Abstract. The literature relating to the attraction of the sheep blowflies Lucilia sericata and Lucilia cuprina to their ovine hosts is reviewed. The responses of the two species are similar and different components of the behaviour leading to host location and oviposition appear to involve at least two distinct sets of semiochemical cues. Activation, upwind orientation and landing appear to occur in response to putrefactive sulphur-rich volatiles, originating from bacterial decomposition products. Oviposition is elicited primarily by the presence of ammonia-rich compounds; moisture, pheromones and tactile stimuli may also act as oviposition stimuli. There is a pronounced sex difference in the response of Lucilia to semiochemicals with a higher proportion of females attracted than males and a higher proportion of gravid than non-gravid females. While the mechanisms of host location by Lucilia are of intrinsic interest, understanding the responses to semiochemicals is important in the attempt to develop powerful synthetic baits for deployment with the traps or targets used for population sampling or suppression. The literature is discussed with respect to the development of synthetic semiochemical baits.  相似文献

Abstract. A treated-surface test was used in a bioassay to detect insecticide resistance to the organophosphorus compounds diazinon and propetamphos, in larvae of field strains of Lucilia cuprina in New Zealand during 1990/91 and 1991/92 (December-April). Mean LC50s for both diazinon and propetamphos showed a significant increase between seasons although this is not necessarily indicative of a trend. Mean LC50s for diazinon increased from 1.16 to 1.60 mg/1 (P< 0.001) and for propetamphos from 0.49 to 0.59 mg/1 (P< 0.005) in pooled populations. Diazinon and propetamphos resistance was significantly correlated in both seasons, suggesting side-resistance between the two insecticides.  相似文献

Abstract. Between 1920 and 1930, four species of parasitoid Hymenoptera (Tachinaephagus zealandicus, Alysia manducator, Nasonia vitripennis and Brachymeria ucalegon) were imported to New Zealand as an aid in the control of the blowflies causing myiasis in sheep (flystrike). Their long-term effects have never been investigated and the extent to which they were successful in establishing and enlarging their ranges has been given scant regard over the last 60 years. A long-term epidemiological study of flystrike in New Zealand between 1986 and 1996 obtained 4061 samples of blowfly larvae from flystruck sheep and carrion and overall 1.1% of these larval samples (most from the North Island) were found to be parasitized. Tachinaephagus zealandicus and A. manducator were present in field strikes, together with the endemic Aphaereta aotea recently found to be a parasite of calliphorids. The endemic species Phaenocarpa antipoda was found in association with carrion but not flystrike. Neither N.vitripennis nor B.ucalegon were isolated from larvae in field strikes, the former because it parasitizes only pupae and the latter may be extinct as it has not been sighted since its introduction in 1919.
It is concluded that if parasitoid wasps are able to locate and parasitize blowfly larvae on struck sheep, then their parasitism rate on more accessible larvae on carcases may be correspondingly greater. For this reason their scope for use in integrated management of flystrike could be increased by culturing and field release.  相似文献

Abstract. The pattern of feeding is described for males of the Australian sheep blowfly, Lucilia cuprina , with ad libitum access to either 0.1 M or 1.0 M glucose solution. Flies given the 0.1 M solution ingested nearly 3 times the volume taken by flies given the 1.0 M solution by eating meals of, on average, twice the size about 1.5 times as frequently. Flies were usually relatively inactive following a meal, with the extent of this post-prandial quiescence being a function both of meal size and concentration of sugar. Quiescence lasted only about 20% of the average intermeal interval, however, and there was no correlation between meal size and time to the next meal. The crop emptied more slowly when it contained 1.0 M rather than 0.1 M glucose solution and the crop was, on average, fuller at the beginning of a meal on the higher concentration. The volume of solution imbibed during a meal was positively correlated with time since the end of the preceding meal. The average crop volume at the end of a meal was similar in flies feeding on 0.1 M and 1.0 M solutions. The results are considered in relation to published information on control of feeding and compensation in the blowfly Phormia regina.  相似文献

