Pacific herring Clupea pallasi spawn in shallow and intertidal areas. Larval distributions and abundance of three major and several minor stocks were examined to determine if larvae mix among different spawning locations. The surveys were short, intensive, and occurred mainly within the first 30 days of larval life. Each major stock had a discrete larval distribution with continuous larval distributions within stock boundaries. Some overlap of distributions occurred among smaller stocks. Most larvae were found in inshore waters but there were no obvious oceanographic factors, such as fronts or eddies, to explain all the distributions. Estuarine circulation in inlets could promote larval retention in some areas. The results support the present geographic definitions for local herring stocks. A qualitative comparison of species compositions, relative abundances, diversity and growth was made between tidal pool fishes collected in Port Renfrew, British Columbia and Bruels Point, California. The two most preponderant cottid species Oligocottus maculosus and Clinocottus globiceps were aged using vertebrae, from which back calculated growth values were obtained. Species from Port Renfrew were found to have a higher diversity index, greater species composition and abundance. No growth differences were found between the two localities despite the 1120 km (700 miles) separating then. 相似文献

ABSTRACT. Distance sampling applied to point count surveys (point transects) has become a common method for estimating the absolute abundance of birds. When conducting point transects, detections of focal species are typically recorded during a fixed time interval. However, count duration has varied among studies and the effect of such variation on the resulting abundance estimates is unclear. My objective was to examine the effect of count duration on abundance estimates of male Black-capped Vireos ( Vireo atricapilla ). The abundance of these vireos in a 349-ha area in central Texas was estimated using 3-, 5-, and 6-min point transects and results were then compared to actual number present as determined by banding and territory mapping. The 3-min counts provided an estimate that was 26% greater than the actual number of male Vireos present ( N = 201), but this number was within the corresponding 95% confidence interval ( N = 157–413). Confidence intervals for the 5- and 6-min counts did not include the actual number of vireos present. The shortest count duration may have provided the most accurate abundance estimate because male Black-capped Vireos are typically active, sing intermittently, and sometimes move tens of meters between songs. Thus, shorter-duration counts may also yield the most accurate abundance estimates for other species that exhibit similar behavior. However, because behavior varies among species, I recommend that investigators collect preliminary data to establish an appropriate count duration when accurate estimates of absolute, rather than relative, abundance are important. 相似文献

Resting tension and short-range elastic properties of isolated twitch muscle fibers of the frog have been studied while bathed by solutions of different tonicities. Resting tension in isotonic solution at 2.3-µm sarcomere spacing averaged 0.46 mN·mm-2 and was proportional to the fiber cross-section area. Hypertonic solutions, containing 0.1–0.5 mM tetracaine to block contracture tension, caused a small sustained tension increase, which was proportional to the fiber cross-section area and which reached 0.9 mN·mm-2 at two times normal tonicity (2T). Further increases in tonicity caused little increase in tension. Hypotonic solutions decreased tension. Thus, tension at 2.3 µm is a continuous, direct function of tonicity. The dependence of tension on tonicity lessened at greater sarcomere lengths. At 3.2 µm either a very small rise or, in some fibers, a fall in tension resulted from an increase in tonicity. Hypertonic solutions also decreased the tension of extended sarcolemma preparations. In constant-speed stretch experiments the elastic modulus, calculated from the initial part of the stretch response, rose steeply with tonicity over the whole range investigated (1–2.5T). The results show that tension and stiffness of the short-range elastic component do not increase in parallel in hypertonic solutions. 相似文献

One of the main factors involved in the decline in the European wild rabbit in the Iberian Peninsula is the loss of suitable habitats caused by abandonment of agricultural and grazing activities. Nowadays, Mediterranean landscapes suffer from wildfires that affect extensive areas and produce considerable habitat changes. However, little is known about the influence of wildfires and post-fire treatments on rabbit abundance to address policies to recover their populations. To do so, we studied abundances of this species in four types of plots during three consecutive years after a wildfire in Catalonia (NE Spain): (A) unburnt forests, (B) burnt forests with removal of burnt trees but with branches left, (C) burnt forests with removal of burnt trees and branches, and (D) non-forested burnt plots. Rabbits progressively colonised burnt plots, where their abundance increased for at least 5 years after the fire, but decreased or even disappeared in unburnt ones, indicating that forest fires have a positive effect on rabbit populations. Although abundances did not differ between the three burnt plot types, plots with removal of burnt branches had the highest increase in abundance. In addition, soil covered by branches or by dense vegetation appeared negatively correlated with abundance, indicating that this could hinder rabbit movements, while some plant species could benefit rabbits by providing high quality food. Thus, post-fire treatments favourable to rabbit populations might therefore be a good way of increasing the conservation and economic value of areas affected by forest fires. 相似文献

Seed limitation may prevent successful restoration of native plant communities. Seed addition is a common restoration practice but the role of small mammals in affecting seedling recruitment is not well understood. The purpose of this investigation was to test the relative effect of seed introduction in combination with small mammal and bird exclosures in an Ohio wet meadow. We ask whether the ambient population of Microtus pennsylvanicus (1) alters species composition (e.g. forb/grass/sedge, invasive, non-native); (2) influences plant diversity; and (3) reduces the effect of increasing local plant richness through seed introductions. We established a 2×2 factorial design including a seed addition treatment (0 and 20 seed species added) and an exclosure treatment (open and fenced to exclude all mammalian and bird herbivores and granivores). Seeds from twenty native species were selected to represent a broad range of plant life forms typically found in temperate eastern North American wet meadow communities. All species were obligate or facultative wetland species with forbs, grasses and sedges represented. We found that forb species increased inside exclosures, especially in the seed addition treatment. We also found that relative biomass of invasive species was reduced in exclosures and with seed addition. Species richness increased with seed addition; however, exclosures significantly increased species richness and diversity, particularly of those species that were experimentally introduced by seed. Our results support the seed limitation hypotheses. It is also evident that seed and seedling predation are important factors that can control wet meadow community composition and diversity. 相似文献

