This paper investigates whether elastic fibre-like structures are present in the ventral aorta of hagfishes and lampreys. Fibres, which are morphologically similar to the elastic fibres of gnathostomatous (jawed) vertebrates, are shown to be present in the ventral aorta of the hagfish Paramyxine atami, and also, but to a lesser extent, the dorsal aorta of this species and the ventral aorta of another hagfish, Eptatretus stouti. The ‘elastic’ tissue formed irregular sheet-like aggregates, comprising well-defined amorphous material surrounded by tubular microfibrils, whose diameters ranged from 10 to 15 nm. While this tissue was most abundant in the same region of the aortae as that occupied by the elastica interna in the blood vessels of gnathostomes, it was also found deeper in the wall of these blood vessels. Although tubular microfibrils were found in the ventral aorta of the hagfish Myxine glutinosaand the lamprey Geotria australis, these were never associated with well–defined, amorphous material. This parallels the results of previous studies on Myxine glutinosaand another species of lamprey, Petromyzon marinus. Thus, the elastic fibre–like tissues found in the ventral aortae of P. atamiand E. stoutiprovide the first examples of such structures in this region in agnathan vertebrates.  相似文献

The blood supply to the interventricular septum of the heart was studied in a sample of 1634 specimens belonging to four rodent families, Cricetidae, Arvicolidae, Gliridae, and Muridae. Most specimens (n = 1604) were examined using a corrosion-cast technique, while the remaining 30 were studied by histological techniques. In 1417 cases the coronary artery pattern was normal, and the interventricular septum was fundamentally supplied by one or rarely two septal arteries arising from the right and/or left coronary arteries. In 72 specimens the right and left coronary arteries were normal, while the septal artery arose from a separate ostium in the aorta, behaving as a third coronary artery. The remaining 145 animals possessed anomalies in the origin of the coronary arteries, and the septum was also principally irrigated by a septal artery. In 5 of these 145 anomalous cases the septal artery originated from a separate ostium in the aorta. In all specimens examined a less important vascularization of the septum was established through thinner penetrating vessels originating from the right and/or left coronary arteries. Existence of one or rarely two septal arteries is the most constant feature of the coronary artery arrangement in rodents with intramyocardial coronary arteries.  相似文献

Summary Pressure records from the heart and out-flow vessels of the heart ofCrocodylus porosus resolve previously conflicting results, showing that left aortic filling via the foramen of Panizza may occur during both cardiac diastole and systole. Filling of the left aorta during diastole, identified by the asynchrony and comparative shape of pressure events in the left and right aortae, is reconciled more easily with the anatomy, which suggests that the foramen would be occluded by opening of the pocket valves at the base of the right aorta during systole. Filling during systole, indicated when pressure traces in the left and right aortae could be superimposed, was associated with lower systemic pressures, which may occur at the end of a voluntary aerobic dive or can be induced by lowering water temperature or during a long forced dive. To explain this flexibility, we propose that the foramen of Panizza is of variable calibre. The presence of a right-left shunt, in which increased right ventricular pressure leads to blood being diverted from the lungs and exiting the right ventricle via the left aorta, was found to be a frequent though not obligate correlate of voluntary aerobic dives. This contrasts with the previous concept of the shunt as a correlate of diving bradycardia. The magnitude of the shunt is difficult to assess but is likely to be relatively small. This information has allowed some new insights into the functional significance of the complex anatomy of the crocodilian heart and major blood vessels.Abbreviations bpm beats per minute - LAo left aorta (aortic) - LV left ventricle (ventricular) - PA pulmonary artery - RAo right aorta (aortic) - RV right ventricle (ventricular) - SC subclavian artery Deceased  相似文献

