Summary: The hourly transit rates and the number of forager types during the middle of the day are presented for successful colonies of V. vulgaris. Outgoing foragers are divided into earth carriers and non-earth outgoers. Incoming foragers are divided into pulp, flesh and fluid carriers, and empty incomers. Fluid carriers also are divided into full and partial fluid carriers. The transit rates of different colonies are expressed as a percentage of their highest transit rates so that data from different colonies can be considered together. The percentage values of each type of outgoing and incoming forager are calculated from the daily counts so that again, data from different colonies can be considered together. The total hourly number of foragers and forager types during the middle of the day is used to generate a model for a hypothetical larger and smaller colony, during the whole of the colony's existence. During a colony's existence, 27.5 % of the outgoers are earth carriers, and of the incomers, 12.2 % are pulp carriers, 12.0 % flesh carriers, 72.2 % fluid carriers, and 3.7 % empty incomers. The relative lack of earth carriers during the large-cell colony phase can be related to the use of the nocturnal resting space in which some of the large-cell combs are built. This space, at the bottom of the nest, was excavated and used by the workers during the small-cell colony phase. Empty incomers are considered to be new foragers and/or colony guards.  相似文献

We examined the importance of experimental removal of mature colonies on colony recruitment in the western harvester ant Pogonomyrmex occidentalis. To test the common assumption that established colonies suppress the establishment of new colonies we removed all colonies in ten 0.25 ha plots in 1996 and an additional five plots in 1997 and measured new colony recruitment in 1997, 1998, and 1999. Using a blocked, paired plot design we found that removal of colonies increased new colony recruitment in some areas of the site, but not others. Spatial variation in the importance of established colonies to recruitment was consistent across years; blocks in which density dependence was important in one year exhibited density dependent recruitment in following years. We estimated that in the blocks where recruitment was affected by established colonies, they accounted for less than 10% of the mortality of foundress queens. The increase in the number of new recruits (on average two additional new colonies) was considerably less than the number of colonies removed; average colony density in the removal plots was 14 colonies per 0.25 ha plot. The consistent lack of importance of established colonies to recruitment in one block and the relatively small response to colony removal in the other blocks suggests that the number of new colonies in a year may not be equivalent to the number of deaths of established colonies in that year. Space limitation is an important influence on recruitment in P. occidentalis, but the magnitude of the limitation varies spatially.  相似文献

Summary: Aggression assays are commonly used to study nestmate recognition in social insects. Methods range from detailed behavioral observations on small numbers of insects to counts of individuals fighting in group interactions. These assays vary in the equipment used and the intensity and duration of observations. We used the Argentine ant, Linepithema humile, to compare four aggression bioassays for consistency between replicates, similarity between assays, and ability to predict whole colony interactions. The assays included were 1 live – 1 dead ant interactions, live 1-1 battles, live 5-5 battles, and 1 ant introduced to a foreign colony. We tested six ant colonies in all pairwise combinations using four different assays and two to three scoring methods per assay. We also conducted a colony merging experiment to see which assays were capable of predicting this ecologically important event. We found that scoring methods within assays yielded very similar results, giving us no reason to favor observationally intense procedures, such as continuous scanning, over less observationally intense systems, such as snapshot surveys. Assays differed greatly in their consistency between replicates. No two replicates of the 1 live – 1 dead assay were significantly correlated. The live 5-5 and the colony introduction assays were the most consistent across replicates. The mean scores of the live 1-1, live 5-5 and colony introduction assays were all significantly correlated with each other; only the live 5-5 assay was significantly correlated with the 1 live – 1 dead assay. Assays that utilized the greatest number of live ants were the most likely to reveal high levels of aggression. The aggression scores of all but the 1 live – 1 dead assay were positively correlated with the number of ants that died during whole colony encounters and negatively associated with colony merging. We conclude that all live ant assays tested are useful tools for analyzing aggressive interactions between colonies, but that the pairing of a live and dead ant produced inconsistent results and generally lower levels of aggression. We found relatively low consistency between trials using the live 1-1 assay, but found that with sufficient replication its results were highly correlated with the assays using more interacting ants. We suggest that isolated aggressive acts in assays do not necessarily predict whole colony interactions: some colonies that fought in bioassays merged when the entire colonies were allowed to interact.  相似文献