Diel and distributional abundance patterns of free embryos and larvae of fishes in the lower Columbia River Basin were investigated. Ichthyoplankton samples were collected in 1993 during day and night in the main-channel and a backwater of the lower Columbia River, and in a tributary, the Deschutes River. Fish embryos and larvae collected in the main-channel Columbia River were primarily (85.6%) of native taxa (peamouth Mylocheilus caurinus, northern squawfish Ptychocheilus oregonensis, suckers Catostomus spp., and sculpins Cottus spp.), with two introduced species (American shad Alosa sapidissima and common carp Cyprinus carpio) comprising a smaller percentage of the catch (13.3%). Similarly, in the Deschutes River native taxa [lampreys (Petromyzontidae), minnows (Cyprinidae), and suckers Catostomus spp.] dominated collections (99.5% of the catch). In contrast, 83.5% of embryos and larvae in the Columbia River backwater were of introduced taxa [American shad, common carp, and sunfishes (Centrarchidae)]. In all locations, all dominant taxa except sculpins were collected in significantly greater proportions at night. Taxon-specific differences in proportions of embryos and larvae collected at night can in some instances be related to life history styles. In the main-channel Columbia River, northern squawfish and peamouth were strongly nocturnal and high proportions still had yolksacs, suggesting that they had recently hatched and were drifting downriver to rearing areas. In contrast, sculpin abundances were similar during day and night, and sculpins mostly had depleted yolksacs, indicating sculpins were feeding and rearing in offshore limnetic habitats. We studied the influence of dimephosphone, an organophosphorus drug with a broad spectrum of therapeutic effects on the peripheral and central nervous systems, on postsynaptic end-plate currents (EPC) in the frog neuromuscular junction. Dimephosphone was demonstrated to decrease in a voltage-independent manner the EPC amplitude and to prolong the EPC decay. These effects are not related to inhibition of acetylcholinesterase. We propose a theoretical interpretation of the observed phenomena based on the model of blockade of an open ion channel of the acetylcholine receptor and conclude that postsynaptic receptors are one of the most probable targets for the action of dimephosphone. 相似文献

THE frog embryo cell line ICR 2A is the first established haploid vertebrate cell line1. In haploid cells recessive mutations should be detectable at a frequency 106 to 109 times greater than expected in diploid cells; mutagen treatment should increase the yield further. These predictions are useful to test whether variants arising in culture are the result of gene mutation. To apply this test to frog cells, mutations for thymidine kinase were sought. Such mutants were first obtained by exposing mouse L cells to the thymidine analogue 5-bromodeoxyuridine (BUdR); a loss of thymidine kinase activity prevented the lethal incorporation of BUdR into DNA2. The new phenotype was considered to be the result of gene mutation because of its heritability and eventually because of data from Luria-Delbrück fluctuation analyses3 (a test of the spontaneity or non-inducibility of a process, not its cause). The question of origin was further complicated by a number of factors: (1) the necessity of a long, repeated, exposure to BUdR2; (2) the high mutation rate (up to 10?3) compared with bacterial mutants (10?910?6)4,5; and (3) the presence of resistant clones with intermediate enzyme levels4,5. 相似文献

The effects of carbachol (CCh) on the frequency (f) of the miniature endplate potentials were tested at temperatures between 5 and 30°C. Higher CCh concentrations, 1 × 10–5 and 5 × 10–6 M, reduced the f to 60% and the temperature dependence was negligible. However, an inverse temperature dependence was found when low concentrations 3 × 10–7 and 6 × 10–7 M were applied. The depression of f was 40–50% in 5–10°C but only 10–20% of the control in the 25 and 30°C. During application of CCh, the new steady of f was reached at temperatures between 5 and 30°C within 17–20 min (Q10 = 1.07). Much greater temperature dependence of recovery was observed during washing out CCh (Q10 = 1.6). The temperature-independence of the steady state effects of CCh, good agreement with Langmuir adsorption-desorption theory and non-steady kinetics indicate that physical rather than receptor-mediated events are responsible for the depression of f. 相似文献

Experiments were conducted to evaluate strategies designed to reduce heat stress of cattle. In the first experiment, cattle
were sprinkled for 20 min every 1.5 h between 1000 hours and 1750 hours (WET) versus not sprinkled (DRY). In a second experiment,
treatments consisted of: (1) control, no water application; (2) water applied to the pen surfaces between 1000 hours and 1200
hours (AM); and (3) water applied to pen surfaces between 1400 hours and 1600 hours (PM). In both experiments, sprinkling
lowered (P < 0.05) mid-afternoon temperatures. In the first experiment, relative humidity (RH) of WET versus DRY pens differed (P < 0.05) and averaged 72.4 and 68.9%, respectively. The average temperature–humidity index (THI) in WET pens was 0.5 units
lower (P < 0.05), than the THI in DRY pens. In the second experiment, RH in sprinkled pens was also greater (P < 0.05) than RH in control (CON) pens However, THI differed (P < 0.05) among treatments, being 81.5, 80.9, and 80.3, respectively for CON, AM, and PM. Pens with sprinklers had a larger
percentage of steers in areas where sprinkling took place, even on days when sprinkling had not occurred. Based on differences
in percentage of cattle panting in sprinkled and non-sprinkled treatments, sprinkling was found to have a positive effect
on cattle feeding area microclimate and to reduce the susceptibility of cattle to hyperthermia. However, cattle acclimatization
to being sprinkled can result in slight hyperthermia even during cooler days when sprinkling would normally not be utilized. 相似文献
