Broiler litter was deep stacked and ensiled with water to achieved 40% moisture before being added, with or without 5% sugarcane molasses or with rumen contents, to a basal diet. The influence of stacking and ensiling of broiler litter on the numbers of Salmonella, Shigella, Proteus and total number of colony forming units (CFU) was investigated. Nutritive value of broiler litter processed by deep stacking and ensiling was evaluated in a digestibility trial. The experiment was conducted with 30 wethers allotted to five diets. A basal diet (20% corn grain, 23% wheat bran, 37% cotton seed cake, 18% wheat straw and 2% dicalcium phosphate) was given alone (1) or with broiler litter processed by deep stacking (2), ensiling (3), ensiling with 5% added molasses (4), or ensiling with rumen contents (1:1, wet basis) (5). For Diets 2–5, the ratio of basal diet to silage was 1:1, dry basis. For the digestion trial, diets were given at 20 g dry matter (DM) kg−1 body weight per day. Initial samples of broiler litter showed 2.5 × 108 CFU and Salmonella, Shigella and Proteus were present. The processes of deep stacking and ensiling were equally effective in achieving a complete elimination of all the pathogens. Apparent digestibilities of organic matter (OM) and crude protein (CP) (559.1 g kg−1 and 608.7 g kg−1 DM) were lower (P < 0.05) for diet 2 (deep stacked litter) than for the other waste-containing diets (OM: 578.7 g kg−1, 582.9 g kg−1, 594.1 g kg−1; CP: 688.6 g kg−1, 675.8 g kg−1, 709.0 g kg−1 DM, for Diets 3, 4 and 5, respectively). Among the waste-containing diets, cellulose digestibility (398.7 g kg−1 DM) was higher (P < 0.05) for Diet 5 (ensiled litter-rumen contents). The results indicate that deep stacking and ensiling are equally feasible and effective for eliminating the pathogens and processed broiler litter can be incorporated in the diet of ruminants at levels of up to 50% without any adverse effect on the health of the animals.  相似文献

In the first of two experiments barley straw was treated with a 16% solution of NaOHt dry matter (DM) and ensiled for one year. It was satisfactorily preserved, having a pH of 10 and counts of 104 mesophilic bacteria and 103 fungal propagules per g. When this straw was mixed with concentrates (50:50, DM basis) and given to sheep, DM intake and digestibility were 102 g/kg W0.75 per day and 67.3%. Comparable values for a diet based on freshly-treated straw were 88 g and 66.5%.In the second experiment, a 6-tonne batch of alkali-treated barley straw was ensiled for 2–4 months, then mixed with 40% concentrates and given to 370-kg steers for 66 days. Intake and growth rate were 10.23 and 1.08 kg/d, compared with 9.06 and 1.00 kg/d for steers given a diet based on freshly-treated straw. The latter diet was less digestible (for sheep) than the former.It is concluded that the feeding value of stored straw is as high as that of freshly-treated material.  相似文献

The effects of drying and pelletizing on the properties of broiler chicken litter, obtained from a farm in northwest Spain, were investigated. The drying and pelletizing process reduced among-batch variability in dry matter content, electrical conductivity, urea N, and K, S, Na, Fe, Cu and Cd contents, but increased among-batch variability in total N, ammonium N, nitrate N, total P and pH. N form contents in the pelletized product could be estimated with reasonable accuracy on the basis of dry matter content. Cr, Cu and Cd contents were all significantly lower in the dried pelletized product than in fresh litter, whereas Pb content was significantly higher. The dried pelletized product is of course clearly preferable to the fresh product as regards storage and handling, however, our results suggest a need to optimize the production process with the aim of reducing possible contamination during manufacture, and of minimizing variability in N form contents, P content and pH.  相似文献

