Synopsis The sea trout,Salmo trutta, from the Vardnes River generally stays in freshwater during winter. The results from 11 years of tagging experiments showed that the mean annual duration of the feeding migration in the sea was 68 ± 21 days (yearly means ranging between 54 and 88 days). A pronounced variation was found with size, sex and time of migration of the fish and between the different years. The males stayed for a shorter time in the sea (mean 66 days) than the females (mean 69 days) and they usually descended later and ascended earlier. Those fish that descended first stayed for the longest period in the sea. The mean annual duration of stay in the sea for first and second time migrants to the sea was positively correlated with the mean sea temperature in May (r2 > 0.5). A positive correlation was also found between the annual duration of stay in the sea for the sea trout above 33 cm and the mean temperature in the river in July (r2 > 0. 6). Prolonged mean yearly sea sojourn was generally correlated with higher sea temperatures. Water temperature-salinity effects are discussed.  相似文献

The formation of sea urchin ‘barrens’ on shallow temperate rocky reefs is well documented. However there has been much conjecture about the underlying mechanisms leading to sea urchin barrens, and relatively little experimentation to test these ideas critically. We conducted a series of manipulative experiments to determine whether predation mortality is an important mechanism structuring populations of the sea urchin Heliocidaris erythrogramma in Tasmania. Tethered juvenile and adult sea urchins experienced much higher rates of mortality inside no-take marine reserves where sea urchin predators were abundant compared to adjacent fished areas where predators were fewer. Mortality of tagged (but not tethered) sea urchins was also notably higher in marine reserves than in adjacent areas open to fishing. When a range of sizes of sea urchins was exposed to three sizes of rock lobsters in a caging experiment, juvenile sea urchins were eaten more frequently than larger sea urchins by all sizes of rock lobster, but only the largest rock lobsters (> 120 mm CL) were able to consume large adult sea urchins. Tagging (but not tethering) juvenile and adult sea urchins in two separate marine reserves indicated that adult sea urchins experience higher predation mortality than juveniles, probably because juveniles can shelter in cryptic microhabitat more effectively. In a field experiment in which exposure of sea urchins to rock lobster (Jasus edwardsii) and demersal reef fish predators was manipulated, rock lobsters were shown to be more important than fish as predators of adult sea urchins in a marine reserve. We conclude that predators, and particularly rock lobsters, exert significant predation mortality on H. erythrogramma in Tasmanian marine reserves, and that adult sea urchins are more vulnerable than smaller cryptic individuals. Fishing of rock lobsters is likely to reduce an important component of mortality in H. erythrogramma populations.  相似文献

Habitat characteristics are primary determinants of nearshore marine communities. However, biological drivers like predation can also be important for community composition. Sea otters (Enhydra lutris ssp.) are a salient example of a keystone species exerting top‐down control on ecosystem community structure. The translocation and subsequent population growth and range expansion of the northern sea otter (Enhydra lutris kenyoni) in Washington State over the last five decades has created a spatio‐temporal gradient in sea otter occupation time and density, and acts as a natural experiment to quantify how sea otter population status and habitat type influence sea otter diet. We collected focal observations of sea otters foraging at sites across the gradient in varying habitat types between 2010 and 2017. We quantified sea otter diet composition and diversity, and long‐term rates of energy gain across the gradient. We found that sea otter diet diversity was positively correlated with cumulative sea otter density, while rate of energy gain was negatively correlated with cumulative density. Additionally, we found that habitat type explained 1.77 times more variance in sea otter diet composition than sea otter cumulative density. Long‐term diet studies can provide a broader picture of sea otter population status in Washington State.  相似文献

Three species of amphibious sea kraits (Laticauda spp.) require drinking freshwater to regulate water balance. The extent of terrestriality is known to differ among them. Species with higher extent of terrestriality would drink freshwater accumulated on land, whereas less terrestrial species would rely totally on freshwater that runs into the sea. Consequently, we predicted that the latter species might have a better ability to follow the flow of freshwater or lower salinity water in the sea than the former. We investigated the freshwater discrimination ability of three sea krait species, using a Y-maze apparatus. We found that Laticauda semifasciata and Laticauda laticaudata, less terrestrial species, followed freshwater significantly more frequently than seawater, whereas Laticauda colubrina, more terrestrial species, unbiasedly selected freshwater and seawater. This result supports our prediction and suggests that less terrestrial sea kraits more efficiently access freshwater sources in the sea than highly terrestrial sea kraits. It is likely that behavioral rehydration systems vary among sea kraits in relation to their terrestrial tendency.  相似文献

