Three extraction methods were compared for the recovery of bibionid larvae from grassland soil samples. Only wet-sieving followed by flotation in a saturated salt solution yielded bibionids. No larvae were recovered either with modified Tullgren funnels or by slow immersion of soil cores into a saturated salt solution. The efficiency with which larval bibionid populations can be estimated is poor. Generally, smaller cores yielded more larvae per volume of soil. Most bibionids were found in the top 4 cm of soil. It is concluded that 10 cm diameter and 6–8 cm deep soil cores are an acceptable compromise between efficiency and sampling effort but sample size will largely be determined by the resources available for processing of samples.  相似文献

The spatial distribution of Culicoides impunctatus Goetghebuer (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) larvae was sampled at a site in western Scotland, and geostatistical analyses were used to quantify spatial dependencies. Nested sampling and analysis indicated that most of the spatial variance occurred within distances of 160-640 cm, levelling off at distances >640 cm. Semivariograms for transformed data from three 100 m x 100 m grids showed similar, isotropic patterns for larval counts, soil organic content, soil water content and the distribution of Juncus spp. rushes, with the variance increasing with separation distance. High levels of significance were associated with power models used to describe the semivariograms, which was indicative of the absence of a plateau (or 'sill') in the respective data. Correlation analysis of transformed data revealed significantly positive relationships between larval counts and soil pH, soil percentage organic content, soil percentage water content and also the distribution of Sphagnum spp., Juncus spp. and Myrica gale. There were also significantly negative relationships between larval counts and the distribution of Pteridium aquilinum and all mosses other than Sphagnum spp. The results suggest a far more structured and predictable pattern of C. impunctatus larval sites than previous studies and are discussed in relation to their application in localized Culicoides control and to studies of the mechanisms determining the spatial distribution of C. impunctatus larvae.  相似文献

Abstract. Soil cores were taken from three transects, representing the vegetation typical of much of the west coast and Highlands of Scotland, in an attempt to investigate the distribution of Culicoides impunctatus larvae. Sampling of soil cores was carried out at four periods throughout the day (00.00,05.00,12.00 and 17.00 hours). Each core sample was sliced into sections, 1 cm deep and Culicoides impunctatus larval numbers in the first 8 cm of the soil core were investigated, using a sugar-flotation technique. At all sampling times, approximately 50% of the total numbers of larvae recovered were from the first 2cm of the soil. During the daylight sampling periods (05.00, 12.00 and 17.00 hours), there was a small but significant migration of larvae into the deeper layers (2–5 cm). The results are discussed in relation to those for other species from previous studies, and also to their application in larval collection for colonization techniques and in localized Culicoides control.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. The responses of third instar Psila rosae (F.) larvae to light, temperature, humidity and soil moisture were investigated in the laboratory.
2. Larvae were photonegative and preferred a temperature of about 15°C. Temperatures between 30 and 40°C adversely affected movement and over 40° C were lethal.
3. In choice chambers, larvae preferred humidities of 70–100% r.h. and larvae in sand avoided dry conditions (2.5% field capacity). The latter response became more marked as larvae approached the pre-pupal stage when moistures of 40% field capacity and lower were avoided.
4. Most larvae were found at a depth of 8 cm in sand of uniform moisture content and temperature, but variation in moisture content could alter this preference.
5. In August, most larval damage in the field occurred near the tip of the carrot tap root but was more evenly distributed over the roots in November. It is uncertain whether this was due to soil near the surface being drier in August or whether it was caused by behavioural differences between the two generations of carrot fly larvae.
6. During the summer of 1975, low soil moisture levels resulted in the total absence of larval mines on the carrot roots even though pupae were found at depths of 20–30 cm in the soil. Temperature had no effect on the distribution of mines on carrot roots except at the top 2 cm of the soil profile.  相似文献

本文采用聚集指标法分析了刺槐叶瘿蚊Obolodiplosis robiniae(Haldemann)越冬幼虫的空间分布格局,结果表明:刺槐叶瘿蚊越冬幼虫在林间呈聚集分布;其聚集的原因与刺槐叶瘿蚊自身的行为习性有关或由刺槐叶瘿蚊本身与环境的异质性共同作用所造成。采用"z"字型、平行线、棋盘式、大五点、对角线5种抽样方法估计林间刺槐叶瘿蚊越冬幼虫虫口密度,确定对角线法调查15样方为最佳抽样方法。对土壤不同深度土层中越冬幼虫数量调查,明确最适取样深度为3cm。同时利用Iwao回归建立了理论抽样数量模型:n=t2/D2(1.1957/x珋+0.8905)。利用过筛手检和过筛水漂2种方法检数土中幼虫,对检出刺槐叶瘿蚊越冬幼虫虫量及检虫时间进行了对比分析,结果表明过筛水漂法检虫较为可取。  相似文献

