The geographical limits of Nothofagus cunninghamii are highly correlated with climate and appear to be more or less in equilibrium with the climate of the present century in all but one of the areas of its present range. It is suggested that suitable climates for the species occur in the highlands of northeastern Victoria and southern New South Wales, beyond its present range, and it is possible that it occurred within the predicted area prior to the last ice age. It is suggested that populations of N. cunninghamii along the northeastern edge of its present range in the Central Highlands of Victoria may be migrating northeast along a narrow corridor of apparently suitable climate to re-occupy the postulated former range. The rate of migration would be expected to be extremely slow because of the poor dispersal ability of the species and the adverse impact of recurrent fires.  相似文献

An attempt is made to identify the location and nature of areas in which the cool temperate rainforest tree Nothofagus cunninghamii may have survived the glacial period, using fossil pollen data from sites at different altitudes in the Central Highlands of Victoria, Australia.

At one high altitude site Nothofagus has been recorded consistently through the latter part of the Pleistocence including the height of the last glacial. There was a postglacial expansion at most sites to a maximum extent in the early to middle Holocene, followed by a decline at all sites and elimination from two of the lower altitude sites.

The persistence of Nothofagus pollen through the height of the last glacial in a sheltered high altitude site supports the concept of glacial refugia, and leads to the query as to how Nothofagus survived the glacial under winter temperatures several degrees lower than those supporting the tree today. Evidence from evolutionary history, clinal variation in morphology and physiology along altitudinal or environmental gradients, and recent work on leaf physiognomy and ecophysiology contribute to possible explanations.

Elimination of Nothofagus from lower altitude sites after the middle Holocene raises the possibility of a shifting pattern of distribution, with long term survival dependent on the continued existence of locations suitable for the tree through the range of glacial and interglacial conditions. Fossil pollen data provide support for the occurrence of such locations in mountainous areas in sheltered gullies protected from fire.  相似文献

The Towada-a (To-a) Tephra from A.D. 915 allowed reconstruction of the local and regional vegetation at and near Ohse-yachi Mire from pollen samples taken just below the tephra. In earlier studies the tephra was dated from 14C data, stratigraphy at archaeological sites and a historical record. Twelve cores along two perpendicular transects yielded pollen from modern and pre-tephra samples. The modern pollen data were compared with the modern vegetation, and used to interpret the pollen data from A.D. 915. Ericaceae, Drosera, Sanguisorba, other Rosaceae, and Sphagnum were concluded to be local elements. Ohse-yachi Mire was a wet Sphagnum bog in A.D. 915, with Sphagnum dominating the central part of the mire. The present stand of scrub was not yet established, but there was a stand of Pinus pumila scrub. The bog subsequently became drier and changed to the present-day mixed Moliniopsis-Sphagnum bog.  相似文献

Seedlings of the cool temperate rainforest tree species, Nothofagus cunninghamii, Atherosperma moschatum, Eucryphia lucida, Phyllocladus aspleniifolius, Lagarostrobos franklinii and Athrotaxis selaginoides, were grown in various light regimes and their instantaneous lightdependence curves and relative growth rates were measured. A. moschatum had the highest relative growth rate of all species in heavy shade, and its light-dependence curves were also characteristic of a relatively shade-tolerant species. A. selaginoides and L. franklinii seedlings raised in heavy shade had low instantaneous light compensation points but their growth rates were not distinct from that of N. cunninghamii. The maximum relative growth rate of the gymnosperms was low due to a low specific leaf area and leaf area ratio, although the maximum rates of photosynthesis on a leaf area basis were similar to N. cunninghamii and E. lucida. The low leaf area ratio and specific leaf area affected both the relative growth rate and the growth light compensation point. Although in the heaviest shade treatment there was no difference in growth rate between N. cunninghamii, E. lucida, L. franklinii and A. selaginoides, in moderate shade treatments N. cunninghamii had a higher relative growth rate than the gymnosperms and a higher maximum rate of photosynthesis on a leaf dry weight basis than all species when raised in semi-shaded natural light conditions. These species commonly occur in mixture in Tasmanian cool temperate rainforest and these results are discussed in terms of forest dynamics.  相似文献

