Ozone treatment affects pigment precursor metabolism in pine seedlings   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Five‐week‐old seedlings of Pinus halepensis Mill. and Pinus brutia Ten. were exposed to air polluted with ozone (O3) (250 nl l?1, 12 h day?1 for 4 days) or to ambient air containing ca 10–20 nl l?1 O3, in the light (180 μmol m?2 s?1 photosynthetic photon flux density [PPFD], 12 h day?1) and then fed for 24 h in the light (100 μmol m?2 s?1 PPFD) with various radioactive precursors of chlorophyll (Chl) and carotene biosynthesis: 5‐[4‐14C]‐aminolevulinic acid (14C‐ALA), l ‐[14C(U)]‐glutamic acid (14C‐Glu), or d ,l ‐[2‐14C]‐mevalonic acid (14C‐MVA). Pigments were then extracted from cotyledons and fully expanded needles. Chl a and carotene were separated by thin‐layer chromatography and high‐performance liquid chromatography and their specific activities were determined. 14C‐ALA and 14C‐Glu labels were incorporated into Chl a and carotene. Exposure to O3 did not inhibit incorporation of 14C‐ALA into Chl a molecules, but hydrolysis of Chl a showed that O3 inhibited phytol labelling of Chl a. Labelling of carotene was also inhibited by O3, but not when 14C‐MVA was used as the label. These data suggest that O3 treatment inhibits (directly or indirectly) the biosynthesis of isoprenoids from products of ALA and Glu metabolism in the plastid, but not from MVA in the cytosol. This inhibition was more prominent when 14C‐ALA was used as the label than when 14C‐Glu was the labelling precursor. A significant increase in pheophorbide a, a tetrapyrrole component of Chl a labelling, and a concomitant decrease in phytol labelling was observed following incubation of O3‐treated pine seedlings with 14C‐ALA and 14C‐Glu. Stronger inhibition of carotene biosynthesis and activation of Chl a tetrapyrrole labelling by 14C‐ALA (in comparison with 14C‐Glu) indicated that exposure to O3 inhibits the conversion of ALA to Glu as the first step in ALA catabolism. These results also suggested a more intensive Glu metabolism (in comparison with ALA) for carotene biosynthesis in the cytosol, as well as cooperation between two pathways of isopentenyl diphosphate biosynthesis.  相似文献

1. Lake Kinneret is a warm (13–30°C) monomictic lake. Between January and June a heavy annual bloom of the dinoflagellate Peridinium gatunense dominates phytoplankton biomass (250 g m?2). At the beginning of the summer, degradation and decomposition of the Peridinium biomass occurs, serving as a trigger for intense sulphate reduction in the hypolimnion and sediments. 2. The rates of sulphate reduction in the sediments varied seasonally from 12 to 1700 nmol SO4.?2 reduced cm?3 day?1 in December and July, respectively. The availability of organic matter and sulphate is high in June after the crash of the Peridinium bloom and the beginning of stratification and is lowest in December before overturn. 3. Sulphate concentrations in the hypolimnion range between 0.52 mM and 0.20 mM during mixing (January-April) and before overturn (December), respectively. The depletion in sulphate in the hypolimnion is stoichiometrically correlated to the increase in sulphide. The lake is not depleted of sulphate at any time, so the sulphate reduction process in Lake Kinneret is not limited by sulphate concentrations except in the sediments just before overturn.  相似文献