Field and laboratory populations of the Australian sheep blowfly, Lucilia cuprina (Wiedemann) (Calliphoridae), were surveyed by bioassay for possible resistance to the synthetic pyrethroids, a group of insecticides under development for blowfly control. A normal distribution of LC50 values was found using deltamethrin, the test pyrethroid, with no indication of specific resistance despite widespread use of deltamethrin on sheep to control the sheep body louse, Damalinia ovis (Schrank) (Trichodectidae). There was no cross-resistance to deltamethrin from existing organophosphate (OP) resistance nor from previous use of DDT. Selection with deltamethrin on a combined field strain, CSF85, increased the LC50 gradually over the first twenty generations until it stabilized at approximately 25x that of the unselected CSF85. This laboratory-induced resistance extended to other pyrethroids, cypermethrin (16x), cyhalothrin (25x) and cycloprothrin (10x), and increased the existing resistance of CFS85 to the OP diazinon (11x) and the carbamate, butacarb (83x).  相似文献

Rates of ovarian development in L. cuprina are determined by ambient temperatures and females require a minimum of 57 day degrees above 8°C to mature their first complement of eggs. The number of oocytes that a female can mature depends on her size and the amount of protein-rich material ingested. Under field conditions, females usually obtain sufficient protein to reach maturity but rarely mature their full egg complements (Vogt et al., 1985), i.e., most females resorb some of their oocytes. Oocyte resorption prolongs the maturation period by approximately 0.3 day degrees/oocyte resorbed.A model of ovarian development rates is presented which incorporates resorption delays and uses ambient temperature regimes to estimate the physiological ages and maturation rates of field females.
Résumé Les taux de développement ovarien de L. cuprina sont déterminés par la température ambiante, et la femelle exige un minimum de 57 degrés-jours audessus de 8°C pour développer son premier lot d'oeufs. Le nombre d'ovocytes qu'une femelle peut former dépend de sa taille et de la quantité d'aliments riches en protéines absorbées. Dans les conditions de la nature, les femelles obtiennent normalement suffisamment de protéines pour atteindre la maturité mais rarement l'ensemble de leur contingent d'oeufs se développe totalement, c'est à dire que la majorité des femelles résorbé une partie de ses ovocytes. La résorption des ovocytes prolonge la période de maturation d'environ 0,3 dégre-jour par ovocyte résorbé. Un modèle de taux de développement ovarien est proposé qui incorpore les retards dus à la résorption et utilise les régimes de température ambiante pour évaluer les âges physiologiques et les taux de maturation des femelles dans la nature.

Chrysomya albiceps, the larvae of which are facultative predators of larvae of other dipteran species, has been introduced to the Americas over recent years along with other Old World species of blowflies, including Chrysomya megacephala, Chrysomya putoria and Chrysomya rufifacies. An apparent correlate of this biological invasion has been a sudden decline in the population numbers of Cochliomyia macellaria, a native species of the Americas. In this study, we investigated predation rates on third instar larvae of C. macellaria, C. putoria and C. megacephala by third instar larvae of C. albiceps in no-choice, two-choice and three-choice situations. Most attacks by C. albiceps larvae occurred within the first hour of observation and the highest predation rate occurred on C. macellaria larvae, suggesting that C. albiceps was more dangerous to C. macellaria than to C. megacephala and C. putoria under these experimental conditions. The rates of larvae killed as a result of the predation, as well as its implications to population dynamics of introduced and native species are discussed.  相似文献

Blowflies (Diptera: Calliphoridae) and flesh flies (Sarcophagidae) were collected using a bait trap in Osaka City between April 1998 and June 1999. Seven species from four Calliphoridae genera and three species from one Sarcophagidae genus were captured. Seasonal fluctuations of captured adults for most blowflies showed a bimodal pattern, having peaks in spring and autumn, whereas all flesh flies were captured between spring and autumn. The sex ratios of captured flies were mostly biased toward females.  相似文献

