From Disgust to Desire: Changing Attitudes toward Beringian Mushrooms. Separated by national borders and the International Dateline, the native communities inhabiting the Bering Strait regions of Russia and Alaska share a common natural environment, myriad cultural similarities, and long-standing social ties. Their subsistence diets also are similar, except that wild mushrooms are revered on the Russian side of the Bering Strait (Chukotka) and are feared and avoided in Alaska. This paper explores the origins of this dietary difference and probes the social dimensions of food and cuisine with respect to the culinary utilization of wild mushrooms.     

DECOMP--from interpreting Mass Spectrometry peaks to solving the Money Changing Problem

We introduce Decomp, a tool that computes the sum formula of all molecules whose mass equals the input mass. This problem arises frequently in biochemistry and mass spectrometry (MS), when we know the molecular mass of a protein, DNA or metabolite fragment but have no other information. A closely related problem is known as the Money Changing Problem (MCP), where all masses are positive integers. Recently, efficient algorithms have been developed for the MCP, in which Decomp applies to real-valued MS data. The excellent performance of this method on proteomic and metabolomic MS data has recently been demonstrated. Decomp has an easy-to-use graphical interface, which caters for both types of users: those interested in solving MCP instances and those submitting MS data. Variation in the Trajectories of Depressive Symptoms: Results from the Americans' Changing Lives Study

This study examines the association between race and depressive symptoms over a 16‐year study period. The analysis is based on the responses of 3,485 African-American and White respondents from four waves of the Americans' Changing Lives Panel Study. Growth mixture modeling was used to identify latent trajectory classes based on the reported levels of depressive symptoms over 16 years. Four latent trajectory classes were identified: two “high-risk” groups and two “low-risk” groups. Findings show the heterogeneity among and within racial groups in their trajectories of depressive symptoms and the distinct demographic and social relationship predictors for symptom trajectories.     

<Emphasis Type="BoldItalic">Digital Humanitarians: How Big Data Is Changing the Face of Humanitarian Response</Emphasis>

This is a review of Patrick Meier’s 2015 book, Digital Humanitarians: How Big Data Is Changing the Face of Humanitarian Response. The book explores the role of technologies such as high-resolution satellite imagery, online social media, drones, and artificial intelligence in humanitarian responses during disasters such as the 2010 Haiti earthquake. In this analysis, the book is examined using a humanitarian health ethics perspective.

Dr. Jo Handelsman, Howard Hughes Medical Institute Professor in the Department of Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology at Yale University, is a long-time devotee of scientific teaching, receiving this year’s Presidential Award for Science Mentoring. She gave a seminar entitled “What is Scientific Teaching? The Changing Landscape of Science Education” as a part of the Scientific Education Colloquia Series in spring 2011. After dissecting what is wrong with the status quo of American scientific education, several ideological and practical changes are proposed, including active learning, regular assessment, diversity, and mentorship.     

持变概率法与核酸序列中的信息提取

利用一种新的序列分析方法——持变概率法,对GenBank数据库中果蝇、小家鼠、人类的7310条核酸序列片断进行分析,得出：（1）核酸序列中的持变概率与持变数呈指数关系变化;（2）同一种生物同一染色体的持变指数很相近;（3）同一种生物不同染色体的持变指数有一定的差异;（4）不同种生物染色体的持变指数之间有显著差异。说明持变概率法能够提取核酸序列的特征,持变指数有助于基因的分类与识别,此方法可用于基因序列分析。
