Summary Watestriders (Gerris paludum F.), displaced by flowing water or wind, compensate for this by periodic jumps against the direction of drift so that they keep their average position — relative to the river bank, for instance — constant over long periods of time. To identify the cues used by the animals to compensate for drift, they were kept on an artificial stream with visual patterns along one or both sides. The velocity of the water flow and the pattern motion were varied. It is not possible to induce compensatory jumps in darkness by water or air current alone. Visual cues are indispensable for the reaction. The product of jump amplitude and jump frequency equals the drift velocity on average. The jump amplitudes are more or less independent of the flow velocity while the jump frequency is adjusted to it.  相似文献

We investigated the escape jumps that locusts produce in response to approaching objects. Hindleg muscular activity during an escape jump is similar to that during a defensive kick. Locusts can direct their escape jumps up to 50° either side of the direction of their long axis at the time of hindleg flexion, allowing them to consistently jump away from the side towards which an object is approaching. Variation in jump trajectory is achieved by rolling and yawing movements of the body that are controlled by the fore- and mesothoracic legs. During hindleg flexion, a locust flexes the foreleg ipsilateral to its eventual jump trajectory and then extends the contralateral foreleg. These foreleg movements continue throughout co-contraction of the hindleg tibial muscles, pivoting the locust’s long axis towards its eventual jump trajectory. However, there are no bilateral differences in the motor programs of the left and right hindlegs that correlate with jump trajectory. Foreleg movements enable a locust to control its jump trajectory independent of the hindleg motor program, allowing a decision on jump trajectory to be made after the hindlegs have been cocked in preparation for a jump.  相似文献

Optimal control simulations of the standing long jump were developed to gain insight into the mechanisms of enhanced performance due to arm motion. The activations that maximize standing long jump distance of a joint torque actuated model were determined for jumps with free and restricted arm movement. The simulated jump distance was 40 cm greater when arm movement was free (2.00 m) than when it was restricted (1.60 m). The majority of the performance improvement in the free arm jump was due to the 15% increase (3.30 vs. 2.86 m/s) in the take-off velocity of the center of gravity. Some of the performance improvement in the free arm jump was attributable to the ability of the jumper to swing the arms backwards during the flight phase to alleviate excessive forward rotation and position the body segments properly for landing. In restricted arm jumps, the excessive forward rotation was avoided by "holding back" during the propulsive phase and reducing the activation levels of the ankle, knee, and hip joint torque actuators. In addition, swinging the arm segments allowed the lower body joint torque actuators to perform 26 J more work in the free arm jump. However, the most significant contribution to developing greater take-off velocity came from the additional 80 J work done by the shoulder actuator in the jump with free arm movement.  相似文献

We present a directed essential dynamics (DED) method for peptide and protein folding. DED is a molecular dynamics method based on the essential dynamics sampling and the principal component analysis. The main idea of DED is to use principal component analysis to determine the direction of the most active collective motion of peptides at short intervals of time (20 fs) during the folding process and then add an additional force along it to adjust the folding direction. This method can make the peptides avoid being trapped in the local minima for a long time and enhance the sampling efficiency in conformational space during the simulation. An S-peptide with 15 amino acids is used to demonstrate the DED method. The results show that DED can lead the S-peptide to fold quickly into the native state, whereas traditional molecular dynamics needs more time to do this.  相似文献

The role of arm swing in jumping has been examined in numerous studies of standing jumps for height and forward distance, but no prior studies have explored its effect on lateral jumping. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect of arm motion on standing lateral jump performance and to examine the biomechanical mechanisms that may explain differences in jump distance. Six participants executed a series of jumps for maximum lateral distance from two in-ground force platforms for two jump cases (free and restricted arms) while an eight-camera, passive-reflector, motion capture system collected 3D position data throughout the movements. Inverse kinematics and dynamics analyses were performed for all jumps using three-dimensional (3D) link models to calculate segment angular velocities, joint moments, joint powers, and joint work. Free arm motion improved standing lateral jump performance by 29% on average. This improvement was due to increased takeoff velocity and improved lateral and vertical positions of the center of gravity (CG) at takeoff and touchdown. Improved velocity and position of the CG at takeoff resulted from a 33% increase in the work done by the body. This increase in work in free arm jumps compared to restricted arm jumps was found in both upper and lower body joints with the largest improvements (>30 J) occurring at the lower back, right hip, and right shoulder.  相似文献