The dipnoan heart is only in part structurally developed to support a separated circulation in pulmonary and systemic circuits. In the present investigation biplane angiocardiography has been used to describe the extent of such a double circulation and the factors which may modify it in the African lungfish, Protopterus aethiopicus. Contrast injections in the pulmonary vein revealed a clear tendency for aerated blood returing from the lungs to be selectively dispatched to the anterior branchial arteries giving rise to the major systemic circulation. Contrast injections in the vena cava delineated the sinus venosus as a large receiving chamber for systemic venous blood. Contraction of the sinus venosus discharged blood into the right, posterior part of the partially divided atrial space. Contrast injection in the pulmonary vein showed that vessel to pass obliquely from right to left such that blood was emptied distinctly into the left side of the atrium. During contraction the atrial space tended to retain a residual volume in its anterior undivided part which minized mixing. Ventricular filling occurred through separate right and left atrio-ventricular connections. Right-left separation in most of the ventricle was maintained by the partial ventricular septum, the trabeculated, spongelike myocardium and the mode of inflow from the atria. Mixing in the anterior undivided portion of the ventricle during the ejection phase was slight due to a streamlined ejection pattern. The outflow through the bulbus cordis occurred in discrete streams which in part were structurally separated by well developed spiral folds. In the anterior bulbus segment the spiral folds are fused and make completely separate dorsal and ventral outflow tracts. The ventral bulbus channel provides blood to the three anterior branchial arteries. The second and third branchial arteries are large and represent direct shunts to the dorsal aorta. The fourth and fifth branchial arteries are gill bearing and receive blood form the dorsal bulbus channel. The most posterior epibranchial vessels give rise to the pulmonary arteries.  相似文献

Bandeiraea simplicifolia B4 isolectin (BSLB4) and polyclonal antisera against von Willebrand factor (VWF) were used to study the origin of endothelial cells and their organization into blood vessels in the postimplantation mouse embryo. Examination of BSLB4-stained whole mounted and sectioned embryos revealed intense staining of the endothelium, highlighting large vessels, capillaries, and many individual cells. Dorsal aorta formation was first obvious at E7 when many lectin-positive cells appeared in paraxial and lateral plate mesoderm. As development proceeded to E8, BSLB4-positive cells became organized into craniocaudal lines destined to become the aorta proper. At E9, BSLB4 stained all vessels of the embryo including the dorsal aorta, the intersomitic arteries, and the endocardium. VWF expression was not detected until E8 when BSLB4/VWF double-stained sections revealed the dorsal aortae as the first VWF-positive vessels, while other endothelium visible with BSLB4 remained negative for VWF immunostaining. By E12 many other vessels became VWF-positive, including the aortic arches, the intersomitic arteries, and the cardinal veins. However, many angioblasts and capillaries remained VWF-negative, reflecting the heterogeneous expression of VWF among endothelium that has been reported in adults of other species. The histochemical data reported here support the conclusions of earlier avian studies by showing distinct vascular patterns in the initial formation of vessels from isolated angioblasts (vasculogenesis), followed by the extension and organization of the initial vascular structures (angiogenesis). Moreover, our data suggest that the endothelium arises from distinct VWF-positive sources associated with the dorsal aorta, as well as VWF-negative sources associated with other vessels in the embryo.  相似文献

Administration of N,N'-bis(dichloroacetyl)-1,8-octamethylenediamine, bisdiamine, in pregnant Donryu rats on day 10 of gestation induces a high incidence of cardiovascular anomalies in fetuses. Bisdiamine administration induced aplasia of the sixth aortic arch artery, with both the right and left primitive pulmonary arteries being directly linked to the truncus, and resulting in four types of malformation of pulmonary arteries (PAs). When two primitive PAs shared a single root, the consequence was either pulmonary trunk hypoplasia, as is seen in tetralogy of Fallot, or type I persistent truncus arteriosus (PTA) as classified by Collet and Edwards. When root portions of two PAs did not fuse, either type II or type III PTA resulted. In controls, the right dorsal aorta (DA) between the right seventh intersegmental artery (IA) and the site where both DAs fuse degenerated and the left aortic arch (AA) and the right subclavian artery (SA) were formed. Bisdiamine administration induced two additional types of vascular anomalies. In one of these, the right DA between the right 4AA and the right 7IA degenerated and a left AA accompanied by an aberrant right SA resulted. In the other type, the left DA between the left 4AA and the left 7IA degenerated and a right AA accompanied by an aberrant left SA resulted. These results indicate that administration of bisdiamine induces malformation in the great blood vessels by disturbing persistency and degeneration of aortic arch arteries and DAs.  相似文献

