Abstract Age-specific mating incidence, sexual maturation and effect of age at mating on reproductive performance of the Parthenium beetle, Zygogramma bicolorata Pallister, was studied. Based on 50% mating incidence the calculated age of sexual maturation of males and females was 10.5 and 11.1 days, respectively, which was not statistically significant. However, on the basis of age at first mating, that is, sexual maturity, females matured 2 days earlier than males. Fecundity, pre-oviposition, oviposition and post-oviposition period and female longevity appear to be influenced by female age at mating with reproductive performance peaking at 30 days. On the other hand, egg viability was influenced by male age and was highest when males mated at the age of 40 days. To summarise, egg production and timing of egg deposition was female age-dependent, whereas egg fertility was male age-dependent. It was also observed that females mated at a later age and laid a higher number of eggs immediately after mating than did earlier mated females. This was ostensibly in a bid to increase fitness by maximizing reproductive output in the reduced life span available. This is the first investigation on the effect of age of females at mating on reproduction in this beetle.

Superparasitism is a widespread phenomenon. Having accepted superparasitism, mated female parasitoids must decide on the sex of each egg they subsequently lay into the same host. Theory predicts that this decision is either based on host quality, when more male eggs are laid in hosts that are already parasitized because they are perceived to be of poorer quality; or more eggs are laid of the sex that is most likely to be a strong larval competitor, i.e. generally females.Anastatus disparis is a facultative endoparasitic egg parasitoid. We used ‘artificial’ hosts to explore outcomes of decision making by A. disparis during superparasitism under a manipulated absence of larval competition. When only one egg was laid it was always female. As the number of eggs laid increased, so more of them were male. This supports the theory that oviposition decisions are based on host quality; more male eggs were laid in hosts that were already parasitized and thus of poorer quality. In a second experiment, eggs were exposed to parasitoids for different periods of time. Half the eggs were dissected to determine the number of parasitoid eggs that had been laid. The remaining eggs were incubated and the number and sex of offspring that ultimately emerged, following larval competition, were recorded. Under superparasitism conditions fierce larval competition ensued; only one offspring survived and they were predominantly female. In conclusion, oviposition decisions by female A. disparis accepting self-superparasitism were made based on host quality.

The frequency of mating in insects is often an important determinant of female reproductive output and male sperm competition. In Lepidoptera that provide male nutrients to the female when mating, it is hypothesized that polyandry may be more prevalent. This is thought to be especially so among species described as income breeders; that is, in species who do not derive all their nutrients for reproductive output entirely from the resources obtained during the larval stage. We selected the geometrid moth, Mnesampela privata (Guenée) (Lepidoptera: Geometridae), to examine this hypothesis further. We found this species was best characterized as an income breeder with female weight on emergence positively correlated with total egg load but not with the number of eggs laid. Further, in accord with income breeders, females emerged with a partially developed egg load and lifetime fecundity was positively correlated with the number of oviposition days. However, in the laboratory we found that incidence of repeated matings or polyandry was rare. When moths were paired singly over their lifetime, only 4% of mated females multiple mated. When females were paired with three males concurrently, female mating success increased from 60 to 81% with multiple mating among mated females increasing to just 15%. Dissection of wild caught M. privata found that polyandry levels were also low with a maximum of 16.4% of females collected at any one time being multiple mated. In accord with theory, mating significantly increased the longevity of females, but not of males, suggesting that females acquire essential resources from male ejaculates. Despite this, multiple mated females showed a trend toward decreasing rather than increasing female reproductive output. Spermatophore size, measured on death of the female, was not correlated with male or female forewing length but was negatively correlated with the number of fertile eggs laid and female longevity. Smaller spermatophore width may be related to uptake of more nutrients by the female from a spermatophore. We discuss our findings in relation to income breeding and its relationship to polyandry in Lepidoptera.

