The present experiments were undertaken to confirm the recent suggestion that epidermal growth factor (EGF) can have both retarding and accelerating effects on development, using a greater number of developmental indices than hitherto; to extend such studies to another species, the golden hamster, and to compare the responses of males and females. On each of days 0-3, one male and one female rat pup from each of 16 litters of 6 pups were injected subcutaneously with human EGF (0.5 micrograms/g body weight), one male and one female with vehicle, and the remaining two pups were not injected. As expected, EGF accelerated incisor eruption and eye-opening. However, EGF retarded the detachment of the pinna and the appearance of the auditory startle response. Free-fall righting was little affected. Hamster litters were left undisturbed till day 7 to minimise infanticide. Thereafter, experimental design was as far as possible the same as for the rats. Pups from 18 litters were injected on days 7-10. EGF advanced eye-opening, but retarded auditory startling, vaginal opening and the weaning growth spurt. Free-fall righting was unaffected. Hence, EGF had similar accelerating and retarding effects on development in both rats and hamsters. Also, these effects were the same in males and females for most indices.  相似文献

Thirty-nine pregnant adult Wistar strain rats were randomly assigned to one of three exposure groups: 0, 0.75, or 1.50 Gy X-radiation total exposure. Animals were exposed from the 14th to the 18th days of gestation at 0, 0.15, or 0.30 Gy per day. At term, 15 rats were killed and morphologic analyses were completed. Twenty-four rats were allowed to deliver their offspring. On the first day of postnatal life, litters were reduced to a maximum of eight pups per litter, with equal numbers of male and female offspring wherever possible. A total of 187 pups were observed for the age of acquisition of five reflexes (air righting, surface righting, visual placing, negative geotaxis, auditory startle) and the appearance of four physiologic markers (pinna detachment, eye opening, vaginal opening, testes descent). There was significant dose-related weight reduction in term fetuses and offspring throughout the 86-day postnatal period. Postnatal growth rate (g gained/day) was unaffected. Adult offspring brain and gonadal weight and organ weight:body weight ratios were reduced. Using the PAC50 methodology, dose-related alterations occurred in the acquisition of several reflexes. All physiologic markers exhibited a dose-related delay in appearance. These results indicate that fractionated exposure to X-radiation during the fetal period in the rat results in dose-dependent alterations in postnatal growth and physiologic development. These studies are important for our understanding of the long-range effects of prenatal exposure to ionizing radiation late in gestation.  相似文献

Interaction among genetic line, sex, age and body weight was studied for biological sexual maturation in rats. In female rats vaginal opening, first estrus, and duration of estrus cycle were determined. In male rats first presence of sperm was determined. Age and body weight at vaginal opening, first estrus or first detection of sperm were determined. Differences among five genetic lines were found on all measures of sexual maturation. The random bred control rats differed from the selectively bred lines of rats on majority of the measures, thus suggesting the influence of selective breeding on sexual maturation. The Maudsley lines selected for open-field defecation and Roman lines selected for two-way active avoidance learning showed different patterns of sexual maturation. Age was found to be crucial for the sexual maturation of female rats, whereas body weight was more important for the sexual maturation of male rats. This study is the first to investigate systematically the biological sexual maturation in live male rats and related sex differences. Findings suggest an important genetic component, and effect of selective breeding on the biological sexual maturation of rats.  相似文献

Experiments were designed to examine the influence of adult males on the rate of sexual maturation in young female wild mice. In one experiment, young females were raised in presence of adult males, adult females and in absence of any individual, while in another, they were exposed to urines of: (1) castrated males, (2) spayed females, (3) castrated and TP-treated males, (4) castrated and placebo-injected males. Female maturation as measured by age at vaginal opening and first vaginal oestrus was accelerated by presence of adult males, whereas presence of adult females considerably delayed the vaginal opening and the appearance of first oestrus in young females. In the other set of the experiments, urine from castrated or castrated and placebo-injected males was ineffective in inducing early puberty while urine from spayed females highly delayed the sexual maturation. By contrast, urine from castrated and TP-treated males accelerated the puberty more or less like normal males. The results indicate that male's chemosignal accelerating puberty in young females is present in urine and its production is under the control of androgens. However, the female-originating urinary pheromone which delays the puberty in young females is not regulated by ovarian hormones.  相似文献

Seventy pregnant adult Wistar strain rats were randomly assigned to 1 of 12 exposure groups; 9th or 17th day irradiation at the 0-, 0.1-, 0.2-, 0.4-, 0.6-, or 0.8-Gy dosage level. On the first day of postnatal life, litters were reduced to a maximum of eight pups per litter. A total of 508 pups were observed for the age of acquisition of five reflexes (air righting, surface righting, visual placing, negative geotaxis, auditory startle) and the appearance of four physiologic markers (pinna detachment, eye opening, vaginal opening, testes descent). A dose-response relationship for alterations in reflex acquisition and physiologic marker appearance was observed due to exposure above 0.2 Gy on the 17th day of gestation. Therefore, 0.2 to 0.4-Gy exposure may represent a threshold range for exposure on the 17th day using these postnatal parameters.  相似文献

