Summary. The study of the social interactions between host bumblebees and their inquiline species requires rearing them. Here we provide a simple method for rearing of cuckoo bumblebees (Bombus subgenus Psithyrus) in the laboratory. Two bumblebee cuckoo-host systems are used: Bombus (Psithyrus) vestalis hosted by B. (Bombus) terrestris and B. (Psithyrus) sylvestris hosted by B. (Pyrobombus) pratorum. First, the invasion of the Psithyrus female is performed in species-specific host colonies containing approximately 10 young workers. On average, a parasitized colony of B. terrestris produced 90 ± 9 young males and 21 ± 3 young females of B. vestalis, whereas a parasitized colony of B. pratorum produced 16 ± 2 young males and 5 ± 1 young females of B. sylvestris. One week after emergence, Psithyrus virgin females are placed in a flight cage exposed to natural light, with Psithyrus males of other colonies. After successful mating, the females are isolated and overwintered in a cold room at 4°C for 2–4 months. This method enables a year-round and mass breeding of Psithyrus species to facilitate studies of these rare species. 相似文献

Unexpected consequences of polyandry for parasitism and fitness in the bumblebee, Bombus terrestris 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Multiple mating by females (polyandry) is taxonomically widespread but the evolution of such behaviors is not clearly understood given potential costs of polyandry such as time, energy, or predation risk. The genetic variability versus parasites hypothesis predicts a reduction of parasitism due to increased genetic variability among offspring and an associated fitness gain. We tested this hypothesis with a field experiment in the bumblebee, Bombus terrestris L. Worker heterogeneity within the colony was experimentally altered by artificially inseminating queens with sperm from one male, four brothers, two males, or four unrelated males. We found genetic variability to be effective, because intensity and prevalence of the most common parasite, Crithidia bombi, a trypanosome, decreased with increasing levels of colony heterogeneity. Fitness differed between treatments but did not increase in a simple way, with increasing genetic heterogeneity among colony workers. Instead, fitness followed a U-shaped function with a minimum for small amounts of genetic heterogeneity. We therefore suggest that polyandry also induces a cost, perhaps as a result of the social structure within the colony. In evolutionary terms, singly mated females appear to be constrained by an adaptive valley that needs to be crossed before high degrees of mating frequency can be reached. This may help to explain why B. terrestris and most other social insects are often monandrous. 相似文献

Bumblebee colonies are founded by a single-mated queen. Due to this life history trait, bumblebees are more susceptible to parasites and diseases than polyandrous and/or polygynous social insects. A greater resistance towards parasites is shown when the genetic variability within a colony is increased. The parasite resistance may be divided into different levels regarding the step of the parasite infection (e.g. parasite uptake, parasite intake, parasite's establishment in the nest, parasite transmission). We investigate the prophylactic behaviour of bumblebees. Bumblebees were observed during their foraging flights on two artificial flowers; one of these was contaminated by Crithidia bombi, a naturally occurring gut parasite of bumblebees (in a control experiment the non-specific pathogen Escherichia coli was used). For C. bombi, bumblebees were preferentially observed feeding on the non-contaminated flower. Whereas for E. coli, the number of visits between flowers was the same, bumblebees spent more time feeding on the non-contaminated flower. These results demonstrate the ability of bumblebees to recognise the contamination of food sources. In addition, bumblebees have a stronger preference for the non-contaminated flower when C. bombi is present in the other flower than with E. coli which might be explained as an adaptive behaviour of bumblebees towards this specific gut parasite. It seems that the more specific the parasite is, the more it reduces the reward of the flower. 相似文献

