Eight single-caged adult rhesus macaques were given the choice of freely collecting their standard food ration, i.e. 33 biscuits, from an ordinary food box or working for its retrieval from a custom-made food puzzle. During a one-hour observation session following the simultaneous distribution of biscuits in both feeders, individuals spent on average a total of 32 sec retrieving 29.0 biscuits from the food box, and 673 sec retrieving 11.3 biscuits from the food puzzle. It was inferred that the animals voluntarily worked for ordinary food, with the expression of foraging activities serving as its own reward.  相似文献

Sodium transport through the molluscan erythrocyte membrane was examined using 22Na as a tracer. Incubation of the red cells in standard saline resulted in a rapid 22Na uptake reaching steady state concentration (about 21.5 mmol/l cells) in the first 60 min. A similar pattern in the time course of 22Na uptake was seen in the erythrocytes incubated in mantle fluid. The average value of unidirectional Na+ influx, measured as a 5-min 22Na uptake, was 7.76 ± 0.36 mmol/1 cells/5 min or 93 ± 4.3 mmol/1 cells/hr. The initial rate of Na+ influx increased in a saturable fashion as a function of external Na+ concentration with apparent AT., of 380±12mM and Vmax of 14.3 ± 2.4 mmol/1 cells/5 min. Amiloride (1 mM), furosemide (1 mM), and DIDS (0.1 mM) had no effect on either initial Na+ influx (5 min 22Na uptake) or equilibrium Na+ concentration (60 min and 120min 22Na uptake) in the molluscan red cells exposed to standard saline. Quinine (1 mM) caused a significant fall in the initial Na+ influx (by 48%) and in 60-min 22Na uptake (by 32%) as compared with control levels. In the presence of 0.1 mM ouabain, 22Na uptake into the red cells was enhanced by an average 27% and 44% during 60 min and 120 min of cell incubation, respectively. The ouabain-sensitive Na+ accumulation in the red cells reflected a contribution of the Na, K-pump to Na+ transport and the mean value was 5.6 ± 1.0 mmol/1 cells/hr.  相似文献

