Oak nut weevil (Mechoris ursulus Roelofs) females lay eggs in acorns and cut off the branch of oviposited acorns. We investigated the relationship between oviposition preference and offspring performance (growth and survival). M. ursulus appeared to estimate the size of an acorn by walking around it before and after oviposition. When we offered paired acorns of different sizes, females showed strong preference for larger acorns. In the field, egg-bearing acorns were larger than egg-free acorns in cut branches. A parallel series of experiments was conducted to assess the influence of acorn size on offspring performance. Larvae and newly emerged adults from larger acorns were heavier than those from smaller acorns. However, acorn size did not affect the survivorship of larvae. We also tested if M. ursulus avoided oviposited acorns, but there was no evidence that M. ursulus could assess the presence of eggs in acorns. Electronic Publication  相似文献

We investigated the effects of temperature, photoperiod, food and host availability, and body size on the overwintering abilities of the egg parasitoid Anaphes nitens Girault (Hymenoptera, Mymaridae) under natural conditions. Seven groups of eighty females received one of four treatments (n = 20): (i) honey and hosts, (ii) water and hosts, (iii) honey, or (iv) water. Seven groups of forty males received only honey or water (n = 20). To test if short day-length is the main cue for larval dormancy, the experiment was replicated inside a climate chamber at 20°C and under a winter photoperiod. A. nitens overwinters because of quiescence or oligopause inside the hosts and increased adult longevity. Mean pre-emergence mortality was up to 26% indoors and 15.2% outdoors, males being more affected. Development time had a significant and positive effect on body size. Honey-fed females without hosts had the highest longevity (53 days). Mother’s diet and size affected development time, body size, longevity, and fecundity of the progeny. The results confirm the good adaptation of the parasitoid to the environmental conditions of NW Spain and its ability to synchronize its life cycle with the phenology of the host. The study of oxidative stress is a potential tool for studying the functional interactions among life history traits, sexual traits and physiological status in animals. In this study, we investigated relationships between measures of plasma oxidative status and male sexual traits, female reproductive investment and three other life history traits, in a wild population of collared flycatchers (Ficedula albicollis). Flycatcher males with a larger white forehead patch had higher level of plasma antioxidant capacity. For females, clutch size was not associated with plasma oxidative status, but egg size was positively correlated with antioxidant capacity. The relationship between age and levels of plasma oxidative damage remains controversial in this species: young female flycatchers showed higher levels of hydroperoxides compared to antioxidants, whereas age did not predict oxidative status of males. Males had higher levels of oxidative damage than females, although the concentration of antioxidant compounds was similar between the sexes. Females that mated with more ornamented males had higher plasma antioxidant capacity. Our results suggest that, for males and females, greater investment in sexual signal and reproduction, respectively, does not reduce the capacity for self-maintenance or avoidance of oxidative stress. Finally, our data support indirectly the occurrence of assortative mating in our species, since females with higher plasma antioxidant capacity mated with more ornamented males.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to measure the possible effects of prolonged parental care on offspring growth in Korean wood-feeding cockroaches, Cryptocercus kyebangensis. In the field-caught subsocial woodroaches of C. kyebangensis, offspring with both parents were greater in both head width and body weight than those with single parents. Manipulation experiments showed that offspring separated from their parents could survive independently without parents, but they grew more rapidly when they remained with their parents. In particular, the effects of parental care on offspring growth were found to be stronger in groups with both parents than those with single parents. These results suggest that the prolonged parental care evolved in Cryptocercus has a significant impact on offspring growth. Electronic Publication  相似文献

The absence of essential biochemical nutrients, such as polyunsaturated fatty acids or sterols, has been considered as a mechanism determining trophic interactions between the herbivore Daphnia and its phytoplankton food source. Here, we experimentally quantify the sensitivity of two Daphnia species to decreasing amounts of dietary sterols by measuring variations in life history traits. The two species Daphnia magna and D. galeata were fed different mixtures of the sterol-containing green alga Scenedesmus obliquus and the sterol-free cyanobacterium Synechococcus elongatus; a higher proportion of Synechococcus in the food is equivalent to a decrease in dietary sterols. To address the significance of sterol limitation, the Daphnia species were also fed Synechococcus supplemented with cholesterol. In both species, somatic and population growth rates, maternal dry mass, the number of viable offspring, and the probability of survival were significantly reduced with the lower availability of sterols. A high correlation between the sterol content of the mixed diet and the somatic and population growth rates was found, and growth on cholesterol-supplemented Synechococcus fitted well into this correlation. Somatic growth of first-clutch neonates grown on 100% Synechococcus exhibited a pattern similar to that of somatic growth of their mothers grown on the different food regimes, which demonstrated the significance of maternal effects for sterol-limited population growth. Daphnia galeata had a twofold higher incipient limiting sterol level than D. magna, which indicated interspecific differences in sterol requirements between the two Daphnia species. The results suggest a strong impact of dietary sterols on life history traits and therefore, population dynamics of the keystone species Daphnia.  相似文献