Acclimation to periodic high‐light stress was studied in tree seedlings from a neotropical forest. Seedlings of several pioneer and late‐succession species were cultivated under simulated tree‐fall gap conditions; they were placed under frames covered with shade cloth with apertures of different widths that permitted defined periods of daily leaf exposure to direct sunlight. During direct sun exposure, all plants exhibited a marked reversible decline in potential photosystem II (PSII) efficiency, determined by means of the ratio of variable to maximum Chl a fluorescence (Fv/Fm). The decline in Fv/Fm under full sunlight was much stronger in late‐succession than in pioneer species. For each gap size, all species exhibited a similar degree of de‐epoxidation of violaxanthin in direct sunlight and similar pool sizes of xanthophyll cycle pigments. Pool sizes increased with increasing gap size. Pioneer plants possessed high levels of β‐carotene that also increased with gap size, whereas α‐carotene decreased. In contrast to late‐succession plants, pioneer plants were capable of adjusting their Chl a/b ratio to a high value in wide gaps. The content of extractable UV‐B‐absorbing compounds was highest in the plants acclimated to large gaps and did not depend on the successional status of the plants. The results demonstrate a better performance of pioneer species under high‐light conditions as compared with late‐succession plants, manifested by reduced photoinhibition of PSII in pioneer species. This was not related to increased pool size and turnover of xanthophyll cycle pigments, nor to higher contents of UV‐B‐absorbing substances. High β‐carotene levels and increased Chl a/b ratios, i.e. reduced size of the Chl a and b binding antennae, may contribute to photoprotection in pioneer species.  相似文献

A long-term record dating back to the 1960s indicates that Peridinium gatunense, an armored dinoflagellate, dominated the phytoplankton of Lake Kinneret (Sea of Galilee, Israel) until the mid-1990s, with a relatively stable spring bloom. However, since 1996, these blooms became irregular, failing to develop in 10 out of the past 16 years. During the later period, a significant correlation (R 2 = 0.605, P = 0.013) was found between annual peak P. gatunense biomass and riverine inflow volume. In-lake surveys showed that patches of high P. gatunense densities were associated with water enriched with fresher inflowing Jordan River water. Supplementing laboratory cultures of P. gatunense with Hula Valley water stimulated its growth relative to un-enriched controls. A likely explanation to the recent irregular blooms of this dinoflagellate is a hydrological modification that was made in the catchment in the mid-1990s, preventing Hula Valley water from reaching Lake Kinneret in most years—except for exceptionally wet years. We propose that until the mid-1990s, the Jordan River water enriched Lake Kinneret with a growth factor (a microelement and/or organic compound) originating in the Hula Valley, which in recent years has arrived in sufficient quantities to support a bloom only in high-rainfall years.  相似文献

The superfamily of light-harvesting complex (LHC) proteins is comprised of proteins with diverse functions in light-harvesting and photoprotection. LHC proteins bind chlorophyll (Chl) and carotenoids and include a family of LHCs that bind Chl a and c. Dinophytes (dinoflagellates) are predominantly Chl c binding algal taxa, bind peridinin or fucoxanthin as the primary carotenoid, and can possess a number of LHC subfamilies. Here we report 11 LHC sequences for the chlorophyll a-chlorophyll c 2-peridinin protein complex (acpPC) subfamily isolated from Symbiodinium sp. C3, an ecologically important peridinin binding dinoflagellate taxa. Phylogenetic analysis of these proteins suggests the acpPC subfamily forms at least three clades within the Chl a/c binding LHC family; Clade 1 clusters with rhodophyte, cryptophyte and peridinin binding dinoflagellate sequences, Clade 2 with peridinin binding dinoflagellate sequences only and Clades 3 with heterokontophytes, fucoxanthin and peridinin binding dinoflagellate sequences.  相似文献

