Some individual honeyeaters were repeatedly seen near the same location over at least a 2 day period and were considered resident in the present study. Such resident honeyeaters (mostly New Holland and White-cheeked Honeyeaters) were present on the heathland study areas from about February until about October. Production of nectar energy is negligible prior to April and low after October. It is hypothesized that the density of residents is determined by their ability to obtain energy in nearby habitats while establishing nesting sites in the heathland in February and March. Nesting tended to occur between April and July when there was sufficient production of nectar-energy.  相似文献

Differences in habitat selection, diet and behaviour of resident and wintering Red Kites Milvus milvus were studied in Donana National Park, southwest Spain. Adult resident Red Kites roosted at their nests, while immature residents and wintering birds gathered at communal roosts. Individuals remained on average for two consecutive nights (range 1–8) at the same communal roost. Wintering kites spent significantly more time foraging gregariously than residents. The use of the marsh was greater by wintering kites while residents more often used the forest. Wintering birds consumed more goose carrion than the residents. Wintering kites had larger core areas, moved farther from their roost sites to feed and changed foraging areas more frequently than residents. Among residents, adult females had the smallest home ranges (core area, distances travelled and time spent flying). We suggest that Red Kites wintering in Donana occupy the marsh because it provides high food availability, and is vacated by Black Kites M. migrans which exploit this profitable habitat during the breeding season.  相似文献

The numbers of honeyeaters present at particular sites in the Jarrah forest varied significantly from month to month, with peak abundance occurring between May and September. Numbers also varied from site to site, depending upon the major plant species present. Honeyeater abundance was not limited by arthropod availability, but in many instances was closely correlated with the availability of nectar, particularly that produced by Dryandra sessilis. Large honeyeaters, such as Anthochaera chrysoptera and Phylidonyris novaehollandiae, were generally most abundant at times and sites of greatest nectar production. Small honeyeaters, such as Acanthorhynchus superciliosis, were never abundant but were present for most of the year. The production of nectar between October and December was such that more honeyeaters could have been supported than were actually present. Low numbers at these times can be explained in terms of reduced foraging efficiency that would have resulted from more widely dispersed flowers, and the possible availability of more rewarding nectar resources at other sites.  相似文献

Abstract The maximum density of resident honeyeaters in heathland near Sydney was very similar from one area and year to another, despite large variation in production of nectar-energy. The most likely explanation for this is that density is determined by the spacing behaviour of birds rather than by nectar production or other factors. Within years, nesting by these residents was positively correlated with temporal variation in production of nectar-energy and 90% of nesting occurred when the estimated average amount of energy available in the heathland per pair exceeded that required to support parents and young. Most nesting and the highest nectar production consistently occurred between April and July.  相似文献

Explanations for the coexistence of migratory and sedentary (resident) birds are much debated: some authors have suggested that migrants make use of surplus resources not exploited by residents, whereas others have recorded ecological shifts in residents during periods when migrants are present. These shifts have been ascribed to the presence of migrants but could equally reflect seasonal variation in the distribution of resources required by sedentary species. Here we assess how the abundance of migrants affects the territorial behaviour and habitat use of resident Sardinian Warblers Sylvia melanocephala at a stop‐over site on the Rock of Gibraltar. There was a significant positive relationship between the abundance of migrants and the distances moved, time spent calling and the species and functional diversity of plants used by Sardinian Warblers on a daily basis, suggesting that migrants have a significant impact on residents.  相似文献