Poultry excreta substantially increased the crude protein (CP) content and the calcium and phosporus content of the base bedding materials. The crude fibre (CF) content of sawdust (52.3%) was higher than that of wheat straw (38.9%) and bagasse (30.2%). Dry matter digestibility in vitro (IVDMD) of wheat straw, bagasse and sawdust poultry litters (PL) was 65.4, 64.5 and 48.1%, respectively. Green sorghum fodder when ensiled alone or with 20% wheat straw PL, sawdust PL or bagasse PL on fresh basis contained 4.67, 7.80, 10.00 and 7.55% CP, respectively. Nitrogen-free extract (NFE) content of PL silages was lower than that of the control. Apart from wheat straw PL, all silages accumulated considerable amounts of lactic acid. The total volatile fatty acids (TVFA) concentrations were similar for all silages. The addition of PL caused an increase in the proportion of ammonia nitrogen. A feeding trial with crossbred adult male cattle revealed no significant difference in dry matter (DM), CP and ether extract (EE) digestibility of wheat straw and bagasse PL silages. The CF digestibility was similar for all the silages. Sawdust PL silage, however, was significantly lower (P < 0.05) in digestibility of DM, EE and NFE compared to other PL based silages. The DCP and TDN values for the control, wheat straw, bagasse and sawdust PL silages were 2.0, 60.1; 4.3, 45.3; 6.1, 50.3 and 2.9, 41.9 kg/100 kg DM, respectively.  相似文献

Peas, the seeds of Pisum sativum, are produced usually in temperate regions but are accepted as a food source worldwide. Traditionally, nonruminant diets utilized peas which had been rejected by the food industry but specific cultivars of feed (or field) peas also have been developed for livestock use. In view of the diversity of varieties, seeding times (spring or winter-sown) and agronomic conditions during the growing season, there is a considerable range in the composition and nutritive value of peas. The seed coat (hull) represents 70 to 140 g kg−1 of the total weight and consists mainly of non-starch polysaccharides, while the major components of the dehulled pea are starch ( 450 g kg−1) and protein ( 250 g kg−1). Published energy values for the whole seed range from 12.2 to 16.6 MJ ME kg−1 DM for pigs and 10.1 to 12.8 MJ TMEN kg−1 DM for poultry. Reported analyses for crude protein vary from 156 to 325 g kg−1 DM, while content and availability of the constituent amino acids vary also with cultivar, seed type and analytical methods. Most concerns about low digestibilities relate to the sulphur amino acids and tryptophan. Potentially detrimental constituents in raw peas include anti-proteases, haemagglutinins, phytic acid and tannins although these appear negligible in Canadian peas. When analytical data are lacking, the following limits to use of peas are suggested: 100, 200 and 350 g kg−1, respectively, in pig starter, grower and finisher diets; 200 g kg−1 in broiler, 250 g kg−1 in turkey and 300 g kg−1 in layer diets.  相似文献

The chemical composition of exocarp and mesocarp of Prunus amygdalus Batsch (almond hulls) was studied for five years. Digestibility trials on whether lambs were carried out over two years with different samples of almond hulls in order to study the nutritive value (digestibility and intake) according to the effect of supplementary nitrogen (Trial I) and presentation form, ground or coarse (Trial II).The increase in nitrogen content of the diet had a positive effect (P ≤ 0.01) on intake. Grinding had a negative influence (P ≤ 0.01) on digestibility, but did not modify the intake of almond hulls. The digestibility of organic matter of coarse almond hulls was 63.3 (Trial I) and 66.7% (Trial II). The concentration of digestible energy (DE) was estimated at 12.04 MJ/kg DM.  相似文献

The present study included four successive experiments to determine the chemical composition of the manures and the effects of including varying levels of poultry manure in sheep rations on nutrients digestibility, nitrogen balance and the possible adaptation to the experimental diets as the experimental period was prolonged. Four different poultry wastes were used. These wastes were: pure layer droppings, HELWAN (Experiment I); pure layer droppings, SAKHA (Experiment II); layer litter (Experiment III); and broiler litter (Experiment IV). Three levels of each waste (0, low and high) were tested in the rations of six mature Ossimi fat-tailed rams (two animals for each treatment).Results showed a wide variation in ash and crude protein contents of the different wastes. Layer droppings (HELWAN) contained the highest ash percentage (43·9), while broiler litter contained the lowest (18·8). For crude protein content, broiler litter had the highest value (34·0%) and layer droppings (SAKHA) the lowest (15·4%).Feed intake (g OM per kg0.75 day−1) decreased with increasing level of manure. Water intake and excretion were, in general, related to food and minerals intake. Feed intakes sometimes improved with advancing experimental period. In most experiments, digestibilities of ash and crude fiber increased while those of other components decreased with the inclusion of the waste materials in the diets.In vitro DMD or OMD were lower for diets containing waste materials than the control diets.Results of some rumen liquor parameters are tabulated and discussed.  相似文献

