The present study aimed to investigate the distribution and abundance of fish eggs and larvae in three important tributaries (Chapecó, Peixe, and Ligeiro rivers) of the Upper Uruguay River. The spatial and temporal distribution of fish eggs and larvae were studied as well as the correlation between environmental parameters and the abundance of ichthyoplankton species. The study was conducted between October 2005 and September 2006. Ichthyoplankton samples were collected at night with cylindroconical 0.5-mm mesh plankton nets every 5 days. Of the 591 samples collected, 170 contained ichthyoplankton organisms, resulting in the capture of 12,847 fish eggs and 962 fish larvae. Twenty-seven fish species were observed, of which 69% were Characiforms and 27% were Siluriforms. Among the fish species captured, the representatives were predominantly young forms of small and medium size fishes, with rheophilic species occurring infrequently. Eggs occurred exclusively between October and January, while the highest larvae occurrence was observed between November and December. Fish larvae assemblage structure was shown to be related to some environmental variables. There was a tendency of higher values of water temperature and velocity at the lower sampling sites than at the upper ones, as well an increase number of eggs and larvae. The study tributaries serve as reproduction sites and nursery areas for several fish species of the Upper Uruguay River; thus, the maintenance of their integrity is important for the preservation of diversity and enhancement of fisheries in the region.  相似文献

Management of sustainable Pacific oyster fisheries would be assisted by an early, rapid, and accurate means of detecting their planktonic larvae. Reported here is an approach, based on polymerase chain reaction (PCR), for the detection of Pacific oyster larvae in plankton samples. Species-specific primers were designed by comparing partial mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) sequences from Crassostrea gigas, with other members of the family Ostreidae including those of Crassostrea angulata. Assay specificity was empirically validated through screening DNA samples obtained from several species of oysters. The assay was specific as only C. gigas samples returned PCR-positive results. A nested PCR approach could consistently detect 5 or more D-hinge-stage larvae spiked into a background of about 146 mg of plankton. The assay does not require prior sorting of larvae. We conclude that the assay could be used to screen environmental and ballast water samples, although further specificity testing against local bivalve species is recommended in new locations.  相似文献

The spawning seasons of Caribbean reef fishes   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Observations are recorded on the time of spawning of 83 species of Caribbean reef fishes. Details of seasonal variations in the percentage of sexually active fishes are given for 35 species. The majority of species spawn mostly when water temperatures are minimal, in February, March and April. The expected biomass of reef fish eggs in the plankton is about twelve times greater in the above mentioned period than in the period from June to December. Normal recruitment to insular fisheries may be very greatly dependent upon the success of parent stocks spawning elsewhere in the Caribbean and the abundance of recruits to a particular area may be dependent upon the speed and direction of the prevailing currents which carry larvae and juveniles to the insular shelves.  相似文献

Fish larvae and fish eggs were sampled from the inshore waters of eastern Lake Michigan from 1978 through 1980, using a benthic sled and a plankton net towed within 0.5 m of the lake bottom. Differences between estimates of ichthyoplankton abundance based on the benthic sled and those based on the plankton net towed near bottom were examined along with interactions between gear, bottom depth, and time of day. Time of day was determined to be an important factor in comparing these two gear, but data were inconclusive as to the effect of depth on gear differences. Abundance of fish eggs calculated using sled tow data was significantly higher than that for the plankton net. For nighttime collections, density of alewife Alosa pseudoharengus larvae sampled in the plankton net significantly exceeded that for the sled, whereas density of spottail shiner Notropis hudsonius larvae based on sled data was significantly higher than that based on the plankton net for day sampling. Overall, the plankton net appeared to be adequate for sampling abundance of alewife larvae, while the sled was preferred for sampling fish eggs, spottail shiner larvae, and the following less common, but apparently demersal larvae: trout-perch Percopsis omiscomaycus, johnny darter Etheostoma nigrum, ninespine stickleback Pungitius pungitius, and slimy sculpin Cottus cognatus.  相似文献