The estuarine dinoflagellate, Prorocentrum mariaelebouriae (Parke & Ballantine 1957) Faust 1974 undergoes increases in pigmentation and photosynthetic efficiency within several days of downward light shifts. These changes can be described by first-order kinetics, as has been reported previously for Chlorophyll (Chl) a in several phytoplankton species. The studies described in this paper were conducted with isolates of populations of Prorocentrum from the Chesapeake Bay. We determined rates of adaptation to low-light for cultures grown at a range of photon flux densities (I0= 2.65–26.2 E.m?2, d?1, shifted to 6.3–7.0% I0) at three temperatures (10°, 15°, and 20° C), bracketing the conditions this species experiences in situ. In this paper, I report the time-course of changes in α, Pmax Chl a, peridinin, and Ik and first-order rate constants, K1 for changes in α, Chl a and peridinin. cell?1. K1 for changes in α cell?1 averaged 1.58 × 10?2 h?1 for conditions encompassing five light treatments and three temperatures; the corresponding mean for Chl a was 1.59 × 10?2 h?1. Increases in peridinin measured for five light treatments at 15° C showed a mean K1 of 1.22 × 10?2 h?1, Average percent changes in per cell α, Chl a, and peridinin ranged from 0.4–4.0% h?1 (10–90% d?1) following exposure to low-light. Photoadaptive changes are important to Prorocentrum because in nature it occupies turbid waters (Kt≥ 0.5 m?1) where the mixing depth often exceeds the depth of the photic layer. Cells are entrained beneath a seasonally-stable density discontinuity and are exposed to very low-light (< I E.m?2.d?1) for days to weeks during subpycnocline transport. The ability of this species to undergo changes in pigmentation and photosynthetic physiology confers increased efficiency of light harvesting and contributes to this species’survival in the estuary where it is an important component of the dinoflagellate flora.  相似文献

Cultures and field samples of the toxic dinoflagellate Gymnodinium catenatum Graham from Tasmania, Australia, were analyzed for pigment, fatty acid, and sterol composition. Gymnodinium catenatum contained the characteristic pigments of photosynthetic dinoflagellates, including chlorophyll a, chlorophyll c2, and the carotenoids peridinin, dinoxanthin, diadinoxanthin, diatoxanthin, and β,β-carotene. In midlogarithmic and early stationary phase cultures, the chlorophyll a content ranged 50–72 pg · cell?1, total lipids 956–2084 pg · cell?1, total fatty acids 426–804 pg · cell?1, and total sterols 8–20 pg · cell?1. The major fatty acids (in order of decreasing abundance) were 16:0, 22:6(n-3), and 20:5(n-3) (collectively 65–70% of the total fatty acids), followed by 16:1(n-7), 18:2(n-6), and 14:0. This distribution is characteristic of most dinoflagellates, except for the low abundance (<3%) of the fatty acid 18:5(n-3), considered by some authors to be a marker for dinoflagellates. The three major sterols were 4α-methyl-5α-cholest-7-en-3β-ol, 4α,23,24-trimethyl-5α-cholest-22E-en-3β-ol (the dinoflagellate sterol, dinosterol), and 4α,23,24-trimethyl-5α-cholest-7-en-3β-ol. These three sterols comprised about 75% of the total sterols in both logarithmic and early stationary phase cultures, and they were also found in high proportions (22–25%) in natural dinoflagellate bloom samples. 4-Desmethyl sterols, which are common in most microalgae, were only present in trace amounts in G. catenatum. The chemotaxonomic affinities of G. catenatum and the potential for using specific signature lipids for monitoring toxic dinoflagellate blooms are discussed.  相似文献

Spectrophotometric and paper chromatographic analyses of the pigments in the phytoplankton were made from early spring till the end of summer in two small Dutch freshwater lakes. It was found that pigment diversity cannot be adequately estimated by MARGALEF'S pigment ratio nor by polychromatic spectrophotometric methods. The pigments detected with the paper chromatographic method were: chlorophyll-a, chlorophyll-b, chlorophyll-c, phaeophytin-a (traces), phaeophorbide-a, Mg-containing chlorophyll-derivatives, carotene, lutein, violaxanthin, neoxanthin (traces), fucoxanthin, diadinoxanthin, diatoxanthin (traces), peridinin and keto-carotenoids (traces). It is suggested to distinguish between a richness-component and an evenness-component of pigment diversity.  相似文献