Summary: Size polymorphism is an important life history trait in bumblebees with strong impact on individual behavior and colony organization. Within a colony larger workers tend to serve as foragers, while smaller workers fulfill in-hive tasks. It is often assumed that size-dependent division of labor relates to differences in task performance. In this study we examined size-dependent interindividual variability in foraging, i.e. whether foraging behavior and foraging capability of bumblebee workers are affected by their size. We observed two freely foraging Bombus terrestris colonies and measured i) trip number, ii) trip time, iii) proportion of nectar trips, and iv) nectar foraging rate of different sized foragers. In all observation periods large foragers exhibited a significantly higher foraging rate than small foragers. None of the other three foraging parameters was affected by worker size. Thus, large foragers contributed disproportionately more to the current nectar influx of their colony. We provide a detailed discussion of the possible proximate mechanisms underlying the differences in foraging rate. 相似文献

Insect chitin possessing shell-like structure was prepared from the bumblebee corpses by a consequent treatment with 1M HCl and 1M NaOH. The bumblebee chitin was compared with crustacean (shrimp) chitin by using elemental analysis, Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) and solid-state (13)C cross-polarization magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (CP/MAS)-NMR spectroscopy and confocal microscopy. Both chitins (bumblebee and shrimp) exhibited identical spectra, while the bumblebee chitin had a 5% lower degree of acetylation and was characterized by a fine membrane texture. 相似文献

Patterns of sex allocation in bumblebees have been enigmaticand difficult to interpret in either a Fisherian context orin a kin-selection perspective. We gathered data on severalhundred laboratory-reared colonies of the bumblebee Bombus terrestrisand analyzed sex allocation as a function of diapause durationand a series of variables describing colony development. Ouranalyses addressed both sex allocation patterns across differentcohorts of laboratory colonies reared at different times andsex allocation patterns across individual colonies within thesecohorts. We used path analysis to test a hypothetical modellinking a sequence of colony-development variables to the crucialreproductive parameters at the end of the colony life cycle.We show that (1) population-wide patterns of sex allocationshow equal investment in the sexes and are thus consistent withqueen control, but not with worker control. (2) A significantpart of the colony-level and cohort-specific variation in sexallocation is related to the hibernation conditions of foundingqueens: Queens with longer than average winter diapause producelarger cohorts of first and second brood workers, switch tohaploid eggs early, and produce colonies that raise mostly malesand few new queens and vice versa. (3) Colony-level sex allocationis significantly related to the time span between the switchpoint (date of first haploid egg laid by the queen) and thecompetition point (date of first haploid egg laid by one ofthe workers): the longer this period, the more male biased thesex ratio. (4) The breeding constraints of an annual life cycle,the short reproductive season, and the presumably high premiumon early produced males imply that bumblebee workers have norealistic options to capitalize on their relatedness asymmetrytoward the different kinds of reproductive brood by biasingthe sex ratio. 相似文献

Bumblebees are crucial buzz pollinators of poricidal plants and commercial crops. The population of these crucial pollinators is globally declining. The need to focus on factors contributing to bee health such as gut microbiota is imperative. We evaluated the effect of source on gut microbiota composition in adult worker Bombus terrestris from two environments using multiplexed 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing on the Illumina MiSeq platform. Indoor reared adult worker bees were segregated into non-pollination (NP) and pollination (P) groups. The NP group bumblebees were raised and kept in the insectary for the entire experiment. P group bumblebees worked in a tomato-planted greenhouse for 15 days as pollinators. Our results show that members of Proteobacteria and Firmicutes were significantly different between the two groups. Bifidobacterium bombi (Actinobacteriota) and Candidatus_Schmidhempelia (Proteobacteria) were found to be important gut colonizer exclusive to NP and P group bees, respectively. DESeq2 analysis showed differentially abundant OTUs belonging to Lactobacillus spp. in each group. But for the differentially abundant detected OTUs, resolution till genus level was obtained which impairs our knowledge of the species associated with each group. Our data show that the gut microbiota between the groups differed when indoor- reared adult worker bees were exposed to different environments. The distinct gut microbiota between the two groups may also have been influenced by the different diets fed to bees upon segregation. Further studies can give important insights into the role of gut microbiota on bee health when indoor reared bees are employed for pollination. 相似文献

