The effects of jasmonic acid (JA) applied in the medium and its methylester (MeJA) applied either in the medium or as a vapour, on shoot growth and microtuber formation were evaluated in three important food yam species (Dioscorea alata, D. cayenensis, and D. rotundata). Single nodes with leaves, derived from in vitro-multiplied material, were used as explants. When delivered at higher concentrations (10 or 50 μm) both JA and MeJA suppressed node formation. Microtuberisation was supported in all three species by adding either JA or MeJA to the medium. Significant promotory effects were observed only when photoperiod, salt compositions and sucrose concentrations known to favour microtuberisation processes in yams were used. MeJA applied as a vapour strongly inhibited microtuber differentiation in D. alata on all media tested but in D. rotundata and D. cayenensis yams MeJA, also applied in the vapour phase, exhibited slight promotory effects on microtuberisation. Expression of crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) is characterized by extreme variability within and between taxa and its sensitivity to environmental variation. In this study, we determined seasonal fluctuations in CAM photosynthesis with measurements of nocturnal tissue acidification and carbon isotopic composition (δ13C) of bulk tissue and extracted sugars in three plant communities along a precipitation gradient (500, 700, and 1,000 mm year−1) on the Yucatan Peninsula. We also related the degree of CAM to light habitat and relative abundance of species in the three sites. For all species, the greatest tissue acid accumulation occurred during the rainy season. In the 500 mm site, tissue acidification was greater for the species growing at 30% of daily total photon flux density (PFD) than species growing at 80% PFD. Whereas in the two wetter sites, the species growing at 80% total PFD had greater tissue acidification. All species had values of bulk tissue δ13C less negative than −20‰, indicating strong CAM activity. The bulk tissue δ13C values in plants from the 500 mm site were 2‰ less negative than in plants from the wetter sites, and the only species growing in the three communities, Acanthocereus tetragonus (Cactaceae), showed a significant negative relationship between both bulk tissue and sugar δ13C values and annual rainfall, consistent with greater CO2 assimilation through the CAM pathway with decreasing water availability. Overall, variation in the use of CAM photosynthesis was related to water and light availability and CAM appeared to be more ecologically important in the tropical dry forests than in the coastal dune.  相似文献

