Summary Populations of Lomatium grayi (Umbelliferae), an andromonoecious, perennial herb, differe in growth rates, flowering frequency, and survivorship. Effects of these different life histories on the ontogeny of sex expression were analyzed for plants from two populations grown from seedlings in a common garden and monitored for six years. Plants from Smoot Hill, Washington grew faster, had a higher probability of flowering at each age and size after the first year of growth, and a higher probability of flowering repeatedly among years than did plants from Clarkston, Washington. The proportion of plants producing some hermaphroditic flowers increased with plant size in both populations. Smoot Hill plants, however, were more likely to begin flowering as small, staminate plants than Clarkston plants. Clarkston plants did not begin flowering until they were older and larger, and most of these plants produced some hermaphroditic flowers when they began reproduction. The positive association between production of hermaphroditic flowers and both plant size and age was consistent with the hypothesis that hermaphroditic flowers are more costly to produce than staminate flowers.Although the populations did not differ in the total number of flowers per plant produced at any age or size, Smoot Hill plants consistently produced a lower percentage of hermaphroditic flowers than Clarkston plants at larger sizes and later ages. Consequently, selection for faster growth rates and higher flowering frequency at small sizes and early ages may have favored the more staminate-biased sex ratios in the Smoot Hill population.  相似文献

Summary The effects of seed size on growth, biomass allocation and competitive ability of Rumex acetosella plants grown either individually or in competition were studied in two populations (6 months and 15 years old respectively) sampled from a postcultivation successional gradient. For plants grown individually there were highly significant effects of seed weight on growth after 43 days, with a higher relative growth rate (RGR) observed for plants raised from heavier seeds. However at the end of the experiment, seedlings developed from lighter seeds had a RGR 2 times greater than those from heavier seeds. Final biomass of the two types was not significantly different after 73 days of growth. When plants were grown individually, there were only slight differences between populations, but when grown in monocultures of 4 plants per pot, plants from the old population had higher root and leaf biomass per pot whereas those from the young population had a higher reproductive effort per pot. This suggests that a trade-off between allocation to sexual and vegetative reproduction occurs over successional time. In mixtures of light and heavy seeds, plants from light seeds were shorter, had fewer leaves and lower biomass than plants from heavy seeds, which were also taller and produced more dry matter than plants grown from heavy seeds in monoculture. The significant effects of seed weight and population on biomass parameters persisted unit the end of the experiment. Seedlings from heavy seeds were strong competitors: those from the young population grew better in the presence of neighbors than in monoculture and those from the late successional population suppressed the more the growth of their partners. Seedlings from light seeds were subordinate competitors. These results suggest that seedlings from seeds of different sizes benefit from contrasting ecological conditions and that selection acts on reproductive output along successional gradients.  相似文献

Herbivory and disease can shape the evolution of plant populations, but their joint effects are rarely investigated. Families of plants of Brassica rapa (Brassicaceae) were grown from seeds collected in two naturalized populations in an experimental garden. We examined leaf infection by the fungus Alternaria, seed predation by a gall midge (Cecidomyiidae) and plant life-history traits. Plants from one population had heavier seeds, were more likely to flower, had less fungal infection, had more seed predation and were more fecund. Fungal infection score and seed predation rate increased with plant size, but large plants still had the greatest number of undamaged fruits. Spatial heterogeneity in the experimental garden was significant; seed predation rate and fecundity varied among blocks. An apparent tradeoff existed between susceptibility to disease and seed predation: plants with the highest fungal infection score had the lowest seed predation rate. Alternaria infection varied between populations, but the disease had no effect on fecundity. Seed predation did reduce fecundity. Damaged fruits had 31.4% fewer intact seeds. However, evidence for additive genetic variation in resistance to seed predation was weak. Therefore, neither disease nor seed predation was likely to be a strong agent of genetically based fecundity selection.  相似文献

