The purpose of present study was to investigate the growth performance and hematological parameters of Siberian sturgeon Acipenser baerii in three feeding strategies (satiation feeding, restricted feeding and starvation). We considered two body weights 465.75 ± 11.18 g and 250.40 ± 12 g for large fish and small fish, respectively. In a 45‐day experiment, eighteen fiberglass tanks were used for six triplicate treatments. In restricted feeding strategy, the fish were fed to 50% of satiation and starved treatments were an absolute feed deprivation throughout the experiment. At the end of 45‐day period, the hematological parameters were measured. The reduction of weight, condition factor and daily growth rate in the smaller fish was dramatically higher than the larger fish. Feed deprivation increased the rate of weight loss. Specific growth rate were negative in the large and small fish of starved treatments. The hematological results revealed no significant differences in except for the number of monocytes in larger fish. Large satiated fish showed the highest number of monocytes. In general, these strategies (restriction and deprivation) did not have any negative impacts on the hematological parameter in both sizes but respect to fish body weight, difference in total feed input between satiated and restricted treatments changed growth performance. It seems that restricted feeding (50% of satiation) in large fish was enough to achieve optimal growth while the amount of feed provided for small fish was not enough. Therefore; we can conclude that the restricted feeding is an effective strategy in rearing sturgeon at higher weight when the rearing condition is unsuitable.  相似文献

Rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri , were fed pelleted food ad libitum for 35 and 50 days. Lipid deposits were determined in the viscera, liver and muscle (epaxial and hypaxial). Most of the lipid accumulated in the viscera, but the lipid content of liver and epaxial muscle also increased. Hypaxial muscle lipid content remained the same throughout the feeding period. Upon starving the fish for 27 and 48 days following 50 days of feeding, visceral lipid contributed most to energy metabolism among the depots investigated. Muscle also contributed a considerable share while the absolute amount derived from the liver was much smaller.
Patterns of fatty acid mobilization during starvation were also investigated. Saturated acids were preferentially mobilized from the viscera, resulting in a rise in the percentage of monoenes and polyunsaturates. In liver, the percentage of saturates remained relatively constant whereas the percentage of monoenes declined and polyunsaturates increased. In muscle, a substantial increase in saturates was caused by a decline in monoenes; polyunsaturate content remained constant. As a result of these shifts in relative fatty acid composition the U/S (unsaturates to saturates) ratio rose in viscera and liver and decreased in muscle. The UI (unsaturation index) responded in essentially the same way. Possible explanations for preferential fatty acid utilization are discussed in terms of energetics and structural relationships.  相似文献

Adult golden perch Macquaria ambigua were fed to satiety, starved for up to 210 days, or starved for 150 days then fed to satiety for 60 days to investigate the utilization of energy stores in response to food deprivation and re-feeding. Golden perch sequentially mobilize energy from hepatic tissue, extra-hepatic lipid, and finally muscle components in response to food deprivation. The relative size of the liver was significantly reduced by 30 days after the onset of food deprivation due to the simultaneous mobilization of lipid, protein and glycogen reserves. These stores were renewed rapidly within 30 days by satiety feeding. Mobilization of lipid stores in perivisceral fat bodies occurred between 30 and 60 days of food deprivation. These deposits were also renewed upon re-feeding, although not as rapidly as liver reserves. The glycogen content of the epaxial muscle was reduced by the 60th day of food deprivation but subsequently increased indicating the mobilization of other energy reserves. The concentration of muscle lipid decreased after 90 days of food deprivation. The only significant response in body composition observed in the fish fed to satiety throughout the study was an increase in the relative size of the perivisceral fat bodies. The results of this study suggest that golden perch are well adapted to cope with extended periods of food deprivation, storing energy as perivisceral fat when food is readily available and having a clearly sequential process for mobilizing energy when food is scarce which largely protects the integrity of the musculature.  相似文献

