The effects of acceleration and delay of puberty in female house mice on survival and reproduction were tested using 6 experimental groups: (1) control females mated at the time of first oestrus, (2) females mated at weaning, (3) females treated with male urine starting at weaning and mated at first oestrus, (4) females housed in groups and mated at first oestrus, (5) females housed alone, treated with urine from grouped females and mated at first oestrus, and (6) females housed alone and mated at 68 days of age. Females caged with males at weaning or treated with male urine and mated at puberty had lower rates of survival to 180 days of age, but did not differ in rates of fertility from mice in the other four treatments. Those females that were housed with males from weaning or treated with male urine also had smaller total numbers of litters, fewer total young, and smaller average litter sizes than did females for which the age of mating was delayed, by grouping or treatment with urine from grouped females, or by being held until age 68 days before mating. Control females mated at first oestrus generally were intermediate or did not differ from the male treatments on these dependent variables. There were no differences in the average number of female young/litter across the 6 treatments. However, females that were delayed in age of first mating had significantly more male young/litter than did females that were accelerated in their sexual development or control females.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Using the number of large ovarian follicles (Type 8) as an indicator of sexual maturation we found that urinary compounds released by adult males accelerated puberty while urine from females suppressed hormonal activity in juvenile female European pine voles. The release of chemosignals that delayed puberty of juvenile females was not influenced by ovarian hormones; urine from ovariectomized females was as effective as urine from unoperated animals.  相似文献

Pouched mice were kept under controlled conditions of illumination (10D:14L) and temperature (22 +/- 2 degrees C). Age at vaginal opening, first oestrus and first conception did not differ significantly between juvenile females raised singly, in single-sex groups of 5, or with an adult male. After the introduction of a male, sterile cycles and/or matings before first conception were experienced by all females whether they were raised singly or in single-sex groups. Of 10 females raised with a male, 4 conceived at their first mating. Onset of puberty in juvenile females raised with an adult female was delayed, while in juvenile females raised with their families (mother, father and litter mates) only vaginal opening was delayed. However, when raised in family groups without the father, vaginal opening as well as first oestrus were delayed. Grouping of females after weaning, with or without a male, did not change the oestrous cycle pattern. Females in these groups cycled independently of each other and the females grouped with a male also mated and conceived independently of each other. Pregnancy was blocked in 7 of 8 females when the stud male was removed and a strange male was introduced. In females exposed to a succession of males, pregnancy was blocked up to 4 times.  相似文献

Identification of puberty-accelerating pheromones in male mouse urine   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry was employed to identify the two volatile amines in male mouse urine. These amines were much less concentrated in urine of castrated males. The identified amines, isobutylamine and isoamylamine, were assayed for the potential of puberty acceleration in postweaning female mice. A total of 105 young female mice were exposed to one of the following five odors: distilled water (control), 0.1 M isobutylamine, 0.1 M isoamylamine, a mixture of 0.05 M isobutylamine and 0.05 M isoamylamine, or fresh male mouse urine. The mixture of these amines accelerated the vaginal opening of young females. Except for the control, all experimental odors accelerated the first vaginal estrus in ICR strain mice.  相似文献

In male and female rats the endogenous steroid and gonadotrophin secretion was inhibited by injecting high doses of chlormadinone acetate (CmAc) from day 14 to 24 of life, i. e. during the period of brain maturation. In adulthood the males treated prepubertally with CmAc exhibited reduced sexual activity and fertility, whereas the females did not differ from the controls. More complete sex hormone deficiency during brain maturation was achieved by castration on day 14 of life. Controls were castrated at normal puberty time (40--60 days). Both groups were then substituted with androgens or oestrogens. In the females castrated on day 14 no impairment of sexual behaviour was observed as compared to the later castrated controls. In contrast, the early castrated males showed delayed onset of mounting behaviour. At autopsy, the weights of their sex organs were found to be lower than in the controls despite equal testosterone replacement for several months. These findings speak in favour of a permanently diminished responsiveness to androgens in males having been exposed to more or less severe androgen deficiency during sex specific brain maturation. Hence, the maturation of a male hypothalamus as well as the differentiation appears to depend at least in part on the presence of androgens, whereas in females it runs without hormonal influence.  相似文献

