Various workers, including T. D. Stewart, claim that the aboriginal Americas were relatively disease-free because of the Bering Strait cold-screen, eliminating many pathogens, and the paucity of zoonotic infections because of few domestic animals. Evidence of varying validity suggests that precontact Americans had their own strains of treponemic infections, bacillary and amoebic dysenteries, influenza and viral pneumonia and other respiratory diseases, salmonellosis and perhaps other food poisoning, various arthritides, some endoparasites such as the ascarids, and several geographically circumscribed diseases such as the rickettsial verruca (Carrion's disease) and New World leishmaniasis and trypanosomiasis. Questionably aboriginal are tuberculosis and typhus. Accordingly, virtually all the “crowd-type” ecopathogenic diseases such as smallpox, yellow fever, typhoid, malaria, measles, pertussis, polio, etc., appear to have been absent from the New World, and were only brought in by White conquerors and their Black slaves. My hypothesis is that native American medical care systems—especially in the more culturally advanced areas—were sufficiently sophisticated to deal with native disease entities with reasonable competence. But native medical systems could not cope with the “crowd-type” disease imports that struck Indian and Eskimos as “virgin field” populations. Reanalysis of native population losses through a genocidal combination of disease, war, slavery and attendant cultural disruption by Dobyns, Cook and others strongly suggest that traditional estimates underplayed the death toll by a factor of the general order of ten. This would make for an immediately pre-contact Indian population of some 90–111 million instead of the traditional 8–11 million. Evidence is growing that Indians may have been no more susceptible to new pathogens than are other “virgin soil” populations, and thus their immune systems need not be considered less effective than those in other people. Present-day high mortality rates in Indians of both continents from infectious disease imports may be more socioeconomic than anything else.  相似文献

The trunk morphology of the larvae of the kauri pine (Agathis) seed infesting moth Agathiphaga is described using conventional, polarization, and scanning electron microscopy. The pine seed chamber formed by the larva is also described and commented on. The simple larval chaetotaxy includes more of the minute posture sensing setae, proprioceptors, than expected from the lepidopteran larval ground plan. The excess of proprioceptors is suggested to be necessary for sensory input concerning the larval posture within the seed chamber. The trunk musculature includes an autapomorphic radial ventral musculature made up of unique multisegmental muscles. The combined presence of additional proprioceptors and the unique ventral musculature is proposed to be related to the larval movement within the confined space of the seed chamber, especially to a proposed somersault movement that allows the larva to orientate itself within the chamber. Biophysical methods allow quantitative deductions as to the “bending effectivity” of various stele types and the contribution of different tissues to the stability of upright plant axes. Considering the first occurrence of the different stele types in geological history, a strong tendency towards a higher “bending effectivity” can be observed. It can be shown that Rhynia gwynne-vaughanii, Aglaophyton major (Rhynia major) and Asteroxylon mackiei as well as probably the vast majority of early “vascular” land plants were turgor systems, i.e. that the parenchyma (when fully turgescent) is by far the most important contributory factor towards the bending stability of the upright axes.  相似文献

We present phylogenetic analyses (parsimony, maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference) for 69 lineages of anthoathecate hydroids based on 18 morphological characters (12 proposed for the first time) plus mitochondrial (16S and COI) and nuclear (18S and 28S) molecular markers. This study aims to test the monophyly of the present concept of the family Bougainvilliidae, assessing its phylogenetic position within Hydroidolina. Our working hypothesis is used as a context for inferring the evolution of certain morphological characters, focusing on the exoskeleton. Our results shed light on some phylogenetic uncertainties within Hydroidolina, delimiting eight well‐supported linages, viz. Hydroidolina, Siphonophorae, Leptothecata, Aplanulata, Filifera II, Filifera III, Capitata and Pseudothecata taxon novum, the latter supported by four morphological synapomorphies. The monophyly of several families was not supported, viz. Bougainvilliidae, Cordylophoridae, Oceaniidae, Rathkeidae and Pandeidae. Some of the genera typically considered in Bougainvilliidae, including Bougainvillia, fell into the clade Pseudothecata, which is consistently reconstructed as the sister group of Leptothecata. We formally suggest that Dicoryne be removed from Bougainvilliidae and placed in the resurrected family Dicorynidae. The exoskeleton was a key feature in the diversification of Hydroidolina, especially with the transition from the bare hydranth to one completely enveloped within the exoskeleton. In this context, bougainvilliids exhibit several intermediate states in the development of the exosarc. Although the concatenated analysis unravels some interesting hypotheses, taxon sampling is still deficient and therefore more data are necessary for achieving a more complete understanding of the evolution and ecology of bougainvilliids and their allies.  相似文献

