The nutritional and social conditions that individuals experience during early development can have profound effects on their morphology, physiology, behaviour and life history. Experimental increases in brood size in birds can result in reduced offspring condition and survival, indicating that developmental deficits in enlarged broods have negative fitness consequences within the affected generation. To study long-term effects (i.e. transgenerational effects of developmental stress), we conducted a two-step breeding experiment in which we manipulated early developmental conditions in zebra finches Taeniopygia guttata. We raised zebra finches by manipulating brood sizes and controlled for maternal and genetic effects by cross-fostering. In a previous study, we showed that offspring condition and body size decreased with increasing brood size. Here we show that this effect was carried over to the next generation. Body size in nestlings and at nutritional independence was affected by the brood size in which the mothers were raised. Female offspring did significantly worse than male offspring when the mother had been raised in large broods, suggesting a sex-specific influence of maternal effects. These findings link early developmental stress in females with the phenotype of the next generation via maternal effects.  相似文献

Parents are predicted to trade offspring number and quality against the costs of reproduction. In altricial birds, parasites can mediate these costs because intensity of parasitism may increase with parental effort. In addition, parasites may mediate a trade-off between offspring number and quality because nestlings in large broods may have reduced anti-parasite immune defence. In this study, we experimentally analysed the effect of brood size on infestation by an ectoparasitic mite in nests of barn swallows (Hirundo rustica). Nests with an enlarged brood had larger prevalence and intensity of infestation than those with a reduced brood. Importantly, each nestling in enlarged broods was exposed to a larger number of mites, even when measured on a per nestling basis, than in reduced broods. Nestlings in enlarged broods had smaller body mass and T-cell-mediated immune response compared to reduced broods. T-cell-mediated immune response and feather growth were negatively correlated with per nestling intensity of infestation in enlarged but not in reduced broods. The results suggest that nestlings in enlarged broods have depressed immunity leading to larger per nestling mite infestation. Hence, exposure to parasites of offspring and parents increases with brood size, and parasitism can thus mediate trade-offs between reproduction and number and quality of the progeny in the barn swallow.  相似文献

Optimal investment into life-history traits depends on the environmental conditions that organisms are likely to experience during their life. Evolutionary theory tells us that optimal investment in reproduction versus maintenance is likely to shape the pattern of age-associated decline in performance, also known as aging. The currency that is traded against different vital functions is, however, still debated. Here, we took advantage of a phenotypic manipulation of individual quality in early life to explore (1) long-term consequences on life-history trajectories, and (2) the possible physiological mechanism underlying the life-history adjustments. We manipulated phenotypic quality of a cohort of captive zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata) by assigning breeding pairs to either an enlarged or a reduced brood. Nestlings raised in enlarged broods were in poorer condition than nestlings raised in reduced broods. Interestingly, the effect of environmental conditions experienced during early life extended to the age at first reproduction. Birds from enlarged broods delayed reproduction. Birds that delayed reproduction produced less offspring but lived longer, although neither fecundity nor longevity were directly affected by the experimental brood size. Using the framework of the life-table response experiment modeling, we also explored the effect of early environmental condition on population growth rate and aging. Birds raised in reduced broods tended to have a higher population growth rate, and a steeper decrease of reproductive value with age than birds reared in enlarged broods. Metabolic resources necessary to fight off the damaging effect of reactive oxygen species (ROS) could be the mechanism underlying the observed results, as (1) birds that engaged in a higher number of breeding events had a weaker red blood cell resistance to oxidative stress, (2) red blood cell resistance to oxidative stress predicted short-term mortality (but not longevity), and (3) was related with a parabolic function to age. Overall, these results highlight that early condition can have long-term effects on life-history trajectories by affecting key life-history traits such as age at first reproduction, and suggest that the trade-off between reproduction and self-maintenance might be mediated by the cumulative deleterious effect of ROS.  相似文献