Aim Comparative responses of Nothofagus species to water deficits were studied to determine whether rainfall regimes could limit the latitudinal ranges of tropical and temperate forest species. Location The study species are native to New Guinea, New Caledonia, Australia, New Zealand, Chile and Argentina. Methods Seedlings of Nothofagus species from a broad latitudinal range were grown in a common environment. Changes in conductance, relative water content and water potential were measured in detached shoots, and together with measurements of tissue injury and biomass allocation, were compared between tropical and temperate species. Results Differences in responses to water deficits between tropical and temperate species appear to reflect differences in climate regimes. In particular, species native to ever‐wet rainfall regimes in New Guinea, where water deficits are generally likely to be short‐lived, were effective at conserving water by reduced stomatal conductance. In contrast, high‐latitude evergreen species on average showed greater development of traits that should enhance water uptake. This was particularly evident in Nothofagus cunninghamii from southern Australia, which developed low water potentials at moderate levels of tissue water deficit and higher root:leaf biomass than tropical species, potentially allowing carbon assimilation to be maximized during warmer, but drier, summer months. However, water relations varied among high‐latitude species. In particular, deciduous species on average showed higher rates of conductance, even during moderate levels of tissue water deficit, than evergreen species. Main conclusions The tropical species appear to conserve water during periods of water deficit (relative to temperate species), which is unlikely to have substantial opportunity costs for growth in ever‐wet climates. However, spread of tropical species to higher latitudes may be limited by water conservation strategies that limit carbon gain in climates in which temperature seasonality is often paired with drier summers. Evergreen species from high latitudes, such as N. cunninghamii, commonly showed traits that should increase water uptake. However, this strategy, while probably maximizing growth in temperate climates with cool winters and drier summers, must limit competitiveness at lower latitudes in summer‐wet climates. We conclude that responses to water regimes may make a significant contribution to the latitudinal limits of some evergreen rain forest species.  相似文献

The warmer and drier climates projected for the mid‐ to late‐21st century may have particularly adverse impacts on the cool temperate rainforests of southeastern Australia. Southern beech (Nothofagus cunninghamii; Nothofagaceae), a dominant tree species in these forests, may be vulnerable to minor changes in its climate envelope, especially at the edge of the species range, with Holocene fossil evidence showing local extinction of populations in response to small climate changes. We modelled the stability of this species climate envelope using the maximum entropy algorithm implemented in Maxent and two thresholds of presence/absence by projecting the modern climate envelope onto four Global Circulation Models forecasted for two time periods (2050s and 2070s). The climate envelope, as estimated from the species present climatic range, is predicted to shrink by up to 49% by the 2050s and up to 64% by the 2070s. The greatest predicted reduction is in Victoria with 91–100% of its current range being climatically unsuitable by the 2070s. Climatically similar areas to the species present range are predicted to remain in mountainous areas of western Tasmania, the Northeast Highlands of Tasmania, and the Baw Baw Plateau in the Central Highlands of Victoria. However, region‐specific modelling approaches made very different predictions from the whole‐range based models, especially in the severity of the predicted decline for Victorian populations of N. cunninghamii which occur in much warmer climates than the rest of the species geographical range. This shows that, for widespread species that span a range of climate zones, the exposure of current populations to climate change may be better modelled using a regional based approach. How the species responds to climate change will depend on the species ability to respond to drier and warmer climates and the concomitant increase in fire intensity.  相似文献