In order to protect the diverse ecosystems of coastal California, a series of marine protected areas (MPAs) have been established. The ability of these MPAs to preserve and potentially enhance marine resources can only be assessed if these habitats are monitored through time. This study establishes a baseline for monitoring the spawning activity of fish in the MPAs adjacent to Scripps Institution of Oceanography (La Jolla, CA, USA) by sampling fish eggs from the plankton. Using vertical plankton net tows, 266 collections were made from the Scripps Pier between 23 August 2012 and 28 August 2014; a total of 21,269 eggs were obtained. Eggs were identified using DNA barcoding: the COI or 16S rRNA gene was amplified from individual eggs and sequenced. All eggs that were successfully sequenced could be identified from a database of molecular barcodes of California fish species, resulting in species-level identification of 13,249 eggs. Additionally, a surface transport model of coastal circulation driven by current maps from high frequency radar was used to construct probability maps that estimate spawning locations that gave rise to the collected eggs. These maps indicated that currents usually come from the north but water parcels tend to be retained within the MPA; eggs sampled at the Scripps Pier have a high probability of having been spawned within the MPA. The surface transport model also suggests that although larvae have a high probability of being retained within the MPA, there is also significant spillover into nearby areas outside the MPA. This study provides an important baseline for addressing the extent to which spawning patterns of coastal California species may be affected by future changes in the ocean environment.  相似文献

Summary

There is a latitudinal gradient in the species richness of Decapoda with pelagic larvae. For example, only two species of Brachyura are found around Svalbard, 54 species are known from the English Channel and ~100 from the Atlantic coast of the Iberian peninsula. The distributions of many species are limited by effects of temperature. Intermoult times of larvae are inversely related to temperature. In the field the size of larvae is inversely related to temperature, the relationship tending to increase in significance in successive larval stages. The timing of the seasonal occurrence of larvae of decapod species in the plankton is also related to temperature, to a greater extent than are seasonal cycles of the holoplankton. These effects of temperature on larval development influence the biomass and production of the larvae in the plankton. Some potential effects of climate change on the distributions and dynamics of planktonic larvae of decapods and consequent changes in their diversity, biomass and production can be predicted insofar as temperature is a limiting factor.  相似文献

Planktotrophic larvae grow by utilizing energy obtained from food gathered in the plankton. Morphological plasticity of feeding structures has been demonstrated in multiple phyla, in which food-limited larvae increase feeding structure size to increase feeding rates. However, before larvae can feed exogenously they depend largely on material contained within the egg to build larval structures and to fuel larval metabolism. Thus, the capacity for plasticity of feeding structures early in development may depend on egg size. Using the congeneric sea urchins Strongylocentrotus franciscanus and S. purpuratus, which differ in egg volume by 5-fold, I tested whether the degree of expression of feeding structure (larval arm length) plasticity is correlated with differences in the size of the egg. I experimentally manipulated egg size of S. franciscanus (the larger-egged species) by separating blastomeres at the 2-cell stage to produce half-sized larvae. I reared half-size and normal-size larvae under high and low food treatments for 20 days. I measured arm and body lengths at multiple ages during development and calculated the degree of plasticity expressed by larvae from all treatments. Control and unmanipulated S. franciscanus larvae (from ∼ 1.0 nl eggs) had significantly longer arms relative to body size and a significantly greater degree of plasticity than half-sized S. franciscanus larvae (from < 0.18 nl eggs), which in turn expressed a significantly greater degree of plasticity than S. purpuratus larvae (from ∼ 0.3 nl eggs). These results indicate that egg size affects larval arm length plasticity in the genus Strongylocentrotus; larger eggs produce more-plastic larvae both in an experimental and a comparative context. However, changes in egg size alone are not sufficient to account for evolved differences in the pattern of plasticity expressed by each species over time and may not be sufficient for the evolutionary transition from feeding to non-feeding.  相似文献

Species composition and quantitative distribution of ichthyoplankton in the region of the oceanic seamounts of the Azores complex from 2000 to 2004 are considered. The spawning biomass of the main fishery item of this region—Atlantic jack Trachurus picturatus—is calculated. The ichthyoplankton of the Azores seamounts in the period under consideration included eggs and larvae of 60 fish species from 26 families. In the summer, 20 species of eggs and larvae from 11 families and, in winter, 57 species from 24 families were recorded. Larval Myctophidae and Gonastomatidae have the most mass in the plankton in both seasons. The eggs and larvae of commercial fish species (T. picturatus and Pacific mackerel Scomber japonicus) were recorded mainly in the cold period. The species and quantitative composition of ichthyoplankton of the South Azores seamounts is far more numerous than in the North Azores seamounts. The region of the seamounts of the South Azores complex, judging from the estimation of biomass of commercial fish with different methods, can be regarded as a reserve for the fishery of Russian vessels in the central eastern Atlantic.  相似文献