The influence of salinity on the growth, gross chemical composition and fatty acid composition of three species of marine microalgae,Isochrysis sp.,Nannochloropsis oculata andNitzschia (frustulum), was investigated. There was no significant change in growth rate ofIsochrysis sp. andN. (frustulum) over the experimental range of salinity (10–35 ppt), whileN. oculata had a significantly slower growth rate only at 35 ppt. The ash content of all three species increased with increasing salinity. Two species,Isochrysis sp. andN. oculata, showed significant linear increases in total lipid content with increasing salinity over the range 10 to 35 ppt.N. (frustulum) showed significant linear decrease in total lipids, with the highest percentage at low salinity within the range 10–15 ppt. Variation in salinity had only a slight effect on the total protein, the soluble carbohydrate and chlorophylla content of all species. All species responded to change in salinity by modifying their cellular fatty acid compositions. Significant positive correlations were observed between increase in salinity and increase in the percentage ofcis-9-hexadecenoic acid [16:1 (n-7)] over the entire experimental range inN. (frustulum) and between 25–35 ppt inN. oculata. There were curved relationships between salinity and percentage of hexadecanoic acid [16:0] inN. oculata andN. (frustulum), with maxima within the range 25–30 ppt for both species. A curved relationship was found between salinity and percentage of eicosapentaenoic acid [20–5(n-3)], forN. (frustulum), with lowest percentages of the fatty acid within the range 25–30 ppt. There was no consistent pattern in the percentages of other major fatty acids as functions of salinity. The Northern Territory isolateN. (frustulum) was unusual in having a substantial increase in total fatty acids with decreasing salinity (85 mg g–1 dry wt at 10 ppt compared with 33 mg g–1 at 35 ppt). The optimum salinities for the production of maximum amount of lipids and the essential fatty acids 20:5(n-3) and/or 22:6(n-3) were as follows:25 ppt forIsochrysis sp. Fifteen flavonoids were isolated from flowers and leaves of four species ofWeigela [W. florida (Bunge) A. DC.,W. praecox (Lemoine) Bailey,W. hortensis (Sieb. et Zucc.) K. Koch, andW. subsessilis (Nakai) Bailey] of Korea and one species (W. coraeensis Thunb.) of Japan. The flavonoid data indicated the presence of two distinct chemical groups: the “yellow flower” type producing flavonols and the “red flower” type producing flavonols and flavones. Two cyanidin 3-O-glycosides (glucoside and glucose-xylose) also occurred in all examined taxa. In the floral color-changing species,W. subsessilis, only quercetin glycosides predominated in floral tissue at first, decreasing in number and quantity with time. Instead, cyanidin 3-O-glycosides became present predominantly in flower color changing tissue from yellow to mauve.Weigela florida produced apigenin and luteolin glycosides, along with cyanidin 3-O-glycosides, which were also found inW. subsessilis. Within a relatively limited number of individuals (five),W. hortensis was unique in its production of all flavonols, flavones, and anthocyanins, although two individuals lacked flavone compounds but possessed all flavonols and anthocyanins. In effect, the putative hybrid,W. hortensis of Korea showed additive profiles of the parental marker compounds ofW. subsessilis andW. florida. Pollinator (andrenid bees) non-discrimination betweenWeigela flower-color morphs leading to non-assortive mating was a common, which indicated no breeding barrier among species. This flavonoid study indicated that species of both sections,Weigela andCalysphyrum appeared in each chemical grouping and it was obvious that the arrangement based on flavonoids cut across the sectional treatment of Hara. Floral tissues may be directly involved in the evolutionary strategy of pollination mechanisms and hence, their inherent flavonoids may no longer support taxonomic relationships. The presence of flavone glycosides inWeigela would support that tribe Dievilleae have a closer affinity to tribe Lonicereae within the Family Caprifoliaceae.  相似文献

The leafless spurgeEuphorbia aphylla (Euphorbiaceae), an endemic species restricted to several of the Canary Islands where it inhabits coastal and arid localities, expresses Crassulacean Acid Metabolism (CAM) when it is subjected to summer drought. A flexible CAM is consistent with the general ecology of the species. It is the only member of sect.Tirucalli native to the Canary Islands and is at the north-western edge of the section's biogeographical range. The other members of the section have a paleotropic distribution and are found throughout Africa. Many of them are regarded as obligate CAM plants, includingE. tirucalli which was used as a comparison in ecophysiological experiments examining the response ofE. aphylla to drought and temperature.  相似文献