The experiments examined the timing, duration and possible enhancement effects of group contact on the delay of sexual maturation produced in prepubertal female house mice by urine from grouped females. One or three days of pheromone stimulation at specified ages during the first 2 weeks after weaning was not sufficient to delay puberty in females caged singly. However, pheromone treatment for 7 days, beginning during the first week after weaning, did significantly delay the onset of first vaginal oestrus relative to control females treated with water. Both the timing and duration of pheromone stimulation appear to be critical factors affecting pheromone-induced delay of sexual maturation. Mean ages at first oestrus for females housed with a group of 7 other females, for 3 or 7 days at specified ages during the first 2 weeks after weaning, did not differ from mean ages recorded with urine stimulation only. Contact with other females does not appear to alter or enhance the delay-of-maturation effect achieved with urine stimulation. In all these respects the maturation-delay pheromone of grouped female mice appears to differ from the puberty-accelerating pheromone of male mice.  相似文献

Age at maturity, a particularly important parameter in the life history of small mammals, contributes greatly to fitness. Social influences on age at maturity have been demonstrated for altricial rodents, in particular, mice. Nothing is known about such effects in precocial small mammals. Wild cavies Cavia aperea are born in a highly precocial state and mature early in life, briefly after weaning. We investigated whether the wild cavy C. aperea and the domestic guinea-pig Cavia aperea f. porcellus reach maturity earlier in the presence of adults of the opposite sex. Juvenile females kept in pairs without males showed first vaginal opening (=oestrus) when 59 days old in cavies and at about 40 days in the guinea-pig. However, in the company of adult males, cavy females kept in pairs reached maturity when about 30 days old, and guinea-pig females when 26 days old. Most cavy females experienced successful pregnancy following first vaginal opening. In cavies, female mass at birth and at first oestrus was not correlated with age at first oestrus. In guinea-pigs, birth mass predicted age at maturity only when a male was present. The growth rate from birth to first oestrus related to age at first oestrus. In the wild cavy, the presence of a male appeared to influence maturation more between days 25 and 30 than earlier in life. Male C. aperea matured and had fully descended testes when about 65–70 days old. All male cavies produced abundant motile sperm from day 75. First successful copulations occurred at about the same age. Surprisingly, the priming effect of the presence of an adult male on female maturation proved stronger in these highly precocial caviomorphs than in altricial rodents investigated so far.  相似文献

Adult male mice (Mus musculus) which have a prior history ofexperience with other adult male and adult female mice readilyproduce 70 kHz ultrasonic vocalizations in the presence of urinefrom adult females but not in the presence of urine from adultmales. Urine from immatures of either sex does not elicit ultrasoundsfrom socially experienced adult males. The ultrasound elicitingpotency of adult male urine was not improved substantially followingcastration of adult males, injection of testosterone propionateto castrated adult males, administration of estradiol benzoateto castrated adult males, or neonatal castration. Ovarian hormonesdo not appear to be necessary for either the appearance at puberty,or the maintenance during adulthood, of the ultrasound elicitingcues of female urine. Stage of estrus did not have a major modulatingeffect on urinary cues eliciling male ultrasounds. Treatmentsthat did not substantially reduce the signal value of adultfemale urine include ovariectomy before or after puberty, ovariectomywith adrenalectomy, and neonatal administration of testosterone. The administration of testosterone to ovariectomized adult females, and hypophyseclomy, virtually eliminated the ability of urinefrom adult females to elicit ultrasounds from socially experiencedadult males. The implication of pituitary hormones in the modulationof female urinary cues thai elicit ultrasounds is particularlyinteresting since pituitary factors are also implicated in theproximal causation of postparturient maternal aggression, whichadult male ultrasounds may function to moderate.