A factorial experiment was designed to examine the effect on compensatory growth (CG) of Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus fed diets containing different protein and lipid levels under normal and temporally restricted feeding regimes. Four diets were formulated to contain either 30% or 36% crude protein, and 5% or 11% crude lipid. Triplicate replicates of each treatment were assigned to 24 150‐L tanks (20 fish/tank density). Fish (mean initial weight ± SD = 8.79 ± 0.34 g) were then fed either the normal feeding regime (thrice daily to apparent satiation) or the restricted regime (1 day feed deprivation followed by 3 days of feeding to apparent satiation) over a 44‐days study period. Fish receiving a diet under the restricted regime achieved weight gains (WG) comparable to fish consuming the diet containing 30% protein and 5% lipids under the normal feeding regime. Fish maintained on the restricted feeding regime exhibited reduced feed intake (FI), WG, feed efficiency ratio (FE), protein efficiency rate (PER) and hepatosomatic index versus fish on the normal feeding regime, except WG in fish fed the diet with 30% protein and 5% lipids. However, the resultant FI (85%~94%) was higher than the excepted 75% intake when fish were subjected to the restricted regime. Feeding 11% lipid diets led to improved FI, WG, FE, and PER compared to feeding the 5% lipid diets. Increased FI, WG, and FE, but reduced PER were observed in fish fed with 36% protein versus fish fed 30% protein. Fish receiving the 36% protein diets had lower whole‐body moisture and ash contents, but elevated whole‐body protein and lipid contents compared to those receiving the 30% protein diets. Whole‐body moisture contents were lower, but whole‐body protein, lipid and ash contents were higher in fish fed 11% lipid diets than in fish fed 5% lipid diets. There was an increase in whole‐body moisture content, but a decrease in protein and lipid content in response to the restricted feeding regime. Ash content was not affected by the feeding regime. The present study shows that Nile tilapia fed diets subjected to a restricted feeding regime exhibited growth comparable to those fed the diet at 30% protein and 5% lipid levels under a normal feeding regime. This positive effect was more pronounced in diets at a high protein level or in a combination of high protein and lipid levels.  相似文献

The capacity of hybrid tilapia Oreochromis mossambicus × O. niloticus [23.2 ± 0.2 g (mean ± SE)] to show compensatory growth was assessed in an 8‐week experiment. Fish were deprived of feed for 1, 2 and 4 weeks, and then fed to satiation for 4 weeks; fish fed to satiation during the experiment served as control. Water temperature gradually declined from 28.1 to 25.5°C throughout the experiment. Specific growth rate (SGR) decreased with progressive food deprivation. At the end of deprivation, body weight was lower in the deprived fish than in the control. Fish deprived for 4 weeks exhibited lower contents of lipids and energy in whole body, and higher moisture content and ratio of protein to energy (P/E) than those of the control; they also consumed feed faster than the control when normal feeding was resumed. All deprived fish showed higher food intake (FI) than that of the control during re‐alimentation; however, enhanced SGR was only observed in the fish deprived for 4 weeks. There were no significant differences in digestibility of protein and energy, food efficiency (FE) or energy retention efficiency between the control and deprived fish. At the end of re‐alimentation, deprived fish failed to catch up in body weight with the control, while content of moisture, lipids and energy, and P/E in whole body of the deprived fish did not significantly differ from that of the control. The results of the experiment revealed that the hybrid tilapia reared in freshwater showed partial capacity for compensatory growth following food deprivation of 4 weeks, and that growth compensation was due mainly to increased FI, rather than to improved FE.  相似文献

Juvenile Arctic charr responded to a change from restricted to satiation feeding by showing a growth spurt (compensatory growth). During this period of rapid growth the fish became hyper-phagic and in the days immediately following transfer from restricted to satiation feeding showed improved food conversion efficiency compared to their counterparts raised on a liberal feeding regime. Tissue (liver and muscle) nucleic acid concentrations were influenced by feeding regime, and RNA : DNA ratios were low in both starved fish and those fed restricted rations. Following transfer from restricted to satiation feeding, tissue RNA : DNA ratios were rapidly restored to initial levels. The uses of tissue RNA: DNA ratios both in evaluating nutritional status and as growth indices are discussed.  相似文献

