Mate recognition inCryptomyzus aphids: copulation and insemination   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The acceptability of three widely distributed Australian Menispermaceae,Tinospora smilacina Benth.,Sarcopetalum harveyanum F. Muell. andStephania japonica (Thunb.) Miers, as food for larvae of the fruitpiercing moth,Othreis fullonia (Clerck), was examined in three laboratory experiments. When larvae were presented with plant species individually total development times were shortest onT. smilacina and longest onS. japonica, despite relatively similar consumption rates within most instars.T. smilacina elicited greater (P<0.05) relative growth rates thanS. japonica in all instars except the 6th. In the second experiment, when larvae were allowed to select from each of the 3 plants, noS. japonica was chosen by 1 st instars and it represented only 3.7% of food consumed by 2nd instars. Significantly moreT. smilacina was eaten in each instar thanS. japonica, and more thanS. harveyanum except in the 2nd and 4th instars. The final experiment examined the abilities of larvae to switch hosts when forced after the 1st and 3rd instars. After the first or second food change largest average headcapsule widths were associated with feeding onT. smilacina as the most recent food. Feeding by final instars onT. smilacina also resulted in the shortest development time and highest puparial weights. While some larvae survived irrespective of plant sequence 83.3% of the recorded mortality occurred while larvae were exposed toS. japonica, principally during the 1st instar. These experiments lend support to field observations which suggest thatT. smilacina is a major host ofO. fullonia whileS. japonica is notS. harveyanum is probably an important alternate host whenT. smilacina is scarce.  相似文献

Geometrid moths were investigated at 26 sites on 9 elevational levels along an elevational transect at Mt. Kilimanjaro (Tanzania), stretching from the fine‐grained mosaic of small agroforest plots with combined cultivation of trees, shrubs and crops at 1650 m through mountain rainforest to heathland at 3300 m. We sampled moths manually at light between 19 : 00 and 22 : 00 in the rainy seasons of March to May and October to January in the years 2000, 2001 and 2002. Along the transect, the composition of moth communities changed from a domination by Sterrhinae and Ennominae to a dominance of Larentiinae with increasing elevation. Overall, alpha diversity was very low compared to other tropical mountain regions. Fisher's alpha showed a maximum of 30 in the agroforest mosaic at 1650 m and decreased to values around 12 in the mountain rainforest. Communities of geometrid moths within the forest belt were significantly dissimilar from communities outside the forest. The diversity patterns on Mt. Kilimanjaro can be related to the young age, island‐like position and history of the mountain. These factors have led to the formation of a homogeneous upper mountain rainforest habitat which in turn houses homogeneous moth communities with a low diversity compared to habitats at lower elevations. Here, a heterogeneous habitat mosaic allowing the intrusion of savannah species into this former forest habitat may account for an increased diversity. In the heath zone above the forest, climatic conditions are very harsh, permitting only few specialists to thrive in this ericaceous woodland. Edge effects were discernible at the forest–heathland boundary where some moth species from heathland invaded the closed forest. At the boundary between agroforest and a forest mosaic of exotic Acacia and Eucalyptus forest plantations and natural mountain forest, diversity values remained low as the dominant species Chiasmia fuscataria accounted for far higher proportions than other dominant species in any of the other habitats.  相似文献

Crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) is one of the photosynthetic pathways regarded as adaptations to water stress in land plants. Little is known about correlations among the level of CAM activity, environment of habitat, life form, and phylogenetic relationship of a plant group from an evolutionary perspective. We examined these relationships in 18 species of Cymbidium (Orchidaceae) because the genus shows distinctive diversification of habitats and life forms. The photosynthetic type was classed into three categories, strong CAM, weak CAM, and C3 on the basis of CAM activity. CAM expression in Cymbidium was confined to the epiphytic and lithophytic species. Especially, all of these species from tropical to subtropical rainforest exhibited CAM activity. On the other hand, the terrestrial species always exhibited C3 metabolism irrespective of their varied habitats. Regarding the evolution of photosynthetic characters, weak CAM was the ancestral state in Cymbidium and strong CAM and C3 metabolism occurred subsequently. The evolution of strong CAM likely enabled Cymbidium to extend to exposed sites in tropical lowland where marked water stress exists. Further, different levels of CAM activity characterized each species and such potential plasticity of CAM may realize the radiation of Cymbidium into sites with different environmental conditions.  相似文献

