Two experiments were conducted to investigate the use of sorghum, cottonseed meal and millet in broiler diets and their interaction when they are used simultaneously. In Experiment 1, a corn-soybean meal control diet was compared with eight experimental treatments based on low tannin sorghum (S30, S45 and S60), cottonseed meal (CM15, CM40) or both ingredients included in the same diet (S30/CM40, S45/CM25 and S60CM15). Results showed that BW gain was not affected by the inclusion of sorghum or cottonseed meal. However, feed intake tended to be affected by the cereal type with the highest values with sorghum-based diets. Feed conversion ratio increased (P<0.001) with sorghum-based diets compared with the control diet, whereas a combination of cottonseed meal and sorghum in the same diet did not affect the feed conversion ratio. Significant differences (P<0.001) were observed in apparent ileal digestibility (%) of protein and energy with the cottonseed meal and sorghum/cottonseed meal-based diets having lower protein and energy digestibility compared with corn-based diets. In Experiment 2, a control diet was compared with six diets in which corn was substituted at 60%, 80% or 100% by either sorghum or millet and other three diets with simultaneous inclusion of these two ingredients (S30/M30, S40/M40, S50/M50). Single or combined inclusion of sorghum and millet resulted in similar feed intake and growth performance as the control diet. Apparent ileal digestibility of protein and energy was higher with millet-based diets (P<0.001). Total tract digestibility of protein in sorghum and millet-based diets tended to decrease linearly with the increasing level of substitution. Sorghum-based diets resulted in lower total tract digestibility of fat compared with millet and sorghum/millet-based diets (P<0.001). Higher total tract digestibility of starch were obtained with the control diet and millet-based diets compared with the sorghum-based treatments. Results of the two experiments suggest that broiler growth performance was not affected by the dietary level of sorghum, millet or cottonseed meal. Nutrient digestion can, however, be affected by these feed ingredients.  相似文献

Summary The effects of tannins on survival, growth, and digestion were compared in two polyphagous species of Lepidoptera (one, the southern armyworm, a forb-feeder; and the other, the promethea silkmoth, a tree-feeder). Two different types of tannins (hydrolyzable and condensed) were incorporated into artificial basal diets in order to determine whether or not differential survival and growth would result between the forb feeder, which normally does not encounter tannins in its natural diet, and the tree-feeder, whose host species include many tanniniferous plants from several different families.Neonate larvae of the forb-feeding armyworms exhibited significantly suppressed 10-day growth rates at all tannin concentrations tested (0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, and 3.0% of wet weight) for both the hydrolyzable and the condensed tannin compared to the control diet, however no dose-effect was detectable. In contrast, there were no detectable differences in neonate survival or growth through the first 10 days for the tree-feeding promethea silkmoth larvae fed diets with either tannic acid or quebracho tree condensed tannin. In order to determine the physiological mechanisms of action of these tannins against armyworms, we conducted detailed physiological bioassays of biomass and nitrogen utilization by penultimate instar larvae. Standard gravimetric feeding studies with both tannic acid and the quebracho tree condensed tannin demonstrated that reduced relative growth rates (RGR's) of Spodoptera eridania Cram. were due to the suppressed relative consumption rates (RCR's) and decreased conversion efficiencies (ECD's) rather than due to digestibility-reduction (as reflected by approximate digestibility, AD). As with the neonate larval growth rate suppression, there were no detectable dose responses at the different concentrations of tannic acid (0.25, 0.50, 0.75, 1.00, 2.50, and 5.0 percent) and condensed tannins from quebracho (0.25, 0.50, 0.75, 1.0, and 2.5 percent) in our penultimate instar studies.  相似文献

