This paper gives unique data on the ecology of aquatic insects inhabiting lakes in the Baraba forest-steppe region of West
Siberia, where the lakeside zone is represented by thick reeds. It is shown that reeds, along with other lake biotopes, are
an optimal habitat for many hydrobionts and especially for larvae of the orders Odonata and Diptera. 相似文献

The zooplankton of ephemeral waterbodies of Saratov oblast is represented by 68 species of crustaceans: 9 fairy shrimps, 25
cladocerans, 10 calanoids, and 24 cyclopoids. Regional and local patterns of high species diversity in the zooplankton of
ephemeral waterbodies are discussed. The specificity of crustacean species composition in ephemeral waterbodies of intrazonal
forest-steppe landscapes of the valley river basin of the Don River and of the steppes and desert steppes of Zavolzhye is
shown. The number of crustacean species in the zooplankton increases from the northwest to southeast in all ephemeral waterbodies
of forest-steppe (33 species), steppe (39), and desert steppe (52) zones. The impact of irrigation systems on the formation
of zooplankton species composition in ephemeral waterbodies was established. 相似文献

Ponds are common and abundant landscape features in temperate environments, particularly on floodplains where lateral connectivity with riverine systems persists. Despite their widespread occurrence and importance to regional diversity, research on the ecology and hydrology of temperate ephemeral and perennial floodplain ponds lags behind that of other shallow waterbodies. This study examines the aquatic macroinvertebrate diversity of 34 ponds (20 perennial and 14 ephemeral) on two unregulated riverine floodplain meadows in Leicestershire, UK. Perennial ponds supported nearly twice the diversity of ephemeral ponds. Despite frequent inundation of floodwater and connectivity with other floodplain waterbodies, ephemeral ponds supported distinct invertebrate communities when compared to perennial ponds. When the relative importance of physical, chemical, biological and spatial characteristics was examined, physical and chemical characteristics were found to account for more variation in community composition than biological or spatial variables. The results suggest that niche characteristics rather than neutral colonisation processes dominate the structure of invertebrate communities of floodplain ponds. The maintenance of pond networks with varying hydroperiod lengths and environmental characteristics should be encouraged as part of conservation management strategies to provide heterogeneous environmental conditions to support and enhance aquatic biodiversity at a landscape scale. 相似文献

The physical structure of a habitat generally has a strong influence on the diversity and abundance of associated organisms. I investigated the role of coralline algal turf structure in determining spatial variation of gastropod assemblages at different tidal heights of a rocky shore near Sydney, Australia. The structural characteristics of algal turf tested were frond density (or structural complexity) and frond length (the vertical scale over which structural complexity was measured). This definition of structural complexity assumes that complexity of the habitat increases with increasing frond density. While frond length was unrelated to gastropod community structure, I found significant correlations between density of fronds and multivariate and univariate measures of gastropod assemblages, indicating the importance of structural complexity. In contrast to previous studies, here there were negative relationships between the density of fronds and the richness and abundance of gastropods. Artificial habitat mimics were used to manipulate the density of fronds to test the hypothesis that increasing algal structural complexity decreases the richness and abundance of gastropods. As predicted, there were significantly more species of gastropods in loosely packed than in tightly packed turf at both low- and mid-shore levels. Despite large differences between gastropod assemblages at different tidal heights, the direction and magnitude of these negative effects were similar at low- and mid-shore levels and, therefore, relatively independent of local environmental conditions. These novel results extend our previous understanding of the ecological effects of habitat structure because they demonstrate possible limitations of commonly used definitions of structural complexity, as well as distinct upper thresholds in the relationship between structural complexity and faunal species richness. 相似文献

The paper presents data on the composition and distribution of freshwater sponges in western Siberia. Recently, four species have been found in lakes and rivers, and one species has been recorded in a study of palynological and archaeological samples. Freshwater sponges live mainly in the small rivers and lakes of the forest-steppe and southern taiga zones. About a hundred taxa of aquatic invertebrates have been recorded together with the found sponges. The biomass of sponges among the zooperiphyton significantly decreases northwards. 相似文献