The freeze-dried (extracted and non-extracted) biomass of 15 microalgal species grown in axenic mass culture and belonging to the Cyanobacteria, Chloro-, Eustigmato-, Phaeo-, Rhodo- and Tribophyceae were investigated for their ability to adsorb cadmium (Cd) ions from aqueous solutions. For comparison, other standard adsorbing materials (activated carbon, silica gel, siliceous earth) were included in the studies. The biomass of 11 microalgae exhibited a higher Cd adsorption than the standard materials. Extraction of the algal biomass increased the Cd adsorption capability of some, but not all microalgae. High Cd adsorption was found inAnabaena lutea, Nodularia harveyana, andNostoc commune (Cyanobacteria),Chlamydomonas sp. (Chlorophyceae),Bumilleriopsis filiformis (Tribophyceae), and inEctocarpus siliculosus, Halopteris scoparia andSpermatochnus paradoxus (Phaeophyceae). The specific surface (m2 cm–3) of the various microalgae was determined by means of laser diffractometry.Anabaena inaequalis andA. lutea (Cyanobacteria) and the Phaeophyceae had especially high Cd adsorption per surface unit. Three pioneer tree species —Salix humboldtiana, Cecropia latiloba, Senna reticulata — form monospecific stands in the Central Amazonian white-water flood plain. In contrast toterra firma forests where species composition is unpredictable even for pioneer species, in Central Amazonianvárzea the occurrence of the main colonizing species seems to be predictable. This predictability is linked to characteristic habitat conditions and the low number of pioneer species. This preference for different habitats is reflected by different germination and early growth, by the structural and physiological characteristics, as well as by the reproductive and morphological adaptations of the three main species. The germination rate was above 90% in all species, and the duration until germination ranged between one day inSalix and 14 days inCecropia. Stem elongation was more than 10 cm per month inSalix andCecropia, and about 50 cm per month inSenna. Wood specific gravity ranged from 0.33 g cm−3 inCecropia to 0.45 g cm−3 inSenna. The annual wood increment increased by 1.20 (Cecropia), 1.23 (Salix) to 2.14 cm per year (Senna). All species produced adventitious roots, lenticels and/or stem hypertrophy. Leaf photosynthesis was between 17 and 20 μmol m−2s−1, and reached a maximum of 30 μmol m−2s−1 inSenna. Flowering and fruiting inSalix occurred throughout the year, whereas inCecropia andSenna they were concentrated in the flooded period.Salix humboldtiana occurs mainly at low sites subjected to long periods of inundation and high sedimentation rates. OnceSalix has formed dense forest stands, sedimentation and water currents are reduced at these sites andCecropia latiloba may take over. This species grows on low to middle elevations in the flooding gradient at sites with lower current and sedimentation rates.Senna reticulata does not tolerate submergence and colonizes habitats that may have strong currents and high sedimentation on higher levels in the flooding gradient.  相似文献

Social organization and reproductive behavior were studied in 4 species of ostraciid fishes.Lactoria fornasini andLactoria diaphana from Japan andAcanthostracion polygonius from the western Atlsnyiv were usually found in single male, haremic social groups, although the latter 2 species usually included only 2 females per harem, and individuals in all 3 species foraged solitarily. Elements of both “resource defense” and “female defense” (Emlen & Oring 1977) were evident in the 2Lactoria species, and female defense appeared particularly intense inL. diaphana. Resource defense was apparent inA. polygonius. Lactophrys triquetor occurred in lek-like breeding assemblages at Curacao (Netherlands Antilles) and on the Atlantic coast of Panama. These variations in social organization are discussed and a relationship with feeding habits is suggested. All 4 species appear to be gonochores (demonstrated inLactoria by Moyer 1979). The 2Lactoria spp. showed operational sex ratios (OSR: Emlen & Oring 1977) approaching 1∶1 and a high degree of female spawning synchrony. The occurrence of polygyny in species with 1∶1 OSRs and female spawning synchrony is discussed with reference to the Knowlton (1979) model which predicts monogamy to occur in such situations.  相似文献

Summary Diurnal changes in chlorophylla fluorescence were determined in four species, differing in life form, in Portugal during the summer of 1989. These includedOpuntia ficus-indica, a CAM plant, andHelianthus annuus, Ficus carica andArbutus unedo, three C3 species. Steady state fluorescence yield,F S, and maximum fluorescence yield,F M′, were determined at different times of the day. Using the model of Genty et al. (1989), the photon use efficiency of photosystem II electron transport,φ e, was calculated from (F M′−F S)/F M′. Diurnal changes in relative rate of non-cyclic electron transport through photosystem II,J e, were derived by multiplyingφ e by the incident photon flux density (PFD). WhenJ e, determined for each species for various points in time throughout the day, was plotted against corresponding values of PFD, the light response curves obtained showed thatJ e was linearly dependent on PFD in low light and approached saturation in high light. The highest values ofJ e were observed inHelianthus annuus, followed byOpuntia ficus-indica, Ficus carica andArbutus unedo. The proportion of the xanthophyll zeaxanthin to total carotenoids, determined around noon, was inversely related to maximum rates ofJ e.  相似文献