Male broiler chickens were offered diets containing up to 30% Tower rapeseed meal, with these diets being prepared in mash or steam pelleted (crumble) form. In 4 experiments, birds receiving a maize and soya bean meal control diet showed a significant improvement in weight gain when crumbles, rather than mash diets, were used. With isocaloric, isonitrogenous diets containing rapeseed meal, no such improvement in growth rate was observed. Steam pelleting exerted no consistent effect on feed conversion. There was no significant difference in the growth rate of birds receiving mash diets irrespective of composition, while for crumbled diets, birds consuming the maize and soya bean control diet were heavier than comparable rapeseed-fed birds, with this difference being significant in 2 experiments. By adding fat, necessary to maintain rapeseed diets isocaloric, after the pelleting process, it was shown that fat per se was not responsible for failure to elicit a growth response with pelleted rapeseed meal diets. The response to pelleting was similar with diets prepared in an experimental pelleting machine at the university or by a commercial feed mill. Reduction in amino acid availability, in particular of arginine, is tentatively discussed in relation to the non-improved growth rate observed with pelleted diets containing rapeseed meal. Improvement in growth rate with pelleted vs. mash diets containing whole, raw rapeseeds is interpreted as a response to the heat treatment involved with the pelleting process.  相似文献

Tannins in forages complex with protein and reduce the availability of nitrogen to ruminants. Ruminal bacteria that ferment protein or peptides in the presence of tannins may benefit digestion of these diets. Bacteria from the rumina of sheep and goats fed Calliandra calothyrsus (3.6% N and 6% condensed tannin) were isolated on proteinaceous agar medium overlaid with either condensed (calliandra tannin) or hydrolyzable (tannic acid) tannin. Fifteen genotypes were identified, based on 16S ribosomal DNA-restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis, and all were proteolytic and fermented peptides to ammonia. Ten of the isolates grew to high optical density (OD) on carbohydrates (glucose, cellobiose, xylose, xylan, starch, and maltose), while the other isolates did not utilize or had low growth on these substrates. In pure culture, representative isolates were unable to ferment protein that was present in calliandra or had been complexed with tannin. One isolate, Lp1284, had high protease activity (80 U), a high specific growth rate (0.28), and a high rate of ammonia production (734 nmol/min/ml/OD unit) on Casamino Acids and Trypticase Peptone. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S ribosomal DNA sequence showed that Lp1284 was related (97. 6%) to Clostridium botulinum NCTC 7273. Purified plant protein and casein also supported growth of Lp1284 and were fermented to ammonia. This is the first report of a proteolytic, ammonia-hyperproducing bacterium from the rumen. In conclusion, a diverse group of proteolytic and peptidolytic bacteria were present in the rumen, but the isolates could not digest protein that was complexed with condensed tannin.  相似文献

Insects receive increasing attention as an alternative protein-rich food source for humans. Producing edible insects on diets composed of organic by-products could increase sustainability. In addition, insect growth rate and body composition, and hence nutritional quality, can be altered by diet.Three edible mealworm species Tenebrio molitor L., Zophobas atratus Fab. and Alphitobius diaperinus Panzer were grown on diets composed of organic by-products originating from beer brewing, bread/cookie baking, potato processing and bioethanol production. Experimental diets differed with respect to protein and starch content. Larval growth and survival was monitored. Moreover, effects of dietary composition on feed conversion efficiency and mealworm crude protein and fatty acid profile were assessed. Diet affected mealworm development and feed conversion efficiency such that diets high in yeast-derived protein appear favourable, compared to diets used by commercial breeders, with respect to shortening larval development time, reducing mortality and increasing weight gain. Diet also affected the chemical composition of mealworms. Larval protein content was stable on diets that differed 2–3-fold in protein content, whereas dietary fat did have an effect on larval fat content and fatty acid profile. However, larval fatty acid profile did not necessarily follow the same trend as dietary fatty acid composition. Diets that allowed for fast larval growth and low mortality in this study led to a comparable or less favourable n6/n3 fatty acid ratio compared to control diets used by commercial breeders. In conclusion, the mealworm species used in this study can be grown successfully on diets composed of organic by-products. Diet composition did not influence larval protein content, but did alter larval fat composition to a certain extent.  相似文献