Several varieties of heat-sterilized broiler litter with 60% (wet basis, wb) moisture content were substrate in solid-state fermentations to produce biocontrol agents. Litter varieties included litter produced by one flock of broilers from medicated and non-medicated controlled rations, and litter produced by two flocks and four flocks on a single application of bedding material from medicated commercial sources. Litter preparations were inoculated with monocultures of Bacillus thuringiensis serovar japonensis strain Buibui, a pathogen of Japanese beetle larvae (Popillia japonica), or Pseudomonas fluorescens 2-79. B. thuringiensis did not grow in unextracted 1-flock litter nor in water extracted litter, but grew in methanol extracted litter to 5 x 10(10) cell forming units (CFU)/g litter (dry weight, dw) and a spore count of 1 x 10(10) CFU/g litter (dw). B. thuringiensis also grew in unprocessed 2-flock and 4-flock litter, achieving cell counts of 3 x 10(9) and 1 x 10(9) CFU/g litter (dw), respectively, and spore counts of 1 x 10(9) CFU/g litter (dw). P. fluorescens grew in medicated 1-flock litter with no extraction to a cell density greater than 4 x 10(11) CFU/g litter (dw). Bioassays in soil containing over 0.5% (db) litter fermented with B. thuringiensis resulted in over 90% mortality in 21 days for first instars of Japanese beetle when compared to a control treatment using compost without fermented litter. The investigations demonstrate that bacterial biocontrol agents produced via solid substrate fermentations using broiler poultry litter have potential in biocontrol applications in the soil environment.  相似文献

Rumen contents were investigated as a possible feed for farm animals. Although their composition varied to some extent, an average sample contained 21.8% crude protein, 30.3% crude fibre, 6.1% fat and 11.5% ash in the dry matter. Of total crude protein, 73.4% was amino acids. The raw rumen material was dried using the “organic carrier method” by previous mixing with maize meal (3 parts raw rumen contents/1 part maize meal). The product, RM meal (12.5% crude protein, 10.8% crude fibre, 5% fat, 4.9% ash), was used for feeding broiler chicks.The nutritive qualities of dried rumen contents (DRC) were assessed by biological tests on rats. Two levels of DRC (10% and 24%) were included in diets containing blood meal as a protein source and maize (Experiment I). The lower level of DRC (10%) did not reduce the growth rate of young rats (2.4 g/day), but the food consumption was increased. The total body composition of the rats was not changed (55.3% crude protein, 34.1% fat, 9.6% ash). The higher concentration of DRC decreased the growth rates markedly, as well as the apparent digestibility of dry matter and protein, and changed the body composition of rats.The apparent digestibility by rats of rumen protein in a semi-synthetic diet containing 50% DRC (Experiment II) was 44.6% and of dry matter, 56%.The RM meal was given to broiler chicks (0–8 weeks of age) as 23% or 60% of the diet which also contained soya bean meal, blood meal and sunflower meal as protein supplements (Experiment III). The chicks consumed all diets readily. The diet containing 23% RM meal (corresponding to 6.4% DRC) supported a better performance than the control diet. The larger amount of RM meal (corresponding to 17% DRC) reduced the final body weights of chicks.  相似文献

Abstract:In contrast to virtually all other species of ruminants, reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) eat substantial amounts of lichens in winter. Several different species of lichens are eaten and most are highly palatable. The chemical composition and the in vitro digestibility of six species of terricolous lichens commonly eaten by reindeer were measured. Ruminal inoculum was obtained in winter from six free-ranging reindeer that had been grazing on natural pastures in northern Norway. Analysis of the plant parts recovered from their rumens confirmed that the animals had been eating a mixed diet that included both lichens and vascular plants. The chemical composition and the in vitro digestibility of the different species of lichens varied considerably between species and genera. Cetraria islandica, C. nivalis andCladonia arbuscula were highly digestible [69–77% dry matter (DM)], Stereocaulon paschale was poorly digestible (43% DM), whereas Cladonia stellaris and C. gracilis had an intermediate digestibility (56–57% DM). Mixing Cladonia stellaris with vascular plants (50:50) had no effect on the in vitro digestibility of the combined substrates. The in vitro digestibility of Cladonia stellaris in inoculum from two captive reindeer which had had no access to lichens was very low (10% DM). This shows that the source of inoculum used for digestibility trials has a major effect on the apparent digestibility of the substrates. Evidently, the extent to which reindeer are able to utilize lichens depends on the species that are selected and on what the animals have been eating recently.  相似文献

