Abundant marine snow containing diatoms and detritus, but dominatedby large, bioluminescent thecate dinoflagellates and their temporaryvegetative cysts, especially several species of the genus Gonyoulax, was observed at six stations in the Santa Barbara Channel, California,in 1989 and 1994. These aggregates were unusually cohesive andmucus rich, and contained 2–4 times more mass, particulateorganic carbon (POC), particulate organic nitrogen (PON) andchlorophyll a per unit aggregate volume than more common typesof marine snow formed from diatoms, fecal matter, larvaceanhouses or miscellaneous detritus. However, the relationshipbetween aggregate size and the concentration of TEP (transparentexopolymer particles which form the mucus matrix of most marinesnow) was similar to that of other types of aggregates, suggestingthat much of the copious gel-like material within dinoflagellateaggregates was not TEP. While this is the first report of abundantthecate dinoflagellates occurring within large, rapidly sinkingmarine aggregates, the data do not support the conclusion thatmass aggregation and subsequent sedimentation of blooms is partof the life history adaptations of thecate dinoflagellates,as it is for some diatoms. The high abundance of free-livingdinoflagellate cells and temporary cysts, and the similar proportionof dinoflagellates relative to other algal and chemical componentsin both aggregates and the surrounding seawater, indicate thatthe dinoflagellates were not differentially aggregating. Evenso, passive accumulation of dinoflagellates in marine snow throughaggregation processes may result in more rapid transport ofdinoflagellate-generated material to the deep ocean, alter thenature of sinking particulate matter following dinoflagellateblooms, and increase the nutritional value of marine snow asa food source for zooplankton and fish.  相似文献

Succession of bacterivorous protists on laboratory-made marine snow   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Colonization and succession over time by bacterivorous protistson laboratory-made marine snow were analysed in five assaysduring 1994. Marine snow was made hom natural seawater usingrolling tanks. In all experiments, the macroaggregates werestable in size and consistency after the fourth day, and thecolonization and succession processes were similar. Newly formedmacre aggregates became colonized by heterotrophic nanoflagellateson the fourth day, mmt of them kinete plastids (Bodo designisand Rhynchomonns nasuta) and bicosoecids (Pseudobodo tremulansand Bicosoeca sp.). Sarcodines and ciliates appeared 1 day later.Among the former, the most abundant genus was Vannella sp.,while scuticociliates (Uronema marinum) and hypotrichs (Euplotesvannus and Aspidisca steini) were the most abundant ciliates. Most of the species observed in the study were more common tobenthic habitats than to pelagic ones. The planktonic existenceof the genera Bodo, Rhynchomonas, Bicosoeca, Euplotes and Aspidiscadepends on the presence of surfaces because they are poor swimmersor immotile, and Pseudobodo and Vannella need attachment forfeeding. The only pelagic protist observed was Uronema, probablybecause its opportunistic behaviour leads it to exploit enrichedenvironments such as marine snow. Flagellate and ciliate abundancesin laboratory-made macroaggregates were much higher than insurrounding water, which indicates that marine snow representsan enhanced habitat for protist growth.  相似文献

Discrete-depth, hourly mesozooplankton samples were collectedover a 92 h period in May 1992 at an anchor station within theSeine Region of Freshwater Influence (ROFI) (English Channel). The mesozooplankton community defined as a euryhaline marineassemblage was dominated by the calanoid copepods Acartia spp.,Temora longicornis and Centropages hamatus, the cladoceran Evadnenordmanni and the appendicularian Oikopleura dioica. The semi-diurnaltidal current was the dominant factor in determining the short-termtemporal changes in the community in terms of density and speciescomposition so that zooplankton patches displayed oscillatingmotion in relation to tidal advection. Although a few species(e.g. Pleurobrachia pileus) exhibited higher densities aroundlow tide, maximum densities were observed for most species (e.g.T.longicornis and E.nordmanni) around high tide, according tosalinity variations. Diurnal changes were only reported forcyclopoid copepods (i.e. Halicyclops sp. and Cyclopina sp.)which wer$$$ mainly endobenthic during the day and moved intothe water column at night. Besides temporal changes in depth-averageddensities, most species exhibited vertical migrations at dieland/or tidal periods. Tidal vertical migrations were reportedonly for a few taxa and could be the result of passive mechanisms(e.g. vertical mixing) rather than of active behaviour. Dielvertical migrations were observed in most of the abundant taxa. While this migration pattern did not appear to be an adaptationto predator avoidance within the Seine ROFI, it could regulatehorizontal transport of organisms and promote their retention. The consequences of the short-term mesozooplankton fluctuationsfor sampling designs are discussed.  相似文献