The toxicity of three common antibiotics (streptomycin sulfate, tetracycline hydrochloride, and tylosin tartrate) to the freshwater rotifer Brachionus calyciflorus and brackish-water rotifer B. plicatilis was investigated using full-lifespan exposure durations. Effects of each antibiotic on lifespan, lifetime reproduction, and Malthusian parameter were assessed at seven nominal concentrations (ranging from 5.6 mg l−1 to 2,000 mg l−1) and a negative control. Lowest Observed Effect Concentrations (LOECs) were determined for reproduction and lifespan, while 1%, 10%, 25%, and 50% Inhibitory Concentrations (IC1, IC10, IC25, IC50) and 95% confidence intervals were estimated for all three endpoints. LOECs ranged from 5.6 mg l−1 to 90 mg l−1, with all LOECs less than 90 mg l−1 occurring in B. calyciflorus. The lowest IC1 concentrations were 3.91 mg l−1 for the effect of tetracycline on lifetime reproduction in B. calyciflorus and 4.06 mg l−1 for the effect of tylosin on lifetime reproduction in B. plicatilis. Overall, lifetime reproduction was the most sensitive endpoint and the Malthusian parameter was the least sensitive. A number of invertebrates show predator-induced plasticity in life-history and morphological traits that are considered adaptive. Evidence is accumulating that vertebrates may also adjust their life-history traits in response to predators; however, some of the patterns of plasticity, which appear to be an adaptive response specifically to the risk of size-selective predation, may instead result from reduced foraging in response to predator presence. Here, we describe a study of predator-induced plasticity in guppies (Poecilia reticulata). We have predicted that the plastic response to cues from a small, gape-limited, natural predator of guppies, the killlifish (Rivulus hartii), would be the opposite of that caused by reduced food intake. We have found that male guppies increased their size at maturity, both length and mass, in response to the non-lethal presence of this predator. This pattern of plasticity is the opposite of that observed in response to reduced food intake, where male guppies reduce size at maturity. The increase in size at maturity that we observed would likely reduce predation on adult male guppies by this native predator because it is gape-limited and can only eat juvenile and small adult guppies. This size advantage would be important especially because male guppies grow very little after maturity. Therefore, the pattern of plasticity that we observed is likely adaptive. In contrast, female guppies showed no significant response in size at first parturition to the experimental manipulation; however, we did find evidence suggesting that females may produce more, smaller offspring in response to cues from this predator.  相似文献

Background

Gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) is responsible for stimulation of gonadotropic hormone (GtH) in the hypothalamus-pituitary-gonadal axis (HPG). The regulatory mechanisms responsible for brain specificity make the promoter attractive for in silico analysis and reporter gene studies in zebrafish (Danio rerio).

Results

We have characterized a zebrafish [Trp7, Leu8] or salmon (s) GnRH variant, gnrh 3. The gene includes a 1.6 Kb upstream regulatory region and displays the conserved structure of 4 exons and 3 introns, as seen in other species. An in silico defined enhancer at -976 in the zebrafish promoter, containing adjacent binding sites for Oct-1, CREB and Sp1, was predicted in 2 mammalian and 5 teleost GnRH promoters. Reporter gene studies confirmed the importance of this enhancer for cell specific expression in zebrafish. Interestingly the promoter of human GnRH-I, known as mammalian GnRH (mGnRH), was shown capable of driving cell specific reporter gene expression in transgenic zebrafish.

Conclusions

The characterized zebrafish Gnrh3 decapeptide exhibits complete homology to the Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) GnRH-III variant. In silico analysis of mammalian and teleost GnRH promoters revealed a conserved enhancer possessing binding sites for Oct-1, CREB and Sp1. Transgenic and transient reporter gene expression in zebrafish larvae, confirmed the importance of the in silico defined zebrafish enhancer at -976. The capability of the human GnRH-I promoter of directing cell specific reporter gene expression in zebrafish supports orthology between GnRH-I and GnRH-III.

