An encrusting colonial hydroid can be regarded as a network of polyps or ‘mouths’ connected by tube-like stolons. The success of the colony crucially depends on putting these mouths where the available food is. Feeding-related perturbations may provide important signals in this regard. After feeding, polyps contract regularly, dispersing food throughout the colony via the gastrovascular fluid. Mitochondrion-rich epitheliomuscular cells concentrated near polyp-stolon junctions likely drive these contractions. Putatively, the redox state of these cells may influence colony-level form. For instance, the metabolic demand associated with feeding-related contractions results in mitochondria that have relatively oxidized electron carriers and produce lesser amounts of reactive oxygen species (ROS). ROS or other redox-sensitive molecules emitted from polyp-stolon junctions into the gastrovascular fluid may provide stolons with signals influencing elongation, branching, and regression. Treatments of colonies with anti-oxidants cause peripheral stolon tips to rapidly regress. This regression appears to be an active process involving a flux of locally produced peroxides and cell and tissue death. At the same time, polyps and stolon tips in the center of treated colonies remain healthy. ‘Sheet-like’ growth of short, branched stolons ensues. Signals that inhibit the outward growth of stolons may lead by default to the concentrated growth of stolons and polyps in food-rich areas. ROS may mediate signaling mechanisms involving nitric oxide, programmed cell death, a variety of redox-regulated proteins, or all of these.  相似文献

The biochemical system responsible for the bioluminescent flashing in a number of coelenterates has been isolated and partially characterized. The system involves a molecule termed a “photoprotein,” which emits a brief (1 second) flash of light when reacted with calcium. A chelating agent such as EDTA must be used at all times to maintain the activity intact. The activity of reacted photoprotein is not restored if the calcium is removed by EDTA.  相似文献

Growth and shaping in colonial hydroids (Hydrozoa, Cnidaria) are realized due to the functioning of special colony elements, growing tips located at the terminuses of branched colony body. Unlike in plants, the growing tips of colonial hydroids are sites of active cell movements related to morphogenesis and lacking proliferation. The activity of hydroid growing tips is expressed as growth pulsations: cyclic repetitions of their apex extensions and retractions. The parameters of growth pulsations are species specific and related to the shape of a forming element. Here, the succession of cell movements and changes in mutual arrangement within the growing tip are described in detail at all pulsation phases. The role of the inner cell layer in the tip activity was demonstrated for the first time. Relationships between the growing tip parameters, length and diameter, and pulsations are discussed. A scheme is proposed for cyclic processes in both epithelial layers. An explanation is provided for the two-step mode of growth pulsations with relative independence of the main phases. It was proposed that successive activities of the tip ecto- and endoderm serve as driving forces provided there is a hard outer skeleton. This scheme makes it possible to explain some patterns of growth and morphogenesis in colonial hydroids, such as gradually increasing growth rate of a new tip and its maximum growth rate, differences in the parameters of growth pulsations between shoot and stolon tips, shoot base inclination towards the stolon tip, etc., and provides a basis for further improvement of the model of morphogenesis in hydroids.  相似文献

Stolonic growth has been compared among several genera of calyptoblastic (Campanularia flexuosa, C. calceolifera, Gonothyraea and Sertularia) and gymnoblastic (Pennaria, Bougainvillia, Eudendrium and Cordylophora) hydroids with respect to such features as the (1) complexity and uniformity of the tip movements, (2) constancy of growth cycle duration, (3) variability in growth among cycles, (4) growth rate, and (5) variability of retractions among cycles. The “growth cycle,” previously described in C. flexuosa, is the basis for elongation in all species observed. Its pattern is indistinguishable between the Campanularia species; however, at the generic level the tip movements show peculiarities which delineate each genus from all others. In addition, the movements in all calyptoblasts are uniform from cycle to cycle and comparatively simple, whereas those of the gymnoblasts are complicated by the variable appearance of one or more secondary forward thrusts between crests. A dichotomy is seen between the calyptoblasts and most gymnoblasts in other respects as well. Cycle time is very predictable and cycle-to-cycle variability in growth is relatively narrow in all calyptoblasts. However, in most gymnoblasts both features are much more loosely regulated: only Pennaria shows some degree of control to its timing mechanism, and only in Bougainvillia and Eudendrium does the uniformity of growth per cycle reach the calyptoblast level. On the premise that calyptoblasts are evolutionarily the more advanced group, simplicity and regularity of growth movements are concluded to be the evolved, and complexity and variability the primitive, conditions. On this basis the evolutionary relations among the four gymnoblasts, as deduced from their stolonic growth behavior alone, are consistent in many but not all respects with those interpreted from morphological considerations.  相似文献

The features of the vertical distribution of hydroids on various types of wharves in the northwest part of the Sea of Japan were studied. It was shown that the highest values of biomass of the common species of hydroids Obelia longissima and Bougainvillia ramosa were at wharf sites below the zone of varying submergence up to a depth of 1 m. The spatial variability of hydroid abundance is discussed in relation to the local specifics of their environment and the character of formation and the structure of the fouling community.  相似文献

A new mechanism for the functioning of mitochondrial transhydrogenase has been proposed. This mechanism makes it possible, without additional postulates, to explain the generation of delta muH+ of different signs in the forward and reverse transhydrogenase reactions and why this generation is not accompanied by the membrane uncoupling. It is suggested that the reduced nicotinamide rings of NADH and NADPH participate in a relay transfer of H+ ions across the membrane, while the oxidized nicotinamide rings of NAD+ and NADP+ block the H+-transporting paths in the transhydrogenase.  相似文献