A generalized pollen diagram, associated with three simplified pollen diagrams from Tsubogakure (1,500 m), Nakatashiro (1,400 m) and Yashima-ga-hara (1,650 m) bogs in central Japan, represents five pollen zones for the last 12,000 years, i.e., L (before 10,500 B.P., pine-boreal); R I (10,500–9,500 B.P., boreal-oak); R II (9,500–4,500 B.P., temperate); R IIIa (4,500–1,500 B.P., temperate-boreal); and R IIIb (after 1,500 B.P., pino-nonarboreal). Absolute pollen frequency is high in well-humified peat, in gyttja (deposited immediately below the first peat formation), and in peat in the part of the R IIIa cooling stage, and it is low in less-humified peat, since the former sediments have slow and the latter rapid rates of accumulation, respectively. Changes of plant communities should affect the absolute pollen frequency, but changes of sedimentation rates are more critical. After a re-examination of Nakatashiro bog, it is hardly possible to recognize a recurrence surface in the European sense, nor can the accumulation of thin tephra on the bog surface be responsible for a temporary halt in peat growth. Nakatashiro bog (like Tsubogakure bog) is a low-moor bog, and true recurrence surfaces would not be expected in it. In a raised Yashima-ga-hara bog, however, there are seven recurrence surfaces without a volcanic ash band; the well-humified horizons correspond to low values of Sphagnum spores and Cyperaceae pollen, and the less-humified horizons to high values of Sphagnum spores and Cyperaceae pollen. Peaks of these species in the upper core correspond to those Cryptomeria pollen, an indicator of the high precipitation (generally >1,800 mm/yr). Regularly interrelated fluctuations among these species, absolute pollen frequency, and peat horizons suggest that the precipitation was low in well-humified peat and was high in less-humified peat.  相似文献

Ryegrass pollen (Lolium species) is a widespread source of air-borne allergens and is a major cause of hayfever and seasonal allergic asthma, which affect approximately 25% of the population in cool temperate climates. The main allergens of ryegrass pollen are the proteins Lol p 1 and Lol p 2. These proteins belong to two major classes of grass pollen allergens to which over 90% of pollen-allergic patients are sensitive. The functional role in planta of these pollen allergen proteins remains largely unknown. Here we describe the generation and analysis of transgenic plants with reduced levels of the main ryegrass pollen allergens, Lol p 1 and Lol p 2 in the most important worldwide cultivated ryegrass species, L. perenne and L. multiflorum. These transgenic plants will allow the study of the functional role in planta of these pollen proteins and the determination of potential for development of hypo-allergenic ryegrass cultivars.  相似文献

In the Maujahn peat bog the Slavic period is recorded with a high-resolution pollen diagram in 150 cm of the peat profile. In the upper part of the pollen diagram the time resolution is 3.2 years in the middle and lower part 5.2 years. The Slavic period can be divided into four stages according to different kind of land use and intensity of human influence. The main crop was Secale; less important was the cultivation of Triticum, Panicum, Hordeum, Avena and Pisum. The Slavic period lasted from about a.d. 800–1200. The pollen diagram also displays a final part of the Migration period.  相似文献

Cool temperate rainforest in Australia is commonly dominated by Nothofagus species. In Victoria and Tasmania, Nothofagus cunninghamii dominates old rainforest on optimal sites and is able to regenerate continuously. Size structure analysis of the major lowland tree species in this forest suggest that no major changes in species composition or dominance are occurring. This contrasts with the status of Nothofagus in lowland rainforest in New Zealand and rainforest below about 1000 m a.s.l. in south-central Chile. N. cunninghamii is a relatively light-demanding species, and is maintaining its dominance by seedling regeneration in canopy gaps created by the death of old individuals. The dynamics of the cool temperate rainforest in northern New South Wales are more complex. These forests are dominated by Nothofagus moorei, and size structure analysis indicates that persistence of this species within the rainforest is dependent on vegetative regeneration. On some sites this rainforest is being actively invaded by warm temperate and sub-tropical elements from lower altitudes. In these areas N. moorei in unable to regenerate beneath the canopy.Nomenclature follows Curtis (1963, 1967), Curtis & Morris (1975) and Williams (1982).We thank Mr. A. Floyd of the N.S.W. Abstract

Pollen analysis of the sediments of a bog on the slopes of Panià di Corfino (Apennines, near Lucca). Fossil pollens in the sediments of a bog situated on the slopes of Pania di Corfino (Lucca) have been studied. The site studied lies on oligocenic rocks and is surrounded by beeches.