One outstanding and unsolved challenge in ecology and conservation biology is to understand how pollinator diversity affects plant performance. Here, we provide evidence of the functional role of pollination diversity in a plant species, Erysimum mediohispanicum (Brassicaceae). Pollinator abundance, richness and diversity as well as plant reproduction and recruitment were determined in eight plant populations. We found that E. mediohispanicum was generalized both at the regional and local (population) scale, since its flowers were visited by more than 100 species of insects with very different morphology, size and behaviour. However, populations differed in the degree of generalization. Generalization correlated with pollinator abundance and plant population size, but not with habitat, ungulate damage intensity, altitude or spatial location. More importantly, the degree of generalization had significant consequences for plant reproduction and recruitment. Plants from populations with intermediate generalization produced more seeds than plants from populations with low or high degrees of generalization. These differences were not the result of differences in number of flowers produced per plant. In addition, seedling emergence in a common garden was highest in plants from populations with intermediate degree of generalization. This outcome suggests the existence of an optimal level of generalizations even for generalized plant species.  相似文献

Based on resource allocation theory, a negative correlation is predicted between resource availability and plant defense against herbivore attack. Plants growing in resource-limited environments should display lower growth and higher defense against herbivores than plants growing where resources are less limited. Interspecific comparisons generally support these predictions. We evaluated this hypothesis at the intraspecific level, for two sapling populations of the canopy tree Dialium guianense (Caesalpiniaceae) at the Lacandona rain forest in southeast Mexico. The two populations occur in nearby sites, adjacent to the Chajul Field Station, under the same climatic conditions and within the same vegetation type, but with considerable differences in soil quality. The Floodplain site, under the influence of the Lacantún River, has favorable conditions for plant growth, in terms of nutrient and water availability, whereas the Hills site, given its location and soil characteristics, provides more restricted conditions for plant growth. Plants in the Floodplain site had higher growth and lower concentration of phenolic compounds than plants in the Hills (a two-fold difference in leaf area production, 1.3 less total phenolics). These differences were correlated with differences in herbivore attack, as saplings from the Hills, with a higher defensive potential, had lower average levels of herbivory than Floodplain plants (3.86% ± 0.80 vs. 7.75% ± 1.43 of leaf area loss). The relationship between the concentration of phenolic compounds and leaf quality for herbivores was consistent with preference assays carried out under laboratory conditions using two species of generalist herbivores, the army worm Spodoptera fugiperda and the native katydid Orophus sp. In 63.8 and 81.3% of the cases, third-instar larvae of S. fugiperda and adults of Orophus, respectively, preferred leaflets from the Floodplain plants population. Moreover, on average, the adults of Orophus consumed 2.9 times more leaf area from the Floodplain than from the Hills. In addition, a reciprocal transplant experiment indicated that phenotypic plasticity is likely to be the mechanism by which the plants expressed differential growth and traits affecting herbivory levels. In this experiment, growth and herbivory levels were 1.6 and 1.7 times higher, respectively, in plants transplanted into a Floodplain experimental plot than those in a Hills plot. This work contributes to our understanding of how edaphic heterogeneity can determine intraspecific variation in the relationship of plants with their herbivores and evaluates the underlying mechanisms promoting such influence. Summary Individual plants in gynodioecious populations ofPhacelia linearis (Hydrophyllaceae) vary in flower gender, flower size, and flower number. This paper reports the effects of variation in floral display on the visitation behaviour of this species' pollinators (mainly pollen-collecting solitary bees) in several natural and three experimental plant populations, and discusses the results in terms of the consequences for plant fitness. The working hypotheses were: (1) that because female plants do not produce pollen, pollen-collecting insects would visit hermaphrodite plants at a higher rate than female plants and would visit more flowers per hermaphrodite than per female; and (2) that pollinator arrival rate would increase with flower size and flower number, the two main components of visual display. These hypotheses were generally supported, but the effects of floral display on pollinator visitation varied substantially among plant populations. Hermaphrodites received significantly higher rates of pollinator arrivals and significantly higher rates of visits to flowers than did females in all experimental populations. Flower size affected arrival rate and flower visit rate positively in natural populations and in two of the three experimental populations. The flower size effect was significant only among female plants in one experimental population, and only among hermaphrodites in another. The effect of flower number on arrival rate was positive and highly significant in natural populations and in all experimental populations. In two out of three experimental populations, insects visited significantly more flowers per hermaphrodite than per female and visited more flowers on many-flowered plants than on few-flowered plants, but neither effect was detected in the third experimental population. Because seed production is not pollen-limited in this species, variation in pollinator visitation behaviour should mainly affect the male reproductive success of hermaphrodite plants. These findings suggest that pollinator-mediated natural selection for floral display inP. linearis varies in space and time.  相似文献