The onset and course of the elimination of eggs in the feces of rats of singly-established Hymenolepis diminuta has been studied. In both male and female hosts, eggs of this tapeworm first appeared about 18 to 20 days after inoculation, and the daily output gradually increased to a fairly stable level which was higher in males (average about 205,000) than in females (average about 167,000). Egg outputs were maintained at these levels for at least 150 days.In male rats on a complete diet the average number of eggs per proglottid was about 2100. Approximately 7.6 cm of strobila was shed daily which is equivalent to about 8% of the worm's length. In female rats on deficient diet there was a drop in egg output to about 50,000 eggs/24 hours in about 30 days whereas in male hosts on deficient diet a comparable drop occurred only after a period of approximately 3 months. In normal male rats on deficient diet there was very little stunting of worm growth. In females on complete diet worm-size approximately equaled that in male rats, but on deficient diet the worms were significantly smaller.Vitamin B12 failed to raise the egg output in two normal female rats on deficient diet.An increase in egg output was associated with administration of male dog bile in both male and female hosts which continued in males until termination of the experiment, but which failed in females and resulted in a subsequent decrease in elimination of eggs. In both sexes there were unusually large fluctuations in egg output from day to day.

Dynamic egg maturation strategies in an aphid parasitoid
Abstract.  Females of the parasitoid Aphelinus albipodus both lay more eggs on younger stages of their aphid host, Aphis glycines , and contain more mature eggs in their ovaries when held with these younger host stages. This suggests that egg maturation is more rapid in the presence of younger host stages. Three factors explaining the difference in the egg loads of A. albipodus females exposed to various host stages are examined. These are (i) the number of host-feeding meals; (ii) the number of eggs laid; and (iii) the host stage utilized. Together, these factors explain 69% of the variance in A. albipodus egg load. The number of host-feeding meals taken by females is a strong predictor of egg load. More host meals are taken on young hosts, suggesting that host feeding contributes to the trend of faster egg maturation in the presence of younger hosts. Host stage has a strong impact on egg load even when the effect of host feeding is accounted for. There is no evidence for an effect of the oviposition rate on egg load. The results indicate that egg maturation by A. albipodus is dynamic; females mature eggs faster when in the presence of preferred hosts. It is hypothesized that this allows A. albipodus females to more closely match their reproductive effort to reproductive opportunities.

Conspecific brood parasitism (CBP) is an alternative reproductive tactic found in many animals with parental care. Parasitizing females lay eggs in the nests of other females (hosts) of the same species, which incubate and raise both their own and the foreign offspring. The causes and consequences of CBP are debated. Using albumen fingerprinting of eggs for accurately detecting parasitism, we here analyse its relation to female condition and clutch size in High Arctic common eiders Somateria mollissima borealis. Among 166 clutches in a Svalbard colony, 31 (19%) contained eggs from more than one female, and 40 of 670 eggs (6%) were parasitic. In 6 cases an active nest with egg(s) was taken over by another female. Many suitable nest sites were unoccupied, indicating that CBP and nest takeover are reproductive tactics, not only consequences of nest site shortage. Similarity in body mass between female categories suggests that condition does not determine whether a nesting female becomes parasitised. There was no evidence of low condition in parasites: egg size was similar in hosts and parasites, and parasitism was equally frequent early and late in the laying season. Meta‐analysis of this and 3 other eider studies shows that there is a cost of being parasitised in this precocial species: host females laid on average 7% fewer eggs than other females.

Differences in the salivary glands, mesenteron epithelium and reproductive organs of female cat fleas, Ctenocephalides felis Bouché (Siphonaptera: Pulicidae), are related to the degree of reproductive maturation or regression. Contrary to previous ideas, blue bodies in the ovarioles are degenerate oocyte nuclei and their presence denotes failure of ripening oocytes to reach full maturity. A distinction between true corpora lutea and pseudo-corpora lutea is established, the presence of the former indicates successful oviposition, and of the latter, failure to complete maturation of eggs. Accurate indicators of sexual maturation and reproductive success are of potential value in assessing relative suitability of various hosts for a given flea species and therefore in assessing the degree of host specificity among fleas.