Abstract. The quantity of specific antibody ingested by larvae of Lucilia cuprina and its fate after ingestion were studied in larvae grown on sheep and on an artificial diet. Larvae grown to late first or early second instar on sheep vaccinated with horse myoglobin contained 66% less specific antibody detected by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay than larvae grown to a similar stage on an artificial diet containing 75% serum from the same sheep. A similar result was obtained when larvae were grown to mid-third instar. Larvae grown on sheep to first or second instar contained approximately the same quantity of specific antibody per unit weight of larvae as those grown to third instar. Larvae grown on diet to third instar contained 22% less specific antibody per unit weight than those grown to first or second instar. In larvae grown on diet to late third instar, ingested diet retained 91 ± 12% of its original specific antibody activity in the crop, 50 ± 11% in the anterior midgut, 8 ± 2% in the posterior midgut and 13 ± 6% in the hindgut. The mean concentration of total immunoglobulin detectable in the haemolymph of individual third instar larvae grown on diet was 1.7 ± 2.8 ug/ml. Assays of specific antibody in the haemolymph of similarly reared larvae indicated that all or most of this immunoglobulin remained functional. The implications of the quantities and distribution of ingested functional antibody found in feeding larvae of L.cuprina are discussed in relation to the possibility of vaccinating sheep against these larvae and the selection of likely internal targets as sources of potential protective antigens.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Under laboratory light: dark cycles, the flight activity of adult Lucilia cuprina (Wied.) was low during darkness and uniformity high during light. This pattern persisted as a rhythm both in constant darkness and in constant light of intensity up to 1lx, with a period of approximately 22 h in each. Light pulses of 15 min at l00lx applied to the free-running rhythm in constant darkness generated phase shifts of up to 60°, 12-h light pulses of the same intensity generated maximal (180°) phase shifts. The phase response curves had shapes similar to those of a number of other insect rhythms. When exposed to light periods (70 lx) of greater than 12 h followed by constant darkness, the rhythm reinitiated at the light-dark transition from a constant phase equivalent to that at the time of the light-dark transition in the LD 12:12 cycle.  相似文献

A model is presented for analysis of mark-recapture data of mobile insects which, unlike the Lincoln Index, does not require marked individuals to remain within the sampling area or to mix uniformly with the wild population. The model assumes a single or multiple releases of marked insects from the centre of the sampling area and that captured individuals are not returned to the population. Dispersal rates of marked insects are estimable from serial recaptures and, for catches that are either unaffected by or have been corrected for weather effects, the model also provides estimates of mortality and age-dependent trappability. Application of the model is illustrated using mark-recapture data for adults of the Australian sheep blowfly Lucilia cuprina.  相似文献

Abstract  Several genes on chromosomes IV and VI have a significant influence on high-level resistance to diflubenzuron in a strain of the Australian sheep blowfly from Tara, Queensland. Low-level resistance to cyromazine in the same strain is due to genes on these chromosomes with a gene (gene complex) in the sv marker region of chromosome IV being particularly important. For both insecticides, genetic background influences resistance status. If the results of the Tara strain prove typical for those of other populations, resistance to diflubenzuron in the Australian sheep blowfly has potentially significant consequences for woolgrowers.  相似文献