1. Floodplain rivers in Australia's wet/dry tropics are regarded as being among the most ecologically intact and bio-diverse lotic ecosystems in the world, yet there have been relatively few community-based studies of their aquatic fauna.
2. To investigate relationships between hydrological connectivity and biodiversity in the region, macroinvertebrates were collected from sites within two contrasting floodplain rivers, the 'tropical' Gregory River and 'dryland' Flinders River systems, during the dry season and analysed at various spatial scales. A subset of sites was re-sampled in the following dry season to explore temporal variation. The fauna consisted of 124 morphotaxa, dominated by gatherers and the Insecta.
3. As predicted, hydrological connectivity (the lotic or lentic status of waterbodies) had a major influence on macroinvertebrate assemblage composition and diversity, both in space and time. Assemblages from waterbodies with similar connection histories were most alike, and beta-diversity between assemblages was greatest between lotic and lentic waterbodies, tending to increase with increasing spatial separation.
4. At smaller spatial scales, a number of within-waterbody, habitat and water quality characteristics were important for explaining variation (61%) in the taxonomic organization of assemblages, and characteristics associated with primary productivity and habitat diversity were important for explaining variation (45%) in the functional organization of assemblages. However, much of the small-scale environmental variation across the study region appeared to be related to broad-scale variation in hydrological connectivity, which had both direct and indirect effects on macroinvertebrate assemblages.
5. Conservation of the biodiversity in Australia's wet/dry tropics may depend on conserving the natural variation in hydrological connectivity and the unregulated flow of floodplain rivers. 相似文献

We tested if variations (i.e., breadth) in morphology and habitat use vary predictably among six aquatic gastropod species that were collected across Indiana and Illinois, USA. We predicted that interspecific morphological variation would positively covary with variation in habitat use among species. We used geometric morphometrics (Procrustes technique and relative warp analysis) to quantify morphology and multivariate analyses (PCA) to quantify habitat. Increased morphological breadth did not vary predictably with increased habitat breadth. However, we found that life history traits correspond with patterns in morphological and habitat breadth for these six aquatic gastropods. Pulmonate gastropods (use lungs for respiration) that lack an operculum cover exhibited decreased morphological breadth compared to coenogastropods (use gills for respiration). This pattern may ultimately be a function of behavioral adaptations in freshwater gastropods. Gastropods that are capable of breathing air or using other behavioral modifications such as burrowing to escape predators may not require high morphological breadth. Conversely, selection may favor higher morphological breadth in gastropods with gills that also do not move out of the water column to escape predators. 相似文献

The world’s gastropod fauna from continental waters comprises ∼4,000 valid described species and a minimum of 33–38 independent
lineages of Recent Neritimorpha, Caenogastropoda and Heterobranchia (including the Pulmonata). The caenogastropod component
dominates in terms of species richness and diversity of morphology, physiology, life and reproductive modes and has produced
several highly speciose endemic radiations. Ancient oligotrophic lakes (e.g., Baikal, Ohrid, Tanganyika) are key hotspots
of gastropod diversity; also noteworthy are a number of lower river basins (e.g., Congo, Mekong, Mobile Bay). But unlike many
other invertebrates, small streams, springs and groundwater systems have produced the most speciose associations of freshwater
gastropods. Despite their ecological importance in many aquatic ecosystems, understanding of even their systematics is discouragingly
incomplete. The world’s freshwater gastropod fauna faces unprecedented threats from habitat loss and degradation and introduced
fishes and other pests. Unsustainable use of ground water, landscape modification and stock damage are destroying many streams
and springs in rural/pastoral areas, and pose the most significant threats to the large diversity of narrow range endemics
in springs and ground water. Despite comprising only ∼5% of the world’s gastropod fauna, freshwater gastropods account for
∼20% of recorded mollusc extinctions. However, the status of the great majority of taxa is unknown, a situation that is exacerbated
by a lack of experts and critical baseline data relating to distribution, abundance, basic life history, physiology, morphology
and diet. Thus, the already considerable magnitude of extinction and high levels of threat indicated by the IUCN Red List
of Threatened Species is certainly a significant underestimate.