A study of the vertical distribution of all instars of chironomid larvae was carried out in the littoral zone of a lake in southwest England over a period of 14 months. Samples were collected every month by using a 44 mm (i.d.) piston core sampler. Each core sample was sectioned at 1 cm intervals and preserved immediately after collection. The density of larvae in the study area varied from a low of 16,368 larvae m–2 in August 1989 to maximum values of 106,249 and 129,954 larvae m–2 in June 1989 and May 1990, respectively. During spring and early summer, first instar larvae comprised approximately half of the larval population. No significant differences were found in seasonal vertical distribution of the chironomid larvae. Over 85% of the larval population inhabited the top 6 cm of the sediment, with the first and second instar larvae of all taxa most abundant in the top 1 cm section.  相似文献

1. Larvae of Simulium noelleri formed dense aggregations (>60 larvae cm?2) at a lake outlet where water passed in a very thin film vertically over wooden planks. Despite the high densities there was sufficient space between larvae to allow water to flow within an aggregation as well as over its surface. 2. Small larvae, occluded within an aggregation, had a faster midgut throughput rate than larger larvae. Both had rates that were similar to those recorded in the literature for a range of habitats and species. The same relationship of throughput rate and larval size was maintained from upstream to downstream across 20cm of an aggregation. 3. Material passed through the midgut of larvae of a given size at a constant rate, indicating that assimilation efficiency of the whole gut contents was low. 4. By colour-banding larval gut contents with fluorescent dye it was possible to demonstrate that faecal pellets are a component of the larval diet in the dense aggregations, especially of small larvae. 5. The abundance of four easily identifiable components of the lake seston were measured from water samples above, and below, a larval aggregation. Particles with a mean diameter of 40 μm, or greater, showed significant reductions in numbers over a stream length of 6cm. Abundance and head capsule width were measured for northern (Diabrotica barberi Smith & Lawrence) and western corn rootworm (D. virgifera virgifera LeConte) larvae recovered primarily from maize root systems but also from large soil cores each centered around a root system. Larvae for measurement derived from field populations under infestation and rotation regimes that allowed most specimens to be assigned to species. A frequency distribution of head capsule widths indicated three separate peaks for western corn rootworm, presumably representing frequency of the three larval instars, with no larvae measuring 280 or 420 microm in the valleys between peaks. Multiple normal curves fit to similar but partially overlapping peaks generated by northern corn rootworm suggested that division of first to second and second to third instar can best be made for this species at 267 and 406 microm, respectively (270 and 410 when measurements are made to the nearest 20 microm). These results implied that instar of individuals from mixed northern and western corn rootworm populations can be accurately judged from head capsule width without having to determine species. The relative abundance of western corn rootworm instars was similar in root systems removed from the center of 19-cm diameter x 19-cm deep soil cores and in soil cores from which the root systems were removed. Furthermore, the number of larvae from root systems correlated significantly with that from the surrounding soil. These results indicated that the former and much more convenient sampling unit can be used to estimate population developmental stage and possibly density, at least early in the season when these tests were done and young larvae predominated.  相似文献

The Australian snout beetle, Oxyops vitiosa, was introduced to south Florida, USA, as a biological control agent of the invasive tree Melaleuca quinquenervia during the spring of 1997. As part of ongoing post-release evaluations of this weevil, we sought to quantify the population density that can be maintained by O. vitiosa larvae when fully exploiting the available melaleuca foliage. Seasonal population densities were modeled as a function of tree size distribution and density, plant phenology, quantity of acceptable foliage (suitable for larval development) and larval consumption values. Larval densities varied dramatically due to fluctuating resource availability and ranged from 830 946 larvae/ha in July–August to >4.5 million larvae/ha in January–February. The expected population density for a generalized (mixed sized) tree distribution was estimated to be 13.9 million larvae/ha. Larval densities increased to 18.8 million larvae/ha per year when large trees (>20 cm diameter at breast height) represented the dominant size class, whereas habitats dominated by medium (10–19 cm) and small (1.3–9 cm) trees were predicted to have larval densities of 11.3 and 6.3 million/year, respectively. Validation data obtained from smaller, more accessible plants suggested that the model overestimated realized yearly larval densities by 9% or 15 416 larvae/ha per year.  相似文献

