Invasive exotic plants often grow fast, reproduce rapidly and display considerable phenotypic plasticity in their invasive range, which may be essential characteristics for successful invasion. However, it remains unclear whether these characteristics are already present in native populations (pre-adaptation hypothesis) or evolve after introduction (genetic shift hypothesis).To test these hypotheses we compared means and phenotypic plasticity of vegetative and reproductive traits between populations of Impatiens glandulifera collected from either the invasive (Norway) or native range (India). Seeds were sown and the resulting plants were exposed to different experimental environments in a glasshouse. We also tested whether trait means and reaction norms harbored genetic variation, as this may promote fitness in the novel environment.We did not find evidence that invasive populations of I. glandulifera grew more vigorously or produced more seeds than native populations. Phenotypic plasticity did not differ between the native and invasive range, except for the number of nodes which was more plastic in the invasive range. Genetic variation in the slope of reaction norms was absent, suggesting that the lack of change in phenotypic plasticity between native and invasive populations resulted from low genetic variation in phenotypic plasticity initially harbored by this species. Post-introduction evolution of traits thus probably did not boost the invasiveness of I. glandulifera. Instead, the species seems to be pre-adapted for invasion.We suggest that differences in habitat between the native and invasive range, more specifically the higher nutrient availability observed in the new environment, are the main factor driving the invasion of this species. Indeed, plants in the more nutrient-rich invasive range had greater seed mass, likely conferring a competitive advantage, while seed mass also responded strongly to nutrients in the glasshouse. Interactions between habitat productivity and herbivore defense may explain the lack of more vigorous growth in the new range.  相似文献

Cleistogamy (self-fertilization in closed flowers) differs from chasmogamy (open-pollinated fertilization) mainly in sustaining selfing. Why numerous species develop both of the reproductive modes on the same individuals has long puzzled biologists. In a novel hypothesis presented here, I propose that cleistogamy could be a means by which inbred lines are created and maintained in natural populations; these lines would continuously experience self-improvement via natural selection and via crosses among lines at the chasmogamous flowers to benefit the populations. Supporting evidence for the hypothesis was found in Impatiens capensis where cleistogamous ovules were fertilized proportionately less (56%) than chasmogamous ovules (67%) in natural populations, but crosses among cleistogamous progeny in the greenhouse led to a nearly 10% increase of fertilized chasmogamous ovules. I established a novel fitness model specific to the cleistogamous species to further examine how various aspects of the mating system affect plant performance. A low inbreeding depression (0.07) was consequently found for the surveyed natural populations of I. capensis , suggesting that the individual-level percentage of cleistogamy and the population-level selfing rate may have evolved in the direction of reducing the overall inbreeding depression. © 2002 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2002, 75 , 543–553.  相似文献

Aims Modelling potential distribution ranges of threatened species is of great significance for their conservation. In this paper, the distribution of potential suitable habitat of Impatiens hainanensis, a limestone-endemic and endangered plant in Hainan Island, was studied to provide scientific basis for their effective in situ conservation and re-introduction of I. hainanensis. Methods Based on eight occurrence sites and 12 environmental variables, the Maximum Entropy (MaxEnt) algorithm and GIS technology were used to create a model linking the distribution ranges of I. hainanensis with environments. With data on five actual distribution sites and five non-occurrence sites, four model evaluation metrics (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC), kappa coefficient, true skill statistic (TSS), overall accuracy) were used to evaluate the predictive performance and accuracy of this model. Important findings The results indicated that the indicative value of all four evaluation metrics were above 0.9, indicating that the MaxEnt model can effectively predict the potential suitable habitats of I. hainanensis. Slope, precipitation of the driest quarter and coefficients of precipitation variation were the three main environmental factors influencing the distribution of I. hainanensis. At present, the most suitable habitat includes western and southern parts of Baisha County, the central and southern parts of Changjiang County, the eastern part of the Dongfang City and northeastern Ledong County, accounting for 1.8% of land area on Hainan Island. Since the potential suitable habitat of I. hainanensis is rare and severely fragmented, the protection of this species is urgent. We suggest to collect the seeds of various geographic populations of I. hainanensis to establish a germplasm resource bank. The most suitable habitat of the species, including Tian’an Village and Jiangbian Village in Dongfang City, northeast of Ledong County (Jiaxi Reserve), should be selected as the priority places for future extensive field surveys and re-introduction. © Chinese Journal of Plant Ecology.  相似文献

Balsam seedlings were inoculated with root-knot nematode Meloidogyne javanica Race-2 and Macrophomina phaseolina either individually or concomitantly, as well as sequentially with an interval of 15?days between the nematode or fungal inoculations to determine whether the interaction was concomitant or sequential. The greater reduction in plant growth characters was observed in the plants inoculated with M. javanica and M. phaseolina, either concomitantly or sequentially as compared to their individual inoculation. However, the highest reduction in plant growth characters were recorded in the plants inoculated with M. javanica Race-2 15?days prior to M. phaseolina followed by concomitant-inoculated M. javanica Race-2 and M. phaseolina, and M. phaseolina 15?days prior to M. javanica. The number of galls/root system and the reproduction factor of the root-knot nematode was reduced in the presence of root-rot fungus. The intensity of root-rot caused by M. phaseolina increased in the presence of root-knot nematode M. javanica as compared to when M. phaseolina was inoculated individually. Moreover, stem and collar-rot symptoms caused by M. phaseolina appeared only in the presence of root-knot nematode.  相似文献