The growth response of juvenile round gobies was tested in various salinities to assess the potential performance of the species in widely differing salinities in the Baltic Sea and adjacent waters. An experimental approach analysed the survival, daily food intake and growth of juvenile Neogobius melanostomus from the brackish water region of the Kiel Canal, Germany. Round gobies (TL = 61.5 ±5.3 mm; n = 40) were fed ad libitum (diet = mysid shrimp; energy content = 4.7 cal per mg dry weight) at salinity levels of 0.1, 7.5, 15 and 30 over 12 weeks. Two replicate tanks (125 × 30 × 30 cm; 100 L) were maintained for each salinity level, each holding five specimens at a mean temperature of 19.90°C (±0.64°C; n = 136). Survival at all levels was 100%, except for 0.1 with 90%. Mean daily food intake (% of body weight) increased from salinity level 0.1 to 15 (from 17.76% to 19.95%); specimens at level 30 showed a more diversified and lower mean food intake (18.44%). Mean cumulative body weight gain appeared greatest at a level of 7.5 (224.52%), closely followed by 0.1 (206.57%) and 15 (191.92%). In contrast, fish growth was significantly lower at a salinity level of 30 (100.57%). Results of the experiment indicate that salinity tolerance estimates of the round goby made by other authors are too low regarding specimens that stem from brackish habitats. Growth patterns of some specimens, even in the salinity 30 treatment, show that a further spread of this species into regions with higher salinities is quite possible.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the effects of varying forage particle length on chewing activity, sorting behavior, rumen pH and rumen fill in late lactation and dry dairy cattle, fed rations with similar physically effective NDF but different mean particle length. Treatments consisted of three diets differing only in geometric mean length of forage: hay (5.40, 8.96 and 77.90 mm, for short (S), medium (M) and long (L) diets, respectively) for Experiment 1 (E1), and straw (10.16, 24.68 and 80.37 mm) for S, M and L diets, respectively, for Experiment 2 (E2). Hay or straw comprised the sole source of forage (50% and 75% of ration dry matter (DM) for E1 and E2, respectively). Both experiments used three rumen cannulated Holstein dairy cows, in late lactation for E1 and dry in E2, with 3 × 3 Latin square designs with 14 day periods. In E1, DM intake (DMI; 18.3 ± 2.1 kg/day; mean ± s.e.), pH (6.4 ± 0.1), time spent eating (280 ± 22.5 min/day), time spent ruminating (487 ± 17 min/day), and total time spent chewing (767 ± 34 min/day) were not different, whereas eating minutes per kilogram of DMI and NDF intake (NDFI) tended to increase linearly as forage length increased. Rumen digesta volume (l; 113.3 S, 117.8 M and 114.4 L ± 17.1) had a quadratic response, and rumen digesta weight tended to respond quadratically; however, differences were numerically small. In E2, DMI (8.3 ± 1.3 kg/day), pH (6.7 ± 0.1), time spent eating (236 ± 23.5 min/day), time spent ruminating (468 ± 45.2 min/day), total time spent chewing (704 ± 67.7 min/day) and minutes per kilogram NDFI were not different, whereas minutes per kilogram of DMI had a trend for a quadratic effect. Rumen digesta volume (111 ± 18.8 l) and weight (103 ± 17.4 kg) were not different. In both experiments, cows sorted against longer particles as determined by a particle length selection index; this behavior increased linearly as particle length increased. Greater forage particle length increased sorting behavior, but had no effect on rumen fermentation or chewing behavior.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate the localization accuracy of electromagnetic (EM) tracking systems RayPilot (Micropos Medical AB) and Calypso (Varian Medical Systems) in prostate cancer radiotherapy. The accuracy was assessed by comparing couch shifts obtained with the EM methods to the couch shifts determined by simultaneous fiducial marker (FM) based orthogonal kilovoltage (kV) imaging. Agreement between the methods was compared using Bland-Altman analysis. Interfractional positional stability of the FMs, RayPilot transmitters and Calypso transponders was investigated. 582 fractions from 22 RayPilot patients and 335 fractions from 26 Calypso patients were analyzed. Mean (± standard deviation (SD)) differences between RayPilot and kV imaging were 0.3 ± 2.2, −2.2 ± 2.4 and −0.0 ± 1.0 mm in anterior-posterior (AP), superior-inferior (SI) and left-right (LR) directions, respectively. Corresponding 95% limits of agreement (LOA) were ±4.3, ±4.7 and ±2.1 mm around the mean. Mean (±SD) differences between Calypso and kV imaging were −0.2 ± 0.6, 0.1 ± 0.5 and −0.1 ± 0.4 mm in AP, SI and LR directions, respectively, and corresponding LOAs were ±1.3, ±1.0 and ±0.8 mm around the mean. FMs and transponders were stable: SD of intermarker and intertransponder distances was 0.5 mm. Transmitters were unstable: mean caudal transmitter shift of 1.8 ± 2.0 mm was observed. Results indicate that the localization accuracy of the Calypso is comparable to kV imaging of fiducials and the methods could be used interchangeably. The localization accuracy of the RayPilot is affected by transmitter instability and the positioning of the patient should be verified by other setup techniques. Feeding rates of Brachionus plicatilis were studied for two types of food — algae Monochrysis lutheri and baker's yeast Saccharomyces cerevisae. The main regularities of changes in filtration rate and ration were studied in small culture volumes (1 ml) for adult amictic females depending on food concentration (1, 2, 4, 8 and 16 · 106 cells · ml−1), ambient temperature (16 and 26 °C), and salinity (5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 ppt). B. plicatilis ration did not depend on the salinity, but was largely determined by temperature and food concentration. It was found that at 16 and 26 °C the dependence of the ingestion rate (ration) on food concentration differed greatly. A hypothesis was suggested to explain this phenomenon. A critical concentration of both types of food at which the increase in the rotifer ration ceased is 4 · 106 cells · ml−1. This is the minimum “background” food concentration for B. plicatilis mass cultivation. The average rations measured at the concentration of M. lutheri and S. cerevisae of 4 · 106 cells · ml−1 where 1.3 ± 0.1 and 4.8 ± 1.3 μg dry weight. · ind−1 · day−1 at 26 °C and 0.54 ± 0.1 and 1.9 μg d. w. · ind−1 · day−1 at 16 °C, respectively. The rations obtained in the laboratory were corrected for the conditions of rotifer commercial production in the open field in summer time. The correct values were 0.86 and 0.72 μg d. w. · ind−1 · day−1 for algae and yeast, respectively.  相似文献