Hydrology and trophic relationships are frequently reported for inducing changes in mesozooplankton communities. This study investigated the distribution and abundance of mesozooplankton in the boundary waters between the East China Sea and the Taiwan Strait. Samples were collected using a NOR-PAC zooplankton net towed horizontally at a depth of 2 m, at eight stations along a transect, in March (spring) and October (autumn) 2005. The abundance of mesozooplankton was significantly higher during autumn than spring. Densities of many groups (e.g., Noctiluca scintillans, pteropods, copepods, mysids, euphausiids, and other larva) increased in October. During both seasons, copepods represented more than 50% of the total zooplankton abundance. Noctiluca scintillans, appendicularians, and Calanus sinicus were dominant in spring, indicating their association with the cold waters of the East China Coastal Current. Appendicularians and N. scintillans were mainly associated with the coastal waters of Taiwan; whereas C. sinicus was concentrated in the offshore waters along the coast of Mainland China. Chaetognaths, Temora turbinata, Acrocalanus spp., and radiolarians were dominant in autumn, showing their association with the warm waters of the Kuroshio Branch Current. Oncaea venusta was relatively abundant during both seasons. Our study shows that, in addition to the influence of seasonal changes in the water masses, the distribution and composition of mesozooplankton are highly influenced by trophic interactions between zooplankton taxa, in the boundary waters of the Taiwan Strait and the East China Sea.  相似文献

Effects of planktivorous fish (Sprattus sprartus), copepods(mainly Oithona sp.) and benthic filter feeders (Mytilus edulis)on the biomass and species composition of a natural marine planktoncommunity, dominated by dinoflagellates, was studied experimentallyin September 1988. Plastic 300 I cylinders were filled withSkagerrak surface water, filtered through a 90 µm nylonnet in order to remove mesozooplankton. Copepods were addedin three different concentrations (0, 1x and 6x the ambientdensity) with and without nutrient additions (nitrate, silicateand phosphate). In two nutrient-enriched cylinders with addedcopepods (1x and 6x), 5 cm sprats were also added (10 per cylinder). In two nutrient-enriched cylinders without added copepods. bluemussels (20 per cylinder. 3 cm length) were introduced. Chlorophylla. inorganic nutrients and densities of phytoplankton, ciliatesand copepods were measured throughout the experimental periodof 10 days. Gyrodinium aureolum increased in cell numbers inall but the mussel cylinders, while the other dominating dinoflagellate,Ceratium furca, decreased. This decrease was not due to grazing, but probably a container artefact. Diatoms, Rhizosolenia fragilissinia,Leptocylindrus danicus and Chaetoceros spp., increased slowlyin treatments without fish. In the fish treatments, diatomshad appreciably higher growth rates and cell numbers, probablydue to predation by fish on the copepods. Gyrodiniun aureolunalso had a somewhat higher growth rate in the presence of fish.although this was probably not due to reduction of copepod grazing. The results show that planktivorous fish can affect the biomassand species composition of natural phytoplankton communitiesin marine waters, but that the effect on the late summer-autumndinoflagellate dominated community is weak. Blue mussels areefficient grazers of the whole phytoplankton community and arenot particularly selective with respect to either size or species.  相似文献

Aggregation of algae, mainly diatoms, is an important process in marine systems leading to the settling of particulate organic carbon predominantly in the form of marine snow. Exudation products of phytoplankton form transparent exopolymer particles (TEP), which acts as the glue for particle aggregation. Heterotrophic bacteria interacting with phytoplankton may influence TEP formation and phytoplankton aggregation. This bacterial impact has not been explored in detail. We hypothesized that bacteria attaching to Thalassiosira weissflogii might interact in a yet-to-be determined manner, which could impact TEP formation and aggregate abundance. The role of individual T. weissflogii-attaching and free-living new bacterial isolates for TEP production and diatom aggregation was investigated in vitro. T. weissflogii did not aggregate in axenic culture, and striking differences in aggregation dynamics and TEP abundance were observed when diatom cultures were inoculated with either diatom-attaching or free-living bacteria. The data indicated that free-living bacteria might not influence aggregation whereas bacteria attaching to diatom cells may increase aggregate formation. Interestingly, photosynthetically inactivated T. weissflogii cells did not aggregate regardless of the presence of bacteria. Comparison of aggregate formation, TEP production, aggregate sinking velocity and solid hydrated density revealed remarkable differences. Both, photosynthetically active T. weissflogii and specific diatom-attaching bacteria were required for aggregation. It was concluded that interactions between heterotrophic bacteria and diatoms increased aggregate formation and particle sinking and thus may enhance the efficiency of the biological pump.  相似文献