The effect of livestock grazing on grassland degradation and the resulting impact on soil carbon concentration is an important factor in carbon estimation. We addressed this issue using field observations and laboratory analysis of samples from Tibetan grassland. Based on the field measurements, we investigated the soil organic carbon (SOC) and soil inorganic carbon (SIC) under two contrasting degradation states: lightly or non-degraded grasslands (LDG) and heavily degraded grasslands (HDG). We assessed their relationships with environmental factors using data collected from 99 sites across Northern Tibet during 2011–2012. Data were analyzed using a linear mixed-effects model and one-way ANOVA. The results showed that: (1) SOC concentration decreased and SIC concentration increased following grassland degradation, especially at soil depths in the range of 0–10 cm (P < 0.05); (2) the major environmental factors affecting SOC and SIC were soil pH and plant biomass; (3) spatially, the SOC density increased with the mean annual temperature and mean annual precipitation, whereas SIC exhibited the opposite trend; (4) the SOC density increased at first and then decreased with increasing grazing intensity, with an opposite trend in SIC; and (5) soil carbon storage in this region was 0.14 Pg smaller in the HDG than in the LDG. This study suggests that grassland degradation can significantly affect the vertical distribution and storage of SOC and SIC. The carbon sequestration capacity of the top 100 cm of soil in Northern Tibet was estimated as 0.14 Pg.  相似文献

Competition between granulosis virus (GV) and the larval parasite,Sturmiopsis inferens Tns. (Tachinidae: Diptera), was studied in 3rd — and 4th — instar larvae of the sugarcane shoot borer,Chilo infuscatellus Snellen (Crambidae: Lepidoptera), under laboratory conditions. Mortality due to GV infection and parasitization was 76.8 and 47.6 per cent, respectively, when they were tested separately. But when hosts were infected simultaneously with microfeeding of GV and larval parasite, a significantly low parasitism (5.5%) was obtained compared to 74.8 per cent mortality by GV infection. When the larvae were microfed with the GV 6 days after inoculation with parasitic maggots, mortality due to the virus was reduced significantly to 20.5 per cent, but when the maggot inoculation was preceded by virus microfeeding 6 days before, parasitization was unsuccessful, while 75% of larvae died of virus. Results obtained from field — collected larvae also showed that significantly more parasite puparia were recovered from healthy larvae than from virus — infected larvae. Similar differences in parasitization were not obtained in the case of healthy or virus — infected pupae.   相似文献

To determine the depth of soil at which mated females of the white grub beetle Dasylepida ishigakiensis Niijima et Kinoshita oviposited and their larval offspring stayed in the soil in different seasons, 847 mated female and male adults were released into a caged sugarcane field on Miyako Island. We then excavated this field systematically to collect adults and their larval offspring in the soil once or twice per month from 24 April 2002 to 31 March 2003. Dead females were found between 10 and 50 cm deep in the soil (N = 91), but most frequently in the layer 30–40 cm deep (N = 42; 46.2%). They were recovered more frequently in the soil at the plant foot (N = 73; 80.2%) than in the furrows (N = 18; 19.8%). On the other hand, no male carcass was discovered either in the soil or on the ground surface. The number of larvae discovered in the soil per row was large on 30 April (N = 52.5) and on 5 June (N = 58.3), when they were at the first instar. It decreased rapidly thereafter until 21 August (N = 9.5), when they molted to the second instar, and remained at similar levels through to the following 31 March (N = 8.0), during which they were mostly at the third instar. The larvae were found at various soil depths ranging from 0 to 70 cm, but the majority were found between 10 and 30 cm deep. The last sampling on 31 March indicated that mature larvae moved to a deeper layer for estivation. These results suggested that physical control through rotary tillage before they move to the deeper layer may be effective.  相似文献

Trace element concentrations of otoliths from larval herring Clupea harengus collected from known spawning beds in the Celtic and Irish Seas, were investigated using laser ablation ICP-MS and compared with concentrations in the larval cores of juvenile otoliths from the same populations and year class. A range of elements (Mg, Zn, Sr, Ba and Pb) was detectable in early larval otoliths (20–40 µm diameter). Larval otolith concentrations exceeded the larval core concentrations of juvenile otoliths and also the concentrations reported in the literature, for Mg, Zn, Ba and Pb, indicating that the measurement of elements in larval otoliths was severely affected by post-mortem contamination, most likely due to adherence of tissue and endolymph residue on the otolith surface. Comparison of otolith composition between larvae from two freezing treatments showed that contamination from Mg and Zn was more serious in otoliths that had remained in frozen larvae for prolonged periods. Larval populations from the two seas showed significant differences in otolith Sr concentrations, which were consistent over two sampling years. Similar differences were seen in the corresponding juvenile populations. The results show that while early larval otoliths are extremely susceptible post-mortem contamination, Sr concentrations can be reliably measured using laser ablation ICP-MS and for this element, the detection of region specific differences is possible.  相似文献