Stimulationg of glucose oxidation by dichloroacetate (DCA) treatment is beneficial during recovery of ischemic hearts from non-diabetic rats. We therfore determined whether DCA treatment of diabetic rat hearts (in which glucose use is extremely low), increases recovery of function of hearts reperfused following ischemia. Isolated working hearts from 6 week streptozotocindiabetic rats were perfused with 11 mM [2-3H/U-14C]glucose, 1.2 mM palmitate, 20 μU/ml insulin, and subjected to 30 min of no flow ischemia followed by 60 min reperfusion. Heart function (expressed as the product of heart rate and peak systolic pressure), prior to ischemia, was depressed in diabetic hearts compared to controls (HR × PSP × 10?3 was 18.2 ± 1 and 24.3 ± 1 beats/mm Hg/min in diabetic and control hearts respectively) but recover to pre-ischemic levels following ischemia, whereas recovery of control of control hearts was significantly decreased (17.8 ± 1 and 11.9 ± 3 beats/mm Hg/min in diabetic and control hearts respectively). This enhanced recovery of diabetic rat hearts occurred even though glucose oxidation during reperfusion was significantly reduced as compared to controls (39 ± 6 and 208 ± 42 nmol/min/g dry wt, in diabetic and control hearts respectively). Glycolytic rate (3G2O production) during reperfusion were similar in diabetic and control hearts (1623 ± 359 and 2071 ± 288 nmol/min/g dry wt, respectively). If DCA (1 mM) was added at reperfusion, hearts from control animals exhibited a significant improvement in function (HR × PSP × 10? recovered to 20 ± 4 beats/mm Hg/min) that was accompanied by a 4-fold increase in glucose oxidation (from 208 ± 42 to 753 ± 111 nmol/min/g dry wt). DCA was without effect on functional recovery of diabetic rat hearts during reperfusion but did significantly increase glucose oxidation from 39 ± 6 to 179 ± 44 nmol/min/g dry wt). These data suggests that, unlike control hearts, low glucose oxidation rates are not an important factor in reperfusion recovery of previouskly ischemic diabetic rat hearts.  相似文献

Summary

Culture of the freshwater pearl mussel, Hyriopsis (Limnoscapha) myersiana, was carried out in three consecutive steps: (1) culture of glochidia larvae in artificial media, (2) rearing the early juveniles (0–120 days old) in a nursery, and (3) rearing the juveniles (120–360 days old) in an earthen pond. The percentage survival of glochidia in standard tissue culture medium (M199) supplemented with common carp plasma was 95±2.5. All surviving larvae (100%) transformed to juveniles, the duration of transformation being 8 days. The early juveniles (0–60 days old) were fed with a mixture of four selected phytoplankton species (Chlorella sp., Kirchneriella incurvata, Navicula sp. and Coccomyxa sp.). The survival rate of juveniles was 8±0.2%. The average length of these juveniles increased from 0.13±0.01 mm to 1.41±0.16 mm and the average height from 0.16±0.01 mm to 0.98±0.09 mm. Subsequently, 60–120-day juveniles were fed with one of the same four phytoplankton species or a combination of the four. Feeding the juveniles with K. incurvata resulted in the highest survival rate (65±8.32%), with an average length of 3.46±0.04 mm and an average height of 1.94±0.04 mm. Finally, the 120–360-day juveniles were cultured in an earthen pond. There were progressive changes in average weight (0.0037±0.002 g to 11.24±5.02 g), length (3.48±0.39 mm to 54.08±6.21 mm), height (1.97±0.24 mm to 25.09±2.48 mm) and width (0.98±0.06 mm to 12.28±3.21 mm) from 120 to 360 days. The average growth rates per day of these parameters were 0.0497±0.01 g, 0.2414±0.15 mm, 0.0975±0.08 mm and 0.0493±0.03 mm, respectively. H. (L.) myersiana juveniles developed the complete structural composition of the adult by 160 days, and at 360 days, gametogenesis was complete.  相似文献

This study investigated the effect of the number of meshes in the protective bag circumference on size selectivity of a demersal trawl codend. Circumferences of 50‐mesh (NMPB50) and 215‐mesh (NMPB215) protective bags rigged on the 44 mm diamond mesh codend were tested. Fishing experiments were carried out on the commercial trawler ‘Hapulo?lu’ between 20 and 27 August 2010, using a modified trawl net. Data were collected using the covered codend method and analyzed using the logistic equation with the maximum likelihood method. Mean selection curves were analyzed and compared using the between‐haul variations model. The mean L50 values of NMPB50 and NMPB215 were, respectively, 16.4 ± 0.1 mm and 16.5 ± 0.1 mm carapace length for deep‐water rose shrimp, 10.7 ± 0.1 cm and 12.2 ± 0.1 cm total length for hake, and 16.0 ± 0.1 cm and 16.7 ± 0.1 cm total length for horse mackerel. In conclusion, increasing the number of meshes around the protective bag resulted in a 14% and 4% increase in the L50 for hake and mackerel, respectively; however, these differences were not statically significant (P > 0.05).  相似文献