The community structure of mesozooplankton was investigated in Dolgaya Bay (southern Barents Sea), a subarctic fjord, using a Juday net (0.168-mm mesh size) in July, 2008. A total of 39 species and higher taxa were found. Average abundance, biomass and diversity (±standard error) were 153,403 ± 15,855 ind m−2, 570 ± 61 mg dry mass m−2, and 2.25 ± 0.09, respectively. Copepods were the most numerous species. The mesozooplankton communities were dominated by omnivores (Oithona similis and Acartia spp.). Vertical distribution of the mesozooplankton was characterized by copepod dominance at each sampled layer. There were no significant correlations among physical variables and biological parameters, except negative correlation for the mean biomass and mean water temperature.  相似文献

Some investigators have proposed aspartate transcarbamylase(ATCase) activity as an overall index of mesozooplankton productivity. However, seasonal changes in mesozooplankton species compositionhave never been investigated as a possible source of variationin ATCase activity. In this study, we investigate mesozooplanktoncomposition in terms of (i) developmental stages, (ii) speciesand developmental stages body mass and (iii) species composition, and their relationship to ATCase activity. In controlled laboratoryconditions, ATCase activity variability was closely relatedto changes in somatic growth rate of the copepod Calanus helgolandicus, but was not related to changes in nucleic acid concentrations. It can be argued, however, that the activity of this enzymeis partially involved in copepod somatic productivity, and shouldbe a good index of embryogenesis. In addition, changes in ATCaseactivity were not significantly influenced by variability inmesozooplankton biomass, when investigated both on inter- andintraspecific levels. Finally, when a complete seasonal cyclewas investigated at a fixed station off Plymouth (English Channel),ATCase activity was not correlated with the abundance of anymesozooplankton species apart from copepodites and adult C.helgolandicus.Furthermore, ATCase activity measured both on mesozooplanktonand female C.helgolandicus was significantly correlated (R2= 0.72, n = 33, P < 0.001) throughout the year, apart fromApril. At that particular time of the year, ATCase activitywas in phase with the peak of abundance of copepod eggs andnauplii. It is suggested that mesozooplankton peaks of ATCaseactivity reflect two periods in the life history of the copepod:embryogenesis and terminal moult. We propose further experimentsto test this hypothesis and to promote the development of molecularbiomarkers in order to characterize specific zooplankton metabolicprocesses.  相似文献

Long-term dynamics of main mesozooplankton species in the central Baltic Sea   总被引:14,自引:0,他引:14
Long-term dynamics (1959–1997) of the copepod speciesPseudocalanus elongatus, Temora longicornis, Acartia spp. andCentropages hamatus, as well as the taxonomic group of cladocerans, are described for the open sea areas of the central Baltic Sea.Differences between areas, i.e. Bornholm Basin, Gdansk Deepand Gotland Basin, as well as between 5 year periods, were investigatedby means of Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). No significant differencesin mesozooplankton biomass between areas were found. On theother hand, clear time-trends could be demonstrated and relatedto salinity and temperature, with P.elongatus biomass mainlydependent on salinity and T.longicornis, Acartia spp. and cladoceransbiomasses dependent, to a large extent, on thermal conditions.Decreasing salinities since the early 1980s due to a lack ofmajor inflows of highly saline water from the North Sea andincreased river run-off, both triggered by meteorological conditions, obviously caused a decrease in biomass of P.elongatus. Contrarily, the standing stocks of the other abundant copepod species andcladocerans followed, to a large degree, the temperature developmentand showed, in general, an increase. The shift in species compositionduring this period is considered to be a reason for decreasinggrowth rates of Baltic herring (Clupea harengus) since the early1980s, and for sprat (Sprattus sprattus) since the early 1990s.Generally, it is suggested that low mesozooplankton biomassesin the 1990s were caused, at least partially, by amplified predationby clupeid fish stocks.  相似文献