In an attempt to test predictions of the optimisation hypothesis of life history traits in birds, we estimated fitness consequences of brood size manipulations. Experiments were carried out over a period of 4 years in a Mediterranean population of blue tits Parus caeruleus which is confronted with a particular set of environmental constraints. Effects of brood size manipulation were investigated in relation to year-to-year variation in environmental conditions, especially caterpillar abundance. There was a strong variation in the effects of brood size manipulation depending on year. Most effects were on offspring quality (fledging mass, tarsus length). The absolute number of recruits did not significantly differ among categories (reduced, control, enlarged broods) but varied considerably among years. Females recruited from enlarged broods were of lower quality, started to breed later and laid fewer eggs than those recruited from control and reduced broods. Neither parental survival nor reproductive performances of adults in year n + 1 was affected by brood size manipulation in year n. Thus there was no evidence for a cost of reproduction in this population. Since the number of recruits did not depend on brood size manipulation (recruitment rates were higher in reduced broods), but recruits from reduced broods were of better quality compared with other groups, we conclude that adults lay a clutch that is larger than that which is predicted by the optimisation hypothesis. Producing more young could incur some penalties because offspring from large broods are of lower quality and less likely to recruit in the population. We tested the brood-reduction hypothesis by adding three nestlingsto naturally occurring synchronous and asynchronous broods ofthe house wren (Troglodytes aedon) in order to mimic food shortagesfor the broods. Two types of controls were established in whichbrood size remained unchanged: those in which nestlings wereexchanged among broods and those in which no nestlings wereexchanged. The critical test of the hypothesis was in 1988 whenthere was a food shortage for enlarged broods. Although broodreduction occurred, enlarged synchronous broods produced asmany fledglings as did enlarged asynchronous broods, and fledgingmass was similar. Juvenile recapture 2-8 weeks after fledgingand offspring recruitment to subsequent breeding populationswere not related to treatment. The results are not consistentwith the brood-reduction hypothesis as an explanation for theoccurrence of hatching asynchrony in the house wren.  相似文献

Environmental factors play a key role in the expression of phenotypic traits and life-history decisions, specifically when they act during early development. In birds, brood size is a main environmental factor affecting development. Experimental manipulation of brood sizes can result in reduced offspring condition, indicating that developmental deficits in enlarged broods have consequences within the affected generation. Yet, it is unclear whether stress during early development can have fitness consequences projecting into the next generation. To study such trans-generational fitness effects, we bred female zebra finches, Taeniopygia guttata, whose mothers had been raised in different experimental brood sizes. We found that adult females were increasingly smaller with increasing experimental brood size in which their mother had been raised. Furthermore, reproductive success at hatching and fledging covaried negatively with the experimental brood size in which their mothers were raised. These results illustrate that early developmental stress can have long-lasting effects affecting reproductive success of future generations. Such trans-generational effects can be life-history responses adapted to environmental conditions experienced early in life.  相似文献

Studies of hatching asynchrony have rarely assessed the effect of parental investment strategies on the development of intra-brood hierarchies using indicators of nestling quality. The influence of hatching asynchrony and other variables related to parental investment on immunocompetence was evaluated measuring T-cell mediated immune response in broods of red-billed choughs ( Pyrrhocorax pyrrhocorax ), a large long-living passerine with a pronounced sexual size dimorphism. The results showed that T-cell mediated immune response depends on parental effects as shown by the differences between broods on hatching asynchrony. Male nestlings were both heavier and larger than female nestlings, but there was no effect of hatching order on these traits, nor on sex differences in immunocompetence. Differential investment strategy in relation to laying order did not favour older offspring or either of the sexes. Successful reproduction in this species might be so unpredictable and infrequent that strategies of parental investment in the brood could have evolved to attempt to maximize the survival of all nestlings by avoiding within-brood hierachies of size, body condition, and immunocompetence.  © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2008, 94 , 675–684.  相似文献

Using an individual-based simulation model we study how different mechanisms of food division among multiple offspring influence nestling number and quality, as well as parental effort. We consider the combination of different scenarios of food availability (feeding conditions), hatching asynchrony and food division. If parents have full control on how to divide food among offspring, asynchronous broods have higher breeding performance than synchronous ones in a wide range of feeding conditions, giving theoretical support to empirically proved benefits of hatching asynchrony. If parents accept the outcome of sibling competition there is a threshold in feeding conditions below which asynchronous broods produced more fledglings and the reverse was true above the threshold. Interestingly, parents relying on the outcome of nestling competition do not necessarily differ in breeding performance from those which have full control over food allocation. Our study combines hatching asynchrony, provisioning behaviour of parents, jostling behaviour of nestlings and feeding conditions as a network of interacting processes of enormous interest to fully understand the parent–offspring conflict.  相似文献

