The reproductive biology of Zeyheria montana was studied through field observations of flower visitors and floral events, controlled manual pollinations, and observations of pollen tube growth and ovule penetration by fluorescence microscopy. Analysis of secretory areas of the nectar chamber was made by flower dissections and histology of serial sections. The flower lasted 6–8 days, but pollen exposure and stigma receptivity occurred only up to the end of the first and second days, respectively. Pollination was effected by several species of hummingbirds, especially Colibri serrirostris. The flowers present a rudimentary, non-functional disc, and secretion of nectar is performed by corolla-borne glandular trichomes. Only hand cross-pollinated and natural-pollinated flowers set fruits. Artificially self-pollinated and non-pollinated flowers dried off after anthesis without presenting any swelling of the ovary. Almost all the ovules in selfed and crossed pistils were penetrated 96 h after pollination. However, a delay in ovule penetration in self-pollinated pistils was verified, which indicates the occurrence of late-acting self-incompatibility.We are grateful to Fundo de Apoio ao Ensino e à Pesquisa (UNICAMP) for financial support, and Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq) for the fellowship granted to the first author (this work is part of a Ph.D. thesis presented to UNICAMP, Campinas, SP, Brazil).  相似文献

To understand the molecular mechanism of ovule development, a MADS box gene,HoMADS 1, has been isolated from the ovule tissues of Hyacinthus. Sequence comparison showed that HoMADS 1 is highly homologous to both class C and D genes. Furthermore, phylogenetic analysis suggests that HoMADS 1 is most likely a class D MADS box gene. RNA hybridization revealed that HoMADS 1 was exclusively expressed in the ovules. Over-expressing HoMADS 1 in transgenic Arabidopsis plants produced ectopic carpelloid structures, including ovules, indicating that HoMADS 1 is involved in the determination of carpel and ovule identities. Interestingly, during in vitro flowering, no HoMADS 1 mRNA was detected in the floral tissues at high level hormones in the media. However, HoMADS 1 mRNA accumulated in the floral tissues when the regenerated flowers were transferred to the media containing low level hormones which could induce in vitro ovule formation. Our data suggest that the induction of HoMADS 1 by plant hormones may play important roles during ovule initiation and development in the regenerated flower. Whether HoMADS 1 expression is also regulated by cytokinin and auxin during ovule development in planta remains to be investigated.  相似文献

The correlation between pollen-ovule (P/O) ratio and breeding system has generally been analysed with respect either to pollination efficiency, or in terms of sex allocation theory. Pollen/ovule ratios were measured in nine species of Araceae belonging to two genera with bisexual flowers (Anaphyllopsis, Monstera) and three genera with unisexual flowers (Dieffenbachia, Philodendron, Montrichardia). The family Araceae with its unique inflorescence morphology allows the analysis of variations of the P/O ratio with respect to two basal morpho-functional pollination units: the flower or the inflorescence. We found a relationship between the value of the P/O ratio and the breeding system that is partially different from Cruden's results (1977). Some facultative xenogamous species have a higher P/O than the obligatory xenogamous species. A link was found between the P/O and the type of inflorescence, the floral cycle, and the mode of growth.  相似文献

Summary Earlier studies showed that under natural conditions foreign pollen receipt is correlated with loss of seed set in populations of P. viscosum. Here, we report on experimental pollinations using foreign pollen from two co-flowering species that share pollinators with P. viscosum. Experiments were designed to ascertain whether improper pollen transfer causes reduced seed set under controlled conditions and, if so, to determine the stage at which interference occurs. In flowers pre-treated by pollination with either Mertensia or Castilleja pollen, adherence of subsequently deposited conspecific pollen grains was unaffected. However, conspecific grains had significantly lower germination and ovule fertilization success in flowers receiving foreign pollen than in controls. These results suggest that pollinator infidelity in high alpine plant communities can reduce female reproductive success of P. viscosum by inhibiting the performance of conspecific pollen grains. Negative effects of Mertensia and Castilleja pollen were comparable despite large interspecific differences in pollen grain morphology. Accordingly, susceptibility to foreign pollen interference appears to be an intrinsic property of P. viscosum that is not dependent on the unique structural properties of pollen produced by competitive species.  相似文献

