There are remarkable interspecific differences in the sizes of the larvae of Andean frogs of the genus Telmatobius. This size variation seems to be associated with the duration of the larval stage and may affect the hind-limb morphology in Telmatobius. Larval, juvenile, and adult Telmatobius rubigo and T. oxycephalus were examined to determine the variation in relative sizes of hind-limb elements, their growth patterns during postmetamorphic life, and skeletal ontogeny. The results showed that the proportionately shorter hind limbs of T. rubigo relative to those of T. oxycephalus are associated with the protracted development and ossification of hind limbs during the prolonged larval life of T. rubigo. Postmetamorphically, the hind limbs grew faster than the body in juveniles of both species in contrast to the relative growth rates of the hind limbs and bodies of the adults. The growth phase of juvenile T. rubigo seems shorter than that of juvenile T. oxycephalus; possibly, this heightens the difference in the relative lengths of hind limbs after metamorphosis. Temperature affects the effects of thyroid hormone on growth and development, and T. rubigo lives at much higher, colder elevations than does T. oxycephalus. It is not clear whether the developmental differences described here are plastic (i.e., environmentally induced) or genetically fixed in each species.  相似文献

A phylogenetic hypothesis for the frogs of the genus Telmatobius that includes a comprehensive sample of the morphological and geographical variation is lacking. Obtaining such a hypothesis constitutes the main focus of this contribution. A phylogenetic matrix was generated based on 97 phenotypic characters and 56 terminals. A parsimony analysis of this matrix was performed with TNT. Telmatobius is found to be monophyletic and well supported by 11 synapomorphies. Although the consensus tree shows several polytomies, four main groups have been recovered. The well‐supported T. verrucosus Group includes forest and sub‐paramo species from Bolivia and Peru, and is the sister group of the remaining species. The T. bolivianus Group includes forest and inter‐Andean valley species from Argentina and Bolivia but it is poorly supported. Two supported high‐altitude groups have been recovered, the T. macrostomus Group from the Central Andes of Peru, and the T. marmoratus Group from the Altiplano‐Puna Plateau of Argentina, Bolivia, Peru and Chile and its adjacent Pacific and Northern slopes. The synapomorphies proposed for Telmatobius are discussed as well as the evolution of some of these synapomorphies and other characters within the genus.  相似文献

Species showing intraspecific morphological variation tend to be very difficult to identify using morphological characters. One such example is the cicada genus Mogannia where some species show considerable intraspecific variation mainly exhibited by wing pattern and body colouration. Thirty-one variants covering different putative species of Mogannia were recognized and illustrated in the present paper. Molecular data of mitochondrial COI and Cytb sequences were employed to test the level of variation and phylogeny of them. The existence of a ‘barcoding gap’ between intraspecific and interspecific genetic divergences and the reciprocally monophyletic clades indicate that all the closely related variants represent a single species, and that all these variants correspond to six species, respectively. However, the evolutionary relationships of intraspecific variants are not resolved possibly due to insufficient genetic variation among them. Our results indicated that some morphological characters, especially the wing pattern and body colouration, and even the number of apical processes of the aedeagus in a couple of related species, must be used with great caution in delimiting Mogannia species and their relatives. The factors responsible for intraspecific morphological variation and phylogeny of Mogannia spp. are preliminarily discussed.  相似文献

Systematics of frogs have been based on osteological and molecular characters; however, the morphology of the muscles of hands and feet has proven to be an important complement to these studies, but it has not been sufficiently studied. This study presents undescribed conditions based on the origin, insertion or arrangement of 18 muscles of hands and feet of Dendropsophus labialis, and intraspecific variation. Muscles of four specimens (two males and two females) were examined to observe both sides of each specimen determining new conditions, and comparing them with documented species of Dendropsophus. Four intraspecific variant categories were established: Minor, unique, explosive and mimicking. Mainly mimicking, explosive and unique variations were found. Our results show the need to expand intraspecific studies in more species of Dendropsophus and to assess its value in the phylogeny of the genus. The family Hylidae may be identifiable based upon the combination of character states of some of these muscles: the m. flexor indicis superficialis proprius and the group of tendines superficialis digitorum of hands and foot, the m. extensor brevis superficialis Digiti III of the hand, the m. extensor brevis superficialis Digiti IV in hands and the mm. extensores breves profundi Digiti III in hands.  相似文献