Colony counting error due to indistinguishable colony overlap (i.e., masking) was evaluated theoretically and experimentally. A theoretical model to predict colony masking was used to determine colony counting efficiency by Monte Carlo computer simulation of microorganism collection and development into CFU. The computer simulation was verified experimentally by collecting aerosolized Bacillus subtilis spores and examining micro- and macroscopic colonies. Colony counting efficiency decreased (i) with increasing density of collected culturable microorganisms, (ii) with increasing colony size, and (iii) with decreasing ability of an observation system to distinguish adjacent colonies as separate units. Counting efficiency for 2-mm colonies, at optimal resolution, decreased from 98 to 85% when colony density increased from 1 to 10 microorganisms cm-2, in contrast to an efficiency decrease from 90 to 45% for 5-mm colonies. No statistically significant difference (alpha = 0.05) between experimental and theoretical results was found when colony shape was used to estimate the number of individual colonies in a CFU. Experimental colony counts were 1.2 times simulation estimates when colony shape was not considered, because of nonuniformity of actual colony size and the better discrimination ability of the human eye relative to the model. Colony surface densities associated with high counting accuracy were compared with recommended upper plate count limits and found to depend on colony size and an observation system's ability to identify overlapped colonies. Alate swarms are one of the major visible signs of the expansion of the Formosan subterranean termite, Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae), in an area. Successful establishment of an incipient colony is thought to mainly rely on available food resources and moisture. The large-scale use of tree-based mulches in landscapes may inadvertently contribute to local establishment and growth of C. formosanus colonies. This research investigated the nutritional ecology of incipient colonies of C. formosanus feeding on seven tree-based, weathered, and nonweathered landscape mulches: pine straw, pine bark, cedar wood, water oak, eucalyptus, cypress, and melaleuca. Incipient colonies of C. formosanus feeding on pine straw, either weathered or nonweathered, produced significantly more progeny over the course of 1-yr feeding than colonies feeding on the other mulches tested. Regardless of weathered or not, the incipient colonies feeding on pine straw, eucalyptus, bald cypress, and water oak mulches had significantly greater survival rates after 360 d (53-77%) than colonies feeding on the other mulches tested (0-13%), but colonies feeding on nonweathered water oak had significantly lower survival (8%) than those kept on weathered water oak (58%). Colony fitness values were significantly different between the weathering treatment groups and among the different types of mulches. With regard to colony growth characteristics, three distinct growth patterns were identified: a high number of progeny (>100) with high colony survival rate (>50%), a medium number of progeny (12-50) with high colony survival rate (>50%), and a small number of progeny (0-10) with low colony survival rate (<5%). These findings suggest that different types of mulch substrates could significantly impact the nutritional ecology of the founding pairs and the successful establishment of incipient colonies during the swarming season.  相似文献

The methods used to determine family composition and colony size in Eurasian beaverCastor fiber Linnaeus, 1758 are often poorly described in published reports. Here we show how repeated counts of colony size in a random sample of colonies (n = 19) varied between dusk and dawn, between the months of August and September, and following successive counts. Mean counts at dusk and the following dawn did not vary significantly, though mean colony size was significantly greater in August than September. However, because all colony members are rarely seen during a single dusk or dawn count, successive counts often provided new information about the maximum number in each age class. This allowed us to adjust colony size following each count using the largest values thus far obtained, with the result that the mean adjusted colony size increased during six successive counts over seven weeks from 2.4 to 3.8. Family composition based on information from all six counts was 54% adults, 26% yearlings and 19% kits. Evidence suggests that kits in particular are undercounted by this method. Figures for colony size and composition in beaver should be viewed with caution if not obtained by methods tested for both precision and accuracy.  相似文献

