Wicken Fen in East Anglia, UK is a unique habitat and a wetland of international importance. A comparison of water table measurements made between 1928 and 1931 with contemporary observations indicates that summer minimum water table elevations are between 0.20 m and 0.45 m lower than in the past. The disparity cannot be attributed to differences in rainfall. There are a number of reasons why the Fen may be 'drying', but it was not possible to identify a single dominant cause. A simple water balance model that simulates groundwater levels in different areas of the Fen has been developed. This indicates that although locally important, in most years flows of water from ditches into the Fen comprise less than 10% of total summer inputs and in wet summers there is a net outflow from the Fen into the ditches. Based on an assessment of the water requirements of desired vegetation communities, a more active water management strategy than is presently implemented is proposed. This paper highlights how a better quantitative understanding of ecosystem functioning and the impact of human interventions are a pre-requisite for the development and implementation of sustainable wetland conservation strategies.  相似文献

We tested the prediction that global warming has caused recent decreases in body weight (Bergmann's rule) and increases in wing length (Allen's rule) in 14 species of passerine birds at two localities in England: Wicken Fen (1968–2003) and Treswell Wood (1973–2003).
Predicted long-term linear decreases in residual body weight occurred in four species: dunnocks (Wicken Fen), and great tits, blue tits and bullfinches (Treswell Wood). Non-linear decreases also occurred in reed warblers and blackcaps at Wicken Fen, which also had a surprising linear increase in residual body weight in blackbirds.
Residual wing lengths increased linearly, as predicted, in six of seven species at Wicken Fen. Whereas there were non-linear long-term increases in wrens, dunnocks and blackbirds in Treswell Wood. Unexpected linear decreases also occurred in residual wing lengths in willow warblers (Wicken Fen), and blue tits, great tits and chaffinches (Treswell Wood).
The most parsimonious explanation for such long-term changes in body weight is global warming, as predicted by Bergmann's rule. Greater site and species-specific effects on wing length (e.g. non-linear changes plus shorter wings in the woodland habitat) suggest a less straightforward conclusion concerning Allen's rule, probably because wing length involved variation in both bone and feather growth.
Changes in residual body weights and wing lengths often differed between species and were sometimes non-linear, perhaps reflecting short-term modifications in selection pressures. Human-induced influences are discussed, such as avian predator population densities and land-use change. Short-term variation in temperature had little effect, but rainfall did explain the unusual increase in blackbird body weight, possibly as a result of improving food (earthworm) availability.  相似文献

We investigated the importance of water chemistry and water regime for vascular plant and bryophyte species distribution in Western Carpathian mires dominated bySphagnum. Seventy-seven small circle plots distributed across a wide geographical area, a wide range of mineral richness and all possible microtopographical features were sampled in terms of species composition, physical-chemical water properties and water regime during one growing season. Both water chemistry and water regime were found to be important factors for vegetation composition. Bryophytes reflected only one clear gradient, connected to base-richness (pH, conductivity) and maximal water-level, whereas three different environmental gradients determined the occurrence of vascular plants: water-level amplitude, base-richness and an indistinct gradient presumably connected to peat layer thickness. When the entire data set was subjected to DCA ordination, the first resulting axis was governed by the bryophyte subset, whereas the second one was governed by the vascular plant subset. The species density of vascular plants was positively correlated with pH and conductivity. On the contrary, bryophyte species density showed no relationship to environmental factors. We further compared the pH values measured in groundwater and in water squeezed from bryophytes from the same plot; these plots were distributed along the base-richness gradient. Only in the acidic mires did the use of squeezed-water chemistry in the analyses give results similar to the use of groundwater pH. Further, we found thatSphagnum species with a similar response to the base-richness gradient had differentiated niches with respect to the water level gradient and vice versa.Sphagnum contortum andS. warnstorfii exhibiting the same demands for groundwater pH were segregated along the gradient of maximum water level. The habitat conditions in a mire on the southern Alps of Italy were defined based on data on topography, hydrology, water chemistry, peat chemistry and floristic composition. Water flowed along the main longitudinal axis from the eastern dry sector to the western wet sector of the mire. Along the transverse axes the water table assumed a convex shape during dry periods, which resulted in water flowing towards the margins of the mire. During wet periods the water table assumed a concave shape, determining a flow of water from the margins towards the mire centre. The absence of any vertical groundwater flows enhanced habitat acidification, particularly in the eastern sector of the mire characterised by a smaller peat thickness. Surface water in the central portion of the mire had low calcium concentration and low electrical conductivity, comparable to those found in ombrotrophic bogs. Calcium concentration and electrical conductivity in surface water were higher along the margins, indicating a certain degree of mineral soil water inflow. Total contents of major nutrients (N, P and K) in the peat were rather homogeneous over the mire, while calcium concentrations were slightly higher in the peat layers of the wet portion of the mire. Species distribution was strongly influenced, rather than by surface water chemistry, by water table position and rate of surface water flow.  相似文献

