Levels of PCBs, HCB and Hg were determined in the muscle tissue of flounder (Platichthys flesus L.), sampled at two sites of the highly industrialized Elbe estuary which is characterized by a decreasing gradient of contaminant levels in water and sediments towards the mouth of the river. The contaminant levels were compared to those found in muscle tissue of flounders caught in an unpolluted reference area, the Eider estuary. Juvenile flounders (1–2 cm total length) caught during their migration from the southern North Sea coast into the Elbe estuary in early summer showed a significantly higher level of contamination at both Elbe stations than those from the reference area. In the following spring, the flounders, having grown to a length of 12–14 cm, reflected the gradient of contaminants measured in water and sediment. However, during summer and late autumn a drastic increase in average contaminant concentration was observed in the muscle tissue of flounders taken from the less polluted estuarine site. It became evident that severe oxygen depletion in the heavily polluted area near Hamburg had provoked the migration of highly contaminated fish downstream to the less polluted sampling area; thus intermingling with the less contaminated flounder population of this region had occurred. The results obtained indicate that careful analysis of environmentally controlled behavioural patterns in the species used for monitoring purposes as well as an appropriate statistical treatment of the data gained from chemical analysis are essential for assessing the contaminant concentrations in organisms in relation to the pollution load of their habitats.  相似文献

The factors influencing the selection of food by flounders, Platichthys flesus (L.), have been investigated by analysing collections made in the Severn Estuary for 1 year and the results of experiments. Flounders measuring between 6–0 and 35 cm fed heavily on the polychaete Nereis diversicolor in February and on the amphipod Gammarus salinus between February and April. Thereafter these species were replaced by the mysid Neomysis integer with the decapod Crangon vulgaris. Flounders shorter than 6.0 cm, fed mainly on Neomysis integer regardless of month. Numerous factors were involved in the choice of the food including (1) the maximum and minimum length of prey, (2) its spatial distribution in the water column, (3) its degree of concealment, (4) its motility and ability to escape predation, (5) conditioning of the flounders for certain foods, (6) the fish's swimming speed and (7) the turbidity and temperature of the water.
Although the average length of ingested prey remained unchanged as the fish grew in size, an increase in the maximum and minimum lengths was observed. The percentage of stomachs that contained no identifiable remains in flounders greater than 6–0 cm averaged 80–95 % during part of the winter and 60% in the summer and between January and March. These changes partly reflected the influence of low water temperature on the metabolic rate and availability of prey. The dry weight of the stomach contents in flounders longer than 6–0 cm was lowest in winter but high values were recorded in the spring. This latter feature was probably because the rate of feeding was greater than that of digestion. During the summer, under more normal feeding conditions, the weight of the stomach contents remained relatively low compared to other fish populations. Flounders shorter than 6–0 cm always contained more food in their stomachs on a unit weight basis than larger individuals, reflecting metabolic rate and hunting efficiency.  相似文献

Otoliths from 640 flounders from the River Frome, a chalk river in southern England, were used for age and growth studies together with length-frequency data. Mean lengths at ages I–V were 89, 151, 225, 304 and 323 mm respectively; these are higher than have been reported for marine populations. All flounders caught were immature and, on reaching the sea, both sexes probably became sexually mature a year older than did the marine populations. Flounder diets in freshwater comprised largely aquatic insects, Mollusca and Crustacea but there were differences between large and small fish; seasonal changes in diet largely reflected prey availability. It is suggested that competition for food and space in estuaries between 0 group flounders have given rise to the migration into fresh water.  相似文献

The status of flounders as hosts of Pomphorhynchus laevis and its survival in both freshwater and marine habitats was studied in the wild and by means of laboratory investigations. Natural infections were found in flounders in the euryhaline regions of the River Avon but not in adjacent or distant regions of the English Channel. Pomphorhynchus laevis of freshwater origin survived and grew but did not become sexually mature in natural infections of flounders in the Avon or in flounders maintained in fresh water and sea water in the laboratory. The position of the parasite in the alimentary canal of its host changed in flounders but not in eels in response to the changing conditions within the flounder with increasing salinity. In the Baltic Sea P. laevis grew to a larger size, became sexually mature and occupied a different position, the rectum, in both flounders and plaice. It is suggested that marine and Baltic parasites constitute a different strain of P. laevis , one which completes its entire life cycle in the marine habitat and for which flounder is the preferred host. By contrast, flounders are not even a suitable host for the English freshwater strain of P. laevis although individual parasites may be carried to sea in this and other migratory fish and survive in this medium for varying periods. The sea appears to be a major barrier to dispersal of this freshwater strain, and this largely explains the restricted and discontinuous distribution of the parasite in Britain.  相似文献