The degree of sexual seed set and the ability to cross were investigated in three taxa of Potentilla section Niveae ( P. chamissonis , P. insularis and P. nivea ) from the Svalbard Archipelago. Emasculated and bagged flowers had little or no seed set, while 71% of the emasculated, bagged and pollinated flowers had some. The taxa are interpreted as pseudogamous apomicts. Parental plants and offspring were subjected to isozyme analysis. Most of the offspring were clones of the mother plant, but 1.7% had bands from the pollen donor. The sexual offspring were all produced by mother plants of P. insularis , which is interpreted as a facultative apomict. Surprisingly, crosses between different taxa gave higher seed to ovule ratios and numbers of sexually produced offspring than crosses within taxa. Some of the sexually produced hybrid offspring had the same kind of hairs on the petioles as their mother taxon, showing that hybrids may not be intermediate in hair characters, which are considered important in the delimitation of these taxa. 1. We tested the hypothesis that the ability of parents to raise viable offspring limits clutch size in the greater snow goose ( Anser caerulescens atlanticus L.), a precocial bird.
2. We manipulated clutch size by exchanging complete clutches between pairs of nests to increase or decrease the clutch size by zero (control), one, two or three eggs in 314 nests over 2 years.
3. Pre-fledging survival of goslings increased in enlarged broods and decreased in reduced broods compared to control. Consequently, enlarged broods fledged more offspring and the reverse was true for reduced broods.
4. Size and mass of goslings near fledging was also higher in enlarged broods than in control, which suggests that offspring quality was also enhanced by the manipulation. This is contrary to the common trade-off between offspring numbers and quality.
5. Large families were dominant over smaller ones in feeding sites, which could explain the increased survival and growth of enlarged broods.
6. Our results suggest that the ability to raise young does not limit clutch size in this species and that parents could be more successful (i.e. increase both the number and quality of their offspring) by laying more eggs. However, the time required to lay additional eggs reduces the viability of all offspring and may explain why females do not lay more eggs.  相似文献

Studies of sibling competition within brood hierarchies have rarely assessed simultaneously the effects of sex and rank in the brood hierarchy on traits other than offspring mortality and differential growth. We studied the expression of heat-shock proteins (Hsps) to assess the physiological stress response to different combinations of sex and position within competitive brood hierarchies in the black kite Milvus migrans (Bodd.), a sexually dimorphic raptor showing facultative siblicide. Senior males showed higher stress levels than did senior females and younger siblings of each sex as revealed by Hsp60 values. The analysis of Hsp70 levels indicated that nestlings from broods in which the senior chick was a male showed higher stress levels than did nestlings from broods in which the senior chick was a female. In addition, levels of Hsp60 were related negatively to nutritional condition expressed as levels of plasmatic albumin. This suggests that the sex of senior chicks may be key in determining their stress level and that of their siblings, which is probably associated with sibling competition by fighting within brood hierarchies. The comparatively higher stress levels of senior males (and their siblings) may be a consequence of their ability to exploit their potential advantage from being the head start while avoiding a possible competitive disadvantage from being the smaller sex, independent of environmental conditions determining the probability of brood reduction. Differential stress levels depending on sex and rank in the brood hierarchy may be a consequence of parental control of offspring behaviour through differential resource allocation (e.g. yolk androgens) or it may reflect adaptations of particular chicks (senior males) to enhance their competitive ability within brood hierarchies.  © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2006, 88 , 383–390.  相似文献