Diatom indicators of wetland condition were developed and tested by assessing human disturbance, water chemistry, and species composition of benthic, epiphytic, and planktonic diatoms from 20 wetlands sampled for 2 years. One sample from each site was randomly selected to form a development data set, while the rest were used as the test data set. Human disturbance indicated substantial differences among wetlands in hydrologic modification, impervious surface, and potential for non-point source contamination. These landscape alterations were related to increases in pH, non-nutrient ions, and nutrients and decreases in dissolved organic carbon and water color. Pre-existing diatom indicators, calculated with autecological information from lakes and aquatic habitats, correlated highly to relevant water chemistry and human disturbance scores. Weighted average models (WAM) of Cl, conductivity, pH, and alkalinity derived with the Maine development data set correlated to relevant water chemistry and human disturbance of the test wetlands. Diatom assemblage attributes that correlated with human disturbance were selected to combine into a multimetric index of biotic condition (IBC). IBCs and WAMs from benthic and epiphytic diatoms were usually more precisely related to relevant environmental factors than planktonic diatoms. These results showed that human disturbance alkalized wetlands, enriched them with nutrients, and diatom assemblages responded to these changes. Indicator development protocols for streams can be readily adapted for use in wetlands.  相似文献

The work described here provides a quantitative basis for die interpretation of fossil assemblages of Mollusca from wetland habitats. Wetlands were sampled for living Mollusca in East Anglia (including an intensive study at Wicken Fen) and Scotland. Within the limited geographical area of Wicken Fen, the mollusc fauna may be used to predict the vegetation and hence to reconstruct the environment. Such a relationship did not continue to hold when scattered sites throughout die East Anglian region were studied. However, the relict nature of these fens should be taken into account. In die central Highlands of Scotland, a better correlation was found between mollusc fauna and flora, though this was inadequate for reconstruction of details of the vegetation. Within the context of wetland, the presence of certain rare species of narrow ecological tolerance is considered the best available measure for the reconstruction of die environment from molluscan assemblages, but their absence is meaningless. Quantitative studies of assemblages of the common species may still prove to be of value at the coarser level of discrimination between wetland, grassland and woodland, but the data are not available. Numerous quantitative studies of fossil assemblages of Mollusca from Quaternary sediments have been made and the results have been interpreted to indicate past environmental and climatic conditions. In previous studies, common species have been placed into ecological categories based on qualitative observations of the occurrence of Mollusca in modern environments, and fossil assemblages have then been interpreted as being formed by transport and accumulation from a variety of different habitats. This may be the case, but equally studies of the living assemblages have shown that the structural complexity of a single habitat may lead to species of very different ecological groups living within the same area of ground. It is simpler to interpret certain fossil assemblages as having been formed in situ in structurally diverse environments, rather than invoking mixing from different environments.  相似文献