Freshwater fishes often show large amounts of body shape variation across divergent habitats and, in most cases, the observed differences have been attributed to the environmental pressures of living in lentic or lotic habitats. Previous studies have suggested a distinct set characters and morphological features for species occupying each habitat under the steady–unsteady swimming performance model. We tested this model and assessed body shape variation using geometric morphometrics for two widespread fishes, Goodea atripinnis (Goodeidae) and Chirostoma jordani (Atherinopsidae), inhabiting lentic and lotic habitats across the Mesa Central of Mexico. These species were previously shown to display little genetic variation across their respective ranges. Our body shape analyses reveal morphometric differentiation along the same axes for both species in each habitat. Both possess a deeper body shape in lentic habitats and a more streamlined body in lotic habitats, although the degree of divergence between habitats was less for C. jordani. Differences in the position of the mouth differed between habitats as well, with both species possessing a more superior mouth in lentic habitats. These recovered patterns are generally consistent with the steady–unsteady swimming model and highlight the significance of environmental forces in driving parallel body shape differences of organisms in divergent habitats. © 2014 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2014, 114 , 152–162.  相似文献

  • 1 Seasonal population growth rates for the pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum Harris, were determined in three different host plant habitats; alfalfa, Medicago sativa (L.), clover, Trifolium pratense (L.), and peas, Pisum sativum (L.); over four years and eight places. It was possible to estimate a common intrinsic rate of increase for each host plant habitat.
  • 2 An analysis of the relative influence of temporal, spatial and host plant habitat variation showed that the host plant habitat was most important in determining the growth rates of the populations, both in rate of build-up and decline.
  • 3 Patterns of alate production in the three different habitats differed substantially between the annual peas and the two perennial legumes. During the summer, alate production was large and rapid in peas and remained low and constant in clover and alfalfa
  • 4 Parasitism was highest in peas. The species composition of parasitoids differed between crops.
  • 5 Aphids in annual peas had a higher intrinsic rate of increase and a faster rate of decline than in the two perennial legumes. This explains the presence of both migratory and sedentary forms among pea aphids.