Microplitis mediator (Haliday) a gregarious endoparasite was recorded for the first time fromAgrotis segetum (Schiff) in Ankara, Turkey. The female parasites found their hosts by responding to the faeces of the caterpillars. An average, females laid 15.5±1.6 eggs in the bodies of their hosts. The newly laid eggs were elongated, oval in shape and 0.23±0.004 mm long and 0.07 mm wide. They hatched in 5, 4 and 3 days at 20±2°C, 25±2°C and 30±2°C respectively when maintained at 60–70% R.H. and 14∶10 light∶dark regime. At the same temperatures, the larval stage lasted for 24.9±0.6, 18.2±0.4 and 17.1±0.5 days respectively. The prepupal stage was completed in 2 days at 25±2°C, whereas the prepupal and pupal (cocoon) stage lasted 10.9±0.2, 7.0±0.1 and 6.2±0.1 days respectively at the temperatures mentioned above. The adults started mating and feeding shortly after emergence. Female parasites started laying after one day, 7–11 hours and 5–7 hours at the temperatures stated above. At these temperatures females lived for 10.8±0.2, 5.4±0.1, 4.6±0.1 days and laid on average 556, 484 and 363 eggs respectively, whereas the males survived 10.5±0.3, 4.7±0.1 and 4.4±0.1 days respectively.   相似文献

To enhance environmental complexity for singly caged pigtailed macaques (Macaca nemestrina), we designed a food puzzle to promote foraging. The puzzles, made of clear plastic tubing and loaded with peanuts in the shell, were suspended from linked chains and attached to the fronts of the cages. Animals manipulated the puzzles by reaching through a cage opening. Upon presentation of loaded puzzles, most animals attempted to remove the peanuts. More peanuts were removed within an hour after the puzzle was loaded than at any other time during the day. Young adult animals showed no sex differences in number of peanuts removed and were more proficient than middle-aged animals in removing peanuts during the first hour of testing. Middle-aged females were more proficient than middle-aged males. The food puzzle enhanced the animals' cage environment by providing a goal-oriented activity that they could control. © 1992 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

We have studied the pharmacokinetics of amiloride and its analogs. A high-performance liquid chromatographic method has been adapted for the measurement of amiloride, 5-(N-ethyl-N-isopropyl)amiloride (EIPA) and 5-(N,N-hexamethylene)amiloride (HMA) in mouse plasma, kidney, liver and tumor tissues. The method uses a C8 preparative solid-phase column, followed by separation using a reversed-phase C18 column (250×4 mm I.D., 5 μm particle size) with detection by ultraviolet absorption at 365 nm. Reversed-phase separations were performed at ambient temperature using a non-linear gradient method with two different mobile phases: mobile phase A was 100% acetonitrile while mobile phase B was 0.15 M perchloric acid at pH 2.20 (flow-rate was 1.2 ml/min). The retention times for amiloride, benzamil (used as an internal standard), EIPA and HMA are 13.4, 19.5, 21.8 and 23.5 min, respectively. The calibration curves are linear over the range of 0.1–50 μM in plasma and in tissues. The half-lives of amiloride, EIPA and HMA (and their confidence intervals) in plasma after intraperitoneal injection of drugs into mice were 68.8±0.2, 31.2±2.5 and 39.3±7.9 min, respectively. Amiloride was detected as a metabolite of EIPA but not of HMA. When EIPA was injected at a dose of 10 μg/g body weight, it was cleared rapidly from liver, but concentrations > 1 μM were sustained for at least 2 h in murine kidney and in a transplantable tumor.  相似文献