Increasing evidence points to a dynamical compartmentalization of the cell nucleus, yet the mechanisms by which interphase chromatin moves and is positioned within nuclei remain unclear. Here, we study the dynamics of chromatin in vivo applying a novel particle-tracking method in a two-photon microscope that provides approximately 10-fold higher spatial and temporal resolutions than previous measurements. We followed the motion of a chromatin sequence containing a lac-operator repeat in cells stably expressing lac repressor fused with enhanced green fluorescent protein, observing long periods of apparent constrained diffusion interrupted by relatively abrupt jumps of approximately 150 nm lasting 0.3-2 s. During these jumps, the particle moved an average of four times faster than in the periods between jumps and in paths more rectilinear than predicted for random diffusion motion. Additionally, the jumps were sensitive to the temperature and absent after ATP depletion. These experimental results point to an energy-dependent mechanism driving fast motion of chromatin in interphase cells.  相似文献

Current models propose that the plasma membrane of animal cells is composed of heterogeneous and dynamic microdomains known variously as cytoskeletal corrals, lipid rafts and protein islands. Much of the experimental evidence for these membrane compartments is indirect. Recently, live cell single particle tracking studies using quantum dot-labeled IgE bound to its high affinity receptor Fc?RI, provided direct evidence for the confinement of receptors within micrometer-scale cytoskeletal corrals. In this study, we show that an innovative time-series analysis of single particle tracking data for the high affinity IgE receptor, Fc?RI, on mast cells provides substantial quantitative information about the submicrometer organization of the membrane. The analysis focuses on the probability distribution function of the lengths of the jumps in the positions of the quantum dots labeling individual IgE Fc?RI complexes between frames in movies of their motion. Our results demonstrate the presence, within the micrometer-scale cytoskeletal corrals, of smaller subdomains that provide an additional level of receptor confinement. There is no characteristic size for these subdomains; their size varies smoothly from a few tens of nanometers to a over a hundred nanometers. In QD-IGE labeled unstimulated cells, jumps of less than 70 nm predominate over longer jumps. Addition of multivalent antigen to crosslink the QD-IgE-Fc?RI complexes causes a rapid slowing of receptor motion followed by a long tail of mostly jumps less than 70 nm. The reduced receptor mobility likely reflects both the membrane heterogeneity revealed by the confined motion of the monomeric receptor complexes and the antigen-induced cross linking of these complexes into dimers and higher oligomers. In both cases, the probability distribution of the jump lengths is well fit, from 10 nm to over 100 nm, by a novel power law. The fit for short jumps suggests that the motion of the quantum dots can be modeled as diffusion in a fractal space of dimension less than two.  相似文献

Plyometric training in children, including different types of jumps, has become common practice during the last few years in different sports, although there is limited information about the adaptability of children with respect to different loads and the differences in performance between various jump types. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of gender and training background on the optimal drop jump height of 9- to 11-year-old children. Sixty prepubertal (untrained and track and field athletes, boys and girls, equally distributed in each group [n = 15]), performed the following in random order: 3 squat jumps, 3 countermovement jumps (CMJs) and 3 drop jumps from heights of 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 cm. The trial with the best performance in jump height of each test was used for further analysis. The jump type significantly affected the jump height. The jump height during the CMJ was the highest among all other jump types, resulting in advanced performance for both trained and untrained prepubertal boys and girls. However, increasing the dropping height did not change the jumping height or contact time during the drop jump. This possibly indicates an inability of prepubertal children to use their stored elastic energy to increase jumping height during drop jumps, irrespective of their gender or training status. This indicates that children, independent of gender and training status, have no performance gain during drop jumps from heights up to 50 cm, and therefore, it is recommended that only low drop jump heights be included in plyometric training to limit the probability of sustaining injuries.  相似文献