Abstract Patterns of habitat use by Pseudomys novaehollandiae and Mus domesticus were investigated on a 6. 8 ha area of coastal heathland, almost five years after it last burned in Myall Lakes National Park. One hundred and fifty-one trap stations were positioned on 17 traplines across a mosaic of interlocking macrohabitats. This pattern was a consequence of the site's topography and to a lesser extent fire history. Multivariate statistical procedures were employed to identify those microhabitat parameters that contribute to both individual species’ habitat use and the partitioning of habitat to reduce competition for space. Trapping results show P. novaehollandiae to be almost three times as abundant as M. domesticus at this time, although M. domesticus does show strong regional, and hence local, fluctuations in abundance over time. Both species exhibit habitat selection (P< 0. 05) with individuals preferring dry, tall closed heath and open heathland habitats. Immature P. novaehollandiae (< 15 g) were found mostly in short dense wet heath and may have been dispersing. Species exhibit high between-habitat overlap using Pianka's formula (0. 88). This overlap is substantially reduced within macrohabitats (0. 28), when trap stations are considered as resource states, suggesting a considerable degree of microhabitat separation at the trap station level. Discriminant function and multiple regression analyses identify microhabitat selection that is not strongly focused, suggesting both species to be spatial generalists. Elevation was selected as the most significant variable in these analyses and represents a soil moisture gradient that determines changes in the floristic and structural components of the biotic environment. No single habitat variable was found to explain within-habitat separation convincingly, however, when a factor analysis of habitat variables was used to produce a reduced three-dimensional factor space the outcome was marked. The 95% confidence envelopes for the distribution of each species show an extremely low overlap in factor space, with a zero overlap in the X-Y plane and less than 1% overlap in theY-Z plane. Differential micro-habitat selection does produce effective habitat partitioning, thus facilitating coexistence of these two species. We suspect this occurs primarily by M. domesticus altering habitat selection. There is evidence to suggest that M. domesticus acts as a fugitive species occupying resource niches left vacant by P. novaehollandiae and other small mammal species coexisting on the study area.  相似文献

Nectar availability in Calothamnus quadrifidus flowers was studied at Wongamine Nature Reserve in late spring (November). Despite some overnight depletion by moths and other invertebrates, more nectar was present in flowers at dawn than at the preceding dusk. Significant nectar depletion occurred within a few hours after dawn, mainly due to foraging by two honeyeater species. Lichmera indistincta and Phylidonyris nigra. Thereafter, nectar availability was maintained at relatively low levels, principally because of foraging by honeyeaters and honey bees. Apis mellifera, that became active during the warmer part of the day. Although individual honeyeaters consumed more nectar than A. mellifera, honey bees were so abundant that their total impact was greater than that of either honeyeater species for much of the day. Transfer of C. quadrifidus pollen between flowers is necessary in order to achieve a high level of seed set, as the flowers appear to be protandrous. Honeyeaters appeared to be considerably more significant pollen vectors than A. mellifera.  相似文献

Identifying environmentally driven changes in traits that serve an ecological function is essential for predicting evolutionary outcomes of climate change. We examined population genetic structure, sex‐specific dispersal patterns, and morphology in relation to rainfall patterns across an island and three peninsulas in South Australia. The study system was the New Holland Honeyeater (Phylidonyris novaehollandiae), a nectarivorous passerine that is a key pollinator species. We predicted that rainfall‐related mechanisms would be driving local adaptation of morphological traits, such that in areas of lower rainfall, where nectar is less available, more insectivorous traits – shorter, deeper bills, longer tarsi, and longer wings – would be favored. The study populations differed in phenotype across the Eyre, Yorke, and Fleurieu Peninsulas and Kangaroo Island despite high gene flow (single continuous population) and sex‐biased dispersal (males were philopatric and females dispersed). We tested the role of rainfall in shaping the observed phenotypic differences, and found strong support for our predicted relationships: birds in areas of higher rainfall had higher condition indices, as well as longer bill‐head length, deeper bills, and shorter tarsi. Bill depth in males in high‐rainfall sites showed signals of stabilizing selection, suggesting local adaptation. In addition to these local indications of selection, a global pattern of directional selection toward larger size for bill‐head length, bill‐nostril length, and wing length was also observed. We suggest this pattern may reflect an adaptive response to the relatively dry conditions that South Australia has experienced over the last decade. We conclude that rainfall has shaped aspects of phenology in P. novaehollandiae, both locally, with different patterns of stabilizing and directional selection, and globally, with evidence of adaptive divergence at a landscape scale.  相似文献