The path of the pollen tube has been examined in pistachio (Pistacia vera), a chalazogamous species where the pollen tube penetrate the ovule via the chalaza. Special attention was paid to the way the pollen tube gains access to the ovule. A single anatropous ovule with a big funiculus occupies the entire ovary cavity. At anthesis, a physical gap exists between the ovule and the base of the style. However, upon pollen tube arrival a protuberance, the ponticulus, develops in the uppermost area of the funiculus between the style and ovule. This structure appears to facilitate access to the ovule by the pollen tube. The pollen tube penetrates the ovule via this ponticulus. Upon penetration, callose develops in the ponticulus cells surrounding the pollen tube. After pollen tube passage, the upper layer of the ponticulus lignifies and isolates the ovule from the style. This separation is further enlarged 2 weeks later when the ovary starts to develop without expansion of the ovule and a large gap develops separating the ovule from the style. Except for the induction of callose formation by the pollen tube in the funiculus, this process is independent of pollination and appears to be developmentally regulated since it occurs in the same way and at the same time in pollinated and unpollinated flowers. The ponticulus, although by a different mechanism, appears to be playing the role of an obturator regulating access of the pollen tube to the ovule. Furthermore, this access is restricted to a particular time during the development of the ovule.  相似文献

Floral development and floral phyllotaxis in species of Adonis, Callianthemum, and Trollius (Ranunculaceae) were studied with scanning electron microscopy. The floral organs are initiated in spiral sequence and the flowers have spiral phyllotaxis. The sepal primordia are broad, crescent-shaped, and truncate, but those of petals, stamens, and carpels are rather hemispherical. A relatively long plastochron appears to be present between the last sepal and the first petal as compared with the short and equal plastochrones of all subsequent floral organs. Maturation of the stamens within the androecium appears to be centripetal. The carpels have a short ascidiate zone. Placentation is uniformly lateral, even in Adonis and Callianthemum, which have only one fertile ovule per carpel (versus median in other genera of Ranunculoideae with a single fertile ovule). In Adonis and Callianthemum at the tip of the carpel the ventral slit is gaping and the stigma is broadly exposed, whereas in Trollius the stigma is narrower and more pronouncedly decurrent along the ventral slit. The petals in Callianthemum and Trollius are more conspicuously delayed in development than those in Adonis as compared with sepals and stamens. A short carpel stipe is formed early in Callianthemum but later in Adonis and Trollius. In Trollius farreri (commonly having only five carpels in contrast to other species of Trollius) the carpels form a single (spiral) series. Thus floral development is similar in all three genera and, at a lower level, Adonis and Callianthemum are especially close but have different autapomorphies, which reflects the current classification of the genera.  相似文献

Two new species of legume, Caesalpinia celendiniana and Mimosa lamolina and one new variety, Caesalpinia pluviosa var. maraniona, from the inter-Andean Río Mara?ón Valley in northern Perú are described and illustrated. These add to the already impressive tally of endemics known from the seasonally dry tropical forests of the Río Mara?ón Valley, which apparently far exceeds the endemic plant diversity from other nearby inter-Andean dry valleys in Perú and southern Ecuador.  相似文献

The purpose of this study is to examine floral trait variation between fourCyclamen species that show variation in their ability to reproduce in the absence of pollinators and in levels of inbreeding. Pollen and ovule production, pollen/ovule ratio, pollen volume, petal length and width, diameter of the corolla mouth, pistil and stamen length, and stigma-anther separation varied significantly between the four study species. Flower, pollen and ovule production, pollen volume and corolla size were generally highest inC. hederifolium, the species with the lowest level of inbreeding (mean Fis = 0.329), intermediate in both species with relatively high levels of pollinator-mediated inbreeding,C. repandum (mean Fis = 0.658) andC. creticum (mean Fis = 0.748), and lowest in the highly inbredC. balearicum (mean Fis = 0.930). The two species with the most different inbreeding coefficients,C. hederifolium andC. balearicum, had lower pollen-ovule ratios and shorter longevities of stigma receptivity and pollen viability thanC. creticum andC. repandum. These patterns of variation in floral traits are discussed in relation to the relatedness, pollination ecology and levels of inbreeding of the four species.  相似文献

A comparative investigation was carried out on the ovule and seed development of three mountain species ofGentianaceae, the perennial speciesGentiana pyrenaica, and the two short-lived monocarpic speciesGentianella caucasea andG. germanica. In all three species most embryological characters conform to those generally found in the family of theGentianaceae. In some features, however,G. pyrenaica and the twoGentianella species differ from each other. InG. pyrenaica the ovule is anatropous, the integument 8–10 layered and the three reduced antipodals degenerate soon after fertilization. In contrast,G. caucasea andG. germanica form a hemitropous ovule, a 4–5 layered integument and up to 16 antipodal cells by secondary multiplication. All three species exhibit differences in synchronization between embryogenesis and endosperm development. Functional relations between the antipodal structure and the dynamics of seed development of the investigated species are postulated.  相似文献