The woodcreepers, a clade of scansorial, neotropical birds, are distinctive among passerines in having extensive tendon ossification. Dissection of 42 of the 50 species indicates that such ossification in the hindlimb is limited almost entirely to tendons of insertion of the crural muscles. Most crural muscles have ossifications, and in all but one the ossified tendons are long and thin. Preliminary dissection revealed a similar pattern among ossified wing tendons. Phylogenetic analysis suggests that extensive tendon ossification is a synapomorphy of the woodcreepers. The species of Dendrocincla, which form a clade, show secondary reduction of ossification in some tendons, which may be correlated with increased intraspecific variation and with an expansion of foraging habits and postures to include nonscansorial behaviors. In contrast, the larger woodcreepers, other than Drymornis bridgesii and Nasica longirostris, form a clade with virtually no loss in ossification or evidence of intraspecific variation, even in large series of two species. Phylogenetic losses do not occur for the primary flexor of the ankle (M. tibialis cranialis), whereas two extensors (Mm. fibularis longus and gastrocnemius pars lateralis) show a complex pattern of derivation and loss. Previous biomechanical studies demonstrate that ossification increases the stiffness of tendons, making them stretch less under a given force. These structural and phylogenetic patterns are consistent with the view that hindlimb tendon ossification in woodcreepers is an adaptation to resist increased forces that act to extend the limb during vertical climbing. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Marked external and osteological differences exist between the related cyprinids Couesius plumbeus and Rhinichthys cataractae. C. plumbeus differs from R. cataractae in several external features, such as eye size and mouth shape, any one of which permits identification of individuals. C. plumbeus has postcleithral and nasal bones while R. cataractae does not. Many differences in bone shape also exist. Natural hybrids between the two species from Upper and Lower Kananaskis reservoirs, southwestern Alberta, are intermediate in the average of their external and osteological characters. Some characters in the hybrids, however, are so variable that they fall within the range of both parental species. An individual hybrid may resemble one parental species in one diagnostic character and the other parental species in another. The largest individuals known of the three forms from the Kananaskis system are hybrids.  相似文献

Three species of cichlids belonging to the genus Symphysodon have demonstrated interspecific and intraspecific variation in nucleolus organizer regions (NOR) detected with silver nitrate. In order to understand the evolution of this marker in the genus, the structural variability of these sequences in mitotic chromosomes from Symphysodon aequifasciatus, Symphysodon discus and Symphysodon haraldi was investigated using both silver nitrate impregnation and hybridization of the 18S rRNA gene probe. For the three species, the two markers were intraspecifically and interspecifically variable both in the number and in the size of the sites. This polymorphism may stem from duplications and translocations, which suggests that structural chromosome rearrangements effectively act in the karyoevolution of wild Symphysodon species and may have favoured the adaptability of these fishes to diverse aquatic environments in the Amazon.  相似文献

A collection of skulls ofPan troglodytes verus from Liberia was analysed according to specific characters of morphology and sexual dimorphism based on osteological data. Morphologic characters of both sexes are described somewhat in detail. Measurements were taken. Morphometric data show a high range of intraspecific variability within our collection. It shows that the mean metric divergence between both sexes is rather slight, skulls of males in our sample are on the average 3.7% larger than those of females.  相似文献

The anatomy and morphology of leaves in Carex have the potential to be taxonomically useful. However, studies on the variability of leaf characteristics in the genus are sparse. Researchers therefore risk using leaf anatomical characters without the knowledge of whether they are consistent in a species. We examined 22 qualitative and seven quantitative leaf anatomy characters from transverse leaf sections to test their consistency across 11 Carex spp. The characters were clearly described and primarily microscopic. Some characters were found to exhibit high levels of intraspecific variation, whereas other characters exhibited high levels of consistency in a species, including the shape of the leaf section, the density of papillae and the size of epidermal cells. Caution must be applied when choosing leaf anatomy to delimit taxa because of the intraspecific variability found in some characters, but sufficient numbers of invariant characters exist to provide useful taxonomic separation. © 2013 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2013, 172 , 371–384.  相似文献