Three mite species are frequently found on vegetable crops in Italy: the pest Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranychidae), the predator Neoseiulus californicus (McGregor) (Acari: Phytoseiidae) and the unspecialised feeder Tydeus californicus (Banks) (Acari: Tydeidae). In laboratory trials, the direct and residual effects of six insecticides recommended for the control of aphids, whiteflies and thrips in vegetable crops, (Biopiren® plus (pyrethrins), Confidor® (imidacloprid), Oikos® (azadirachtin), Plenum® (pymetrozine), Naturalis® (Beauveria bassiana) and Rotena® (rotenone)), were evaluated for the three mite species. All the products affected the mites and their effect was often favourable towards T. urticae and unfavourable towards N. californicus and T. californicus. Rotenone was more toxic to eggs than females of T. urticae. It was highly toxic to N. californicus and caused the death of all treated females of T. californicus. Pyrethrins and imidacloprid increased T. urticae fecundity, but decreased fecundity of N. californicus. Imidacloprid decreased T. californicus fecundity more than pyrethrins. Beauveria bassiana was not toxic to T. urticae and T. californicus, but induced high mortality in the progeny of treated females of N. californicus. Azadirachtin and pymetrozine were the least toxic to T. urticae and N. californicus, but decreased production of larvae in T. californicus. Implications for integrated pest management on vegetables are discussed.  相似文献

New combinations are proposed in anticipation of the Polygonaceae treatment in the forthcoming volume of Intermountain Flora: Polygonum kelloggii var. esotericum, P. kelloggii var. watsonii , Rumex densiflorus var. pycnanthus , R. salicifolius var. utahensis, and R. occidentalis var. tomentellus. Typifications are proposed to facilitate ongoing studies in Polygonaceae and to maintain current usage.  相似文献

Two repeated DNA sequences isolated from a partial genomic DNA library of Helianthus annuus, p HaS13 and p HaS211, were shown to represent portions of the int gene of a Ty3 /gypsy retroelement and of the RNase-Hgene of a Ty1 /copia retroelement, respectively. Southern blotting patterns obtained by hybridizing the two probes to BglII- or DraI-digested genomic DNA from different Helianthus species showed p HaS13 and p HaS211 were parts of dispersed repeats at least 8 and 7 kb in length, respectively, that were conserved in all species studied. Comparable hybridization patterns were obtained in all species with p HaS13. By contrast, the patterns obtained by hybridizing p HaS211 clearly differentiated annual species from perennials. The frequencies of p HaS13- and p HaS211-related sequences in different species were 4.3x10(4)-1.3x10(5) copies and 9.9x10(2)-8.1x10(3) copies per picogram of DNA, respectively. The frequency of p HaS13-related sequences varied widely within annual species, while no significant difference was observed among perennial species. Conversely, the frequency variation of p HaS211-related sequences was as large within annual species as within perennials. Sequences of both families were found to be dispersed along the length of all chromosomes in all species studied. However, Ty3 /gypsy-like sequences were localized preferentially at the centromeric regions, whereas Ty1/ copia-like sequences were less represented or absent around the centromeres and plentiful at the chromosome ends. These findings suggest that the two sequence families played a role in Helianthusgenome evolution and species divergence, evolved independently in the same genomic backgrounds and in annual or perennial species, and acquired different possible functions in the host genomes.  相似文献

ANGUSTIFOLIA (AN), a plant homolog of C-terminal binding protein, controls the polar elongation of leaf cells and the trichome-branching pattern in Arabidopsis thaliana. In the present study, degenerate PCR was used to isolate an ortholog of AN, referred to as LgAN, from larch (Larix gmelinii). The LgAN cDNA is predicted to encode a protein of 646 amino acids that shows striking sequence similarity to AN proteins from other plants. The predicted amino acid sequence has a conserved NAD-dependent 2-hydroxy acid dehydrogenase (D2-HDH) motif and a plant AN-specific LxCxE/D motif at its N-terminus, as well as a plant-specific long C-terminal region. The LgAN gene is a single-copy gene that is expressed in all larch tissues. Expression of the LgAN cDNA rescued the leaf width and trichome-branching pattern defects in the angustifolia-1 (an-1) mutant of Arabidopsis, showing that the LgAN gene has effects complementary to those of AN. These results suggest that the LgAN gene has the same function as the AN gene.  相似文献