Summary The inoculation ofAlnus rubra (red alder) withFrankia sp. can lead to a highly efficient symbiosis. Several factors contribute to the successful establishment of nitrogenfixing nodules: (1) quantity and quality ofFrankia inoculant; (2) time and method of inoculation; (3) nutritional status of the host plant.Frankia isolates were screened for their ability to nodulate and promote plant growth of container-grown red alder. Inoculations were performed on seedlings and seeds. Apparent differences in symbiotic performance could be seen when seeds or seedlings were inoculated. Plants inoculated at planting performed significantly better than those inoculated four weeks later in terms of shoot height, nodule number and shoot dry weight. If inoculation was delayed further, reduction in shoot height, nodule number and shoot dry weight resulted. The effect of fertilizer was also investigated with regard to providing optimal plant growth after inoculation. Plants receiving 1/5 Hoagland's solution minus nitrogen showed maximal plant growth with abundant nodulation. Plants receiving 1/5 Hoagland's solution with nitrogen showed excellent plant growth with significantly reduced nodulation.  相似文献

Summary The effect of full sunlight, 60%, or 90% attenuated light on photosynthetic rate, growth, leaf morphology, dry weight allocation patterns, phenology, and tolerance to clipping was examined in the glasshouse for steppe populations of the introduced grass, Bromus tectorum. The net photosynthetic response to light for plants grown in shade was comparable to responses for plants grown in full sunlight. Plants grown in full sunlight produced more biomass, tillers and leaves, and allocated a larger proportion of their total production to roots than plants grown in shade. The accumulation of root and shoot biomass over the first two months of seedling growth was primarily responsible for the larger size at harvest of plants grown in full sunlight. Plants grown under 60% and 90% shade flowered an average of 2 and 6 weeks later, respectively, than plants grown in full sunlight. Regrowth after clipping was greater for plants grown in full sunlight compared to those grown in shade. Even a one-time clipping delayed flowering and seed maturation; the older the individual when leaf area was removed, the greater the delay in its phenology. Repeated removal of leaf area was more frequently fatal for plants in shade than in full sunlight. For plants originally grown in full sunlight, regrowth in the dark was greater than for shaded plants and was more closely correlated to non-flowering tiller number than to plant size. This correlation suggests that etiolated regrowth is more likely regulated by the number of functional meristems than by differences in the size of carbohydrate pools. Thus, shading reduces the rate of growth, number of tillers, and ability to replace leaf area lost to herbivory for B. tectorum. These responses, in turn, intensify the effect of competition and defoliation for this grass in forests. B. tectorum is largely restricted to forest gaps at least in part because of its inability to acclimate photosynthetically, the influence of shade on resource allocation, and the role of herbivory in exacerbating these effects.  相似文献