In artificial sea water in which the Clconcentration was reduced to less than 10% of that in normal sea water by its replacement with Br, sea urchin eggs were fertilized and developed into abnormal plutei following almost the same time schedule as in natural sea water. These embryos had poorly developed spicules, short pluteus arms, somewhat jagged embryo-walls and quasi-normal archenterons. Similar embryos were obtained in another artificial sea water in which 90% of the Clconcentration in normal sea water was reduced by Brand 10% by acetate. In artificial sea water, in which either 90% of the Clwas replaced by Bror 10% was replaced by acetate, embryos developed into plutei with quasi-normal spicules, pluteus arms and archenterons. These findings indicate that deficiency of Clresults in somewhat abnormal sea urchin embryos. When cells derived from isolated micromeres, were cultured in these Cl-deficient artificial sea waters, containing Brin place of more than 70% of the normal Clconcentration in sea water, spicule formation was strongly inhibited, but pseudopodial cables were well developed. Thus, external Clseems to be necessary for at least normal formation of spicule rods.  相似文献

Many sea hares (Opisthobranchia, Anaspidea) sequester secondary metabolites from their algal diets. Tests of the hypothesis that sequestered metabolites deter predators have yielded ambiguous results. We manipulated secondary metabolites in vivo by collecting the sea hare Stylocheilus striatus from different host algae, and by raising it in the laboratory on artificial diets containing or lacking secondary metabolites (malyngamides A and B). Sea hares were then offered to fish. Fish identity affected vulnerability of sea hares to predation far more than did diet history. Wrasses and bream ate most sea hares tasted; damselfishes, goatfishes, and other fishes rejected most. Diet history affected vulnerability of sea hares to wrasses in one of four experiments, and if data from all experiments were pooled, but the effect was modest. Diet history did not affect vulnerability of sea hares to other fish taxa. Despite several studies, evidence for diet-derived defenses against predators in sea hares remains equivocal.  相似文献

Summary Recurrent outbreaks of disease between 1980 and 1983 caused catastrophic mortality of sea urchins (>260,000 t fresh weight) along 280 km (straight line distance) of the Atlantic coast of Nova Scotia. The complete elimination of sea urchins and concomitant development of fleshy macroalgal communities have occurred along different parts of this coast in different years. Macroalgal communities in areas where sea urchins died off 1, 3 and 4 years previously are compared to existing sea urchin-dominated barren grounds and to a mature kelp bed without sea urchins. Changes in macroalgal cover and species composition, and increases in biomass, density and size of kelp (Laminaria) species, characterize the succession from barren grounds to 3- and 4-year-old kelp beds. The greatest change occurred between one and three years following sea urchin mass mortality. Within 3 years, kelp beds attained a level of biomass (7.6 kg m-2) comparable to that of mature beds. Recovery of sea urchin populations via recruitment of planktonic larvae has been slow and spatially variable. Large-scale reciprocal fluctuations in kelp and sea urchin biomass may characterize the trajectory of a dynamic system which cycles between two alternate community states: kelp beds and sea urchin-dominated barren grounds. Periodic decimation of sea urchin populations by disease may be an important mechanism underlying this cyclicity.  相似文献

The amount of ultraviolet (UV)-B radiation reaching the sea surface has increased due to ozone depletion. Several laboratory studies have highlighted the negative impacts of UV radiation on fish using hatchery-reared specimens. However, potential differences in UV tolerance between wild and hatchery-reared fish have been given little consideration. Wild and reared juveniles of red sea bream and black sea bream were exposed to one of four different UV-B radiation levels (1.8; 1.1; 0.4; 0?W/m2) for 4?h. Survival rate was measured every 2?h for a period of 24?h (red sea bream) or 48?h (black sea bream) following exposure. Wild and reared juvenile red sea bream were characterized by similar survival rate, with survival declining to almost 0?% 24?h after exposure at the 1.1 and 1.8?W/m2 levels. In black sea bream, wild individuals showed significantly higher survival than reared fish in levels 1.1 and 1.8?W/m2. Melanophore density was also measured since melanin absorbs UV radiation. Wild black sea bream showed higher melanophore density compared to reared individuals, while no such difference was observed in red sea bream. We conclude that wild black sea bream juveniles acquire higher UV tolerance partly by increasing melanophore density through exposure to UV radiation. Our results indicate that the predicted impacts of UV radiation on fish populations solely based on experimentation with hatchery-reared specimens may be overestimated for some species.  相似文献

The bactericidal action of sea water was measured as the difference in survival of cells of Escherichia coli in untreated and autoclaved portions of water samples. The beneficial effect of sterilization by heat on the survival of E. coli in sea water varied with season and was most marked during summer months, however, the magnitude of the effect differed greatly from sample to sample. The more obvious and commonly suggested explanations for the bactericidal action of sea water were tested experimentally. The pH and salinity of sea water were changed by autoclaving, but the direction of the former was detrimental rather than beneficial and the significance of the latter was not clarified. The survival of cells of E. coli in filtered portions of some water samples was greater than that in untreated portions and equal to that in autoclaved portions, indicating that predators and competitors removed by filtration had contributed significantly to the rapid death of the bacterium in the untreated water. However, in the majority of samples tested, survival of E. coli in autoclaved water was considerably greater than survival in filtered water.