The relationship between vegetation gradients and temporal variation of groundwater table depth, groundwater pH and electrical conductivity was studied in Bekanbeushi peatland, northern Japan. These environmental factors were expressed using four statistical parameters: maximum, minimum, mean and standard deviation or coefficient of variation during the growing season. The bog–fen–swamp/marsh gradient was primarily explained by minimum, maximum and mean groundwater table depth and minimum pH. The separation between the bog and the fen by minimum pH was particularly clear. Minimum conductivity was secondarily important for explaining this vegetation gradient. The swamp–marsh gradient was explained by the standard deviation of groundwater table depth. Maximum pH and conductivity were not significant in explaining either of these gradients. This study suggests that parameters that are obtained from the consecutive measurement of environmental factors may have differing significance in explaining vegetation gradients in these peatlands, and values from a single sampling may miss important ecological information.  相似文献

Members of the monophyletic SOL cluster are large filamentous bacteria inhabiting the pelagic zone of many freshwater habitats. The abundances of SOL bacteria and compositions of SOL communities in samples from 115 freshwater ecosystems around the globe were determined by fluorescence in situ hybridization with cluster- and subcluster-specific oligonucleotide probes. The vast majority (73%) of sampled ecosystems harbored SOL bacteria, and all three previously described SOL subclusters (LD2, HAL, and GKS2-217) were detected. The morphometric and chemicophysical parameters and trophic statuses of ecosystems were related to the occurrence and subcluster-specific composition of SOL bacteria by multivariate statistical methods. SOL bacteria did not occur in acidic lakes (pH < 6), and their abundance was negatively related to high trophy and pH. The subcluster-specific variation in the compositions of SOL communities could be related to the pH, electrical conductivity, altitude, and trophic status of ecosystems. All three known SOL subclusters differed in respect to their tolerated ranges of pH and conductivity. Complete niche separation was observed between the vicarious subclusters GKS2-217 and LD2; the former occurred in soft-water lakes, whereas the latter was found in a broad range of hard-water habitats. The third subgroup (HAL) showed a wide environmental tolerance and was usually found sympatrically with the LD2 or GKS2-217 subcluster. Ecological differentiation of SOL bacteria at the subcluster level was most probably driven by differential adaptation to water chemistry. The distribution of the two vicarious taxa seems to be predominantly controlled by the geological backgrounds of the catchment areas of the habitats.  相似文献

Wicken Fen National Nature Reserve (NNR) in Cambridgeshire, U.K. is a wetland of international importance isolated in a landscape dominated by arable farming. The prospect of species extinctions within the NNR led to the creation of the Wicken Fen Vision, an ambitious project that will eventually expand the reserve boundary by the purchase and restoration of c.50 km2 of arable land. We sampled three fields from each of three distinct age‐categories of restoration land (5, 15, and 60 years post‐arable), and three fields within the adjacent, undrained NNR, to determine (1) differences in seed bank composition across age‐categories, (2) relationships between restoration age, the seed bank and standing vegetation, and (3) changes in species traits across age‐categories. Historic arable management contributed to an apparent “vertical mixing” effect in the seed bank of the youngest two age‐categories, with associated and significant differences in species functional traits across the study area. Almost all plants associated with NNR vegetation were absent from restoration area seed banks and standing vegetation. Seed bank species common to all ages‐categories exhibited a bias toward moderate to high Ellenberg F (moisture) values, persistent seed banks, and lateral vegetative spread. Relatively short (c. 6 years) periods of drainage and plowing impact heavily upon seed bank diversity and soils, resulting in a lack of predrainage vegetation, even after decades of subsequent restoration adjacent to intact, species‐rich habitat. However, the seed banks of highly degraded fields can contribute toward the creation of novel wetland vegetation assemblages over time and under suitable environmental conditions.  相似文献

