Six measured sections of lignite and related sediments of the Cohansey formation were studied palynologically reconstructing the vegetation and environment at the time of deposition and ascertaining the age of the deposit. Sections were exposed in a pit located at Legler, New Jersey, approximately 3.2 km north of Lakehurst. This is the first reported study of pollen of this formation.Pollen and spores of 40 taxa, consisting of 5 cryptogams, 4 gymnosperms, and 31 angiosperms were encountered in the lignite. Quercus and associates, Gordonia, Rosaceae, Ilex, and Clethra, form the lowermost stratigraphic assemblage. A middle assemblage consists of Quercus-Nyssa in association with the Ericaceae and Polypodiaceae; Quercus-Pinus makes up the uppermost assemblage. Several, predominantly warm-temperate to tropical genera, for example, Cyrilla, Jussiaea, Engelhardia, Gordonia, and Cyathea, are also represented. Dinoflagellates in the upper portions of the sections indicate a transitory estuarine setting.The dominant vegetation of Quercus, Pinus, Carya, and the warm-temperate genera, depict a climate generally warmer and wetter than at present. Pollen assemblages reflect a local environment that was subject to marine transgession and subsequent regression. The age of the deposit is believed to be late Miocene or early Pliocene.  相似文献

This paper explains the Canadian decision process following the isolation and identification of A/New Jersey/8/76 at Fort Dix, New Jersey in February 1976. The cause for concern was the emergence of a swine-like strain related to that which caused the 1918-19 pandemic, together with proved man-to-man transmission. This concern was reinforced since all new influenza A strains known to have infected the number of persons involved at Fort Dix have become strains of epidemic importance. The Fort Dix outbreak gave sufficient warning to allow implementation of a national vaccination program, to prevent and protect against influenza. In the past such an opportunity had not occurred, and vaccine use had, at best, constituted an intervention in the course of an outbreak. The National Advisory Committee on Immunizing Agents had all available information when it reached its decision to recommend vaccination with bivalent (A/Victoria and A/New Jersey) or with monovalent (A/New Jersey) vaccine for selective, high-risk groups. This was an independent, scientifically based decision.  相似文献

The New Jersey serotype of vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) was able to synthesize a small RNA (leader RNA) approximately 70 bases in length similar to the leader RNA synthesized in vitro by the genetically distinct Indiana serotype of VSV. Also, the New Jersey leader RNA contained the same 5'-terminal sequence, ppA-C-G, as the Indiana leader RNA and had a very similar base composition, with 42% AMP, 16% CMP, 18.6% GMP, and 23.4% UMP. The 3'-terminal sequence of the VSV New Jersey genome RNA was detemined and found to contain the sequence- Py-G-UOH, again the same as that of the Indiana serotype of VSV. Evidence that the New Jersey leader RNA is transcribed from the 3' end of the genome RNA was obtained from the fact that it can protect the 3'-terminal base of [3H]borohydride-labeled New Jersey genome RNA from RNase digestion. Although the New Jersey and Indiana leader RNAs were similar in many respects, they were unable to form RNase-resistant hybrids when annealed to heterologous genome RNA.  相似文献

Variation in thermal constraints on activity has been hypothesized to be an important ecological source of geographic variation in growth rates of juvenile eastern fence lizards Sceloporus undulatus. However, most of the evidence to support this hypothesis is either inferential or indirect. In this study, I quantitatively compared thermal constraints on activity and their relationship to growth rates of free-ranging juvenile fence lizards from two extremes of the range of variation in growth rate (Nebraska and New Jersey) used in a reciprocal transplant experiment. I also examined energy allocation made to growth and storage by yearling lizards. Reduced growth rates in New Jersey of normally fast-growing hatchlings from Nebraska were associated with a more stringent thermal constraint on activity corresponding to a 2-3-h shorter predicted daily activity period in New Jersey compared to Nebraska. The thermal constraint on activity was particularly strong (24% less time available in New Jersey compared to Nebraska) during the period when hatchling lizards emerge (August-October). An 8% reduction in total activity time available over the course of a single year was associated with a 7% reduction in the total amount of energy accumulated by lizards in New Jersey. Differences in the total amount of energy available for allocation were also accompanied by differences in how energy was allocated. Lizards from New Jersey had an allocatable energy pool of approximately 40.34 kJ (88% to growth, 12% to storage, and 0% to reproduction). Lizards from Nebraska had an allocatable pool of 43.44 kJ (22% to growth, 18% to storage, and 60% to reproduction). This study joins others in advocating and illustrating an integrative approach to determining the causes and consequences of life-history variation by combining experimental, comparative, and phylogenetic methods in a single system.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Alexandrium tamarense (Lebour) Balech (= Gonyaulax tamarensis Lebour) has been widely distributed and occasionally abundant in coastal waters of Long Island, New York in recent years. However, the distribution on the New Jersey coast has been sparse and this fact cannot be explained by this dinoflagellate's ability to migrate, or by its nutritional and physiological characteristics, or by the region's general suitability for phytoplankton. Therefore, the possibility that New Jersey coastal waters might be chemically exclusionary for A. tamarense seemed worth exploring. In a limited approach, we tested for water quality detrimental to the species in one New Jersey site (Great Bay) with a series of annual assays. Parsonage Creek, Long Island, New York, was assayed for comparison; this creek is assumed to have had at least marginal suitablity for A. tamarense , based on its reported long-term presence. Results provide tentative support for our working hypothesis, i.e. Great Bay chemical water quality is generally unfavorable for A. tamarense. Inhibition of A. tamarense growth, or culture decline, occurred in both assay series, but was substantially greater in Great Bay water. Inimical water quality was the most important factor distinguishing the two sites. Chelation with EDTA had greatest overall benefit in Great Bay assays, suggesting that lower availability of a natural chelator in the bay could be a secondary factor. Assay metal response is problematic, but we believe it permits speculation that essential metals could be partially limiting to A. tamarense in Great Bay, but would not be a critical regulator.  相似文献