Various aspects of the reproductive biology of the perennial hermaphroditeFrangula alnus Mill. were studied in two populations located in the province of Cádiz, southern Spain. Flowering extends from the second week of May to early July. The small, whitegreenish, entomophilous flowers are incompletely protandrous and last 8–10 days, but pollen transfer takes place only on days 1–3. A very weak, pleasant odour along with nectar and pollen attract over 45 insect species, of which 21 are probable pollinators. These are mainlyDiptera but also includeHymenoptera and the unusual (as flower visitors)Mecoptera. Reproduction is exclusively sexual and strictly xenogamous, with pollen transfer depending solely on insect vectors. Although flower morphology and individual flower phenology do not fully prevent self-pollination, and geitonogamy can easily take place, the level of autogamy was negligible. Therefore, some self-incompatibility mechanism is operative in this species. Only 2.8% of open-pollinated flowers set fruit. At the flower level, fruit initiation was apparently limited by availability of cross-pollen, which in turn seemed influenced by the structure of the population. The seed/ovule ratio in ripe fruits was ca. 50%. Predispersal (maternal) reproductive success (percent ovules becoming filled seeds) was 1.42%. For mature individuals this corresponded to ca. 430 to 1560 potential offspring per year.  相似文献

Summary The impact of ovule number on seed set calculations for self-incompatible (SI) species was investigated. Diploid Chrysanthemum was chosen for this study because accurate counts of the potential number of ovules could be made. Individuals in populations of C. carinatum, C. coronarium, C. c. subsp. spatiosum, and C. segetum were crossed in complete diallels. All species exhibited similar results. Therefore, only the diallel data from C. coronarium subsp. spatiosum were presented. The seed set data with and without ovule counts were processed by SIGMAS, a computer program designed to analyze SI data. Incorporation of the actual number of ovules into seed set diallels provided the most realistic representation of values for self-incompatibility studies. Data derived from equations excluding ovule counts might lead to inaccurate genetic interpretations. Ovule counts were significant between and within genotypes for self (disc and ray florets), but not cross (ray florets only) pollinations. The disc florets in self-pollinations were found to be responsible for increasing the variability in ovule number. The statistics indicate that the disc and ray florets composed two distinct populations. At the diploid level with a single daisy flower type, the disc floret numbers were variable, whereas ray florets were relatively static. This was not the case with polyploid chrysanthemums, where both ovule populations were dynamic and interactive. The conservative nature of percent pseudo-self-compatibility (%PSC) deems it necessary to obtain an accurate measure of female fertility. Values for this could be obtained using a bulk pollination or a tester with unmatched S alleles.Scientific Journal Series paper no. 15,880 of the Minnesota Agricultural Experiment Station.  相似文献

Fourteen common southern Spanish species in theCistaceae were examined for quantitative variations in floral traits. These included the diameter of the corolla, number and size of anthers, number of ovules, and the size and shape of the gynoecium. The variables were in most instances positively correlated, species with larger flowers having more and larger anthers, more ovules, etc. Shrubs were observed to possess the largest, annuals the smallest, and subshrubs medium-sized flowers. Detailed observations of flower structure and function in a shrub (Cistus salvifolius), a spring-annual (Tuberaria guttata) and a winter-annual (T. inconspicua), revealed substantial variations in the breeding system. WhileC. salvifolius (and probably most woody species in this family) presents self-incompatibility, annual species ofTuberaria are self-compatible. In the studied population,T. inconspicua plants bore only reduced, cleistogamous flowers with no sign of a corolla.T. guttata has chasmogamous flowers that can facultatively self-pollinate.  相似文献