We collected eggs and larvae of the Japanese temperate bass, Lateolabrax japonicus, and present horizontal and temporal changes of distribution relative to development and growth during the species pelagic life history in Ariake Bay. Sampling was conducted from the inner to central region (11 sampling stations) of Ariake Bay using a plankton net (80 cm diameter, 0.5-mm mesh) from November 2000 to February 2001. Both eggs and larvae were collected most abundantly in mid-December. The CPUE of eggs in the surface layer was higher than the middle layer, which is in contrast to that at the larval stage. Most eggs were collected around the central and western regions of the bay. The distribution of eggs shifted vertically to the middle layer with development. Yolk-sac larvae were collected in the central region of the bay, and preflexion and flexion larvae were more abundantly collected in the inner region of the bay. The body length of larvae around the inner bay was larger than in the central region. The pelagic life history can be summarized as follows: eggs are distributed around the central region of the bay and eggs and larvae expand their distribution to the inner and shallower waters with growth. We conclude that the shift of vertical distribution in pelagic stages and the hydrographic features of the middle layer form one of the mechanisms enabling the inshore migration of L. japonicus.  相似文献

The study of spatial and temporal distribution and diversity of ichthyoplankton (fish eggs and larvae) can provide fisheries-independent information on the population dynamics and recruitment processes of marine fish species. Ichthyoplankton studies in the Southern Ocean have to date been largely constrained to the summer months. We analysed ichthyoplankton data collected from a year round, long term (2002–2008), plankton trawl sampling programme in a large fjord system (Cumberland Bay) at South Georgia, sub-Antarctic (54.25°S, 36.5°W) to assess temporal changes in larval fish diversity and abundance. Larvae of 22 species, representing nine families, were identified although three, Krefftichthys anderssoni (Myctophidae), Lepidonotothen nudifrons/Trematomus hansoni (Nototheniidae) and Champsocephalus gunnari (Channichthyidae), dominated abundance in all years. Significant seasonal and interannual differences in the larval fish assemblage were revealed by multivariate analyses. Estimates of larval growth are provided for five abundant species. Considerable inter-specific differences in relative larval growth rate were recorded but interannual variability within species was small. However, in the commercially important C. gunnari, multiple larval cohorts, representing a protracted spawning season, were observed to grow at different rates, and this may be related to temperature and/or food availability. A comparison with historical growth data from South Georgia suggests there has been little change in growth rate for the main species over the last three decades.  相似文献

Understanding phenotypic diversity requires not only identification of selective factors that favor origins of derived states, but also factors that favor retention of primitive states. Anurans (frogs and toads) exhibit a remarkable diversity of reproductive modes that is unique among terrestrial vertebrates. Here, we analyze the evolution of these modes, using comparative methods on a phylogeny and matched life‐history database of 720 species, including most families and modes. As expected, modes with terrestrial eggs and aquatic larvae often precede direct development (terrestrial egg, no tadpole stage), but surprisingly, direct development evolves directly from aquatic breeding nearly as often. Modes with primitive exotrophic larvae (feeding outside the egg) frequently give rise to direct developers, whereas those with nonfeeding larvae (endotrophic) do not. Similarly, modes with eggs and larvae placed in locations protected from aquatic predators evolve frequently but rarely give rise to direct developers. Thus, frogs frequently bypass many seemingly intermediate stages in the evolution of direct development. We also find significant associations between terrestrial reproduction and reduced clutch size, larger egg size, reduced adult size, parental care, and occurrence in wetter and warmer regions. These associations may help explain the widespread retention of aquatic eggs and larvae, and the overall diversity of anuran reproductive modes.  相似文献