The study examines the basic morphological and ecological features of Dolly Varden from Lake Kronotskoe (Russia, Kamchatka). Seven valid morphs different in head proportions, feeding, timing, and place of spawning have been determined in this ecosystem. The basic morphometric characteristics clearly separate Lake Kronotskoe morphs from each other, as well as from its potential ancestor (Dolly Varden). According to CVA analysis, the most notable morphological characteristics determining the mouth position are the length of a lower jaw and rostrum. Furthermore, five of seven morphs inhabit different depth zones of the lake and feed on different food resources. Our data suggest that reproductive isolation may be maintained by temporal/spatial isolation for two morphs with lacustrine spawning, and by spatial isolation only for the rest of the morphs with riverine spawning. The sympatric diversity of the Lake Kronotskoe charrs is exceptionally wide, and there are no other examples for seven sympatric morphs of genus Salvelinus to coexist within a single ecosystem. This study puts forward a three‐step hypothetical model of charr divergence in Lake Kronotskoe as a potential ground for future studies.  相似文献

Preliminary observations were made between October 1982 and May 1983 on the nature, taxonomic composition, spatial distribution, buoyancy behaviour and nutrient requirements of some unusual planktonic algal “jellies” in Oguta Lake in Southeastern Nigeria. These “jellies” are macroscopic, blue-green algal masses whose excessive mucilage of high consistency acts as substrata for other epiphytic components viz. diatoms and green algae. They are more abundant in the lentic areas of the lake, undergo diurnal vertical movements and have their growth enhanced by spikes of nitrogen and phosphorus salts into their aquatic medium. The effects of these “jellies” on the ecology and general water use of the lake are discussed. Speculations on the reasons for their occurrence are given and possible control measures outlined.  相似文献

The true diversity and interspecific limits in the Neotropical endemic avian genus Dendrocolaptes (Furnariidae) remain a highly controversial subject, with previous genus‐wide assessments, based mostly on morphological characters, producing poorly resolved phylogenies. The lack of well‐resolved, robust, and taxonomically densely sampled phylogenies for Dendrocolaptes prevents reliable inferences on the genus’ actual species diversity and evolutionary history. Here, we analyzed 2,741 base pairs of mitochondrial and nuclear genes from 43 specimens belonging to all species and the majority of subspecies described for Dendrocolaptes to evaluate species limits and reconstruct its diversification through time. Our phylogenies recovered a monophyletic Dendrocolaptes, with two main highly supported internal clades corresponding to the D. certhia and D. picumnus species complexes. Also, our analyses supported the monophyly of most Dendrocolaptes species recognized today, except D. picumnus, which was consistently recovered as paraphyletic with respect to D. hoffmannsi. A coalescent‐based test supported a total of 15 different lineages in Dendrocolaptes and indicated that the number of currently accepted species within the genus may be greatly underestimated. Particularly relevant, when combined with previous analyses based on plumage characters, comparative high levels of genetic differentiation and coalescent analyses support the recognition of D. picumnus transfasciatus as a full species that is already under threat. Ancestral area reconstructions suggest that diversification in Dendrocolaptes was centered in lowland Amazonia, with several independent dispersal events leading to differentiation into different adjacent dry and high elevation forest types throughout the Neotropics, mainly during the Middle and Late Pleistocene.  相似文献