Two methods for the power analysis of standing jumps are proposed and compared in this article. The first method is based on a simple analytical formulation which requires as input the coordinates of the center of gravity in three specified instants of the jump. The second method is based on a multibody model that simulates the jumps processing the data obtained by a three-dimensional (3D) motion capture system and the dynamometric measurements obtained by the force platforms. The multibody model is developed with OpenSim, an open-source software which provides tools for the kinematic and dynamic analyses of 3D human body models. The study is focused on two of the typical tests used to evaluate the muscular activity of lower limbs, which are the counter movement jump and the standing long jump. The comparison between the results obtained by the two methods confirms that the proposed analytical formulation is correct and represents a simple tool suitable for a preliminary analysis of total mechanical work and the mean power exerted in standing jumps.  相似文献

The dependence of cytoplasmic membranes upon the nucleus was studied by examining enucleated amebae with the electron microscope at intervals up to 1 wk after enucleation. Amebae were cut into two approximately equal parts, and the fine structure of the enucleated portions was compared with that of the nucleated parts and starved whole cells which had been maintained under the same conditions. Golgi bodies were diminished in size 1 day after enucleation and were not detected in cells enucleated for more than 2 days. The endoplasmic reticulum of enucleated cells appeared to increase in amount and underwent changes in its morphology. The sparsely scattered short tubules of granular endoplasmic reticulum present in unmanipulated amebae from stock cultures were replaced in 1–3-day enucleates by long narrow cisternae. In 3–7-day enucleates, similar cisternae of granular endoplasmic reticulum encircled areas of cytoplasm partially or completely. It was estimated that in most cases hundreds of these areas encircled by two rough membranes were formed per enucleated cell. The number of ribosomes studding the surface of the endoplasmic reticulum decreased progressively with time after enucleation. In contrast, the membranes of nucleated parts and starved whole cells did not undergo these changes. The possible identification of membrane-encircled areas as cytolysomes and their mode of formation are considered. Implications of the observations regarding nuclear regulation of the form of the Golgi apparatus and the endoplasmic reticulum are discussed.  相似文献

Introduction

The accuracy of radiation delivery is increasingly important as radiotherapy technology continues to develop. The goal of this study was to evaluate intrafractional motion during intracranial radiosurgery and the relationship between motion change and treatment time.

Methods and Materials

A total of 50 treatment records with 5988 images, all acquired during treatments with the CyberKnife Radiosurgery System, were retrospectively analyzed in this study. We measured translation and rotation motion including superior-inferior (SI), right-left (RL), anterior-posterior (AP), roll, tilt and yaw. All of the data was obtained during the first 45 minutes of treatment. The records were divided into 3 groups based on 15-min time intervals following the beginning of treatment: group A (0-15 min), group B (16-30 min) and group C (31-45 min). The mean deviations, systematic errors, random errors and margin for planning target volume (PTV) were calculated for each group.

Results

The mean deviations were less than 0.1 mm in all three translation directions in the first 15 minutes. Greater motion occurred with longer treatment times, especially in the SI direction. For the 3D vector, a time-dependent change was observed, from 0.34 mm to 0.77 mm (p=0.01). There was no significant correlation between the treatment time and deviations in the AP, LR and rotation axes. Longer treatment times were associated with increases in systematic error, but not in random error. The estimated PTV margin for groups A, B and C were 0.86 / 1.14 / 1.31 mm, 0.75 / 1.12 / 1.20 mm, and 0.43 / 0.54 / 0.81 mm in the SI, RL, and AP directions, respectively.