Summary A pair of the Great Spotted Cuckoo exhibited reproductive behaviour during the years 1968–72. Until 1971 the female laid the eggs in nests of Magpies or Blackbirds which were placed in the aviary. Birds which could serve as hosts at these times were not in the aviary. The female Cuckoo visited the nests before laying an egg quite often and stayed at or in the nests for longer periods.1972 two Rollers were kept together with the Cuckoos and one Roller laid four eggs into a cave of a beech-stump. Now the female Cuckoo tried to deposit its eggs into the Roller's nest and was successful doing so several times. As soon as the female Cuckoo was ready to lay, the male Cuckoo diverted the Roller and so made it possible for the female to get into the Rollers nest. The laying of the egg took only a few seconds.

Abstract. 1. The ovipositional and egg allocation behaviour of individual females of Aphytis melinus DeBach and A.lingnunensis Compere were compared.
2. Both Aphytis species exhibit the same behavioural sequence during oviposition.
3. Aphytis melinus laid most of its female eggs on the dorsum of a scale-insect beneath its cover, and most of its male eggs under the scale-insect's body. Aphytis lingnanensis also oviposited both dorsally and ventrally on scale-insect hosts, but female and male progeny arose with equal frequency from eggs laid in both locations.
4. Both A.melinus and A. lingnanensis are facultatively gregarious parasitoids. The degree of gregariousness depends on host size, i.e. the larger the host, the more the Iikelihood that several eggs will be deposited at each visit by the parasitoid.
5. When two eggs were laid during the same host visit, both A.melinus and A.lingnanensis laid one female and one male egg more often than would be expected under an assumption of random allocation of sexes.
6. Because A.melinus successfulIy utilize smaller hosts than A.lingnanensis to produce progeny, these parasitoids should not be considered ecological homo-logues, as suggested by DeBach & Sundby (1963).

Development and reproductive success of the solitary egg parasitoid Uscana lariophaga Steffan were examined after development in eggs of the bruchid storage pest Callosobruchus maculatus Fabricius reared at either low or high densities on cowpea seeds and laid at day 1 and 4 of maternal life. Both bruchid larval competition and maternal age negatively affected egg size, but the latter more than the former. Uscana lariophaga reared in small hosts developed slower, were smaller and produced fewer eggs compared to parasitoids reared in large hosts. Fecundity of the parasitoid was heavily influenced by host egg size. This was reflected in the values for the intrinsic rate of increase of U. lariophaga, which differed for wasps that developed in host eggs laid by bruchid females of different age. Wasps allocated marginally more female offspring to larger hosts.

This study aimed to determine the spawning strategy in the Atlantic bobtail squid Sepiola atlantica, in order to add new information to the knowledge of its reproductive strategy. A total of 12 females that spawned in aquaria were examined. Characteristics of the reproductive traits and egg clutches were similar to those of other known Sepiolidae. Clutch size varied from 31 up to 115 eggs. Females of this species had incorporated up to 1.58 times of their body weight into laid eggs. The size of laid eggs showed a positive correlation with maternal body size, supporting the idea that female size is a determinant of egg size. Our data suggest that S. atlantica is an intermittent terminal spawner, and that its spawning strategy comprises group-synchronous ovary maturation, multiple egg laying, and deposition of egg clutches in different locations. The obtained data provide insights for future comparative studies on reproductive allocation.

Females across a range of taxa have been shown to differentiallyallocate their reproductive resources according to the attractivenessof their mate. Previous studies demonstrated a female preferencefor larger males in the zebra fish but have so far failed touncover a size-mediated difference in male mating success, possiblydue to the effects of male–male competition. By controllingfor male–male competition in the present study, we showthat females strategically allocate their reproductive resources(i.e., eggs) toward larger males. When females were mated sequentiallywith a large and small male, they released a greater numberof eggs to the second male when he was large than when he wassmall. Furthermore, there was also a trend for females to releasea greater proportion of their eggs to the first male when hewas large. Across females, the total number of eggs laid byeach female increased with the average standard length of themale pair, whereas the number of eggs laid to the second malealso increased with his standard length. This study representsone of the first attempts at identifying differential allocationin a resource-free egg scatterer and suggests that female preferencesmay play a greater role in the reproductive success of malesin this species than previously envisaged.