Utilization of whole algae, lipid, protein and total nitrogen and total carbon by the luderick, Girella tricuspidata , fed ad libitum were found to be comparable with published results obtained for other species. Periods of food deprivation were found to cause reduced efficiency of utilization for all nutrients measured, with a 4–day deprivation period having a greater effect than a 24–h deprivation period.
Only animals fed ad libitum were able to obtain a greater amount of lipid from their food than was defaecated. Utilization of protein and non–protein nitrogen is similar in fish fed ad libitum , but a greater reliance upon the non–protein nitrogen content of the food for nutrition is apparent when the fish are subjected to periods of food deprivation. Nitrogen utilization, relative to other nutrients, by fish subjected to periods of food deprivation is greatest immediately after a feeding bout. Total carbon utilization relative to other nutrients increases with increasing time of deprivation following a feeding bout.
It is suggested that these changes in nutrient utilization with time after feeding are the result of rapid utilization of the nitrogen–rich cell contents, followed later by utilization of the algal cell wall.  相似文献

Social interactions and dominance hierarchy effects are important factors governing rates of growth of Arctic charr, Salvelinus alpinus L. The effects of hierarchy were increased as access to food became more restricted, i.e. feeding frequency was reduced, but these effects could not be attributed to direct competition for food since fish were fed to satiation at each feeding period. The results suggest that, whilst some fish on the restricted feeding regime were able to maintain good rates of growth, feeding by the majority of the fish was inhibited by the presence of larger individuals. Due to the importance of these hierarchy effects it was not possible to demonstrate physiological adaptations in fish allowed infrequent access to food.  相似文献

Dietary conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) affects fat deposition and lipid metabolism in mammals, including livestock. To determine CLA effects in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar), a major farmed fish species, fish were fed for 12 weeks on diets containing fish oil or fish oil with 2% and 4% CLA supplementation. Fatty acid composition of the tissues showed deposition of CLA with accumulation being 2 to 3 fold higher in muscle than in liver. CLA had no effect on feed conversion efficiency or growth of the fish but there was a decreased lipid content and increased protein content after 4% CLA feeding. Thus, the protein:lipid ratio in whole fish was increased in fish fed 4% CLA and triacylglycerol in liver was decreased. Liver beta-oxidation was increased whilst both red muscle beta-oxidation capacity and CPT1 activity was decreased by dietary CLA. Liver highly unsaturated fatty acid (HUFA) biosynthetic capacity was increased and the relative proportion of liver HUFA was marginally increased in salmon fed CLA. CLA had no effect on fatty acid Delta6 desaturase mRNA expression, but fatty acid elongase mRNA was increased in liver and intestine. In addition, the relative compositions of unsaturated and monounsaturated fatty acids changed after CLA feeding. CLA had no effect on PPARalpha or PPARgamma expression in liver or intestine, although PPARbeta2A expression was reduced in liver at 4% CLA feeding. CLA did not affect hepatic malic enzyme activity. Thus, overall, the effect of dietary CLA was to increase beta-oxidation in liver, to reduce levels of total body lipid and liver triacylglycerol, and to affect liver fatty acid composition, with increased elongase expression and HUFA biosynthetic capacity.  相似文献