The standard procedure for assessing the breeding potential of a stallion includes the parameter total number of spermatozoa classified as morphologically normal. This study investigated sperm morphology of fresh semen in randomly chosen Estonian (E, n = 8) and Tori (T, n = 7) breed stallions with proven fertility. Two ejaculates were examined from each stallion. An aliquot from each ejaculate was fixed in 1 mL formol-saline immediately after collection and examined with phase-contrast microscope at a magnification 1000× for all types of morphological abnormalities. Furthermore smears were prepared and stained according to Williams (carbolfuchsin-eosin) for a more detailed examination of the sperm heads with light microscope at a magnification 1000×. Analysis of variance was applied to the data, and results are presented as LSmeans (± SE). One T stallion that had a disturbance in the spermatogenesis and one 22-year-old E stallion were not included in the analyses. The T stallions had on average 57.5 ± 4.1% and the E-stallions 74.4 ± 3.8% morphologically normal spermatozoa (p = 0.012). In 4 of 7 T stallions and 7 of 8 E stallions both ejaculates had >50% morphologically normal spermatozoa. There was a significant difference between breeds in mean percentage of proximal droplets (17.3 ± 2.7% and 2.9 ± 2.5% for T and E stallions, respectively; p = 0.003).  相似文献

We discuss the energetics of a cladoceran, Simocephalus vetulus at different temperatures (8.0 ± 1.0, 15.0 ± 1.0, 21.0 ± 1.0 and 28.0 ± 1.0 °C) and food (Chlamydomonas sp.) concentrations (25 × 103, 50 × 103, 75 × 103 and 100 × 103 cells ml−1). Increase in temperature accelerated ingestion and, to some extent, oxygen consumption. The study revealed a high reproduction efficiency in S. vetulus. Net growth efficiency (ECI) was higher (13.17–41.18%) in pre-adults than in adults (2.71–8.40%). The assimilated energy (A) increased with increasing food concentration at all temperatures. Assimilation efficiency (AD) decreased with increasing food concentrations. The energy used for growth (P) was nearly constant at all food levels because the egested energy increased and assimilation efficiency decreased as food concentration increased.  相似文献

Transmembrane potential (Em) and alpha-aminoisobutyric acid (AIB) transport were measured in primary monolayer cultures of rat hepatocytes obtained from unoperated control rats and from rats 12 hr following partial hepatectomy. Measurements were performed 20–24 hr after plating the cells. The capacity of both kinds of cells to concentrate AIB depended upon extracellular sodium; however, the steady-state accumulation in regenerating cells was twice that of control cells. Transmembrane potentials, recorded with glass microelectrodes, were –13 ± 0.6 mV and –27 ± 1.6 mV in control and regenerating cells, respectively. Ouabain (1 mM) depolarlized regenerating cells to –18 ± 1.0 mV, but it had no effect on control cells. The initial rates of 1 mM AIB transport into control and regenerating cells were 1.2 ± 0.1 and 3.1 ± 0.1 nanomoles/mg protein × 4 min, respectively. Ouabain (1 mM) reduced the initial rate of AIB transport into regenerating cells to 2.7 ± 0.1 nanomoles/mg protein × 4 min, but it had no effect on AIB transport into control cells. Glucagon (10?7 M) added to control cells 12 hr before measurements hyperpolarized Em to –31 ± 1.3 mV and increased AIB transport rate to 3.1 nanomoles/mg protein × 4 min. The results suggest a relationship between increases in Em and increases in AIB transport in rat hepatocytes. An electrogenic Na-K pump may be involved in both of these events.  相似文献

Endurance exercise is widely assumed to improve cardiac function in humans. This project has determined cardiac function following endurance exercise for 6 (n = 30) or 12 (n = 25) weeks in male Wistar rats (8 weeks old). The exercise protocol was 30 min/day at 0.8 km/h for 5 days/week with an endurance test on the 6th day by running at 1.2 km/h until exhaustion. Exercise endurance increased by 318% after 6 weeks and 609% after 12 weeks. Heart weight/kg body weight increased by 10.2% after 6 weeks and 24.1% after 12 weeks. Echocardiography after 12 weeks showed increases in left ventricular internal diameter in diastole (6.39 ± 0.32 to 7.90 ± 0.17 mm), systolic volume (49 ± 7 to 83 ± 11 μl) and cardiac output (75 ± 3 to 107 ± 8 ml/min) but not left wall thickness in diastole (1.74 ± 0.07 to 1.80 ± 0.06 mm). Isolated Langendorff hearts from trained rats displayed decreased left ventricular myocardial stiffness (22 ± 1.1 to 19.1 ± 0.3) and reduced purine efflux during pacing-induced workload increases. 31P-NMR spectroscopy in isolated hearts from trained rats showed decreased PCr and PCr/ATP ratios with increased creatine, AMP and ADP concentrations. We aimed to evaluate the effect of three extracellular cryoprotectants on the morphology of vitrified feline preantral follicles. Feline ovarian fragments (0.5 × 2 × 2 mm) collected from five domestic adult cats subjected to ovariohysterectomy for routine castration were vitrified with ethylene glycol (EG) 40% combined or not with sucrose (0.1 or 0.5 M), trehalose (0.1 or 0.5 M), or raffinose (0.1 M). After vitrification using the solid-surface method and warming of the tissues, cryoprotectants were washed out of the ovarian tissues, which were fixed for histological analysis. The percentages of normal follicles were similar to the control (fresh) (62.9 ± 4.1%) only for tissues exposed and cryopreserved with EG + trehalose at concentrations of 0.1 (35.8 ± 8.3%) and 0.5 M (33.4 ± 5.4%). All the other sugars decreased the percentages of morphologically normal follicles as compared to the control group and the trehalose groups. Based on the results of the present study, we recommend the use of trehalose as the extracellular cryoprotectant for the vitrification of feline ovarian tissue.  相似文献