The Oriental fruit moth, Cydia molesta (Busck, 1916) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), is a key pest of fruit and is widely distributed around the world. There are important connections between its behavior and biology and its management in agriculture, but few studies have investigated the associations between adult behaviors and oviposition. In this study, adult emergence, mating, and reproduction were investigated under laboratory and field conditions. The ratio of females to males at eclosion was approximately 1:1. When one virgin female had access to one virgin male, 66% and 34% of the couples copulated just once and twice, respectively; and the infertility rate of eggs (21.39 ± 1.25%) did not vary daily. Males, given access to one new female daily, could copulate multiple times, whereas females seldom mated more than once, indicating a male-biased operational sex ratio, but mating status of the male parent had no effect on progeny egg reproduction. Also, the number of eggs that hatched by all female partners of a male was inversely proportional to copulation duration for the female laying the eggs for total female reproductive success; and the number of eggs laid by all female partners of a male was proportional to their number of matings for total male reproductive success. However, the total number of eggs that hatched did not significantly differ for eggs laid by a female given new virgin males daily for mating (17.75 ± 4.28) versus eggs laid by virgin females (19.17 ± 7.51) presented daily with a male that re-mated daily with the series of females. Therefore, our results showed that females engaged in mate choice and males engaged in mate competition, affecting egg production, a factor that may be used to enhance mating disruption technology against Cydia molesta.

Reproductive manipulations of hosts by maternally inherited bacterial endosymbionts often result in an increase in the proportion of infected female hosts in the population. When this involves the conversion of incipient males to genetic or functional females, it presents unique difficulties for symbionts invading hosts with sex-specific reproductive behaviours, such as the autoparasitic Encarsia pergandiella. In sexual forms of this species, female eggs are laid in whitefly nymphs and male eggs are laid in conspecific or heterospecific parasitoids developing within the whitefly cuticle. Further, eggs laid in the 'wrong' host do not ordinarily complete development. This study explored the role of a bacterial symbiont, Cardinium, in manipulating oviposition behaviour in a thelytokous population of E. pergandiella. Oviposition choice was measured by the number and location of eggs deposited by both infected and uninfected adult waSPS in arenas containing equal numbers of hosts suitable for the development of male and female waSPS. Uninfected waSPS included antibiotic-treated female waSPS and (untreated) daughters of antibiotic-treated female waSPS. The choices of waSPS in the thelytokous population treatments were compared with those of a conspecific sexual population. We found that offspring of antibiotic-cured thelytokous waSPS reverted to the behaviour of unmated sexual waSPS, laying their few eggs almost exclusively in hosts appropriate for male eggs. Infected thelytokous waSPS distributed their eggs approximately evenly between host types, much like mated sexual female waSPS. The antibiotic-treated female waSPS exhibited choices intermediate to waSPS in the other two treatments. The change in the observed behaviour appears sufficient to allow invasion and persistence of Cardinium in sexual populations. Lastly, our results suggest a reduction in host discrimination as a possible mechanism by which Cardinium influences this change.