The possibility that the beneficial effect of autoclaving over and above that of filtration resulted from inactivation or destruction by heat of bacteriophages and thermolabile toxic substances such as antibiotics was considered. Moreover, the suggestion was tested that the increased survival of E. coli in autoclaved sea water was due to the ability of heat to disrupt and degrade microbial cells and thermolabile compounds and, thereby, to cause an increase in concentration of available nutrients in sea water. It was concluded that the bactericidal action of sea water is not explicable in terms of the destruction or inactivation by heat of bacteriophages or antibiotics. Although added organic matter influenced the survival of E. coli, the test organism was not an effective competitor in sea water and the nutrient levels required to offset the bactericidal action were excessive.

Artificial sea water was demonstrated to exert a bactericidal action comparable to that of natural sea water. Low levels of cysteine which favor survival of E. coli in natural sea water had a similar effect in artificial sea water. Nevertheless, it is not at this time possible to conclude that the factors responsible for the bactericidal action of artificial sea water are identical with those responsible in natural sea water.

Fractal geometry and other multi-scale analyses have become popular tools for investigating spatial patterns of animal distributions in heterogeneous environments. In theory, changes in patterns of animal distributions with changes in scale reflect transitions between the controlling influences of one environmental factor or process over another. In an effort to find linkages between Steller sea lions (Eumetopias jubatus) and their environment, the objective of this study was to determine if the spatial distribution of Steller sea lions at sea displayed similar scaling properties to the variation of two environmental features, including bathymetry and sea surface temperature (SST). Additionally, distributions of Steller sea lion point patterns were examined with respect to measurements of bathymetric complexity. From February 2000 to May 2004, satellite transmitters were deployed on 10 groups of juvenile Steller sea lions (n=52) at eight different locations within the Aleutian Islands and Gulf of Alaska. Indices of fractal dimension were calculated for each group of sea lions using a unit square box-counting method, whereas indices of bathymetry and SST patchiness were derived by conducting a variance ratio analysis over the same scales. Distributions of Steller sea lions at sea displayed self-similar fractal patterns, suggesting that individuals were distributed in a continuous hierarchical set of clumps within clumps across scales, and foraging behavior was likely influenced by a scale invariant mechanism. Patterns of bathymetric variability also were self-similar, whereas patterns of SST variability were scale dependent and failed to retain self-similar spatial structure at larger scales. These results indicate that the distributions of Steller sea lions at sea were more influenced by bathymetry than SST at the scales examined, but scale-dependent patterns in the distribution of Steller sea lions at sea or linkages with SST may have been apparent if analyses were conducted at finer spatial scales.  相似文献

The sea lamprey control program in the Great Lakes has effectively reduced the abundance of sea lamprey, and, in conjunction with appropriate fishery management practices, has contributed to the restoration of valuable stocks of fish — particularly the salmonids. Sea lamprey producing tributaries of Lake Huron have been treated with lampricide on a continuing basis since 1966, and indications of decreasing abundance of sea lamprey have been evident since 1969. Control of sea lamprey has been more successful in Georgian Bay than in North Channel, as shown by the numbers of spawning phase animals captured in assessment devices, and by the incidence of lamprey-inflicted wounds on fish. The St. Marys River — the only known uncontrolled sources of recruitment to parasitic sea lamprey populations of Lake Huron — is suspected of being the cause of the higher levels of sea lamprey abundance observed in the northwest part of the lake.  相似文献