Conclusions

During intracranial radiosurgery, a consistent increase in the positioning deviation over time was observed, especially in the SI direction. If treatment time is greater than 15 minutes, we recommend increasing the PTV margins to ensure treatment precision.  相似文献

The nature and dynamics of the motions of a diunsaturated fatty acyl chain in a lipid bilayer were examined using a comprehensive simulation program for 2H NMR line shapes developed by Wittebort et al. [Wittebort, R. J., Olejniczak, E. T., & Griffin, R. G. (1987) J. Chem. Phys. 36, 5411-5420]. A motional model in which the isolinoleoyl chain (18:2 delta 6,9) adopts two conformations consistent with the low energy structures proposed for 1,4-pentadiene [Applegate, K. R., & Glomset, J. A. (1986) J. Lipid Res. 27, 658-680], but undergoes a rapid jump between these states, is sufficient to account for the experimentally observed quadrupolar couplings, the 2H-2H and 1H-2H dipolar couplings, the longitudinal relaxation times, and the changes in the average conformation of the chain that occur with a variation in temperature. The jump motion originates via rotations about the C7-C8 and the C8-C9 carbon bonds and leads to the low order parameters assigned to the C8 methylene segment (0.18) and the C9-C10 double bond (0.11). In contrast, the C6-C7 double bond, which is not involved in the two-site jump, characterized by a relatively large order parameter (0.56). Fatty acyl chains containing three or more double bonds likely cannot undergo the same jump motion and consequently will be highly ordered structures. Correlation times for diffusion of the molecular long axis of the diunsaturated acyl chain about the bilayer normal (approximately 10(-10) s) and for the local jump motion (approximately 10(-10) s) were calculated.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Mechanical parameters play a crucial role in proper cellular functions. This article examines the process of the appearance and breaking of adhesion forces during contact between the confluent cerebral endothelial cell layer and a melanoma cell attached to a tipless cantilever. This adhesion is the initial phase of melanoma transmigration through the endothelial cell layer. Taking the force measurement, if the contact was prolonged for several seconds, a decrease in the load force was observed, which corresponds to stress relaxation of the cells. The dependence of adhesion force and stress relaxation on dwell time showed a saturation-like behavior. These stress relaxation curves could be fitted with the sum of two exponentials, suggesting that two independent processes take place simultaneously. The breakup of the adhesion during the retraction of the cantilever with the attached melanoma cell is not continuous but shows jumps. Between living endothelial and melanoma cells, a minimum jump size of about 20 pN could be determined. The minimum jump is independent of the dwell time and load force. It seems to be the elementary binding force between these two cell types. In case of fixed endothelial cells, the adhesion force was strongly decreased and the jumps disappeared, whereas the stress relaxation did not show considerable change upon fixation.  相似文献

The purposes of this study are (a) to examine the effects of contact time manipulation on jump parameters and (b) to examine the interaction between starting height changes and contact time changes on important jump parameters. Fifteen male athletes performed a series of drop jumps from heights of 20, 40, and 60 cm. The instructions given to the subjects were (a) "jump as high as you can" and (b) "jump high a little faster than your previous jump." Jumps were performed at each height until the athlete could not achieve a shorter ground contact time. The data were divided into 5 groups where group 1 was made up of the longest ground contact times of each athlete and groups 2-4 were composed of progressively shorter contact times, with group 5 having the shortest contact times. The jumps of group 3 produced the highest maximum and mean mechanical power (p <0.05) during the positive phase of the drop jumps regardless of starting jump height. The vertical takeoff velocities for the first 3 groups did not show significant (p < 0.05) differences. These results indicate that the manipulation of jump technique plays larger role than jump height in the manipulation of important jump parameters.  相似文献

