Red deer females collect on male clumps at mating areas   总被引:3,自引:1,他引:3
Mating strategies in mammalian herbivores are adapted to thedispersion of females, and female dispersion is mainly determinedby resource dispersion, although it is frequently unclear whetherfemales may also be influenced by the location of males. Inthe red deer (Cervus elaphus) the distribution of females beforethe rut predicts the places were males should establish territoriesand even their relative success. However, the number of femalesusing the mating areas in Doñana increases during therut. We observed 20 areas of meadows, used by grazing femalesbefore the rut. At the onset of the rut, the number of females increasedin some of these areas and decreased in others, and the opposite patternwas found after the rutting period. Changes in the vegetationat mating and nonmating areas could not account for the changesin female distribution; even some of the highest quality meadowswere vacated by females during rut. In selecting the matingareas, females avoided isolated small meadows within the scrubarea and preferred larger meadows where a number of neighboringrutting males could be found. Females also avoided those areas heavilyused by fallow deer (Dama dama), a competing sympatric species. We found that females suffered less sexual harassment when inlarger harems and when their harem was surrounded by other harems. Our results, together with those in the literature about thispopulation, indicate that red deer females collect during theearly rut in mating areas containing several rutting males, although once there they may select particular sites based on availabilityof food rather than based on the presence of a particular male. Byjoining harems in large meadows they are less harassed, andat the same time they probably increase their chances of matingwith highly competitive males. The results from Doñanasupport the idea that harassment avoidance may lead to femalemovements to areas with male territories without lek breedingor female comparison of male phenotypes and may bring an insightinto those factors leading to clumps of male territories andleks.  相似文献

Selective herbivory can influence both spatial and temporal vegetation heterogeneity. For example, many northern European populations of free-ranging ungulates have reached unprecedented levels, which can influence plant species turnover, long-term maintenance of biodiversity and the subsequent stability of boreal ecosystems. However, the mechanisms by which large herbivores affect spatial and temporal vegetation heterogeneity remain poorly understood. Here, we combined a 10-year exclusion experiment with a herbivore intensity gradient to investigate how red deer (Cervus elaphus) acts as a driver of temporal and spatial heterogeneity in the understory of a boreal forest. We measured the two dimensions of heterogeneity as temporal and spatial species turnover. We found that temporal heterogeneity was positively related to herbivory intensity, and we found a similar trend for spatial heterogeneity. Removing red deer (exclosure) from our study system caused a distinct shift in species composition, both spatially (slow response) and temporally (quick response). Vegetation from which red deer had been excluded for 10 years showed the highest spatial heterogeneity, suggesting that the most stable forest understory will occur where there are no large herbivores. However, excluding red deer resulted in lower species diversity and greater dominance by a low number of plant species. If both stable but species rich ecosystems are the management goal, these findings suggest that naturally fluctuating, but moderate red deer densities should be sustained.  相似文献

Seasonal change in the coat of four male and four female Red deer (Cervus elaphus) was studied in coat and skin samples taken monthly for two years. Changes in coat length were measured, the times of moult recorded, and the cycle of follicle activity determined from histological preparations.  相似文献

Calving times of Red deer (Cervus elaphus) on Rhum   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The distribution of calving times in a population of Red deer on the Isle of Rhum, Inner Hebrides, between 1971 and 1976 is described. Two-thirds of calves were born during a three-week period beginning in the last week of May, though calving extended from early May to late August. Except in 1976, when calving occurred late, the timing of births was similar in all years. Variation in calving time within years resulted from (i) individual differences in calving time, (ii) late conception in hinds which failed to conceive at first oestrus, and (iii) the effect of previous reproductive history: on average, hinds calved one week later after rearing a calf in the previous winter. Gestation lengths of wild hinds were longer than in a captive group. This may have been due to overestimation of a proportion of gestation lengths in wild hinds, but supplementary feeding could also have shortened gestation length in captive animals.  相似文献

Some general principles underlying the concept of carrying capacity and problems in using the term are illustrated by reference to herbivore/vegetation inter-relationships in intensive pasture systems, regimes of range management and wildlife systems. The approach to management of the deer/range system in Scotland does not fit into any of these categories of land use. Ecological deficiencies arise because deer, rather than the soils and vegetation, are regarded as the resource. Hence, management of the range is animal orientated. It is based on techniques such as burning which give temporary benefits to the animal component of the system. It is argued that this inversion of priorities in management has the long-term effect of encouraging vegetational successions that aggravate problems of animal management, especially on the poorer soils. The characteristics of the deer and the vegetation, and trends of change are considered in this context. It is concluded that within the present framework of management there is little scope for radical improvement. A restructuring of the system is required to give greater control over the biological performance of the deer and of the trends in the vegetation.  相似文献