Population-specific assessment and management of anadromous fish at sea requires detailed information about the distribution at sea over ontogeny for each population. However, despite a long history of mixed-stock sea fisheries on Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar, migration studies showing that some salmon populations feed in different regions of the Baltic Sea and variation in dynamics occurs among populations feeding in the Baltic Sea, such information is often lacking. Also, current assessment of Baltic salmon assumes equal distribution at sea and therefore equal responses to changes in off-shore sea fisheries. Here, we test for differences in distribution at sea among and within ten Atlantic salmon Salmo salar populations originating from ten river-specific hatcheries along the Swedish Baltic Sea coast, using individual data from >125,000 tagged salmon, recaptured over five decades. We show strong population and size-specific differences in distribution at sea, varying between year classes and between individuals within year classes. This suggests that Atlantic salmon in the Baltic Sea experience great variation in environmental conditions and exploitation rates over ontogeny depending on origin and that current assessment assumptions about equal exploitation rates in the offshore fisheries and a shared environment at sea are not valid. Thus, our results provide additional arguments and necessary information for implementing population-specific management of salmon, also when targeting life stages at sea.  相似文献

Both in field and laboratory choice tests, the sea star, Asterias forbesi (Desor), was attracted to distant upstream clams, Mercenaria mercenaria (Linnaeus). Clams exposed to upstream sea stars were chosen less frequently by downstream sea stars than clams without sea stars upstream. Sea stars neither attracted nor repelled downstream conspecifics.When clams were exposed to upstream sea stars, their oxygen consumption decreased, as did their pumping rate and activity (as measured by number of visible siphons). The former may result from one or both of the latter.It is concluded that clam and sea star sense each other over a distance by chemical cues. The response of the clam is a general lowering of activity which may result in decreased attractiveness to sea star predators. This response may serve as a defensive measure against distance detection by Asterias forbesi.  相似文献

Seasonal occurrence of the parasitic copepod Lepeophtheirus salmonis (sea lice) was studied from March to December 2001 in two large north Norwegian sill fjords without fish farming activity, the Ranafjord and the Balsfjord. Anadromous brown trout Salmo trutta (sea trout) in both fjords had a low infestation rate during all sampling periods, but followed a seasonal pattern. During early and late winter (November to December and March to April) and spring (May to June), the prevalence varied from 0 to 25% and the abundance was <0·5 sea lice. Adults dominated (92%) during this period, particularly gravid females. In both fjords, the highest prevalence was during September (80–81%, all stages represented). In Ranafjord, the abundance and mean intensity during this month was 6·8 and 8·6 sea lice, respectively, while in Balsfjord it was 3·6 and 4·5 sea lice, respectively. Fish were captured at temperatures down to 1° C and at full strength sea water which is supposed to cause osmoregulatory problems for the fish. This observation has implications for the understanding of high‐latitude sea trout behaviour and can also make the fish more vulnerable to heavy sea lice infestation during this period. It is suggested that winter running sea trout help to maintain a self replicating local population of sea lice within such fjord systems where other possible hosts ( e.g . farmed Atlantic salmon Salmo salar ) are not present during a whole year cycle.  相似文献

The symbiosis between giant sea anemones and anemonefish on coral reefs is well known, but little information exists on impacts of this interaction on the sea anemone host. On a coral reef at Eilat, northern Red Sea, individuals of the sea anemone Entacmaea quadricolor that possessed endemic anemonefish Amphiprion bicinctus expanded their tentacles significantly more frequently than did those lacking anemonefish. When anemonefish were experimentally removed, sea anemone hosts contracted partially. Within 1–4 h in most cases, individuals of the butterflyfish Chaetodon fasciatus arrived and attacked the sea anemones, causing them to contract completely into reef holes. Upon the experimental return of anemonefish, the anemone hosts re-expanded. The long-term growth rate and survival of the sea anemones depended on the size and number of their anemonefish. Over several years, sea anemones possessing small or no fish exhibited negative growth (shrinkage) and eventually disappeared, while those with at least one large fish survived and grew. We conclude that host sea anemones sense the presence of symbiotic anemonefish via chemical and/or mechanical cues, and react by altering their expansion behavior. Host sea anemones that lack anemonefish large enough to defend them against predation may remain contracted in reef holes, unable to feed or expose their tentacles for photosynthesis, resulting in their shrinkage and eventual death.  相似文献

Aims: To isolate a fucoidan‐utilizing strain from seawater for sea cucumber fucoidan degradation. Methods and Results: The utilization of sea cucumber fucoidan was monitored by H2SO4–phenol assay for neutral sugar. The bacterium CZ1127 was isolated from seawater and shown to have a relatively large maximum fucoidan‐utilizing rate of 81·5%. CZ1127 was confirmed to belong to the family Flavobacteriaceae by 16S rDNA and physiological analyses. This strain has an ability to utilize fucoidans extracted from various sea cucumbers to different degrees. Both extracellular and intracellular enzymes of CZ1127 could degrade sea cucumber fucoidan, as confirmed by high‐performance size exclusion chromatography. The Mr of sea cucumber fucoidan could be reduced from 792·6 kDa to at least 3·7 kDa by the crude intracellular enzyme of this strain. Conclusions: The marine bacterial strain CZ1127, which belongs to the family Flavobacteriaceae, was found to utilize various sea cucumber fucoidans and furthermore showed promise in sea cucumber fucoidan enzymatic degradation and oligosaccharide preparation. Significance and Impact of the Study: The finding of a novel source can be applied in sea cucumber fucoidan enzymatic degradation. Furthermore, it is the first definite report of a bacterial strain that can utilize the fucoidans from various sea cucumbers.  相似文献