Geographic variation in morphological traits of thirteen populations ofArabis serrata was analyzed to characterize the life history of each particular population in the field. These localities varied in altitude, topography, soil type, humidity, vegetation structure and degree of disturbance. Twelve morphological characters were measured in each plant, and populations were compared using both univariate and multivariate analyses. Populations showed significant differences for most of the traits measured. Principal component analyses revealed a significant differentiation among populations although a continuous variation for some traits was noted. Length of capsules and leaf length of inflorescence's stalks were correlated with the number of frost free days and with temperature, precipitation and number of days of the growing season. The number of rosettes was also correlated with the same variables but negatively. Seed weight was correlated positively with altitude but negatively with temperature and length of the growing season. Populations were also differentiated according to soil conditions and disturbance regimes distinguishing different types of populations: I) populations with many small rosettes, and few heavy seeds per capsule in volcanic soils with low disturbance; ii) plants with many small seeds and few rosettes in very disturbed localities along asphalt roadways and mountain trails; and iii) large plants with intermediate seed size and intermediate number of seeds per plant in limestone and serpentine soils under different conditions of disturbance. Populations ofA. serrata displayed a complex pattern of differentiation in morphological and life history traits in relation to several biotic and abiotic factors. The quantitative nature of the differences among populations ofA. serrata observed in the field deserves further studies (e.g., quantitative genetics and phenotypic plasticity) under controlled conditions in order to assess the extent of differentiation within this species complex.  相似文献

In this study morphological variation and the potential for competition to affect biomass and seedling selection of the families of five populations of Rumex acetosella L. sampled along a successional old-field gradient have been investigated. Seeds from 25 families were submitted to four competitive regimes: no competition (one plant per pot), medium competition (two plants/ pot taking plants from the same population), high within-population competition (four individuals from the same population in a pot) and high between-population competition (four individuals from two different populations in a pot). Eight traits were analysed after 3 months of growth for variation among families within populations. A significant difference among families within the two older populations was recorded for sexual biomass and related components. High sensitivity of these traits to density was observed in all populations except the youngest, suggesting specialization to particular environmental conditions in late successional populations, and a good adaptive capacity to buffer environmental variation in the pioneer population. Little significant interaction between competitive regimes and families within populations was found, i.e. genotypes within each population showed little variation in their response to environmental variation. Genotypic variance decreased with increasing competitive conditions for the majority of the traits. However, the percentage of variance in sexual reproduction explained by family was stable among treatments. Tradeoffs between vegetative reproduction and sexual reproduction were recorded at the population level along the successional gradient, with increasing competitive conditions. As succession proceeds, we observed a decrease in sexual reproduction and an increase in vegetative reproduction. At the family level, correlation among traits were similar when plants were grown in the absence of competition and at high density, with a significant negative correlation between sexual reproduction and vegetative reproduction. For both sprout number and sexual biomass, the performance of families grown under all the treatments was positively correlated. Together these results indicate allocational constraints on the reproductive biology of R. acetosella that may be favoured by natural selection and have influenced population differentiation along the successional gradient. However, they also revealed that the potential exists for evolutionary specialization through plasticity, in response to variation in environmental conditions.  相似文献

Plant growth enhancing effects of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi are suitably quantified by comparisons of mycorrhizal and non-mycorrhizal plant growth responses to added phosphorus (P). The ratio between the amounts of added P required for the same yield of mycorrhizal and non-mycorrhizal plants is termed the relative effectiveness of the mycorrhiza. Variation in this relative effectiveness was examined for subterranean clover grown on a high P-fixing soil. Plants were either left non-mycorrhizal or inoculated with one of three AM fungal species with well-characterised differences in external hyphal spread. With no P added, plants from all treatments produced <10% of their maximum growth achieved at non-limiting P supply. The growth response of non-mycorrhizal plants was markedly sigmoid. Mycorrhizal growth responses were not sigmoid but their shape was two-phased. The first phase was an asymptotic approach to 25–30% of maximum growth, followed by a second asymptotic rise to maximum growth. Growth effects of Glomus invermaium and Acaulospora laevis were quite similar. Plants in these treatments produced up to four times greater shoot dry biomass than non-mycorrhizal plants. Scutellospora calospora was less effective. The relative effectiveness of AM fungi varied with the level of P application. This is expected to apply to all soils on which a sigmoid response is obtained for growth of non-mycorrhizal plants. In a simple approximation the relative effectiveness was calculated to range from 1.46 to 15.57. Shoot P contents were increased by up to 25 times by A. laevis, significantly more than by the other two fungi. The further mycelial spread of this fungus is thought to have contributed to its relatively greater effect on plant P content.  相似文献