Two feeding trials using 48 weaned crossbred piglets each were carried out to determine the effect of acidifying diets with potassium diformate (K-diformate), formic or sorbic acid on dietary preferences in piglets. In Exp. 1 two reference groups were fed either an unacidified diet or a diet containing 2.4% of K-diformate with no choice for selection. Furthermore, piglets in choice group 1 and 2 had the choice between an unacidified diet and a diet supplemented with 1.2 and 2.4% K-diformate, respectively. In Exp. 2, animals of three reference groups received exclusively an unacidified diet or diets supplemented with 1.2% formic acid or 1.2% sorbic acid, respectively. The animals of the choice groups had the choice between an unacidified diet and diets with 1.2% formic acid or 1.2% sorbic acid, respectively. In Exp. 1 average daily feed intake, daily gain and feed conversion ratio were 751?g, 458?g and 1.64?kg/kg, respectively, with no significant differences between treatments. In both choice feeding groups animals chose the diets on offer at random (each around 50%). In Exp. 2 growth and feed intake were not affected by the treatment, but feed conversion ratio was enhanced due to the 1.2% formic acid supplementation. Animals of both organic acid choice groups showed a significant preference for the unacidified diets in each experimental week. The formic acid and sorbic acid diets represented on average only 13.5% and 23.5% of the total feed intake. The present results demonstrate that the inclusion of 1.2% sorbic or formic acid or 2.4% of K-diformate in piglet diets has no negative impact on feed intake, but in a situation of choice feeding, piglets will refuse diets acidified with 1.2% formic or sorbic acid, presumably because of negative taste cues. Acidifying the diets with varying amounts of a K-diformate had no effect on dietary preferences of piglets.  相似文献

The effect of aqueous extracts of carob (Ceratonia siliqua) pods, gallotannic acid, gallic acid, and catechol on several microorganisms was studied. Carob pod extract and tannic acid showed a strong antimicrobial activity toward some cellulolytic bacteria. On the basis of tannin content, to which antimicrobial effect was related, carob pod extracts inhibited Cellvibrio fulvus and Clostridium cellulosolvens at 15 μg/ml, Sporocytophaga myxococcoides at 45 μg/ml, and Bacillus subtilis at 75 μg/ml. The inhibiting concentrations for tannic acid were found to be 12, 10, 45, and 30 μg/ml, respectively. Gallic acid and catechol were much less effective. Tannic acid and the tannin fraction of carob extract exerted both bacteriostatic and bactericidal effects on C. fulvus. Respiration of C. fulvus in the presence of bactericidal concentrations of tannic acid or tannin fraction of carob extract was inhibited less than 30%. A partial formation of “protoplasts” by C. fulvus was obtained after 2 hr of incubation in a growth medium to which 20% sucrose, 0.15% MgSO4·7H2O, and 10 to 50 μg/ml of tannic acid or 500μg/ml of penicillin, or both, had been added. Tannic acid and the tannin fraction of carob extract protected C. fulvus from metabolic lysis in sucrose solution. Although the growth of other microorganisms tested was only slightly affected, the morphology of some of them was drastically changed in the presence of subinhibitory concentrations of carob pod extracts of tannic acid. It is suggested that the site of action of tannins on sensitive microorganisms is primarily the cell envelope.  相似文献

Effects of a supplementation of 80mg L-carnitine perkg diet were studied in broiler chicken at two dietary levels of fat (4 and 8 %) and different feeding levels (ad libitum in a growth trial, 95 and 85 % of ad libitum in a balance trial). A low-carnitine basal diet adequate in amino acid concentration was used. In the growth trial, each diet was fed to 9 groups of 10 birds each for 16 days from day 5 of live onwards. Growth and feed intake were determined. At the end of the trial, birds were killed and homogenised for subsequent empty body analysis. Accretion of protein and energy was determined using a representative blank group killed at the beginning of the trial. In the balance trial, 8 individual birds were used per treatment. Birds were offered the feed at approximately 85 and 95% of ad libitum intake, which was determined with separate birds for both fat levels. Excreta were quantitatively collected three times daily for 8 consecutive days beginning on day 17 individually for each bird. Supplemented L-carnitine did not significantly affect any response criterion. However, growth and feed conversion tended to be improved by about 5% in the carnitine supplemented diets when fed ad libitum. An interaction between carnitine and fat level occurred with regard to feed conversion, indicating that carnitine had a positive effect at the high fat level, but not at the low fat level. L-carnitine did not positively affect the metabolisability of energy (ME/GE) and the efficiency of energy utilisation (RE/GE or RE/ME). Similarly, no significant carnitine effect was determined with regard to N accretion and the efficiency of utilisation of dietary protein in both trials. It is concluded that endogenous carnitine synthesis is not the limiting factor for energy utilisation in broiler chicken, even at high dietary fat concentration. Occasionally reported positive effects of supplemental carnitine were likewise caused by reasons other than improved energy or protein utilisation. Further studies on amino acid utilisation and catabolism should consider marginal amino acid supply.  相似文献