Traditionally viewed as an Andean grain crop,Chenopodium quinoa Willd. includes domesticated populations that are not Andean, and Andean populations that are not domesticated. Comparative analysis of leaf morphology and allozyme frequencies have demonstrated that Andean populations, both domesticated(quinua) and free-living(ajara), represent an exceptionally homogeneous unit that is well differentiated from allied domesticates of coastal Chile(quingua) and freeliving populations of the Argentine lowlands(C. hircinum). This pattern of relationships indicates that Andean populations represent a monophyletic crop/weed system that has possibly developed through cyclic differentiation (natural vs. human selection) and introgressive hybridization. Relative levels of variation suggest that this complex originated in the southern Andes, possibly from wild types allied withC. hircinum, with subsequent dispersal north to Colombia and south to the Chilean coast. Coastal populations were apparently isolated from post-dispersal differentiation and homogenization that occurred in the Andes. Other data point toward a center of origin in the northern Andes with secondary centers of genetic diversity subsequently developing in the southern Andes and the plains of Argentina. Comparative linkage of South American taxa, all tetraploid, with North American tetraploids of the subsection will eventually clarify this problem. While the possibility of a direct phyletic connection betweenC. quinoa and the Mexican domesticate(C. berlandieri subsp. nuttalliae,) cannot be excluded, available evidence indicates that the latter represents an autonomous lineage that is associated with the basal tetraploid, C. b. subsp.berlandieri, through var.sinuatum, whereas South American taxa show possible affinities to either var. zschackei or var.berlandieri. An extinct domesticate of eastern North America,C. b. subsp.jonesianum, represents either another instance of independent domestication, possibly from subsp. b. var.zschackei, or a northeastern outlier of subsp.nuttalliae.  相似文献

Aggregatibacter (Actinobacillus) actinomycetemcomitans P7–20 strain isolated from a periodontally diseased patient has produced a bacteriocin (named as actinomycetemcomitin) that is active against Peptostreptococcus anaerobius ATCC 27337. Actinomycetemcomitin was produced during exponential and stationary growth phases, and its amount decreased until it disappeared during the decline growth phase. It was purified by ammonium sulphate precipitation (30–60% saturation), and further by FPLC (mono-Q ionic exchange and Phenyl Superose hydrophobic interaction) and HPLC (C-18 reversed-phase). This bacteriocin loses its activity after incubation at a pH below 7.0 or above 8.0, following heating for 30 min at 45°C, and after treatment with proteolytic enzymes such as trypsin, α-chymotrypsin, and papain. Actinomycetemcomitin has a molecular mass of 20.3 KDa and it represents a new bacteriocin from A. actinomycetemcomitans.  相似文献

We have investigated the floral ontogeny of Arillastrum, Allosyncarpia, Stockwellia and Eucalyptopsis (of the eucalypt group, Myrtaceae) using scanning electron microscopy and light microscopy. Several critical characters for establishing relationships between these genera and to the eucalypts have been determined. The absence of compound petaline primordia in Arillastrum, Allosyncarpia, Stockwellia and Eucalyptopsis excludes these taxa from the eucalypt clade. Post-anthesis circumscissile abscission of the hypanthium above the ovary in Stockwellia, Eucalyptopsis and Allosyncarpia is evidence that these three taxa form a monophyletic group; undifferentiated perianth parts and elongated fusiform buds are characters that unite Stockwellia and Eucalyptopsis as sister taxa. No floral characters clearly associate Arillastrum with either the eucalypt clade or the clade of Stockwellia, Eucalyptopsis and Allosyncarpia.We gratefully acknowledge Clyde Dunlop and Bob Harwood (Northern Territory Herbarium) for collecting specimens of Allosyncarpia, and Bruce Gray (Atherton) for collecting specimens of Stockwellia. Summary Tennessee coneflower [Echinacea tennesseensis (Beadle) Small] was regenerated from flower stalks, leaf sections from flowering plants, and hypocotyls and cotyledons from seedlings. Murashige and Skoog medium (MS) supplemented with naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) at 0.54 μM and thidiazuron (TDZ) at 22.7 μM yielded the most shoots per leaf explant. NAA and 6-benzylaminopurine concentrations for optimal shoot regeneration from leaf, flower stalk, cotyledon and hypocotyl explants in MS media were 0.54 and 24.6μM, respectively. All explant types generated shoots; however, those derived from leaves and flower stalks produced the highest number of shoots per explant and highest percentage of explants with shoots. Explants cultured on media containing high levels of NAA (5.4–27 μM) formed calluses but no adventitious shoot. Leaf explants responded to a wider range of NAA concentrations than the other explant types but shoots generated from flower stalks grew the fastest. While all cytokinins tested increased the number of shoots per explant, the number of shoots in media containing TDZ was increased by nearly threefold. Regenerated shoots from all explant types cultured on MS medium supplemented with 0.25 μM indole-3-butyric acid initiated roots within 4 wk; NAA was not effective for root induction. All vernalized plantlets developed into plants that were morphologically identical to the source material.  相似文献