The dynamics of the main contaminating radionuclides in the components of aquatic ecosystems within the Chernobyl APP exclusion
zone is considered. The possible causes are analyzed for the marked increase in the specific activity of 90Sr in water and hydrobionts of the lakes at the dammed left bank of river Pripyat. Notable is the elevated frequency of chromosomal
aberrations in the root meristems of aquatic higher plants (up to 17%) and in the embryonal tissues of gastropod mollusks
(up to 27%), alterations in the hematological indices for gastropods, and high infestation of aquatic higher plants by parasitic
fungi and gall arthropods in the most radiocontaminated reservoirs. 相似文献

Rotifers are important components of freshwater ecosystems and sensitive indicators of environmental changes. This study was
carried out to test the hypothesis that, among environmental variables, salinity and aquatic vegetation have significant effects
on rotifer diversity and abundance. We analyzed rotifer assemblages in the littoral zone of 22 hydromorphologically different
shallow waterbodies in West Azarbaijan, Iran. Rotifer diversity and abundance were not significantly associated with basin
morphology, but were positively correlated with the percentage of vegetation cover. Salinity and electroconductivity positively
influenced rotifer abundance, while they had significantly negative effects on rotifer diversity. Halobiont species from the
genera Brachionus, Hexarthra, Synchaeta, and Notholca reached their highest abundances in the waterbodies with pronouncedly higher salinities. Our findings are in agreement with
recent records showing that distinct rotifer assemblages occur in saline and non-saline waterbodies. The role of salinity
and aquatic vegetation as the most important environmental drivers in shaping rotifer communities is confirmed. The results
of this study suggested that environmental changes could be significant on the micro-biogeographical level, and that the interaction
of salinity and observed human impact, i.e., trophic level, promote rotifer abundance as sensitive indicators of environmental
changes. 相似文献

Explanations for the coexistence of many closely related species in inland waters continue to be generated more than 50 years after Hutchinson’s question: why are there so many kinds of animals? This review focuses on the hypothesis that high species diversity of freshwater gastropods results, in part, from predators maintaining biodiversity across a range of deep- and shallow-water habitats. Invertebrate predators, such as aquatic insects, and leeches consume soft tissue of pulmonate snails by penetrating shells of various shapes and sizes. Crayfish and large prawns chip around the shell aperture to enter thick shells and crush small shells with their mandibles. Crabs use their strong chelae to crush thin and thick shells. Fishes with pharyngeal teeth are major shell-breaking predators that combine with other vertebrate predators such as turtles and wading birds to increase the diversity of gastropod communities by regulating the abundance of dominant species. Although the generalized diets of most freshwater predators preclude tight co-evolutionary patterns of responses, there are combinations of predators that modify gastropod behavior and shell morphology in aquatic assemblages of different ages and depths. This combination of invertebrate and vertebrate predatory impacts led to competitive advantages among individual gastropods with different adaptations: (1) less vulnerable shell morphologies and sizes; (2) predator-avoidance behaviors; or (3) rapid and widespread dispersal with variable life histories. Some individuals develop thicker and/or narrow-opening shells or shells with spines and ridges. Other thin-shelled species crawl out of the water or burrow to lower their risk to shell-breaking or shell-entering predators. Some alter their age at first reproduction and grow rapidly into a size refuge. Fluctuations in water levels and introductions of non-native species can change competitive dominance relationships among gastropods and result in major losses of native species. Many different gastropod predators control species that are human disease vectors. Most snails and their predators provide other ecosystem services such as nutrient cycling and transfer of energy to higher trophic levels. Their persistence and diversity of native species require adaptive management and coordinated study. 相似文献