Browsing ruminants have been shown to tolerate a certain amount of tannins in their natural diet, and preference trials with captive roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) have suggested an active selection for a low dose of hydrolysable tannins. In this study, we investigated the preference patterns for tannic acid, a source of hydrolysable tannins, and quebracho, a source of condensed tannins, in a series of preference trials with captive roe deer over time, using a pelleted feed that differed only in the respective tannin content. Additionally, two groups of four hand-raised roe deer fawns were fed either a control or a 3% tannic-acid containing diet and physiological parameters were compared after 7.5 months. There were large differences in preference patterns between the individual roe deer groups; quebracho was mostly avoided, whereas tannic acid was actively included in the diet in differing, low proportions. However, one group consistently preferred the quebracho diet over both the control or the tannic acid diet. For the tannic acid, the preference pattern often revealed an initial period of high preference, followed by a stable period of a moderate preference. The fawns on the tannic acid diet had a lower pellet intake and a higher relative mass gain than the fawns on the control diet; differences in salivary tannin-binding capacity and in blood antioxidant status were below significance. These results are the first indications of potential benefits of a low-dose tannin diet, which need further confirmation. The results of the preference trials demonstrate that the time pattern of tannin intake is not constant, and pose the question about the validity of short-term preference trials in general.  相似文献

Experiments were conducted with rats, pigs, chickens and laying hens. Buckwheat had a high neutral detergent fibre content of 20%; digestible energy measured with pigs was 11.5 MJ/kg, and a mean metabolizable energy value of 11.0 MJ/kg with poultry. Growth studies with rats and chicks showed that buckwheat in mono-grain diets was superior to cereal grains. However, it was not possible to identify limiting amino acids in buckwheat, and supplementation with fat and protein sources did not promote the growth responses anticipated. Removal of the fibrous hulls from buckwheat by sifting did not increase growth rate, but food conversion was improved.Although chemical analysis indicated that amino acids were adequate to maintain egg production, this was not confirmed in laying trials even when additions of lysine and methionine were made to buckwheat. The most favourable response to buckwheat was achieved in pig-growth studies. Growth rate on an all-buckwheat diet was not different from that on an all-wheat (12% CP) diet but addition of lysine improved growth rate and feed conversion. Addition of 10% meat meal or sunflower meal to buckwheat gave similar growth and feed conversion to those of a commercial grower diet. Amino acid disappearance, measured at the terminal ileum of pigs prepared with re-entrant cannulas, gave values ranging from 90% for methionine to 65% for leucine, although there was substantial variation among pigs.It was apparent that buckwheat as the sole grain source was not suitable for the species examined. Differences in performance between individual animals may be attributed to their capacity to degrade the buckwheat fibre. This may in part explain the variation in the response of individuals to the experimental diets and therefore a tendency to mask responses to the various supplements. It can be concluded from this study that buckwheat as the sole source of energy is unsuitable for pigs and poultry even though in the diets of pigs it gave acceptable growth rate and feed conversion. Some pigs, however, did not take readily to this grain and often took several hours to consume their rations. Poor acceptability, perhaps due to the presence of a toxin or other chemical compounds, appears to be associated with this grain.  相似文献