50年代以来,国际上相继开展了一些关于化学信息在小家鼠繁殖中作用的研究,并在实验室中揭示了一些反应:如集群雌鼠气味使雌鼠性周期延长的Lee-Boot效应,雌鼠气味能解除集群雌鼠对性周期的抑制、并促使它们同期发情的Whitten效应,以及陌生雄鼠气味中断妊娠的Bruce效应等等。但是,在成鼠间起作用的几种化学信息,是否能被幼鼠感受,对幼鼠的发育和性成熟是否产生影响,还是一个未知的问题。 影响小鼠发育的因素很多,除环境因子外,近来还出现了有关社群因素中外激素对小鼠性成熟影响的报道,发现雄鼠或给予雄激素的雌鼠有促进幼雌鼠性成熟的作用,范志勤发现父本气味和陌生雄鼠气味对幼雌鼠性成熟均有促进作用。但是,目前关于种内雌鼠气味、集群雌鼠气味、幼鼠气味影响性成熟的研究尚不多见。有关各种气味对性成熟效应的比较的报道亦少。本文的目的在于通过实验方法,阐明种内的几种化学信息,诸如父本、陌生雄性、雌性、集群雌性、幼雌等几种气味,对幼雌小鼠性成熟的影响,并据此了解幼鼠识别这几种信息的能力。  相似文献

The experiments examined the timing, duration and possible enhancement effects of group contact on the delay of sexual maturation produced in prepubertal female house mice by urine from grouped females. One or three days of pheromone stimulation at specified ages during the first 2 weeks after weaning was not sufficient to delay puberty in females caged singly. However, pheromone treatment for 7 days, beginning during the first week after weaning, did significantly delay the onset of first vaginal oestrus relative to control females treated with water. Both the timing and duration of pheromone stimulation appear to be critical factors affecting pheromone-induced delay of sexual maturation. Mean ages at first oestrus for females housed with a group of 7 other females, for 3 or 7 days at specified ages during the first 2 weeks after weaning, did not differ from mean ages recorded with urine stimulation only. Contact with other females does not appear to alter or enhance the delay-of-maturation effect achieved with urine stimulation. In all these respects the maturation-delay pheromone of grouped female mice appears to differ from the puberty-accelerating pheromone of male mice.  相似文献

Age at maturity, a particularly important parameter in the life history of small mammals, contributes greatly to fitness. Social influences on age at maturity have been demonstrated for altricial rodents, in particular, mice. Nothing is known about such effects in precocial small mammals. Wild cavies Cavia aperea are born in a highly precocial state and mature early in life, briefly after weaning. We investigated whether the wild cavy C. aperea and the domestic guinea-pig Cavia aperea f. porcellus reach maturity earlier in the presence of adults of the opposite sex. Juvenile females kept in pairs without males showed first vaginal opening (=oestrus) when 59 days old in cavies and at about 40 days in the guinea-pig. However, in the company of adult males, cavy females kept in pairs reached maturity when about 30 days old, and guinea-pig females when 26 days old. Most cavy females experienced successful pregnancy following first vaginal opening. In cavies, female mass at birth and at first oestrus was not correlated with age at first oestrus. In guinea-pigs, birth mass predicted age at maturity only when a male was present. The growth rate from birth to first oestrus related to age at first oestrus. In the wild cavy, the presence of a male appeared to influence maturation more between days 25 and 30 than earlier in life. Male C. aperea matured and had fully descended testes when about 65–70 days old. All male cavies produced abundant motile sperm from day 75. First successful copulations occurred at about the same age. Surprisingly, the priming effect of the presence of an adult male on female maturation proved stronger in these highly precocial caviomorphs than in altricial rodents investigated so far.  相似文献

This research reports analyses of correlated response in reproductive onset in ICR mice after 23 generations of restricted index selection for divergent body weight gain, early (birth-10 days) or later (28-56 days) in life. Long-term selection altered growth trajectories and 56 day body weight of individuals under different selection regimes in this study. Mice in lines under early selection have the same percentage mature weight at vaginal opening as controls (63%). Vaginal opening is delayed in mice selected for slow early growth, which take longer to reach what appears to be a weight threshold. In contrast, individuals in lines selected for later slow growth undergo vaginal opening at the same age as controls, but at a lower weight and increased percentage mature weight. Pre-compensation or 'counter-balance growth' is observed in these lines, with mice selected for late enhanced growth reaching 52% of mature weight at vaginal opening while mice with late slow growth attain 71% of mature weight prior to vaginal opening. Only 42% of mice with late slow growth attain first oestrus by 56 days. We speculate this is a function of growth rate and fat/lean ratio. Mice with early slow growth show compensatory growth, reaching first oestrus at a similar time to controls. We conclude that selection for growth rate has asymmetrically affected reproductive onset, with lines selected for suppressed gains experiencing delays in the reproductive onset traits measured.  相似文献