The results of the study of the qualitative composition and relative content of highly volatile compounds from the needles in two natural pine populations located in the forest-steppe zone in the south of Central Siberia are presented. Altogether, 89 components were isolated. Analysis of intra- and interpopulation variability of 31 terpenoids (mono- and sesquiterpene fractions) was conducted. The spatial structure of the variance of features was analyzed. Significant interpopulation differences in the content of most compounds were registered. It was determined that, as growing conditions deteriorate, the mass fraction of lighter monoterpene compounds (especially α-pinene) is increased within populations, and qualitative diversity of the components of essential oils is decreased. The groups of terpenoids, the relative content of which is to a different degree associated with interpopulation differences and variety of the growing conditions of trees within populations, were isolated. 相似文献

A study of epiphytic gastropods associated with two submerged macrophytes (Myriophyllum spicatum and Vallisneria americana) was conducted at a soft and at a hard water site in the St. Lawrence River during two non-consecutive years in order to compare effects of macrophyte species and biomass, site and year in gastropod community structure. There was no effect of macrophyte species on total gastropod abundance nor on gastropod diversity, and few gastropod species showed a marked preference for either macrophyte species. Inter-site and inter-annual variations in diversity, total gastropod abundance and gastropod community structure were greater than variations among macrophytes. However, analysis of variations of epiphytic gastropod communities in one of the two sites shows that abiotic factors are important in explaining epiphytic gastropod distribution. Our results and results of other studies on gastropod population dynamics in the St. Lawrence River indicate that intra- and interspecific competition between gastropods is important on macrophytes and that they must be carefully considered in order to understand epiphytic community structure and population dynamics. 相似文献

At the end of the first half of the 20th century, 61 species and subspecies of fish, including one invader (bleak Alburnus alburnus) and 17 species—endemics of Baikal—were reported for Siberia (Berg, 1933, 1949). At the present time, in rivers, lakes, and reservoirs of Siberia, 96 fish species and subspecies are described, of which 80 are aboriginal and 16 are invaders; 33 species are endemics of Baikal. Each landscapegeographic zone of Siberia has its specific ichthyofauna: in rivers and lakes of the south of Siberia, species of boreal piedmont complex dominate; in water bodies of the steppe, forest-steppe, taiga, and southern parts of the forest-steppe zone boreal plain dominates; in the zone of tundra, arctic freshwater dominates; and in Baikal, the most part (35) of species belongs to the Baikal autochtonous complex. Most researchers, as before, distinguish in Siberia two ichthyogeographic sites—West Siberian and East Siberian—that enter the Arctic Province of the Circumpolar subregion of the Holarctic region. Baikal is considered in the rank of the suboblast of the Holarctic. 相似文献

Within a flat part of Western Siberia distribution of the small mammals and parasitic arthropods connected with them is accompanied by formation zonal host-parasite complexes dated for corresponding landscape zones or subzones: tundra complex dated for a tundra zone; forest complex dated for a forest zone (including subzones northern taiga, middle taiga, southern taiga and subtaiga); forest-steppe complex dated for a northern forest-steppe subzone; steppe complex dated for a southern forest-steppe subzone and steppe. Parasitic specificity of each type of a complex is defined by arthropods of different systematical and ecological groups: a tundra complex is defined by epizoite gamasid mites (Mesostigmata), forest and forest-steppe complexes is defined by tick (Ixodides) and fleas (Siphonaptera), steppe complex is defined by fleas and nidicolous gamasid mites. 相似文献

Long-term monitoring of the abundance and spatial distribution of 18 widespread species of Odonata has made it possible to assess their contribution to the export of aquatic productivity that entered the Barabinsk forest-steppe ecosystem. The annual emergence of Odonata varies from 0.8 to 4.9 g/m2 of the land area and from 2.3 to 13.3 g/m2 of the water area, which is 4–5 times larger than that in Diptera. The total flux of organic matter from water to terrestrial ecosystems remains relatively stable (sixfold interannual variability) irrespective of large interannual variations in the abundance of separate species (e.g., 42-fold interannual variability in Libellula quadrimaculata). The metal content was determined in nine Odonata species. Export of metals by dragonflies decreases in the series K > Na > Mg > Ca > Fe > Zn > Cu > Mn > Pb > Ni > Cr > Cd. Therefore, odonates appear to be quantitatively and qualitatively important providers of aquatic resources to the forest-steppe landscape of Western Siberia. 相似文献