Magadi soda (MS) is a commercially available form of sodium sesquicarbonate in Kenya. Soaking high-tannin sorghum (HTS) grain (2.5% catechin equivalents) in a 6 g l−1 MS solution was shown to eliminate measurable tannin content. A feeding trial was conducted to investigate the performance of broiler chicks fed soyabean-based diets containing HTS or MS-treated HTS as the sole cereal source from 1-3 weeks of age. A third diet containing sorghum with no detectable tannin content served as the control. Diets containing 220 g kg−1 crude protein were fed to 6 pens of 5 birds per pen for each treatment from 1-2 weeks of age and to 4 pens of 4 birds per pen per treatment in weeks 2-3. Feed intake, weight gain and feed efficiency (FE) were determined weekly. Apparent dry matter digestibility (DMD), metabolizable energy (AMEn) and nitrogen retention (NR) were measured over the last 3 days of each period. Gain and feed intake were not affected by treatment (P > 0.05), but FE and DMD were lower (P < 0.05) for the HTS diet than for the MS-treated HTS and control diets, which themselves were similar. Absolute NR was higher (P < 0.05) for the control diet than either of the HTS diets in week 2 but was the same for all diets in week 3. As % of intake, NR was higher (P < 0.05) for the control in both weeks 2 and 3 than for the HTS diets, although this was improved (P < 0.05) by MS treatment in week 2. AMEn values showed a similar pattern to that for NR in week 2 but in week 3 was the same for the MS-treated HTS and control diets, which were higher than the HTS diet (P < 0.05). Though total tannin content did not influence growth of birds in this study, MS treatment of HTS did reduce deleterious effects on FE, AMEn and NR as a % of intake.  相似文献

Using a liquid defined medium for the bioassays, the effects of tannic acid, naringin and 4-hydroxycoumarin on the growth of an ant-cultivated fungus were determined. The results with tannic acid indicated greater growth retardation than was obtained during bioassays on solid agar media. The reasons for this discrepancy are attributed to the undesirable properties of solid agar media for conducting tannin bioassays.  相似文献

Ruminants can tolerate moderate concentrations of dietary tannin, making it feasible to replace corn with sorghum in ruminant diets; however, conditioning temperature of pelleted total mixed ration (PTMR) greatly affects nutrient digestibility. The objective was to determine effects of grain type and conditioning temperature during pelleting on growth performance, ruminal fermentation, meat quality and blood metabolites of fattening lambs. This was a 2 × 3 factorial study, with corn and sorghum and three conditioning temperatures (65, 75 and 85 °C) in a randomized complete design, with 36 lambs (120 ± 10.2 d and 24.9 ± 3.3 kg) grouped by weight and randomly allocated. The resulting six PTMRs were referred to as 65-S, 75-S and 85-S for sorghum-based diets, and 65-C, 75-C and 85-C for corn-based diets, for low, medium and high pelleting temperatures, respectively. There was no grain type × conditioning temperature (Grain × Temp) interaction on growth performance and apparent nutrient digestibility. Furthermore, grain type did not affect DM intake (DMI), average daily gain (ADG) or feed conversion ratio (FCR) of fattening lambs. Pelleting at 75 °C improved ADG (P < 0.03) and FCR (P < 0.02) of fattening lambs compared to other temperatures. There was a Grain × Temp interaction (P < 0.01) on ruminal pH (lowest in lambs fed 75-S). There tended (P = 0.07) to be a Grain × Temp interaction for total volatile fatty acid (VFA), and there were Grain × Temp interactions for molar proportions of acetate (P < 0.04), butyrate (P < 0.03) and branch-chained VFA (P < 0.01). Lambs fed sorghum-based PTMR had greater molar proportion of propionate (P < 0.03) and lower acetate to propionate ratio (A:P, P < 0.04). Lambs fed sorghum-based PTMR had higher plasma concentrations of urea nitrogen (N) (P < 0.03), glucose (P < 0.01) and alkaline phosphatase (P < 0.05), whereas other blood metabolites were not affected by treatments. There were Grain × Temp (P < 0.03) interactions for color coordinates of longissimus and mid-gluteal muscle. Lambs fed sorghum-based PTMR had lower (P < 0.01) dressing percentage and meat quality than those fed corn-based PTMR. We concluded that sorghum can replace corn in lamb diets without compromising growth performance and feed efficiency; furthermore, feeding sorghum vs corn improved rumen fermentation, with reduced A:P ratio and enhanced N and glucose utilization. Finally, pelleting at 75 °C increased feeding value of either sorghum- or corn-based PTMR for fattening lambs.  相似文献