delta-9-Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the major psychoactive component of marihuana, retarded sexual maturation in the pubertal female rat as indicated by a delayed appearance of estrus and ovulation. Twice daily intraperitoneal injections of 10 mg THC/kg body weight from 27 days of age until the first day of full vaginal cornification delayed the onset of estrus and the occurrence of the first ovulation by an average of 4.3 +/- 0.9 (S.E.M.) days in comparison with pair-fed, vehicle-treated animals (p less than 0.001). Ovulation during the first estrus occurred in 92% of the animals in each treatment group without a difference in the average number of ova ovulated. The delayed sexual maturation in animals treated with THC could not be attributed to reduced body weight gain since body weights in THC- and vehicle-treated groups were equivalent when vehicle-treated animals came into estrus. Delayed ovulation in THC-treated animals did not merely reflect the repeated blockade of ovulation from otherwise competent follicles in that the onset of vaginal cornification was delayed to a comparable extent. Rather, the data suggest retarded development of ovarian follicles, possibly as a result of pituitary suppression. It is noteworthy that, although delayed, both vaginal cornification and ovulation occurred in spite of continued THC treatment, suggesting the development of drug tolerance.  相似文献

The influence of administration of adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH) during days 12-17 of pregnancy upon somatic, neurological, and neuromuscular development of offspring in mice was studied. The effects upon the onset of puberty in female offspring was also examined. Litters from mice given the higher of two doses of ACTH (1 IU/day or 8 IU/day) showed lower body weights at birth and weaning than controls. This treatment also increased pre- and postnatal mortality rates, although not significantly. Litters from mice treated with either dose of ACTH showed retarded development of the forelimb and hindlimb grasp reflexes, the body righting reflex, the auditory startle response, and eye opening. Although ear opening was delayed in litters from ACTH-treated mice, results did not achieve statistical significance. Study of female offspring housed in small groups revealed that one indicator of puberty, vaginal opening, was delayed in female offspring of ACTH-treated mice. Experiments were conducted to identify factors mediating this syndrome: ACTH did not depress maternal food intake or alter the length of pregnancy, therefore fetal undernutrition or premature birth can be excluded as mediating factors. All litters were fostered to untreated mice to control for postnatal factors influencing development. As ACTH cannot cross the placenta, the syndrome is likely to result from in utero exposure to abnormally high concentrations of glucocorticosteroids of maternal origin. It is concluded that such alterations to the fetal environment can exert a deleterious influence upon somatic, neurological, and sexual development, and that hormones of the maternal pituitary-adrenocortical axis may naturally act to regulate general development of the fetus.  相似文献

Vaginal prolapse is the protrusion of edematous vaginal tissue into and through the opening of the vulva occurring during the pro-oestrus and oestrus stages of the sexual cycle. True vaginal prolapse may occur near parturition, as the concentration of serum progesterone declines and the concentration of serum oestrogen increases. In a bitch, true vaginal prolapse is a very rare condition. This case report describes an 18-month-old crossbreed bitch, weighing 40 kg presented with type III vaginal prolapse. The patient had developed vaginal prolapse after receiving oestrogen in order to oestrus induction. Subsequent to unsuccessful attempts for repositioning, ovariohysterectomy (OHE), circumferential excision of the prolapsed tissue and finally vulvoplasty were performed. There was no evidence of recurrence of the prolapse during 30 days after surgery. This case report describes type III vaginal prolapse as an unusual side effect of oestrus induction hormonal therapy in the bitch.  相似文献

In a series of experiments the development of sexual behavior was studied in female rats. Lordosis behavior in response to manual stimulation was induced in 100% of 19-day old females by treatment with 10 μgm estradiol benzoate (EB) and 0.5 mgm progesterone (P) and earwiggling was displayed at earlier ages. During normal development, vaginal opening preceded the display of the first receptivity in most cases, the first two behavioral sex cycles tended to be prolonged and irregular, but the subsequent cycles were of regular 4 or 5 days duration. Although treatment of immature (18-, 23- or 28-day old) females with EB (10 μgm) and P (0.5 mgm) or with EB (0.025, 0.25 or 2.5 μgm until vaginal opening occurred) resulted in precocious vaginal opening and display of sexual receptivity, the treatment did not advance the development of behavioral cyclicity. Progesterone [0.25 mgm/100 gm body weight (bw)] facilitated the display of sexual receptivity in EB-primed (0.5 or 2.5 μgm/100 gm bw) ovariectomized immature and adult female rats. Evidence was presented that behavioral sensitivity to estrogen increases with age.  相似文献