In the Australian sheep blowfly, Lucilia cuprina, the number of ovarioles, and hence the maximum number of eggs developed in each ovarian cycle, is a linear function of adult size (headwidth). Field females have a mean headwidth of 3.0 mm (range=2.30–3.50 mm) and a mean potential fecundity/cycle of 232 eggs (range=111–318 eggs). Realised fecundity is influenced by the quality and amount of protein in the adult diet. All field females appear to have the same minimum protein requirement for egg maturation, i.e., whatever their size (potential fecundity) females must obtain sufficient protein to mature at least 110 eggs in order to become gravid. Females whose protein intake exceeds this minimum but falls short of the amount needed for maturation of their full egg complements resorb some of their oocytes and mature the remainder. Since potential fecundity increases with fly size, large females resorb more oocytes than small females under suboptimal protein regimes, i.e., the proportion of oocytes resorbed increases with fly size. Under field conditions, females rarely matured full complements of eggs, which indicates a general shortage of protein-rich material. The mean reduction in fecundity of field females during these studies was 53.4 eggs/cycle (23.2%).
Résumé Chez Lucilia cuprina Wied., le nombre d'ovarioles, et ainsi le nombre maximum d'oeufs développés au cours de chaque cycle ovarien, est une fonction linéaire de la taille de l'adulte (largeur de la tête). La largeur moyenne de la tête des femelles de la nature est 3 mm (2,3 à 3,5) et la fécondité potentielle moyenne par cycle de 232 oeufs (111 à 318).La fécondité réelle est influencée par la qualité et la quantité de protéines dans le régime alimentaire. Toutes les femelles de la nature semblent avoir les mêmes exigences minimales en protéines pour la maturation des ovocytes, c'est à dire que quelle que soit leur taille (fécondité potentielle) les femelles doivent obtenir les protéines suffisantes à la formation d'au moins 110 ovocytes pour devenir gravides. Les femelles dont l'absorption de protéines dépasse ce minimum, mais est insuffisant pour permettre la maturation de la totalité de leurs ovocytes, en résorbent quelques uns et conduisent à maturité le reste. Puisque la fécondité potentielle augmente avec la taille des mouches, les grosses femelles résorbent plus d'ovocytes que les petites avec un régime suboptimal en protéines, c'est à dire que la proportion d'ovocytes résorbés augmente avec la taille des mouches. Dans les conditions de la nature, la totalité des ovocytes parvient rarement à maturité, ce qui indique une limitation générale en aliments riches en protéines. La réduction moyenne de la fécondité chez les femelles de la nature a été au cours de cette étude de 53.4 oeufs par cycle (23,2%).

Chitin synthesis in third-instar Lucilia cuprina larvae cultured at 23 °C was investigated using in vivo and in vitro systems, the latter with whole and with homogenized integuments. Synthesis was at a maximum between 24 and 48h after ecdysis from the second instar. Chitin was deposited in layers, and labeled GlcNAc was rapidly cleared from the hemolymph. In in vitro homogenate systems, the rapid conversion of UDP-([14C]GlcN)Ac to ([14C]GlcN)Ac and its 1-phosphate derivative contributed to the low incorporation of this precursor into chitin. The extent of the conversion was reduced by the addition of KCN or phenylthiourea. In in vivo and in vitro tissue systems the level of incorporation of ([14C]ClcN)Ac was higher than that of UDP-([14C]GlcN)Ac. However, in in vitro homogenate systems there was no difference unless UTP was added when the level of incorporation of only ([14C]GlcN)Ac was increased (by a factor of 9). Incorporation of UDP-([14C]GlcN)Ac, but not that of ([14C]GlcN)Ac, was decreased when larvae were deprived of food. Soluble oligosaccharides were detected in in vitro homogenate systems. They were formed during chitin synthesis and may represent newly initiated chitin chains. A reappraisal of current ideas on chitin synthesis in insects is needed.  相似文献

Abstract. In order to develop and evaluate control strategies for blowfly strike, a greater understanding of the epidemiology is essential. A postal survey of sheep farmers yielded information about ten farm and management factors and their relationship to blowfly strike prevalence. The risk of a farm reporting at least one case of blowfly strike increased as flock size and stocking density increased (adjusted odds ratio of 1.13 for an increase in flock size of 100 sheep and 1.38 for an increase in stocking density of ten sheep per hectare). As farm altitude increased, the risk of blowfly strike decreased (adjusted odds ratio 0.67 for an increase in farm altitude of 100 m). The risk of high strike prevalence (more than 2% of sheep struck) decreased as both farm altitude and flock size increased. High strike prevalence was also associated with on-farm sheep carcase disposal (odds ratio 1.35). Farmers in the south-west of England were more likely to report at least one case of blowfly strike and high strike prevalence compared to all other regions.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Female Lucilia sericata Mg. fed a reproductive diet of meat were sterilized by injection of 10μg of tepa. Light microscopy revealed that the medial neurosecretory cells of the brain of sterilized flies were highly active compared with the same cells in untreated flies of similar age and nutritional status. The corpora allata of sterilized flies were also greatly enlarged. The evidence suggests that developing oocytes secrete a substance that inhibits the corpora allata hormone, thereby suppressing brain neurosecretory cell activity and preventing oogenesis in the subsequent oocytes.  相似文献