From a depth of 120 cm up to 50 cm the prevailing pollens belong to species typical of beech and silver-fir woods. Layers from 50 to 25 cm contain mostly pollen of herbaceous plants and of Ericales shrubs, especially belonging to the genus Vaccinium. The upper layers (25 to 5 cm) show a prevalence of Pinus mugo pollen. These data suggest that, after a long period during which climatic conditions resembled those of the present, a shift to a colder climate lowered the upper limit of the beechwoods.  相似文献

Abstract The late Quaternary vegetation communities of the south-central highlands of Victoria are reconstructed from analyses of pollen and charcoal, and associated environmental conditions derived from the record of Nothofagus cunninghamii and alpine and sclerophyll taxa preserved in four subalpine Sphagnum bogs. The highest site occurs amid Eucalyptus paudflora woodland, the two intermediate sites are surrounded by Eucalyptus delegatensis forest and the lowest by a mixed forest of E. delegatensis/Eucalyptus regnans. Small pockets of N. cunninghamii occur within the eucalypt forests, and in close proximity to all four sites. Around 32 000 BP the vegetation consisted of a mosaic of alpine feldmark and herbfield, with small scattered groves of Nothofagus and Eucalyptus well below 1100m. Summer temperatures were probably 5°C lower than present with lowest values, probably 7° to 8°C below present, possibly between 17 000 and 13 500 BP, at which time alpine communities reached their greatest extent and much of the Central Highlands was treeless. After ca 13 500 BP herbaceous alpine taxa disappeared and there was an associated movement upslope of Nothofagus and tall open forest taxa to their maximum post-glacial extent, as temperatures and effective precipitation increased, ca 6000 BP. The retraction of cool temperate rainforest and wet sclerophyll or tall open forest towards present day values indicates lower effective precipitation, generally rising temperatures and increased fire hazard. More recently, European activities have increased the stress on the remaining forests. The study of four sites has demonstrated die importance of analysing a number of sites within a given area in order to overcome the limitations imposed by sites which were sub-optimal due to one or more factors including poor preservation, problems of dating, variable sedimentation rates, and the influence of streams which flow close to all sites. While die local environment varies between sites, and some vegetation changes are successional, this study shows that the local records complement one another, to some extent reinforcing die regional picture of vegetation and environmental change.  相似文献

Logné, one of three raised bogs (Hochmoor) in the Massif Armorican, was officially designated as a nature reserve in 1987 and is of considerable ecological interest from botanical, ornithological and herpetological aspects. Palynological investigations reveal the history of local and regional vegetation during the last ca. 4000 years. From the end of the Neolithic Age to the present day, changes in the bog appear to have been considerably influenced by variations in local watertable level that may be of natural origin or caused by human activity. Alder carr withOsmunda regalis, which was the dominant vegetation around the periphery of the bog at ca. 4200 B.P., underwent many changes. Its final demise occurred in Gallo-Roman times when the local landscape took on a distinctly open appearance. The first clear evidence for cereal cultivation relates to the Bronze Age. After a decline in farming at the beginning of the Iron Age, there was a strong renewal of farming in the La Tène period, which included a distinct arable component and also records forJuglans andCastanea pollen. The timing of the introduction of walnut and chestnut to the Massif Armorican is discussed.  相似文献

Nothofagus cunninghamii (myrtle) has a widespread distribution through the temperate rainforest of southeastern Australia with some disjunct populations existing in putative glacial refugia. Polymorphic nuclear markers are required to resolve the biogeographical history of the species and will also be useful for conservation and forestry applications in this and other species of Nothofagus. Fourteen polymorphic microsatellite loci were isolated from N. cunninghamii, with four to 10 alleles amplified in 15 individuals tested. Transferability to other species of Nothofagus was successful, with six loci transferring to all eight other species tested.  相似文献