The main aim of presented study was the comparison of various extraction methods for the quantitative and qualitative analysis (LC-ESI–MS/MS) of phenolic acids present in extracts obtained from leaves, flowers, and roots of Impatiens glandulifera. The accelerated solvent extraction (ASE) at three temperature ranges (80° C, 100° C, and 120° C), ultrasound assisted extraction (USAE) at 60° C, and traditional extraction in Soxhlet apparatus were used. Taking into account the extraction yield, and the diversity of the individual compounds, ultrasound assisted extraction proved to be the most efficient method, and it was used to determine the content of phenolic acids in leaves of four other Impatiens species, including I. balsamina, I. noli-tangere, I. parviflora, and I. walleriana. Eleven phenolic acids were identified in all examined species. These were protocatechuic, gentisic, 4- hydroxybenzoic, vanillic, trans-caffeic, syringic, trans-p-coumaric, trans- and cis-ferulic, salicylic, and 3-hydroxycinnamic acids. In the extract from the leaves of I. balsamina and I. walleriana, gallic and cis-p-coumaric acids were found additionally. The most abundant compounds in all examined extracts were protocatechuic and 3-hydroxycinnamic acids. The latest acid was found in the highest yield in I. noli-tangere (266.12 μg/g DW). In the leaves of I. glandulifera a great amount of 4-hydroxybenzoic (41.44 μg/g DW), vanillic (61.50 μg/g DW), and trans-p-coumaric (58.42 μg/g DW) acids was also observed. Our results indicate that protocatechuic, 4-hydroxybenzoic, vanillic, trans-p-coumaric, trans-ferulic, and 3-hydroxycinnamic acids were most characteristic of Impatiens species.Additionally, various phenolic-rich extracts from leaves, flowers, and roots of Impatiens glandulifera were tested for antioxidant activity. The highest antiradical activity was detected for roots using Soxhlet extraction (EC50 = 0.055 mg [DE/ml]).The study demonstrated that members of the genus Impatiens, and in particular Impatiens glandulifera, and Impatiens noli-tangere, contain significant amounts of phenolic acids. In addition, extracts from various parts of I. glandulifera could be interesting as novel sources of natural antioxidants.  相似文献

The aim was to estimate the impacts of invasive Impatiens parviflora on forests' herbal layer communities. A replicated Before-After-Control-Impact field experiment and comparisons with adjacent uninvaded plots were used. The alien's impact on species richness was tested using hierarchical generalized mixed effect models with Poisson error structure. Impact on species composition was tested using multivariate models (DCA, CCA, RDA) and Monte-Carlo permutation tests. Removal plots did not differ in native species richness from neither invaded nor adjacent uninvaded plots, both when the treatment's main effect or its interaction with sampling time was tested (Chi(2)?=?0.4757, DF?=?2, p?=?0.7883; Chi(2)?=?7.229, DF?=?8, p?=?0.5121 respectively). On the contrary, ordination models revealed differences in the development of plots following the treatments (p?=?0.034) with the invaded plots differing from the adjacent uninvaded (p?=?0.002). Impatiens parviflora is highly unlikely to impact native species richness of invaded communities, which may be associated with its limited ability to create a dense canopy, a modest root system or the fact the I. parviflora does not represent a novel and distinctive dominant to the invaded communities. Concerning its potential impacts on species composition, the presence of native clonal species (Athyrium filix-femina, Dryopteris filix-mas, Fragaria moschata, Luzula luzuloides, Poa nemoralis) on the adjacent uninvaded plots likely makes them different from the invaded plots. However, these competitive and strong species are more likely to prevent the invasion of I. parviflora on the adjacent uninvaded plots rather than being themselves eliminated from the invaded communities.  相似文献

Invasive alien species are a major threat to ecosystems. Invasive terrestrial plants can produce allelochemicals which suppress native terrestrial biodiversity. However, it is not known if leached allelochemicals from invasive plants growing in riparian zones, such as Impatiens glandulifera, also affect freshwater ecosystems. We used mesocosms and laboratory experiments to test the impact of I. glandulifera on a simplified freshwater food web. Our mesocosm experiments show that leachate from I. glandulifera significantly reduced population growth rate of the water flea Daphnia magna and the green alga Acutodesmus obliquus, both keystone species of lakes and ponds. Laboratory experiments using the main allelochemical released by I. glandulifera, 2‐methoxy‐1,4‐naphthoquinone, revealed negative fitness effects in D. magna and A. obliquus. Our findings show that allelochemicals from I. glandulifera not only reduce biodiversity in terrestrial habitats but also pose a threat to freshwater ecosystems, highlighting the necessity to incorporate cross‐ecosystem effects in the risk assessment of invasive species.  相似文献