From 1985 to 1989, 491 serum samples were collected from white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) on Ossabaw Island, Georgia (USA) and were tested for neutralizing antibodies to New Jersey and Indiana type vesicular stomatitis viruses. Prevalence of antibodies to vesicular stomatitis New Jersey (VSNJ) virus in deer for the 5-yr period was 43%. Prevalence of antibodies differed by year (P less than 0.0001), and was dependent on age class (P less than 0.0001) and location on the island (P less than 0.0001). Of 173 deer sampled from other locations in the southeastern United States, only two had VSNJ antibody titers normally considered positive (greater than or equal to 1: 32). The positive deer were from Union County, Arkansas (USA) and Wakulla County, Florida (USA). No evidence of exposure to vesicular stomatitis Indiana Virus was observed.  相似文献

The present study was conducted to assess the distribution of genetic variation within and among populations of Chamaecyparis thyoides in both marginal and centrally located populations. Allozyme frequency analyses of ten loci from foliage of four New Jersey populations and two North Carolina populations of C. thyoides showed polymorphic loci = 50%, mean number of alleles per locus = 2.8, effective number of alleles per locus = 1.17, and expected heterozygosity = 0.14. Diversity was highest in two populations from southern New Jersey. The isolated population at High Point, New Jersey had only two polymorphic loci and expected heterozygosity of 0.03. There was no correlation between genetic and geographic distances among populations, implying that cedar must have possessed some means of long-distance dispersal at the end of the last glacial period, rather than advancing northward step by step.  相似文献

The nucleotide sequence of the mRNA encoding the glycoprotein from the New Jersey serotype of vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) was determined from a cDNA clone containing the entire coding region. The sequence of 12 5'-terminal noncoding nucleotides present in the mRNA but not in the cDNA clone was determined from a primer extended to the 5' terminus of the mRNA. The mRNA is 1,573 nucleotides long (excluding polyadenylic acid) and encodes a protein of 517 amino acids. Only six nucleotides occur between the translation termination codon and the polyadenylic acid. Short homologies between the untranslated termini of this mRNA and the mRNAs of the Indiana serotype were found. The predicted protein sequence was compared with that of the glycoprotein of the Indiana serotype of VSV and with the glycoprotein of rabies virus, using a computer program which determines optimal alignment. An amino acid identity of 50.9% was found for the two VSV serotypes. Approximately 20% identity was found between the rabies virus and VSV New Jersey glycoproteins. The positions and sizes of the transmembrane domains, the signal sequences, and the glycosylation sites are identical in both VSV serotypes. Two of five serine residues which were possible esterification sites for palmitate in the glycoprotein from the Indiana serotype are changed to glycine residues in the glycoprotein from the New Jersey serotype. Because the glycoprotein of the New Jersey serotype does not contain esterified palmitate, we suggest that one or both of these residues are the probable esterification sites in the glycoprotein from the Indiana serotype.  相似文献

Black flies are a perennial pest problem in New Jersey, and paramount among them are the S. jenningsi group species. Pollution tolerance values are reported for the 39 species of black flies known in New Jersey. Morphologically similar species were identified chromosomally to ensure accurate identification. Species of the same genus varied markedly in tolerance values, questioning the accuracy of generic-level tolerance values for the Simuliidae. An index for predicting the colonization and spread in New Jersey of the Simulium jenningsi group, which includes the major pest species of black flies in the eastern United States, is proposed, with implications for control programs worldwide.  相似文献