Five Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains were tested for the utilization of 47 low-molecular-weight compounds as their sole sources of carbon and energy for growth at a concentration of 2.5 g/liter. Of these compounds, 31 to 35 were consumed. Growth experiments in tap water at 15 degrees C were carried out with one particular strain (P1525) isolated from drinking water. This strain was tested for the utilization of 30 compounds supplied at a concentration of 25 microgram of C per liter. The growth rate (number of generations per hour) of strain P1525 in this tap water was approximately 0.005 h-1, and with 10 compounds it was larger than 0.03 h-1. An average yield of 6.2 x 10(9) colony-forming units per mg of C was obtained from the maximum colony counts (colony-forming units per milliliter). The average yield and maximum colony count of strain P1525 grown in tap water supplied with a mixture of 45 compounds, each at a concentration of 1 microgram of C per liter, enabled us to calculate that 28 compounds were utilized. Growth rates of two P. aeruginosa strains (including P1525) in various types of water at 15 degrees C were half of those of a fluorescent pseudomonad. The concentrations of assimilable organic carbon calculated from maximum colony counts and average yield values amounted to 0.1 to 0.7% of the total organic carbon concentrations in five types of tap water. The assimilable organic carbon percentages were about 10 times larger in river water and in water after ozonation.  相似文献

Abstract: Aerial surveys are often used to quantify sizes of waterbird colonies; however, these surveys would benefit from a better understanding of associated biases. We compared estimates of breeding pairs of waterbirds, in colonies across southern Louisiana, USA, made from the ground, fixed-wing aircraft, and a helicopter. We used a marked-subsample method for ground-counting colonies to obtain estimates of error and visibility bias. We made comparisons over 2 sampling periods: 1) surveys conducted on the same colonies using all 3 methods during 3–11 May 2005 and 2) an expanded fixed-wing and ground-survey comparison conducted over 4 periods (May and Jun, 2004–2005). Estimates from fixed-wing aircraft were approximately 65% higher than those from ground counts for overall estimated number of breeding pairs and for both dark and white-plumaged species. The coefficient of determination between estimates based on ground and fixed-wing aircraft was ≤0.40 for most species, and based on the assumption that estimates from the ground were closer to the true count, fixed-wing aerial surveys appeared to overestimate numbers of nesting birds of some species; this bias often increased with the size of the colony. Unlike estimates from fixed-wing aircraft, numbers of nesting pairs made from ground and helicopter surveys were very similar for all species we observed. Ground counts by one observer resulted in underestimated number of breeding pairs by 20% on average. The marked-subsample method provided an estimate of the number of missed nests as well as an estimate of precision. These estimates represent a major advantage of marked-subsample ground counts over aerial methods; however, ground counts are difficult in large or remote colonies. Helicopter surveys and ground counts provide less biased, more precise estimates of breeding pairs than do surveys made from fixed-wing aircraft. We recommend managers employ ground counts using double observers for surveying waterbird colonies when feasible. Fixed-wing aerial surveys may be suitable to determine colony activity and composition of common waterbird species. The most appropriate combination of survey approaches will be based on the need for precise and unbiased estimates, balanced with financial and logistical constraints. Pressure from subterranean termites is known to vary geographically across the United States, but there are few quantitative studies concerning the threat of structural infestation for any geographic region. We assessed the number and locations of termite colonies present on 20 infested residential properties in central North Carolina, where subterranean termite pressure is considered to be heavy. This was achieved by using microsatellite markers to determine colony identity of termites collected over 6-14 mo from mud tubes in structures, below-ground monitors, and wood debris in the yard. In total, we identified 188 distinct colonies and determined their breeding structures. Reticulitermes flavipes (Kollar) was by far the most common species, accounting for nearly 90% of all colonies; the remaining colonies belonged to Reticulitermes hageni Banks and Reticulitermes virginicus (Banks). In four cases, there were two colonies infesting a structure simultaneously; in all other cases only a single colony was detected in the structure. Colony densities were high, averaging 62 colonies per ha (25 per acre) with a maximum of 185 colonies per ha (75 colonies per acre). Foraging ranges of R. flavipes and R. hageni colonies were generally small (<30 linear m), and most colonies were headed by a single pair of monogamous reproductives with nearly all the remaining colonies headed by relatively few inbreeding descendants of the original monogamous pair. These results provide the most detailed picture to date of the number, distribution, and colony characteristics of subterranean termite colonies located in and around residential structures.  相似文献