Abstract La Réunion Island has the largest area of intact vegetation of the islands in the Mascarene archipelago. Biological invasions are the primary threat to biodiversity in the intact habitats of the island (those not already transformed by agriculture and urbanization). Our study aimed to identify areas to prioritize in managing invasive alien plants for biodiversity conservation. We used extensive surveys of 238 distinct untransformed areas on La Réunion to define the current distribution patterns of all invasive species. Using expert knowledge, we compiled maps of the current distribution of the 46 most widespread/important invasive plants at the habitat scale (identified according to vegetation structure). Data from 440 botanical relevés for the 20 most threatening invasive alien plant species across the island and climatic envelope models were used to derive climatic suitability surfaces; these were used to map potential distributions for these species. More than 10 species invade 16.7% of the remaining habitat. Five habitat types are invaded by 25 or more species, and eight have fewer than 10 invasive alien plant species. Cluster analysis based on presence/absence of species in the 18 habitat types produced eight groups of species that invade particular habitats. Potential distribution models show that some species have invaded large parts of their potential range (e.g. Fuchsia magellanica, Furcraea foetida, Hiptage benghalensis), whereas others have the potential to increase their range substantially (e.g. Clidemia hirta, Strobilanthes hamiltonianus, Ulex europaeus). Management implications are identified for both groups. Three broad groups of habitats were identified: (i) intact habitats with a low level of invasion (e.g. subalpine shrubland); (ii) moderately invaded habitats with varying levels of intactness (ranging from windward submountain rainforest to the Acacia heterophylla forest); and (iii) habitats with little remaining intact area and high levels of invasion (e.g. lowland rainforest). 森林生态系统中小生境的差异可能影响种子萌发与幼苗的建立,并形成物种不同的分布格局。为探讨生境异质性对植物分布的影响,该研究在西双版纳热带季节性雨林中选取5个具有不同海拔和地形的小生境,人工散布木奶果与染木种子,定期监测种子萌发与幼苗存活,同步记录小生境的近地面(距地面3 cm)温度、近地面(3 cm)空气湿度和表层土壤(5 cm)含水量变化,并在实验室开展种子脱水和不同水势条件下的种子萌发实验。结果表明:(1)实验所选的5个小生境中,沟底地带的土壤水分含量在一年中始终都高于其他小生境;5个小生境的空气相对湿度在雨季与雾凉季都接近饱和,只有在干热季出现明显的差别,即随海拔的升高,空气湿度下降。同时,在旱季,近地面温度随海拔的升高而升高, 出现1~2个月的山地逆温现象。(2)木奶果与染木具有不同的种子传播与萌发规律,而且染木种子在不同生境下,其种子萌发率和幼苗存活率有显著的差异。其中:木奶果种子在雨季成熟散布并快速萌发,以幼苗的形式度过干热季,其种子可以在相对较低的水势下萌发;染木种子在雨季末期成熟并进入休眠期,以种子的形式度过干热季,其种子相对较抗脱水。研究认为,地形是决定西双版纳热带季节性雨林生境异质性的重要因子,小生境在温度和水分方面的差异在干热季时尤为明显,并对木奶果和染木种子的萌发或幼苗存活产生了重要影响, 而木奶果与染木种子自身的特性使其对于西双版纳季节性的干旱具有不同的适应对策。  相似文献

Abstract The Chilean predatory mite, Phytoseiulus persimilis Athias-Henriot, appeared in Australia in 1978 soon after being introduced into New Zealand as a specialized biological control agent of spider mites. It is known to be naturalized in agricultural habitats in southeast Queensland, Australia, although nothing is known about its distribution in native ecosystems. In order to determine whether P. persimilis is able to invade subtropical rainforest, we placed potted bean plants infested with its preferred prey, the two-spotted mite (Tetranychus urticae C.L. Koch), at 50 m intervals for 200 m on either side of the rainforest-field ecotone at four sites in southeast Queensland. Two, 4 and 6 weeks after placement, five leaves were sampled from each pot and any phytoseiid mites present were identified. The initial experiment took place in the spring and was repeated in summer and in autumn of 1997. At all four sites and in all three seasons P. persimilis rapidly colonized all of the pots in fields. In the rainforest, however, some pots were never colonized and significant populations of the predator developed only in the summer, and then only at the first stations, 50 m into the forest. These results suggest that even when its preferred prey is present, subtropical rainforest is not an appropriate habitat for P. persimilis. In addition, we reviewed extensive collections of phytoseiid mites from native forests and synanthropic habitats in Australia and found P. persimilis records only from fields, glasshouses, gardens, weeds, roadsides and similar disturbed habitats dominated by introduced plants, again suggesting that this biocontrol agent is not a rainforest invader.  相似文献