  • 1 Newly-emerged, second-instar jack pine budworm (Choristoneura pinus Freeman) establish spring feeding sites preferentially in the pollen cones of their host tree, Pinus banksiana Lamb.
  • 2 Laboratory studies showed that the rate of establishment and survival of jack pine budworm on pollen cones was high throughout the entire spring emergence period of the insect.
  • 3 In contrast, the rate of establishment and survival of jack pine budworm on vegetative buds was very poor early in the spring. Vegetative buds were only acceptable as feeding sites to the jack pine budworm for a relatively brief period in late spring.
  • 4 Field studies showed that the change in population density of jack pine budworm during the spring emergence stage, as expressed by k-values, was a function of the abundance of pollen cones in the stand. Population reduction was greatest in those stands with the fewest pollen cones.
  • 5 Direct measurement of spring dispersal by jack pine budworm showed that dispersal and consequent losses to the budworm population were greatest in stands with the fewest pollen cones.
  • 6 We conclude that changes in the density of jack pine budworm are strongly influenced by production of pollen cones in the host stand. Because pollen cone production is related to previous years of defoliation by the jack pine budworm, we propose that pollen cones act as a density-dependent factor governing the density of early-stage jack pine budworm.
  • 7 The resulting dynamics are compared to those of other budworm species and used to explain observed regional and temporal patterns of jack pine budworm outbreaks.

Late Quaternary vegetation and climatic history of eastern Nepal   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The late Quaternary vegetation and climatic history at high altitude in eastern Nepal was studied through stratigraphy, radiocarbon dating and pollen analysis. The Thulo Pokhari lake (27°41′ N, 87°43′ E, ca. 3980 m a.s.l.) is just above the subalpine Abies spectabilis–Betula utilis forest zone and surrounded by Rhododendron scrub. The climate in the studied area is very humid under the influence of the monsoon. Silty sediments suggesting lake conditions prevailed at the lower part of the sediment samples, whereas the upper part consisted mainly of herbaceous peat indicating a mire condition. The pollen record extends back to ca. 11000 yr bp . Although the absence of major changes between the pollen assemblages of the Pleistocene and those in the Holocene was attributed to the situation of the sampling plot above the forest limit, the results suggest the following history. (1) The abundance of Pinus pollen around 11000 yr bp represents expansion of the area unoccupied by late successional trees and/or a drier condition. Significant occurrence of Picea pollen is noteworthy, since this genus is absent in eastern Nepal at present in spite of its wide distribution throughout the neighbouring areas of the Himalayas. (2) The increase in abundance of Quercus pollen and the decline in Pinus pollen in the latest Pleistocene represent climatic amelioration favourable to late successional mesophytes. (3) The climate was most moist and mild in the SP-III, although the absolute age of the pollen zone is not distinct. The percentages of broadleaved trees such as Alnus, Betula, Carpinus and Corylus were increased at the expense of Quercus and coniferous pollen types. Sedimentation was interrupted by lake level decline and/or glacial advance during the period from ca. 11000–1600 yr bp . (4) The increase in abundance of coniferous pollen types such as Pinus, Abies and Tsuga indicates that the climate became drier and cooler, and the present subalpine forest zone composed of A. spectabilis, T. dumosa and Betula utilis was established around 1600 yr bp . The formation of bog or alpine meadow vegetation during the period was shown by the 14C dates of the peat and the increase in Rosaceae and herbaceous pollen. (5) The increase in abundance of Ericaceae and Alnus pollen in the SP-V indicates that the present alpine Rhododendron scrub zone has been established since ca. 940 yr bp as a result of human influence on the original vegetation. This interpretation is supported by the decline in the proportion of arboreal pollen. Since the age of the initiation of human influence varies with the altitude and region, further study will be necessary to determine the accurate age.  相似文献

Temperature has a major influence on the rate of embryonic development in ectothermic organisms. While incubation experiments unambiguously show that constant high temperature accelerates development and shortens embryonic life, studies on the effect of fluctuating temperatures have generated contradictory results. Grass snakes (Natrix natrix) occur at latitudes and altitudes that are unusually cool for an oviparous reptile. In these cool climates females typically lay their eggs in heat‐generating anthropogenic microhabitats that provide either a highly fluctuating (compost piles) or a relatively constant (manure heaps) thermal nesting environment. A laboratory experiment with fluctuating and constant incubation temperatures mimicking those recorded in such nests in the field showed that this nest‐site dichotomy influences the development of the embryos, and the morphology and locomotor performance of the hatchlings. The incubation period increased at fluctuating temperatures and the fact that the rate of embryonic development showed a decelerating pattern with temperature suggests that periods of low temperature had a relatively larger influence on average development than periods of high temperature. Our study demonstrates how a dichotomy in the nesting environments available to female grass snakes in cool climates can affect variation in the duration of the incubation period and offspring phenotypes in ways that may have consequences for fitness. © 2012 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2012, ??, ??–??.  相似文献