Summary Responses to defoliation were studied in two tallgrass prairie perennials (Andropogon gerardii and Panicum virgatum) established from seed at three densities. P. virgatum was also grown from transplanted rhizomes of established clones. Plants of both species displayed a continuum of responses to defoliation, from large reductions in biomass, tillering and seed production to significant increases in one or more performance measures. In crowded populations, defoliation shifted plants into subordinate positions within the competitive hierarchy. Plants competing intraspecifically and those that were initially small suffered more from defoliation than either plants grown at low density or those that were larger than their neighbors. At the highest plant density, the effects of defoliation or initial plant size were overshadowed by the effects of crowding. When defoliated and grown at similar densities, P. virgatum and A. gerardii grown from seed showed large reductions in biomass, seed production, and new rhizome production, but established P. virgatum ramets grown from rhizomes showed increases in these performance measures. Thus, herbivory may be particularly detrimental to P. virgatum during juvenile stages before perennating organs have developed. Overcompensation of P. virgatum clones in response to defoliation only occurred if all ramets within the clone were defoliated. In clones containing both defoliated and undamaged ramets, there were no differences in their performance, suggesting that genets are capable of integrating the effects of differential defoliation among shoots. Defoliated P. virgatum clones allocated a smaller fraction of their total biomass to new rhizomes, indicating that the short-term regrowth response following defoliation may incur a longer-term cost associated with gradual reduction in biomass of the perennating organs and reduced genet success.  相似文献

The response ofAlnus glutinosa, Casuarina cunninghamiana, Elaeagnus angustifolia andMyrica cerifera to a range of substrate nitrogen levels in solution, in relation to plant growth, infection, nodulation and root fine structure was studied. Nine concentrations of potassium nitrate ranging from 0.05 to 3.0 mM, were tested on each of the species. Plants were inoculated withFrankia pure cultures after a two week exposure to one of the nine levels of added nitrate. After six more weeks with constant exposure to nitrate, plants were harvested and assayed. With the exception of Myrica, regression analyses of whole plant dry weights as a function of added nitrate were highly significant. There was a tendency for nodulated plants grown at intermediate levels of added nitrate to exhibit higher relative growth rates, probably due to the additive effect of substrate nitrogen and fixation of atmospheric nitrogen. The mean numbers of nodules per plant were, with the exception of Alnus, significantly higher at intermediate levels of added nitrate, as were mean nodule dry weights. A highly significant inverse relationship between nodule weight as a percentage of whole plant weight was found in Elaeagnus and Myrica. The observed response of Elaeagnus to added nitrate compared to other actinorhizal plants appears to demonstrate that root hair infected plants are much more sensitive to the inhibitory effects of added nitrate than plants infected by intercellular penetration. A sharp reduction in the presence of root hairs at high concentrations of nitrate was observed. This indicates that the inhibition of nodulation in some actinorhizal plant species results from nitrate induced root hair suppression.  相似文献

Summary We measured variation in gender among individuals within populations of ragweed (Ambrosia artemisiifolia) in an abandoned old-field and in the greenhouse. There was great variability in sex expression, from all-female to approximately 78% male. Plants differed significantly in gender in different locations within the field. Plants in an area abandoned from agriculture one year previously were more male than plants in a nearby area abandoned four years previously. In the greenhouse, soil moisture treatments and levels of attack by spittlebugs (Philaenus spumarius) did not affect gender. Height was positively correlated with relative maleness in both populations. Plants with greater shoot weight were relatively more male in the greenhouse, but not in the field. The gender variation we observed either has a genetic basis or is controlled by environmental variables other than those we investigated.  相似文献