In two experiments, Red deer hinds were synchronized with intravaginal progesterone and were given 4 d of treatment (3 d before progesterone withdrawal and 1 d after) with an ovine follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) preparation which had a claimed low level of luteinizing hormone (LH) contamination. In Experiment 1, 12 hinds received one of four FSH levels by osmotic minipump. Hinds were run with fertile stags, and laparotomy and embryo recovery were performed 9 d after progesterone withdrawal. The ovulation rates (mean of three hinds per dosage) were 1.0, 2.0, 4.3 and 15.3 (number of corpora lutea counted) for estimated daily dosages rates of 0.036, 0.071, 0.11 and 0.14 units FSH preparation/day; the response to the increasing dosage was exponential (P<0.01). The recovery rate of ova on flushing was 38% (24 63 ), with all recovered ova being fertilized and of transferable quality. In Experiment 2, performed later in the breeding season, eight hinds received 0.14 units FSH/day either by minipump or by intramuscular injection. The mean ovulation rates were 3.0 and 11.0 (a significant difference, P<0.01), respectively, with a recovery rate of 72% (34 47 ), and with only 18 34 ova considered to be of transferable quality. The recovery rate in Experiment 2 was significantly higher than that in Experiment 1 (P<0.001). Overall, the results were better than those previously recorded for red deer, perhaps a function of both the FSH preparation used and an improved progesterone profile in estrus synchronization.  相似文献

While vocal tract resonances or formants are key acoustic parameters that define differences between phonemes in human speech, little is known about their function in animal communication. Here, we used playback experiments to present red deer stags with re-synthesized vocalizations in which formant frequencies were systematically altered to simulate callers of different body sizes. In response to stimuli where lower formants indicated callers with longer vocal tracts, stags were more attentive, replied with more roars and extended their vocal tracts further in these replies. Our results indicate that mammals other than humans use formants in vital vocal exchanges and can adjust their own formant frequencies in relation to those that they hear.  相似文献

Variation in mandible length and body weight of Red deer (Cervus elaphus)   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The range of intra-specific variation in morphological characters has rarely been examined by taxonomists, and subspecies have often been named on the basis of as few as two skulls. However, despite the limitations set by the material data, taxonomists have long recognized an apparent cline in nose length of Red deer ( Cervus elaphus L.) between the eastern and western extremities of its European distribution. Since larger samples of mandible and body weight data have recently become available for three widely separated populations within the north western parts of their range—the Isle of Rhum (north-west Scotland), Grizedale (north-west England) and Oksbol (Denmark)—it has become possible to examine this cline critically in relation to age, development and geography. In all three populations, the relationship between body weight and jaw length differed significantly at the 1% level, but, as expected, whilst the deer from Denmark had the longest mandibles as adults, as juveniles they had the shortest mandibles in relation to body weight. Furthermore, if the island of Rhum was divided arbitrarily into three areas, namely north western, south western and eastern, an exactly similar picture emerged. Therefore, no single simple law such as Bergman's rule seems to offer an entirely satisfactory explanation.  相似文献

In many mammals, the energetic costs of lactation double a female's daily energy requirements on her activity budgets, food choice and ranging behaviour–but the effects of lactation have rarely been documented. In this paper, the ecological consequences of lactation in free-ranging Red deer ( Cervus elaphus ) hinds on the lsle of Rhum is examined by comparing the feeding behaviour, habitat use and ranging behaviour of hinds that were supporting calves (milk hinds) with hinds that did not have calves (yeld hinds). In summer, milk hinds graze for approximately two hours longer per day then yeld hinds. This difference has disappeared by the latter half of the winter, when the grazing budgets of milk and yeld hinds are similar. Both in summer and winter milk hinds spend more time grazing on the most strongly selected plant communities (short, herb-rich greens) where standing crops are low but food quality is comparatively high. Inter-year variation in habitat use by milk hinds is also closely related to variation in rainfall—while this is not the case among yeld hinds. Both in summer and winter, yeld hinds range more widely than milk hinds.  相似文献