Bacterial colonies are spatially complex structures whose physiology is profoundly dependent on interactions between cells and with the underlying semi-solid substratum. Here, we use bacterial colonies as a model of a microbial community to evaluate the potential of laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) to delineate elemental distributions within colonies with minimal pre-treatment. To reduce water content of the colony and limit undesirable absorption of laser energy, we compared methods of preparing 24 h-old colonies of Escherichia coli TG1 on agar for laser ablation. Colonies on excised agar segments dried on chromatography paper were superior to colonies dried in a dessicator or by prolonged incubation, with respect to signal magnitude, signal:noise ratio and background signal. Having optimised laser scan speed (10 μm s 1) and laser beam diameter (100 μm), further improvements were achieved by growing colonies on nylon membranes over agar, which were then transferred to the ablation chamber without further treatment. Repeated line rasters across individual membrane-supported colonies yielded three-dimensional elemental maps of colonies, revealing a convex morphology consistent with visual inspection. By normalising isotope counts for P, Mn, Zn, Fe and Ca against Mg, the most abundant cellular divalent cation, we sought elemental heterogeneity within the colony. The normalised concentration of Mn in the perimeter was higher than in the colony interior, whereas the converse was true for Ca. LA-ICP-MS is a novel and powerful method for probing elemental composition and organisation within microbial communities and should find numerous applications in, for example, biofilm studies.  相似文献

Plants adopt various strategies in response to increasing density. We tested that response in two populations of Lemna minor L. – a free floating aquatic plant that frequently experiences intraspecific competition for space. Surface area of fronds and colonies, colony size (the number of fronds per colony), the rate of reproduction (based on the number of produced fronds) and growth rate (enlargement of surface area of all colonies) were the analysed factors presumably affected by density. The study was performed in natural stands and in experimental conditions with the use of two contrasting plant densities. Plants growing in natural conditions produced fronds of smaller and less variable surface area as a response to overcrowding but the number of fronds per colony was unrelated to plant density. Stable experimental conditions facilitated formation of fronds and colonies larger than in the field but frond detachment decreasing colony size was more intensive at high than at low density. This strategy allowed plants to more efficiently occupy limited available space. No self-thinning was observed during experimental cultures. Due to increasing frond area in cultures, growth rate was always higher than the rate of plant reproduction. Both were strongly negatively affected by high density. Performed calculations indicate that density-dependent growth inhibition starts when L. minor colonies cover the available water surface with a mono-layer mat. Some types of responses were found to significantly differ between analysed populations, which was also shown by genetic differences tested with he ISSR-PCR technique. Possible causal relationship between plant strategies and their genomic structure needs, however, further studies.  相似文献

Observations on the formation of clones containing araB-lacZ cistron fusions   总被引:12,自引:0,他引:12  
Summary Casadaban (1976) developed a technique for isolating E. coli clones containing fusions of the amino terminal-encoding portion of any cistron with the carboxy terminal-encoding portion of lacZ. The technique utilizes prophage Mu homology to bring the two cistrons into proximity. I have followed the appearance over time of colonies containing araB-lacZ fusions from a strain where the begining of the araB cistron is connected to lacZ by an intact Mucts62 prophage. Cultures of the starting strain grown on a variety of media have fewer than 2 in 1010 cells capable of forming colonies within three days after plating on selective arabinose-lactose medium. At 32°C, there is a delay of between 4 and 19 days before the first colony appears. The kinetics of colony appearance over the next two to four weeks then shows a rapid increase in the number of new colonies emerging per day followed by a decline. The pattern of colonial emergence and the final numbers of fusion colonies obtained are not grossly affected by reducing the number of cells plated over five orders of magnitude. Fusion colonies sometimes show a clustered pattern when they first emerge. Innoculation of pre-existing fusion clones at specific locations on the arabinose-lacteredselection plates seeded with the starting strain leads to the formation of inhibitory zones where no fusion colonies appear. Selection plates contain many microcolonies and papillae which do not proliferate into scoreable colonies but nonetheless contain cells capable of growth when replated on the same selective medium. Up to 39% of all plated cells are capable of producing fusion clones. The kinetics of fusion colony appearance can be altered by environmental and genetic manipulations. Partial derepression of the Mucts prophage at 37° accelerates the appearance of colonies but also reduces the final yield. Addition of limiting concentrations of glucose to the selective medium also accelerates the appearance of colonies in a specific fashion: enrichments below the level required for maximum acceleration produce a biphasic kinetics with two waves of fusion clone emergence separated by an eight-day interval. Infection with Muc + pAp phage produces dilysogens that have almost completely lost the ability to produce fusions. Infection with MuctsAampAP phage produces strains that are reduced in phage production and have delayed kinetics of fusion clone emergence. The implications of these observations for theories of hereditary change in bacteria are discussed.  相似文献