The amount of dietary sodium intake regulates the renin angiotensin system (RAS) and blood pressure, both of which play critical roles in atherosclerosis. However, there are conflicting findings regarding the effects of dietary sodium intake on atherosclerosis. This study applied a broad range of dietary sodium concentrations to determine the concomitant effects of dietary sodium intake on the RAS, blood pressure, and atherosclerosis in mice. Eight-week-old male low-density lipoprotein receptor ?/? mice were fed a saturated fat-enriched diet containing selected sodium concentrations (Na 0.01%, 0.1%, or 2% w/w) for 12 weeks. Mice in these three groups were all hypercholesterolemic, although mice fed Na 0.01% and Na 0.1% had higher plasma cholesterol concentrations than mice fed Na 2%. Mice fed Na 0.01% had greater abundances of renal renin mRNA than those fed Na 0.1% and 2%. Plasma renin concentrations were higher in mice fed Na 0.01% (14.2±1.7 ng/ml/30 min) than those fed Na 0.1% or 2% (6.2±0.6 and 5.8±1.6 ng/ml per 30 min, respectively). However, systolic blood pressure at 12 weeks was higher in mice fed Na 2% (138±3 mm Hg) than those fed Na 0.01% and 0.1% (129±3 and 128±4 mmHg, respectively). In contrast, mice fed Na 0.01% (0.17±0.02 mm2) had larger atherosclerotic lesion areas in aortic roots than those fed Na 2% (0.09±0.01 mm2), whereas lesion areas in mice fed Na 0.1% (0.12±0.02 mm2) were intermediate between and not significantly different from those in Na 0.01% and Na 2% groups. In conclusion, while high dietary sodium intake led to higher systolic blood pressure, low dietary sodium intake augmented atherosclerosis in hypercholesterolemic mice.  相似文献

The artificial fertilization of the puffer,Takifugu chrysops (Hilgendorf), was carried out at Sajima in Yokosuka City on May 22, 1984. Hatched larvae were reared for a period of about 150 days. The spawning period seems to extend from mid to late May in the eastern part of Sagami Bay. The eggs were spherical, pale milky white and semitransparent, demersal and adhesive in nature, measuring 1.32±0.04 mm in diamter, and with a cluster of small oil-globules. The incubation period was about 162 hours at a water temperature of 17.4 to 21.8°C. During embryonic development, the only pigment cells that appeared on the embryo were the black chromatophores. The newly hatched larvae measured from 2.72 to 3.06 mm TL, averaging 2.87±0.1 mm TL, and 22–23 (9 + 13?14) myomeres. At yolk absorption, 4 days after hatching, the larvae attained 3.64–3.79 mm TL. On the 11th day, postlarvae averaged 4.69±0.24 mm TL. Larval finfolds disappeared and rudimental dorsal, anal and caudal fins were formed. There were two large clusters of melanophores, one on the back, exteding from the mid-base of the dorsal fin to the caudal peduncle region, the other along the anal fin base. The color of the body began to turn pale green to brownish-orange and spinelike scales appeared on the belly. Eighteen days after hatching (7.02±0.27 mm TL), the caudal notochord began to turn up and a “constriction” appeared on the posterior margin of the caudal fin membrane. This notch moved upwards as the notochord upturning advances. The larvae attained full fin ray counts and reached the juvenile stage at 9.1-9.5 mm TL, 24 days after hatching. Characteristic black blotches on the back and specific brownish orange body color appeared at the stage of 20 mm TL, 24 days after hatching.