The general macrocirculation and branchial microcirculation of the air-breathing climbing perch, Anabas testudineus, was examined by light and scanning electron microscopy of vascular corrosion replicas. The ventral aorta arises from the heart as a short vessel that immediately bifurcates into a dorsal and a ventral branch. The ventral branch distributes blood to gill arches 1 and 2, the dorsal branch to arches 3 and 4. The vascular organization of arches 1 and 2 is similar to that described for aquatic breathing teleosts. The respiratory lamellae are well developed but lack a continuous inner marginal channel. The filaments contain an extensive nutritive and interlamellar network; the latter traverses the filament between, but in register with, the inner lamellar margins. Numerous small, tortuous vessels arise from the efferent filamental and branchial arteries and anastomose with each other to form the nutrient supply for the filament, adductor muscles, and arch supportive tissues. The efferent branchial arteries of arches 1 and 2 supply the accessory air-breathing organs. Arches 3 and 4 are modified to serve primarily as large-bore shunts between the dorsal branch of the ventral aorta and the dorsal aorta. In many filaments from arches 3 and 4, the respiratory lamellae are condensed and have only 1-3 large channels. In some instances in arch 4, shunt vessels arise from the afferent branchial artery and connect directly with the efferent filamental artery. The filamental nutrient and interlamellar systems are poorly developed or absent. The respiratory and systemic pathways in Anabas are arranged in parallel. Blood flows from the ventral branch of the ventral aorta, through gill arches 1 and 2, into the accessory respiratory organs, and then returns to the heart. Blood, after entering the dorsal branch of the ventral aorta, passes through gill arches 3 and 4 and proceeds to the systemic circulation. This arrangement optimizes oxygen delivery to the tissues and minimizes intravascular pressure in the branchial and air-breathing organs. The efficiency of this system is limited by the mixing of respiratory and systemic venous blood at the heart.  相似文献

A mutual coordination of size between developing arteries and veins is essential for establishing proper connections between these vessels and, ultimately, a functional vasculature; however, the cellular and molecular regulation of this parity is not understood. Here, we demonstrate that the size of the developing dorsal aorta and cardinal vein is reciprocally balanced. Mouse embryos carrying gain-of-function Notch alleles show enlarged aortae and underdeveloped cardinal veins, whereas those with loss-of-function mutations show small aortae and large cardinal veins. Notch does not affect the overall number of endothelial cells but balances the proportion of arterial to venous endothelial cells, thereby modulating the relative sizes of both vessel types. Loss of ephrin B2 or its receptor EphB4 also leads to enlarged aortae and underdeveloped cardinal veins; however, endothelial cells with venous identity are mislocalized in the aorta, suggesting that ephrin B2/EphB4 signaling functions distinctly from Notch by sorting arterial and venous endothelial cells into their respective vessels. Our findings provide mechanistic insight into the processes underlying artery and vein size equilibration during angiogenesis.  相似文献