Effects of starvation and glucose preincubation on membrane potential, ATPase-mediated acidification and glutamic acid transport were studied in yeast speciesSaccharomyces cerevisiae, Schizosaccharomyces pombe, Dipodascus magnusii, Lodderomyces elongisporus andRhodotorula gracilis. Themembrane potential was highest after preincubation with glucose in all species butL. elongisporus andR. gracilis. In all cases the membranes were depolarized in the presence of 20 mmol/L KCl and hyperpolarized with 50 μmol/L diethylstilbestrol (DES). Theextracellular acidification caused by addition of glucose was highest after preincubation with glucose in all cases except inR. gracilis where there was none. In all cases except inR. gracilis addition of KCl caused a marked increase in the acidification rate. Addition of DES with glucose caused a large decrease in rate inS. cerevisiae but had much less effect on the other species.Transport of glutamic acid was clearly increased after pretreatment with glucose inS. cerevisiae, S. pombe andD. magnusii (mainly due to enhanced synthesis of the carrier) but actually decreased inR. gracilis andL. elongisporus. Addition of DES had an inhibitory effect in all species but much more pronounced inS. cerevisiae andS. pombe than in others. In general, both the acidification and the transport of glutamate were enhanced after preincubation with glucose but much more so in the semianaerobic species, such asS. cerevisiae, than in the strict aerobes (R. gracilis) where the effect was occasionally negative. There was no relationship between the ATPase-mediated acidification and the membrane potential.  相似文献

Mangrove species more tolerant to salinity may function with less efficient water transport, which may be related to more conservative water use. To test the hypothesis, we investigate the gas exchange and hydraulic properties of three mangrove species: Rhizophora mangle L., Laguncularia racemosa Gaert and Avicennia germinans (L.)L. Experiments were performed with adult plants growing naturally in the field under a salinity of 35‰. Gas exchange parameters showed that A. germinans had significantly higher photosynthetic rates, and lower stomatal conductance and transpiration rates, compared to the other two mangroves. In concert with this, instantaneous water use efficiency was significantly high in A. germinans, intermediate in L. racemosa and lowest in R. mangle. The hydraulic parameters of the three mangrove species were in the lowest end of the range reported for tropical trees. However, the three mangrove species exhibited measurable differences in hydraulic parameters related to the control of water requirements for maintenance of carbon gain. L. racemosa and A. germinans showed less efficient water transport at shoot level but were the more efficient species in water use at the leaf level in comparison to R. mangle. The results of the effects of plant growth regulators, kinetin, gibberellic acid, 3-indoleacetic acid and ethrel (2-chloroethylphosphonic acid) on three wood-rotting polypores,viz. Polyporus palustris, Daedalea flavida andTrarnetes badia, are given. 3-Indoleacetic acid, kinetin and gibberellic acid increased the dry mass and protein, and decreased free amino acids, while ethrel decreased dry mass and protein, and increased free amino acids inP. palustris. All the treatments decreased dry mass and protein, and increased free amino acids inD. flavida. Kinetin decreased dry mass and protein, and increased free amino acids whereas 3-indoleacetic acid, gibberellic acid and ethrel increased dry mass and protein, and decreased free amino acids inT. badia over the control. The effects were most pronounced in the three species upon treatment with 50 μm kinetin, 50 μm gibberellic acid, 50 μm 3-indoleacetic acid and 25 μm ethrel. Among the treatments, the effects of 3-indoleacetic acid were most marked in enhancing growth, measured by dry mass ofT. badia out of the three species studied.  相似文献