ABSTRACT. The establishment of a dominance order within seventy eight groups of four callow workers was investigated. The dominant worker establishes its position by means of overt aggression. Aggression starts 20—40 h after confinement. Dominance order becomes established within 2 days of removal from the colony. Once established, the dominance order is maintained by dominant-subordinate interactions.
The dominant worker starts ovipositing at an age of about 6 days. Subordinates rarely lay eggs. In 25% of the groups the dominant worker is superseded by another worker before any oviposition occurs. Once the dominance order is established, the dominant worker inhibits endocrine activity in subordinates.
Differences in body size and in endocrine activity are thought to be responsible for the ranking of workers in the dominance hierarchy. Ranking seems to depend more on the activity of the corpora allata (CA) than on the activity of the ovaries. The bumblebee, Bombus terrestris, is an important pollinator commercially used on a global scale. The exported subspecies B. t. terrestris has colonised diverse environments, in some cases displacing wild pollinators to the verge of local extinction. In this sense, the native Iberian subspecies B. t. lusitanicus may be threatened by the subspecies B. t. terrestris, naturally distributed from the Pyrenees to Central Europe but also observed in southern Spain due to escapes from commercial nests. Mitochondrial genomes have a low recombination rate and a small effective population size owing to their maternal inheritance, thus providing an accurate approach to study hybridisation events between populations. Therefore, we present the sequences of the mitogenomes of both subspecies as a molecular framework to select suitable markers to detect possible introgression events between them. We used metagenomics to obtain approximately 17 kbp of the mitogenome from both subspecies. Their mitogenomes differed in 358 bp (excluding the AT-rich region). Four mitogenomic fragments were selected to be tested as subspecific diagnostic markers. A RFLP detected in the gene nad2 (NADH dehydrogenase subunit 2) has proven to be an efficient, quick and cost-effective tool to assess the dispersion of the non-endemic subspecies into Iberian native populations. Subspecific haplotypes were observed in both morphological subspecies, suggesting introgression events in the northern natural contact area and in the new human-mediated contact area in the south of the Iberian Peninsula. 相似文献

Carbon dioxide production by the Bombus terrestris queen was measured at different temperatures (10–30°C) and during different activities of the bumblebee. During flight the CO2 production averaged 50 ml g−1 (fresh weight) h−1 and was only slightly affected by temperature. During rest (with a readiness to fly) and incubation the respiration rate clearly increased with decreasing temperature (5–40 and 13–56 ml g−1 h−1 , respectively), whilst during torpor it increased with temperature (0.1–1.7 ml g−1 h−1 at temperatures from 10 to 30°C).
The expenditure of energy as calculated from the continuous respiration measurements agreed well with the amount of energy obtained from food (discrepancy 6–19%). The energy budget of an incubating queen was correctly predicted using the measured respiratory functions, prevailing temperatures, and the behaviour of the queen. The behaviour of bumblebee workers foraging on arrays of artificial flowers of two colour morphs was observed. Experiments were conducted on arrays of varying morph frequencies and at three different total flower densities. Bumblebees consistently showed a preference for the commonest colour morph, and this behaviour was not significantly affected by changing density. In contrast, frequency-independent preferences changed significantly with density. At low densities, there was a strong bias towards the more conspicuous colour, whereas at higher densities there was no overall colour bias. Flight distances between flowers decreased significantly at high density. Bumblebees also visited flowers of similar colours sequentially, but this behaviour was not density-dependent. It is suggested that as densities increase, there is an increased probability that bumblebees detect yellow flowers, which were probably less conspicuous compared with blue flowers, and that this might be caused by changes in flight speed with flight distance. Where there is a positive relationship between pollinator visitation and the relative fitness of a floral morph, the observed behaviour would induce positive frequency-dependent selection on a plant population with two corolla colour morphs on which the bumblebees were foraging, which would result in stabilizing selection for a single corolla colour, irrespective of density. There was no indication that rare colour morphs would be preferred at high density. The probability of different corolla colour morphs going to fixation would, however, be affected by density. 相似文献