The effects of vasoactive agonists on systemic blood vessels were examined with respect to anatomical location and gravity acclimation in the semi-arboreal snake, Elaphe Obsoleta. Major blood vessels were reactive to putative neurotransmitters, hormones or local factors in vessel specific patterns. Catecholamines, adenosine triphosphate, histamine and high potassium (80 mM) stimulated significantly greater tension per unit vessel mass in posterior than anterior arteries. Anterior vessels were significantly more sensitive to catecholamines than midbody and posterior vessels. Angiotensin II stimulated significantly greater tension in carotid artery than in midbody and posterior dorsal aorta. Arginine vasotocin strongly contracted the left and right aortic arches and anterior dorsal aorta. Veins were strongly contracted by catecholamines, high potassium and angiotensin II, but less so by adenosine triphosphate, arginine vasotocin and histamine. Precontracted vessels were relaxed by acetylcholine and sodium nitroprusside, but not by atrial natriuretic peptide or bradykinin. Chronic exposure of snakes to intermittent hypergravity stress (+1.5 Gz at tail) did not affect the majority of vessel responses. These data demonstrate that in vitro tension correlates with known patterns of sympathetic innervation and suggest that catecholamines, as well as other agonists, are important in mediating vascular responses to gravitational stresses in snakes.Abbreviations ACH acetylcholine - ADA anterior dorsal aorta - ANG II salmon asn1-val5-angiotensin II - ANP rat ile26-atrial natriuretic peptide - ATP adenosine triphosphate - AVT arginine vasotocin - BK human bradykinin - BL total body length - CA carotid artery - CONT control - EC 50 effective concentration producing 50% maximal response - EPI epinephrine - + G z earth's gravity force - HI-G high gravity acclimation - HI K + 80 mM high potassium - JV jugular vein - LAA left aortic arch - MDA midbody dorsal aorta - MPV midbody portal vein - MS Mackenzie's solution - NEPI norepinephrine - pD 2 log EC50 - PDA posterior dorsal aorta - PPV posterior portal vein - RAA right aortic arch - SNP sodium nitroprusside  相似文献

The article claims that contractions of the cardiac left ventricle produce a whirling (turbulent) movement of blood that is maintained in the aorta. In the walls of large and small arteries, as well as in the arteriolar walls, myocytes have a spiral arrangement. Their contraction maintains the turbulent blood stream in the vessels with a small diameter, in spite of the fact that the Reinolds' number for them is rather small. The author considers that while making a mathematical analysis of the blood flowing in the arteries, it is necessary to take into account that the walls of the arterial vessels actively influence the blood stream.  相似文献

The development of the embryonic vasculature is examined here using a monoclonal antibody, QH-1, capable of labelling the presumptive endothelial cells of Japanese quail embryos. Antibody labelling is first seen within the embryo proper at the 1-somite stage. Scattered labelling of single cells appears ventral to the somites and at the lateral edges of the anterior intestinal portal. The dorsal aorta soon forms a continuous cord at the ventrolateral edge of the somites and continues into the head to fuse with the ventral aorta forming the first aortic arch by the 6-somite stage. The rudiments of the endocardium fuse at the midline above the anterior intestinal portal by the 3-somite stage and the ventral aorta extends craniad. Intersomitic arteries begin to sprout off of the dorsal aorta at the 7-somite stage. The posterior cardinal vein forms from single cells which segregate from somatic mesoderm at the 7-somite stage to form a loose plexus which moves mediad and wraps around the developing Wolffian duct in later stages. These studies suggest two modes of origin of embryonic blood vessels. The dorsal aortae and cardinal veins apparently arise in situ by the local segregation of presumptive endothelial cells from the mesoderm. The intersomitic arteries, vertebral arteries and cephalic vasculature arise by sprouts from these early vessel rudiments. There also seems to be some cell migration in the morphogenesis of endocardium, ventral aorta and aortic arches. The extent of presumptive endothelial migration in these cases, however, needs to be clarified by microsurgical intervention.  相似文献

The pattern recognition procedure of discriminant analysis has been used to characterize the trace metal profiles created by the concentrations of 8 trace metals in 15 anatomic sites of beef heart tissue. Metals analyzed were copper, tin, lead, molybdenum, strontium, cesium, barium, and aluminum. Anatomic sites sampled included main pulmonary artery, aorta, mitral and tricuspid valves, left and right coronary arteries, os cordis, right atrium, left atrial appendage, crista supraventricularis, left bundle branch, free wall of the right and left ventricles, interventricular septum, and papillary muscle of the left ventricle. The striking features of the data were: (1) All specimens of the mitral valve, tricuspid valve, and os cordis were ambiguously described by their trace metal profiles; (2) the four blood vessels constituted two groups of two tissues each (aorta, main pulmonary artery; left and right coronary arteries); (3) tissues derived from ordinary and specialized myocardium were quite different from blood vessels, heart valves and os cordis. Using these profiles, 85% of the specimens analyzed were correctly classified by discriminant analysis with respect to their anatomic origin.  相似文献