The monkeys on the island of Sulawesi (Celebes), Indonesia, comprise seven species ofMacaca, that isM. maura, M. tonkeana, M. hecki, M. nigrescens, M. nigra, M. ochreata, andM. brunnescens. Hemoglobins from 248 individuals of these seven species were analyzed by isoelectric focusing electrophoresis (IEFE) and by starch gel electrophoresis in the presence of urea (USGE). Eighteen phenotypes consisting of eight molecular types were identified by IEFE analysis. The speciestonkeana inhabiting the central part of the island revealed 11 phenotypes, while peripheral species such asnigrescens andbrunnescens carried only 3 and 2 phenotypes, respectively. On USGE, three α chains and three β chains were identified and named α1, α2, and α6, and β1, β3, and β5, respectively. The α1 chain has the same mobility as the α chains of other macaques, while the α2 chain is less positively charged than α1, and α6 is the least positive among these α chains. The α2 chain is widely distributed in the Sulawesi macaques as the major component. Four species,ochreata, tonkeana, maura, andnigrescens, carried the α1 and α6 chains as minor components. The electrophoretic mobility of β1 was the same as that of other macaques, while β3 and β5 were more positively charged and less positively charged than β1, respectively. All of the Sulawesi species had β3 in high or low gene frequencies and inmaura, tonkeana, andbrunnescens, this type was most abundant. β5 chain existed in the species of the northern peninsula, as the major type. The subordinate type was β3 innigra andnigrescens and β1 inhecki. On the other hand, β1 was most frequently observed inochreata.  相似文献

The inhibitory effects of aflatoxin B1 were found to be related to the gram character in procaryotes, used in this study. Ethylene diamine tetra chloroacetic acid (0.05% w/v) or Tween-80 (0.05 % v/v) addition accentuated the aflatoxin B1 growth inhibition inSalmonella typhi andEscherichia coli at different pH values. The inhibition of lipase production was only 5–20 % inPseudomonas fluorescence ca. 25–48% inStaphylococcus aureus andBacillus cereus at different aflatoxin B1 concentrations (4–16μg/ml).However, inhibition of α-amylase induction was complete in1Bacillus megaterium whereas the inhibition was partial inPseudomonas fluorescence (27–40%) at 32μg aflatoxin B1 concentration. Summary Differences in the activity and structure of the vacuolar H+-ATPase (V-ATPase, EC 3.6.1.3) were investigated in the C3/CAM intermediate plantKalanchoë blossfeldiana Poellnitz cv. Tom Thumb, with lower or higher expression of CAM, andHordeum vulgare cv. Carina, grown with or without 150 mM NaCl. InK. blossfeldiana ATP-hydrolysis and H+-transport activity were higher with higher expression of CAM than in plants with very weak CAM. This was mainly due to a larger amount of V-ATPase. Statistical analysis of the diameter of intramembrane particles (IMPs) on freeze-fractures of tonoplast vesicles showed that IMPs were larger in tonoplast vesicle preparations ofK. blossfeldiana with strong CAM expression (9.1 nm) than in preparations ofK. blossfeldiana with low CAM expression (7.3 nm). As there is evidence that the majority of IMPs on freeze-fractures of tonoplast vesicles corresponds to the V0 domain of V-ATPase, the higher activity of V-ATPase inK. blossfeldiana with stronger CAM could be a result of additional structural changes in its membrane-integral domain. The higher activity of V-ATPase inK. blossfeldiana with stronger CAM is discussed in relation to the requirement for a higher proton pumping capacity for nocturnal malate accumulation in the vacuole. The ATP-dependent H+-pumping activity inH. vulgare was higher under salt stress than in control plants, while the rates of ATP-hydrolysis and the size of IMPs were not affected by the salt treatment. Thirteen species of Characeae were analyzed for their free amino acid contents. Large amounts of isoasparagine, accounting for 10 to 50% of the total free amino acids, were found in extracts fromChara (5 species including one unidentified),Nitellopsis (1 species), andLamprothamnium (1 species). In contrast, no isoasparagine was detected inNitella (5 species) andTolypella (1 species), except forN. flexilis in which as much as 40% of the free amino acids was isoasparagine. Peperomia has species that may be C3, show Crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM), or CAM-cycling. Species that show CAM progress from C3 to CAM through CAM-cycling during leaf development. In CAM and CAM-cycling species, CAM metabolism is predominately in the upper multiple epidermis and lower spongy mesophyll, whereas C3 metabolism is localized mostly in the palisade mesophyll. Using specific protein and cDNA probes prepared from P-enolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPc) and ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase (Rubisco), we have now studied the differential distribution of photosynthetic metabolism in Peperomia leaves using the technique of tissue printing. The tissue printing studies detected Rubisco protein in leaves of C3 P. orba, but not PEPc. Young C3 leaves of P. scandens and P. camptotricha showed Rubisco protein, but not PEPc; however, the mature leaves of these two species that have CAM showed PEPc protein and RNAs in both the multiple epidermis and spongy mesophyll. In contrast, Rubisco protein and RNAs were present throughout the leaf. The tissue printing data are consistent with our previously published data showing the differential distribution of photosynthetic metabolism in leaves of Peperomia. Although the tissue printing technique is qualitative, coupled with quantitative data it has proven useful for the study of function related to structure.  相似文献