Larvae of Bombus terrestris, a pollen-storing bumblebee, are dependent on progressive provisioning by workers. We test the hypothesis that larval cuticular
chemicals can act as a hunger signal. We first show with a new classical conditioning experiment, using a Y-shaped tube, that
workers can be trained to prefer the extracts of normally fed larvae over those of starved larvae. This proves the ability
of workers to discriminate between larval extracts. Second, we show in a bioassay that workers also use these perceived differences
to feed larvae according to their nutritional status. Larval broods sprayed with the extracts of the starved larvae were fed
significantly more than larval broods sprayed with the extracts of normally fed larvae or with the solvent (n-pentane) only.
We therefore conclude that B. terrestris larvae signal their need for food via their cuticular chemicals, and discuss the extent to which this form of communication
could give larvae some control over their development.

Post‐hibernated bumblebee (Bombus terrestris) queens were kept for 1 week under photoperiodic conditions of 8 h light : 16 h dark, and at four different temperatures (24, 28, 32 and 36°C). The reproductive performance of the queens was then observed. It was found that exposure temperature and hibernation duration did not affect the oviposition rate. The pre‐oviposition period was found to be shortest (3.8 ± 0.7 days) for queens that had hibernated for 4.0 months and had been activated at 28°C. Timing of the initiation of the switch‐point was not affected by exposure temperature and hibernation duration. Significantly higher numbers of workers (268.0 ± 31.4) and sexual queens (119.3 ± 16.8) were produced by the queens that had hibernated for 3.0 months and had been activated at 28 and 36°C, respectively. The queens that had hibernated for 4.0 months and had been activated at 36°C produced the highest number of males (296.2 ± 32.3). 相似文献

Abstract Native vegetation near Hobart in Tasmania was investigated to determine whether it was being invaded by the recently introduced large earth bumblebee, Bombus terrestris (Linnaeus, 1758). This species was found to be established in high numbers in a variety of vegetation types from coastal heath, through sclerophyll forest, and subalpine shrubberies up to an altitude of 1100 m. Hence, it has the potential to spread through much of Tasmania and temperate, mesic regions of mainland Australia. It is highly polylectic, foraging on at least 66 native plant species from 21 families. While the most heavily visited species produced abundant nectar, the lack of pre-dation on this species also allowed it to forage economically on small flowers in clusters. This foraging profile overlapped with those of all anthophilous insect families, all bee subgenera, and all species of nectarivorous birds which were encountered. Therefore, B. terrestris has the potential to compete with most native anthophiles and commercial honeybees. As it forages from some plant taxa which are not visited by the European honeybee, Apis mellifera Linnaeus, 1758, this species is impacting on plant-pollinator relationships which have previously been free from the effects of exotic bees. 相似文献