Camouflage is a common tactic to avoid detection or recognition by predators and prey. Flounders have adaptive camouflage but a limited body pattern repertoire. We tested whether peacock flounders actively select or avoid certain substrates to more effectively use their limited camouflaging ability. We acquired and analyzed ten 30‐min videos of individual flounders on a coral reef in Bonaire, Dutch Caribbean. Using Manly's beta resource selection indices, we were able to confirm that peacock flounders at this location preferred to settle on neutral‐coloured substrates, such as sand and dead coral. Moreover, they avoided live coral, cyanobacteria, and sponges, which are often brightly coloured (e.g. yellow, orange, and purple). Quantitative analyses of photographs of settled flounders indicate that they use uniform and mottled camouflage patterns, and that the small‐to‐moderate spatial scale of their physiologically controlled light and dark skin components limits their camouflage capabilities to substrates with similar colour and spatial frequencies. These fishes changed their body pattern very fast. We did not observe disruptive body patterns, which are generally characterized by large‐scale skin components and higher contrast. The composition of the parasite fauna of the flounder, Platichthys flesus, retrieved from two locations in the tidal Thames is described in detail for the first time. The combined parasite species list of the flounders from Lots Road in the upper tideway and West Thurrock in the middle tideway consisted of one protozoan (Glugea stephani), one monogenean (Gyrodactylus sp.), four larval digeneans (Cryptocotyle concava, Timoniella imbutiforme, T. praeterita, and Labratrema minimus), five adult digeneans (Derogenes varicus, Lecithaster gibbosus, Podocotyle sp., Plagioporus varius, and Zoogonoides viviparus), one larval cestode (unidentified tetraphyllidean), one or possibly more larval nematodes (unidentified) plus five adult nematodes (Capillaria sp., Cucullanus heterochrous, C. minutus, Contracaecum sp. and Goezia sp.), two acanthocephalans (Pomphorhynchus laevis and Acanthocephalus anguillae), three copepods (Lepeophtheirus pectoralis, Acanthochondria sp. and Lernaeocera branchialis), and one mollusc (unidentified glochidia). The overall parasite community of flounders from Lots Road and West Thurrock were compared in terms of species richness and diversity. The parasite community in flounders from the former location in the upper tideway was found to be less diverse than that of its counterpart at West Thurrock in the middle estuary. The component community of Lots Road flounders was dominated by the acanthocephalan Pomphorhynchus laevis.  相似文献

The use of fish-parasites as biological tags may become an efficient method of tracing the origin of some migratory fish. The helminth parasites of flounders Platichthys flesus (L.) from 2 estuaries and from the sea within a 40 mile range were recorded, and an attempt was made to explain the level of infestation of each species of parasite in the 3 localities in relation to their life-history and the physical nature of the environment. The flounders from the 3 localities were shown to have dissimilar parasite-faunas, and, therefore, it was possible to characterize the parasite-fauna for each of the 3 groups of flounders. Individual fish from each locality could be recognized by its parasite-fauna and especially by the level of certain indicator-parasites. Similarly, "foreign" flounders moving into a flounder population could be picked out by the markedly different composition of their parasite-fauna. Podocotyle sp. and Zoogonoides viviparus were useful indicator-parasites in this instance.  相似文献

Hierarchies readily appear when rearing flounders through metamorphosis in space-limited conditions. In this experiment, subordinate fish were stressed, as suggested by their elevated cortisol level compared to dominant fish. Subordinate fish, although of smaller size than the dominant fish, showed no suppressed digestive capacity. By separating the two hierarchical groups into different tanks at low density, the cortisol level of the subordinate fish substantially decreased. The removal of the stressor also resulted in an increase in digestive function and improved coloration. Also, compensatory growth in length but not in weight was observed in the subordinate group, suggesting that the subordinate fish devoted their energy to increase their length. These results imply that the climax of flounder metamorphosis (i.e. the settlement stage) is a highly sensitive period, where social interactions may induce high levels of stress. However, Japanese flounder early juveniles prove to have a high recovery capacity from stress and show to allocate energy preferentially to growth in length. This seems to be an adaptation to diminish the probability of death by predation.  相似文献