The pollen–ovule ratio (P/O) is commonly used to estimate the mode of sexual reproduction in flowering plants. In previous studies, a clear correspondence has been detected between this character and the degree of autogamy. We here investigate variation in this character and its expected correlates in the genus Veronica (Plantaginaceae). Pollen–ovule ratios of 45 species representing eleven percent of all the species in the genus were investigated and compared with results from crossing experiments from previous studies. In addition, multiple populations of 17 of the 45 studied species were sampled and a controlled‐environment experiment was conducted to evaluate the extent of intraspecific variation. Moreover, relationships between P/O and other primary and secondary reproductive characters of the Veronica flower were investigated in relation to a phylogenetic hypothesis in order to determine the phylogenetic constraints on reproductive characters. The differences in P/O among species correspond well to the diversity of mating systems in Veronica and correlate well with other floral characters such as corolla size. These characters together seem to allow a powerful and fast tool to infer mating systems. However, causes for intraspecific variation of P/O, such as different cytotypes, ecotypes or different growth conditions, need to be considered.  相似文献

For many insect taxa, larval morphology plays a decisive role in various fields like taxonomy, phylogeny or ecology. However, species identification is usually based on imaginal characters and the identification of larvae depends upon an established link to unequivocally identified imagines. This taxonomic correspondence of larvae and imagines is far from being established in many odonate species. We have employed a molecular approach to link larval and adult specimens in Tauriphila argo (Hagen, 1869). The sequenced mt SSU gene fragments of the reared female, supposedly a T. argo female, and a clearly identified male specimen of the species were identical. However, the larva of the reared female clearly differed from the described T. argo larva, previously matched to the species. From this observation, we conclude that the previously described larva of T. argo does not belong to this species because of too many phenotypic differences that far exceed the generally observed intraspecific variation.

It can be foreseen that the molecular approach will prove to be effective in identifying unknown larvae in many insect species. Additionally, the discrimination of sibling species or the linkage of allotypes and holotypes will become feasible with this approach.  相似文献

The development of the chondrocranium and the relative timing of ossification of the osteocranium is described in the teleost fish Betta splendens from a large series of cleared and differentially stained specimens. General trends in ossification patterns are examined from developmental, phylogenetic, and functional contexts. As in many other vertebrates, dermal bones form before cartilage bones. Ossification sequence conforms to functional need in a very general way, but there are many inconsistencies in the details of order. For example, some bones that are directly involved in feeding ossify no earlier than bones more indirectly involved. Comparisons of ossification sequence within specific cranial regions are made among Betta splendens, Oryzias latipes (Atherinomorpha), and Barbus barbus (Ostariophysi) within a phylogenetic framework. Many evolutionary changes in relative sequence of ossification are evident within regions among these taxa, yet many other sequences are conserved. The logistic difficulty of comparing entire cranial ossification sequences (vs. regional sequences) makes evident the need for new methods for identifying and quantifying sequence changes. Intraspecific variation in order of ossification is described for the first time in teleost fishes. To the extent that ossification sequence varies intraspecifically, conclusions drawn from previous interspecific comparisons are compromised. Understanding the importance of changes in ossification order within and among taxa will require experimental, functional, and evolutionary work. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

The gadoid fishes Theragra finnmarchica from the coast of northern Norway and Theragra chalcogramma from the north‐east Pacific could not be taxonomically discriminated by sequencing the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) gene. However, the taxa differed in 10 of 42 non‐osteological and in four of 17 osteological characters. Ontogenetic changes were found for 16 of the examined non‐osteological characters. Five taxon‐specific characters, unaffected by ontogenetic scaling, were examined by discriminant analysis. A 100% correct classification was obtained from a discriminant function based on number of pyloric caeca and number of gill rakers on the upper part of the gill arch. However, all examined characters overlapped between the two taxa, except the number of pyloric caeca. On the basis of their genetic similarity and slight morphological differences, T. finnmarchica should be considered a junior synonym of T. chalcogramma.  相似文献