Skeletal muscle cells (fibers) contract by shortening their parallel subunits, the myofibrils. Here we show a novel pattern of myofibril orientation in white muscle fibers of large black sea bass, Centropristis striata. Up to 48% of the white fibers in fish >1168 g had peripheral myofibrils undergoing an ~90o shift in orientation. The resultant ring band wrapped the middle of the muscle fibers and was easily detected with polarized light microscopy. Transmission electron microscopy showed that the reoriented myofibrils shared the cytoplasm with the central longitudinal myofibrils. A microtubule network seen throughout the fibers surrounded nuclei but was mostly parallel to the long‐axis of the myofibrils. In the ring band portion of the fibers the microtubule cytoskeleton also shifted orientation. Sarcolemmal staining with anti‐synapsin was the same in fibers with or without ring bands, suggesting that fibers with ring bands have normal innervation and contractile function. The ring bands appear to be related to body‐mass or age, not fiber size, and also vary along the body, being more frequent at the midpoint of the anteroposterior axis. Similar structures have been reported in different taxa and appear to be associated with hypercontraction of fibers not attached to a rigid structure (bone) or with fibers with unusually weak links between the sarcolemma and cytoskeleton, as in muscular dystrophy. Fish muscle fibers are attached to myosepta, which are flexible and may allow for fibers to hypercontract and thus form ring bands. The consequences of such a ring band pattern might be to restrict the further expansion of the sarcolemma and protect it from further mechanical stress. J. A fossilized fragment of human parietal bone has been recently recovered from the lowest layer of the Casal de' Pazzi fluvial deposit (stratigraphically dated at about 200–250 ky BP). The fossil presents characters-i.e., thickness, degree and development of curvature, type of endocranial vascularization-which distinguish it from the corresponding cranial regions of both Homo erectus and anatomically modern Homo sapiens. While a morphological orientation towards Neanderthal characters can be considered, the affinities of the Casal de' Pazzi parietal are primarily with other late Middle Pleistocene specimens. The authors conclude that the Casal de' Pazzi human find can be assigned to the “archaic Homo sapiens” group falling within the European pre-Neanderthal range. Its particular morphology constitutes new evidence of human evolution from the geographical area of Rome.  相似文献

The spatial and temporal fluctuations of the phytopigment content, “potential” primary productivity and total biomass of the epipelic algae of the River Wye System were studied during June 1979 to May 1981. Chlorophyll-a and productivity values showed a downstream increase, much less obvious for the total biomass. Phaeophytin-a values followed almost similar spatial and temporal fluctuations to those of chlorophyll-a. High chlorophyll-a productivity and total biomass values were recorded during warmer months due to favourable environmental conditions for algal growth, but lower values during unfavourable winter and flood periods.  相似文献

The Upper Guinean Forests of Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia contain high levels of freshwater biodiversity. The Guinean Range and associated Fouta Djallon highlands separate two biogeographical provinces in the region and served as a refugium during past climatic fluctuations. While many species of freshwater fishes are restricted to one biogeographical province or the other, some are reported to occur on both sides of the divide. Here, we examine the molecular and morphological diversity of an endemic small African barb, Enteromius foutensis, reported to occur in both provinces. This integrative analysis revealed unrecognized diversity and suggests recent, or ongoing, events that facilitated geodispersal and subsequent divergence in the region. The molecular analysis revealed three divergent and well‐supported populations within E. foutensis. Accounting for allometric shape variation allowed us to observe diagnostic morphological differences among the populations. Enteromius foutensis sensu stricto is restricted to the Little Scarcies drainage in Guinea and northern Sierra Leone. Our study revealed two candidate species distinct from E. foutensis. One is likely a narrow endemic restricted to a small area in the Konkouré River basin; the other candidate species inhabits the upper Senegal and Gambie River drainages. How these patterns of diversity compare with other freshwater species from the Fouta Djallon highlands and the conservation status of these candidate species are also discussed.  相似文献

In biology and medicine many substances and drugs enter the system not at regular time intervals but rather according to a random process. In the present article a situation is investigated where input enters a 2-compartment system according to a Poisson process. The arising two random concentration curves y(t), one for the central and one for the peripheral compartment are discussed (shot noise). The equations for E[y(t)] and Var [y(t)] are derived. The dependence of E[y(t)] and Var [y(t)] and of the index of dispersion ID[y(t)] on the rate parameters is analysed and discussed in both compartments. The arising calculations were considerably simplified by means of “Mathematica”, a computer program which allows to perform symbolic calculations.  相似文献

Phylogeographic genomics, based on multiple complete mtDNA genome sequences from within individual vertebrate species, provides highly-resolved intraspecific trees for the detailed study of evolutionary biology. We describe new biogeographic and historical insights from our studies of the genomes of codfish, wolffish, and harp seal populations in the Northwest Atlantic, and from the descendants of the founding human population of Newfoundland. Population genomics by conventional sequencing methods remains laborious. A new biotechnology, iterative DNA “re-sequencing”, uses a DNA microarray to recover 30–300 kb of contiguous DNA sequence in a single experiment. Experiments with a single-species mtDNA microarray show that the method is accurate and efficient, and sufficiently species-specific to discriminate mtDNA genomes of moderately-divergent taxa. Experiments with a multi-species DNA microarray (the “ArkChip”) show that simultaneous sequencing of species in different orders and classes detects SNPs within each taxon with equal accuracy as single-species-specific experiments. Iterative DNA sequencing offers a practical method for high-throughput biodiversity genomics that will enable standardized, coordinated investigation of multiple species of interest to Species at Risk and conservation biologists.  相似文献