Anoda cristata is a widelydistributed annual weed in Mexico, which grows as agrestal or naturally indisturbed and undisturbed vegetation, respectively. Plants of this species aretolerated in orchards and corn-bean fields by Mexican ethnic groups ofCentral Mexico. Leaves of the plants are used as a food source, andoccasionallyseeds are sown in orchards. Because Mexicans have used Anodacristata for a long time, it is possible that ecological andmorphological characteristics of managed populations differ from those of wildpopulations. In this study, we analyzed phenotypic responses of two populationsof A. cristata (wild and agrestal) growing in twohabitats (forest and cultivated field) comparing survivorship, andlife history traits. Natural progenies from wild and agrestal populations ofA. cristata were transplanted into a cultivated field andin the understory of a pine forest in a reciprocal transplant experiment.Results showed that the habitat of transplant and the origin of populations hadsignificant effect on all plant characters measured (growth, phenology, andbiomass allocation), but the habitat x origin interaction wasnon-significant. In general, plants from the agrestal population grewfaster, reproduced earlier, and allocated more biomass to reproduction, thanplants from the wild population. Similarly, significant effects of habitat andorigin on plant survivorship were detected, but the origin of populationsexplained the largest proportion of variance in plant survival. Most traitswerephenotypically plastic but there were no differences in the magnitude ordirection of the response between populations. In contrast both populationsshowed differentiation for most character mean values. Populationdifferentiation is possibly the result of genetic differences driven byprocesses other than incipient domestication.  相似文献

Differentiation in the size and number of seeds among populations or particular individuals of a given species may depend on genetic features and environmental conditions. The objective of our study was to answer two questions: whether any differences exist in the size and shape of utricles among Carex spicata populations growing in several plant communities and whether the hypothesized differences remain constant in ‘common garden’ conditions (i.e. if the sedges grown in different plant communities are evolving distinctly separate ecotypes). We studied utricle morphological traits (projected area, width, length, W/L ratio and projected perimeter) and number of utricles per spike collected from plants grown in five different plant communities (natural sites) and from plants transferred to common garden conditions. C. spicata utricles showed significant variability of morphological traits that depended on the plant community of origin. Among five plant communities, the largest utricles were found in Agropyron repens–Urtica dioica and Convolvulo arvensis–Agropyretum repentis communities, while the smallest ones were in plants from the Lolio-Plantaginetum community. The similarity of the analyzed populations regarding sedge utricle traits corresponded to the similarity of plant communities where the populations had grown. Moreover, the differences in utricle traits collected from natural conditions remained stable in common garden conditions. This indicated that differences in traits among utricles had a physiological dependence on different biotope conditions or different interspecific interactions prevailing in the particular plant communities. The relationship between the similarities in the diaspores of the populations studied and the similarities in the ecological conditions of the communities may also indicate that the variability of utricles is important for evolution and adaptation.The results support the hypothesis that C. spicata populations in different communities are producing separate ecotypes, i.e. specific species forms with genetically fixed traits adapted to narrowly determined habitat conditions.  相似文献

Populations of the lizards Anolis carolinensis and A. sagrei were experimentally introduced onto small islands in the Bahamas. Less than 15 years after introduction, we investigated whether the populations had diverged and, if so, whether differentiation was related to island vegetational characteristics or propagule size. No effect of founding population size was evident, but differentiation of A. sagrei appears to have been adaptive, a direct relationship existed between how vegetationally different an experimental island was from the source island and how much the experimental population on that island had diverged morphologically. Populations of A. carolinensis had also diverged, but were too few for quantitative comparisons. A parallel exists between the divergence of experimental populations of A. sagrei and the adaptive radiation of Anolis lizards in the Greater Antilles; in both cases, relative hindlimb length and perch diameter are strongly correlated. This differentiation could have resulted from genetic change or environmentally-driven phenotypic plasticity. Laboratory studies on A. sagrei from a population in Florida indicate that hindlimb length exhibits adaptive phenotypic plasticity. Further studies are required to determine if the observed differences among the experimental populations are the result of such plasticity. Regardless of whether the differences result from plasticity, genetic change, or both, the observation that anole populations differentiate rapidly and adaptively when exposed to novel environmental conditions has important implications for understanding the adaptive radiation of Caribbean anoles.  相似文献