Protein, lipid, water and caloric contents of immature rainbow trout, relative to size of whole fish, growing at different rates were examined by use of allometric analysis (y = axb, Huxley, 1932). Fish grew at different rates as a result of differences in ration size (satiation, or 4–5% of dry body weight), temperature (7 and 12°C) and bGH (bovine growth hormone) administration. In fingerlings, protein, lipid and caloric contents tended to increase (v. body weight) as a percentage of body composition, whereas above fingerling size, protein decreased while lipid and caloric contents still increased. These trends occurred regardless of growth rate differences. The correlations between protein, lipid, caloric contents and body weight were high so reliable estimates of body components can be made from body weight for all experimental treatments. At satiation rations (7 and 12°C), there were no significant differences in protein content, but lipid and caloric contents were significantly higher in control fish. At low rations, protein and caloric contents were lower than those at satiation rations and lipid was lower than in the control group. On a dry weight basis, in uninjected fish at 12°C, ration size did not influence the percentage composition (protein and lipid) but the low ration group had lower energy values per unit of body dry weight. At low temperature (7°C satiation), fish had lower lipid and higher protein content (dry weight basis) than their controls (12°C satiation), thereby resembling bGH injected fish at satiation rations. Values of caloric content estimated from protein and lipid values by use of standard conversion factors differed sufficiently from caloric values directly determined by bomb calorimetry to suggest that caloric values of lipids may change during growth. The increase in body caloric content during growth apparently results mainly from an increase in the percentage of lipid. The similarity of body composition between different growth rate groups implied a tendency for conservation of relative proportions of components such that body composition can be approximated from body weight. Equations were also given to describe the relationship between water content and body constituents, and the relationship between condition factor (K) and both the body dry weight and lipid content.

Greenback flounder Rhombosolea tapirina ( c. 2 g) fed to satiation had significantly ( P <0·01) higher feed consumption in the evening than in the morning whereas there was no difference between feeding times for flounder fed restricted rations (1 or 2% body weight per day) because they consumed all of the ration. Differences in growth performance were due to feeding time and ration. Carcass moisture, lipid and energy content were significantly ( P <0·001) different between rations; length gain was significantly affected by feeding time ( P <0·05) and ration ( P <0·001); weight gain showed a significant ( P <0·001) interaction between feeding time and ration. The relationship between feed consumption and specific growth rate showed that the exponential gradient was significantly higher ( P <0·01) for the evening fed fish and indicated feed efficiency for evening fed fish increased as feed consumption increased. Urea excretion increased from 12–20 to 58–63% of total nitrogen excretion at the 1 and 3% rations, respectively. Ammonia and urea excretion were significantly affected by ration ( P <0·001) and feeding time ( P <0·05). Fish fed the 2% ration in the evening had higher growth efficiency and significantly ( P <0·01) lower rates of urea excretion than fish fed 2 or 3% ration in the morning. It is suggested that the higher energetic costs associated with differences in ammonia and urea excretion contributed to differences in growth efficiency.  相似文献

Food intake, growth and food conversion of young, O-group herring were studied at two temperatures and feeding regimes over a period of 19 weeks. The food intake of fish fed to satiation twice daily showed considerable variation. Food intake per fish at 14.5° C was about three times that at 6.5° C, and was generally much higher than in most other species of fish studied. The mean increase in wet weight over the 19-week period was 0.581 g/week at 14.5° C and 0.236 g/week at 6.5° C in fish fed to satiation and 0.094 g/week at 6.2° C and a ration of 1.3% of the body weight. Growth depensation was found to occur even in fish fed to satiation. The changes in specific growth rate, that is the percentage increase in weight/day, showed similar trends at different temperatures and food regimes. The mean conversion efficiency of fish on a ration of 1.3% at 6.2° C was higher than that of fish fed until satiation, at 14.5 and 6.5° C. The conversion efficiency of fish fed to satiation at 14.5° C showed a distinct decrease with increasing weight while at 6.5° C such a clear trend was not observed. In general, the conversion efficiency of young herring were found to be much lower than that of most other species studied. The weight exponent of the quantitative relationship between food intake and body weight at 14.5° C was 0.744. The total metabolic expenditure at 14.5° C, calculated using Winberg's (1956) 'utilization coefficient, gave a weight exponent of 0.773.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to determine the extent to which the fish liver is perfused with blood. Transonic? flow probes were therefore implanted around the ventral aorta and hepatic vein(s) to record baseline blood flows in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) previously held under two different feeding regimes (food-deprived or fed to satiation, 8-12 weeks). Fish from both groups were exposed to a gradual temperature decrease (12°C to 5°C) and physical disturbance. Cardiac output (Q), stroke volume (Sv) and hepatic venous blood flow (HVBF) were significantly reduced in food-deprived trout at 12°C. Heart rate was not significantly affected by nutritional status, but was significantly reduced when temperature was decreased to 5°C. Physically disturbing each fish at 12°C and 5°C showed that the performance capacity of the heart was not affected by food deprivation as the capacity to increase Q and Sv was not reduced in the food-deprived group. Overall this study showed that food deprivation in rainbow trout reduced cardiac and hepatic blood flows. However, long-term food deprivation did not affect the capacity of the heart to acutely increase performance.  相似文献