This article attempts to explain that parasitoids provide the evolutionary pressure responsible for relationships between habitat use and larval food plant use in herbivorous insects. Three species of butterflies of the genus Pieris, P. rapae, P. melete, and P. napi use different sets of cruciferous plants. They prefer different habitats composed of similar sets of cruciferous plants. In our study, P. rapae used temporary habitats with ephemeral plants, P. melete used permanent habitat with persistent plants, although they also used temporary habitats, and P. napi used only permanent habitat. The choice experiment in the field cages indicated that each of the three butterfly species avoided oviposition on plants usually unused in its own habitat, but accepted the unused plants which grew outside its own habitat. Their habitat use and plant use were not explained by intrinsic plant quality examined in terms of larval performance. Pieris larvae collected from persistent plants or more long lasting habitats were more heavily parasitized by two specialist parasitoids, the braconid wasp Cotesia glomerata and the tachinid fly Epicampocera succincta. The results suggest that Pieris habitat and larval food plant use patterns can be explained by two principles. The evolution of habitat preference may have been driven by various factors including escape from parasitism. Once habitat preference has evolved, selection favors the evolution of larval food plant preferences by discriminating against unsuitable plants, including those which are associated with high parasitism pressures. Abstract Population density estimates and patterns of habitat selection by sympatric red‐bellied pademelons (Thylogale billardierii (Marsupialia: Macropodidae)) and red‐necked wallabies (Macropus rufogriseus rufogriseus (Marsupialia: Macropodidae)) were examined within a patchy forestry environment in north‐west Tasmania. Population density of both species was relatively high. Selection indices from both population surveys and animal movement data showed that T. billardierii and M. rufogriseus had similar patterns of habitat selection at two spatio‐temporal scales; home range within the study area and habitats selected while foraging at night. Both species selected for young Eucalyptus nitens plantation with high weed‐cover within their home range. At night, T. billardierii and M. rufogriseus selected for open habitats (young plantation and grassland) and avoided closed habitats (native forest and 5–7 years old E. nitens plantation). There was no evidence for resource partitioning between species at these scales. In contrast, the two species differed in their selection for daytime sheltering habitat; T. billardierii selected native forest while M. rufogriseus selected older plantation. This may reflect differences in their predator avoidance strategies; that is, crypsis versus flight, rather than resource partitioning as a result of interspecific competition. The environment appears to be of high quality for both species, with patches of feeding and shelter habitats within close proximity of one another.  相似文献

植物多样性与植物竞争强度和生态位重叠度的关系会随环境发生变化。为探究上述关系在若尔盖地区的表现形式,于2021年8月对若尔盖地区典型的水生、湿生、湿生-中生和中生植物群落进行调查,构建了新的植物竞争强度(Competition intensity,CI)公式并进行测算,计算了植物群落的植物多样性指数(包括物种丰富度、Shannon-Weiner指数、Simpson指数和Pielou均匀度指数)和生态位重叠度(Niche overlap of species,NOS),分析了植物群落物种多样性指数与CI和NOS的关系。结果表明:1)从水生到中生生境,植物多样性指数均呈增加趋势(P<0.05);2)湿生-中生生境的CI显著高于湿生生境(P<0.05),湿生生境的NOS高于水生生境(P<0.05);CI与NOS无显著相关性,但在湿生生境中两者呈倒抛物线关系(P<0.05)。3)整体来看,植物群落的物种丰富度与CI呈抛物线关系(P<0.05),与NOS无显著关系(P>0.05);Shannon-Weiner指数、Simpson指数和Pielou均匀度指数均与NOS呈线性正相关(P<0.05),与CI无显著关系(P>0.05);从单个生境看,湿生-中生生境的Simpson指数、Shannon-Weiner指数和Pielou均匀度指数与CI呈线性负相关(P<0.05),其余生境的上述多样性指数与CI无显著关系(P>0.05);各生境的植物多样性指数均与NOS无显著相关性(P>0.05)。本研究表明,从水生到中生生境,若尔盖地区的植物多样性呈增加趋势,但植物多样性与物种竞争强度和生态位重叠度的关系较复杂。本研究结果有助于理解若尔盖高原植物多样性的形成机制。  相似文献