1. Increased fine sediment input caused by agricultural development is expected to act as a stressor for stream ecosystems. In a large‐scale field experiment, we added fine river sand to 50‐m reaches of three second‐order streams in each of four categories of catchment development (ungrazed tussock grasslands, grazed pasture, dairying and deer farming) and measured the responses of macroinvertebrates and aquatic moss. 2. Before addition, fine sediment cover differed between land uses, being lowest in tussock (7%), intermediate in pasture (30%) and dairy (47%) and highest in deer streams (88%). Sediment addition increased cover by one land‐use category (e.g. augmented sediment cover in tussock streams was similar to pre‐existing cover in pasture streams), and cover remained high in impact reaches (compared with controls) throughout the 5‐week experiment. Sediment addition did not change concentrations of phosphate, nitrate and ammonium, which were generally highest in dairy streams and lowest in tussock streams. 3. Aquatic mosses (most common in tussock, absent in dairy and deer), invertebrate density (highest in deer, lowest in tussock), taxon richness (highest in pasture, lowest in deer) and diversity (highest in pasture and tussock, lowest in dairy and deer) all differed between land uses. Sediment addition resulted in reductions of moss cover, invertebrate taxon richness and richness of Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera and Trichoptera in impact relative to control reaches. 4. The impact of sediment addition was strongest in pasture streams where pre‐existing sediment cover was moderate and richness and diversity of the invertebrate community highest. However, even in the already sediment‐rich and species‐poor deer streams, density of one common taxon was reduced significantly by sediment addition, and another two were affected in the same way in dairy streams, the second‐most intense land use. 5. Our experiment has disentangled the impact of sediment addition from other concomitant land‐use effects that could not be reliably distinguished in previous research, which has mainly consisted of correlative studies or unrealistically small‐scale experiments.  相似文献

There have been few studies on the foods of Red deer (Cervus elaphus L.) and Roe deer (Capreolus capreolus L.) in British forests. Notable exceptions are the work of Prior (1968), Henry (1978) and Hosey (1981) on Roe deer. British work on the food of Red deer seems to have been confined to studies of animals on upland swards (Charles, McCowan & East, 1977; Staines ∓ Crisp, 1978). However, a more abundant supply of data on the food and feeding of both Red and Roe deer comes from the Continent (Dragoev, 1964; Gabuzov, 1960; Kolev, 1966; Novikov & Timofeeva, 1964; Siuda, Zorowski & Suida, 1969; Dzieciolowski, 1967 a , b , 1969). Even so the data available were obtained from studies made on individual species of deer. This paper reports the results of an investigation into seasonal changes in the diet of Red and Roe deer coexisting in a conifer forest in the east of England.  相似文献

The red deer (Cervus elaphus) is one of the most widely distributed species of deer in Europe. Due to its economic value as game species or its negative impacts on forestry, agriculture and conservation areas, most populations are currently managed, with strategies and intensity of the management varying between countries. In Britain, and less certainly in Ireland, red deer have been continuously present since the end of the last glaciation and constitute the largest population of red deer in Europe. Although they thrived in the past when forests were abundant, the current distribution of red deer in the British Isles is uneven, with the largest numbers being found in Scotland and few and more localised populations in England, Wales and the Republic of Ireland. In the British Isles, as in many other parts of Europe, there is a long history of man interacting with deer populations including local extinctions, multiple translocations and introductions of exotic species of deer. Among introduced exotic species of deer, the Japanese sika (Cervus nippon) is the one of most concern. After introduction of small numbers at multiple locations in Britain and Ireland from 1860 onwards, sika have increased in population number and range in areas with good forest cover, and where they overlap with red deer there is a risk of hybridisation. Due to recent increases in numbers and range of red and sika deer, both species pose a range of management challenges which are not easy to solve. In this review we summarise the history and status of these two species in Great Britain and Ireland, describe current management and discuss management options for the future.  相似文献

This paper records some features of Red deer ( Cervus elaphus L.) at very high population density on a Scottish island. About half the total population was shot-out in autumn 1974, and half the remainder in autumn 1975, with special searches for deer which had died of natural causes during the intervening year. In all, the animals examined amounted to 80% of the original population, and from the data gathered it was possible to (i) assess the structure and reproductive features of the original population; (ii) examine the level of animal performance at this exceptionally high population-density; and (iii) check for any changes in performance arising from the initial reduction in density.
The sex-ratio of adults in the original population showed a small excess of hinds, stags being apparently subject to a higher mortality rate than hinds after about six years of age. In performance, these deer were much the same as those living elsewhere on Scottish hill-land at relatively high population-density, i.e. with delayed puberty and poor breeding rates in hinds, and with much smaller adults than in woodland habitats. But, contrary to expectation, the general level of performance was not unusually low for Red deer on Scottish hill-land, and there was no evidence of transmissible diseases or excessive parasitism. It was also surprising that the animals showed no improvements in performance following their first reduction; if anything, they were slightly poorer after one year at reduced density. This may have been a temporary consequence of the severe disruption of existing behaviour patterns brought about by the sudden loss of many groups of deer.  相似文献

The structure of, and seasonal change in, the coat of Red deer ( Cervus elalphus ) kept indoors is described. Changes in coat length, the grouping of different types of wool fibre in the skin, and changes in follicle activity determined from histological preparations, were studied in samples of the coat and skin taken monthly for two years.  相似文献