High-resolution reflectance spectra in the range of 400–850nm were obtained from Lake Kinneret during a period when densepopulations of the dinoflagellate Peridinium gatunense dominatedthe phytoplankton. Chlorophyll (Chl) concentrations ranged from5.1 to 185 mg m–3 and from 2.4 to 187.5 mg m–3 inthe samples of two independent experiments. The most prominentfeatures of the reflectance spectra were: (i) a wide minimumfrom 400 to 500 nm; (ii) a maximum at 550–570 nm, whichdid not surpass 3% in samples with high Chl concentration (>20mgm–3), indicating a strong absorption by pigments in thegreen range of the spectrum; (iii) a minimum at 676 nm; thiswas {small tilde}1% and was almost insensitive to variationin Chl concentration >10 mg m–3; (iv) a maximum reflectanceshowed near 700 nm; its magnitude and position were highly dependenton chlorophyll concentration. High-spectral-resolution datawere used as a guideline for selection of the most suitablespectral bands for chlorophyll remote sensing. Models were devised, based on the calculation of the integrated area above the baselinefrom 670 to 850 nm and the reflectance maximal height withinthis range. Some algorithms already used m previous studieswere tested and showed a plausible degree of accuracy when appliedto the current data base. However, novel models devised in thisstudy improved substantially the accuracy of Chl estimationby remotely sensed data, by reducing the estimation error from>11 to 6.5 mg m–3 Those models were validated by anindependent data set where Chl concentration ranged over twoorders of magnitude. The use of three relatively narrow spectralbands was sufficient for Chl mapping in Lake Kinneret. Therefore,a relatively simple sensor, measuring only a few bands willbe employed in future applications for Chl monitoring in inlandwaters. Radiometric data were also used to simulate radiancesin the channels of TM Landsat and to find the algorithm forChl assessment. The ratio of channel 4 to channel 3 was usedand enabled Chl estimation with an error of <15mg m–3This algorithm was employed to map Chl in the entire area ofLake Kinneret with 10 gradations.  相似文献

Growth and pigment concentrations of the, estuarine dinoflagellate, Prorocentrum mariae-lebouriae (Parke and Ballantine) comb. nov., were measured in cultures grown in white, blue, green and red radiation at three different irradiances. White irradiances (400–800 nm) were 13.4, 4.0 and 1.8 W · m?2 with photon flux densities of 58.7 ± 3.5, 17.4 ± 0.6 and 7.8 ± 0.3 μM quanta · m?2· s?1, respectively. All other spectral qualities had the same photon flux densities. Concentrations of chlorophyll a and chlorophyll c were inversely related to irradiance. A decrease of 7- to 8-fold in photon flux density resulted in a 2-fold increase in chlorophyll a and c and a 1.6- to 2.4-fold increase in both peridinin and total carotenoid concentrations. Cells grown in green light contained 22 to 32% more peridinin per cell and exhibited 10 to 16% higher peridinin to chlorophyll a ratios than cells grown in white light. Growth decreased as a function of irradiance in white, green and red light grown cells but was the same at all blue light irradiances. Maximum growth rates occurred at 8 μM quanta · m?2· s?1 in blue light, while in red and white light maximum growth rates occurred at considerably higher photon flux densities (24 to 32 μM quanta · m?2· s?1). The fastest growth rates occurred in blue and red radiation. White radiation producing maximum growth was only as effective as red and blue light when the photon flux density in either the red or blue portion of the white light spectrum was equivalent to that of a red or of blue light treatment which produced maximum growth rates. These differences in growth and pigmentation indicate that P. mariae-lebouriae responds to the spectral quality under which it is grown.  相似文献