Major volcanic eruptions in the central North Island of New Zealand and, in particular, an eruption dated at ad 186, spread ignimbrite and volcanic ashes (tephra) over a broad area, deposition of which caused major defaunation of affected habitats. However, riverine freshwater fish faunas were undoubtedly affected far beyond the zones of ignimbrite deposition and ash settlement as a result of ash-laden floods moving down rivers. In areas where entire river systems were covered with ash, fish faunas that recolonized rivers now consist almost entirely of diadromous species that have been able to recolonize the river systems by dispersing through the sea. However, some rivers, that were probably severely affected in their headwaters, have lower elevation and more distant tributaries whose catchments escaped ash showers; these provided refuges for non-diadromous species which could recolonize upstream once rivers became inhabitable. In such rivers the fish faunas are now a mix of diadromous and non-diadromous species.  相似文献

Hughes P. B. (1981) Spectrum of cross-resistance to insecticides in field samples of the primary sheep blowfly, Lucilia cuprina. Internationaljournal for Parasitology11:475–479. Resistance to the organophosphorous (OP) insecticide, diazinon, is due to a major gene on chromosome 4. To examine the spectrum of cross-resistance in field populations of Lucilia cuprina, larvae from 41 field samples were exposed to the susceptible discriminating doses of five insecticides. A comparison of the mortalities produced by diazinon to those caused by the other OPs tested (fenthion-ethyl, chlorfenvinphos and coumaphos) indicates that the diazinon resistance gene may confer cross-resistance to other OPs used for blowfly control. However, two samples were found to be resistant to diazinon but susceptible to coumaphos. The OP resistance gene is present at a high frequency in field populations, with a mean frequency of 0–82. Mortalities produced by the carbamate, butacarb, did not relate to those due to diazinon. It seems that a separate mechanism for carbamate resistance is also present in the field. No indication of resistance was found to the insect growth regulator Vetrazin® in any sample tested.  相似文献

Abstract. A quantitative study of relationships between forest pattern and environment in the central North Island, New Zealand, is based on forest composition data from ca. 2000 existing plots distributed throughout the forests of the region. Estimates of mean annual temperature, rainfall, and solar radiation are derived for each plot from mathematical surfaces fitted to climate station data. Estimates of the depth of the last major rhyolitic eruption, (Taupo Pumice, ca. 130 AD) are derived from isopach maps. A classification procedure is used to identify broad compositional groups. Generalised linear models are used to examine relationships between major species and climatic and other physical factors. Significant relationships are identified between the distributions of both plot groups and species, and climate, vulcanism, topography and drainage. Among these factors, temperature and/or solar radiation are indicated as major determinants of the regional forest pattern, with rainfall, topography, and drainage acting at a secondary level. The role of the Taupo Pumice eruption is more difficult to interpret, and its effects seem to have been greatly influenced by topography. Deep extensive deposits of tephra on flat-to-rolling sites close to the eruption centre have probably favoured the current dominance of these sites by more rapidly dispersing conifers. In contrast, on adjacent steep sites where forest destruction was likely to be less severe, slow-dispersing Nothofagus species are largely dominant. Further work is needed to understand the factors favouring conifer dominance of the central basins and the degree to which Nothofagus species might expand their range in the future.  相似文献