Agouticarpa, a new genus of the informalAlibertia group (Rubiaceae), is described and illustrated. It comprises six species, and occurs from Costa Rica to Bolivia. Three species are here described as new:Agouticarpa grandistipula, A. hirsuta, andA. velutina. Additionally, three new combinations are made:A. curvifolia andA. williamsii (previously inGenipa) andA. isernii (previously inAlibertia). Agouticarpa is characterized by being dioecious, having elliptic to abovate, membranaceous stipules, male flowers in a branched dichasial or thyrse-like inflorescence, a poorly developed cup-shaped calyx, pollen grains with 3–7 apertures, and large globose fruits.  相似文献

In the terrestrial bromeliad, Puya floccosa, a value of carbon isotopic composition (δ13C) of −22‰ has been previously reported, suggesting the operation of weak and/or intermediate (C3-CAM) crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM). In order to characterize the operation of CAM in P. floccosa and its possible induction by drought, plants were grown in Caracas and subjected to four independent drought cycles. Additionally, since plants of this species grow in Venezuela in a large range of elevations, leaf samples were collected at elevations ranging from 725 to 2,100 m a.s.l. in the Venezuelan Andes and the Coastal Range, in order to evaluate the effect of elevation on CAM performance. Even though nocturnal acid accumulation occurred in both watered and droughted plants, mean ΔH+ was higher in droughted than watered plants [ΔH+ = 60.17.5 and 22.9 ± 5.2 μmol g−1(FM), respectively]. The majority of plants from all the natural populations sampled had low values of δ13C not differing significantly from those of C3 plants collected as standards and δ13C did not change with elevation. We conclude that P. floccosa is capable of a weak CAM activity, with a large variability among populations and drought experiments probably due to local and temporal differences in microclimatic variables and drought stress; elevation bears no influence on values of δ13C in this species.  相似文献

Based on collectors' measurements of 1,040 specimens, variation of relative tail length [RTL = (tail length/head and body length) × 100] has been studied inMacaca fascicularis andM. mulatta, two closely related species that replace one another in tropical Asia and subtropical Asia, respectively. RTL usually is greater than 90 inM. fascicularis and usually is less than 60 inM. mulatta; intermediate values occur in only 3.5% of specimens studied. Within each species, RTL is approximately equal in females and males. From infancy to adulthood, RTL tends to decline in both species. InM. fascicularis, RTL generally decreases with increasing latitude; inM. mulatta, RTL is approximately constant latitudinally. Where the geographic ranges of these two species meet at ca. 15°N in the Indochinese Peninsula, a few specimens have been collected in which RTL and dorsal pelage color are intermediate between those inM. fascicularis andM. mulatta. The observed pattern of variation suggests that the ranges ofM. fascicularis andM. mulatta formerly were separated by a zoogeographic barrier — perhaps during a Pleistocene glacial interval. After disappearance of the postulated barrier, the ranges of these two species apparently became contiguous and limited hybridization has occurred.  相似文献