Mesozooplankton biomass and abundance were evaluated in epipelagic waters at 59 stations covering the Italian sector of the Ligurian Sea (north-western Mediterranean) in December 1990. This region is characterised by a cyclonic circulation which encloses a central divergence zone and is associated with a main thermohaline front offshore the western Ligurian coast. At the end of autumn, mesozooplankton biomass (range: 0.80–4.24 mg DW m−3) and the abundance (range: 83.8–932 ind. m−3) were lower in the divergence zone. On the contrary, in the Ligurian frontal zone at the periphery of the divergence and on the eastern continental shelf the greatest values of biomass and abundance were recorded. Copepods and appendicularians dominated the mesozooplankton community, the main taxa being the copepods Clausocalanus spp. (46% of total zooplankton) and Oithona spp. (15%) and the appendicularian Fritillaria spp. (12%). Three hydrological sub-regions, i.e. the divergence, the eastern continental shelf and the periphery of the divergence, were characterised by different zooplankton communities and characteristic species. Environmental differences between the three zones were mainly related to changes in bottom topography, sea surface temperatures and quantity of particulate organic matter. Vertical mesozooplankton abundance and taxa distribution from the surface to 1,900 m depth were also examined in one station. The results showed that the bulk of the community was concentrated in the upper 200 m, small copepods being dominant particularly in the upper 50 m. The copepod community was more diversified in sub-superficial waters, with a maximum observed in the 200–400 m layer. The distributions of main zooplankton taxa described in epipelagic waters in the eastern Ligurian Sea in autumn were compared with their distribution at surface in the north-western Mediterranean obtained by sampling performed with the Continuous Plankton Recorder in 1997–1999. The analysis of the zooplankton community in CPR samples confirms the dominance of small copepods (Paracalanus spp., Clausocalanus spp., Oithona spp.) and appendicularians in the north-western Mediterranean in late autumn-winter and shows that their distribution is mainly related to the main mesoscale hydrographic features characterising this basin. Blooms of the red-tide ciliate Mesodinium rubrum occur everyyear in Southampton Water from late May to August, peaking inabundance in July. During blooms, M.rubrum concentrates in subsurfacelayers during the day and and also undergoes diurnal verticalmigration; this results in supersaturation in the near-surfacewater and significant deoxygenation at lower depths. Duringthe period of M.rubrum bloom, the mesozooplankton communityof Southampton Water is typically dominated by nauplius larvaeand calanoid copepods. The true nature of M.rubrum's impacton mesozooplankton and fish communities is equivocal, with contrastingreports of either bloom-associated avoidance or mortality byzooplankton or fish, or both, or alternatively grazing by micro-and mesoplankton on M.rubrum. A temporal sequence of zooplanktonhauls conducted between mid-May and early August indicated thatvertical profiles of mesozooplankton composition and abundancetypically exhibited lower near-surface densities, with numbersincreasing significantly below 3 m. During blooms, this patternoccurred both inside and outside patches, and therefore thereduced near-surface zooplankton numbers are considered to becaused primarily by turbulent mixing rather than by the associatedoxygen supersaturation induced by M.rubrum. Equally, no clearpattern of mesozooplankton density differences was observedat lower depths, associated with the low concentrations of oxygencaused by M.rubrum respiration. The results of the samplingprogramme undertaken show that M.rubrum does not significantlyexclude zooplankton from the vicinity of patches, nor is thereany associated substantial increase in zooplankton numbers. It is concluded that M.rubrum blooms have no immediate significantimpact on the broad structure of the mesozooplankton communitywithin Southampton Water.  相似文献

Aggregates of biogenic origin >0.5 mm, known as marine snow, represent a concentrated potential source of food for zooplankton.Little is known, however, about whether aggregates are commonlygrazed by zooplankton in the field. While previous laboratorystudies have shown that the euphausiid Euphausia pacifica, andthe copepod, Calanus pacificus, common crustacean zooplankters, consume marine snow if it is the only food source available,it is not known if euphausiids will select marine snow in thepresence of edible dispersed cells, as readily occurs in nature. To examine this question, we offered E. pacifica the diatom,Nitzschia angularis in aggregated and dispersed form as preysimultaneously. Aggregates and dispersed food contained identicalcell types so that differing prey quality, taste or motilitywould not be a factor. A new method was developed to track foodsources by labeling the frustules of aggregated cells with differentnaturally occurring, but rare, stable isotopes of silicon, 30Siand 29Si. Food selection was then estimated by measuring theisotopic composition of silica within fecal pellets producedby animals feeding on mixtures of the two labeled foods. Resultsindicate that E. pacifica consumed both aggregates and dispersedcells, even when more cells were made available in dispersedform than in aggregated form. This suggests that aggregatesmay indeed be a food source in the field, even when dispersedcells are relatively abundant. The method of labeling diatomcells with stable isotopes of silica may prove useful for futuregrazing experiments to distinguish identical cell types.  相似文献