Sorghum panicle residue (SPR), a by-product of Sorghum vulgare, obtained in the manufacture of brooms and wisks, has potential as a partial substitute for grain in growing-finishing diets for feedlot lambs. Accordingly, 48 Pelibuey×Katahdin lambs (initial weight=16.2±4.3 kg) were used in an 84-d growth-performance trial to evaluate its comparative feeding value. Lambs were blocked by weight and assigned within weight groupings to 12 pens (4 lambs per pen). The SPR was finely ground before it was incorporated into the diet. The basal diet contained 60% whole grain sorghum (WGS; DM basis). Dietary treatments consisted in the replacement of WGS with 0, 50, or 100% SPR. Replacement of WGS with SPR decreased (linear effect, P=0.04) average daily gain (ADG), and tended to increase (linear effect, P=0.06) dry matter intake (DMI). Replacement of WGS with SPR decreased (linear effect, P<0.01) gain efficiency (ADG : DMI), and observed dietary net energy (NE), as well as hot carcass weight, dressing percentage, kidney–pelvic–heart fat, and back fat thickness (linear effect, P⩽.05) Other carcass characteristics and wholesale cuts as a percentage of cold carcass weight were not affected by dietary treatments. It is concluded that SPR is a palatable feed ingredient for inclusion in finishing diets for feedlot lambs. The comparative NE values for SPR are 1.50 and 0.91 Mcal/kg for maintenance and gain, respectively, 75% the NE value of WGS. These NE values reflect the greater fiber content of SPR. To the extent that dietary energy density limits energy intake (and hence daily weight gain), appropriate constraints on level of SPR incorporation is warranted.  相似文献

Effects of field beans with various tannin content and exogenous enzyme mixture containing tannase, pectinase and xylanase activities on N-corrected dietary apparent metabolisable energy (AMEn), coefficients of dry matter (DMR) and nitrogen retention (NR), fat digestibility, gastrointestinal tract (GIT) development, jejunal villus morphometry, ileal digesta viscosity and sialic acid were examined. Birds’ growth performance and energy conversion ratio (ECR) were also measured. Birds were fed one of eight mash diets. The Control diet contained as major ingredients wheat (400 g/kg) and soybean meal (SBM) (127 g/kg and 221 g crude protein/kg and 12.83 MJ AMEn/kg. To reduce nutrient density, the Control diet also contained washed sand at 119 g/kg. Another three diets containing 300 g/kg of each of three experimental field bean cultivar samples in replacement for SBM and sand were also mixed. Each diet was fed to nine pens with two male Ross 308 broilers. Diets high in tannin had low AMEn, ECR, DMR and NR (p < 0.001). Feeding field beans increased (p < 0.001) the weights of the pancreas and the proventriculus and gizzard (PG) of the birds. Supplementing diets with the enzyme mixture improved (p < 0.001) feed conversion efficiency, AMEn and all nutrient utilisation coefficients despite the tannins in diets. The enzyme mixture reduced ileal digesta viscosity (p < 0.001) and the weight of pancreas, total GIT and PG (p < 0.05) of the birds. It can be concluded that the feeding value of field beans with different tannin contents may vary when fed to broilers. The supplementation of the enzyme mixture improved the feeding value of diets for broilers. The beneficial effect of the addition of the enzyme mixture seems to be mediated through reduced ileal digesta viscosity and improved nutrient availability.  相似文献

Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S ribosomal DNA sequence showed that Lp1284 was related (97.6%) to Clostridium botulinum NCTC 7273. 相似文献