We present data on the haemolymph vascular system (HVS) in four representatives of the major amphipod lineages Gammaridea, Hyperiidea and Caprellidea based on corrosion casting and three‐dimensional reconstructions of histological semi‐thin sections. In all these species the HVS comprises a dorsal pulsatile heart, which is continued in the body axis by the anterior and posterior aortae. The heart is equipped with three pairs of incurrent ostia. The number of cardiac arteries that lead off the heart varies among species: in the studied Gammaridea four pairs occur, in Hyperia galba only the three posterior pairs of cardiac arteries occur, while in Caprella mutica cardiac arteries are absent. In all the studied species the posterior aorta leads as a simple tube into the pleon attached to the dorsal diaphragm. The anterior aorta runs from its origin in the anterior part of the second thoracic segment into the cephalothorax. Both pairs of antennae have an arterial supply off the anterior aorta. An overview of previously studied species including our present findings shows the amphipod HVS to be relatively uniform and the gammarid form is discussed as being closest to the ground pattern of Amphipoda.  相似文献

We measured the contribution of aortic, internal mammary, and intercostal arteries to the blood flow to the costal and crural segments of the diaphragm and other respiratory muscles in seven dogs breathing against a fixed inspiratory elastic load. We used radiolabeled microspheres to measure the blood flow with control circulation, occlusion of the aorta distal to the left subclavian artery, combined occlusion of the aorta and both internal mammary arteries, and occlusion of internal mammary arteries alone. With occlusion of the aorta distal to the left subclavian artery, blood flow to the crural diaphragm decreased from 40.3 to 23.5 ml . min-1 X 100 g-1, whereas costal flow did not change significantly (from 41.7 to 38.1 ml . min-1 . 100 g-1). Blood flows to the sternomastoid and scalene muscles (above the occlusion) increased by 200 and 340%, respectively, whereas flows to the other respiratory muscles did not change significantly. Blood flows to organs above the occlusion either remained unchanged or increased, whereas flows to those below the occlusion all decreased. When the internal mammary artery was also occluded, flows to the crural segment decreased further to 12.1 and costal flow decreased to 20.4 ml X min-1 X 100 g-1. Internal mammary arterial occlusion alone in two dogs had no effect on diaphragmatic flow. In conclusion, intercostal collateral vessels are capable of supplying a significant proportion of blood flow to both segments of the diaphragm but the costal segment is better served than the crural segment.  相似文献

The ductus arteriosi (DA) are embryonic blood vessels found in amniotic vertebrates that shunt blood away from the pulmonary artery and lungs and toward the aorta. Here, we examine changes in morphology of the right and left DA (LDA), and right and left aorta (LAo) from embryonic and hatchling alligators. The developing alligator has two‐patent DA that join the right and LAo. Both DA exhibit a muscular phenotype composed of an internal smooth muscle layer (2–4 cells thick). At hatching, the lumen diameter of both DA decreases as the vessels begin to close within the first 12 h of posthatch life. Between day 1 and day 12 posthatching, the vessel becomes fully occluded with endothelial and smooth muscle cells filling the lumen. A number of DA from hatchlings contained blood clots along their length. The lumen of the full term alligator DA is reduced in comparison with the full term chicken DA. The developing alligator embryo has an additional right‐to‐left shunt pathway in the LAo arising from the right ventricle. The embryonic LAo diameter is twice the diameter of either the right DA or LDA, providing a lower resistance pathway for blood leaving the right ventricle. On the basis of these findings, we propose that the paired DA of the embryonic alligator have a reduced role in the embryonic right‐to‐left shunt of blood from the right ventricle when compared with the avian DA. We are using a monoclonal antibody, QH-1, as a label for angioblasts in quail embryos to study vascular development. Our previous experiments showed that major embryonic blood vessels, such as the dorsal aortae and posterior cardinal veins, develop from angioblasts of mesodermal origin that appear in the body of the embryo proper (Coffin and Poole: Development, 102:735-748, '88). We theorized that there are two separate processes for blood vessel development that occur in quail embryos. One mechanism termed "vasculogenesis" forms blood vessels in place by the aggregation of angioblasts into a cord. The other mechanism, termed "angiogenesis," is the formation of new vessels by sprouting of capillaries from existing vessels. Here we report the results of microsurgical transplantation experiments designed to determine the extent of cell migration taking place during blood vessel formation. Comparison of the chimeras to normal embryos suggests that the vascular pattern develops, in part, from the normally restricted points of entry of angioblasts into the head from the ventral and dorsal aortae. Transplantations of quail mesoderm (1-15 somite stage) into the head of 5-15 somite chick hosts resulted in extensive sprouting and in migration of single and small groups of angioblasts away from the graft sites. Transplantations into the trunk resulted in incorporation of the graft into the normal vascular pattern of the host. Lateral plate mesoderm was incorporated into the dorsal aortae and individual sprouts grew between somites and along the neural tube to contribute to the intersomitic and vertebral arteries, respectively.  相似文献