We studied the development of the serotonergic modulation of the stomatogastric nervous system of the lobster, Homarus americanus. Although the stomatogastric ganglion (STG) is present early in embryonic development, serotonin immunoreactivity is not visible in the STG until the second larval stage. However, incubation of the STG with exogenous serotonin showed that a serotonin transporter is present in embryonic and early larval stages. Serotonin uptake was blocked by paroxetine and 0% Na+ saline. The presence of a serotonin transporter in the embryonic STG suggests that hormonally liberated serotonin could be taken up by the STG, and potentially released as a “borrowed transmitter”. Consistent with a potential hormonal role, serotonin is found in the pericardial organs, a major neurosecretory structure, by midembryonic development. The rhythmic motor patterns produced by embryonic and larval STGs were decreased in frequency by serotonin. Lateral Pyloric (LP) neuron‐evoked excitatory junctional potentials (EJPs) in the embryos and the first larval stage (LI) were larger, slower, and more variable than those in the adult. The amplitude of adult LP neuron‐evoked EJPs was increased more than twofold in serotonin, but in embryos and LI preparations this effect was negligible. In embryos and LI preparations, serotonin increased the occurrence of muscle fiber action potentials and altered the EJP wave‐form. These data demonstrate that serotonin receptors are present in the stomatogastric nervous system early in development, and suggest that the role of serotonin changes from modulation of muscle fiber excitability early in development to enhancement of neurally evoked EJPs in the adult. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We describe the first known macronuclear chromosomes that carry more than one gene in hypotrichous ciliated protozoa. These 4.9- and 2.8-kbp chromosomes each consist almost exclusively of two protein-coding genes, which are conserved and transcribed. The two chromosomes share a common region that consists of a gene that is a member of the family of mitochondrial solute carrier genes (CR-MSC; [Williams and Herrick (1991): Nucleic Acids Res 19:4717–4724]. Each chromosome also carries another gene appended to its common region: The 4.9-kbp chromosome also carries a gene that encodes a protein that is rich in glutamine and charged amino acids and bears regions of heptad repeats characteristic of coiled-coils. Its function is unknown. The second gene of the 2.8 kbp chromosome is a mitochondrial solute carrier gene (LA-MSC); thus, the 2.8-kbp chromosome consists of two mitochondrial solute carrier paralogs. Phylogenetic analysis indicates that the two genes were duplicated before ciliates diverged from the main eukaryotic lineage and were subsequently juxtaposed. The CR- and LA-MSC genes are each interrupted by three introns. The introns are not in homologous positions, suggesting that they may have originated from multiple group II intron transpositions. These chromosomes and their genes are encoded in the Oxytricha germline by the 81 locus. This locus is alternatively processed to generate a nested set of three macronuclear chromosomes, the 4.9- and 2.8-kbp chromosomes and a third (1.6 kbp) which consists almost exclusively of the shared common gene, CR-MSC. Such alternative processing is common in macronuclear development of O. fallax [Cartinhour and Herrick (1984): Mol Cell Biol 4:931–938]. Possible functions for alternative processing are considered; e.g., it may serve to physically link genes to allow co-regulation or co-replication by a common cis-acting sequence. Dev. Species adapted to prevailing soil and climatic conditions and native to the same geographic context are increasingly recommended for ecological restoration at high altitude. Better knowledge is required on the level of variation within these species for morpho‐physiological traits and seed yield. Adequate and affordable seed production is a prerequisite for native species to be widely adopted for restoration interventions. This study evaluated the variation of yarrow (Achillea millefolium L.) germplasm collected in the Rhaetian Alps, Italy. The worth of yarrow for restoration at high altitude has been repeatedly noted. The main goal of the study was to identify promising materials for selection purposes. The explored mountain section harbored valuable variation for traits of interest. Altitude, climate, and soil should frame an ecological correspondence between the collection site and the target restoration site, to secure the value of the native germplasm outside the boundaries of its collection area. The work also assessed any interaction between the germplasm and the ex situ growing environments, represented by a mountain and a lowland site, and verified the feasibility of the latter for seed multiplication. The growing site remarkably affected several morpho‐physiological characters. The lack of difference in mean seed yield between the two altitude‐contrasting sites suggested that seed multiplication of yarrow could also be conveniently carried out in lowland environments, with advantages in terms of production costs. Nonetheless, different yield responses in the two sites were observed, emphasizing the need of choosing the material to multiply based on the environment adopted for seed production.  相似文献