The psychrophilic diatom Fragilariopsis cylindrus (Grunow) Krieger in Helmcke & Krieger was used to investigate photosynthesis and growth under freezing temperatures. Gene expression during a temperature shift from +5° C to ?1.8° C was studied under 3 and 35 μmol photons·m?2·s?1 by using a macroarray. These measurements were paralleled by determination of fluorescence induction at PSII and pigment analysis. The shift to ?1.8° C at 35 μmol photons·m?2·s?1 caused a marginal decrease of photosynthetic quantum yield (Fv/Fm) from 0.61 to 0.52 with fast recovery after 1 day. The ratio of chl c to chl a increased from 3.1 to 5.5, and the ratio of diatoxanthin to diadinoxanthin increased from 0.7 to 5.0. Genes encoding proteins of PSII (psbA, psbC) and for carbon fixation (rbcL) were down‐regulated, whereas genes encoding chaperons (hsp70) and genes for plastid protein synthesis and turnover (elongation factor EfTs, ribosomal protein rpS4, ftsH protease) were up‐regulated. In contrast, cold exposure at 3 μmol photons·m?2·s?1 induced a marginal increase in Fv/Fm from 0.61 to 0.63 and a strong increase in fucoxanthin concentrations from 0.04 up to 0.12 pg·cell?1. This was paralleled by up‐regulation of fcp genes. The ratio of chl c to chl a also increased from 3.1 to 4.2, as did the ratio of diatoxanthin to diadinoxanthin from 0.7 to 2.2. Down‐regulation of psbA, psbC, and rbcL could also be measured but not up‐regulation of hsp70, EfTs, rpS4, and the ftsH protease. The latter genes are probably necessary to avoid cold shock photoinhibition only at higher light intensities.  相似文献

The relationship between chlorophyll a (Chl a) and primary productivity(PP) in the uppermost water layer and the water column-based(0–15 m) integral values of those variables were examinedusing measurements taken in Lake Kinneret (Israel) from 1990to 2003. In 81% of all Chl a profiles examined, the distributionwas fairly uniform within the entire 0–15 m water column, and 12.3% of instances showed a prominent subsurface maximum, when the lake phytoplankton was dominated by the dinoflagellatePeridinium gatunense. Chl a can be reliably estimated by remotesensing techniques in the productive and turbid water of LakeKinneret, since Chl a concentration at surface layers can beextrapolated to the entire water column. Light vertical attenuationcoefficient average for wavelengths from 400 to 700 nm, Kd,ranged from 0.203 to 1.954 m–1 and showed high degreeof temporal variation. The maximal rate of photosynthetic efficiency,PBopt [average 3.16 (±1.50)], ranged from 0.25 to 8.85mg C m–3 h–1 mg Chl a–1. Using measured dataof Chl a, PBopt, and light as an input, a simple depth-integratedPP model allowed plausible simulation of PP. However, a lackof correlation between photosynthetic activity and temperature(or other variable with remotely sensed potential) renders theuse of models that require input of photosynthetic efficiencyto calculate integrated PP of little value in the case of productiveand turbid Lake Kinneret.  相似文献

In spring 2005, monthly sampling was carried out at a sublittoral site near Tautra Island. Microphytobenthic identification, abundance (ABU), and biomass (BIOM), were performed by microscopic analyses. Bacillariophyceae accounted for 67% of the total ABU, and phytoflagellates constituted 30%. The diatom floristic list consisted of 38 genera and 94 species. Intact light‐harvesting pigments chl a, chl c, and fucoxanthin and their derivatives were identified and quantified by HPLC. Photoprotective carotenoids were also observed (only as diadinoxanthin; no diatoxanthin was detected). Average fucoxanthin content was 4.57 ± 0.45 μg fucoxanthin · g sediment dry mass?1, while the mean chl a concentration was 2.48 ± 0.15 μg · g?1 dry mass. Both the high fucoxanthin:chl a ratio (considering nondegraded forms) and low amounts of photoprotective carotenoids indicated that the benthic microalgal community was adapted to low light. Microphytobenthic primary production was estimated in situ (MPPs, from 0.15 to 1.28 mg C · m?2 · h?1) and in the laboratory (MPPp, from 6.79 to 34.70 mg C · m?2 · h?1 under light saturation) as 14C assimilation; in April it was additionally estimated from O2‐microelectrode studies (MPPO2) along with the community respiration. MPPO2 and the community respiration equaled 22.9 ± 7.0 and 7.4 ± 1.8 mg C · m?2 · h?1, respectively. A doubling of BIOM from April to June in parallel with a decreasing photosynthetic activity per unit chl a led us to suggest that the microphytobenthic community was sustained by heterotrophic metabolism during this period.  相似文献