We investigated the effect of gibberellic acid (GA3) in the fertilization of Clementine mandarin cv. ‘Clemenules’ (Citrus clementina Hort. ex Tan.), a parthenocarpic variety that produces seedless fruit due to its self-incompatible nature, but yields seedy fruits when grown under cross-pollination conditions.Experiments were conducted with on-tree ‘Clemenules’ flowers and ‘Fortune’ mandarin pollen (C. clementina Hort. ex Tan. × C. reticulata Blanco), which is sexually compatible with the former. Preanthesis treatment at −2 days after anthesis (−2 DAA) enhanced ovule abortion in both unpollinated and cross-pollinated (at +2 DAA) flowers. In the latter, the number of pollen tubes reaching the ovules was significantly reduced although pollen grains were not treated; thus, fertilization was partially avoided and seed set was reduced. When GA3 was applied at anthesis (0 DAA) at the time of pollination, ovule abortion was again enhanced, and pollen tube growth was completely arrested; thus, fertilization was prevented and seed set was impeded. When GA3 was applied 24 h after pollination (+1 DAA in flowers pollinated at anthesis), pollen tube growth was impaired but not arrested and ovule abortion was enhanced; therefore, fertilization was not prevented but impaired. We conclude that, when applied the days around anthesis, GA3 (10 mg l−1) impairs fertilization by either enhancing ovule abortion or reducing pollen tube growth, in ‘Clemenules’ flowers under cross-pollination conditions. The intensity of the response depends on the physiological flower state at the moment of treatment.  相似文献

The floral and pollination biology of three closely related species,Tricyrtis flava, T. nana andT. ohsumiensis, were comparatively investigated. The primary pollinator wasBombus diversus in all the three species observed, andAmegilla sp. also acted forT. ohsumiensis. The flowers ofT. flava andT. ohsumiensis bloom for two days and are protandrous. Thus autogramy seems to be prevented in these species when the larger bees forage on them, though geitonogamy may also occur. On the other hand,T. nana appears to be a primarily self-pollinating species. The flowers of this species open only during one day and are homogamy. The stigmata seem to receive much pollen of their own flower by the visit of bumblebees. Moreover, many flowers ofT. nana fruited without any visit of pollinators.T. nana has many features characterizing the autogamous derivatives.  相似文献

We present a survey of moth pollination in woody species of the Cerrado of Central Brazil. Although with the exception of Roupala montana (which has simple polysepalous flowers arranged in dense cymes) all moth pollinated species in this community have tubular flowers, or a pseudo-tube formed from a single folded petal in Qualea grandiflora, settling moth flowers (tube less than 15 mm) vs. hawkmoth flowers (tube more than 50 mm) are markedly different in size. Moths visit some 20 woody Cerrado species, but they are probably effective pollinators of only 13 species or ca.14% of the woody taxa studied, and even in these latter species they are often very sparse visitors. Nevertheless, it is notable that moths are pollinators for 21% of the 38 most commonly distributed woody Cerrado species. Moreover, the reproductive efficacy of the studied moth pollinated species was similar to that of species pollinated by other kind of vectors.  相似文献

Pollination of the alpine herbDianthus glacialis was studied in a population in the Swiss Alps in 1991 and 1992. Only one insect species,Zygaena exulans (Lepidoptera), was observed to visit the flowers ofD. glacialis. Pollen loads onZ. exulans indicate that it is an effective pollinator ofD. glacialis. In 1991,Z. exulans frequently visited flowers ofD. glacialis. However, in 1992 almost no visits could be observed. Despite the occurrence of pollinators and the conspicuous flowers ofD. glacialis, there are strong indications that this plant is mainly selfing: (1) anthesis of individual flowers is short (c. one and a half days), (2) protandry, although pronounced in otherDianthus spp., is absent, (3) nectar production is low, (4) odour production is weak, (5) seed production by spontaneous selfing is high, (6) seed set in emasculated flowers is extremely low and (7) the seed/ovule ratio is distinctly higher inD. glacialis than in outcrossing plants.—Selfing inD. glacialis could have evolved under a shortage of pollinators during the glaciation periods. Present levels of cross-pollination byZ. exulans have apparently not been sufficient to reverse the pollination mechanism ofD. glacialis from selfing to outcrossing.  相似文献

The life cycle and autoecology of three Mediterranean thorny species,Onopordum nervosum (Iberian endemic),Cirsium scabrum (Western Mediterranean) andCarthamus arborescens (Iberian-North African), of potential use in agriculture as bioenergetic, forage or oil producing plants were studied. These threeCardueae spp. are good examples of ways in which Mediterranean plants adapt their typical annual cycle to avoid summer droughts.O. nervosum is a perennial, monocarpic, heliophilous species which flowers in early summer and grows even under the extreme xeric conditions of the Mediterranean summers. It is a basiphilous plant usually found in sandy-loamy and sandy-clayey-loamy soils with a marked geographical variability in its seed germination.C. scabrum is a perennial, monocarpic species which has a long life cycle, flowering in summer and growing only during the wet months. It is not well-adapted to droughts and is usually restricted to acid soils.C. arborescens is a perennial, polycarpic species which flowers in spring and dries up in summer. It is usually found in basic loamy-sandy or sandy-loamy soils poor in organic matter.  相似文献