As a first step in determining the identity and relative importance of the evolutionary forces promoting the speciation process in two closely related European taxa of Aquilegia, we investigated the levels of morphological variation in floral and vegetative characters over the narrow region where their ranges enter into contact, and evaluate the relative importance of both types of traits in their differentiation. A total of 12 floral and ten vegetative characters were measured on 375 plants belonging to seven A. vulgaris populations and six A. pyrenaica subsp. cazorlensis populations located in southeastern Spain. Floral and vegetative morphological differentiation occur between taxa and among populations within taxa, but only vegetative characters (particularly plant height and leaf petiolule length) contribute significantly to the discrimination between taxa. Differentiation among populations within taxa is mostly explained by variation in floral traits. Consequently, morphological divergence between the two taxa cannot be interpreted as an extension of among-population differences occurring within taxa. Multivariate vegetative, but not floral, similarity between populations could be predicted from geographical distance. Moreover, the key role of certain vegetative traits in the differentiation of A. vulgaris and A. p. cazorlensis could possibly be attributable to the contrasting habitat requirements and stress tolerance strategies of the two taxa. These preliminary findings seem to disagree with the currently established view of the radiation process in the genus Aquilegia in North America, where the differentiation of floral traits seems to have played a more important role.  相似文献

Growth, water content, osmotic pressure and solute content were examined for normal potato (Solanum tuberosum L. cv. Desiree) and a derivative (line D9X8a), which was genetically transformed with TL-DNA from Agrobacterium rhizogenes. Plants were grown (i) in vitro, (ii) in a growth chamber and (iii) in the field. In vitro, the transformed potato plants produced more biomass than the untransformed plants, partly because they had a higher water content. Potassium concentration and osmotic pressure were lower in cell sap extracted from the transformed potato shoots. In some cases the difference was as much as 50%. These differences were less clear, absent or reversed in plants from a growth chamber or from the field. In the field, however, transformed potato senesced early. With an autotrophic, N-free medium, Xanthobacter populations were isolated from the roots of wetland rice grown under field conditions. Xanthobacter populations ranged from 3.2×104 to 5.1×105 colony-forming units (cfu) g-1 of root and averaged 47-fold higher on the root or rhizoplane than in the neighbouring nonrhizosphere. Characterization studies indicated dissimilarities in carbon utilization and motility among the isolated Xanthobacter strains and other recognized Xanthobacter species. Under gnotobiotic conditions, the population of one isolate, Xanthobacter sp. JW-KR1, increased from 105 to 107 cfu plant-1 1 d after inoculation when a rice plant was present, but declined to numbers below the limit of detection (<104 cfu assembly-1) after 3 d in the absence of a plant. Scanning electron microscopy revealed Xanthobacter as pleomorphic forms on the rhizoplane. To assess the effect of Xanthobacter on plant growth, rice plants were grown under greenhouse conditions in plant assemblies containing sand and half-strength Hoagland's nutrient solution with and without nitrogen. Plants were either inoculated with 105 cfu Xanthobacter g-1 of sand or left uninoculated. After 40 d, plants without nitrogen showed no significant differences in top or root dry weight, plant height, root length, or number of tillers or leaves, whether the plants were inoculated or uninoculated. However, when nitrogen was added, inoculated plants had a significantly larger top dry weight (15%) and number of leaves (19%) than uninoculated plants. Under conditions of added and no added nitrogen, acetylene reduction assays showed Xanthobacter sp. JW-KR1 produced <0.1 (below detection limit) and 7 nmol C2H4 plant-1 h-1, respectively. Under the conditions studied, the results suggest that both Xanthobacter and wetland rice derive some benefits from their association.  相似文献