The population size of emperor penguins at the land-based Taylor Glacier colony was monitored over 54 years from 1957 to 2010 by intermittent ground counts from 1957 to 1975 and annual photographic counts from 1988 to 2010 of males attending the colony in winter and chicks in early summer. The breeding population in the early years averaged 3,684 ± 492 pairs compared with 2,927 ± 320 pairs from 1988–2010, a reduction of 20.5 %. The exact timing and magnitude of the change is unknown because there was a 13-year gap between the end of the historical counts and start of the contemporary counts. From 1954 to 2010 no real or inferred warming event that may have been linked to the decrease was evident at Australia’s Mawson station, 95 km from Taylor Glacier colony. From 1988 to 2010, variation in breeding population size and breeding success were not related to variation in the distance between the colony and open water. In this period, the number of pairs breeding fluctuated annually and overall showed signs of a gradual decrease. The Taylor Glacier colony is one of only three emperor penguin colonies where populations have been monitored in winter over the long term. Given the threat of climate warming to the future of this ice-dependent species it is imperative that the annual monitoring programme at Taylor Glacier continues well into the future.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. The ecological hypothesis predicts that multiple foundress colonies of social wasps may have a better survival rate and produce more brood per capita than single foundress colonies. With the aim of verifying if these characteristics exist in the primitively eusocial wasp species Belonogaster juncea juncea (L.), we monitored 49 foundations, including 13 single and 36 multiple foundress colonies, in Cameroon.
2. Multiple foundress colonies were significantly more successful than single foundress colonies in producing at least one adult.
3. The total productivity of the colonies increased significantly with the number of associated foundresses, but the productivity per capita did not. No single foundress colony reached the sexual phase, while eight (21.6%) multiple foundress colonies did. Males were produced in only five colonies, so that the sex ratio was biased in favour of females.
4. These results suggest that because of the strong ecological constraints on solitary nesting, survival and high colony productivity are two advantages of multiple foundress colonies in B. j. juncea .
5. The decreasing per capita productivity concomitant with an increasing number of females noted in this study illustrates once again Michener's paradox. The coefficient of variance of the per capita productivity significantly decreased with group size, as Wenzel and Pickering suggested in the model they created to explain the paradox.
6. Ecological factors may act in conjunction with other factors, such as genetic relatedness between associated foundresses, to promote joining behaviour in B. j. juncea .  相似文献