The effects of varying dose levels and mixing of urine from various types of donor mice on the age of sexual maturation in female mice were tested. Over the range from 0.001 ml/day to 0.01 ml/day, there was no difference in the effectiveness of male urine in producing acceleration of puberty, nor was there any difference over the same dose range for urine from grouped females bringing about a delay of puberty. Urine from pregnant and lactating females brought about earlier puberty when applied in the higher dose amounts but was not effective in altering the age of first oestrus relative to untreated controls at lower doses. These findings concerning dose levels are important for a full understanding of the behavioural consequences of urinary chemosignals. When urine from different sources was mixed, all treatments which involved urine from grouped females produced delays in first oestrus. The second finding has important consequences for a feedback model for population regulation in house mice involving urinary chemosignals that accelerate or delay sexual maturation and thus shorten or lengthen generation time by affecting reproductive behaviour.  相似文献

The effect of epidermal growth factor (EGF) on sexual maturation of female rats was studied. A within-litter experimental design was employed, so that in each litter each female received four daily injections of EGF (E, 500 ng/g body weight s.c.) or vehicle (V), at one of three ages: days 0-3 (E1, V1), days 8-11 (E2, V2), days 16-19 (E3, V3). Body weight, pinna detachment, incisor eruption, eye opening, auditory startle, visual placing, vaginal opening and first cytological oestrus were assessed. Neonatal treatment with EGF (E1) delayed pinna detachment and the appearance of the auditory startle, but accelerated eye opening. Also, E1, but not E2 and E3, resulted in lower body weight at weaning. Treatment E3 advanced sexual maturation, as indicated by vaginal opening and first cytological oestrus, by 5-6 days. E1 and E2 had no such effect. Hence the sensitive period for the effect of EGF on female rat sexual maturation is later than that for effects on other developmental characteristics and body weight. In a second experiment, ovary and uterus weights were found not to differ between E3 and V3 females killed on the day of vaginal opening of the E3 rats, suggesting that the effect of EGF may be specifically on the perineal epithelium and not on sexual maturation generally.  相似文献

Male prairie deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus bairdii) were treated from weaning until 8 weeks of age with chemical stimuli from conspecifics or with control substances. Growth of the testes and seminal vesicles was retarded in males that were reared in contact with soiled bedding material transferred from cages of adult males. No additional inhibition resulted from the physical presence of an adult male either continuously or for 1 hr per day. Application of urine collected from adult males to the noses of young males retarded seminal vesicle growth. Removal of the olfactory bulbs of males at 3 weeks of age blocked the inhibitory influence of urine on sexual maturation. Exposure to urine from adult females did not alter the growth of the reproductive organs in young males. The ability of a male deer mouse to retard the sexual maturation of young male conspecifics (Bediz, G. M., and Whitsett, J. M., 1979, J. Comp. Physiol. Psychol.93, 493–500) appears to be a consequence of chemical stimuli excreted in its urine.

The sexual maturation of male mice reared under constant laboratory conditions was studied in animals born in different months of the year. The body weights were significantly affected by the month of birth. Males born in March and May were heavier at 4 and 5 weeks of age than those born in autumn and winter. As indicated by the relative weights of accessory glands, males born in spring matured earlier compared with animals born in other months of the year. Variation in the relative testicular weights during maturation was not influenced by the month of birth. Female mice also showed a significant relationship between the month of birth and sexual maturation. Females born in March reached puberty, as measured by the age of vaginal opening and first oestrus, earlier than those born in other months of the year.  相似文献