Taiaro Atoll Lagoon is normally isolated from the ocean, but at least 125 marine fish species of 31 families are present there. We sampled fish larvae in Taiaro Lagoon and the nearby ocean in February 1994 with plankton net, neuston net and light trap to investigate which taxa were completing their life cycles in the lagoon. Concentrations of fish eggs and larvae were very high in the lagoon indicating intense spawning, but larvae of only 18 taxa of 10 families were present. Only six, a callionymid, gobiids, a hemiramphid, a microdesmid, and two pomacentrids, were present across a full range of pelagic sizes, and were clearly completing their pelagic stage in the lagoon. Four other taxa, an apogonid, two labrids and a scarid, were common, but the largest individuals were small (<5 mm) postflexion larvae. These may have been completing their pelagic stage in the lagoon. The remaining lagoonal larvae (eight taxa) were rare and at the preflexion stage, so we could only conclude that they hatched from eggs spawned in the lagoon. Nineteen taxa of 15 families found as adults in the lagoon were present outside the lagoon as larvae, but not inside, suggesting that they may not normally complete their life cycles in the lagoon. Horizontal distributions of larvae in the lagoon are apparently due to the interaction of larval vertical distribution behaviour with a wind-driven countercurrent system. The potential of the leaf beetle Charidotis auroguttata as a biocontrol agent for cat’s claw creeper Macfadyena unguis-cati (Bignoniaceae), an environmental weed in Australia, and risk to non-target plants was evaluated under quarantine conditions. In no-choice tests, C. auroguttata adults and larvae fed on many plant species across different families, but egg to adult development occurred only on the target weed. However, when neonate larvae from the target weed were transferred onto Myoporum boninense australe (Myoporaceae), a non-target native plant, 11.7% completed development, as compared to 95% of larvae that completed development on the target weed. Larval development on this non-target species also took twice as long as on the target weed. No larvae completed development on other test plants. In choice tests, leaf area consumption by adults and larvae was significantly more on the target weed than on other plants, and oviposition occurred only on the target weed. In the no-choice demography trials, adults laid eggs from the second week after emergence on the target weed, with an average of 0.286 eggs/female/day, resulting in an 18-fold increase in the adult population over 16 weeks. On My. boninense australe adult survival remained high, but oviposition commenced only from the 10th week after emergence with an average of 0.023 eggs/female/day, and none of the eggs developed into adults. In the choice demography trials, oviposition on the target weed was evident from the fourth week onwards, while on the non-target plant oviposition commenced only from the 14th week. Only 10% of total adults and 11.3% of total eggs were found on the non-target plant, and none of these eggs developed into adults. Although the biocontrol agent can ‘spill-over’ from the target weed to the non-target native plant and cause adult feeding damage, the non-target plant could not sustain a viable insect population on its own. This agent was not approved for field release in Australia due to perceived risk to non-target species.  相似文献

Data on species composition, spatial distribution of ichthyoplankton, and feeding of fish larvae in August 2011 are presented for the shelf and the open waters along the Crimean Peninsula from Kerch Strait to Karkinit Bay. In the ichthyoplankton, fish eggs and larvae represented 19 species from 16 families. The average egg abundance was 111 egg/m2 and larvae abundance was 22 ind./m2. The elimination ratio of the European anchovy Engraulis encrasicolus, which dominates in the plankton from the final stages of development to the prelarvae in 2011, was similar to that observed in 1957. The high number of larvae of the older age group in the western halistatic zone is explained by the peculiarities of the hydrological regime. Decrease in the pressure of predatory jelly macroplankton and an fodder zooplankton (zooplankton abundance) contribute to the survival of the fish larvae.  相似文献

The actual Arctic biota shows a strong affinity with that of the Boreal Atlantic and Pacific ones, as a result of an active recolonization process after the Quaternary glaciations. The geographic distribution of sessile species is usually linked to larvae dispersive capabilities which can be directly related with time spent in the plankton. Ascidians larvae are lecitothorphic and short-lived, which suggest that ascidians could be not efficient dispersers. However, the solitary ascidian Styela rustica (Linnaeus, 1767) (Tunicata, Ascidiacea) shows a wide distribution pattern from the North Atlantic to the Arctic that, together with the relatively recent colonization of the Arctic system could indicate that this species efficiently disperses and colonizes new habitats. In this study we used ISSR-PCR markers to study the genetic structure of five populations of the ascidian Styela rustica at Kongsfjorden, west Spitsbergen (Svalbard archipelago). We analyzed whether this species presents a low genetic structure, as can be expected due to the historical process of recent post glaciations colonization, or if there is genetic differentiation at a local scale, caused by short-lived larvae and limited dispersal potential. The genetic diversity in each population assessed using the marker diversity index (M) ranged from 0.288 to 0.324. Population HN, situated close to a fast retreating glacier, showed the lowest diversity. Processes associated with deglatiation (icebergs calving from the glacier that scour the benthos and the increment of inorganic particulate matter on the water column) would drive to reduced population sizes and explain the reduced genetic variability observed in the HN population with respect to the others in the fjord. This suggests a possible linkage with the global warming process. Although the weak genetic structure found among the studied populations could indicate a founder effect, the genetic landscape shape analysis together with a positive relationship between genetic and geographic distances also suggest possible current gene flow among populations in the fjord.  相似文献