Interspecific brood parasitism in birds presents a special problem for the host because the parasitic offspring exploit their foster parents, causing them to invest more energy in their current reproductive effort. Nestling brown-headed cowbirds (Molothrus ater) are a burden to relatively small hosts and may reduce fledgling quality and adult survival. We documented food-provisioning rates of one small host, the prothonotary warbler (Protonotaria citrea), at broods that were similar in age (containing nestlings 8–9 days old), but that varied in composition (number of warbler and cowbird nestlings) and mass, and measured the effect of brood parasitism on offspring recruitment and adult returns in the host. The rate of food provisioning increased with brood mass, and males and females contributed equally to feeding nestlings. Controlling for brood mass, the provisioning rate was higher for nests with cowbirds than those without. Recruitment of warbler fledglings from unparasitized nests was 1.6 and 3.7 times higher than that of fledglings from nests containing one or two cowbirds, respectively. Returns of double-brooded adult male and female warblers decreased with an increase in the number of cowbirds raised, but the decrease was more pronounced in males. Reduced returns of warbler adults and recruitment of warbler fledglings with increased cowbird parasitism was likely a result of reduced survival. Cowbird parasitism increased the warblers’ investment in current reproductive effort, while exerting additional costs to current reproduction and residual reproductive value. Our study provides the strongest evidence to date for negative effects of cowbird parasitism on recruitment of host fledglings and survival of host adults.  相似文献

Sex allocation theory assumes individual plasticity in maternal strategies, but few studies have investigated within‐individual changes across environments. In house wrens, differences between nests in the degree of hatching synchrony of eggs represent a behavioural polyphenism in females, and its expression varies with seasonal changes in the environment. Between‐nest differences in hatching asynchrony also create different environments for offspring, and sons are more strongly affected than daughters by sibling competition when hatching occurs asynchronously over several days. Here, we examined variation in hatching asynchrony and sex allocation, and its consequences for offspring fitness. The number and condition of fledglings declined seasonally, and the frequency of asynchronous hatching increased. In broods hatched asynchronously, sons, which are over‐represented in the earlier‐laid eggs, were in better condition than daughters, which are over‐represented in the later‐laid eggs. Nonetheless, asynchronous broods were more productive later within seasons. The proportion of sons in asynchronous broods increased seasonally, whereas there was a seasonal increase in the production of daughters by mothers hatching their eggs synchronously, which was characterized by within‐female changes in offspring sex and not by sex‐biased mortality. As adults, sons from asynchronous broods were in better condition and produced more broods of their own than males from synchronous broods, and both males and females from asynchronous broods had higher lifetime reproductive success than those from synchronous broods. In conclusion, hatching patterns are under maternal control, representing distinct strategies for allocating offspring within broods, and are associated with offspring sex ratios and differences in offspring reproductive success.  相似文献

This paper contributes to a revision of the genus Halectinosoma . Four new species are described, based on examination of ectinosomatid material from localities in western Europe, eastern Canada and the Arctic. Halectinosoma mandibularis sp. nov. is distinguishable from other species by the reduced setation of the mouthparts and enlarged mandibular gnathobase. Halectinosoma latisetifera sp. nov. bears an affinity with H. cooperatum but is easily distinguished by the shape of the setae on the female fifth leg. A species previously erroneously ascribed to H. finmarchicum (Scott) by several authors is described here as Halectinosoma kliei sp. nov. Halectinosoma gothiceps (Giesbrecht) is redescribed and the closely related Halectinosoma paragothiceps sp. nov. is described and distinguished from H. gothiceps . In this study, we use 12 months of data from 11 ant assemblages to test whether seasonal variation in ant diversity is governed by either the structuring influences of interspecific competition or environmental conditions. Because the importance of competition might vary along environmental gradients, we also test whether the signature of competition depends on elevation. We find little evidence that competition structures the seasonal patterns of activity in the ant assemblages considered, but find support for the effects of temperature on seasonal patterns of diversity, especially at low-elevation sites. Environmental conditions experienced by parents are increasingly recognized to affect offspring performance. We set out to investigate the effect of parental larval diet on offspring development time, adult body size and adult resistance to the bacterium Serratia marcescens in Drosophila melanogaster. Flies for the parental generation were raised on either poor or standard diet and then mated in the four possible sex-by-parental diet crosses. Females that were raised on poor food produced larger offspring than females that were raised on standard food. Furthermore, male progeny sired by fathers that were raised on poor food were larger than male progeny sired by males raised on standard food. Development times were shortest for offspring whose one parent (mother or the father) was raised on standard and the other parent on poor food and longest for offspring whose parents both were raised on poor food. No evidence for transgenerational effects of parental diet on offspring disease resistance was found. Although paternal effects have been previously demonstrated in D. melanogaster, no earlier studies have investigated male-mediated transgenerational effects of diet in this species. The results highlight the importance of not only considering the relative contribution each parental sex has on progeny performance but also the combined effects that the two sexes may have on offspring performance.  相似文献