Pollen data from the Rooty Breaks swamp – a Sphagnum bog surrounded by Atherosperma-Elaeocarpus rainforest – in the eastern Victorian highlands appears to reflect changes in the mode of pollen and spore deposition at the study site, from the time sediments began accumulating at about 5500 BP until the present day. In the lower half of the deposit, pollen of rainforest taxa is more common than it is in the top half, while Eucalyptus pollen reflects the reverse situation. Although the pollen changes may reflect climatic change it is suggested that most of the pollen and spores in the lower sediment were stream-borne. Later the stream moved away from the site and the records became more representative of atmospheric pollenrain. Throughout the period covered by the pollen diagram the Rooty Breaks swamp itself was dominated by Leptospermum grandifolium. The pollen record shows that the association of important taxa in rainforests of the highlands of eastern Victoria was established by at least 5500 BP. The presence of sparse old eucalypts throughout the area dominated by rainforest suggests that sclerophyll forest was replaced by rainforest in the recent past. However, this change is not evidenced in the pollen diagram.  相似文献

Empirically derived species distributions models (SDMs) are increasingly relied upon to forecast species vulnerabilities to future climate change. However, many of the assumptions of SDMs may be violated when they are used to project species distributions across significant climate change events. In particular, SDM's in theory assume stable fundamental niches, but in practice, they assume stable realized niches. The assumption of a fixed realized niche relative to climate variables remains unlikely for various reasons, particularly if novel future climates open up currently unavailable portions of species’ fundamental niches. To demonstrate this effect, we compare the climate distributions for fossil‐pollen data from 21 to 15 ka bp (relying on paleoclimate simulations) when communities and climates with no modern analog were common across North America to observed modern pollen assemblages. We test how well SDMs are able to project 20th century pollen‐based taxon distributions with models calibrated using data from 21 to 15 ka. We find that taxa which were abundant in areas with no‐analog late glacial climates, such as Fraxinus, Ostrya/Carpinus and Ulmus, substantially shifted their realized niches from the late glacial period to present. SDMs for these taxa had low predictive accuracy when projected to modern climates despite demonstrating high predictive accuracy for late glacial pollen distributions. For other taxa, e.g. Quercus, Picea, Pinus strobus, had relatively stable realized niches and models for these taxa tended to have higher predictive accuracy when projected to present. Our findings reinforce the point that a realized niche at any one time often represents only a subset of the climate conditions in which a taxon can persist. Projections from SDMs into future climate conditions that are based solely on contemporary realized distributions are potentially misleading for assessing the vulnerability of species to future climate change.  相似文献

Pollen has been extracted from six bryophyte and two lichen taxa, sampled from three habitats: upland heath, lowland bog and mixed woodland, in both west and east Scotland. The highest number of pollen taxa was recorded in bothSphagnum andThuidium; the lowest numbers of pollen taxa were recorded in two of the mosses and both lichens. For pollen rain control purposes in herbivore faecal studies, woodland species of bryophytes are not suitable due to the sheltering effects from rain provided by the overhead canopy. Open habitats such as moorland heath and bog provide polsters/mats which normally trap pollen rain more effectively for control purposes. The aim of this study was twofold: to observe the effectiveness of selected polsters and lichens as traps for pollen rain and to establish eventually, whether or not such vegetative traps could be used as controls in pollen spectra analyses of herbivore faeces for the determination of nutritional regime and habitat. From a comparison with recent studies in north west Spain of three taxa in common with Scottish samples,Polytrichum demonstrated a consistently higher number of pollen taxa trapped.Thuidium andCladonia all yielded between one and a half and three times the number of pollen taxa as in the same three bryophyte/lichen taxa sampled in Scotland. Investigation relating the pollen rain trapped in polsters to that in faecal material are continuing, and will be reported in due course.This paper is based on one given by E.C. at the 5th International Aerobiology Conference, held at Bangalore, India, August 1994.  相似文献