The sexual maturation of male mice reared under constant laboratory conditions was studied in animals born in different months of the year. The body weights were significantly affected by the month of birth. Males born in March and May were heavier at 4 and 5 weeks of age than those born in autumn and winter. As indicated by the relative weights of accessory glands, males born in spring matured earlier compared with animals born in other months of the year. Variation in the relative testicular weights during maturation was not influenced by the month of birth. Female mice also showed a significant relationship between the month of birth and sexual maturation. Females born in March reached puberty, as measured by the age of vaginal opening and first oestrus, earlier than those born in other months of the year.  相似文献

Body weight, growth rate, chronological age and puberty in female and male rats from litters of 8 and 12 offsprings/mother have been studied. Age and body weight at the moment of vaginal opening (VO) and balanopreputial separation (BPS) were analyzed. Results show that animals reared in smaller groups grew faster than others. After weaning there was an increase in growth rate. VO and BPS occurred at the same age in groups with different growth rates and different body weights. In conclusion this work evidences that external signs of sexual maturation are not linked to a "critical weight" or to a "growth rate".  相似文献

Age at sexual maturation among female cotton rats was measured in a variety of intraspecific social environments. Two experiments were conducted. In Experiment I, female cotton rats attained vaginal perforation and first estrus at younger ages and lighter body masses when paired from weaning with a conspecific juvenile male than when caged alone. In Experiment II, these findings were replicated and extended. Females housed with juvenile males matured at the youngest ages, while those housed alone matured at the oldest ages. Females housed with adult males matured at intermediate ages. Presence of a second juvenile female during maturation was significantly associated with early vaginal opening but not with early first estrus. The results of this study are discussed in context of similar social environmental effects on female sexual maturation that have been identified in other rodent species.  相似文献

Vaginal smears and blood samples were taken throughout the reproductive cycle of female Galago c. crassicaudatus. Blood plasma was assayed for oestradiol and progesterone, and vaginal smears were initially classified dioestrus or vaginal oestrus. During vaginal oestrus the females were tested daily for sexual receptivity by being placed with a male. Those days on which the male achieved intromission were reclassified as behavioural oestrus. During dioestrus the females were tested weekly with males. Female receptivity increased and then declined across a 6-day period of behavioural oestrus during the 44-day cycle. Fully cornified smears were characteristic of the period of maximal receptivity and oestradiol secretion. The luteal phase lasted 24 days with a plasma progesterone peak midway through dioestrus.  相似文献

Pregnant Swiss albino mice were exposed to 0.3, 0.5, 1.0, or 1.5 Gy of gamma radiation on day 17 of gestation. Sham-exposed controls were examined for comparison. Exposed mice as well as controls were left to complete gestation and parturition. Pups were observed up to age 6 weeks; appearance of physiological markers (pinna detachment, eye opening, fur development, vaginal opening, and testes descent), postnatal mortality, body weight, body length, head length, head width, and tail length were recorded. A significant delay in fur development was observed at 0.3 Gy and in other physiological markers at doses above 0.3 Gy, while a significant increase in mortality and growth retardation occurred only at 1.0 and 1.5 Gy. Although congenital anomalies such as syndactyly and bent tail were observed at doses of 0.5-1.5 Gy, only syndactyly showed a statistically significant increase in frequency. A statistically significant lower body weight was observed during the first week of postnatal life, but body weights increased to normal levels by the second week in animals exposed to doses less than 1.0 Gy. At higher doses, low body weight persisted throughout the postnatal period. Head length and tail length showed a significant decrease from controls at 0.5-1.5 Gy, and the effect was evident from birth to age 6 weeks. But a similar effect on body length and head width was noticed only at 1.0 and 1.5 Gy. These studies indicate that even in the absence of any major morphological changes, normal development of physiological landmarks and postnatal growth can be impaired by fetal irradiation at 17 days p.c. (post coitus). Morphological changes appear to have a threshold between 0.3-0.5 Gy, while physiological marker effects may occur with a lower threshold.  相似文献

Social, olfactory, and oestrous cycle influences on the frequency of flank-marking and vaginal marking were studied in female hamsters. Vaginal marking was more frequent in the presence of males or their odours than females or their odours. Vaginal marking frequency was greatest the day before oestrus (day 4), intermediate on days 2 and 3, and zero on the oestrous day. The probable sexual advertisement functions of vaginal marking were discussed. In contrast, flank-marking by females was stimulated more by other female odours than by male odours. The frequency of flank-marking was elevated by agonistic encounters and was reduced by sexual encounters. Flank-marking seems to have functions related to functions of aggression among hamsters.  相似文献