Understanding why females mate multiply is a major issue in evolutionary ecology. We investigated the consequences of an asynchronous arrival pattern on male competition and multiple paternity in the apparently monoandrous agile frog ( Rana dalmatina ). The largest frogs arrived first and both males and females lost weight significantly during the spawning period. Asynchronous arrival at breeding sites resulted in a male-biased operational sex ratio (OSR). The OSR was more strongly male-biased at the beginning and at the end of the breeding period when the number of satellite males increased. All females mated only once, but multiple paternity within clutches occurred at the beginning and the end of the breeding period. The influence of asynchronous arrival and biased sex ratio suggests that reduced variance or bet-hedging promoting female fitness had only a reduced role in the evolution of polyandry, and polyandry is likely to be associated with male benefits. Polyandry in frogs can be explained either by forced mating as a result of sexual conflict or by clutch piracy. By modifying intrasexual competition, asynchronous arrival and changes in OSR may have a decisive influence upon the evolution of mating systems and favour both polyandry and stable coexistence of alternative mating behaviour.  © 2005 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2005, 86 , 191–200.  相似文献

Two new species of Multiclavula are described from Rwanda: M. akagerae , with a thallus consisting of turgescent glomerules, and M. rugaramae , with a thallus composed of flattened, rounded, marginate, and dispersed squamules. They grow on soil in frequently burned savannas or on lateritic soils in eastern Rwanda. The relationship between male parental care and paternity has been investigated in a number of avian species, but in many cases the influences of confounding factors, such as variation in male and territory quality, were not addressed. These sources of variation can be controlled for by making within-male comparisons between successive broods or within-brood comparisons between groups of fledglings in a divided brood. We studied the relationship between male parental care and paternity in the common yellowthroat ( Geothlypis trichas ) at three levels: between groups of fledglings in divided broods, between first and second broods of the same pair, and among all broods in the population. In this study we proposed three hypotheses: first, males in double-brooded pairs should provide relatively more parental care to broods in which they have higher paternity; secondly, after fledging and brood division, males should provide more care to related offspring; and finally, among all broods in the population, paternity should be related positively to male parental care. Brood division occurred in many of the broods studied; however, broods were not divided according to fledgling size or paternity. Furthermore, within divided broods, males fed within-pair and extra-pair fledglings at similar rates. For sequential broods of the same pair, male feeding rates were not associated with differences in paternity between broods. Among all broods in the population, males did not provide relatively less care to broods containing unrelated young. The lack of a relationship between male parental care and paternity suggests that either males cannot assess their paternity or the costs of reducing male parental care outweigh the benefits.  相似文献

Recent investigations of mate choice indicate that the genetic effect of sires on offspring fitness may depend on the interaction between maternal and paternal genotypes and the environmental conditions experienced by the offspring. Alternative colour morphs of the pygmy grasshopper, Tetrix subulata , represent ecological strategies that differ in body size, life history, thermoregulatory behaviour, and habitat selection. The hypothesis that selection promotes behaviours maintaining coadapted gene complexes predicts individuals to mate assortatively with respect to colour morph. On the other hand, the bet-hedging hypothesis predicts that the temporal variability of the environment inhabited by these animals may select for disassortative mating behaviour resulting in heterogeneous offspring. To distinguish between these competing hypotheses, we investigated mating behaviours using dual-choice experiments. Our results were not in agreement with the prediction of assortative mating but suggest instead that matings were random with regard to colour morph. Polyandry was common, and females mated with the second male regardless of whether the first mating was assortative or disassortative. Polyandry also was equally frequent among females in triads in which the two males belonged to different colour morphs as in triads where both males belonged to the same colour morph. A field experiment confirmed that polyandry occurred also among free-ranging individuals, and uncovered variation in mating success among male colour morphs, probably due to indirect effects of coloration on activity or habitat use.