Dispersal and survival of Lobesia botrana Den. & Schiff. (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) larvae in a simulated first generation and the relationship with their density on vine inflorescences were studied under field conditions. Artificial infestations with neonate larvae were conducted at densities of 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 individuals per vine inflorescence. Larvae had a considerable dispersal capacity on the vine espalier and were able to reach several inflorescences around those artificially infested. Dispersal downwards (63.1%) was significantly more frequent than upwards (36.9%), probably because larvae move down the vine plant using silk threads. However, the fact that there was upwards dispersal provides evidence that larvae are capable of active locomotion upwards on the vine plant structure. Mean distances covered by larvae ranged between 10 and 30 cm, with a maximum as far as 45 cm. The longest displacements were not associated with the downward dispersal. The maximum distance covered by larvae was positively correlated with larval density. Mean distance and larval density were not correlated, but mean distances covered at high larval densities were significantly higher than at low densities. At higher larval densities, the proportion of larvae which established in the artificially infested inflorescences decreased whereas the proportion of dispersing individuals increased. However, as a result of the balance between establishment and dispersal, larval survival did not differ significantly among larval densities (26–44%). The results obtained suggest that larval dispersal must be taken into account when preimaginal stages are sampled to determine whether damage thresholds are reached in an integrated pest management program.  相似文献

The present study was conducted to evaluate the relative roles that water column stratification intensity and possible inter-population behaviour differences play in determining depth of larval settlement of giant scallops, Placopecten magellanicus, in relation to thermoclines. Differences in timing of settlement of larvae from various populations were also examined. Two separate experiments were conducted in a 10.5-m-deep, 3.7-m-diameter, thermally stratified tank with larvae spawned from scallops collected from several adult beds located in areas with differing oceanographic regimes (Georges Bank, Mahone Bay, Passamaquoddy Bay). Previous mesocosm experiments had shown that veligers from these various populations differ in their vertical migration patterns. In the first experiment (December 1992-February 1993), larvae from all three populations were held in separate 9.5-m-deep tubes and exposed to a 1.5 °C temperature differential established over a depth interval of 1 m. The number of settled juveniles (spat) of each population collected at the end of the experiment increased with depth and showed no peak at or above the thermocline. This depth distribution of spat was most likely driven by preferential larval settlement. In the second experiment (February-May 1994), larvae spawned from Georges Bank and Passamaquoddy Bay stocks were held in 9.0-m-deep tubes and exposed to a 5 °C temperature differential established over a depth interval of 1 m. The number of settled spat of both populations was greater above this thermal boundary and increased with decreasing depth. This depth distribution was most likely driven by preferential settlement above the thermocline followed by upward post-settlement migration. The results from the two experiments indicate that larvae from various populations show similar trends in settlement patterns in response to similar thermal stratifications. Stratification intensity, however, does affect depth of larval settlement. In the second experiment, both populations of larvae settled throughout the time interval of collector deployment (larvae 32-82 days old). These results extend the range of planktonic developmental times generally reported in the literature and may be more indicative of natural planktonic development in the field. While Georges Bank larvae settled in consistent numbers through time, Passamaquoddy Bay larvae showed peaks in settlement at certain time periods, indicating that pulses of larval settlement may occur even from an individual spawning event.  相似文献

This study compares the efficiency of pot trials in the glasshouse or outdoors, and trials on undisturbed soil cores (100 cm deep; 15 cm wide), at simulating field trials. Yields of spring barley (Hordeum vulgare, cv Julia) were measured at sites on seven soil series on 11 farms, and also on undisturbed soil cores from the same sites, and in pot trials using disturbed soil from the same sites, to ascertain how far data from the core and pot trials (simulation procedures) could be used to generate the models, regressions or generalisations that were produced by more laborious and time-consuming field trials. There was no evidence of interactions between the soil series and simulation procedures. Correlations between field yields and yields from simulation procedures showed that the undisturbed cores gave the highest correlation (r=0.59**) with field yields. This was followed by yields measured in outdoor pot trials (r=0.36** and 0.67** in two years), and by pot trials in the glasshouse (r=0.11 and 0.25, neither significant). In regressions of field yield on yields from simulation trials, the intercept on the field yield axis was lowest for cores and highest for pot trials in the glasshouse. Anovar studies on the partitioning of the total variability in trial yields showed that undisturbed cores gave a partitioning of yields more similar to that of field trials than did the pot trials. In some respects, but not all, core trials also gave the most similar regressions of yield on soil properties to those obtained from field trials. The use of undisturbed cores, collected at sites of interest and carried to a central site, combines the advantages of field trials (natural soil structure and environment) with those of pot trials (standard environment, easier management).  相似文献