This paper examines the role of fire in mediating the relative abundance of two of the world's major ecologically dominant ant genera, Iridomyrmex and Oecophylla, where they coexist across the tropical savanna landscapes of northern Australia. These taxa have contrasting biogeographical histories, which are predicted to lead to contrasting responses to fire. Iridomyrmex is an autochthonous Australian genus that has radiated primarily in the arid zone; as such, its abundance is predicted to be promoted by frequent fire because this maintains an open habitat. In contrast, Oecophylla is a genus of leaf‐nesting ants occurring in the canopies of Old World tropical rainforest, and is a recent arrival to Australia in geological time; the abundance of these ants is predicted to decline under frequent fire. We test these predictions using results from a landscape‐scale fire experiment, where three experimental fire regimes (including no fire) were applied to replicated subcatchments over a 5‐year period. Using sweep nets, ants were sampled in the grass layer (the habitat layer of greatest overlap between Iridomyrmex and Oecophylla) in eucalypt woodland (canopy cover < 30%) and open eucalypt forest (canopy cover about 50%) habitats. A total of 27 species from 11 genera were collected during the study; eight were common enough for statistical analysis, and the abundances of four of these were significantly affected by fire treatment. As predicted, the abundance of Iridomyrmex was promoted by fire, whereas that of Oecophylla declined. These changes occurred only under late‐season (relatively high intensity) fires, and for Oecophylla occurred only in open forest (not woodland) habitat. This fire‐mediated relationship between Iridomyrmex and Oecophylla mirrors the much broader, ecosystem‐wide dynamic between eucalypt‐dominated savanna and rainforest in tropical Australia, with savannas dominated by fire‐resistant sclerophyll elements of Australian origin, and rainforest dominated by fire‐sensitive mesophyll elements of South‐East Asian origin.  相似文献

We review 28 years of long‐term surveillance (1970–1997) for plague activity among wild rodents from ten locations within three coniferous forest habitat types in the northern Sierra Nevada and the Southern Cascade mountains of northeastern California. We identify rodent hosts and their fleas and document long‐term plague activity in each habitat type. The highest seroprevalence for Yersinia pestis occurred in the chipmunks, Tamias senex and T. quadrimaculatus, and the pine squirrel, Tamiasciurus douglasii. The most commonly infected fleas were Ceratophyllus ciliatus and Eumolpianus eumolpi from chipmunks and Oropsylla montana and O. idahoensis from ground squirrels. Serological surveillance demonstrated that populations of T. senex, T. quadrimaculatus and T. douglasii are moderately resistant to plague, survive infection, and are, therefore, good sentinels for plague activity. Recaptured T. senex and T. quadrimaculatus showed persistence of plague antibodies and evidence of re‐infection over a two year period. These rodent species, their fleas, and the ecological factors common to the coniferous forest habitats likely promote the maintenance of plague foci in northeastern California.  相似文献

植物对资源的投资和分配是生态学中的重要问题,它反映了植物应对环境变化时的生活史策略。选择青藏高原东缘同一海拔下的嵩草草甸(Kobresia sp.meadow)、金露梅灌丛(Potentilla fruticosa shrub meadow)以及草甸-灌丛交错带3种生境类型,并以3种生境下的湿生扁蕾(Gentianopsis paludosa)为对象,研究了其繁殖分配特征。结果发现:(1)在种群水平上,在生境从草甸经交错带到灌丛的变化中,湿生扁蕾个体大小和繁殖分配比例逐渐增加;3个种群湿生扁蕾的总花数目没有显著差异,但草甸生境湿生扁蕾的蕾期花数目显著高于灌丛生境,而果期花数目则显著低于灌丛生境;(2)在个体水平上,湿生扁蕾的繁殖绝对投入与个体大小显著正相关,且各种群植株都存在繁殖所需的个体大小阈值,而繁殖阈值在生境从草甸经交错带到灌丛的过渡中逐渐减小;湿生扁蕾的繁殖相对投入与个体大小负相关,但相关系数随着生境从草甸经交错带到灌丛的过渡中逐渐减小;各种群花数目与湿生扁蕾植株个体大小显著正相关。研究表明,湿生扁蕾的繁殖投资存在大小依赖效应,但生境差异会对其繁殖投资和生活史策略造成显著影响,而这种影响主要是由不同生境下自然条件的不同造成的。同时,资源分配也与湿生扁蕾的遗传特性和延迟自交的繁育系统特征有关。湿生扁蕾这种不同生境下个体大小依赖的繁殖投资差异是湿生扁蕾与其生境长期适应和进化(生境选择)的结果。  相似文献