The seasonal movements of Gurney's Sugarbird Promerops gurneyi were studied in the Lydenburg area, eastern Transvaal, South Africa. Influx into the suburban habitat occurred durin the winter when the birds left the mountains at the end of the flowering period of Protea roupelliae. Birifs were mistnetted and each adult colour-ringed with a unique combination for individual recognition. In all, 256 Sugarbirds were ed in the mountain habitat and 50 in the suburban habitat. Of the unringed individuals 22,2 % were ted on cliffs with aloes and 79,3 % around P. roupelliae clumps late in the season. Of the ringed birds 25 (9,7%) were retrapped at sites in the mountain and 10 (3.9%) showed seasonal movements; 6 (8,3%) were recaptured in the same town localities where originally ringed. Mean distance moved was 7 km. An overall recapture rate of 7,5% was recorded during this study. When nectar became scarce the birds started moving away and utilized other food sources. Protea roupelliae showed a flowering peak from October to February which coincided with the sugarbirds' breeding season.  相似文献

Several researchers have attempted to calculate whether depression of nectar resources by Australian honeyeaters is likely to limit their densities. Such calculations can be misleading, however, and do not directly test whether birds depress nectar availability. I monitored changes in nectar availability during the 8–9 months that honeyeaters bred in heathland near Sydney, and caged inflorescences to test whether nectar availability was being depressed by birds. There were pronounced seasonal changes in nectar availability in each of 2 years, and caging substantially increased the amounts of nectar in inflorescences during months when nectar production was low. The effects of caging must have resulted from exclusion of honeyeaters, as: (i) open-ended cage controls showed that the effects of caging resulted from exclusion of foragers, not from artifacts of caging; (ii) day-only and night-only caging showed that nectar was depleted only during the day: and (iii) observations showed that cages did not exclude any diurnal foragers other than honeyeaters. Resident honeyeaters spent more time foraging during months when nectar was scarce, implying that the rates at which they could obtain nectar were affected by changes in nectar availability. It is therefore possible that the depletion of nectar by honeyeaters could have limited their densities. However. I argue that such limitation could only be inferred safely if nectar-supplementation experiments showed survival and/or reproduction to be limited by nectar availability.  相似文献

The effect of UV radiation on habitat use of two species of intertidal fishes that inhabit the same pools but exhibit different activity levels and diets was measured: the highly active omnivorous Girella laevifrons and the cryptic carnivorous Graus nigra. Individuals of each species were acclimated to a tank divided in three sections with different illumination; no light (NL), ultraviolet light (UV) and white light (WL), and the time spent and number of visits to each section were recorded. Although both species preferred the NL section, G. laevifrons spent more time in UV and less time in WL compared with G. nigra; G. laevifrons also displayed higher number of visits to UV, suggesting a different tendency in space use in response to UV exposure in intertidal fishes.  相似文献

Although it is clear that the farmlands neighbouring fragmented forests are utilized by some forest birds, it is not clear how birds in general respond to farmland habitat mosaic. An effort was made to determine how bird density and foraging assemblages were influenced by farm structural characteristics and distance from forest edge. Thirty farms up to a distance of 12 km around Kakamega forest in western Kenya were studied. Farm structure entailed size, hedge volume, habitat heterogeneity, woody plant density, plant diversity and crop cover. Birds were surveyed using line transects and DISTANCE analyses and classified into six feeding guilds and three habitat associations. Size of farms increased away from the forest, as woody plant density, plant diversity, indigenous trees and subsistence crop cover declined. The most important farm structure variable was hedge volume, which enhanced bird species richness, richness of shrub‐land bird species and insectivorous bird density (R = 0.58, P < 0.01). Bird density increased with tree density while indigenous trees were suitable for insectivores and nectarivores. There were very few forest bird encounters. Agricultural practices incorporating maintenance of hedges and sound selection of agroforestry trees can enhance conservation of birds on farmland, though, not significantly for forest species.  相似文献