Varanid lizards, which vary considerably in body mass both interspecifically and intraspecifically, are generally considered to be morphologically similar. However, significant and non-isometric variation in the relative appendage dimensions for 17 species of Western Australian goannas suggest that these lizards are not morphologically conservative. The first and second canonical variates clearly distinguish the two subgeneral Odatria and Varanus, and species are generally sexually dimorphic. The morphological variation observed among these 17 species of goanna is associated with foraging mode and ecology. However, no single or small group of morphological dimensions discriminates phylogenetic groups, sexes, or ecological groups, and body size is an important component in these analyses. J. Summary By using restriction endonuclease digestion patterns, the degree of intraspecific polymorphism of mitochondrial DNA in four diploid species of wheat and Aegilops, Ae. speltoides, Ae. longissima, Ae. squarrosa, and Triticum monococcum, was assessed. The outbreeding Ae. speltoides was found to possess the highest degree of variability, the mean number of nucleotide substitutions among conspecific individuals being 0.027 substitutions per nucleotide site. A very low degree of mtDNA variation was detected among Ae. longissima accessions, with most of the enzyme-probe combinations exhibiting uniform hybridization patterns. The mean number of substitutions among Ae. longissima individuals was 0.001 substitutions per nucleotide site. The domesticated diploid wheat T. monococcum var. monococcum and its conspecific variant T. monococcum var. boeoticum seem to lack mitochondrial DNA variability altogether. Thus, the restriction fragment pattern can be used as a characteristic identifier of the T. monococcum cytoplasmic genome. Similarly, Ae. squarrosa accessions were found to be genetically uniform. A higher degree of variation among accessions is observed when noncoding sequences are used as probes then when adjacent coding regions are used. Thus, while noncoding regions may contain regulatory functions, they are subject to less stringent functional constraints than protein-coding regions. Intraspecific variation in mitochondrial DNA correlates perfectly with the nuclear variability detected by using protein electrophoretic characters. This correlation indicates that both types of variation are selectively neutral and are affected only by the effective population size.  相似文献

Brachycephalus is a small, endemic genus of anurans that occur throughout the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. Recent analyses corroborated the monophyly of two species groups within this genus (B. ephippium and B. pernix), whereas the B. didactylus group appears to be polyphyletic. Herein, we compare and describe the skeletal system of all species from the Brachycephalus ephippium species group. We investigated diagnostic characters that are potentially useful to delimit similar species, confirmed the previously proposed genus definition and added six extra characters. We propose an osteological diagnosis for each species of the B. ephippium group, evaluating and describing intraspecific variations. Our results suggest that adults of B. ephippium group have ornamented parotic plates, ornamented post-orbital crests, absence of quadratojugal and neopalatines, distal end of the otic ramus of squamosal expanded towards the parotic plate, reduced zygomatic ramus of the squamosals, posterolateral projection of the crista parotica, presence of ornamented spinal plates (except B. alipioi) and ornamented paravertebral plates. We highlighted the importance of including more than one specimen per species when dealing with miniaturized taxa. A comparison with other Brachycephalus species groups and with Ischnocnema was also provided. Lastly, we suggest some characters to be included in future phylogenetic analysis.  相似文献

The Dendrocolaptinae (woodcreepers), a clade of neotropical passerine birds, form an adaptive radiation with a spectrum of body sizes and bill shapes. Woodcreepers are scansorial, climbing vertical tree trunks supported by their forward toes and stiffened tail. The hindlimb musculature was dissected and described for 42 of the 50 species representing all genera, and for 14 outgroup species. Structural, functional, developmental and evolutionary aspects of muscular variations are analysed. Woodcreepers have extensive ossification of leg tendons. There is intraspecific variation in the degree of ossification, and interspecific variation in the occurrence of ossification between muscles. Intraspecific variation in muscle structure was apportioned according to a published classification. Nine muscles showed variation of the minor, singular, mimicking and incongruous types, but explosive variation was lacking. Some muscles are more prone to variation than others. Ten muscles showed interspecific variations of four types, for which new terms are proposed: occurrence variations; attachment variations in origins and insertions; structural variations in size, shape, or fibre arrangement; and relational variations with other muscles. Variations in the presence of a muscle component did not occur. Discrimination of intraspecific variations from interspecific variations is discussed.  相似文献