A sequence of six experiments using wild stock house mouse (Mus domesticus) tested the effects of intermittent stimulation with either the urinary chemosignal released by grouped female mice or social contact from grouped females on the age of first vaginal oestrus in young females. Weanling female mice were exposed to bedding soiled by grouped females or cages containing grouped females for 15 min periods, then removed for a prescribed period, and placed again in a cage with soiled bedding or grouped females. The nature of the exposure to the puberty delaying effect, the number of total exposures each day, the total length of exposure to the stimulus, and the total time period over which the exposures occurred were varied. None of the treatment regimes employed here with soiled bedding from grouped females resulted in delays in the onset of first oestrus in test females. Young females exposed to grouped females for 6 or 8 exposures in a 4 h period, 6 or 8 exposures in an 8 h period, or 8 exposures in a 12 h period were significantly delayed in attaining puberty relative to control females that were exposed to cages containing clean bedding. These results are in contrast to earlier findings involving chemosignals that accelerate first oestrus wherein young females exhibited the capacity to accumulate the exposures to the urinary chemosignals from males, females in oestrus and pregnant or lactating females. Direct exposure to the grouped females on an intermittent basis can provide stimulation that is cummulative and results in delays in the onset of first oestrus.  相似文献

Four behavioral experiments involving a total of 19 adult male and 27 adult spayed female rhesus monkeys failed to reveal significant sexual stimulatory properties of vaginal lavages obtained from estrogen-treated donor females when the material was applied to spayed nonestrogenized recipient females. However, all but one of the males copulated to ejaculation when paired with estrogenized females. Two of three males showed moderate increases in sexual behavior with recipients when the vaginal lavage tested was contaminated with 24-hr-old ejaculate. When purified aliphatic acids were applied to spayed nonestrogenized recepients, one of two males showed increased frequencies of mounting behavior, but intromissions and ejaculations were not displayed.Quantitative analyses of short chain aliphatic acids in vaginal lavages, the hypothesized active component, revealed that (a) spayed females had nondetectable levels of aliphatic acids; (b) daily estradiol benzoate treatment for 6–10 days (25 μg/day i.m.) induced detectable levels of acetic, propionic, and butyric acids; (c) exposure to estradiol for six months resulted in a fairly constant plateau of aliphatic acid concentrations; and (d) ejaculate from the male caused up to fivefold elevations in the aliphatic acid concentrations.Three intact females were studied throughout a menstrual cycle, and the peak values of aliphatic acids occurred in the luteal phase, several days after presumed ovulation. Three spayed females treated chronically with estradiol were given four daily injections of 5 mg progesterone, and the mean concentrations of aliphatic acids increased from 199.7 to 801.0 μg/ml. However, the endocrine conditions associated with maximum concentrations of aliphatic acids in either intact or spayed females are known from other studies to be associated with decreased likelihood of copulation. We conclude that for the majority of males studied, the application of vaginal lavages obtained from estrogenized donors did not significantly increase copulatory behavior with spayed, nonestrogenized recipient females. Moreover, the data from aliphatic acid determinations suggest that increases in concentrations of these substances are not always associated with facilitation of copulation, since the largest increases were found either (1) following copulation to ejaculation, (2) during the luteal phase in cycles free of copulation, or (3) following progesterone treatment of spayed, estrogenized females. Finally, comparison of our results with those from other laboratories suggests that the mechanism involved in positive effects may depend upon associative learning or upon extinction and disinhibition of sexual interest.  相似文献

The behavioral responses of sexually experienced male hamsters toward a pair of anesthetized conspecifics were investigated. Males spent significantly more time licking, sniffing, and mounting neonatally and adult castrated males than intact males. Adult castrated males receiving oil injections were preferred over castrates receiving exogenous testosterone propionate (TP). Ovariectomized females were preferred over intact males, adult castrated males, or spayed females receiving exogenous TP. It was concluded that the absence of an androgen-dependent factor(s) renders an animal more sexually attractive.  相似文献