The purpose of this research was the comparison of inflorescence and fruiting characters of populations of Danthonia sericea in relation to both latitude and habitat. Mature panicles were collected in 1969 and 1970 from six New Jersey (three well drained and three bog) and four Georgia (two in well-drained sites and two in seepage areas adjacent to granite outcrops) populations. Data analyses showed significant differences between population groupings based on latitude (New Jersey vs. Georgia) and habitat (well drained vs. wet). Populations from the wetter sites had significantly longer lemmas; populations from the well-drained sites had a significantly greater number of spikelets per panicle. Number of spikelets per panicle in Georgia populations significantly exceeded that of New Jersey populations, while caryopses in the New Jersey populations were significantly heavier. In both New Jersey and Georgia, populations from the relatively drier sites had significantly heavier caryopses and a greater percentage of florets with caryopses. Since the well-drained group and the Georgia group both had a greater number of florets and a greater percentage of florets with caryopses, these two groups were shown to have the greatest reproductive proficiency. Possible adaptive significance of differences in number of seed produced and in seed weight is discussed.  相似文献

The in vitro RNA synthesis by the virion-associated RNA polymerase of vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV), New Jersey serotype, was compared with that of the serologically distinct Indiana serotype of VSV. The New Jersey serotype of VSV synthesized five distinct mRNA species in vitro, three of which were smaller than the corresponding species synthesized by the Indiana serotype of VSV. These included the mRNA's coding for the G, M, and NS proteins. By hybridization experiments, virtually no sequence homology was detected between the mRNA's of the two serotypes. Despite this lack of overall homology, the 12 to 18S mRNA species of both serotype contained a common 5'-terminal hexanucleotide sequence, G(5')ppp(5')A-A-C-A-G. The signicance of this finding in light of specific interactions between the two serotypes of VSV in vivo is discussed.  相似文献

From 1978 to 1982, 117 cases of Lyme disease were reported in New Jersey. The number of cases increased each year from four in 1978 and 1979 to 56 in 1982. Forty-eight percent of cases occurred in a four-township area in central Monmouth County. The proportion of cases with arthritis decreased in 1982 because of early antibiotic treatment and better reporting of milder cases. The proportion of cases with positive serology increased with severity of the clinical syndrome. About 25 percent of patients had exposure to ticks because of occupations that required outdoor activities. Lyme disease is a growing public health problem in New Jersey.  相似文献

In geographically widespread ectotherms, variation in life history phenotypes may be caused by differences in maintenance metabolism of individuals. I estimated daily and annual maintenance metabolism of eastern fence lizards, Sceloporus undulatus, from two populations with markedly different life histories; lizards in South Carolina grow faster, mature earlier, and have greater annual reproductive output than lizards in New Jersey. I measured diel cycles of resting metabolic rate (RMR) at four temperatures (20 degrees, 30 degrees, 33 degrees, and 36 degrees C) during spring, summer, and fall. In all seasons, RMR increased significantly from 20 degrees to 33 degrees C but did not differ significantly between 33 degrees and 36 degrees C. Adults from New Jersey had a higher RMR than adults from South Carolina in summer and fall but not in spring. Juveniles from South Carolina had a higher RMR than juveniles from New Jersey in summer but not in spring or fall. Annual maintenance metabolism of New Jersey lizards (53.7 kJ) was greater than that of South Carolina lizards (45.8 kJ), despite the shorter duration of activity in New Jersey. I conclude that the difference in maintenance metabolism between populations contributes to the greater production by S. undulatus in South Carolina.  相似文献

The persistence of serum antibodies 1 year after immunization with a bivalent vaccine containing recombinant viruses that were antigenically identical with A/Victoria/3/75 (H3N2) and A/New Jersey/8/76 (Hsw1N1) viruses was measured in 128 persons aged 18 to 65 years. Serum samples were tested with the hemagglutination inhibition assay against the two vaccine antigens and against A/Texas/1/77 (H3N2) and A/USSR/90/77 (H1N1) viruses. Prior to vaccination 56% and 79% of the participants had been found to be seronegative to A/Victoria and A/New Jersey antigens respectively; the geometric mean antibody titres were low (1:5 to 1:11) except in persons aged 51 to 65 years, whose mean titre of antibody to the A/New Jersey antigen was 1:23, and persons aged 26 to 35 years, whose mean titre of antibody to the A/USSR antigen was 1:25. By 3 weeks after vaccination 85% of the seronegative persons had a fourfold or greater rise in titres of antibodies to the viruses in the vaccine, and 70% had a fourfold increase in titre of antibody to the A/Texas antigen. Of the persons aged 26 to 35 years (seronegative and seropositive) 68% had a fourfold or greater increase in titre of antibody to the A/USSR antigen. There was no change in the mean titres of 19 unvaccinated control subjects during the observation period. At 6 and 12 months after vaccination the titres of antibodies to the A/Victoria and A/New Jersey antigens had declined moderately in all age groups from those observed 3 weeks after vaccination. The rate of decline was similar for the various antibodies except that to the A/USSR antigen in persons 26 to 35 years of age, in whom the decline was much slower.  相似文献