Laboratory and field evaluation of broiler litter nitrogen mineralization   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Two studies were conducted for this research. First, a laboratory incubation to quantify broiler litter N mineralization with the following treatments: two soil moisture regimes, constant at 60% water fill pore space (WFPS) and fluctuating (60-30% WFPS), three soil types, Brooksville silty clay loam, Ruston sandy loam from Mississippi, and Catlin silt loam from Illinois. Second, a field incubation study to quantify broiler litter N mineralization using similar soils and litter application rates as the laboratory incubation. Broiler litter was applied at an equivalent rate of 350 kg total N ha(-1) for both studies except for control treatments. Subsamples were taken at different timing for both experiments for NO3-N and NH4-N determinations. In the laboratory experiment, soil moisture regimes had no significant impact on litter-derived inorganic N. Total litter-derived inorganic N across all treatments increased from 23 mg kg(-1) at time 0, to 159 mg kg(-1) at 93 d after litter application. Significant differences were observed among the soil types. Net litter-derived inorganic N was greater for Brooksville followed by Ruston and Catlin soils. For both studies and all soils, NH4-N content decreased while NO3-N content increased indicating a rapid nitrification of the mineralized litter N. Litter mineralization in the field study followed the same trend as the laboratory study but resulted in much lower net inorganic N, presumably due to environmental conditions such as precipitation and temperature, which may have resulted in more denitrification and immobilization of mineralized litter N. Litter-derived inorganic N from the field study was greater for Ruston than Brooksville. Due to no impact by soil moisture regimes, additional studies are warranted in order to develop predictive relationships to quantify broiler litter N availability.  相似文献

Faeces or manure (faeces + urine + straw bedding) from beef cattle given maize silage diets were ensiled with whole-crop maize (27% dry matter), after treatment with NaOH at 0, 7.5 or 15 g per 100 g excreta DM, so that excreta DM comprised 25, 50 or 100% of the total DM, in a factorial design. A control treatment consisted of maize forage ensiled alone. The ensiled products were analysed for the content of fermentation acids, pH, nitrogenous compounds, structural carbohydrates, starch, water-soluble carbohydrates, ash, sodium and digestibility in vitro. Mixtures which contained 25% excreta DM were well preserved with relatively low values for pH, butyric acid and ammonia-N, and a high proportion of fermentation acids as lactic acid. Mixtures which contained 50% excreta DM were generally poorly preserved. Addition of NaOH to excreta prior to ensiling was reflected in a decrease in the content of neutral detergent fibre and increased digestibility of organic matter in vitro in the ensiled products. Mixtures of 25% excreta treated with 15 g NaOH/100 g excreta DM gave values for digestibility in vitro similar to that of the maize ensiled alone.  相似文献

Ensiled or frozen barley straw, treated with 7.5 g NaOH and 120 ml solution per 100 g DM prior to storage, was given in mixtures with ryegrass silage to young calves, initially 100 kg live weight. Urea was added to the straw at feeding at 2.5% of the dry matter (DM) and soya bean meal was given at 0.3% live weight per day in all treatments. Voluntary intake, digestibility and live-weight gain were similar for the two types of treated straw. Intake of metabolisable energy and weight gain decreased with increasing level of straw in the diet, averaging 889 g per head per day for a control diet of grass silage (91.7% of total diet DM), and 749, 550 and 150 g per head per day when the proportion of straw DM to grass silage DM was 33: 66, 66 : 33 and 100 : 0, respectively. Whilst alkali-treated straw cannot replace high quality grass silage with the same nutritional efficiency, weight gains in excess of 500 g/day can be reached if the proportion of straw is less than half the total DM.  相似文献