In southern Africa, Aloe marlothii flowers during the dry winter season and offers copious dilute nectar to a variety of birds. Avian abundance and community composition were monitored at an A. marlothii forest at Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve, South Africa. Sampling occurred during two summer months (February–March) when no flowers were present, and six months (May–October) that spanned the winter flowering. We hypothesized that an influx of occasional nectarivores to the A. marlothii forest during flowering would lead to significant changes in the avian community. Overall bird abundance increased 2–3 fold at the peak of nectar availability (August). We recorded 38 bird species, of 83 species detected during transects, feeding on A. marlothii nectar; this diverse assemblage of birds belonged to 19 families, including Lybiidae, Coliidae, Pycnonotidae, Sylviidae, Cisticolidae, Muscicapidae, Sturnidae, Ploceidae and Fringillidae. Surprisingly, only two species of sunbird (Nectariniidae) were observed feeding on A. marlothii nectar, and both occurred in low abundance. We predicted that competition for nectar resources would be high, but few aggressive inter- and intra-specific interactions occurred between birds while feeding on inflorescences. During peak flowering, insect feeders (insectivores, omnivores, nectarivores) fed on nectar during the cold morning when insect activity was low, whilst non-insect feeders (frugivores and granivores) fed on nectar in the middle of the day. Our study highlights the importance of A. marlothii nectar as a seasonal food and water source for a diverse assemblage of occasional nectarivores.  相似文献

Several species of migrant birds overlap in range on their wintering grounds with non-migrant conspecifics or other species that occupy a similar niche. Very little is known whether such overlap results in competition and subsequent habitat segregation since it is usually impossible to separate resident from migrant individuals. The Loggerhead Shrike (Lanius ludovicianus) is a declining grassland species in North America that winters in the southern United States and Mexico. Using stable-hydrogen isotope (δD) analysis of feathers, we identified resident and migrant shrikes wintering in northeastern Mexico based on a latitudinal gradient in precipitation and feather δD values. Indicator species analyses showed that migrants occupied areas where bare ground was less available than those occupied by residents, a pattern which held when a more restricted set of birds from the extremes of the δD distribution were considered. This provides evidence for conspecific habitat segregation. Habitat differences were also found between sites occupied by shrikes and apparently suitable but unoccupied sites. Shrikes occupied more open sites that contained shorter tall shrubs and huisache (Acacia farneasiana) and fewer tall shrubs, mesquite (Prosopsis glandulosa) and huisache than unoccupied sites. The availability of suitable winter habitat and the potential competition between migrants and residents may be factors that influence the population dynamics of migrant shrikes in North America.  相似文献

We investigated the habitat selected by two Palaearctic migrants (Pied Flycatcher, Ficedula hypoleuca, Willow Warbler, Phylloscopus trochilus) in a patchy landscape in Ivory Coast and compared it with the habitat selection of Afrotropical species in the same foraging guilds. Transect counts were used to test the hypothesis that migrants use more open and more seasonal habitats and have a broader use of habitats compared with resident species. Habitats compared were, in order of decreasing tree density, gallery forest, an isolated forest and bush/tree savanna. The isolated forest had the most pronounced seasonal changes (deciduous trees) and was the one with the most diverse vegetation structure. The habitat where both migrants were most frequent was the isolated forest, and thus occurred in the habitat with the most pronounced seasonal change. Diversity of habitats selected was highest in migrants but in the Pied Flycatcher this was possibly an artefact due to subdominant individuals being excluded from the preferred habitat by territorial birds. Potential competition for habitat with Afrotropical species was found to be low.  相似文献

Theobroma cacao plantings, when managed under the shade of rainforest trees, provide habitat for many resident and migratory bird species. We compared the bird diversity and community structure in organic cacao farms and nearby forest fragments throughout mainland Bocas del Toro, Panama. We used this dataset to ask the following questions: (1) How do bird communities using cacao habitat compare to communities of nearby forest fragments? (2) To what extent do Northern migratory birds use shaded cacao farms, and do communities of resident birds shift their abundances in cacao farms seasonally? (3) Do small scale changes in shade management of cacao farms affect bird diversity? Using fixed radius point counts and additional observations, we recorded 234 landbird species, with 102 species that were observed in both cacao and forest fragments, 86 species that were only observed in cacao farms, and 46 species that were restricted to forest fragments. Cacao farms were rich in canopy and edge species such as tanagers, flycatchers and migratory warblers, but understory insectivores were nearly absent from cacao farms. We observed 27 migratory species, with 18 species in cacao farms only, two species in forest only, and seven species that occurred in both habitats. In cacao farms, the diversity of birds was significantly greater where there was less intensive management of the canopy shade trees. Shade tree species richness was most important for explaining variance in bird diversity. Our study shows that shaded cacao farms in western Panama provide habitat for a wide variety of resident and migratory bird species. Considering current land use trends in the region, we suggest that action must be taken to prevent conversion away from shaded cacao farms to land uses with lower biodiversity conservation value.  相似文献