  • 1 Since the early 1950s, when the British swallowtail butterfly (Papilio machaon britannicus) became extinct at Wicken Fen, this subspecies has been confined to marshes around the Norfolk Broads. Here too, however, its abundance appears to be declining.
  • 2 The ecology of the butterfly has been studied in Norfolk and at Wicken (by small-scale introductions) and the main factors determining its abundance are described.
  • 3 A morphometric study of museum specimens has shown that populations of the butterfly in Norfolk and at Wicken differed in a number of size and shape characters. These differences were most marked between 1890 and 1920, but subsequently were almost lost.
  • 4 Studies of the status and performance of the butterfly's food plant, Peucedanum palustre have shown that it is smaller, produces less seed, and is shorter-lived at Wicken than in Norfolk.
  • 5 In the light of these findings, the possibility of successfully re-establishing the butterfly at Wicken, and the possible causes of the decline of the species in Norfolk are discussed.

Conductivity and major ion chemistry data were analyzed for a suite of Nebraska (USA) natural lakes, reservoirs, sand pits, and barrow pits to evaluate the magnitude of climatic versus non-climatic influence on ionic concentration and composition. In both natural lakes and sand and barrow pits, conductivity is positively related to longitude and reflects decreasing effective moisture from east to west. Reservoirs showed no relationship between lake conductivity and location, probably because the reservoirs are very strongly influenced by groundwater and surface water inflow and have shorter residence times relative to the other lake types. At smaller spatial scales, conductivity among natural lakes is variable. Lakes that are at low elevation within a groundwater flow system were fresh, because of substantial input of fresh groundwater. In contrast, lakes at high elevation exhibited a wide range of conductivity, probably because of differences in the degree of connection to groundwater and surface to volume ratio impacts on evaporation rates. Differences also were evident among natural lakes in terms of their response to seasonal changes in precipitation. Sub-saline and saline lakes showed more seasonal variation in conductivity than freshwater lakes, and lakes in the more arid part of the state showed larger responses to precipitation change than those in areas to the east that receive higher precipitation.  相似文献

The quality of the groundwater in the study area was evaluated through various water quality indexes for drinking and irrigation purposes. To evaluate the water quality index, 186 groundwater samples were sampled during 2 different seasons, likely pre-monsoon (PRM) and post-monsoon (POM). The collected samples were measured for physical-chemical parameters like pH, EC, TDS, Na, K, Ca, Mg, Cl, HCO3, PO4, SO4, NO3 and H4SiO4. The research findings indicated that groundwater of the study area is approaching an alarming stage of its suitability for drinking purpose because a major percentage (i. e. 56%: PRM, 46%: POM) of samples are within poor category. Thus, the proper management strategy for water resources must be developed and a preventive management practice to address this issue must be implemented. Various water quality parameters such as electrical conductivity (EC), pH, salinity hazard, sodium hazard and permeability indexes (PI) were considered for irrigation water quality evaluation and it is inferred that the groundwater of the study area is suitable for irrigation. The PRM and POM samples with higher Na + and Cl concentrations were identified. The primary source of groundwater contamination is anthropogenic factors like domestic, agriculture effluents and mining activities. However, the groundwater of these regions is also greatly influenced by geogenic factors like weathering, rock-water interaction and precipitation which results in groundwater water level fluctuation. The research findings suggest the groundwater quality of this region is approaching an alarming stage for drinking purposes. Thus, developing a management strategy for drinking water sources and implementing preventive management practices to address this issue becomes imperative.  相似文献

Abstract. Vegetation was sampled at 170 plots in five mires in the Italian Alps to characterize the distribution of plant species along the main environmental gradients. Water-table depth, water pH, electrical conductivity, Ca-, Mg-, K- and Na-concen-trations in soil pore water, shade intensity, and distance from the mire margin were determined at each plot. At mire margins the water table was deeper than in the mire expanse, and K-, Ca- and Mg-concentrations, and conductivity were higher. The first and by far most important axis of a DCCA-ordination was interpreted as a gradient of water-table depth, in relation to the distance from the mire margin, whereas the second axis was mainly associated with water pH.  相似文献