A sequence of 17 experiments was used to test the effects of intermittent stimulation with urinary chemosignals on the age of puberty in young female mice. The three chemosignals tested all accelerate the age of sexual maturation: urine from adult males, urine from females in estrus, and urine from females that are pregnant or lactating. The basic technique involved presenting the prepubertal females with 'Nestlets' on which the urine was placed. The 'Nestlets' were placed in the cages of the test females for a 15-min period, removed for a variable period, and then replaced in the cage for 15 min. In this manner it was possible to vary the number of exposures, the total length of exposure, and the total time period over which the exposures occurred. Control procedures, involving exposures of young females to cotton squares with water rather than urine placed upon them, resulted in no alterations in puberty relative to untreated females. For mice exposed to the urine-treated cotton squares, acceleration of puberty occurred with less total stimulus-exposure time when the stimulus was presented in short exposures over a number of hours than in previous investigations when the exposure to the urinary chemosignal occurred in a single block of time of one or two hours. For each of the three acceleratory chemosignals, there was a diminution of acceleratory effect when the ratio of total stimulus-exposure time to total exposure time grew smaller. This diminution was more pronounced for urine from pregnant or lactating females than for urine from males or from females in estrus.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Adult rhesus monkeys were observed in standardized tests for female-typical sexual and related social responses. In the first experiment reported, 7 castrated males and 5 spayed females were paired with each of 4 intact males on two occasions following intramuscular injection with estradiol benzoate (EB) (6 micrograms/kg X 14 days) and on two other occasions without such treatment. In tests without EB, males and females did not behave differently toward the intact male partners, and all responses were displayed at low frequencies. In tests with EB, females showed reliably higher frequencies than males of approaching, sitting close to, grooming, and soliciting, and they presented to a higher proportion of the male partner's sexual contacts. EB reliably increased the frequency of display of all of these same five responses in females but not in castrated males. The intact male partners displayed reliably fewer approaches, sexual contacts, mounts, intromissions, and ejaculations to castrated males than to spayed females regardless of estrogenization. In a second experiment 10 intact adult pseudohermaphroditic females and 6 intact control females were tested following EB injections with each of the same 4 intact males. Pseudohermaphrodites were experimentally produced by injecting pregnant females with either testosterone propionate (TP) or dihydrotestosterone propionate (DHTP). Pseudohermaphrodites, regardless of type of androgen used in their production, showed reliably fewer solicits than controls to male partners. Moreover, they displayed most of the other responses at lower average frequencies than controls. Frequencies of intromission and ejaculation by intact male partners were reliably lower with pseudohermaphrodites than with control females, but frequencies of approach, sexual contact, and mount were not reliably different. We conclude that in this testing and measurement situation male and female rhesus monkeys differ markedly in the degree of expression of female-typical sexual behaviors, and genotypic males are behaviorally less responsive to estrogens than females. Exposing genotypic females to androgens during fetal life decreases the expression of female-typical, estrogen-influenced responses, and the effect is most pronounced on those soliciting responses that subserve proceptivity.  相似文献

Among nocturnal Malagasy prosimians, the grey mouse lemur (Microcebus murinus) is considered a solitary species which has a promiscuous mating system. Indirect indicators, such as the lack of sexual dimorphism, the overlapping of male and female home ranges with each other, the synchronism of seasonal oestrus and the high relative testes size of males, support the presence of sperm competition. In captivity, an intense sexual precopulatory competition develops among males, leading to the emergence of a dominant male who fathers the majority of the litters. Although multiple mating did occur, the dominant male achieved the majority of the matings on the first day of oestrus. A 'mate-guarding' behaviour, exhibited by the dominant male, was observed in 11 groups out of 15, on only the first day of the vaginal opening and was significantly more often directed towards younger females. Females also played an important role in sexual competition among males, since their presence enhances the aggressive interactions between males. Difference in aggressive behaviours of females, in response to male sexual solicitations, suggests female mate choice. Compared with data from wild animals, it may be hypothesised that alternative mating strategies can be used by male grey mouse lemurs to enhance their reproductive success, depending on the availability and distribution of receptive females.  相似文献