In a population of moorhens (Gallinula chloropus), at least27% of netting females laid one or more eggs in a neighbor'snest Females laid parasitically under three conditions: 56%of parasitic eggs were from nesting females that preceded layinga dutch in their own nest by a parasitic laying bout, 19% werefrom females whose nests were depredated before clutch completionand that laid the following egg parasiticaDy, and 25% were froma small number of females without territories, "non-nesting"parasites, that each laid a series of parasitic eggs. Clutchsizes varied greatly between females, but nesting females eachlaid a consistent clutch size both within and between seasonsfor a given mate and territory. Nesting females that employeda dual strategy of brood parasitism and parental care producedextra eggs that they laid in the nests of neighbors before layinga dutch in their own nests. Two out of ten females whose dutchesI experimentally removed during the laying period were successfullyinduced to lay their next egg in the nest of a neighbor. Nestingfemales that laid parasitically selected their hosts opportunisticallyfrom among the nests dosest to their territories. An experimentin which parasitic eggs were removed and hosts left to rearonly their own young showed that parasites did not choose hoststhat were better parents than pairs with contemporary neststhat were not parasitized. Females that only laid parasiticaDywithin a given season timed their parasitic laying bouts poorlyand achieved no reproductive success. Parasitic young rarelyfledged, and the mean seasonal reproductive success of nestingbrood parasites did not differ from that of nonparasitic females. However, the variance in reproductive success of nesting broodparasites was significantly higher than that of nonparasiticfemales.

The sexual behavior of Drosophila melanogaster gynandromorphs was studied to analyze the relationship between different steps in the female reproductive pathway. It was assumed that, in some gynandromorphs, certain female functions are missing because the corresponding control sites (foci) are either composed of male tissue or did not develop. A given gynandromorph can show elements of both male and female reproductive pathways. None of the steps of the female reproductive pathway appeared to be dependent on any other, in contrast to male behavior where, for example, following of females is a prerequisite for attempted copulation. By correlating each of the behaviors with the genotype of the cuticle, we confirmed previous findings that the focus for the female sex appeal is located in the abdomen, but receptivity to copulation is controlled by a site in the head. Many of the gynandromorphs did not lay eggs, presumably because either the focus controlling egg transfer from the ovaries to the uterus or the one controlling egg deposition was composed of male tissue. Many of the nonovipositing gynandromorphs laid eggs while dying or could be induced to deposit eggs after implantation of hormone-producing glands or topical application of a juvenile hormone analog. Some of the noninseminated gynandromorphs laid eggs at the rate characteristic for inseminated females, suggesting that an oviposition focus (mapping in the head region) suppresses oviposition in virgin females, but not in gynandromorphs whose focus is composed of male tissue. Some of the inseminated gynandromorphs oviposited eggs at a low rate, possibly because the focus responsible for detection of insemination could not function properly. Some of the inseminated gynandromorphs laid unfertilized eggs, revealing the importance of the focus controlling sperm release from the seminal receptacle. Foci controlling egg transfer, egg deposition and sperm release are located in the thorax, according to mosaic fate mapping results and studies on the reproductive behavior of decapitated females. The location of egg deposition in the culture vial seems to be controlled by a brain site. Sexual behavior in Drosophila does not depend on the presence (or absence) of the ovary or germ line.

Sexual conflicts often arise between mating partners because each sex tries to maximize its own reproductive success. One major male strategy to influence a partner's resource allocation is the transfer of accessory gland proteins. This has been shown to occur in simultaneous hermaphrodites as well as in organisms with separate sexes. Although accessory gland proteins affect the investment of resources in both male and female function, we here specifically focus on female investment. In the great pond snail, Lymnaea stagnalis, previous studies found that the accessory gland protein ovipostatin reduced female fecundity by suppressing egg laying in the partner in the short term (days). To investigate whether this reduction in egg laying is a commonly found effect of mating in freshwater snails, we compared egg output for evidence of suppression in isolated and paired snails of eight pulmonate species. Furthermore, we determined whether the suppression of egg laying caused a shift in resource allocation to the eggs. We found that in five of the eight species egg laying was suppressed, with fewer and lighter egg masses being laid when they had access to a mating partner. In mated pairs of L. stagnalis and Biomphalaria alexandrina, allocation of resources to the eggs was altered in opposite ways: individuals of L. stagnalis laid fewer but larger and heavier eggs; individuals of B. alexandrina laid smaller and lighter eggs, with no change in egg numbers. Such changes in the female function are most likely the result of combined effects of receiving accessory gland proteins, and the cost of mating in both male and female roles. Thus, effects of the maternal environment, including the receipt of accessory gland proteins, on offspring investment are not restricted to species with separate sexes.