Summary Utricularia vulgaris growing at Wicken Fen, England, showed rapid turnover of the trapping apparatus. New groups of leaves, each bearing many traps, were produced at a rate of 1.4–2.8 groups per day from April to September, 1987. Old leaves decayed at a comparable rate, so that individual leaves survived for less than 50 days. In July, trapping efficiency of individual bladders was greatest between 1 and 6 days of age and then declined rapidly. Very few traps more than 19 days old could capture prey and most were lost from the leaves within 32 days. The lifespan of traps was closely related to their size and position on the leaves. Because of the rapidity of changes in trap condition with age, trap age is a vital consideration in any studies of the functional ecology of U. vulgaris  相似文献

1. Water-filled ditches are an important ecological feature of lowland Britain. Originally dug to facilitate wetland drainage, ditches often provide refuges for aquatic flora and fauna of high conservation value.
2. The ditches, ponds and major waterways of a traditionally managed undrained fen and the ditches of a previously drained cattle-grazed fen meadow were sampled at Wicken Fen National Nature Reserve for Coleoptera, Mollusca and Odonata, and for physical, chemical and biological variables.
3. Multivariate analysis showed a clear division between ditches on the two fens, and between larger and smaller waterbodies.
4. Individual ditches possessed distinctive faunas. Ditch age and bank profile were important factors influencing faunal species composition.
5. Invertebrate distributions were shown to be significantly correlated with macrophyte distribution.
6. Waterbodies were ranked in terms of their species quality, using a point-scoring system; there was no correlation between rankings for the three invertebrate groups; only ditch age and detritus levels were correlated with species quality score (for Coleoptera).
7. Ditch management recommendations are discussed in the light of these results.  相似文献