Mesenchymal cell crawling is a critical process in normal development, in tissue function, and in many diseases. Quantitatively predictive numerical simulations of cell crawling thus have multiple scientific, medical, and technological applications. However, we still lack a low-computational-cost approach to simulate mesenchymal three-dimensional (3D) cell crawling. Here, we develop a computationally tractable 3D model (implemented as a simulation in the CompuCell3D simulation environment) of mesenchymal cells crawling on a two-dimensional substrate. The Fürth equation, the usual characterization of mean-squared displacement (MSD) curves for migrating cells, describes a motion in which, for increasing time intervals, cell movement transitions from a ballistic to a diffusive regime. Recent experiments have shown that for very short time intervals, cells exhibit an additional fast diffusive regime. Our simulations’ MSD curves reproduce the three experimentally observed temporal regimes, with fast diffusion for short time intervals, slow diffusion for long time intervals, and intermediate time -interval-ballistic motion. The resulting parameterization of the trajectories for both experiments and simulations allows the definition of time- and length scales that translate between computational and laboratory units. Rescaling by these scales allows direct quantitative comparisons among MSD curves and between velocity autocorrelation functions from experiments and simulations. Although our simulations replicate experimentally observed spontaneous symmetry breaking, short-timescale diffusive motion, and spontaneous cell-motion reorientation, their computational cost is low, allowing their use in multiscale virtual-tissue simulations. Comparisons between experimental and simulated cell motion support the hypothesis that short-time actomyosin dynamics affects longer-time cell motility. The success of the base cell-migration simulation model suggests its future application in more complex situations, including chemotaxis, migration through complex 3D matrices, and collective cell motion.  相似文献

For analysis of knee injuries in volleyball, we developed a system to obtain kinematic waveforms about the high-speed motion of volleyball spike jumps that could examine their individuality and reproducibility, with phase-matching and averaging. The form of six female players was recorded in two sessions of ten jumps each, with a video motion-analysis system, VICON, at the sampling frequency of 240 Hz. To identify individual jump characteristics despite differences from jump to jump, we averaged up to ten data sets with phases matched. For such matching, we defined and used a statistic, epsilon, as the arithmetic mean of all absolute differences in each of the angles at each time sampled, based on the least squares method. Statistical evaluation with adjusted coefficients of multiple determination and epsilon showed that intra-individual variation between the two sessions was significantly smaller than inter-individual variation; their means differed by more than 2 standard deviations (SD) and 3SD, respectively. Regression analysis showed that this system was reliable (p < 0.001). We concluded that the averaged data sets obtained by the system could embody the individuality of spike jumps, with satisfactory reproducibility.  相似文献

The purposes of this study are: a) to examine the possibility of influencing the leg stiffness through instructions given to the subjects and b) to determine the effect of the leg stiffness on the mechanical power and take-off velocity during the drop jumps. A total of 15 athletes performed a series of drop jumps from heights of 20, 40 and 60 cm. The instructions given to the subjects were a) "jump as high as you can" and b) "jump high a little faster than your previous jump". The jumps were performed at each height until the athlete could not achieve a shorter ground contact time. The ground reaction forces were measured using a "Kistler" force plate (1000 Hz). The athletes body positions were recorded using a high speed (250 Hz) video camera. EMG was used to measure muscle activity in five leg muscles. The data was divided into 5 groups where group 1 was made up of the longest ground contact times of each athlete and group 5 the shortest. The leg and ankle stiffness values were higher when the contact times were shorter. This means that by influencing contact time through verbal instructions it is possible to control leg stiffness. Maximum center of mass take-off velocity the can be achieved with different levels of leg stiffness. The mechanical power acting on the human body during the positive phase of the drop jumps had the highest values in group 3. This means that there is an optimum stiffness value for the lower extremities to maximize mechanical power.  相似文献

This review article is devoted to results on distance measurement in locusts (e.g., Wallace, 1959; Collett, 1978; Sobel, 1990) and mantids. Before locusts or mantids jump toward a stationary object, they perform characteristic pendulum movements with the head or body, called peering movements, in the direction of the object. The fact that the animals over- or underestimate the distance to the object when the object is moved with or against the peering movement, and so perform jumps that are too long or short, would seem to indicate that motion parallax is used in this distance measurement. The behavior of the peering parameters with different object distances also indicates that not only retinal image motion but also the animal’s own movement is used in calculating the distance.  相似文献