1. Chlorophyll a (Chl a) distribution across a 0.36 km2 restored floodplain (Cosumnes River, California) was analysed throughout the winter and spring flood season from January to June 2005. In addition, high temporal‐resolution Chl a measurements were made in situ with field fluorometers in the floodplain and adjacent channel. 2. The primary objectives were to characterise suspended algal biomass distribution across the floodplain at various degrees of connection with the channel and to correlate Chl a concentration and distribution with physical and chemical gradients across the floodplain. 3. Our analysis indicates that periodic connection and disconnection of the floodplain with the channel is vital to the functioning of the floodplain as a source of concentrated suspended algal biomass for downstream aquatic ecosystems. 4. Peak Chl a levels on the floodplain occurred during disconnection, reaching levels as high as 25 μg L?1. Chl a distribution across the floodplain was controlled by residence time and local physical/biological conditions, the latter of which were primarily a function of water depth. 5. During connection, the primary pond on the floodplain exhibited low Chl a (mean = 3.4 μg L?1) and the shallow littoral zones had elevated concentrations (mean = 4.6 μg L?1); during disconnection, shallow zone Chl a increased (mean = 12.4 μg L?1), but the pond experienced the greatest algal growth (mean = 14.7 μg L?1). 6. Storm‐induced floodwaters entering the floodplain not only displaced antecedent floodplain waters, but also redistributed floodplain resources, creating complex mixing dynamics between parcels of water with distinct chemistries. Incomplete replacement of antecedent floodplain waters led to localised hypoxia in non‐flushed areas. 7. The degree of complexity revealed in this analysis makes clear the need for high‐resolution spatial and temporal studies such as this to begin to understand the functioning of dynamic and heterogeneous floodplain ecosystems.  相似文献

Paralytic shellfish toxins, pigment composition, and large subunit (LSU) rDNA sequence were analyzed for a clonal culture of Alexandrium minutum Halim isolated in 2000 from the coastal Fleet Lagoon, Dorset, United Kingdom. The HPLC pigment analysis revealed the presence of chl a, peridinin, and diadinoxanthin as major pigments and chl c1+c2 and c3, diatoxanthin, and β‐carotene as minor components. The toxins responsible for paralytic shellfish poisoning were analyzed by HPLC with postcolumn derivatization and fluorescence detection. The paralytic shellfish poisoning toxin profile of the Fleet Lagoon strain of A. minutum in exponential growth phase was dominated by gonyautoxin‐3 up to 54%, whereas gonyautoxin‐2 made up 10% and saxitoxin (STX) 36%. The average toxicity of the culture was 3.8 pg STX Eq·cell?1, and total toxin content varied from 5.6 fmol·cell?1 on day 1 to a maximum of 16.8 fmol·cell?1 during the early stationary phase. Sequence analysis of the LSU rDNA revealed the strain to be closely related to several European strains of A. minutum and one isolated from Australian waters, although most of these do not produce STX. The shallow Fleet Lagoon may provide a favorable environment for A. minutum to bloom, and the presence of highly potent saxitoxins in this strain indicates potential for future shellfish contamination.  相似文献