Specimens of flounder Paralichthys orbignyanus (Jenyns, 1842) were collected in Bahía Blanca estuary between February 1997 and January 1998, and their feeding habits were examined in relation to season and size class. The stomach contents of 823 specimens, ranging from 70 to 875 mm total length, were analysed. Their diet included organisms from 17 taxa. The highest vacuity index values were found during autumn and winter. The stomach fullness index indicated that flounders increased their feeding activity between October and March, reaching a highest point in February and decreasing after February. Fish were the primary prey item in frequency, number and weight, followed by crustaceans, such as shrimps and crabs. A seasonal and size class variation was detected in the diet. During summer all-size flounders consumed mainly fish. In autumn, for all-size classes the main food were fish and crustaceans even though fish were dominant in terms of biomass. In spring, crustaceans (mysids Arthromysis magellanica (Cunningham), shrimps Artemesia longinaris Bate, and prawns Pleoticus muelleri (Bate)) were the dominant prey in terms of number and biomass for flounders ≤ 450 mm TL. Size classes larger than 451 mm TL fed on crustaceans and fish though the most important prey item in terms of biomass was fish. In Bahía Blanca estuary,P. orbignyanus evidenced mainly an ichthyophagou – carcinophagous diet. The results collected from the present study lead to conclude that P. orbignyanus shows, in this region, a clear preference for fish.  相似文献

Two species of the family Bothidae (lefteye flounders), Mancopsetta maculata metadata and M. milfordi occur in the south-west Atlantic but are caught rarely by commercial bottom trawlers. Little is therefore known about their general biology from this area. A total of 251 M. maculata and 276 M. milfordi were sampled during deep-water exploratory fishing conducted in November 1994 within the Falkland Islands Interim and Outer Conservation Zones, at depths of 400-1000 m, using standard commercial bottom trawling gear. The two species were found to have similar geographical distributions between 48.30'-53.30'S and 55°-62° W and were often obtained at the same stations in depths of 400-900 m on the continental slope. Mancopsetta maculata maculata showed a uni-modal cohort structure with a modal length at the 29-cm total length size-class. Males of M. m. maculata outnumbered females in a ratio of 3.5 : 1. Mancopsetta milfordi showed a tri-modal length distribution, the main mode at the 37-cm total length size-class, with females outnumbering males in a ratio of 1.1 : 1. Length-weight relationships and length-at-age information are presented for the two species. Diet was determined from the analysis of stomach contents and, although the major prey type for both species consisted of crustaceans, the morid fish Austrophycis marginata also formed an important part of the diet of M. milfordi. Population structure was previously believed to be very limited or absent in classical marine fishes, but recently, evidence of weakly differentiated local populations has been accumulating using noncoding microsatellite markers. However, the evolutionary significance of such minute genetic differences remains unknown. Therefore, in order to elucidate the relationship between genetic markers and adaptive divergence among populations of marine fishes, we combined cDNA microarray and microsatellite analysis in European flounders (Platichthys flesus). We demonstrate that despite extremely low levels of neutral genetic divergence, a high number of genes were significantly differentially expressed between North Sea and Baltic Sea flounders maintained in a long-term reciprocal transplantation experiment mimicking natural salinities. Several of the differentially regulated genes could be directly linked to fitness traits. These findings demonstrate that flounders, despite little neutral genetic divergence between populations, are differently adapted to local environmental conditions and imply that adaptation in gene expression could be common in other marine organisms with similar low levels of population subdivision.  相似文献

Two forms of progranulin mRNA were isolated from kidney and spleen cDNA libraries of the olive flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus. The 3'-untranslated regions (3'-UTRs) of these flounder progranulin (f-pgrn) mRNAs differed in a 20-nucleotide sequence element (5'-AACTGATTACGTTCAACAAC-3') that was present in one mRNA (designated f-pgrn type II) and not in the other (designated f-pgrn type I). Both mRNA sequences contained an open reading frame encoding a 289-amino-acid polypeptide of approximately 33 kDa. Southern blot analysis of the P. olivaceus flounder genome using an f-pgrn cDNA probe and a PCR-based approach identified a single copy of f-pgrn corresponding to the type II mRNA. The expression profiles of the two types of f-pgrn mRNA differed from each other and were tissue- and condition-dependent. The type II mRNA was detected abundantly in studied tissues (gill, kidney, spleen, and intestine) of non-stimulated healthy flounders. The type I mRNA was rarely expressed in any tissues of healthy flounders, but it was continuously increased in the examined tissues of flounders after the intraperitoneal injection of lipopolysaccharide. On the other hand, the expression of type II mRNA was decreased in inverse proportion to the type I mRNA in the LSP-stimulated flounders. These results suggest that type I and type II f-pgrn mRNA are translated into different proteins with different activities in the immune system of flounder.  相似文献