  • Breeding systems of plants determine their reliance on pollinators and ability to produce seeds following self‐pollination. Self‐sterility, where ovules that are penetrated by self‐pollen tubes that do not develop into seeds, is usually considered to represent either a system of late‐acting self‐incompatibility or strong early inbreeding depression. Importantly, it can lead to impaired female function through ovule or seed discounting when stigmas receive mixtures of self and cross pollen, unless cross pollen is able to reach the ovary ahead of self pollen (‘prepotency’). Self‐sterility associated with ovule penetration by self‐pollen tubes appears to be widespread among the Amaryllidaceae.
  • We tested for self‐sterility in three Cyrtanthus species – C. contractus, C. ventricosus and C. mackenii – by means of controlled hand‐pollination experiments. To determine the growth rates and frequency of ovule penetration by self‐ versus cross‐pollen tubes, we used fluorescence microscopy to examine flowers of C. contractus harvested 24, 48 and 72 h after pollination, in conjunction with a novel method of processing these images digitally. To test the potential for ovule discounting (loss of cross‐fertilisation opportunities when ovules are disabled by self‐pollination), we pollinated flowers of C. contractus and C. mackenii with mixtures of self‐ and cross pollen.
  • We recorded full self‐sterility for C. contractus and C. ventricosus, and partial self‐sterility for C. mackenii. In C. contractus, we found no differences in the growth rates of self‐ and cross‐pollen tubes, nor in the proportions of ovules penetrated by self‐ and cross‐pollen tubes. In this species, seed set was depressed (relative to cross‐pollinated controls) when flowers received a mixture of self and cross pollen, but this was not the case for C. mackenii.
  • These results reveal variation in breeding systems among Cyrtanthus species and highlight the potential for gender conflict in self‐sterile species in which ovules are penetrated and disabled by pollen tubes from self pollen.

The annual Mediterranean herbTheligonum cynocrambe shows a peculiar combination of morphological characters, e.g., switch from decussate to spiral phyllotaxis with 90–100° divergence, combined with a change from interpetiolar to lateral stipules, anemophily, lack of calyx, flowers often dimerous to trimerous, corolla fused in both male and female flowers, male flowers extra-axillary, with 2–19 stamens per flower, female flowers axillary, with inferior uniovulate ovary, basilateral style and perianth, nut-like fruits with elaiosome. In male flowers the androecium emerges as an (uneven) elliptical rim with a central depression. This common girdling primordium is divided up into several stamen primordia. In male flowers with low stamen number the stamen primordia may occupy the corners alternating with the corolla lobes. There are no epipetalous androecial primordia that secondarily divide into stamens. Male flowers occasionally show a hemispherical base that may be interpreted as remnant of the inferior ovary. In female flowers a ring primordium grows into a tube on which the petal lobes arise. The perianth and style become displaced adaxially by uneven growth of the inferior ovary. The ovary is basically bilocular. The lower region of the ovary is provided with a septum that is overtopped and hidden by the single curved ovule.Theligonum is referred to theRubiaceae-Rubioideae, with theAnthospermeae andPaederieae as most closely related tribes.  相似文献

The Australian midge orchid Corunastylis apostasioides of the tribe Diurideae has completely eliminated any male contribution in the process of seed formation, which occurs directly from the maternal tissue by a process termed apomixis. Here, we report C. apostasioides to be an obligate apomictic species devoid of any sexuality and compare its development to a close sexual relative C. fimbriata (R. Br.) D.L. Jones & M.A. Clem. Apomictic characteristics in C. apostasioides include production of seed in absence of fertilization, frequently closed flowers, production of immature pollen in non-dehiscent anthers, expansion of ovaries despite the lack of fertilization and the absence of a citronella scent that is found in C. fimbriata produced to attract pollinating vinegar flies (Jones 2006). The nature of apomixis in C. apostasioides was examined by ovule histology and amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) in each case drawing comparison with sexual C. fimbriata. In C. apostasioides the central megaspore mother cell undergoes diplosporic apomixis, while additional embryos are derived from nucellar or integument initials formed by sporophytic apomixis. Typical of apomicts, C. apostasioides is polyploid compared to the sexual C. fimbriata. The divergences of C. apostasioides from sexuality to apomictic development are discussed.  相似文献