This study deals with dispersal behavior of sexuals and intraspecificvariation in queen numbers. The specific questions are: (1)Is there an association between male and female dispersal behaviorand the number of queens in a colony? (2) Is there an associationbetween individual behavior and physiological condition? (3)Do males and females from monogyne (one queen per colony) andpolygyne (several functional queens per colony) colonies differwith respect to size, weight, and physiological condition? Theresults show that both males and females are more prone to dispersein monogyne than in polygyne colonies. Moreover, males and femalesof both monogyne and polygyne colonies show dispersal polymorphism,suggesting that an increased tendency of reproductive femalesto stay in the maternal colony may cause monogyne colonies toswitch to polygyny. The propensity to disperse is associatedwith the physiological condition of individuals. Larger andheavier females containing more fat and glycogen preferentiallydisperse, whereas smaller ones with less fat and glycogen moreeasily dealate and mate without a previous nuptial flight. Maledispersal correlates positively to larger size and higher levelsof glycogen; fat contents do not increase during maturation.The females produced in monogyne colonies are larger, heavier,and contain more fat and glycogen than those produced in polygynecolonies. The males produced in monogyne colonies have relativelylonger wings and are heavier than those produced in polygynecolonies. Spermatogonial transplantation provides a straightforward approach to quantify spermatogonial stem cells (SSCs). Because donor-derived spermatogenesis is regenerated in the form of distinct colonies, the number of functional SSCs can be obtained by simply counting the number of colonies established in recipient testes. However, this approach is legitimate only when one colony arises from one stem cell (one colony-one stem cell hypothesis). In this study, we evaluated the validity of this hypothesis. Two populations of donor cells were obtained from the testes of two transgenic mouse lines and mixed at a 1:1 ratio. Following transplantation of the cell mixture, donor-derived colonies were visualized and individually excised, and genomic DNA was extracted from each colony. Based on unique marker genes of the two transgenic lines, the genotype of the cells contained in a colony was examined by polymerase chain reaction. A colony was determined to be clonal when only one transgene was detected. The results showed that 100% and 90% of colonies were clonal when <5 and 19 colonies were formed per recipient testis, respectively. However, the clonality of colonies decreased as the colony number per recipient testis or the length of each colony increased. These results support the one colony-one stem cell hypothesis and demonstrate that spermatogonial transplantation provides a highly quantitative assay for SSCs; however, these conclusions are applicable under a defined transplantation condition.  相似文献

The present study examines (1) the cost of reproduction on colony growth, and (2) relationships among sexual maturity, whole-colony mortality rate and colony growth rate inGoniastrea aspera free from external influences by macrobenthos. Survival of colonies in permanent plots was followed for two years. Egg production by polyps in colonies collected just before the first spawning of a year was estimated by dissecting the polyps. Growth of the colonies (increase in number of polyps) was followed over one annual reproductive cycle. The cost of egg production on colony growth was apparent through colony ontogeny: (1) immature colonies had a greater annual growth rate than mature colonies, but produced almost no eggs; (2) in mature colonies, growth rate was negatively correlated with NE/PV (number of eggs per polyp volume mm-3). Annual whole-colony mortality was high in colonies with fewer than11 polyps in initial colony size, while mortality was extremely low once a colony grew beyond this size. This critical size for low whole-colony mortality was much smaller than the colony size (40 polyps) which would attain maturity one year later. Age at maturity was estimated as six years. While survival to maturity may be a selective force for the evolution of delayed maturation, the present data suggest that high colony fecundity, achieved after a long growth period as an immature colony, and an abrupt decrease of colony growth rate after maturation are the crucial forces.  相似文献

The production and quality of rhizobial inoculants in many developing countries is limited by the availability of suitable carriers or technological limitations. Experiments were conducted to evaluate the potential of various inexpensive and widely available carrier materials. The carriers, evaluated, were: perlite with pH adjusted with calcium carbonate or charcoal, 1:4 mixtures of perlite and malt residue, sugarcane bagasse, coal, and rice husk. We also contrasted sterilisation procedures (autoclaving or gamma irradiation) and incubation after injection (with or without initial two weeks incubation at 28 °C) for these various carriers. Survival of Bradyrhizobium japonicum strain CB1809 was monitored over a period of 6 months upon storage at 4 °C. Most carriers evaluated, were able to maintain rhizobial populations of more than 1 × 109 rhizobia per gram of inoculant over that time period, with mixtures of perlite with either sugarcane bagasse or malt residue supporting the largest rhizobial populations and a mixture of perlite and rice husk the lowest. All carriers supported rhizobial growth over the 6 months period. Initially, rhizobial populations were greater with gamma irradiation than autoclaving, however after 6 months, this response was significant only with the perlite and sugarcane bagasse mixture. The incubation of the inoculant after injection also ultimately did not benefit rhizobial levels for any of the carriers, tested. Using simple sterilisation procedures and without incubating after injection, perlite based carriers can produce high quality inexpensive inoculants, maintaining bacterial populations of more than 1 × 109/g rhizobia for at least 6 months.  相似文献