Social bees, like honeybees and bumblebees, have a close contact with nest mates of different developmental stages and generations. This could enhance bacterial transfer between nest mates and offers opportunities for direct transfer of symbionts from one generation to the next, resulting in a stable host specific gut microbiota. Gut symbionts of honeybees and bumblebees have been suggested to contribute in digestion and protection against parasites and pathogens. Here we studied the impact of contact with the bumblebee colony on the colonization potential of the bacterial families (i.e., Neisseriaceae, Orbaceae, Lactobacillaceae and Bifidobacteriaceae) occurring in the gut of adult bumblebees (Bombus terrestris). Bacterial profiles of the gut microbiota of B. terrestris were determined based on the hypervariable V4 region of the 16S rRNA using paired‐end Illumina sequencing. In our experiments, we created different groups in which we gradually reduced the contact with nest mates and hive material. We made 3 observations: (i) reducing the contact between the colony and the bumblebee during adult life resulted in a significant drop in the relative abundance of Lactobacillus bombicola and Lactobacillus bombi; (ii) Bifidobacteriaceae required contact with nest mates to colonize the gut of B. terrestris and a significant lower bacterial diversity was observed in bumblebees that were completely excluded from colony contact during the adult life; (iii) Snodgrassella and Gilliamella were able to colonize the gut of the adult bumblebee without any direct contact with nest mates in the adult life stage. Filtering properties of the membrane form an integral part of the mechanisms producing the light-induced electrical signal in insect photoreceptors. Insect photoreceptors vary in response speed between different species, but recently it has also been shown that different spectral photoreceptor classes within a species possess diverse response characteristics. However, it has not been quantified what roles phototransduction and membrane properties play in such diversity. Here, we use electrophysiological methods in combination with system analysis to study whether the membrane properties could create the variation of the response speed found in the bumblebee (Bombus terrestris) photoreceptors. We recorded intracellular responses from each photoreceptor class to white noise-modulated current stimuli and defined their input resistance and linear filtering properties. We found that green sensitive cells exhibit smaller input resistance and membrane impedance than other cell classes. Since green sensitive cells are the fastest photoreceptor class in the bumblebee retina, our results suggest that the membrane filtering properties are correlated with the speed of light responses across the spectral classes. In general, our results provide a compelling example of filtering at the sensory cell level where the biophysical properties of the membrane are matched to the performance requirements set by visual ecology. 相似文献

A greenhouse experiment was setup to study foraging behavior of the bumblebee Bombus terrestris L. on Cry3Bb-expressing genetically modified (GM) eggplants and their near-isogenic control. Commonly, more bumblebees visited GM eggplants compared to near-isogenic control, but this difference was only marginally significant. The mean length of feeding bouts was similar on the two treatments. Neither the number of flowers produced nor their size could explain bumblebees?? tendency to prefer GM eggplants. Volatile compounds were extracted from five plants per genotype and separated using gas chromatography. Thirteen compounds were identified and five of them appeared significantly more abundant in GM eggplants. Six of the identified compounds [(+)-limonene, Z-jasmone, p-cymene, ??-pinene, methyl-salicilate, and (?)-limonene] were tested in electrophysiological bioassays with antennas detached from young bumblebees, and a response was recorded in all six cases. Experimental results indicate that pollination activity of bumblebees is compatible with this GM eggplant event as a food source and that chemical cues may have an important role in plant identification. The implications for environmental risk assessment of GM plants are discussed. 相似文献

Abstract Observations of the large earth bumblebee, Bombus terrestris (L.), in native vegetation were collated to determine the extent to which this exotic species has invaded Tasmanian native vegetation during the first 9 years after its introduction. The range of B. terrestris now encompasses all of Tasmania's major vegetation types, altitudes from sea level to 1260m a.s.L, and the entire breadth of annual precipitation in the state from more than 3200 mm to less than 600 mm. Observations of workers carrying pollen, together with the presence of large numbers of bumblebees at many localities across this range indicate that colonies are frequently established in native vegetation. Evidence that colonies are often successful was obtained from repeated observations of the species during more than 1 year at particular sites. Unequivocal evidence of colonies was obtained from six National Parks, including four of the five in the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area (WHA). Indeed, the species has been present in the WHA for at least as long as it has in the city of Hobart, where it was first recorded. In southwestern Tasmania, evidence of colonies was obtained up to 40km from gardens, 61 km from small towns and 93 km from large towns. Hence, contrary to previous suggestions, the species is established in the most remote parts of Tasmania and is not dependent on introduced garden plants. Given their strong record of invasion, it is likely that B. terrestris will form feral populations on the mainland of Australia and in many other parts of the world if introduced. Because of their likely negative impacts on native animals and plants, and potential to enhance seed production in weeds, the spread of bumblebees should be avoided. 相似文献