Capelin larvae (Mallotus villosus) and mesozooplankton werecollected in May 2001 in the southern part of the Barents Sea.During the period of hatching and first feeding, capelin larvaeexperience high mortality rates. In order to understand theunderlying mechanisms influencing larval survival, we monitoreda selected site for 10 days using a variety of different samplingapproaches. Hydrological parameters conductivity–temperature–depth–fluorescence(CTDF) were recorded and zooplankton samples obtained simultaneouslyusing MOCNESS at three time periods. The mesozooplankton consistedessentially of copepods (85), dominated by Calanus finmarchicus. The zooplankton community consisted of different assemblagesderived from different areas (i.e. different water masses; Atlanticand coastal). Capelin larvae were found in surficial coastalwaters. Copepod nauplii and C. finmarchicus were less abundantin coastal waters where small copepodites (such as Acartia spp.and Temora longicornis) were found together with early stagesof coastal invertebrates that are possible prey for capelinlarvae. We suggest that capelin larvae base their foraging onsmall prey organisms frequently found among the coastal zooplanktonand that these larvae are less dependent on the propagationof the recruiting generation of C. finmarchicus present fromApril to June.  相似文献

Recent reports documenting very high viral abundances in seawater have led to increased interest in the role of viruses in aquatic environments and a resurgence of the hypothesis that viruses are significant agents of bacterial mortality. Synechococcus spp., small unicellular cyanobacteria that are important primary producers at the base of the marine food web, were used to assess this hypothesis. We isolated a diverse group of Synechococcus phages that at times reach titers of between 103 and 104 cyanophages per ml in both inshore and offshore waters. However, despite their diversity and abundance, we present evidence in support of the hypothesis that lytic phages have a negligible effect in regulating the densities of marine Synechococcus populations. Our results indicate that these bacterial communities are dominated by cells resistant to their co-occurring phages and that these viruses are maintained by scavenging on the relatively rare sensitive cells in these communities.  相似文献

Trophic interactions in a high arctic snow goose colony   总被引:2,自引:1,他引:1
We examined the role of trophic interactions in structuringa high arctic tundra community characterized by a large breedingcolony of greater snow geese (Chen caerulescens atlantica).According to the exploitation ecosystem hypothesis of Oksanenet al. (1981), food chains are controlled by top-down interactions. However, because the arctic primary productivity is low, herbivorepopulations are too small to support functional predator populationsand these communities should thus be dominated by the plant/herbivore trophic-level interaction. Since 1990, we have beenmonitoring annual abundance and productivity of geese, the impactof goose grazing, predator abundance (mostly arctic foxes, Alopexlagopus) and the abundance of lemmings, the other significantherbivore in this community, on Bylot Island, Nunavut, Canada.Goose grazing consistently removed a significant proportionof the standing crop (  相似文献

Microphytoplankton and zooplankton composition and distributionin the vicinity of the Prince Edward Islands and at the Sub-antarcticFront (SAF) were investigated in late austral summer (April/May)1996. Samples were collected for analysis of chlorophyll a concentration(Chi a), microphytoplankton and zooplankton abundance. Generally, the highest Chl a concentrations (up to 2.0 µg l–1)and zooplankton densities (up to 192 ind. m–3) were recordedat stations within the inter-island area while the lowest values(<0.4 µg l–1) were observed at stations upstreamof the islands. High Chl a and zooplankton biomass values werealso associated with the SAF. Microphytoplankton were dominatedby chain-forming species of the genera Chaetoceros (mainly C.neglectus),Fragilariopsis spp. and the large diatom Dactyliosolen antarcticus. The zooplankton assemblages were always dominated by mesozooplanktonwhich at times contributed up to 98% of total zooplankton abundanceand up to 95% of total biomass. Among mesozooplankton, copepods, mainly Clausocalanus brevipes and Metridia lucens numericallydominated. Among the macrozooplankton euphausiids, mainly Euphausiavallentini, E.longirostis and Stylocheiron maximum, and chaetognaths(Sagitta gazellae) accounted for the bulk of abundance and biomass.Cluster and ordination analysis did not identify any distinctbiogeographic regions among either the microphytoplankton orzooplankton.  相似文献