The reproduction of summer flounder, Paralichthys dentatus (L.), occurring in the Middle Atlantic Bight was studied from 1974–1979. Males dominated the length interval between 21–35 cm t.l. and were essentially absent in samples >55 cm t.l. Females were more abundant in all length intervals >45 cm t.l. Length at maturity ranged from 24–27 cm t.l. for males and from 30–33 cm t.l. for females which coincided with length at age two. Ovarian egg diamerter frequencies indicated summer flounders are serial spawners and the trend in mean and maximum maturity indexes (% ovary weight of total fish weight) indicated spawning began in September and continued through February in 1975 and probably into March in 1976. Annual condition cycle of males peaked in September and was lowest in April while females' cycle reached a maximum in October which coincided with peak spawning time. Fecundity was related to length, weight and ovary weight for 1974–1977 and the length-fecundity equation F = 0.0007975 L 3.402 was found to be the best predictive relationship. The overall reproductive strategy of summer flounder was discussed and apparently tends to maximize reproductive potential through an extended spawning season, early maturation, high fecundity, serial spawning and extensive spawning migrations.  相似文献

Summary Cell volume regulation in heart ventricles of the flounderPlatichthys flesus has been studied under hyper-osmotic conditions in vivo and in vitro.During reacclimation of flounders from fresh water to sea water the osmolality of blood plasma increased to the sea water level in 7 days. The water content of the heart ventricle cells remained constant after reacclimation while the intracellular concentration of K+ and taurine increased to values found in sea water flounders.Hearts taken from fresh water flounders were mounted in vitro and perfused with hyper-osmotic ringer solution. Upon perfusion the cellular water content of the ventricle decreased initially but then steadily increased. After 6 h the cellular water content was still below the control values reflecting that the ventricle cells have an incomplete volume regulation in a hyper-osmotic medium. The cellular amount of K+ and taurine increased during the volume regulation. The perfusion media did not contain taurine or amino acids and the gain in cellular taurine must be due to intracellular production.  相似文献

In 2003, 13 isolates of iridovirus were obtained from cultured flounders Paralichthys olivaceus during epizootics in Korea. The full open reading frames (ORFs) encoding the major capsid protein (MCP) (1362 bp) from the 13 flounder iridoviruses (FLIVs) were sequenced and the deduced amino acid sequences were phylogenetically analyzed. Phylogenetic analysis of the MCP revealed that all 13 FLIVs were the same species as rock bream iridovirus (RBIV), red sea bream iridovirus (RSIV), and infectious spleen and kidney necrosis virus (ISKNV), and were grouped into an unknown genus which was different from the 2 genera known to infect fish, Ranavirus and Lymphocystivirus. This is the first report on the isolation and phylogenetic analysis of the iridovirus of unknown genus from flounders during epizootics.  相似文献

The behaviour of the flounder Pleuronectes flesus was observed in an experimental aquarium that consisted of five connected units with decreasing salinity from 20 to 15, 10, 5 and 0·5. This experimental aquarium was highly effective for studying behaviour in salinity gradients, because the gradient was relatively stable. After 4 days of observation, significantly more flounder were found in water with a salinity of 0·5, indicating a preference for fresh water. The total length of the flounders ranged from 7·5 to 21 mm. The majority of larvae had already started eye‐migration, however, the longer specimens had completed metamorphosis. The migration towards low salinities was observed to increase with ontogenetic development.  相似文献

Prespawning winter flounder, Pseudopleuronectes americanus Walbaum, manifest epidermal thickening as a secondary sexual characteristic, but with considerable individual variability. The correlation between epidermal thickness and fish size in post-spawned flounder is less apparent in prespawning flounders due to factors associated with sexual maturation. Thus, epidermal thickness in individual prespawning flounder displays significant correlation with gonadosomatic index and. in females, with the degree of final maturation of vitellogenic oocytes. However, both epidermal thickness and gonadosomatic index of individual flounders also display significant correlation with condition factor. It is proposed that body size and condition factor represent important primary physiological determinants influencing individual variability in seasonal epidermal thickness, and that factors associated with sexual maturation represent a secondary physiological determinant.  相似文献

The winter flounder, Pseudopleuronectes americanus (Walbaum), population off Newfoundland can include a 'non-reproductive post-mature' subset at any time together with 'reproductive' and 'immature' subsets. Skin samples were taken from male and female specimens from each subset in the winter, after reproductive flounder have normally undergone a pre-winter phase of gonadal recrudescence, and also during the spring prespawning period and in the summer following spawning. Results for immature flounder demonstrate that fish size influences epidermal thickness in this species. The epidermis of reproductive flounders is thick, representing a secondary sexual characteristic, during gonadal recrudescence. A thick epidermis is most pronounced on the blind-side, particularly in prespawning males. Although the epidermis of non-reproductive post-mature fish was thinner than in prespawning males and females, it was thicker than in immature flounders. Also, the epidermal thickness of non-reproductive post-mature individuals can still display some seasonal change although gonadal recrudescence has not been sustained. There is also a relationship between condition factor and epidermal thickness which is manifested particularly clearly in immature and non-reproductive post-mature flounder.  相似文献