Arterial adaptations to altered blood flow   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Arterial remodeling in response to altered blood flow is believed to be critical to vascular adaptations to developmental, physiological, pathological, and therapeutically induced changes in blood flow. To assess this remodeling, we used left-to-right carotid anastomosis to increase blood flow in the right common carotid arteries of adult rabbits by 60%. After 2 months, these vessels exhibited no compensatory enlargement. In contrast, the same procedure performed in 5- to 6-week-old weanling rabbits resulted in accelerated growth of the vessels: diameters exceeded those of control arteries by 19% after 2 months. Common carotid arteries in adult rabbits remodeled to produce a diameter reduced by 23% when blood flow was reduced by 63% by external carotid ligation. This adaptation restored shear stress exerted on the vessel wall to control levels. The reduced diameter was not reversed when the vessels were maximally dilated with nitroprusside, adenosine, and forskolin; however, normal diameters were restored within 1 week when normal blood flows were reestablished. Thus, the adult arteries did not respond to increased blood flow produced by the anastomosis, but this procedure did reverse adaptations to decreased flow. In contrast, immature arteries were responsive to this increase in blood flow, even in the absence of prior flow modulation.  相似文献

The branching pattern of the coronary arteries and veins is asymmetric, i.e., many small vessels branch off of a large trunk such that the two daughter vessels at a bifurcation are of unequal diameters and lengths. One important implication of the geometric vascular asymmetry is the dispersion of blood flow at a bifurcation, which leads to large spatial heterogeneity of myocardial blood flow. To document the asymmetric branching pattern of the coronary vessels, we computed an asymmetry ratio for the diameters and lengths of all vessels, defined as the ratio of the daughter diameters and lengths, respectively. Previous data from silicone elastomer cast of the entire coronary vasculature including arteries, arterioles, venules, and veins were analyzed. Data on smaller vessels were obtained from histological specimens by optical sectioning, whereas data on larger vessels were obtained from vascular casts. Asymmetry ratios for vascular areas, volumes, resistances, and flows of the various daughter vessels were computed from the asymmetry ratios of diameters and lengths for every order of mother vessel. The results show that the largest orders of arterial and venous vessels are most asymmetric and the degree of asymmetry decreases toward the smaller vessels. Furthermore, the diameter asymmetry at a bifurcation is significantly larger for the coronary veins (1.7-6.8 for sinus veins) than the corresponding arteries (1.5-5.8 for left anterior descending coronary artery) for orders 2-10, respectively. The reported diameter asymmetry at a bifurcation leads to significant heterogeneity of blood flow at a bifurcation. Hence, the present data quantify the dispersion of blood flow at a bifurcation and are essential for understanding flow heterogeneity in the coronary circulation.  相似文献