Scaling up from local, short-term experiments to larger-area and longer-term ones is crucial to address the role of scale in ecology. Few studies, however, examined large-scale spatial variability in the distribution and abundance of marine organisms, with rare attempts to directly compare spatial variation at local (centimetres-metres) vs. regional (1000's of kilometres) scale. Here, we used a hierarchical design to describe the spatial distribution of the hydroids epiphitic of the brown alga Cystoseira amentacea, a habitat-forming species that provides a continuous, extensive settling substrate at regional scale along the rocky coasts in the Mediterranean Sea. This continuity provides the potential to deal with scale-related variability, increasing area of investigation without adding differences deriving from habitat heterogeneity or changes in topographic complexity. Hydroids were selected for their abundance and for their life cycle features (rapid growth, small body size, early sexual or asexual reproduction and short life span), allowing rapid responses to changes in environmental conditions. The aim of this study was to analyse whether the structure of hydroid assemblages living on C. amentacea had a consistent pattern of variation among three portions of the algal thallus (i.e., basal, middle, and distal) across a spectrum of scales and whether having or not a pelagic stage could exert a significant influence on the distribution patterns of the species. A total of 32 species were identified. Multivariate analyses showed that hydroid colonization of Cystoseira occurs differently along each thallus, with patterns of variation in the structure of assemblages differing at an even smaller spatial scale than that of single plants. However, such differences varied from patch to patch. Among the 14 species identified as “important” to define the hydroid assemblage inhabiting Cystoseira, only one (Clytia hemisphaerica) has free medusae, the other species reproducing by fixed gonophores or by short-lived medusoids. Univariate analysis showed significant differences among portions of thalli in terms of spatial variability at the various scales investigated, thus suggesting that patterns of multivariate variation along the three portions of thalli might vary across scale. Overall, our results suggest that patterns of distribution of hydroids along C. amentacea thalli significantly vary across spatial scales but that the observed differences can be hardly interpreted on the basis of life-cycle patterns.  相似文献

In this study, we investigated the influence of serotonin on the development and functioning of T- and B-cell-mediated immunity during ontogenesis using the pharmacological model of serotonin depletion in rat fetuses. It has been demonstrated that prenatal serotonin deficiency resulted in a decrease in thymus and spleen weights, changes in their cellular composition, and long-lasting disturbances in cell-mediated and humoral immunity in postnatal ontogenesis. The data obtained suggest that serotonin may be considered a morphogenic factor in development of the immune system.  相似文献

Changes in the rate of respiration and functioning of the ATP-dependent potassium channel in liver and heart mitochondria of one-, three-, eight-, and 24-month-old Wistar male rats have been investigated. It was shown that the activity of the channel in the mitochondria of both tissues in 24-month-old animals decreases more than three times, and the content of potassium, 1.5–2 times compared with young one-month-old rats. The changes occur against the background of age-related decrease of energy supply in mitochondria, the respiratory complex-I undergoing the greatest changes upon aging. The decrease of channel activity may be the result of changes in channel sensitivity to modulators and a decrease in the expression of mitochondrial K+-transporting channel-protein with a molecular mass of 5.5 kDa upon aging found in this work. As a result, the functioning of not only the mitoKATP but also the whole mitochondrial potassium cycle is impaired.  相似文献

The colonial ascidian Didemnum candidum (Savigny) is more abundant at shallow depths on floating docks than at greater depths along pilings in Pearl Harbor, Oahu, Hawaii. To compare the effects of selective settlement and postsettlement mortality on adult distribution, I determined if settlement was nonrandom relative to depth, if differences in adult abundance were responsible for the depth distribution of settlement, and if juvenile mortality varied with depth. A plankton pump was used to measure variation in larval abundance with depth. Acrylic settling plates were suspended at different depths and sampled nondestructively to measure settlement intensity and juvenile mortality. Settlement and mortality of the didemnid ascidians Diplosoma listerianum Milne-Edwards and Diplosoma sp. were also measured in the field and compared to that of D. candidum. Settlement of D. candidum was indeed nonrandom over depth. Both planktonic larvae and settled juvenils were more numerous at 0.5 than 3 or m. Settlement intensity on vertical plates was greatest within 1–2 cm of the water surface in the laboratory and within 2–3 cm in the field. Directly adjacent to the floating dock, where adults were equally abundant, settlement on horizontal plates was greater at shallow depths, suggesting directed movement of larvae upward. However, the ratio of settled juveniles to planktonic larvae (number of settlers: number of larvae) did not significantly differ with depth, suggesting that larvae were not more likely to settle at a particular depth. Settlement of the Diplosoma species was also heaviest near the surface. Juvenile mortality was greater at 0.5 than at 3 or 6 m for both D. candidum and the Diplosoma species. Experimental settlement showed that mortality, per se, of D. candidum was independent of depth. Rather, mortality was density-dependent, and the higher mortality near the surface was due to the greater number of larvae settling there. At this location, nonrandom settlement appears to determine the adult distribution of D. candidum, despite greater juvenile mortality at shallow depths. The pattern of settlement over depth is largely determined by adult proximity, rather than active larval behavior.  相似文献

The problem of the general introduction of the principles of the pre-epidemic diagnostics of HIV infection was discussed. These principles should be based on the observation of "model" infections (viral hepatitides B, C, D), multipurpose serological monitoring and sociological methods aimed at obtaining the necessary information. The suggestion that the age and sexual structure of HIV-infected patients would be determined by the route of HIV transmission, prevailing on a given territory, including into infection process adolescents and young women and men was made.  相似文献