Coastal bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) form a mosaic of resident and seasonal migratory populations along the United States Atlantic seaboard. Seasonal, poorly known migrants (identified as a separate stock) move as far north as New Jersey. During 2003–2005, 73 boat‐based photo‐identification surveys were conducted in southern New Jersey to discern seasonal occurrence, distribution, and patterns of movement and site fidelity. Neonates, young‐of‐year, and adults occurred in the study area from late May through late September, corresponding to water temperatures of 14.0–16.3°C. Of 205 individuals identified, 44% (n= 90) were sighted multiple times within or among years, including 10% (n= 20) of individuals identified in all 3 yr. Almost half (47%) of the multiple sightings were observed along a core area encompassed by the southern part of the Jacques Cousteau National Estuarine Research Reserve. In contrast to stocks studied in southern coastal areas of the U.S. Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico, estuaries were used significantly less than open‐beach habitat, which is consistent with the relative prey abundance in these habitats. Research at additional sites will help confirm whether bottlenose dolphins at the northern end of their migratory range exhibit local site fidelity and habitat preferences similar to those found in this study.  相似文献

The Burmese Python (Python molurus bivittatus) is now well established in southern Florida and spreading northward. The factors likely to limit this spread are unknown, but presumably include climate or are correlated with climate. We compiled monthly rainfall and temperature statistics from 149 stations located near the edge of the python’s native range in Asia (Pakistan east to China and south to Indonesia). The southern and eastern native range limits extend to saltwater, leaving unresolved the species’ climatic tolerances in those areas. The northern and western limits are associated with cold and aridity respectively. We plotted mean monthly rainfall against mean monthly temperature for the 149 native range weather stations to identify the climate conditions inhabited by pythons in their native range, and mapped areas of the coterminous United States with the same climate today and projected for the year 2100. We accounted for both dry-season aestivation and winter hibernation (under two scenarios of hibernation duration). The potential distribution was relatively insensitive to choice of scenario for hibernation duration. US areas climatically matched at present ranged up the coasts and across the south from Delaware to Oregon, and included most of California, Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and South and North Carolina. By the year 2100, projected areas of potential suitable climate extend northward beyond the current limit to include parts of the states of Washington, Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York. Thus a substantial portion of the mainland US is potentially vulnerable to this ostensibly tropical invader.  相似文献

The brown marmorated stink bug, Halyomorpha halys, a native of Asia, has become a serious invasive pest in the USA. H. halys was first detected in the USA in the mid 1990s, dispersing to over 41 other states. Since 1998, H. halys has spread throughout New Jersey, becoming an important pest of agriculture, and a major nuisance in urban developments. In this study, we used spatial analysis, geostatistics, and Bayesian linear regression to investigate the invasion dynamics and colonization processes of this pest in New Jersey. We present the results of monitoring H. halys from 51 to 71 black light traps that were placed on farms throughout New Jersey from 2004 to 2011 and examined relationships between total yearly densities of H. halys and square hectares of 48 landscape/land use variables derived from urban, wetland, forest, and agriculture metadata, as well as distances to nearest highways. From these analyses we propose the following hypotheses: (1) H. halys density is strongly associated with urban developments and railroads during its initial establishment and dispersal from 2004 to 2006; (2) H. halys overwintering in multiple habitats and feeding on a variety of plants may have reduced the Allee effect, thus facilitating movement into the southernmost regions of the state by railroads from 2005 to 2008; (3) density of H. halys contracted in 2009 possibly from invading wetlands or sampling artifact; (4) subsequent invasion of H. halys from the northwest to the south in 2010 may conform to a stratified-dispersal model marked by rapid long-distance movement, from railroads and wetland rights-of-way; and (5) high densities of H. halys may be associated with agriculture in southern New Jersey in 2011. These landscape features associated with the invasion of H. halys in New Jersey may predict its potential rate of invasion across the USA and worldwide.  相似文献