The focus of this study was to determine whether coastal wetlands in lowland settings could be dependent on groundwater from the deep circulating confined Table Mountain Group (TMG) aquifer. Groundwater interactions with wetlands are normally perceived to be limited to primary aquifers. A comparative study was done between two endorheic coastal wetlands in the southern Cape. Earlier reports stated that these groundwater dependent wetlands were fed by discharges from the fixed dunes surrounding them. On the basis of a three-dimensional electrical conductivity (EC) interpolation for Groenvlei, a hydrological link between the TMG aquifer and Groenvlei and Van Kervelsvlei was investigated by measuring water level and quality of groundwater and surface water. Water quality parameters used were EC, pH, Na+, Fe2+ and Cl. The results from this, and an accompanying study, on the basis of water quality and plant nutrient cycling assessments, indicated direct groundwater discharges from the TMG to at least Van Kervelsvlei, with Groenvlei receiving secondary discharges from the TMG via Van Kervelslvlei. These findings significantly affect the current knowledge on which water balance models are based for the determination of groundwater availability for the area. Handling editor: D. The changes in both physical and chemical properties of interstitial water were investigated within a large gravel bar to determine if the parafluvial zone was a hotspot for nutrient transformations in a lowland eutrophic river, the Doubs (Eastern France). Interstitial water was sampled in 30 piezometers along five transects across the gravel bar, surface water was sampled in main and chute channels. Five campaigns of sampling were performed among summer and winter. In both interstitial and surface samples, water chemistry (electrical conductivity, pH, chloride, dissolved oxygen concentrations—DO) and nutrient concentrations (nitrate—NO3 , ammonium—NH4 +, soluble reactive phosphorus—SRP, dissolved organic carbon—DOC) were measured. Moreover, temperature, water level, sediment grain size distribution and total bacterial abundance were assessed along a flowpath through a lateral gravel bar of the Doubs River. Measurements of water table elevation in the bar, main and chute channels indicated that the parafluvial flowpath was perpendicular to the main channel. Very low changes in chloride concentration and electrical conductivity showed minor groundwater input along the flowpath. The parafluvial zone was 0.9 m thick under the mean piezometric level, hydraulic gradients along the flowpath were 0.3%, and the discharge of interstitial water through the bar calculated at low flow was 40.6 m3 day−1. Most changes in interstitial nutrients occurred during the warm season, suggesting that biotic mechanisms occurred. Along the flowpath, DO, DOC, and bacterial abundance declined, while phosphate increased. Temporal trends of nitrate were less clear, exhibiting a slight increase during spring (organic matter biodegradation) and a decrease during summer (denitrification). Using the parafluvial discharge and nutrient concentrations of water infiltrating into and seeping from the gravel bar, the retention capacity of the bar was 171 gC day−1 for DOC and 48.3 gN day−1 for nitrate. Phosphate production ranged from 0.65 to 2.3 gP day−1. These values were low compared to the nutrient fluxes in the river Doubs, suggesting a minimal local impact of the parafluvial zone in regulating of river pollution. Handling editor: J. On Wicken Fen and nearby watercourses eastern England, parasitism by cuckoos, Cuculus canorus, declined from 26% and 16% of reed warbler (Acrocephalus scirpaceus) nests in 1985 and 1986, respectively, to 2 to 6% of nests in 1995 to 1997, owing to a decline in cuckoos. Experiments with model eggs showed that over this 12-year period there was a marked decline in host rejection of non-mimetic eggs, from rejection at 75% of reed warbler nests in 1985 to 1986 to 25%, nests in 1997. Calculations suggest that this decline in host defences is too rapid to reflect only genetic change, and is more likely to be the outcome of adaptive phenotypic flexibility. Two other results show flexibility in host responses. First, there was a seasonal decline in rejection, which accompanied the seasonal decline in parasitism. Second, although rejection did not vary with proximity to a naturally parasitized nest within the 3.4km2 of Wicken Fen and its surrounds, there was no rejection at a small unparasitized population 11km away. Flexible host defences will be advantageous when there are costs of rejection as well as short-term temporal changes and small-scale geographical variation in parasitism rate. Other recent studies reporting changes in host defences may also reflect phenotypic flexibility rather than evolutionary change.  相似文献

1. Spatial and temporal variability of relative snow‐melt, glacier‐melt and groundwater contributions to streams play important roles in shaping alpine freshwater ecosystems. Although meltwater (particularly glacier‐fed) streams have received much attention in recent years, the influence of groundwater on alpine freshwater ecosystems remains poorly understood. 2. This study tested the hypotheses that increased groundwater contributions to meltwater‐dominated alpine streams would yield increases in water temperature, channel stability, electrical conductivity and particulate organic matter (POM) and decreases in suspended sediment concentration (SSC). These more favourable habitat conditions were hypothesised to result in increased macroinvertebrate abundance and diversity. 3. Groundwater contributions, physicochemical habitat variables and benthic macroinvertebrates were sampled throughout the 2002 and 2003 summer‐melt seasons in three streams in the French Pyrénées. 4. Increased groundwater contributions were significantly correlated with higher discharge, water temperature, electrical conductivity, POM and channel stability, but lower SSC. 5. Macroinvertebrate total abundance, taxonomic richness, number of Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera and Trichoptera genera, and per cent Plecoptera all increased significantly with greater groundwater contributions to streamflow. However, beta diversity and Trichoptera relative abundance decreased. 6. Abundance of most macroinvertebrate taxa was highest under groundwater‐dominated conditions but a gradient of optimum groundwater preferences was evident across all taxa. Some taxa were found only where groundwater contributions were low (i.e. in predominantly meltwater‐fed streams). 7. This study provides evidence that water source, physicochemical habitat and stream biota are strongly linked. Therefore, an interdisciplinary approach is necessary for future studies aiming to develop conservation strategies or predict the response of alpine river ecosystems to global climate change.  相似文献
