, as well as adult emergence in the F1 generation. The instantaneous rate of increase (ri) of surviving adults was also significantly reduced (by 13.2, 19. 3 and 20.5%, for populations N, B, and D, respectively). Adults from all tested populations, emerged from pupae treated with the botanical insecticide applied at LC50, showed reduced parasitism, adult emergence, and ri levels, but the reduction was significant only for adult emergence of B and ri of B and N. Juvenile development of the parasitoid in treated pupae was significantly extended, compared to control. The implications of these results on integrated control of the greenhouse whitefly are discussed.  相似文献

The effects of a combined fungicide and growth regulator treatment on the composition and dry matter digestibility of straw samples of winter wheat cultivars, Beaver, Brigadier, Hussar, Mercia, Riband, Genesis, Hunter, Spark, Cadenza and Flame, were compared. The samples were analysed for nitrogen, ash, fibre fractions and minerals. Nitrogen content of treated samples was reduced compared to the untreated control samples and in contrast the proportion of ash increased for all the treated samples. All samples were analysed by derivative thermogravimetry (DTG) to determine changes in fibre composition. Only six cultivars were analysed by chemical fractionation methods to determine changes in lignin, cellulose and hemicellulose content. The results from the two methods of fibre analysis were broadly similar. K, Ca, Mg and Na concentrations of the treated straw samples were found to be different to the untreated samples. Increase in dry matter digestibility (DMD) of treated straw was observed for all cultivars; the effects on Beaver, Brigadier, Mercia, Riband, Genesis, Hunter and Cadenza were most pronounced, but were less for Hussar, Spark and Flame. The potential impact of these changes in straw quality on organic mushroom compost preparation is briefly discussed.  相似文献