1. Phytoplankton abundance and species composition in Lake Kinneret, Israel, have been monitored at weekly or fortnightly intervals since 1969. This paper summarises the resulting 34‐year phytoplankton record with a focus on the last 13 years of new data, and reassesses an earlier conclusion that the lake phytoplankton shows remarkable stability despite a wide range of external pressures. 2. The Kinneret phytoplankton record can be split into two major periods. The first, from 1969 till 1993, was a period of distinct stability expressed by a typical annual pattern revolving around a spring bloom of the dinoflagellate Peridinium gatunense that repeated each year. The second period, starting around 1994 and ongoing, is characterised by the loss of the previously predictable annual pattern, with both ‘bloom years’ and ‘no‐bloom years’. 3. In the second period, deviations from the previous annual pattern include: the absence of the prevailing spring P. gatunense blooms in some years and increased variability in the magnitude of the bloom in others; intensification of winter Aulacoseira granulata blooms; higher summer phytoplankton biomass with replacement of mostly nanoplanktonic, palatable forms by less palatable forms; new appearance and establishment of toxin‐producing, nitrogen fixing cyanobacteria in summer; increase in the absolute biomass and percentage contribution of cyanobacteria to total biomass; and fungal epidemics attacking P. gatunense. 4. The 34‐year record serves to validate Schindler's (1987) assessment that phytoplankton species composition will respond to increased anthropogenic stress before bulk ecosystem parameters.  相似文献

The Peridinin-Chlorophyll a-Protein (PCP) complex has both an exceptionally efficient light-harvesting ability and a highly effective protective capacity against photodynamic reactions involving singlet oxygen. These functions can be attributed to presence of a substantial amount of the highly-substituted and complex carotenoid, peridinin, in the protein and the facts that the low-lying singlet states of peridinin are higher in energy than those of chlorophyll (Chl) a, but the lowest-lying triplet state of peridinin is below that of Chl a. Thus, singlet energy can be transferred from peridinin to Chl a, but the Chl a triplet state is quenched before it can sensitize the formation of singlet oxygen. The present investigation takes advantage of Chl a as an effective triplet state donor to peridinin and explores the triplet state spectra and dynamics of a systematic series of peridinin analogs having different numbers of conjugated carbon–carbon double bonds. The carotenoids investigated are peridinin, which has a C37 carbon skeleton and eight conjugated carbon–carbon double bonds, and three synthetic analogs: C33-peridinin, having two less double bonds than peridinin, C35-peridinin which has one less double bond than peridinin, and C39-peridinin which has one more double bond than peridinin. In this study, the behavior of the triplet state spectra and kinetics exhibited by these molecules has been investigated in polar and nonpolar solvents and reveals a substantial effect of both π-electron conjugated chain length and solvent environment on the spectral lineshapes. However, only a small dependence of these factors is observed on the kinetics of triplet energy transfer from Chl a and on carotenoid triplet state deactivation to the ground state.  相似文献

This paper presents results of field studies on the estuarine dinoflagellate Prorocentrum mariae-lebouriae (Parke & Ballantine) Faust in Chesapeake Bay. We tested the hypothesis that the photosynthetic physiology of Prorocentrum shows adaptive responses to low-light during a lengthy subpycnocline transport in estuarine circulation. Prorocentrum underwent a seasonal, northward trnasport between February and June, 1984 and 1985. Low cell densities occurred in the seaward part of the estuary during winter and early-spring, subpycnocline populations progressed up-estuary in the ensuring 2–3 months, and dense surface populations developed in the mesohaline portion of the estuary thereafter. We sampled Prorocentrum from surface and subpycnocline waters and measured photosynthesis-light (P-I) relations with in situ incubations. The photophysiology of Prorocentrum collected below the pycnoline differed from that of cells in the surface mixed layer in that photosynthetic efficiency, α-cell?1, was higher, photosynthetic capacity, Pmax-cell?1 was ·4 times greater for subpycnocline (≦ 10m) samples than for those from the surface mixed layer (≧ 6m). Comparison of in situ photosynthetic properties to those generated in laboratory studies showed that values of α·cell?1 for both surface and subpycnocline samples were in the range found for cultures in low-light. Concentrations of Chls a, c and peridinin·cell?1 and molar pigment ratios peridinin: Chl a and Chl a: Chl c were not significantly different for the surface and subpycnocline samples, nor were C · cell?1 or C : Chl a. Chloroplast and starch volume fractions and the number of thylakoids were the same for samples collected at different depths, and there was no evidence of cytoplasmic vacuolization in any field samples. These morphometric data for cells from natural populations of Prorocentrum most closely resembled data for laboratory cultures grown at or near 2.6E·m-?2·4d?1. A lower growth irradiance of 0.3E·m?2·d?1 produced indications of stress in cultures, including starch depletion and vacuolization, that were never observed in natural populations. Based on the combination of these findings, we conclude that Prorocentrum is adapted to low-light both in the surface mixed layer and beneath the pycnocline, although certain photophysiological characteristics distinguish these two groups of samples.  相似文献