Summary Habitat selection of three chrysomelid beetles feeding on the Rumex plants was studied in relation to the ecological requirements of the three species and the habitat characteristics arising in their unstable and often unpredictable environment. The different ecological requirements and bionomic characteristics of the three chrysomelids were associated not only with their differing degrees of feeding specialization; they also influenced habitat selection. For example, the small body size and lower food demands of Mantura clavareaui, which is a feeding specialist, allowed it to exploit any habitat, irrespective of habitat size and duration. The other specialist, Gastrophysa atrocyanea, selected larger habitats because of the relatively brief lifespan of its adults after overwintering, its reduced mortality, and greater food demand. On the other hand, Galerucella vittaticollis, which is a multivoltine, general feeder, selected the habitat that lasted longer, rather than one that was larger. This species' life cycle is not synchronized with Rumex phenology, but its adults are long-lived and it has a flexible life cycle. The different patterns in habitat selection among these three chrysomelids prevented serious overlapping of their habitats; thus, the habitat overlapping of 2 or 3 species was 34.62%, that of all 3 species 3.85%. Most of the habitats utilized by Gastrophysa, however, overlapped those of the other two species, because Gastrophysa's habitat utilization range was the narrowest of the three. In Mantura, the degree of overlap with the other two species was lowest because this beetle had the broadest range of habitat utilization. On the other hand, Galerucella adjusted the temporal, rather than the spatial coordinates of its habitat usage when it occupied habitats where the other two specialists were also present. Galerucella, unlike the other two species, is multivoltine. Consequently, it was able to coexist in habitats occupied by the others by exploiting the host plants at times when the other species were numerically few, or even absent. No direct interspecific competition among adults of the three species was observed. Their different patterns of habitat selection created by their different responses to available food allowed them to coexist on Rumex without direct competition.  相似文献

Anderson's graphic method of population analysis applied to a number of specimens of Trichomanes sect. Selenodesmium points to introgressive hybridization between T. polystromaticum and T. dentatum. The two species, one of which grows in a xeric habitat and the other in a very protected mesic one, tend to maintain their specific integrities in their extreme habitats. Intermediate forms which tend to grow in intermediate habitats give indication of genetic imbalance in the form of diad spore production. Peculiarities of the fern and in particular of the hymenophyllaceous life cycle are discussed in the context of hybridization.  相似文献

国家二级保护野生植物水菜花(Ottelia cordata),喜生于清洁的水环境中,对环境变化极为敏感,是检验湿地环境及气候变化的关键指示物种之一,在我国仅零星分布于海南北部的火山熔岩湿地区,生存状况不容乐观。研究水菜花种群潜在生境选择及其空间格局演变,有利于加强濒危物种保护保育及湿地生态系统修复、管理。该研究基于GIS平台和MaxEnt模型,结合气候、地形和土壤因子,探究水菜花种群环境限制因子及其在气候变化背景下潜在适宜生境的演变格局。结果表明,水菜花种群对温差与降水量变化敏感,等温性、最冷季度降水量、土壤类型和年均降水量对水菜花种群分布影响显著;全新世中期-当前-2070年气候变化背景下,水菜花适宜生境面积先减小后增大,分布重心呈西南-东北-西南转移格局;未来气候情景下,水菜花种群高度和中度适宜生境缩减,低适宜生境增加,南部地区将出现新增适宜生境,东北、西北及西南部适宜生境将发生消减。该研究从气候环境角度论证了水菜花种群的潜在生境选择及空间变化特征,可为濒危物种保护保育、湿地管理及其生物多样性维护工作提供参考和指导。  相似文献

We studied the life cycle and growth of Spongilla lacustris in a stream with three distinct habitats. Sponge populations in the habitats exhibited different adaptive strategies. Growth forms of S. lacustris ranged from encrusting to digitate and branched. Environmental factors controlled the appearance of each growth form. In the most hospitable habitat, a variety of colonization strategies and different growth forms were present. In the less hospitable habitat growth was restricted to small and encrusting specimens. In the optimal habitat, the largest and most luxuriant specimens developed. Gemmulation and hatching were dephased among specimens in the three habitats; hence gemmules were present for long periods of time. S. lacustris was found capable of displaying two life strategies: r in the short run, K in the long run.  相似文献