The cold-hardening capacity of field-collected larvae from southeast Missouri and laboratory-reared larvae of the southwestern corn borer, Diatraea grandiosella Dyar, was examined. Supercooling points of non-diapause and diapause larvae collected from maize plants grown in Missouri (36°30 N lat.) were ca.-7.0°C. The hemolymph melting points of diapause field larvae (-0.8°C) were significantly lower than those of non-diapause larvae collected in July (-0.5°C). The supercooling points of hemolymph from non-diapause and diapause field larvae ranged randomly from-10° to-18°C. Supercooling points of non-diapause laboratory larvae increased from-13° to-10°C prior to pupation, whereas those of diapause larvae increased similarly before the onset of diapause, but then decreased during diapause to ca.-17°C. No change in supercooling points or capacity to survive in the presence of ice was observed in diapause laboratory larvae acclimated at 4°C for 63 days. Laboratory and field larvae began to freeze at ca.-1.5°C in the presence of ice, but survived to several degrees below their melting points. The high supercooling points of field larvae appeared to be due to the presence of an environmental ice-nucleator. Although data for laboratory larvae indicate sufficiently low supercooling points to permit winter survival in southeastern Missouri, considerable larval mortality occurs in the field due to inoculative freezing and the presence of an ice-nucleator.  相似文献

The adsorption rate of a guanidine-resistant strain of poliovirus LSc 2ab was measured in Long Island soils with in situ field cores (10.1 by 75 cm). The test virus was chosen because it exhibited soil adsorption and elution characteristics of a number of non-polioviruses. After the inoculation of cores with seeded sewage effluent at a 1-cm/h infiltration rate, cores were extracted, fractionated, and analyzed for total plaque-forming units per each 5-cm fraction. The results showed that 77% of the viruses were adsorbed in the first 5 cm of soil. An additional 11% were found in the 5- to 10-cm fraction, and a total of 96% of the viruses were adsorbed by 25 cm. The remaining 4% were uniformly distributed over the next 50 cm of soil, with a minimum of 0.23% in each soil section. Few viruses (< 0.22%) were observed in core filtrates. Analysis of the viral distribution pattern in seeded cores, after an application of a single rinse of either sewage effluent or rainwater, indicated that large-scale viral mobilization was absent. However, localized areas of viral movement were noted in both of the rinsed cores, with the rainwater-rinsed cores exhibiting more expensive movement. All mobilized viruses were resorbed at lower core depths.  相似文献

Listronotus bonariensis (Kuschel) is a pest of agriculturally important graminaceous species, with mining larvae that kill the stems of the host plants. In this study, larval populations were measured in spring and summer in irrigated dairy grassland comprising Lolium perenne L. (cv. Nui) with and without the endophyte Epichloë festucae var. lolii Latch, M.J. Chr. and Samuels and Poa annua L.. Larvae were extracted from tillers taken from the swards of these two grass species and extracted from turves, and L. bonariensis population densities were estimated from tiller and turf larval counts on a m−2 basis. Over the study period, the total number of larvae and larval densities extracted from turves was on average 2× greater than indicated from tillers. In most seasons, larval densities from turves were significantly higher than those from the tillers, though there was no correlation between tiller and turf larval densities. Mean head capsule widths of larvae emerging from turf samples showed significant seasonal effects compared with tillers, while mean head capsule widths of all four instars were significantly greater when extracted from tillers compared with turves. There was a significant endophyte effect on head capsule widths of larvae collected in summer, but the effect was not consistent across instars or source. Conversely, no significant endophyte effect on head capsule width was found in spring populations from either tillers or turves. This study shows that in irrigated dairy pasture, a high proportion of L. bonariensis larvae can live externally of tillers, presumably among the organic matter around the base of grasses in irrigated dairy pasture, and that density estimates based only on tiller populations will have significantly underestimated actual numbers. Having a precise indication of larval population densities is essential when developing life tables or determining economic damage threshold levels.  相似文献