Most small birds wintering in the tropics should show little subcutaneous fat deposition (SFD), except in habitats where food availability may decline in late winter or, for some resident species, to prepare for incubation or brooding fasts. However, these predictions need re‐examination in light of a new, precise, cross‐validated method to compare SFD among habitats and species. We sampled 170 Nearctic‐Neotropical migrant and 279 resident birds during early and late winter in 1993 and 1994 in Jamaica, West Indies. Habitats, from greatest to least expected availability of insect prey, were (1) mangrove forest, (2) montane/foothills forest and cultivation, (3) dry limestone forest, and (4) acacia scrub. Percent lipid, estimated from multiple‐regression models using visual fat scoring (0–8 scale), total‐body electrical conductivity, and a variety of morphometrics, was categorized by percentile ranks to determine if SFD varied by habitat, season, or age for all species, resident species, migrant species, and several individual species. SFD averaged ~ 13% total mass for all birds, ranging from 8–24% for well‐sampled species. The few bird species in acacia scrub, primarily two facultative long‐distance migrants, averaged ~ 26% lipid content, significantly more than birds in other habitats. Most birds did not vary in SFD in the other three habitats, although Common Yellowthroats (Geothlypis trichas) had greater SFD in dry limestone habitat than in montane habitat. Bananaquits (Coereba flaveola) and Jamaican Euphonias (Euphonia jamaica) in montane habitat, especially in early winter, had higher SFD than other resident species. Contrary to our prediction, adults and juveniles had similar SFD, with the exception of juveniles having more SFD than adults in acacia scrub habitat. Winter fat deposition (or, in some cases, muscle‐protein catabolism) in the tropics may be an overlooked strategy, potentially important as a hedge against fasting for floaters, facultative migrants, some territorial migrants in habitats with seasonal declines in food resources, and some resident species prior to breeding.  相似文献

In this paper we assess the evidence for altitudinal movements of forest birds from the montane forests of the Eastern Arc mountains of East Africa to nearby lowland forest patches. For 34 montane species, including all the Eastern Arc endemics except Banded Green Sunbird Anthreptes rubritorques there is no evidence that they undertake seasonal movements to lower altitudes. An additional 26 montane species, of somewhat wider distribution, have been recorded at low (<500 m) altitudes during the cold/dry season (June to September). Most records of these montane birds at lower altitudes are from sites adjoining montane forest areas, although a few records are from lowland coastal forests at 100–240 km distance from montane areas. Only five of the 26 species (White-chested Alethe Alethe fulleborni, White-starred Forest Robin Pogonocichla stellata, Orange Ground Thrush Zoothera gurneyi, Evergreen Forest Warbler Bradypterus mariae and Barred Long-tailed Cuckoo Cercococcyx montanus) are regularly and commonly reported in the lowlands. They are also found in the lowlands in small numbers during the warm/wet season (October to February), when they may breed. The abundance of at least four, and probably more, of the forest birds with a more widespread distribution in the lowland and montane forests of East Africa declines greatly at high altitudes from the onset of the cold/wet season (February) and only increases again at the start of the warm/wet season (September). It is not known how far these species move as they cannot be easily separated from resident populations in lowland forests, and there are no ringing recoveries in different forests. Altitudinal migration of a proportion of the Eastern Arc avifauna is the most likely explanation for available data, although source-sink metapopulation theories may be helpful to explain the distributions of some species. As the movement of forest birds from the Eastern Arc to the lowland forests does not involve the rare endemics, they are of lower conservation concern, but the presence of montane and lowland forest may be important for the long-term survival of some more widely distributed forest species.  相似文献