Alternating periods of food deprivation with those of unlimited provision of food depressed the growth of Arctic charr, Salvelinus alpinus , below that of controls. Fish that were deprived of food and then fed on alternate weeks (1:1) were larger than those that were exposed to periods of 1 5- or 3-week deprivation and feeding (1·5:1·5 or 3:3). On receiving excess food supplies following 24 weeks on the restricted feeding regimes the previously-restricted fish grew more rapidly than the controls. The greatest compensatory growth was displayed after the 3:3 regime, followed by the 1·5: 1·5 and then the 1:1 feeding regime. At the termination of the experiment there were no significant differences in body weight between fish fed according to the different regimes during the period that food restriction was imposed. Growth patterns of the immature males and females were similar, but mature males were significantly lighter than the immature fish by the end of the experiment. Both immature and maturing fish displayed a compensatory growth response on return to adequate feeding. Beginning food restriction in May did not influence the proportions of male fish ( c . 60%) which were mature in the autumn.  相似文献

Norris and USDA-103 strains of channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus were compared for growth rate and food conversion ratio under satiation feeding and restricted feeding (1% body weight day−1) regimes. At the start of the experiment Norris fish weighed 2·8 g, USDA-103 fish weighed 14·0 g. Therefore, a regression of the loge of specific growth rate against the loge of mean body size with an empirically derived fixed slope of -0·37 was used to compare growth rates. Under both feeding regimes the USDA-103 strain had faster specific growth rates and more efficient food conversion. In subsequent studies, voluntary food intake of size matched fish (60 g average) from these two strains was compared using a radiographic method. Fish were acclimatized to tank conditions for 3 weeks prior to voluntary food intake measurement. Half of the groups were deprived of food for 2 days prior to food intake measurement, while the remaining groups were fed 1% body weight day−1. The USDA-103 strain fish ate significantly more food and grew faster than the Norris strain fish. Previously fasted Norris fish subsequently ate more than their fed counterparts, whereas the fed USDA-103 fish consumed more food than the fasted USDA-103 group. When the USDA-103 strain fish were deprived of food for 4 , 2 or 0 days, all groups subsequently consumed between 4·5 and 5·0% of body weight in one meal. The USDA-103 fish, unlike the Norris fish were not stimulated to consume more after short-duration fasting. Taken together, these results suggest that there are genetic differences in growth, food conversion ratio and regulation of food intake between Norris and USDA-103 strains.  相似文献

Winter flounder from known locations were sorted according to their reproductive status about 4 weeks before spawning. Five groups were then fed to satiation and three groups were not fed. The experiment was terminated at the end of the summer feeding season. At termination, only one of the recently spawned fish with restricted feeding showed gonad recrudescence. Conversely, all previously reproductive fish which had been fed to satiation showed gonad recrudescence. Fish fed to satiation included some which had been initially designated non-reproductive post-mature. These experiments indicate that a non-reproductive post-mature state is inducible and may be reversible, with the switch related to nutritional status.  相似文献