Biodiversity of aquatic gastropods in the Mont St-Michel basin (France) in relation to salinity and drying of habitats 总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Seventy-seven polder and marsh stations were sampled for aquatic and riparian gastropods in the terrestrial basin of Mont St-Michel from March 1994–March 1995 and during a drought in 1996. In addition, four ponds with riparian coppice (bocage) were investigated. Twenty-one stations, mostly in polders, lacked snails; high values of conductivity, and by implication salinity, appeared to make the habitats unfavourable. Only the euryhaline hydrobid Potamopyrgus antipodarum and the amphibious lymnaeid Lymnaea truncatula survived in areas of high conductivity. In associated lagoons, the maximum level of salinity tolerated by freshwater gastropods was 35. Of the 14 species of gastropods collected, Lymnaea peregra and Anisus leucostoma were the most abundant. Stations had 1–7 species and the average gastropod species richness was 3.32 (±1.67). The canals that were the most susceptible to drying had a community of desiccation-resistant species including L. truncatula, Aplexa hypnorum, A. leucostoma and L. peregra. It appears that gastropod assemblages in the terrestrial basin of Mont St-Michel have achieved their current diversity by surviving strong ecological constraints. 相似文献

Biodiversity at larger spatial scales (γ) can be driven by within‐site partitions (α), with little variation in composition among locations, or can be driven by among‐site partitions (β) that signal the importance of spatial heterogeneity. For tropical elevational gradients, we determined the (a) extent to which variation in γ is driven by α‐ or β‐partitions; (b) elevational form of the relationship for each partition; and (c) extent to which elevational gradients are molded by zonation in vegetation or by gradual variation in climatic or abiotic characteristics. We sampled terrestrial gastropods along two transects in the Luquillo Mountains. One passed through multiple vegetation zones (tabonuco, palo colorado, and elfin forests), and one passed through only palm forest. We quantified variation in hierarchical partitions (α, β, and γ) of species richness, evenness, diversity, and dominance, as well as in the content and quality of litter. Total gastropod abundance linearly decreased with increasing elevation along both transects, but was consistently higher in palm than in other forest types. The gradual linear decline in γ‐richness was a consequence of opposing patterns with regard to α‐richness (monotonic decrease) and β‐richness (monotonic increase). For evenness, diversity, and dominance, α‐partitions and γ‐partitions evinced mid‐elevational peaks. The spatial organization of gastropod biodiversity did not mirror the zonation of vegetation. Rather, it was molded by: (a) elevational variation in productivity or nutrient characteristics, (b) the interspersion of palm forest within other forest types, and (c) the cloud condensation point acting as a transition between low and high elevation faunas. We examined the spatial and temporal variation of species diversity and genetic diversity in a metacommunity comprising 16 species of freshwater gastropods. We monitored species abundance at five localities of the Ain river floodplain in southeastern France, over a period of four years. Using 190 AFLP loci, we monitored the genetic diversity of Radix balthica , one of the most abundant gastropod species of the metacommunity, twice during that period. An exceptionally intense drought occurred during the last two years and differentially affected the study sites. This allowed us to test the effect of natural disturbances on changes in both genetic and species diversity. Overall, local (alpha) diversity declined as reflected by lower values of gene diversity H S and evenness. In parallel, the among-sites (beta) diversity increased at both the genetic ( F ST ) and species ( F STC ) levels. These results suggest that disturbances can lead to similar changes in genetic and community structure through the combined effects of selective and neutral processes. 相似文献