Winter wheat was compared with a barley which has a normal amylopectin/amylose starch ratio, and waxy barleys which have essentially 100% amylopectin starch. In one trial, broiler chicks were fed on one of seven diets which had grain portions of all wheat (100W), 50% wheat–50% Compana (normal) barley (50W–50C), 25% wheat–75% Compana (25W–75C), 100% Compana (0W–100C), 50% wheat–50% Wapana (waxy) barley (50W–50Wa), 25% wheat–75% Wapana (25W–75Wa), or 100% Wapana (0W–100Wa). Body weights (g) at 7 weeks were (100W) 1659, (50W–50C) 1523, (25W–75C) 1401, (0W–100C) 1396, (50W–50Wa) 1503, (25W–75Wa) 1403 and (0W–100Wa) 1293. Dressing percentage was not affected by diet but mortality was greater on 0W–100C. Metabolizable energy (kJ/g dry matter) values determined on non-laying Leghorn hens were 12.93 ± 0.38 and 12.76 ± 0.46 for the Compana and Wapana barley, respectively. In a second trial, addition of a food-grade diastase at 2 g per kg of feed did not affect body weight on wheat-based diets, increased weights over corresponding control diets for Wapana-based diets but gave inconsistent results for Washunopana, a hull-less waxy barley with an active α-amylase-like activity on the starch granules. Group feed values indicated that enzyme supplements improved feed efficiency for barley diets but metabolizable energy values were similar for diets with or without diastase additions.  相似文献

Broiler litter was deep stacked at 30 and 40% moisture or ensiled at 40% moisture for 6 weeks in quadruplicate and subsequently evaluated for changes in chemical composition, pathogenic microbial load and in vitro dry matter degradability (IVDMD). A metabolism trial was conducted with lambs, in which a low-protein basal diet supplemented with litter, deep stacked at 30% and 40% moisture for 6 weeks or ensiled were compared with an isocaloric, isonitrogenous soybean meal supplemented diet. The maximum stack temperature of 65°C (irrespective of moisture level) was attained on day 7 at 45 cm depth and 60.5°C on day 10 at 80 cm depth, which eliminated coliforms. Increases in lactic and acetic acids were recorded with increase in moisture levels and advancement of stacking period. A small increase in crude protein (CP) content was associated with considerable declines in organic matter (OM), cellulose, neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and hemicellulose in deep-stacked litters. The apparent digestibility of nutrients and N-retention in the litter-supplemented diets were similar to those of the soybean meal supplemented diet. It is concluded that by deep stacking at 30 or 40% moisture, or ensiling, the litter was rendered free of pathogens and could be incorporated in the diet of livestock without adversely affecting digestibility of fiber and efficiency of N utilization.  相似文献

Maygrass, Phalaris caroliniana,a native annual grass used as a food resource by prehistoric Indians of the eastern United States, was analyzed for nutritive value. Protein nutrient density of maygrass grains is higher than that for other starchy seeds, oily seeds, and nuts commonly found in paleoethnobotanical samples from the region. Maygrass grains are a good source of several vitamins and minerals, especially thiamin and dietary iron. The amino acid in shortest supply is lysine. Nutritional quality of the grains may have served as an inducement for its protection or cultivation.  相似文献

Acidified litter benefits the intestinal flora balance of broiler chickens   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The alterations in the balance of the normal intestinal bacterial flora of chickens exposed to acidified wood-derived litter were analyzed and compared to those of a control group exposed to nonacidified litter. A total of 1,728 broilers were divided into two groups, with six replicates in each. One group was exposed to dry wood-derived litter, and the other was exposed to dry wood-derived litter sprayed with a mixture of sodium lignosulfonate, formic acid, and propionic acid. At five different times, five chickens from each pen were killed and the intestinal contents from ileum and caeca were collected. The samples were diluted and plated onto selective media to identify coliforms, Lactobacillus spp., Clostridium perfringens, and Enterococcus spp. Covariance analysis of bacterial counts showed significantly lower counts for C. perfringens in the caeca and the ileum and for Enterococcus spp. and Lactobacillus spp. in the ileum in chickens exposed to the acidified litter. Lactobacillus spp. showed significantly higher counts in the caeca in chickens exposed to acidified litter. There was no difference between the two litters with regard to coliforms in the ileum and the caeca or to Enterococcus spp. in the caeca. The study shows that exposing the chickens to acidified litter lowers the intestinal bacterial number, especially in the ileum, without negative consequences for the chicken's health or performance. Of special interest are the lower counts of C. perfringens and Enterococcus spp. that might reduce the risk of developing clinical or subclinical necrotic enteritis and growth depression.  相似文献