The capacity to reliably identify fish eggs is critical in the application of the daily egg production method (DEPM) to estimate biomass of commercially important species. This application has largely been confined to species that have easily identifiable eggs. Various molecular strategies have been used to extend the DEPM to a broader range of species, with recent approaches like in situ hybridization (ISH) that preserves the integrity of whole eggs, embryos or larvae recommended as a suitable alternative over destructive procedures like PCR. Here, we designed and validated an ISH approach for the identification of whole eggs and larvae from Snapper (Chrysophrys auratus) from environmental samples using the mitochondrial 16S rRNA gene as a target for specific horseradish peroxidase (HRP)‐conjugated oligonucleotide probes. This colorimetric assay allowed the highly specific detection of positive hybridization signals from intact C. auratus larvae and eggs from mixed‐species samples comprising closely related taxa. Furthermore, evaluation of whole eggs across a range of developmental stages revealed the sensitivity of the approach for discerning early stages, thereby guiding staging and the identification of otherwise indistinguishable eggs from environmental samples. This approach represents a major advance from current molecular‐based strategies as it is nondestructive and allows for the simultaneous identification and staging of fish eggs (and larvae). The resultant 100% egg identification certainty we have achieved allows the DEPM to be applied to a wider array of fish species and is particularly applicable to species in areas where morphologically similar eggs are being spawned at the same time.  相似文献

Summary Terrestrial oviposition with free-living aquatic larvae is a common reproductive mode used by amphibians within the central Amazonian rainforest. We investigated the factors presently associated with diversity of microhabitats (waterbodies) that may be maintaining the diversity of reproductive modes. In particular, desiccation, predation by fish, competition with other anurans and water quality were examined in 11 waterbodies as possible forces leading to the evolution of terrestrial oviposition. Predation experiments demonstrated that fish generally do not eat anuran eggs, and that predacious tadpoles and dytiscid beetle larvae are voracious predators of anuran eggs. The percentage of species with terrestrial oviposition was only weakly correlated with the occurrence of pond drying, pH and oxygen concentration, suggesting that anurans in this tropical community are able to use the range of water quality available for egg development. There was a tendency for terrestrial oviposition to be associated with the number of species of tadpoles using the waterbody, but we consider this to be spurious as there was no obvious competitive mechanism that could result in this relationship. The percentage of species with terrestrial oviposition was significantly positively related to our index of egg predation pressure, and negatively related to our index of fish biomass. Egg predation pressure was also negatively related to the index of fish biomass. These results allow us to discount as improbable the hypothesis that predation by fish on anuran eggs was an important selective pressure leading to terrestrial oviposition in this community. The strong positive relationship between terrestrial oviposition and our index of egg predation pressure indicates that these predators have exerted, and are exerting, a significant selective pressure for terrestrial oviposition. The strong negative relationship between the occurrence of fish and the egg predators suggests the surprising conclusion that the presence of fish actually protects aquatic anuran eggs from predation in this tropical system, and allows aquatic oviposition to dominate only in those waterbodies with moderate to high densities of fish. Our results suggest that terrestrial oviposition is a fixed predator avoidance trait.  相似文献

1. Abundant mid-trophic pelagic fish often play a central role in marine ecosystems, both as links between zooplankton and top predators and as important fishery targets. In the North Sea, the lesser sandeel occupies this position, being the main prey of many bird, mammal and fish predators and the target of a major industrial fishery. However, since 2003, sandeel landings have decreased by > 50%, and many sandeel-dependent seabirds experienced breeding failures in 2004. 2. Despite the major economic implications, current understanding of the regulation of key constituents of this ecosystem is poor. Sandeel abundance may be regulated 'bottom-up' by food abundance, often thought to be under climatic control, or 'top-down' by natural or fishery predation. We tested predictions from these two hypotheses by combining unique long-term data sets (1973-2003) on seabird breeding productivity from the Isle of May, SE Scotland, and plankton and fish larvae from the Continuous Plankton Recorder survey. We also tested whether seabird breeding productivity was more tightly linked to sandeel biomass or quality (size) of individual fish. 3. The biomass of larval sandeels increased two- to threefold over the study period and was positively associated with proxies of the abundance of their plankton prey. Breeding productivity of four seabirds bringing multiple prey items to their offspring was positively related to sandeel larval biomass with a 1-year lag, indicating dependence on 1-year-old fish, but in one species bringing individual fish it was strongly associated with the size of adult sandeels. 4. These links are consistent with bottom-up ecosystem regulation and, with evidence from previous studies, indicate how climate-driven changes in plankton communities can affect top predators and potentially human fisheries through the dynamics of key mid-trophic fish. However, the failing recruitment to adult sandeel stocks and the exceptionally low seabird breeding productivity in 2004 were not associated with low sandeel larval biomass in 2003, so other mechanisms (e.g. predation, lack of suitable food after metamorphosis) must have been important in this case. Understanding ecosystem regulation is extremely important for predicting the fate of keystone species, such as sandeels, and their predators.  相似文献