The cornerstones of sunken wood ecosystems are microorganisms involved in cellulose degradation. These can either be free-living microorganisms in the wood matrix or symbiotic bacteria associated with wood-boring bivalves such as emblematic species of Xylophaga, the most common deep-sea woodborer. Here we use experimentally submerged pine wood, placed in and outside the Mediterranean submarine Blanes Canyon, to compare the microbial communities on the wood, in fecal pellets of Xylophaga spp. and associated with the gills of these animals. Analyses based on tag pyrosequencing of the 16S rRNA bacterial gene showed that sunken wood contained three distinct microbial communities. Wood and pellet communities were different from each other suggesting that Xylophaga spp. create new microbial niches by excreting fecal pellets into their burrows. In turn, gills of Xylophaga spp. contain potential bacterial symbionts, as illustrated by the presence of sequences closely related to symbiotic bacteria found in other wood eating marine invertebrates. Finally, we found that sunken wood communities inside the canyon were different and more diverse than the ones outside the canyon. This finding extends to the microbial world the view that submarine canyons are sites of diverse marine life.  相似文献

The phytoplankton [chlorophyll a (Chl a)], microzooplankton, mesozooplankton and macrozooplankton biomass and distributionwere studied as part of a multidisciplinary project (Tempano)along the Antarctic Peninsula during December 2002. Even thoughthe summer phytoplankton bloom was not yet developed in thearea, autotrophs dominated the plankton biomass. Phytoplanktonvertical distribution was, in general, homogeneous in the upper40–50 m of the water column, further decreasing with depth.Protozoans showed low biomass; their contribution to the totalplankton being one order of magnitude lower than that of autotrophs. The vertical distribution of protozoans was variable among stationswith marked peaks at depths ranging from 30 to 80 m. Mesozooplankton-integratedbiomass was generally low, although there was a notable increasesouthward near the ice marginal zone. Macrozooplankton distributionwas more variable without any clear zonal distribution pattern. The vertical distribution of meso- and macrozooplankton (>4mm) biomass showed clear peaks of abundance comprising differentspecies depending on the geographical area. Our biomass distributiondata suggest a food-web scenario in which macrozooplankton arepreying on mesozooplankton populations only in the northernerstations, and mesozooplankton are, in their turn, shaping theabundance of the emerging populations of microzooplankton. Phytoplankton,on the other hand, seem to be hardly controlled by grazing activity.  相似文献

Experiments were designed to investigate whether processes relatedto zooplankton feeding have a positive effect on bacterial growth.Bacterial abundance and [3H]thymidine incorporation rates werefollowed in grazer-free batch cultures originally containingeither Scenedesmus quadricauda or Rhodomonas lacustris as foodsources, and Daphnia cucullata or Eudiaptomus graciloides asgrazers. Compared with controls lacking either animals or algae,a significantly higher bacterial abundance and productivityoccurred in cultures which contained both phyto- and zoo-plankton.The same experimental methodology was tested during the declineof a diatom spring bloom in a eutrophic, temperate lake. A significantincrease in bacterial biomass was observed due to the grazingactivity of in situ mesozooplankters during the clear-waterphase. Our results demonstrated that the dissolved carbon pathwayfrom mesozooplankton to bacteria averaged 57% (26–78%)of the algal carbon filtered from suspension.  相似文献

The biomass and diversity of the mesozooplankton and fish larvaecommunity were investigated across a frontal zone in the centralNorth Sea in the early summer, to investigate whether larvalfish predation is a regulator of mesozooplankton production.Pronounced changes in the mesozooplankton community were observedacross the front off the Jutlandic coast. The biomass and thediversity of copepods changed across the front as the populationof Calanus finmarchicus became abundant in the deeper water. The crustaceans (Acartia spp. and Evadne spp.) and polychaetelarvae dominated the mesozooplankton in the coastal water. Thebiomass of fish larvae was dominated by gadoid larvae. As inthe copepods, a shift in fish diversity was observed in thefrontal zone. On the coastal side of the front, whiting (Merlangiusmerlangus) dominated the biomass, while offshore from the frontwhiting were absent and cod (Gadus morhua) was the dominantlarval fish species on the deeper stations. The present investigationdemonstrates two different trophic pathways related to hydrographyin the central North Sea. First, in the shallow coastal water, the abundant small neritic copepods are predominately predatedby whiting, while in the offshore region the larger oceaniccopepods are predated by cod larvae. However, the predationpressure by the fish larvae was in general low (<10%) relativeto copepod production per day. Consequently, in the early summer, the copepod production potentially results in a build-up ofcopepod biomass on both sides of the front.  相似文献