The membrane filter (MF) method for detection and enumeration of coliform bacteria in drinking water requires that the coliforms both grow and produce a green metallic sheen when the filter is incubated on modified Endo medium at 35 degrees C for 22 h. Large numbers of noncoliform bacteria, which are enumerated by the standard plate count (SPC) technique, can interfere with the detection of coliforms on MF. This paper presents quantitative evidence from laboratory experiments on the interference of specific SPC bacteria on coliform colony sheen production on MF. Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Aeromonas hydrophila caused significant reductions in Escherichia coli sheen colony counts when present at 3,000 and 220 per filter, respectively. The Flavobacterium sp. and Bacillus sp. selected for this study from SPC did not interfere with coliform colony sheen production. Excessive crowding of E. coli and Enterobacter cloacae colonies on MF also caused a reduction in the number of colonies that produced sheen. Even when there was no crowding (14 colonies per filter), only a fraction of the E. cloacae colonies produced sheen colonies on modified Endo medium.  相似文献

1. In social insects, the number of nests that a colony inhabits may have important consequences for colony genetic structure, the number of queens, sex allocation, foraging efficiency, and nestmate recognition. Within the ants, colonies may either occupy a single nest (monodomy) or may be organised into a complex network of nests and trails, a condition known as polydomy. 2. The current study is a large‐scale, long‐term, comprehensive field examination of various features of colony social and spatial structure in the facultatively polydomous black carpenter ant, Camponotus pennsylvanicus (DeGeer). The study examined the density, persistence, and the spatiotemporal distribution of colonies across a gradient of land disturbance associated with urban development. The temporal and spatial pattern of nest use was compared between fragmented landscapes where nesting sites were interspersed among human‐built structures (urban plots) and less disturbed landscapes with higher tree density (suburban plots). In addition, nesting site fidelity and changes in colony spatial structure were monitored over 7 years. 3. Long‐term monitoring and extensive sampling over a large spatial area allowed the first comprehensive insight into the spatiotemporal dynamics of colony and population structure in C. pennsylvanicus. A total of 1113 trees were inspected over 233 ha. Camponotus pennsylvanicus were active on 348 of the 1113 trees (31%) and these represented 182 distinct colonies. The colonisation rate remained relatively stable over 7 years suggesting that an equilibrium point had been reached. Relative to the suburban plots, tree density was 65% lower in the urban plots. The proportion of trees colonised by C. pennsylvanicus was significantly higher in the urban plots suggesting that intraspecific competition for nesting sites may be especially high in areas with lower tree density. Colony spatial structure also differed significantly between habitats and a higher incidence of monodomy was observed in the urban environment. The average number of trees per colony across all subplots was 1.95 (range 1–4) indicating that C. pennsylvanicus are weakly polydomous. 4. The composite picture that emerges for C. pennsylvanicus colonies in the urban habitat is a chain reaction of events: (i) the urban habitat has a lower tree density, (ii) lower tree density results in higher tree colonisation rate, (iii) higher tree colonisation rate results in simpler colony spatial structure (i.e. higher incidence of monodomy), and (iv) simpler colony spatial structure results in numerically smaller colonies. Long‐term monitoring of the spatiotemporal pattern of nest site use in selected colonies revealed a unique trend. While worker counts in selected colonies remained relatively stable throughout the course of the study, colony spatial structure changed considerably with 28% of colonies experiencing a change. Furthermore, the likelihood of detecting a change in colony spatial structure increased with the amount of time passing from the initial inspection. 5. In conclusion, tree density has a significant effect on a number of important colony features in C. pennsylvanicus. Besides tree density, other environmental features such as human‐built structures cause habitat fragmentation and may act as natural barriers to worker dispersal and/or foraging. Such barriers may ultimately affect the social and/or spatial structure at both the colony and the population level.  相似文献