We studied the seasonal variation in carbon dioxide, water vapour and energy fluxes in a broad‐leafed semi‐arid savanna in Southern Africa using the eddy covariance technique. The open woodland studied consisted of an overstorey dominated by Colophospermum mopane with a sparse understorey of grasses and herbs. Measurements presented here cover a 19‐month period from the end of the rainy season in March 1999 to the end of the dry season September 2000. During the wet season, sensible and latent heat fluxes showed a linear dependence on incoming solar radiation (I) with a Bowen ratio (β) typically just below unity. Although β was typically around 1 at low incoming solar radiation (150 W m?2) during the dry season, it increased dramatically with I, typically being as high as 4 or 5 around solar noon. Thus, under these water‐limited conditions, almost all available energy was dissipated as sensible, rather than latent heat. Marked spikes of CO2 release occurred at the onset of the rainfall season after isolated rainfall events and respiration dominated the balance well into the rainfall season. During this time, the ecosystem was a constant source of CO2 with an average flux of 3–5 μmol m?2 s?1 to the atmosphere during both day and night. But later in the wet season, for example, in March 2000 under optimal soil moisture conditions, with maximum leaf canopy development (leaf area index 0.9–1.3), the peak ecosystem CO2 influx was as much as 10 μmol m?2 s?1. The net ecosystem maximum photosynthesis at this time was estimated at 14 μmol m?2 s?1, with the woodland ecosystem a significant sink for CO2. During the dry season, just before leaf fall in August, maximum day‐ and night‐time net ecosystem fluxes were typically ?3 μmol m?2 s?1 and 1–2 μmol m?2 s?1, respectively, with the ecosystem still being a marginal sink. Over the course of 12 months (March 1999–March 2000), the woodland was more or less carbon neutral, with a net uptake estimated at only about 1 mol C m?2 yr?1. The annual net photosynthesis (gross primary production) was estimated at 32.2 mol m?2 yr?1.  相似文献

Increasing ocean temperatures due to global warming are predicted to have negative effects on coral reef fishes. El Niño events are associated with elevated water temperatures at large spatial (1000s of km) and temporal (annual) scales, providing environmental conditions that enable temperature effects on reef fishes to be tested directly. We compared remote sensing data of sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies, surface current flow and chlorophyll‐a (Chl‐a) concentration with monthly patterns in larval supply of coral reef fishes in nearshore waters around Rangiroa Atoll (French Polynesia) from January 1996 to March 2000. This time included an intense El Niño (April 1997–May 1998) event between two periods of La Niña (January–March 1996 and August 1998–March 2000) conditions. There was a strong relationship between the timing of the El Niño event, current flow, ocean productivity (as measured by Chl‐a) and larval supply. In the warm conditions of the event, there was an increase in the SST anomaly index up to 3.5 °C above mean values and a decrease in the strength of the westward surface current toward the reef. These conditions coincided with low concentrations of Chl‐a (mean: 0.06 mg m?3, SE ± 0.004) and a 51% decline in larval supply from mean values. Conversely, during strong La Niña conditions when SST anomalies were almost 2 °C below mean values and there was a strong westward surface current, Chl‐a concentration was 150% greater than mean values and larval supply was 249% greater. A lag in larval supply suggested that productivity maybe affecting both the production of larvae by adults and larval survival. Our results suggest that warming temperatures in the world's oceans will have negative effects on the reproduction of reef fishes and survival of their larvae within the plankton, ultimately impacting on the replenishment of benthic populations.  相似文献