Plasma cortisol elevation, a common consequence of stress, occurs in salmonids of subordinate rank; these fish acquire a smaller share of available food and grow more slowly. This study examined the role of cortisol itself in these phenomena. Cortisol implants, with parallel sham and control treatments, were used to create a chronic threefold elevation in plasma cortisol levels in juvenile rainbow trout, and the individual feeding patterns of the fish were evaluated using X-ray radiography. The three treatment groups were (1) held alone and fed to satiation, thereby providing a measure of voluntary appetite, or mixed together in equal proportions and fed to either (2) satiation or (3) half-satiation, thereby allowing assessment of the additional effects of competitive interaction and food limitation. Chronic plasma cortisol elevation had significant negative effects on individual appetite, growth rate, condition factor, and food conversion efficiency, independent of whether the fish were held under unmixed or mixed conditions. Under the latter, mean share of meal was reduced and fin damage increased in cortisol-treated fish; negative growth effects were more severe with food limitation, but the response patterns were otherwise unchanged. Even in the absence of other groups, cortisol-treated fish showed more variable feeding patterns. When compared at the same individual ration levels, cortisol-treated fish had lower growth rates, reflecting a higher "cost of living." Cortisol treatment had no effect on aerobic swimming performance. These results suggest that the structure of the feeding hierarchy may not be determined solely by competitive ability but may also be greatly influenced by differences in the feeding behaviour of unstressed fish versus stressed fish caused by cortisol elevation in the latter.  相似文献

The influence of high stocking density (HSD) and food deprivation was assessed on carbohydrate metabolism of several tissues of gilthead sea bream Sparus auratus for 14 days. Fish were randomly assigned to one of four treatments: (1) fed fish under normal stocking density (NSD) (4 kg m(-3)); (2) fed fish under HSD (70 kg m(-3)); (3) food-deprived fish under NSD; and (4) food-deprived fish under HSD. After 14 days, samples were taken from the plasma, liver, gills, kidney and brain for the assessment of plasma cortisol, levels of metabolites and the activity of several enzymes involved in carbohydrate metabolism. HSD conditions alone elicited important changes in energy metabolism of several tissues that in some cases were confirmatory (5-fold increase in plama cortisol, 20% increase in plasma glucose, 60% decrease in liver glycogen and 20% increase in gluconeogenic potential in the liver) whereas in others provided new information regarding metabolic adjustments to cope with HSD in the liver (100% increase in glucose phosphorylating capacity), gills (30% decrease in capacity for phosphorylating glucose), kidney (80% increase in the capacity of phosphorylating glucose) and brain (2.5-fold increase in ATP levels). On the other hand, food deprivation alone resulted in increased plasma cortisol, and metabolic changes in the liver (enhanced gluconeogenic and glycogenolytic potential of 13% and 18%, respectively) and brain (10% increase in glycolytic capacity), confirmatory of previous studies, whereas new information regarding metabolic adjustments during food deprivation was obtained in the gills and kidney (decreased lactate levels in both tissues of 45% and 55%, respectively). Furthermore, the results obtained provided, for the first time in fish, information indicating that food deprivation increased the sensitivity of gilthead sea bream to the stress induced by HSD compared with the fed controls, as demonstrated by increased plasma cortisol levels (50% increase vs. fed fish) and a further increase in the capacity to export glucose mobilized from liver glycogen stores (70% decrease vs. fed fish). These results lend support for a cumulative effect of both stressors on plasma cortisol and parameters assessed on carbohydrate metabolism in the present experiments, and provide information regarding reallocation of metabolic energy to cope with simultaneous stressors in fish.  相似文献

Hunger affects the feeding and swimming behaviour in fish. After 36 h of food deprivation, the feeding and swimming behaviour of Pseudorasbora parva (Cyprinidae) was studied under different prey densities (0.5, 1, 2, 5, 10 and 25 of Daphnia pulex per liter). The initial feeding rates showed marked variations in relation to prey availability. Under high prey densities, the initial feeding rate of fish was higher and subsequently decreased faster, when compared to those feeding under low prey densities. At higher prey densities, two factors were involved: that of higher prey encounter rates and also the attainment of food satiation at a faster rate. Across all prey densities, the feeding rates of fish reached a plateau after satiation. The swimming speed of fish was found to be negatively related to the prey density and a significant change in swimming speed was noted as being directly related to the level of satiation. It was found that the increasing satiation level greatly influenced the handling time and reactive volume of predator, which finally caused reduced feeding rates.  相似文献