Stability properties of the barren state of a kelp forest-sea urchin system were studied in northern Norway. The ability of the sea urchin Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis to maintain high population densities and recover from perturbations, and the succession of kelp forest revegetation, were studied experimentally by reducing the sea urchin density on a barren skerry. Additional information was obtained from community changes following a natural, but patchy, sea urchin mortality that varied between sites. On the barren grounds, high sea urchin densities (30 50 per m2) is maintained by annual recruitment. Severe reductions of sea urchin densities initiated luxuriant kelp growth, while more moderate reductions allowed establishment of opportunistic algae (during spring and early summer), but no kelps. Succession of algal growth, after the severe decline in sea urchin densities, followed a predictable pattern. At first the substrate was colonized by filamentous algae, but within few weeks they were outcompeted by the fast growing kelp Laminaria saccharina. After 3–4 years of the removal experiment, the slower-growing, long-lived kelp L. hyperborea became increasingly dominant. Increased food availability after reduction in sea urchin density led to increased individual growth of the remaining sea urchins. However, the population density did not increase, neither from recruitment nor immigration from adjacent areas with high sea urchin densities. Possibly, early establishment of a dense kelp stand, may represent a breakpoint in the ability of sea urchins to reestablish a barren state. The ability of L. saccharina quickly to invade and monopolize an area may have both positive and negative effects on the succession towards the climax L. hyperborea kelp forest. Competitive interactions may slow the process, but development of a dense stand of L. saccharina will also reduce grazing risk on scattered recruits of the more slowly growing L. hyperborea.  相似文献

The trophic ecology of cyanobacterial blooms is poorly understood on coral reefs. Blooms of toxic cyanobacteria, Lyngbya majuscula, can quickly form large mats. The herbivorous sea hare, Stylocheilus striatus, and the predatory nudibranch, Gymnodoris ceylonica, often associate with these blooms, forming a linear food chain: nudibranch—sea hare—cyanobacteria. Using laboratory studies, this study quantified (1) the functional response of nudibranchs, (2) the effect of sea hare size on predation rates, and (3) the strength of the indirect effect of sea hare predation on cyanobacteria (i.e., a trophic cascade). Nudibranchs consumed on average 2.4 sea hares d?1, with the consumption of small sea hares 22 times greater than the consumption of large sea hares. Predation of sea hares reduced herbivory. Cyanobacterial biomass was 1.5 times greater when nudibranchs were present relative to when nudibranchs were absent. Although sea hare grazing can substantially reduce cyanobacterial biomass, predation of sea hares may mitigate grazing pressure, and therefore increase the abundance of cyanobacteria.  相似文献

Climate change is altering the biogeochemical and physical characteristics of the Arctic marine environment, which impacts sea ice algal and phytoplankton bloom dynamics and the vertical transport of these carbon sources to benthic communities. Little is known about whether the contribution of sea ice-derived carbon to benthic fauna and nitrogen cycling has changed over multiple decades in concert with receding sea ice. We combined compound-specific stable isotope analysis of amino acids with highly branched isoprenoid diatom lipid biomarkers using archived (1982–2016) tissue of benthivorous Atlantic walrus to examine temporal trends of sea ice-derived carbon, nitrogen isotope baseline and trophic position of Atlantic walrus at high- and mid-latitudes in the Canadian Arctic. Associated with an 18% sea ice decline in the mid-Arctic, sea ice-derived carbon contribution to Atlantic walrus decreased by 75% suggesting a strong decoupling of sea ice-benthic habitats. By contrast, a nearly exclusive amount of sea ice-derived carbon was maintained in high-Arctic Atlantic walrus (98% in 1996 and 89% in 2006) despite a similar percentage in sea ice reduction. Nitrogen isotope baseline or the trophic position of Atlantic walrus did not change over time at either location. These findings indicate latitudinal differences in the restructuring of carbon energy sources used by Atlantic walrus and their benthic prey, and in turn a change in Arctic marine ecosystem functioning between sea ice–pelagic–benthic habitats.  相似文献
